Seasons greetings Despite the days growing shorter and colder, a festive air begins to take hold in Kitsap County throughout the holiday season. Crowd-pleasers for page-turners Six books to gift your favorite bibliophile BY LUCIANO MARANO Kitsap News Group There are only two kinds of people in the world: People who love to read, and people who haven’t yet discovered what they love to read. So, no matter which breed of bibliophile you are shopping for, take heart in knowing that 2019 was, whatever else it may have been, a really good year for books. Be it fiction or not, short stories or epic novels, funny, sad, spooky and everything in between, there were countless pages of quality writing generated this year. I know what you’re thinking: “But, Luciano, that doesn’t help me at all! How can I possibly narrow down a year’s worth of new releases, get a book [insert intended recipient here] will like, and get out of this crowded store and away from this nonstop ear-splitting Christmas muzak as fast as possible?” Just breathe. First off, You’re actually in a store? Good for you, way to support a local book shop (I hear you on the music, though; Santa Claus is coming to town, we get it already, Michael). Second, remain calm. I’m here for you, dear reader. And like any good sherpa, I know the

way. Thus, I have concocted the following guide to save your roasting chestnuts. These are my own personally curated recommendations, complete with handy hints so as to assure you’re targeting the right audience. May your days be merry and bright … enough to read by, at least. 1. “MONSTER, SHE WROTE: THE WOMEN WHO PIONEERED HORROR AND SPECULATIVE FICTION” by Lisa Kröger and Melanie R. Anderson For people who like: History, literature, feminism, monsters, fun illustrations and surfing Wikipedia. Everyone knows Mary Shelley, and Shirley Jackson’s stock is hotter than ever. But are you familiar with Margaret “Mad Madge” Cavendish? How about Violet Paget? All these literary ladies and more are waiting to make your acquaintance in this timely and gorgeous tome that is part biography, part reader’s guide and a wholly wonderful good time. “Frankenstein” was just the beginning: dark and weird fiction wouldn’t exist without women. From gothic ghost stories to

psychological horror to science fiction, women have been primary architects of speculative literature of all sorts. And their own life stories are often as intriguing as their fiction. Everyone knows about Mary Shelley, creator of “Frankenstein,” who was rumored to keep her late husband’s heart in her desk drawer. But have you heard of Margaret “Mad Madge” Cavendish, who wrote a sci-fi epic 150 years earlier (and liked to wear topless gowns to the theater)? If you know the astounding work of Shirley Jackson, whose novel “The Haunting of Hill House” was recently reinvented as a Netflix series, then try the psychological hauntings of Violet Paget, who was openly involved in longterm romantic relationships with women in the Victorian era. 2. “IN THE WOODS” and “THE LIKENESS” by Tana French For people who like: Grisly murders, police procedurals, Gillian Flynn, mystery stories, the Alex Cross series, less-than-true crime, strong female characters, R-rated Agatha Christie, and Nordic noir. Admittedly, this one’s kind of a cheat. Not only am I selecting two books here, but obviously neither of them were published this year. But just hear me out, all right? The much-hyped BBC series “Dublin Murders” finally premiered in America on Starz on Nov. 10 based on these, the first two books in French’s insanely beloved “Dublin Murder Squad” book series, making now the perfect time to see what all the fuss is about. Actually, I’ll just go ahead and tell you what it’s about: The hands-down best mystery series of the modern era, that’s what. Each book in the series stars a different member of the same homicide detective squad, following along through the most important case of their career, each one both puzzling and disturbing in equal measure. Twenty-two years prior to the start of “Into the Woods,” 12 year-old Adam and his two best friends failed to come home after playing in the familiar woods bordering their Irish housing estate. A search is organized and the Guard finds Adam shivering, clawing the bark of a nearby tree, with blood on his shoes and slash marks on his back. He is unable to tell them what happened or where his friends are. They are never found, and his amnesia holds to

the present day. He now goes by his middle name, Rob, to avoid media attention and is a detective with the Garda Síochána’s Murder Squad, but the past comes back around with the murder of a 12-year-old girl, whose case Rob and his partner Cassie Maddox are assigned to investigate. The body was found in the same woods where Rob’s friends disappeared, at an archaeological dig site; and the coincidence is enough to make Rob more than nervous. “The Likeness” follows the efforts of detective Cassie Maddox in the wake of the events of the first book as she tries to determine the circumstances surrounding the death of Lexie Madison, a young woman who is her doppelgänger. The dead woman not only resembles Cassie but also was living under an alias the detective used in an earlier undercover assignment. A senior police officer, Frank Mackey, convinces Cassie to impersonate the dead woman to investigate her death and to discover who she really was. Both are a guaranteed ghoulish good time. 3. “RAISED IN CAPTIVITY: FICTIONAL NONFICTION” by Chuck Klosterman For people who like: the idea that all of reality is merely a computer simulation, very short stories, Franz Kafka, William S. Burroughs, David Lynch, esoteric pop culture references, taking silly things devastatingly seriously and, duh, Chuck Klosterman (he’s kind of his own thing). I am a Chuck Klosterman defender. Though not all of his books have hit the heights of his

best offerings (I especially recommend “Killing Yourself to Live,” “Fargo Rock City,” “Sex, Drugs and Cocoa Puffs” and “But What If We’re Wrong?”), this one, his latest delve into the world of fiction, is solidly enjoyable and the perfect concise read for those not given to long bouts of attentiveness. It’s a collection of extremely short stories based around the kind of surreal dorm-room— talks-at-3-a.m.-type of scenarios Klosterman is so good at. A man flying first class discovers a puma in the lavatory. A new coach of a small-town Oklahoma high school football team installs an offense comprised of only one, very special, play. A man explains to the police why he told the employee of his local bodega that his colleague looked like the lead singer of Depeche Mode, a statement that may or may not have led in some way to a violent crime. An obscure power pop band wrestles with its new-found fame when its song “Blizzard of Summer” becomes an anthem for white supremacists. A woman interviews a hitman about killing her husband but is shocked by the method he proposes From Amazon: “Fair warning: ‘Raised in Captivity’ does not slot into a smooth preexisting groove. If Saul Steinberg and Italo Calvino had adopted a child from a Romanian orphanage and raised him on Gary Larsen and Thomas Bernhard, he would still be nothing like Chuck Klosterman. They might be good company, though. Funny, wise and weird in equal measure, ‘Raised in Captivity’ bids fair to be one of the most original and exciting story collections in recent memory, a fever graph of our deepest unvoiced hopes, fears and

preoccupations.” 4. “THE LADY FROM THE BLACK LAGOON: HOLLYWOOD MONSTERS AND THE LOST LEGACY OF MILICENT PATRICK” by Mallory O’Meara For people who like: Hollywood history, feminism, hilarious memoirs, black-and-white monster movies, ladies with tattoos, poetic justice and learning where the stuff they love comes from. This one is especially timely, exploring as it does sexism and misogyny in the entertainment industry of yesteryear, and this year. Indie film producer and avowed fan of all things creepy, O’Meara uncovers the life and work of Milicent Patrick — one of Disney’s first female animators and the only woman in history to create one of Hollywood’s classic movie monsters: The Creature from the Black Lagoon. Looking to learn more about her inspirational icon, the author learns how, after Patrick’s contributions had been claimed by a jealous male colleague, and her career cut short, she soon disappeared from film history. No one even knew if she was still alive. The hunt was, as they say, so on. And the story O’Meara uncovers is of an ambitious, artistic woman ahead of her time, both thrillingly inspiration and sadly cautionary. In so doing, she sheds light on her own experiences in modern show biz, clearly showing that for as far as we’ve come, it ain’t far enough. 5. “FULL THROTTLE: STORIES” by Joe Hill For people who like: short stories, dark stories,

stories by Neil Gaiman, Kelly Link and Stephen King, the less-squishy Clive Barker stories, unapologetic but literary speculative fiction. In this, his second collection of short fiction (see also: “20th Century Ghosts,” it’s so good!) Hill offers up 13 relentless tales of supernatural suspense, including “In The Tall Grass,” one of two stories co-written with Stephen King and the basis for the new feature film from Netflix. A little door that opens to a world of fairy tale wonders becomes the blood-drenched stomping ground for a gang of hunters in “Faun.” A grief-stricken librarian climbs behind the wheel of an antique Bookmobile to deliver fresh reads to the dead in “Late Returns.” In “By the Silver Water of Lake Champlain,” now an episode on Shudder TV’s “Creepshow,” two young friends stumble on the corpse of a plesiosaur at the water’s edge, a discovery that forces them to confront the inescapable truth of their own mortality. And tension shimmers in the sweltering heat of the Nevada desert as a faceless trucker finds himself caught in a sinister dance with a tribe of motorcycle outlaws in “Throttle,” co-written with Stephen King. Replete with shock, chills, thrills and screams that never let up, including two previously unpublished stories written expressly for this volume and another appearing in print for the first time, there isn’t a dud in the bunch. 6. “THINK BLACK: A MEMOIR” by Clyde W. Ford For people who like: Nonfiction, memoirs, the truth behind the tech, familial sagas, history, progressive progress, breaking barriers, computers, coding and knowing things “they”

don’t want you to. Ford’s father, John Stanley Ford, was the first African American software engineer at IBM in 1947, hand-picked personally by firebrand tech tycoon Thomas J. Watson. The author eventually followed suit and became one of the company’s very few black employees some 20 years later. In the past, IBM’s white employees had refused to accept a black colleague and did everything in their power to humiliate, subvert, and undermine the elder Ford. And, years later, remarkably little had changed. Though Ford’s father refused to quit, and was instrumental in the development of what was arguably the first true computer, the ultimate psychological cost of his finally internalizing much of the racism he encountered at IBM created a rift between he and his modern, progressive son that was at times tumultuous and would, decades later, lead the younger man on a mission of discovery that took him to dark places both personal and global. The elder Ford, who passed away about 20 years ago, could not have known that his hiring was meant to distract from IBM’s dubious business practices, including its involvement in the Holocaust, eugenics, and apartheid, but it quickly became a central facet of his son’s new book — and one a surprisingly large number of readers were apparently unaware of. The truth about that and more can be found in Ford’s book, which was called “powerful” and “thought-provoking” by Publisher’s Weekly.

Since retiring in 2011, Andersen said he’s had more time in the last few years to devote toward making the show as good as it can be. “We’ve had more time to work on the show and make it better behind the scenes so we’re more efficient and (have) better advertising that’s helped get the word out to a lot of potential customers.” The event tries to filter in new exhibitors each year in order to offer the community a wide variety of crafts to choose from. “The quality has improved over the years,” he said. “The attendance has been unbelievable, it’s gotten bigger and better every year. That helps make it a successful show.”

Holiday Gift & Food Fair BY TYLER SHUEY Kitsap News Group The Holiday Gift & Food Fair has been a staple in Kitsap County for the past 33 years, offering holiday enthusiasts an opportunity to add some unique character to their festive collections, or for those simply looking to help contribute to a few worthy local causes. The 33rd Holiday Gift & Food Fair will be held once again the weekend before Thanksgiving at the Kitsap Sun Pavilion. According to organizer Dave Andersen, the Gift & Food Fair is the largest and best-handcrafted show on the peninsula. Nearly 180 booths will be set up for artists and food exhibitors to showcase their handcrafted and homemade products. Items for sale include artisanal woodworkings, paintings, framed photographs, decorative Christmas items, pottery, handmade jewelry, clothing, birdhouses, handbags, children’s items and much more. Admission is good for all three days, starting Friday, Nov. 22 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Saturday, Nov. 23 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and

Sunday, Nov. 24 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The event also hosts a little holiday charity by collecting food for several local food banks, and the Salvation Army. Local Marines will also be onsite collecting toys for Toys for Tots. Andersen estimated that the event gathered some four or five pickup-truck-loads worth of food each year. Andersen is also credited with starting this tradition at its inauguration, 33 years ago. Andersen noted that the show also held the honor of being the first such show held at the Kitsap Sun Pavilion all those years ago. “It’s kind of just grown year after year since then, where it’s gotten better Northwest professional artists to be exhibitors,” Anderson said. “We go to a lot of shows looking for unique craft items and that helped us eventually get better and better exhibitors in the show for people to attend in this area.”

Featured this year will be painter Jack Babcock, who has spent over 30 years crafting his style portraying realistic scenes of Mt. Ranier, barns and landscapes throughout the Cascade region. Babcock has been involved in galleries throughout the area and was recently named a featured artist at the Clymer Museum of Art in Ellensburg. Babcock uses a limited color palette in his paintings, using only three or four colors. Festive patrons at this year’s fair will be no doubt take interest in his painted glass ornaments, which he has been crafting since 1982. Babcock estimates he’s painted over 3,000 glass ornaments. Also featured at the 2019 Gift & Food Fair will be Marshall Mahler. Mahler has been a professional photographer for more than 20 years, spending his first nine years as a portrait photographer before transitioning to outdoor and nature photography. “Traveling and exploring nature to find and capture great photos of unique places and wildlife is a challenging, but enjoyable endeavor,” Mahler said. The origin of Wreaths Across America begins in the early 1990s, when the Worcester Wreath Company of Harrington, Maine, found it had a surplus of wreaths following the holiday season. The owner of the company, Morrill Worcester, remembering a boyhood trip to Arlington National Cemetary worked with his state senator, Olympia Snowe to have the wreaths placed at a section of the cemetery that received fewer and fewer visitors every year.

By 2014 over 700,000 wreaths had been laid across the country, including ceremonies at Pearl Harbor, Bunker Hill, Valley Forge, and One World Trade Center.

The Linda he is referring too is Linda Schwind, the Poulsbo Municipal Cemetary Coordinator.

This went on quietly for 12 years until a photo of the wreath adorned gravestones went viral in 2005, and the project began to receive national attention with thousands of requests from people wanting to help with placing wreaths in Arlington and to replicate the project at their own cemeteries. The company was unable to send thousands of wreaths to each state but chose to send seven wreaths, representing each branch of the military, including ones for those that were prisoners of war or missing in action. In 2006 a simultaneous wreath-laying ceremony was held in 150 locations around the country. In 2007 the Worcester family formed Wreaths Across America, a nonprofit dedicated to extending and expanding

On Saturday, Dec. 14 Poulsbo Municipal Cemetery will join the thousands of other cemeteries, in a wreath-laying ceremony, beginning at noon. “Remember the fallen, honor those who serve and teach our children the value of freedom,” reads the Poulsbo group’s sponsor page. Thus far the group has 120 wreaths sponsored with 80 left to go. Scott Coykendall, a member of Team Rubicon: a group of veterans and first responders that respond to natural disasters around the country, put out a plea on the North Kitsap Community Facebook page to get more folks and groups to sponsor wreaths to help the Poulsbo group reach its goal and make this first year a success. Coykendall noted that Wreaths Across America had a presence at cemeteries, specifically in Bremerton and Port Orchard, but there hasdn’t been much on the north end of Kitsap.

Schwind said Poulsbo’s involvement in Wreaths Across America came from her previous participation in the program elsewhere as well as prompting from the group Friends of the Poulsbo Municipal Cemetery who noticed that the cemetery was kind of neglected and felt it needed some TLC. “I thought what the heck? Let’s see if we can’t get this going here in Poulsbo for our little cemetery,” Schwind said. The Poulsbo Municipal Cemetery is the final resting place for a little over 120 veterans. One the day of the laying, volunteers will come and lay the wreaths that have been sponsored over the graves and recite the name of the fallen. The volunteers range from family members of the fallen to members of the local Boy Scout Troop, to representatives of the Poulsbo Noon Lions Club, American Legion, and VFW. Hood Canal Brewery in Kingston currently has its Southpoint Porter on tap and available in 22-ounce bottles. This 5.5 percent alcohol by volume (ABV) brew will give your tastebuds the feeling of sipping coffee with your preferred dessert with its roasted nut and coffee scents with a creamy smooth taste.

the end of November. On tap now is “Hog Thai’d” a 9.5 percent Belgian style beer that was a crowd favorite three years ago but hasn’t been made since due to the complexity of the recipe. This beer has a smokey coconut flavor that adds the spice from the curry leaves. It was wellreceived at Seattle’s Great Pumpkin Beer Festival in October. Next on tap is the “Borghild Imperial Porter,” a 9.8 percent ABV beer made with large amounts of oats and rye to create a balance of spicy and creamy flavors. This beer is named for Slippery Pig owner, Dave Lambert’s father-in-law’s mother, whose name Borghild, literally translates to “fortified for battle.” We don’t know if this beer will have you fortified for battle, but it will surely have you fortified for a long winter night. Finally, the pig will be releasing a super secretive collaboration at the end of November. The only thing we know about it is that it’s 11.5 percent ABV and will be available for limited release.

Finally, Western Red Brewing will ring in the holiday season with a new brew, a 10.5 percent ABV Baltic porter made with roasted chocolate and aged vanilla to bring out that sweet holiday taste. WRB will also be bringing back its “Triple Buck IPA.” This 10 percent ABV, citrusy drink is made from Columbus and Motueka hops, which gives it a lime aroma. Finally, you won’t have to travel all the way to Scotland for this Scotch brew. “Daddy Saw Bucks” is a wee heavy Scotch ale collaboration with Cash Brewing out of Silverdale. Though this holiday season it comes with an additional ingredient, maple syrup and it’s aged in Scotch oak barrels. Just like Slippery Pig, these brews at Western Red and Valhöll are only available on tap at their Poulsbo locations, but gift cards and growler fills could turn these seasonal beers into fine holiday gift for your special cicerone.

The annual Bainbridge Island Turkey Trot — a fundraiser for Helpline House — returns to Battle Point Park (11299 Arrow Point Drive NE) for its 10th anniversary on Thursday, Nov. 28. The Turkey Trot has become one of Bainbridge Island’s most anticipated holiday traditions. Bainbridge Working Studios is an independent, grassroots group of professional artists who live on Bainbridge and make their living through their art. The Winter Show features four BIWS participating studios. All studio artists are Bainbridge Island residents, and guest artists for the winter show are Island artists as well. ‘MATILDA THE MUSICAL’

Bainbridge Performing Arts presents Roald Dahl’s “Matilda The Musical” for its holiday show. It’s a magical story of an extraordinary girl who, armed with a vivid imagination and a sharp mind, dares to take a stand and change her own destiny and is based on Dahl’s beloved book. NOON YEAR’S EVE

Get a head start on your New Year’s Eve celebration and ring in 2020 with the whole family at Kids Discovery Museum on Noon Year’s Eve, Dec. 31. MOCHI TSUKI

The annual Mochi Tsuki festival returns to Woodward Middle School for the second year in a row. It’s planned for 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 4. For over a millennium, making and eating the sweet rich treat “mochi” has been a celebrated New Year’s tradition in Japan, with generations of families and communities coming together to wish good health and prosperity for the new year. Each year, the Bainbridge Island Japanese American Community brings this celebration to the island and invites everyone, young and old, to bundle up against the crisp winter air and enjoy the tradition of mochi tsuki (moe-chee sue-key). Mochi making involves a centuries-old method of first steaming the sweet rice over an open fire, then placing the cooked rice into a warm stone or concrete bowl called an usu, then hit repeatedly with large wooden mallets. ‘BYE BYE BIRDIE’

Ovation! will present “Bye Bye Birdie” as its winter holiday show from Jan. 3 through Jan. 12. The show will be presented with orchestra at Bainbridge Performing Arts. TUBA CHRISTMAS Dec. 14 From 3 to 4 p.m. this free family event in Poulsbo’s Muriel Iverson Williams Waterfront Park, will feature local tuba, sousaphone, euphonium, serpent and ophicleide players of all ages and backgrounds playing traditional Christmas Carols.
