right paint for your project.

CHOOSE A PAINT STORE

HELP Don’t be afraid of getting expert advice. Even the most experienced housepainters sometimes need guidance. That’s where a quality paint store comes in.

Paint is one of the best ways to update the look of your house without breaking your budget.

Not only will the best stores sell good products, they will also have staff people who are ready to offer suggestions and recommendations for your particular situation. They are very knowledgeable about their products.

A coat of fresh paint on the walls can change the atmosphere quickly and easily. Whether you do it yourself or hire a professional, finding a great paint store is a key part of the process.

They should also offer tips on how to apply the paint. You can spend money on high-end paint products, but applying them incorrectly will give you terrible results.

Keep these aspects in mind when choosing a paint store. SELECTION You can choose from an enormous variety of paint colors and textures. Oil-based and latex paints are available in a wide range of finishes and compositions. They are also available in different grades. Cheaper paint may be thinner, messier and harder to apply than its thicker, premium competitor. You will also have to determine if you want to work with a primer. Some brands require specific primer, while other brands have products that are “paint and primer in one.” A good paint store will have far more than just one line of products. They will stock paint designed for concrete floors, industrial paints that can withstand certain temperatures or chemicals, paints that will reduce mold growth. It may seem overwhelming, but more choices will give you a better results and hold up over time. Knowing your specific priorities and considerations will help guide you toward the

The paint store you choose should be able to offer you expert advice on all aspects of your project, from product selection to prep work and clean-up. DESIGN With so many color and style selections, a good paint store can offer design advice for getting the look you want. When it comes to paint, there are endless possibilities, and the best paint store staff will help you navigate through the selections. They will know the latest style trends and offer recommendations for color palettes that work well together. If you bring them a fabric swatch, they should be able to create a duplicate color in paint. Choosing the right paints and accessories takes experience and -- quite often -- some trial and error. Be certain to get prices for mixing sample colors up front. Don’t be afraid to put small quantities of these sample colors on your walls to test out your design. Once you’ve selected the right colors, go back to the store to purchase larger quantities of the paints to complete your project.

Summer Renews

NORTH KITSAP’S 2014 “HOW TO” GUIDE

Memories of Summers gone by... My mother came from a very large close-knit family.

JULY 25, 2014

Every summer she organized our family reunion consisting of her sisters, brothers, and their children. She would cook wonderful meals and the kitchen would fill the house with wonderful aromas. Dad would keep everyone entertained and keep the family all laughing. Mom no longer hosts the reunions since Dad had passed away. Her siblings now take turns having those family gatherings and picks mom up to take her to them. At the last gathering she looked extremely tired. I noticed that her frame was much smaller and was a bit more withdrawn. After speaking with the uncles and aunts we thought it would be best if we found her a new home where others could keep her company and occupied throughout the days. Somewhere that would take care of her the same way she had taken care of us all those years. We did not just want anyplace to be her home but a place where she had activities, warmth, care and most importantly love. We decided that Liberty Shores & Harbor House in Poulsbo would be the new home that would be perfect for mom. Liberty Shores & Harbor House is a trusted and deficiency free senior care provider specializing in assisted living and memory care. They offer the finest care, given by the most committed staff.

good idea to know about care facilities before you’re facing a crisis. Review facility contracts. Make sure you understand whether you can break the contract if you are unsatisfied with care or need to move to another facility as well as the circumstances under which the administrators might move your loved one to another unit.

CHOOSE THE BEST ALZHEIMER’S CARE COMMUNITY

Look for flexibility. You need to be able to visit at any hour, as long as you aren’t disturbing the residents. Likewise, check to make sure that the facility will allow an aide from the company of your choosing to spend time with your loved one. Some have contracts with specific health aide companies. Visit at random times. Setting up a tour is essential, but it’s also a good idea to drop by on weekends or in the evenings to get a better feel for the care facility.

Start the process of finding the right Alzheimer’s care facility for your loved one early to have time to carefully consider choices. Finding a memory care community should mean considering the needs of the patient as well as the entire family. According to recent data from the Alzheimer’s Association, some 70 percent of people with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia live at home and get by with help from family and friends. As their condition worsens, however, they may need more care and attention than their loved ones can provide. Alzheimer’s disease has a fairly predictable course of gradual decline, so it’s never too early to start looking at the residential care facilities in your area (or in your loved one’s area) and planning ahead. Even if you or a family member can provide most of the Alzheimer’s care at home right now, chances are that one day you will need to move your loved one into a place where trained staff will provide most of the care. Research shows, for example, that Alzheimer’s patients have three times as many hospital stays as other people their age. At a certain point, their safety — and yours — may be at risk without outside help. Finding a care facility can be difficult and gut wrenching, not to mention expensive, but putting off investigating your options can make the process even more painful down the road. The first step is finding out what care facilities are available in your community and deciding on the option that best fits your needs. GUIDELINES FOR FINDING GOOD CARE Here are some ideas for finding the best choice for your loved one: Be realistic about your loved one’s needs. It’s hard for family to come to grips with their loved one’s true needs. But this is essential for finding the right match. For example, placing someone who has physical or speech problems in a setting where most other residents are high-functioning will probably result in the added burden of social isolation. Always make sure that the staff is prepared for dementia patients. Get legal paperwork in order. A power of attorney [POA] for healthcare and financial decisions will be needed by the POA to make decisions about care and money/property. The best time to get legal paperwork in order is when the person is not very impaired yet. Think about when to move. Every family has their own threshold for the timing of a move. Often, a period of hospitalization because of injury convinces the caregiver that a move is necessary. Still, it’s a

NOTICE THE STAFF ATTITUDE. Hire an advocate. Finding the right nursing home or assisted living facility takes a lot of effort. If your budget allows, consider hiring an expert to help you. Professionals such as a geriatric care manager or a social worker who focuses on elder care issues could do an assessment for you and make a recommendation, based on their objective view of your loved one’s needs and their knowledge of local care facilities. These professionals can also be retained to check on your loved one after the move. Know your budget. Alzheimer’s care is expensive. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, the average cost for basic services in an assisted living facility is more than $38,000 a year, and the average cost for a private room in an Alzheimer’s special care unit of a nursing home is more than $87,000 a year. Medicare, Medicaid, and other forms of insurance may help cover the costs of this care if you meet their specific requirements, but out-of-pocket costs may still be several thousands of dollars annually, particularly for patients in nursing home facilities with special care units. Know what resources you have in addition to coverage from any health plan or long-term care plans. If you find a great place that is slightly more expensive than you can afford, try negotiating on the costs. TRY THE FOOD. Be skeptical about aggressive marketing. Beautiful grounds and flyers that show residents happily participating in group activities are alluring but might not represent your loved one’s possible experience. Consider location. If family members live out of town, investigate care facilities that are close to a major airport. It’s important for people to be able to visit. One reason that people resist putting someone with Alzheimer’s into a facility is that it can feel like giving up on the work of care, but visiting regularly is still important, so plan for it. Ask about next steps. Find out where your loved one is likely to be moved if the need for care suddenly ramps up dramatically. Ask what hospital residents are taken to in emergencies. JOIN SUPPORT GROUPS. Choosing a care facility for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease is one of the most important decisions you’ll ever make.

HOW TO

CHOOSE A PAVING SERVICE

Quality asphalt paving says plenty about your home or business. Improving the beauty, durability, safety and functionality of your property AND adds value when you sell it. If you want to pavement to last, however, you must choose a good paving company. Whether for residential or commercial jobs, here are some things to consider. PROCESS Understanding the process of laying the asphalt pavement will help you understand what you need and which company is best for you. Make sure you have the steps they will take written out in a proposal. All the sq. ft that was measured etc. you don’t want a contractor to add change orders at the end that should have been foreseen or discussed prior to starting the project. The preparation is key as well to hiring the right paving company. Ask to meet the Estimator, and walk the project with them. You need to be comfortable with the company. Ask questions! Tell your paving company how the surface will be used. If you are paving a commercial lot, for instance, provide them with an estimated traffic count with a note about the heaviest trucks that might use it.

JULY 25, 2014

Review the proposal and terms. Only sign when you are completely comfortable with the company. OTHER WORK Check labor and industries for information about your contractor. Previous work can tell you a lot about a paving company. Request referrals from past customers. In particular, look for work that is similar to what you need. Maybe you need your pavement for your driveway. Look for similar driveways the company has installed in your area. Do the edges of the driveway look crisp and clean? Has the surface held up? Whenever possible, ask the property owner about their experiences during construction. Did the company finish the job on time and on budget? Were their expectations met? It is a preferable to look for older work the company has done. If pavement installed years ago has held up against the test of time, that is the sign of a quality job. INSURANCE For your protection, verify that the paving company is properly insured. Many homeowner and business insurance policies don’t cover accidents that occur by contractors working on your property. Uninsured companies open you up to liabilities for any injuries or accidents that occur during construction. Only consider using pavement companies with strong insurance policies. It will give you peace of mind.

The best paving companies will have deep roots in your community. Climates and types of soil vary around the country. A company with a long track record understands your area. They know what challenges various pavements face throughout the year.

• What out-of-pocket costs should I expect when buying?

CHOOSE A REAL ESTATE AGENT

• Where do you advertise? How many websites do you advertise on? • Can I see some marketing samples? • How does the selling process work? What should I do to prepare? • What are my costs to sell? TRUST, COMMUNICATION, AND FOLLOW-UP

All real estate agents are not alike, and there are many factors that go into choosing the right agent for your specific needs. Here are some tips on what to look for and questions to ask when searching for the right agent to help you buy or sell a home.

How did you feel with the agents you interviewed? Did they listen to you? Did you feel like you could trust their expertise and what they were telling you? Who will best represent your interests? How will they follow-up with you and keep you informed?

The best place to start is by asking your friends, family, and coworkers for referrals! You can also ask your social networks or search online for reviews and sales histories of local agents.

• How frequently will you update me on market trends?

Buying or selling a home is a huge financial decision, so it makes sense to interview several agents. Here are some questions to ask when you’re screening agents to assess their capability, knowledge, and if they are clear communicators. Don’t be afraid to ask them for a list of referrals or testimonials!

• How do you track timelines on a contract, and how will you keep us up-to-date?

• How many sales have you closed this year? • Do you work as an individual or as part of • What type of continuing education courses have you attended recently? • What is the condition of the local market? Is it a buyer’s market or seller’s market? • Have you taken any negotiation classes or do you have any negotiation certifications? • Do you have any VIP programs or services? • What are the steps in the buying process? • How well do you know the area?

• How will you let us know about new homes that might work for us? • Do you follow up on offers you submit for us? • Do you follow up with agents for feedback after showings? How will you share the feedback • Will you keep me up-to-date on your marketing efforts? • How frequently will you update me on market trends? • How do you track timelines on a contract, and how will you keep us up-to-date? After interviewing, does the agent follow-up with you to check in? Do they deliver anything they promised you such as a marketing plan, comparable property information, or market trends A good real estate agent can be hard to find, so be sure to review your agent online after a transaction to let other people know what it was like to work with them. If you had a good experience, keep their information to share with friends and family – or in case you need their help again in the future!

CHOOSE AN AUTO REPAIR SHOP

Every car requires repairs or service at some point. It doesn’t matter whether the car is new or used. It may need tires, oil changes or even a new engine at some point. Having a good relationship with a highquality auto repair shop will save you time and hassle when your vehicle needs an immediate repair. If you are unsure about a particular shop, take your car in for a regular service and maintenance visit. After all, it will help the car run better since your car needs preventive maintenance anyway, take it to get an oil change or air conditioning check. It is a great way to see if the shop will offer you great customer service and if the facility is presentable. Here are some other things to keep in mind when looking for an auto repair shop: • Most people choose an auto repair shop based on a referral from friends, family or coworkers. Less than 40 percent of new customers are walkins.

JULY 25, 2014

problems with newer cars. For example, can your prospective shop handle brake systems, electrical components and warranty repairs? Do they provide a loaner, rental car, or shuttle service while your car is being repaired? • Inquire about their customer satisfaction policy. Look around the shop. Is the equipment in good condition? Is it clean, welllit and organized? These factors all contribute to a level of professionalism, gaining customers’ trust, and for optimal service. • Look for brand names and proper certification. Does the auto repair shop use brandname parts? These parts are engineered to meet the manufacturer’s specifications and will likely come with a warranty. • Are the auto technicians certified by a specific car manufacturer, the National Institute for Automotive Services or Automotive Service Excellence? Is the shop approved by or a member of: Automobile Association of America, Automotive Service Association, Better Business Bureau, Car Care Council or is a member of the local Chamber of Commerce? If so, this indicates a higher level of customer satisfaction with the ability to adequately perform the services advertised. • Compare the services and fees of each shop in the area to find out the average price ranges, most facilities will be within in about 8-12% of one another on estimates, if not be skeptical of the estimate as it may not be a complete estimate.

• The Better Business Bureau can inform you about the repair shop’s performance and reliability.

Does the service facility have an appointment reminder system in place for you? Can you make appointments online? Can they send you text reminder messages for those appointments?

• People who travel often usually work with shops that offer a national warranty. For instance, a warranty of 12,000 miles or 12 months is handy for issues that keep cropping up, particularly in older cars. Ask your repair facility about the warranty they offer, in some cases you may find shops that offer a longer warranty than the industry standard of 12 months or 12k miles.

Don’t pick a shop based on cost alone; ask yourself if it is the “cheap cost” of the repair or the “quality of repair” you are most interested in? Poor repair work will mean higher costs in the long run. Once you have found a shop you trust, establish a good working relationship with your mechanic. When you have great communication, getting repair work completed will be less painful.

• Ask about the shop’s range of services. They will need the latest technology to diagnose

restaurants.

CHOOSE LOCAL FINE DINING

Eating at a local restaurant is an excellent way to help your community. Food connoisseurs know that eating closer to home will give them the most flavorful experiences. It is a smart, fresh alternative for people who are looking to spend money on quality food instead of travel expenses. The local dining movement focuses on using food as a means to creating jobs and supporting local economies. Here are a few more reasons why you should join this movement.

HELPING YOUR LOCAL ECONOMY Americans like to complain about our economy and how jobs are going overseas. Have you ever wondered why that is happening? It is because we are buying more things that are produced overseas -- including our food. The local dining movement asks people to eat at their neighborhood restaurants. Every meal you eat at a neighborhood restaurant helps your community. Not only are you supporting the restaurant. You are also helping the farmers, dairy operators and workers in your area. Many restaurants are part of corporate chains where the profits are shipped to their faraway headquarters and not spent within your community. The more locally focused a business is, the better it will be for your community. GOOD FOR THE ENVIRONMENT

FRESHNESS When produce travels over great distances, it loses its character. The color drains from its skin and the flavor diminishes over time. Local restaurants often use meats, dairy and produce from nearby farms. When food hasn’t been frozen or refrigerator for a long period of time, it crackles with flavor and aroma. That’s because the food still retains its essence. Your neighborhood eateries offer the quickest way to get food from the farm to your table. They are also constantly changing the menu to match what’s in season. Great chefs are inspired by nature and flavor combinations that are available throughout the year. Food aficionados appreciate new dishes and attention to detail. Local chefs know exactly where their foods originate -- and might even know the farmers personally. They know the highest quality, freshest ingredients will be served at their

When food has to travel long distances, it hurts the environment. Shipping ingredients uses a lot of fuel. It puts more carbon emissions into the atmosphere and burns more oil. Consuming food grown close to home is a better option because it takes less energy to transport the food to your plate. Restaurants that choose to buy from local suppliers are also typically focused on helping the environment in other ways, too. They will look for creative ideas to recycle more and consume less. The local dining movement is about more than eating delicious food. It helps restore the connections between farmers, restaurants and neighbors. It creates a mutually beneficial relationship that makes your community stronger and healthier. That is something that everyone can support.

TALK TO FAMILY AND FRIENDS

CHOOSE A USED CAR DEALER

For most folks buying a used car can be something akin to a root canal gone bad. Your goal is to find a gently used vehicle without spending the children’s inheritance. Avoid purchasing a mechanical liability by doing your research first, don’t let your eyes fall in love before your heart and wallet agree. Being well-informed will help you avoid unnecessary heartburn and hardship. After some basic homework follow these tips to find a great used car dealer. CHOOSE YOUR VEHICLE Knowing what you want will help you save time, effort, and money. You may not know the exact make and model but you should at least have an idea of the DNA. Are you searching for a sports car, SUV, pickup, soccer van, or something that will drive the neighbors into a jealous rage? SEARCH THE PRICING GUIDES Figuring out your budget is a key component. How much do you want to spend? What’s your monthly payment cap? Can you get the lid off of the kids’ piggybank? Check out Kelly Bluebook at www.kbb.com or Nada Guides at www.nada.com. Keep in mind that these guides are simply that, guides, not “exacts”. Look at internet sites and car websites to get a better idea of asking prices. Just remember that trim levels and accessories can make a huge difference in pricing.

Virtually everyone (of legal age) drives a car. Ask them about their purchase and servicing experience. Who treated them like a long lost relative, or better yet, like royalty? Word of mouth is one of the best indicators of a business that deserves your business. VISIT THE CAR STORE When you have narrowed your search for a great used car store pay them a visit. Look at the showroom and overall cleanliness. Ask how long they have been in business. What awards have they received for exceptional customer service and satisfaction? DRIVE THE CARS After you’re comfortable with your visit to the car store ask to drive a couple of models that meet your criteria. Make sure there are no unusual smells, shakes, rattles, or piddle spots in the driveway. Ask to see the vehicle “get ready” and “service” forms. Have them provide a copy of the Carfax or AutoCheck report. Get an explanation if there is anything you don’t understand on the print-out. Don’t hesitate to ask questions. Does it come with a warranty? Will the car store stand behind the purchase? Is an extended service plan available? Do they offer a return policy? So, the bottom line…….do you love the color? Does it fit into your garage? Did it scare the dog? The better you love your new Grocery Getter, the better maintenance and care you will give your new friend. Never beg to spend your money. The relationship between you and your car dealer/repair center should be much like the relationship between you and your family doctor. If you’ve got a great car store, stick with them. It wouldn’t hurt to drop off a dozen hot chocolate chip cookies now and then either. Happy Motoring.

KNOW IF DENTAL IMPLANTS ARE RIGHT FOR YOU

PAGE 11

The initial assessment should include a full dental examination, including medical and dental histories, radiographs and perhaps a CT scan to ensure that there is adequate bone density and to evaluate the shape of your jaw. A bone graph may be necessary to strengthen the area where the implant will be placed. Tobacco users are not usually considered good candidates for dental implants because their bone and gum tissue tends to be weaker than non-smokers. Most often, smokers will be asked to quit before receiving the implant.

Having a beautiful smile can improve self-confidence which affects one’s outlook on life. Unfortunately, many people of all ages lose natural teeth for a sundry of reasons which can include accidents, genetic disorders or periodontal disease.

Most insurance companies include dental implants as an accepted procedure. It is always important to have a clear understanding of the insurance coverage before proceeding.

Implant dentures are an excellent choice when considering replacing missing teeth, they look as natural and lifelike as regular dentures. However, this denture fits over an imbedded implant which has fused to the bone. While these dentures may be more expensive, the investment may be appreciated considering the greater stability inherent in an implant denture.

To determine if an individual is a candidate for implant dentures here are a few points to consider:

Also, implant partial dentures or bridges do not rely on neighboring teeth for support, which means one does not have to jeopardize other natural teeth to keep the partial denture or crown in place. Implants often feel more comfortable, and are easy to maintain. The implant consist of root-like titanium pegs placed into the bone, which can serve as anchors for the dental appliance. There are a variety of implants but they all serve to anchor the denture or crown in place. The first step in deciding whether implants are a good option is to get a complete dental health assessment. Candidates need healthy gums and bone tissue for the dental implants to be secured to the bone.

1. Is the patient in overall good health? 2. Does the patient have healthy gums and adequate bone density to anchor implants? 3. Does the patient show determination to maintain a daily regime of adequate oral hygiene? 4. Does the patient agree to maintain a schedule of regular dental check-ups? Generally, if an individual answers yes to these questions, they are a good candidate for dental implants. Implants can be a comfortable, natural way to a beautiful smile.

CHOOSE AUTO ACCESSORIES

Cars are an extension of our personalities. Like the clothes you wear or the hairstyle you choose, the car or truck you drive says a lot about who you are. Unless you have a boring, average personality, you probably don’t want to drive a boring, average vehicle. GO CUSTOM Customizing your car is one of the best ways to add pizazz to your driving experience. Find a local auto parts store who offers a wide variety of options to customize your car or truck. The best custom vehicles are works of art, so look for a store staffed by people who are passionate about their work. They should be knowledgeable about their products and installations. BRAND NAMES It always pays to consider the quality of brands each auto parts store carries. Good stores offer only the best products with a strong long-term reputation. Some people may try to save money with off-brand accessories, it is highly recommended that you stick with known manufacturers. They are more likely to stand behind their products. When you can find a good selection, quality products, knowledgeable employees, you will be well on your way to creating a dynamic-looking vehicle that reflects your personality.

becomes harder to find excuses to start exercising.

CHOOSE A GYM

Once you’ve decided to join a gym, you’ll likely have a number of facilities to choose from. Keep in mind that gyms should be inspiring places. You will need to feel comfortable and motivated to keep coming back. Go and visit a fitness facility at a time you think you might be working out and see who is there. You might be surprised to find people that you know--friends and neighbors--that you were unaware were members of that particular facility. Does the facility feel comfortable to you? Is the staff friendly and helpful? Are fitness classes of interest to you, scheduled at a time that is convenient for you?

Interested in getting started in a gym? When people think of fitness facilities, they still tend to imagine a facility filled with thin, beautiful people wearing expensive workout clothes and exercising on space age equipment. In reality, people of all shapes, sizes and ages join fitness facilities. In fact, the over-50 crowd has been the fastest growing segment of the fitness population, and men and women in their 80’s and 90’s can often be found having fun and exercising in gyms. Senior exercise classes are well entrenched at many health clubs. Equipment need not be fancy, just effective. Most people wear comfortable, loose fitting clothing. Exercise has numerous beneficial effects on mind and body. Too many, in fact, to mention here. Most notably though, are a reduction in stress and blood pressure and improved mood and sleep. Exercise can also help reduce the risks of some types of cancer, type 2 diabetes, and osteoporosis. Building more muscle helps you burn calories more effectively. Many people have a hard time forming good fitness habits. Too many people sign up for a gym membership, go the the facility three or four times, and then never return. Some individuals are very good about a home-based fitness regimen and exercise on a consistent basis. Others create excuses and find reasons why they do not have time to exercise. Obviously, it can be hard to stay motivated. Going to a gym and participating in exercise classes with your friends and peers is an excellent way to get and stay motivated. Participating in a class at a consistent time several days a week gives your workouts purpose and priority. Many individuals have a difficult time working out individually, and thus a fitness class is a great way to get started. Paying for a gym membership increases your chances of working out. Becoming a member is a great opportunity to meet people with similar health goals who can offer motivation and support. It simply

Walk around and see the facility. Is it clean? Does it have the amenities that you are interested in? A pool? The equipment you are interested in? Well-lit and spacious exercise rooms? Racquetball courts? Locker rooms with saunas or steam rooms? Does it have a large and varied fitness class schedule with lots of different types of classes offered? Having a large variety of classes to choose from is often the cure for exercise boredom. Many older individuals with joint pain and arthritis benefit from water aerobics classes. Buoyancy of the water reduces stress on an individual’s joints, yet the water’s resistance offers an ability to get a comprehensive workout at the same time. Feel the water. Is it warm enough to feel comfortable to get into? Some large pools keep their water temperature at a lower level simply to avoid the enormous cost of heating the pool. Smaller pools often offer a warmer water temperature and a quieter workout. Does the facility employ personal trainers that can help get you started on an exercise program and keep you motivated to continue your program? A good personal trainer will offer a health assessment before working out with you. He or she can get an understanding of your physical fitness level and work with you to expand your fitness in a safe manner. Does the personal training staff at the facility have credentials? There are a number of national organizations that certify personal trainers. If you choose to work with a trainer, make him or her aware of any health issues that you have prior to starting your exercise. While trainers are not physicians or health professionals that are knowledgeable about all health conditions, they should be able to recognize issues that they are untrained to deal with and encourage you to get clearance from your doctor prior to starting exercise. Again, working with a trainer is an excellent way to get started and keep motivated to continue your exercise. If you’ve made the decision to join a gym, don’t procrastinate. Act on your motivation now and both your body and mind will thank you from all the benefits you’ll receive from consistent exercise.

audiologist’s background and specialization, along with the wait time for new patients.

CHOOSE AN AUDIOLOGIST

Ensure that the professional has the proper license and reliable references to patients they have treated. Before making an appointment, consider your goals. You might want a complete hearing evaluation. Perhaps you need a fitting for a new hearing aid or a replacement. Or maybe you need more information about ear care and preventing hearing loss. You may not resolve an issue with only one appointment. You may require a follow up visits for tests, consultations and fittings, if necessary.

If you or a loved one has experienced hearing loss, you are not alone. More than 38 million Americans have some form of hearing impairment.

If you have experienced hearing loss, the relationship with your audiologist should be ongoing. Make sure you are comfortable with this person. If not, keeping looking; you will need to have a good rapport with this doctor.

Many people don’t realize they have a problem. On average, it takes seven years before someone seeks help after first noticing a problem. The good news is that hearing loss is not difficult to treat. The first step is to visit your primary care doctor. The doctor can determine if there is a physical reason for the hearing impairment, such as an infection or ear wax buildup. Your doctor will usually recommend a visit to an Audiologist, an expert at diagnosing and treating hearing loss. The primary care physician may give you the names of several Audiologists. Audiologists earn advanced degrees, either a master’s degree in Audiology or a clinical doctorate, known as a Doctor of Audiology Degree. Also, research which professional will accept your insurance.

If you are diagnosed with a hearing loss, your Audiologist may recommend hearing aids. Your Audiologist should listen to your communication needs and prescribe a hearing aid that is programmed specifically for your hearing loss. They will also counsel you on how to use your hearing aid to receive the most benefit from your device. Unfortunately, many people are ashamed of their hearing impairment; and therefore, reluctant to seek help. Visiting an audiologist can be the first step towards improve the quality of your life.

Consult your friends and family who have experienced hearing loss. Perhaps they have seen an Audiologist in your area. They may give you an honest assessment about the quality of service, level of expertise and demeanor of the staff. When you have narrowed your choices down to two or three professionals, call their offices and conduct a preliminary interview. They should inform you about the

CHOOSE AN AUTO BODY SHOP

Anyone who has experienced a car accident knows that it can be a calamitous event. Once you have dealt with any resulting health issues, you will have to contend with damage to your automobile. Whether your car has experienced significant damage or simply a scratch, it is vital to find an auto body shop that is trustworthy and dependable. Even the smallest accident can throw your schedule into disarray. A good auto body shop will ensure that your car, truck, SUV or minivan is repaired quickly, affordably and correctly. The shop you choose should be able to complete all manner of work, from a minor touchup to a fullbody repair. Your friends, family, colleagues may have recommendations. After all, auto body shops are a necessary part of life for most people. On the average vehicle owners will need collision repair services every eight years. Lacking personal recommendations, an internet search will list body shops in the area, customer reviews, and shop websites. A check of yellow page advertising may be of help as well in making a list of shops to consider.

JULY 25, 2014

you choose a shop recommended by the insurance company they will provide an estimate, repair your vehicle and bill the insurance company directly. These insurance recommended shops are usually required to provide a limited lifetime warranty as part of their agreement and their customers are routinely surveyed for customer satisfaction. Many shops that choose not to be part of insurance company direct repair programs are very high quality, stand behind their work, and are well trained and equipped. If you choose one of these shops they routinely work with the insurance company field appraisers and get agreement on final billing. They warranty their work as well. Once you have created a list of two or three shops, take your car to each shop and get an estimate. If you already have an estimate from the insurance company, present it to the shop to review. Most shops work from the insurance estimate if one has been provided. If the estimator seems knowledgeable and thorough and the office staff is friendly and professional, then keep them on your list. If they seem rushed and not interested, strike them from your list. In the reception area look for certifications. The two important industry certifications are ICAR Gold Class and ASE Blue Seal of Excellence. These certify that all of the technicians and estimators have ongoing training and have been individually tested and certified. Local awards are important as well. They show that the business endeavors to be the best and is interested in these award programs. This will be reflected in the quality of their product. Our cars, trucks, SUVs and minivans get us to work on time, back and forth to school and transport our families to and from their destinations. Choosing a great auto body shop is important for yourself and your family. The right auto body shop will have superior customer service, great prices and excellent quality of work.

If an insurance company is involved they may have a field adjuster inspect your vehicle or request that you bring it to a shop they recommend for an estimate and repairs. Either way you have the final choice of what shop will repair your vehicle. If

NORTH KITSAP’S 2014 “HOW TO” GUIDE

CHOOSE A KITCHEN REMODELING CO.

Kitchens and baths are the most popular rooms to renovate. For kitchens, no matter how much you enjoy cooking, everyone benefits from a modern, fresh, quality kitchen. The remodeling process can seem intimidating, but remodeling a kitchen can be an exciting process when you find the right kitchen remodeler. The key is to decide what changes you want and then find someone who can deliver. Start by contacting remodeling companies in your community. Make sure that they have proof of current licensure and insurance. They will likely have to visit your home to look at the room. One aspect of any project will be time. Ask each contractor about the time it will take to complete the job. All professionals should be able to finish the project in roughly the same amount of time. First visit estimates should only be used for helping to develop a budget. More specific estimates will be provided closer to the start of the project. While narrowing down your list, see if any local contractor’s have access to a showroom where you can view the different materials and styles of products you will need for your renovation. A showroom will allow you to see anything from tile, cabinetry, flooring, countertops, hardware and samples of their previous designs and projects. Make sure you check each company’s references. Speak directly to anyone who has hired them for previous work. Inquire about the quality and dependability of the workers. If anyone is unable to provide you with references or contact information, take them off your list. Most remodels will require a design. Without drawings and specifications, it is virtually impossible for remodeler’s to quote an accurate price. Remodeling companies that create their own designs can help to streamline this process. Otherwise, you and your selected contractor can find a designer that works best for you. Cost for these plans will vary upon size and scope of the project. With your design and specifications completed, you should be able to receive a precise estimate of the project. Each remodeler has a contract or agreement that they use. The main purpose of the contract is to define the project so that all parties agree to what is being done for the quoted price.

HOW TO

CHOOSE A PROPANE COMPANY

Propane can be a great alternative to using electricity, and is particularly popular in areas unreachable by natural gas. Propane has many uses in the home beyond grilling, such as space heating, fireplaces, cooking, water heating, clothes drying, backup generators, and more. When the power starts flickering, you will be glad you chose to use propane. Choosing a propane supplier may seem simple and that price should be the only factor, but it actually deserves much more consideration and research. When hiring a contractor to work on your home, are you simply going to take the lowest bid or hire the first one to show up? What if that contractor is notorious for change orders, doesn’t keep to their schedule, or worse yet is operating illegally? Propane companies are similar in nature, but with propane the safety and well-being of you and your family may be at stake. It is always important to do your homework and find out what others might be saying. The following advice will help you select a propane company that will take care of your needs and safety. Regular customers to any business often get better service. Establish a good relationship with your supplier, particularly if you heat your entire home with propane. A relationship with a propane company is a personal one, unlike that with a public utility. Propane users actually get to know the person providing their service.

JULY 25, 2014

The most important part of the selection process is to find a remodeler that communicates with you and makes you feel comfortable. In conclusion, finding the right remodeler who will stay within budget and complete the job in a timely manner will go a long way toward giving you satisfaction from start to finish. HOW TO CHOOSE KITCHEN CABINETS There are two types of cabinetry to be considered: Custom-built or Pre-manufactured, also known as Box Cabinets. Custom-built cabinets are typically a preferable choice, although they can be slightly more expensive than Pre-manufactured or “Box Cabinets.” Most custom-built cabinets are made by local professionals. You can specify wood type, color, hinges, rollers and even have special finishes applied to the cabinets. You can also make sure that you are getting the correct size. Unique sizes and shapes can ensure that the basic function of your cabinets remain intact. You can also choose between Framed and Eurostile. Framed cabinets expose portions of the cabinet box and the hinges can be seen on the outside of the doors. Eurostile cabinets have become extremely popular because of the extra amount of storage space that this style allows. The cabinet box is no longer visible and hinges are internal so they are not seen outside of the doors. Custom-built cabinets are typically built using ¾” materials. This allows for a heavier duty cabinet that creates better durability and longevity. Your remodeler can help direct you to find custom cabinet companies in the area. American Pre-built cabinets are typically mass produced in the Midwest and shipped to local builders and retailers. Some “Box Cabinets” are built overseas and the quality can be questionable. If you are on a tight budget, pre-built cabinets can be a prudent option. The main drawback is that they tend to be lighter in construction, which has a higher risk of problems later on. These types of cabinets usually have a set number of sizes. Most companies pre-build their cabinets in increments of 6”. For example, most pre-built cabinets start at 12” wide and increase to 18”, 24”, 30” and 36”. Some manufacturers build in 3” increments. This is where custom cabinets can make a real difference. For example: If your layout requires a 17” cabinet, a custom cabinet will be 17”, whereas, a manufactured cabinet would be have to be 12” or 15” with remaining space filled and storage space lost. Quality manufacturers will allow you to order special sizes, for a custom cabinet price. In the end, never be afraid to ask for references to help ensure that you are making the right decision.

If you need a propane service provider or are thinking about changing, be sure to consider the following: Company Policies- Ask about pricing structures and price breaks. Confirm that the price quoted is a regular price and not an introductory offer. Ask about additional fees including transaction fees, hazardous material fees, fuel surcharges, low usage penalties, etc., sometimes these can add upwards of 20 cents per gallon to the cost of propane. Safety- Ask about the company’s safety record and programs. Are all of their employees properly trained? Due to risks involved when tanks run out of gas, there are regulations on out of gas procedures. Ask what the companies out of gas procedures are. Or better yet, what can they do to make sure you don’t run out of gas? Programs and Payment Options- Propane bills can get expensive, especially if you’re heating your home over a cold winter. Many companies offer budget billing to spread the payments out over the entire year. Contracting and pre-pay options are also an option to help manage the risk of price spikes during peak periods. NPGA and State Propane Gas Associations - Association memberships ensure that propane companies stay up to date and informed about safety issues and compliance within the propane industry. Better Business Bureau - The BBB is an excellent source of information to find out about company history and reputation. In summary, make sure not to choose a company strictly on price, but talk to your neighbors, check references, search for reviews on the internet. Choose a supplier wisely, your safety and your family’s depends on it.
