Bainbridge Island Almanac 2014

A golden community - Bainbridge Island Capt. George Vancouver had no idea what lay beyond the wooded coastline of Bainbridge Island as he explored Puget Sound in 1792. A half century later, however, Capt. Charles Wilkes discovered that the place we call home was actually an island unto itself, set apart from the pennisula to the west by Agate Passage. Wilkes proclaimed the isle Bainbridge Island, in honor of Commodore William Bainbridge, a hero of the War of 1812 who was in command of the USS Constitution during its victorious battle against the HMS Java, where Bainbridge was wounded twice but maintained command of his ship. His deeds would soon earn him the Congressional Gold Medal. Our Bainbridge, as well, has distinguished itself as worthy of the gold standard. We have excellent schools: U.S. News and World Report named Bainbridge Island High and Eagle Harbor High as two of the top high

schools in the country, and in 2012, three schools — Bainbridge High, Eagle Harbor High and Captain Johnston Blakely Elementary School — received the state’s highest honors as 2012 Washington Achievement Award winners. Our community has earned recognition for its quality of life: Last year, it was named as one of “The Best Towns in Washington for Raising Kids.” And Bainbridge has also been found to be a leading light in our increasingly online world, picking up a Google eCity award in 2013 the only city in Washington state to receive the honor. Islanders are certainly well aware of Bainbridge’s many virtues. Our island has been widely recognized as one of the best places to live in the Pacific Northwest — and the country. It’s a place with a world-class quality of life, rich and diverse history, abundant natural beauty, outstanding schools, and a deeply committed and caring community.

The Bainbridge Island Review, your hometown newspaper for 90 years, presents our 2014 Almanac — your guide for living on the island. Inside, you’ll find the information you need for daily life on Bainbridge; government offices and contacts, museums, arts and entertainment offerings, parks and recreation, clubs and organizations, school information and more. The Bainbridge Island Review has long been known as “The Only Newspaper In The World That Cares About Bainbridge Island,” and we thank those who in the community who have helped us create this comprehensive guide. Thank you for picking up this copy of the Almanac and for up-to-date information on Bainbridge Island every week of the year, call 842-6613 to subscribe to the Bainbridge Island Review, or visit www.bainbridgereview.com. Taking the scenic route

BY CECILIA GARZA

Bainbridge is a beautiful place. Anyone who lives here, will tell you. But those are just words. Let us take you on a scenic tour, so you can decide for yourself. Here is a list of the top 10 places on Bainbridge worth visiting. Some are great to enjoy a family picnic on a sunny day, others are perfect for a secluded walk along a pebble beach.

1

MANITOU BEACH DRIVE

On a sunny day, a bike ride or drive out to Manitou Beach Drive will put the first sparkle of Puget Sound into your tour. The road follows the northern side of Murden Cove and offers mostly unobstructed views of the Sound and the Seattle skyline in the distance. During low tide, visitors can follow a grassy decline to a rocky beach.

Cecilia Garza photo

At the bottom of Hidden Cove Road lies a hidden cove. Walk or bike to this beach as it is nestled in a densely forested neighborhood.

Cecilia Garza photo

Manitou Beach Drive offers one of the few scenic drives with unobstructed views of the Puget Sound and Seattle in the distance.

2

MANZANITA BAY

A tricky place to find amidst a densely forested portion of the island, but once there, worth it. Take Day Road going west, turn left on Manzanita Road and at the Dock Street road end, lies a small neighborhood shoreline access point. On a clear day, one feels encased by the Olympic Mountains. For some island youth, this is also the perfect summer swimming spot.

At the shallow end of the bay is a sandy sea bed. During lowtide, the sand flat is warmed up by the sun, making for a perfect heating system once the tide comes in. It may not be as warm as the Florida Keys, but it’s an exhilarating way to end your day.

3

HIDDEN COVE ROAD

At the end of Hidden Cove Road, lies exactly that: a hidden cove. Deeply nestled in a secluded neighborhood area, this beach is best as a walking or biking destination. Visitors can take a set of wooden steps down to a sand-cobble beach.

4

BLAKELY HARBOR PARK

In the 1880s, Port Blakely was home to one of the world’s largest sawmills until it burned down in 1907. It was later rebuilt in the 1920s, only to burn down again. The harbor was once the most industrial in Puget Sound. Today, it is a natural amusement park. Visitors can hop along a driftwood trail down to the former Blakely generator building which is home to an ever-evolving graffiti art collection. Just past the concrete artifact is a nearly 90-year-old watergate used in the sawmill era to hold water and logs at the head of the bay.

5

Point White Pier is a summer favorite for island youth. During high tide, the pier offers a great location for views, fishing or — for the bold — diving. Below, Lytle Beach is a south-island gem. The 40-foot-wide sandy-gravel beach offers a great getaway for picnickers and families.

8

POINT WHITE DRIVE AND PIER

Just north of Lytle, is probably the best biking spot on Bainbridge. Those interested in a scenic bike ride will be pleased by the sparkling Rich Passage views on Point White Drive. But if you’re looking

FAY BAINBRIDGE PARK

Another favorite for pet owners is Fay Bainbridge. The driftwood maze is a playground for curious pups. Along with 1,420 feet of waterfront, the park offers volleyball courts, camp sites, a play ground, and sheltered and unsheltered picnic tables. On a clear day, visitors can see the Cascade Mountains, Mt. Rainier and Mt. Baker. The beach is also a good spot to launch a kayak and venture into the water.

LYTLE BEACH

A south-island treasure, Lytle Road leads visitors to neighborhood beach wide and long enough to host a day-long getaway. This road-end was one of the first to be developed on Bainbridge and is now a popular spot for residents. On the 40-foot wide, sandy-gravel beach, visitors can enjoy views of the Olympic Mountains, Rich Passage and passing ferries. Those interested, need only pass through one of the quaintest and liveliest neighborhood streets to reach it. Just outside the beach is a community garden and miniature soccer field. Due to the amount of traffic this spot sees, however, park officials ask visitors to be especially considerate of the neighboring private properties.

6

Cecilia Garza photo

9

GAZZAM LAKE

to catch a sweat, seasoned cyclists should probably situate Point White for the end of their route. This three-mile stretch on the shoreline is mostly flat and takes visitors driving, walking or biking down to Point White Pier. During high tide, the pier is a good place for views, fishing or — for the bold — diving.

7

PRITCHARD PARK

Pritchard is located just on the southern side of Eagle Harbor. One of the only sandy beaches on Bainbridge and more vast than Lytle, Pritchard is the premiere spot for picnickers and pet owners. From the parking lot, visitors can follow the blackberry bushes down a trail to find a perfect spot on the sandy beach. From there they can watch sailboats pass to and from the island marina.

Burned out on beaches? Being predominately forested, Bainbridge also provides several opportunities for hiking. Gazzam Lake is Bainbridge’s second largest area of undeveloped land. It includes 444 acres of upland forests and wetlands with an extensive trail system. Nestled in the northwest part of park is Gazzam Lake, a 13-acre freshwater wetland.

10

GRAND FOREST

In addition to Gazzam Lake, visitors can access a conservancy park with more than 270 acres of forest and trails off of Miller and Mandus Olson roads. Bainrbidge’s Grand Forest contains wetlands, second-growth forests wildlife habitat and an extensive trail system, that was just recently expanded by 36 acres.

Art abounds, surrounds on island Most visitors to Bainbridge Island would consider the community a sleepy town after 6 p.m. everyday. Contrary to popular belief, this is probably one of its best qualities. Fun, enriching activities are happening everywhere on our little Island while the quietude of a safe and family-friendly community remains intact. From theater performances to live music, Bainbridge offers a wide variety of arts and culture. But not many would know that something is happening at the Treehouse Cafe just by driving past Lynwood Center. A part of living on the Island is that you have to know where to look. For instance, Pegasus Coffee House located at the bottom of Madison Avenue has weekly events posted in small font on their marquee above the door. Events are usually Friday and Saturday evenings with acoustic music sessions. While listening to

music, a customer at the cafe can enjoy sipping on a glass of Green Hour wine and bar food, not to mention the Green Hour’s namesake variety of Absinthe cocktails. A cafe that offers Absinthe and bar food at night? The owners of the little establishment take seriously its European style community center. The Island’s opportunities for consuming art and culture don’t stop at music. Every first Friday of the month the art galleries and boutiques down Winslow Way open their doors for an evening of art. The First Friday Art Walks are fun for people of all ages. The galleries offer free wine and cheeses and an open house for anyone who wants to drop in for a little mix and mingle evening. Some galleries like the nonprofit, Bainbridge Arts & Crafts feature different local artists every month. Here’s a list of all the venues on

the Island that offer regular events, performances and showings.

From woods to waves, parks offer great diversity When it comes to open space and outdoor recreation, the citizens of Bainbridge Island can’t get enough. You might think that this Puget Sound island would be satisfied to rest on its nearly 1,000-acre laurels, but no; every year the island renews its commitment and expands its public lands. In the most recent case, the Bainbridge Island Land Trust acquired the 31-acre Hilltop property, linking the east and west segments of the Grand Forest. The Bainbridge Island Metropolitan Park & Recreation District was involved in part of the purchase and will be the property’s overseer; it has also built a trail linking the two Grand Forest properties, which the district also manages. Fort Ward Park, located at the island’s south end, is a 137-acre outpost with a boat launch, underwater park for scuba diving, walking trails, picnic areas, and one campsite for kayakers. Enjoy 4,300 feet of waterfront along Rich Passage or wander through the remains of World War I era gun emplacements inland. Follow Pleasant Beach Drive south from Lynwood, or find the upper parking area off Fort Ward Hill Road. Fort Ward Parade Grounds Park is a 1.5-acre neighborhood park located at the end of Parade Grounds Avenue. The site is a portion of the previous marching and parade area for Fort Ward. It became part of the district’s park system in 2011. Nutes Pond is a 31-acre passive park with a captivating landscape whose central feature is a tranquil pond. Located off Toe Jam Hill Road at the island’s south end, this park purchase was in conjunction with the Open Space Bond fund and conveyed to the park district in 2011. Parking is not yet available. Signage, parking improvements and picnic opportunities are planned through the district’s capital program. Moving north, a trail system connects Fort Ward to Blakely Harbor Park, which boasts 40 acres of waterfront and woods around a historic millpond and stone jetty. Once the center of a booming timber industry, the inlet is a serene spot amid water, sky and birds. Access the park from T Road, or at several other points on foot or bike. Eagledale offers an ambitious little park near the south end of the island, including a cultural arts building and pottery kiln. There is a fenced, off-leash dog area; play equipment; a covered picnic area; ten-

Plans are also in the works to extend Blakely trails to 50-acre Pritchard Park, which sprawls along the south shore of the mouth of Eagle Harbor. While part of Bill Point is closed to the public for industrial cleanup, the sandy beach to the west is one of the most popular on the island. After more than a decade of hard work by its many supporters, the Bainbridge Island Japanese American Exclusion Memorial was dedicated on Aug. 6, 2011, during the annual Japanese American picnic at Pritchard Park, which can be reached by parking at the foot of Taylor Avenue. For a secluded escape, Gazzam Lake Preserve and contiguous properties offer more than 400 mostly wooded acres, in-

cluding a quiet 14-acre freshwater lake/ wetland area. Most folks head up Marshall Road past the recycling center and park at the north gate. For a real workout try the shore-to-shore walk. Park at Lynwood Center and hike 100 yards up Point White Drive to the trailhead at Schel-Chelb Estuary. Follow the path north across Baker Hill Road and hike west until you see a sign for the next access road and trailhead. This rugged trail goes up through the Peters property to Deer Path Lane, where you can jog left to the back entrance of Gazzam Lake. At the north end of the lake, turn left and follow the signs down to the Close property. After a final precipitous hike, take a rest and enjoy the reward for your

The Gazzam Beach property, Close Beach, stretches 550 feet along the rocky beach near the foot of Baker Hill Road. An upland area includes seven rough acres of green space. The park has no amenities at this point but offers spacious views. Just to the south, Point White Pier, a former Mosquito Fleet and ferry dock, is an ideal spot for fishing and scuba diving. Located a few miles north of Gazzam Lake Preserve at 8395 Fletcher Bay Road is Island Center Park, which includes a historic community hall and a picnic area on its three acres. The 90-year-old facility has a rich and varied history, and has a large room, corner stage for a variety of uses, a kitchen and two bathrooms. When park classes are not in session, the facility is available for rent from the park district. Waterfront Park on Eagle Harbor is one of several green spaces tucked into the Winslow area. Its 5.5 acres bridges downtown to the harbor and features a covered picnic building, tennis courts, a lower picnic area, bandstand and boat launch. The connecting Waterfront Trail begins at the ferry and runs west along the water before turning up into downtown Winslow. Hawley Cove, just east of Winslow, offers good ferry watching and, at low tide, 330 feet of driftwood-strewn beach. Its 12 acres include a boardwalk through a wooded upland and a lower marsh. Reach the park from either of two directions. From Winslow, hike down Hawley Way past the sewer plant, then scramble over the driftwood and you’re there. Or park off Wing Point Way, near Azalea Avenue, and look for the trailhead. Follow the

Camp Yeomalt is a longtime scout camp with trails on three acres at the corner of Yeomalt and Park Avenue. The classroom and Depression-era log cabin with performance stage are available for rental. At the southwest corner of Aaron and Grand avenues, Aaron Avenue Tot Lot is a small playground with horseshoe pits and a picnic table. Kenneth H. Gideon Park is a 2.5-acre playground and field at the corner of Grow Avenue and Gideon Lane. Proposed improvements include new play equipment and trail upgrades. Ballplayers of all sizes can boot balls or take a few practice swings at the ten-acre property of Sands Avenue Ball Fields. A regulation soccer pitch and Babe Ruth baseball diamond (with grass infield)

have vaulted the park to the pinnacle of island ball facilities. Rotary Park is another stop for sluggers with two baseball fields and a picnic area on 10 acres. It’s on Weaver Road between High School Road and Wyatt Way. Strawberry Hill Park, west of town, is a decommissioned Nike missile site from the Cold War era and the HQ for park district activities. Aside from offices, the park hosts a tennis court, baseball and softball diamonds, a football field, a play area, a covered picnic area, and an indoor mini gym (call the park district at 842-2306 for programs and rental) all on 25 acres. Also here: a world-class skateboard park, the Rotary Skate Bowl (helmets required). The park is off High School Road, between Fletcher Bay and Sportsman

Club roads. Grand Forest, a 240-acre park in several parts, anchors a mid-island greenway and wildlife corridor. True to its name, the parcels include 75-year-old evergreen forest, wetlands and wildlife habitat that are popular with hikers, bikers and equestrians. Access the 2-mile marked trail in Grand Forest West and the small parking lot on Miller Road. A 2007 Land Trust acquisition will eventually open a public corridor between the western and northern portions of Grand Forest. The 1.2-mile Forest to Sky Trail begins at Grand Forest on Miller Road and dives west into robust woodland. Visitors cross a thriving wetland on a boardwalk and the ruts of a historic logging road before arriving at Battle Point Park. Though known mostly for its World War II military installations, Battle Point Park was named for a much earlier skirmish between a resident Suquamish band and raiders from a northern tribe. The park’s 90 acres of open space include two ponds (complete with ducks), picnic areas and a shelter, a smooth jogging/walking trail, a fitness course, several soccer and softball fields, two tennis courts, a roller hockey court, a sand volleyball court, two basketball courts, horse area and community gardens. The Battle Point Astronomical Association (www.bpastro. org) has an astronomy center in the former “Helix House.” To reach the park, take Miller Road to Arrow Point Drive. From the northern end of Battle Point take a trail across Frey Avenue to find Fairy Dell Park, a 2.5-acre nature area. The park includes shoreline access at the base of a sylvan ravine. Meigs Park is a 120-acre inland wetland and wildlife habitat intended for nature study. It is covered by a conservation easement held

by the Land Trust. Access is off Highway 305 and Koura Road. Ted Olson Nature Preserve encompasses 15 acres of woods with a .3-mile nature trail, a small natural amphitheater and parking for 10 vehicles. The park is on North Madison Avenue, just south of Wilkes Elementary. For a day out with a hoofed companion, Manzanita Park offers 120 acres of woods laced with horse and pedestrian trails. Its 2.27-mile nature trail is best enjoyed in late summer and early fall. There is also a covered picnic shelter and a controlled group camping area. The park is next to the Saddle Club off Day Road West. Hidden Cove Ball Fields, located on Phelps Road (northeast off Day Road and Highway 305), hosts ball fields and access to an extensive trail network. The 9.5-acre site has a Little League field and a soccer practice area. Take a trail north to Hidden Cove Park and another six-acre parcel, which has space for picnics, 200 feet of shoreline and a dock for small watercraft. Nearby T’Chookwap Park, maintained by the park district, is a half-acre water view property on Spargur Loop Road, with a footpath to the bluff overlooking Port Madison. Facing east on Puget Sound, Fay Bainbridge Park showcases a 1,420-foot sandy beach with impressive driftwood piles. It also has the only overnight camping facilities on the island, with 36 standard sites, 26 water-only hookup sites and 10 primitive spaces for tents. The park, which previously was a State Parks property, includes a play area, two covered picnic facilities, volleyball and campfire pits. Find the 17-acre park off Sunrise Drive. West Port Madison Nature Preserve has 13 acres with 0.2-mile trail and picnic shelters, barbecue pits, and bird watching. From SR-305, follow West Port Madison Road to County Park Road and turn right. Bloedel Reserve, just north of Port Madison, is an internationally renowned public garden composed of 150 acres of forest, stately gardens, ponds, meadows, and the Bloedel family’s former estate home. This renowned garden welcomes the public. Go east on Agatewood Road to the gated entrance. Located deep inside Eagle Harbor off Weaver Avenue, the 4-acre Strawberry Plant Park property, once a berry cannery and commercial center, underwent shore-

Bainbridge Island Almanac 2014

Where to get that Bainbridge body?

Five very different island fitness options BY LUCIANO MARANO

“I hated every minute of training,” Muhammad Ali said once. “But I said, ‘Don’t quit. Suffer now and live the rest of your life as a champion.’” That’s all well and good for The Greatest, but what about the rest of us who maybe aren’t out to take on the whole world? Most people’s fitness goals are a little more attainable than The People’s Champion, and are probably accomplishable with a minimum amount of suffering. It could even be a little fun. So, whether your goal is to run a marathon, climb a mountain or simply lose those last few lingering holiday pounds, do not despair for you are not alone. In today’s health-savvy world there are as many fitness options as there are fitness goals, and with an abundance of organizations located right here on Bainbridge Island there’s something for everyone and every schedule. Whether you’re a classic weight-lifting

Arnold Schwarzenegger disciple, a cycling psycho of the Lance Armstrong school, a more modern yoga aficionado or anything in between, Bainbridge Island has a gym for you. Below are five very different fitness institutions and their contact information. They are by no means every workout option available, but they are a nice selection representative of what’s out there. FOR THE CLASSIC GYM EXPERIENCE: Island Fitness Phone: 206-842-5720 Web: www.island-fitness.com Location: 190 Madison Ave. North What they have: A wide variety of equipment and services included personal trainers, numerous classes and clubs, nutritional coaching, massages and much more. This is a great place to start or renew your athletic life, or to take yourself to the next level.

Bainbridge Island Almanac 2014

Top five events not to miss this summer BY CECILIA GARZA

It’s not difficult to get people outside on a Pacific Northwestern summer day. But these five events will give Bainbridge visitors even more reason to get out and going on one of our precious summer weekends.

1

GRAND OLD FOURTH

Bainbridge Island’s Fourth of July two-day long festivities give visitors and residents a chance to soak in the new season and their American pride. On July 3, a community Street Dance and Barbecue has children street chalking down Winslow Way, adults enjoying locally brewed beers and the whole family digging into barbecue. This of course happens all while live music sets the mood to get the whole family on their feet until the nighttime hours. The Grand Old Fourth parade and festival continues the party into July 4. After the essential Fourth of July parade, booths with food and crafts are set up alongside a dunk tank, a classic car show, another beer garden and more live music.

2

BAINBRIDGE BLUEGRASS FESTIVAL

Bainbridge’s annual bluegrass hoedown brings in musicians, food vendors, arts & crafts, nonprofit organizations and more than 2,500 attendees from across the greater Seattle area every July. Located at the natural amphitheater at Battle Point Park, the event offers ample room for attendees to bring blankets, picnics and folding chairs for a day of fun, dancing and music on the lawn. As the event encourages a full-family attendance, it also selects a different family oriented nonprofit to donate the proceeds. Last year the festival donated to PAWs of Bainbridge Island and North Kitsap. The next festival will take place Saturday, July 26.

3

BAINBRIDGE IN BLOOM

The annual event is the largest fundraising events for the Bainbridge Island Arts & Humanities Council. Likewise, over the last 25 years of Bainbridge in Bloom, gardeners and garden enthusiasts have flooded the island to visit the year’s pick of private gardens. Every year the Bloom’s organizing committee spends August to February selecting five gardens in five different island neighborhoods. The

The brothers will appear at the Bainbridge Bluegrass Festival again this year. homeowners for each of the gardens then spend the next five months weeding, pruning and making sure the space is at its full floral potential. Ticket-holders for the tour have access to each of the gardens by either shuttle or bike route. The 2014 Bloom will take place July 11-12.

4

TASTE OF LYNWOOD

Every September, Bainbridge residents and visitors head to the south-end of the island for a full day of free live music, arts & crafts vendors, a variety of foods, a beer garden and activities for the whole family. The event brings people outside on one of the last days of summer while it also gets everyone digging into Bainbridge food and arts. The 2013 block party included main stage music guests, The Paperboys, LeRoy Bell and His Only Friends and an after-party performance by Massy Ferguson. The event also included a “Kids Zone” with rides, games and music for the little ones. Visitors can catch a shuttle to Bainbridge’s Lynwood Center from the Seattle-Bainbridge Ferry Terminal.

5

THE 54TH ANNUAL ROTARY AUCTION AND RUMMAGE SALE

An historical event, many question if Bainbridge’s annual rotary auction is the largest rummage sale in the nation. Every year, the Bainbridge rotary collects approximately 6 acres of gently used items to resell. There’s an entire parking lot filled with sofas sitting armrest-to-armrest. There is a lawn of skis and snowboards. A corner of another parking lot with an inventory of 10 bike shops. Right next to the tent of furniture, there’s a tool sale, and indoors one can find a room of electronics and a room of jewelry. The sale attracts shoppers by the hundreds, most of which begin lining up an hour or more early outside the sale yard entrance. For surely, there is no better way to guarantee the purchase of that dinghy sailboat you saw at the auction’s preview last week, than to run for it before anyone else can get to it. In a record breaking sale, the 2013 auction and rummage sale grossed $443,326.09. The 2014 Rotary Auction and Rummage Sale will take place Saturday, June 28 at Woodward Middle School.

Bainbridge Island Almanac 2014

Chamber recognizes businesses, citizens that make Bainbridge a good place to be BY CECILIA GARZA

In their 2013 Membership Awards, the Bainbridge Island Chamber of Commerce has recognized five extraordinary island businesses, a nonprofit and its pick for Citizen of the Year. Every year, the chamber selects businesses and community leaders that set Bainbridge apart from other cities. This year, Bainbridge Organic Distillers were chosen as Small Business of the Year. The distillery opened for business in 2009 and has since become an integral part of the community, the chamber said of the business. It has helped organize, sponsor and create local events for organizations like Bainbridge Arts & Humanities, Bainbridge Kiwanis Bike Event and the Port Townsend Film Festival. The family-owned business has donated to almost every event on the island this past year, including 35 charity auctions, the chamber recognized. The distillery also has a “Thanks For Your Service” program where a military service person receives their first bottle of spirits on the house. Selected as the Medium-Sized Business of the Year, The Beach House at Pleasant Beach is considered the new gem of the island’s south end. Though it opened less than a year ago, the restaurant has already collected a loyal following and a reputation for tasty food and excellent service. For Large Business of the Year, the 30-year-old fly fishing business, Sage, was unequivocally chosen for being a staple of Bainbridge Island and its success as a growing business. Sage was founded in 1980 by legendary rod designer Don Green and has since been committed to building the world’s finest performance fly fishing rods. Over the last three decades, Sage has partnered with island educators, including Sakai Middle School’s fifth- and sixthgrade STEM instructors for their “Salmon in the Classroom” program. The company has also donated equipment to the Bainbridge Island Metropolitan Park & Recreation’s Outdoor Program and has offered internship opportunities to students at the Bainbridge Graduate Institute. Sage started with six employees in a 1,500-square-foot manufacturing space,

President and CEO of Town & Country Market Larry Nakata, was presented the Chairman’s Choice Award for the 2013 Bainbridge Island Chamber of Commerce Membership Awards. and has since grown to 175 employees working in a 30,000-square-foot place. Following Sage, Davis Studio Architecture and Design was selected for Sustain-

able Business of the Year. The firm is the principal architect for the Grow Community development, which has garnered recognition as the fourth “Most Sustainable Neighborhood in the U.S.” Though the firm was founded in 2002 by Jonathan and Mary Jo Davis, Jonathan Davis has been incorporating sustainable technologies into his designs since 1985. His projects have been built to LEED, BuiltGreen and One Planet endorsement. In 2013, Davis Studio received the AWB Environmental Excellence Award for Environmental Innovator. In addition to his architectural work, Davis has also been a board member of Sustainable Bainbridge since 2012. As Nonprofit of the Year, the Bainbridge Public Library wasn’t a difficult choice. The library embodies the spirit of public-private partnership, the chamber said of the selection. The library is a community collaboration: It is owned by the citizens of

Larry Nakata, third-generation entrepreneur to the Nakata family-owned Town & Country Market, was chosen as the recipient of this year’s Chairman’s Choice Award. Nakata worked as the manager of the Poulsbo location in the 1980s and ‘90s until he took over as the president and CEO of the company in 2000. Over the years, Nakata has worked to continue to promote and embody the concept his grandfather Jitsuzo Nakata and other Issei immigrants brought with them: “kaizen,” meaning continuous improvement. In 2007 — the same year that Town & Country celebrated its 50th anniversary — Nakata was recognized as the chamber’s Business Person of the Year. He has also served on the board of directors of Associated Grocers. And in his time as a key component of Town & Country, he has been involved in numerous community groups and projects, including Downtown Property Owners Group, Leadership Kitsap and as honorary co-chair of the Bainbridge Community Foundation Campaign. Nakata was one of two individuals recognized by the chamber. The Citizen of the Year award was presented to former Bainbrigde councilwoman Debbi Lester. Through her term on the council and as the founder and publisher of Art Access, a quarterly guide to the arts in Puget Sound, Lester was recognized for her community leadership and activism. Her work encouraged political involvement and discussion while at the same time it promoted green spaces, public art and community gardens.

What’s good here?

A culinary survey of Bainbridge Island BY LUCIANO MARANO

Picture it … You and your friends are spending the day on Bainbridge Island, or maybe you live here and you’re hosting some visitors. Bainbridge is a great place to spend a weekend, or even just a day. There’s no shortage of ways to spend your leisure time here. There are great galleries to visit with beautiful offerings from local artists, there are numerous close by examples of the natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest, you can see first-class plays and musicals at the

local theatre, there are fascinating museums full of art and history and an abundance of cool shops and stores to browse whether you’re in downtown Lynwood, Winslow or anywhere in between. We’ve got a brewery, a distillery and several great wineries. But where do you eat? Ah, yes, the eternal question of “What’s good here?” Dinner: the daily summit of man’s culinary odyssey. Luckily for you, and for all of us on

Bainbridge, the island has at least as many great dining options as it has any other kind of entertainment possibility. We asked some prominent members of the community to weigh in on their favorite island eateries, and their go-to dishes when they get there. Their answers are below, along with some Review staff recommendations too. While it’s certainly not a complete list of all the island’s great chow down spots, it’s a great place to start.

So, given all the options for great eats on the island, what are you in the mood for? RICK CHANDLER Curator, Bainbridge Island Historical Museum “I like to eat at the Harbour Public House, out on the deck if the weather is good or at the bar during the winter. I enjoy the Salmon Tartine or the BLT or the Caesar Salad with a side of pub fries. The nachos plate is HUGE!” JAKE HALEY Principal, Bainbridge High School “My favorite place to eat is Streamliner Diner. My favorite dish is Green Eggs or Homemade Pasta for dinner.” DOUG SCHULZE City Manager, City of Bainbridge Island “I’m not sure I can pick my favorite place to eat on Bainbridge Island because I think there are so many great places to dine out. I’m going to say Hitchcock Restaurant is my favorite, because that is where my wife and I had dinner the evening I was hired by the city council as city manager. I

olistic, patient-centered care is the guiding philosophy of my practice. For 20 years, I have treated patients of all ages and conditions to help them eliminate pain, feel healthier, and become stronger and more functional in every aspect of their lives. I don’t just treat a symptom in isolation. I work with my patients to address every aspect of their lifestyle to achieve comprehensive, lasting well-being through therapeutic treatment and education. I work with my patients to address posture, work habits, ergonomics, diet, exercise, and emotional health, always with the belief that getting better is a partnership between my patient and myself. In my free time, I enjoy backpacking in the Olympic Mountains, road biking and mountain biking, swimming (most recently doing a 2.5 mile leg in Arms Around Bainbridge) and spending time with my three beautiful sons.

ainbridge Island’s working women do something more as they juggle the many demands of work and family. They also contribute, over and over again, to the philanthropic health and civic life of our community. They give to our auctions. They take on leadership positions in those organizations helping to educate our children. They volunteer for the many groups working to house, clothe and feed Islanders in need. So this week, take a moment to say thank you to the many women who, in one fashion or another, make this Island run. Their contributions are immeasurable. The profiles featured in this section are paid advertising. We at The Bainbridge Island Review salute them.

Ferries — instrumental to island life From a ferry yard on the shores of Eagle Harbor to a boat being included on the seal of the city, ferries are tightly woven into the fabric of Bainbridge Island. Washington has 22 ferries running between 20 ports throughout Puget Sound. One of the most popular routes is between the island and Seattle. With two boats servicing the island — the Tacoma and the Wenatchee — the route is a major gateway onto the Kitsap Peninsula. The ferry run between Bainbridge and Seattle carried 6.1 million riders in 2012, including 2.9 million walk-on passengers.
