Tacoma could spend $4M to purchase historic Old City Hall Posted online Fri., May 29 File Photo By Todd Matthews, Editor The City of Tacoma is considering whether to purchase the five-story, 122-year-old Old City Hall building in downtown Tacoma, City officials announced Thursday. If a resolution is approved by Tacoma City Council next week, the City would acquire the building, located at 625 Commerce St., from Seattle-based The Stratford Co. for $4 million (plus closing costs), address the structure's deteriorating condition, preserve its historic elements, and market the property for future development. Old City Hall was built in 1893 and originally included the offices of the mayor and city council, municipal court, public library, and public utilities. It was then renovated in 1974 for commercial office use with some ground floor retail use, and sold in 2005 with plans for conversion to residential use. Those plans did not materialize and the building has been vacant for a number of years, suffering from neglect, flooding, and other damage, according to City officials. "We've been working on this solution for almost a year, so I'm glad to see it come forward to the full Council for approval," said Tacoma Mayor Marilyn Strickland. "Gaining control of this beautiful historic icon allows us to properly preserve and market it for use in the near future." "Old City Hall, which served as the hub of our local government for 66 years, is currently in a state of disrepair, and addressing that will help enhance Tacoma's economic development efforts," added Tacoma City Manager T.C. Broadnax. Tacoma City Council is scheduled to vote on the resolution during a public meeting at 5 p.m on Tues., June 2, at Tacoma City Hall, located at 747 Market St., in downtown Tacoma. Copies of the resolution, staff memo, and area map are available online at tacomadailyindex.com. Volunteers needed for McKinley Avenue 'de-paving' project Posted online Fri., May 29 The Pierce Conservation District is seeking volunteers to participate in an eco-friendly project that aims to reduce the amount of polluted rainwater runoff in the McKinley Avenue Business District. The so-called 'de-paving' project will replace approximately 8,000 square feet of unused pavement with street trees and landscape planting. In the end, organizers expect the improvements will keep almost 200,000 gallons of polluted wa-

ter out of Puget Sound annually. A similar project was completed in March along South Tacoma Way (see "Volunteers needed for South Tacoma Way 'de-paving' project," Tacoma Daily Index, Feb. 27, 2015), as well as last year near the intersection of Division Avenue and Sprague Avenue (see "Tacoma volunteers to transform parking lot into plant paradise," Tacoma Daily Index, March 12, 2014). The de-paving project will be held on Sat., June 13, between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m., near Top

of Tacoma, located at 3529 McKinley Ave. E., in Tacoma. Volunteers will meet again on Sat., Oct. 3, between 9 a.m. and 12 p.m., to plant 11 trees and more than 600 shrubs in place of the pavement that was removed. The event is a collaboration between the City of Tacoma, Pierce Conservation District, Dometop Neighborhood Alliance, and BNBuilders. More information is available online at piercecountycd.org.

Tacoma plans 3-day Puyallup River Bridge closure for repairs Posted online Fri., May 29 The City of Tacoma will close the Puyallup River Bridge for three days in June to complete repairs to the 88-year-old structure. The bridge, which is located on Puyallup Avenue between Portland Avenue and Milwaukee Way, will be closed to vehicular traffic beginning

on Mon., June 1, through Weds., June 3, but remain open to bicycle and pedestrian traffic. Detours will be in place for motor vehicle traffic. According to City officials, the closure is necessary to repair structural damage that occurred in April when a high truck load impacted a cross brace on the bridge (see "Citing

structural damage, Tacoma closes aging Puyallup River Bridge," Tacoma Daily Index, April 13, 2015). Weight restrictions of 10 tons will still be in effect after the repairs are completed. These restrictions won't be lifted until the entire bridge is replaced.
