‘TIS THE SEASON
Season’s greetings Despite the days growing shorter and colder, a festive air begins to take hold in Kitsap County throughout the holiday season. Each year Kitsap residents embody the spirit of giving by donating to local fundraisers, food charities and other charitable organizations, groups and causes, in order to bring some holiday cheer to those who, were it not for their kindness, might not be able to celebrate this special time of year. The holidays are also a time for community to come together through free events and festivities. It is also a time for Kitsap’s residents to support local business by visiting the many specialty shops all around the county as they search for that perfect gift for a loved one.
In order to help you, the reader, in your holiday preparations, shopping, or just getting into the festive spirit, we here at Sound Publishing welcome you to 2019’s Tis the Season Holiday Guide. Within the pages of this special publication you will find useful holiday recommendations from Central Kitsap Reporter and Port Orchard Independent staffers. Additionally, you can find a list of holiday events coming up throughout Central and South Kitsap as well. So whether you’re looking for a preview of the upcoming Holiday Gift and Food Fair by the Central Kitsap Reporter’s Tyler Shuey, or if you’re looking for tips on where to find that perfect holiday gift from the Port Orchard Independent’s Bob Smith, Tis the Season has you covered. We hope you enjoy and find this special publication to be helpful. From everyone here at Sound Publishing, we wish you a safe and happy holiday season.

NOVEMBER 22, 2019 Since retiring in 2011, Andersen said he’s had more time in the last few years to devote toward making the show as good as it can be. “We’ve had more time to work on the show and make it better behind the scenes so we’re more efficient and (have) better advertising that’s helped get the word out to a lot of potential customers.” The event tries to filter in new exhibitors each year in order to offer the community a wide variety of crafts to choose from. “The quality has improved over the years,” he said. “The attendance has been unbelievable, it’s gotten bigger and better every year. That helps make it a successful show.” Featured this year will be painter Jack Babcock, who has spent over 30 years crafting his style portraying realistic scenes of Mt. Ranier, barns and landscapes throughout the Cascade region. Babcock has been involved in galleries throughout the area and was recently named a featured artist at the Clymer Museum of Art in Ellensburg. Babcock uses a limited color palette in his paintings, using only three or four colors. Festive patrons at this year’s fair will be no doubt take interest in his painted glass ornaments, which he has been crafting since 1982. Babcock estimates he’s painted over 3,000 glass ornaments.
Holiday Gift & Food Fair BY TYLER SHUEY Kitsap News Group
The Holiday Gift & Food Fair has been a staple in Kitsap County for the past 33 years, offering holiday enthusiasts an opportunity to add some unique character to their festive collections, or for those simply looking to help contribute to a few worthy local causes. The 33rd Holiday Gift & Food Fair will be held once again the weekend before Thanksgiving at the Kitsap Sun Pavilion. According to organizer Dave Andersen, the Gift & Food Fair is the largest and best-handcrafted show on the peninsula. Nearly 180 booths will be set up for artists and food exhibitors to showcase their handcrafted and homemade products. Items for sale include artisanal woodworkings, paintings, framed photographs, decorative Christmas
items, pottery, handmade jewelry, clothing, birdhouses, handbags, children’s items and much more. Admission is good for all three days, starting Friday, Nov. 22 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Saturday, Nov. 23 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Sunday, Nov. 24 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The event also hosts a little holiday charity by collecting food for several local food banks, and the Salvation Army. Local Marines will also be onsite collecting toys for Toys for Tots. Andersen estimated that the event gathered some four or five pickup-truckloads worth of food each year. Andersen is also credited with starting this tradition at its inauguration, 33
years ago. Andersen noted that the show also held the honor of being the first such show held at the Kitsap Sun Pavilion all those years ago. “It’s kind of just grown year after year since then, where it’s gotten better Northwest professional artists to be exhibitors,” Anderson said. “We go to a lot of shows looking for unique craft items and that helped us eventually get better and better exhibitors in the show for people to attend in this area.”
Also featured at the 2019 Gift & Food Fair will be Marshall Mahler. Mahler has been a professional photographer for more than 20 years, spending his first nine years as a portrait photographer before transitioning to outdoor and nature photography. “Traveling and exploring nature to find and capture great photos of unique places and wildlife is a challenging, but enjoyable endeavor,” Mahler said. Visit holidaygiftfair.com for more information on this year’s show.

‘TIS THE SEASON While we have yet to see the first snow of the season, the chill of the “Wonderland Winter Lager” will have you fully ready for a stormy stroll.
Frightful weather is no match for Wonderland. A blend of five different malts lends a deep rich color & mild roast character refined by five weeks of lagering at near-freezing temperatures. Made from German Herbrucker, Nugget and Saaz hops, this 7 percent ABV brew is available now on tap and in 22-ounce bottles. Ringing in the holiday season with a medley fit for the classic ballet is the “Nutcracker Spiced Ale” which will have a limited 22-ounce bottle and draft release on Nov. 21. This small-batch brew is full of dark roasted malt, fruit, and spice, and has been a special tradition at Silver City since 2005. Its distinctive Belgian yeast adds a spicy character, as do additions of brown sugar, ginger root, and mandarin peel. This brew is sure to send the lords a-leaping at 10 percent ABV. In Poulsbo, the Slippery Pig Brewery has a host of seasonal brews coming out this winter, including a super-secret collaboration due out at the end of November. On tap now is “Hog Thai’d” a 9.5 percent Belgian style beer that was a crowd favorite three years ago but hasn’t been made since due to the complexity of the recipe. This beer has a smokey coconut flavor that adds the spice from the curry leaves. It was well-received at Seattle’s Great Pumpkin Beer Festival in October.
Beers for Holiday Cheers! BY KEN PARK Kitsap News Group Kitsap County is fortunate to have a host of breweries that put out special seasonal brews to enjoy throughout the holidays. Hood Canal Brewery in Kingston currently has its Southpoint Porter on tap and available in 22-ounce bottles. This 5.5 percent alcohol by volume (ABV) brew will give your tastebuds the feeling of sipping coffee with your preferred dessert with its roasted nut and coffee scents with a creamy smooth taste. Coming soon is the Lilliwaup Doppelbock a 10 percent ABV semi-sweet, very drinkable lager with hints of caramel. Rainy Daze in Poulsbo has two holiday specials on tap. The barrel-aged “Santa’s Tea Bag” is a winter warmer ringing in at 10.2 percent ABV, made with molasses, maple syrup, orange zest and a special blend of holiday tea and has been aged in bourbon barrels for just over a year. If you’re looking for something lighter in alcohol but still full of holiday-inspired flavor, Rainy Daze also has its “Frosty Chairlift” winter ale at 6.9 percent ABV. Made from northern brewer, Chinook and Golding hops, this brew is a winter
delight, sure to warm up the hop drinker in your life. Silver City Brewery in Bremerton boasts four holiday specials. The “Old Scrooge Christmas Ale,” which is now available on tap and in 22-ounce bottles has intriguing notes of apple, cherry and apricot, which abound from the long boil time, cool fermentation and extended aging, resulting in a dark, malty 8.5 percent ABV ale. Celebrate this year’s release and save some for the next, as this beer, made from Columbus and Willamette hops matures wonderfully when cellared. Next up is the Bourbon Barrel aged “Old Scrooge” which had a limited bottle release on Halloween. It boasts a smooth mellowing kiss of bourbon followed by the familiar taste of Old Scrooge. A long slumber in single-use Kentucky Bourbon barrels marries fruity esters and rich malt body with cherry, wood, and vanilla. This brew is also made from Columbus and Willamette hops and has an ABV of 9.6 percent and is available in 500-milliliter bottles.
Next on tap is the “Borghild Imperial Porter,” a 9.8 percent ABV beer made with large amounts of oats and rye to create a balance of spicy and creamy flavors. This beer is named for Slippery Pig owner, Dave Lambert’s father-in-law’s mother, whose name Borghild, literally translates to “fortified for battle.” We don’t know if this beer will have you fortified for battle, but it will surely have you fortified for a long winter night. Finally, the pig will be releasing a super secretive collaboration at the end of November. The only thing we know about it is that it’s 11.5 percent ABV and will be available for limited release. Valhöll Brewing, also in Poulsbo, currently has its 5 percent ABV “American Wheat Blood Orange IPA” on tap for the merry beer drinker. While on Nov. 29 as part of its Valhölliday Celebration, it will release its Valhölliday Chocolate Milk stout, a drink worthy of Santa Claus himself at 7 percent ABV. Finally, Western Red Brewing will ring in the holiday season with a new brew, a 10.5 percent ABV Baltic porter made with roasted chocolate and aged vanilla to bring out that sweet holiday taste. WRB will also be bringing back its “Triple Buck IPA.” This 10 percent ABV, citrusy drink is made from Columbus and Motueka hops, which gives it a lime aroma. Finally, you won’t have to travel all the way to Scotland for this Scotch brew. “Daddy Saw Bucks” is a wee heavy Scotch ale collaboration with Cash Brewing out of Silverdale. Though this holiday season it comes with an additional ingredient, maple syrup and it’s aged in Scotch oak barrels. Just like Slippery Pig, these brews at Western Red and Valhöll are only available on tap at their Poulsbo locations, but gift cards and growler fills could turn these seasonal beers into fine holiday gift for your special cicerone.

Port Orchard’s Bay Street places an emphasis on ‘unique’ BY BOB SMITH Kitsap News Group
Christmas shopping these days is getting easier and easier to do. It’s surely easy enough to make a mad dash to the local big-box store or shop for presents online in order to check off your Christmas list. But finding just the right present — something those stores oftentimes come up short on — continues to bedevil lots of shoppers. These days, it seems the most appreciated gift is one that’s unique and often a one-of-a-kind quirky treasure. That’s where Bay Street merchants in Port Orchard offer a leg up on the countless Black Friday retailers who peddle “more of the same” to holiday shoppers. Christine Stansbery of the Port Orchard Bay Street Association, a collection of small retail businesses operating downtown, assures shoppers they will be able find “unique” and “one of a kind” items with little difficulty. She said visitors to Bay Street will be able to “shop small, shop local” on Small Business Saturday on Saturday, Nov. 30. “You will find that perfect gift for your hard-to-shop-for friends and family members,” Stansbery said. The POBSA spokeswoman said Port Orchard will be decked out for the holidays leading up to the town’s annual Festival of Chimes & Lights on Saturday, Dec. 7. The highlight of that festive day is the lighting of the community’s Christmas tree at City Hall and the arrival of Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus.
SHOP ‘TIL YOU DROP And then there’s the shopping. Stansbery shared with us

13 items and amenities that help make it a worthwhile holiday experience for families. Wreaths, garlands, and tree stands are among the items available. Staff also conduct a tree flocking operation for those who want that snowy look added to their tree. Free hot apple cider awaits all visitors inside Noble House, which also has a warm wood stove inside as well. On the weekends, Santa pays visits to the farm for photos with families and wagon rides around the farm. “It’s kind of become a tradition for so many families,” Billick said. “We try to keep adding more stuff that’s free for the family just to make it a long-lasting family tradition. It’s fun, we enjoy it.” Billick mentioned one particular family who has been coming to the farm since it opened in 1960; four generations’ worth. “We’ve got a number of families like that where two or three generations have been coming to the farm,” he said. “In the last 10 years, we’ve actually doubled our sales because of that. We have done absolutely no advertising for the last five years, it’s strictly word of mouth.”
Finding that perfect tree Huberts Tree Farm: family tradition since 1960 BY TYLER SHUEY Kitsap News Group The holiday season often brings various holiday traditions for local families. For many Kitsap County locals, the holidays are marked by taking a trip down to Huberts Christmas Tree farm along Seabeck Highway, in search of the perfect Christmas tree. The farm opened in 1960 with the Huberts family owning the property and running the business. When the Huberts decided to retire 10 years ago, they didn’t have anybody in the family to pass it down to, so they turned to an employee and close friend in an effort to pass on the farm. Randy Billick along with his family, have owned and operated Huberts Christmas Trees for the past decade. Billick has worked on the farm in some capacity for about 47 years, starting as a young kid. The 125-acre property has about 75 to 80 acres devoted solely to various kinds of Christmas trees. Billick stated that the farm has close to 100,000 planted trees. With a farm of this size, it requires maintenance most of the year so that the Christmas trees are in the best possible condition by the time the holidays roll around.
According to Billick, the process starts in January with the cleaning of the fields and planting of trees, followed by fertilizing and weed control in the Spring. The Summer months are devoted to shearing and pruning the trees before field cleanup and preparation for the opening of the farm for sales. “During the Summer we have anywhere from four to six [employees],” Billick said of the off-season work. “When we get to the sales season it’s about 12 to 15 of us on the weekends to take care of sales.” On average, Billick estimated he sells somewhere between 4,500 and 5,000 . The farm sells 13 different kinds of Christmas trees, with the Noble fir being the most popular among buyers. Other varieties of trees include Nordmann fir, grand fir, Douglas fir, Norway spruce, blue spruce, white pine, and alpine fir. “We’ve probably got one of the largest varieties of trees around the region,” Billick said. Although Christmas trees are by far the biggest appeal of the farm, Huberts Christmas Trees also provides other
This year, the farm will be collecting food donations for the Central Kitsap Food Bank, which can be dropped off at the farm from Nov. 29 to Dec. 15 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Toys for Tots will also be collected at the farm. Currently, much of the Billick family are helping out with the operation of the farm, as their time will soon come to take over. According to Billick, his son and grandson are the two ideal candidates to succeed his tenure as head of the farm. Billick’s son has been around the business since he was just a toddler. “They’re probably the ones who are most interested,” he said. “My hopes are that my grandson will be about 18 at the time that I’m thinking of being just a helper and not the owner and manager anymore.” “We’ve got a lot of family that’s interested, it’s just finding the ones that want to do all the tree work through the year or the ones that just want to come out during the Christmas season on the weekends and be involved in sales. We’re hoping to keep it going for many years.” Huberts Christmas Trees will have an early weekend opening Saturday, Nov. 23 from noon to 4 p.m., followed by the regularly scheduled opening from Nov. 29 to Dec. 15.
