he holidays are a time for good cheer, spending time with family and friends and doing fun things, no matter what community you are in. Vashon-Maury Island is no exception. There’s Winterfest, the Vashon-Maury Island Chamber of Commerce’s annual event that includes a parade and tree lighting with Santa; the Vashon Island Visual Artists’ Holiday Studio Tour; a performance of the holiday favorite “The Nutcracker” at the Vashon Center for the Arts — and so much more. If you don’t have those events on your list of things to do this holiday season, we recommend you put them down. Meanwhile, here’s the Vashon-Maury Island Beachcomber’s Holiday Gift Guide. It’s our annual insert with our Thanksgiving newspaper edition, aimed to get you excited about the holidays. Inside, you’ll find information about fun activities for the whole family; what local businesses have in store that you can’t find at the big box stores; a tasty carrot soup recipe from islander Tom Conway (try the dish for Tom — we hear it’s lip-smacking) and Canadian Christmas memories from our very own reporter, Kate Dowling. Thank you for reading The Beachcomber and its special sections throughout the year. We wish you all the very best this holiday season! Enjoy the rest of 2019 and have a happy 2020. Humorous holiday memories
Beachcomber reporter recalls Canadian Christmases BY KATE DOWLING THE BEACHCOMBER
I sat at the kids’ table until I was 31 and about to have my first child. That’s because our family was so big. It was so big in fact, that we had three Christmases — and sometimes four. We would spend Christmas Eve day at my cousins farm, making snow angels, eating gingerbread and drinking punch — spiked for the adults. Decorations made by the kids from past years would adorn the house (my favorites were from grade three). Next stop: My Oma and Opa’s, where we would celebrate a traditional German Christmas Eve, complete with marzipan, lebkuchen and the adventskranz, cozy around the fire. Christmas morning back in our own house, my brother and I would sneak down the stairs and open our stockings, which we were allowed to do before our mum and dad awoke. Once my parents were awake, we would start to dig under the tinsel-covered tree for our gifts from Santa. Then it was time to get ready for my aunt
Pat’s house. She would host Christmas dinner for the largest of my family, my mum’s side, with her unusual takes on traditional Christmas fare. Packed up in the car, heading to her house with my younger brother and I bundled in the back seat, my dad would glance in the rear view mirror and ask us if we wanted to stop at McDonald’s before Aunt Pat’s “crazy dinner.” My mum would give him a playful swat and roll her eyes. At the end of the night, sleepy and full, we would head home to bed. But Christmas was not yet over. In Canada, we celebrate Boxing Day, the day after Christmas. We celebrated with my dad’s family on Boxing Day, complete with Christmas crackers and silly paper hats. There were many Christmases for our sprawling family driving from one house to the next, sometimes in the white-out conditions of a winter in Ontario. It was always a busy season of love and a big family. My first Christmas in the U.S. when I was unable to travel home, with only one day off over Christmas, felt so plain. It was just me, my husband, our little tree with a few little gifts and one day off — no marzipan, no
homemade decorations from grade three, no Christmas crackers, no odd dessert like Bloody Mary granita at my Aunt Pat’s. Oh, how I missed the kids’ table!
When my kids were born, I tried my bestto recreate my favorite Christmas traditions, with homemade tree decorations and stockings only before my husband and I awoke. But there is no need for a kids table and one day of Christmas to celebrate. It just doesn’t feel the same as with my great big Canadian family. When I moved to Vashon Island, the streets were adorned with candy canes and garland, arts performances and sing-a-longs. It gets you into a cozy atmosphere the entire month of December — and it really does feel like Christmas for more than just a day.
Last year, I was happy to host my first Christmas with my big Canadian family, complete with odd menu items and Boxing Day Christmas crackers. My house was full of cheer and the memories of my many Christmases as I grew up in Canada. I even took a bonus day off on Boxing Day to spend at the kid’s table.

A look Vashon holiday shows, sales BY ELIZABETH SHEPHERD THE BEACHCOMBER
Vashon stages will light up with holiday-themed performances in December, including such treats as an all-star fundraising concert for local nonprofits, the Vashon Chorale’s annual concert of holiday music and a heartwarming Drama Dock show. And of course, it wouldn’t be December without The Nutcracker, danced by the talented students of Vashon Center for Dance. Get your tickets now for the following shows, but save time to shop for gifts at local art spots as well — special exhibits and holiday sales will focus on original arts and crafts suitable for every budget. The 7th annual Will Sing for Vashon — a showcase where dozens of island music acts take the stage to raise money for all Vashon nonprofits — will take place at 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 6, at Open Space for Arts & Community. Produced by Vashon Events, the evening has a freewheeling but worthy format, with a focus on fundraising. At the start of the evening, audience members are provided with a list and envelope that includes all island nonprofits. During the show, when the holiday music moves them, audience members are asked to donate to the local nonprofits of their choice by slipping cash, checks, or credit card information into the envelope. All payments are made to Vashon Events (which is also a nonprofit), which then distributes the money. Last year, the concert raised $4,800 for local organiza-
tions, with The Dove Project receiving the most donations, at $700. The concert has a cover charge of $10 for advance tickets and $15 at the door — this money helps pay for the costs of the event. Youth ages 18 and younger are admitted free. More information and tickets, visit https://www.vashonevents.org/will-singfor-vashon-nonprofits-event. Vashon Center for the Arts and Broadway Nation Live will present “White Christmas – The Story Behind America’s Most Popular Song,” at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 6, at Vashon Center for the Arts. David Armstrong, Artistic Director Emeritus of The 5th Avenue Theatre, will take audiences inside the creation of the bestselling and most recorded song of all time as he tells the story of how a destitute, illiterate, Russian-Jewish immigrant named Irving Berlin became America’s Composer Laureate and invented an entirely new category of song. The evening will also feature special guest Albert Evans, and musical performances by 5th Avenue Theatre stars Cayman Ilika (Kiss Me Kate, Jaques Brel) and Eric Ankrim (How To Succeed, First Date), singing holiday hits from the Great American Songbook. Tickets to the show are $35 to $20; buy them in advance at vashoncenterforthearts.org. Vashon Island Chorale will raise their voices to welcome in the holiday season with “Shepherds and Stars,” a concert scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7, and 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 8, at Vashon

Vashon’s 2019 Holiday Guide
Shop Vashon for what you need this holiday season BY PAUL ROWLEY
T
THE BEACHCOMBER
here are a lot of ways to make your giving count during the holidays. But finding the right gift for everyone on your list can be a tall order. Fortunately, said Sue Shotridge, who owns Raven’s Nest Gallery in town on Vashon Highway, you can do it on your own time in her shop. The art gallery and gift shop’s collection of oneof-a-kind products include prints, carvings, jewelry and keychains; acrylic and drum ornaments; magnets and decals; art cards, travel tumblers, blanket throws and more designed by Tlingit master carver and artist Israel Shotridge. For the holidays, the Nest will be open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. from Monday to Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday. As the weeks before

The Country Store & Farm has an abundance of apparel perfect for rainy Pacific Northwest weather. the holidays turn into days, Shotridge said, hours will be extended so everyone has a chance to browse their expansive and handcrafted inventory. “Whenever the lights are on in the evenings, visitors are welcome to come in,” she said, adding that for those with limited time and busy schedules, the Shotridge Collection — celebrating its
30th anniversary next year — is available online, and shipping is free. Visit shotridgenativeamericanart.com for more. Just up the road at the Vashon Bookshop, owner Nancy Katica has singled out titles she thinks will win over everyone this year. She expects cookbooks to sell in anticipation of holiday meals and for the island’s naturalists
to snap up paperbacks such as “Buzz: The Nature and Necessity of Bees,” by Thor Hanson. Music lovers are sure to be swept away by Joni Mitchell’s “Morning Glory on the Vine: Early Songs and Drawings,” newly released and featuring work from the artist’s “Blue” period. Katica added that Elton John’s first and only autobiography, “Me,” is likely to shine on any shelf. Brandy Colbert’s children’s book “Little & Lion” explores the triumphs and travails of a blended family as they seek to overcome mental illness and struggles with identity. Likewise, Lynne Kelly’s “Songs for a Whale,” — a staff favorite — depicts the everyday experiences of life and loneliness that Katica said will resonate with young audiences. Katica said that fiction and nonfiction stories with feminist themes about self-empowerment have remained especially popular with
readers. Copies of “My Own Words,” the autobiography of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg, are expected to keep selling throughout the season, as is John Larison’s feminist western “Whiskey When We’re Dry,” whose heroine reinvents herself on a quest to find her outlaw brother and prove to those who underestimate her that she is a force to be reckoned with. Island author Shauna Ahern’s “Enough: Notes From a Woman Who Has Finally Found It,” a collection of fierce essays about self-esteem and living your truth, continues to find its way into many homes on Vashon and elsewhere alike. “Everything changes at Christmas time, what people are looking for and buying,” Katica said. The Vashon Bookshop is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. from Monday to Saturday and from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. Across the street next to

Vashon’s 2019 Holiday Guide Sporty’s, at Island Paperchase, Alice Larson creates and curates everything from colorful folded paper flowers and larger mobiles to massive, vibrant pieces consisting of more than 1,000 paper cranes taking flight on canvas. For any party, consider taking your outfit to new heights with Larson’s handmade origami jewelry such as necklaces and earrings. For your home, string paper crane garland up the stair banister or around your tree. “It’s such an incredible art form,” said Larson, who has had her storefront on Vashon Highway for three years. “The thing about this gallery that I love is when people walk in and smile.” Seahawks fans are welcome and will find artworks that are perfect for game day, whether on the wall or to wear. Larson is something of a fan herself. “No doubt about that. I close for Seahawk games,” she said. Down the road, next to the Valley Center Park & Ride, the Country Store & Farm remains a staple of the island’s agricultural community with everything one might need for garden beds and livestock. But Lindsay Foster said that shoppers will find a little bit of everything inside, from apparel

nity and less consumptive.” That means promoting togetherness over materialism, thinking of ways to make more memories over ways to collect more stuff, though there are plenty of unique toys, crafts, brands and home goods that will delight everyone on your list. Don’t forget to ask about shipping. The Country Store also offers a number of classes and events perfect
for picking up a new craft or planting technique. Visit countrystoreandfarm.com online for more information. The Country Store & Farm is open from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. from Monday through Saturday and from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. Meanwhile, in sleepy Burton alongside Quartermaster Harbor, a business in the Masonic Lodge has been turning heads since it first expanded from an online retailer to the storefront on Vashon Highway in 2014. Kevin Strel, owner of Spiceberry, said that specialty cookware and apparel — from textiles such as tablecloths, tote bags and colorful handmade Indian quilts, to kitchen items, including Japanese and Korean specialty ceramic and stone cookware — earn high praise for their quality and beauty. “There are a lot of cooks on the island, a lot of people who like to experiment with cooking,” he said. “That’s also our online niche — nobody really sells these kinds of things, so it’s really unique.” Spiceberry is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. from Thursday to Monday. On Tuesday and Wednesday, the store is open by chance.

Warming up with Roasted Carrot Soup BY TOM CONWAY This time of year, I’m shivering at regular intervals in a century-old farmhouse where warmth is more of a figurative rather than literal state. After donning double socks and several layers of anything wool, I am content to share my space with drafts, chills and the occasional seen breath. My bulldog, Buddy, resembles a soft taco, rolled up in a blanket on the sofa with a wee bit of muzzle poking out for fresh air. When I have a fire going, Buddy ventures out of his flannel flauta and parks it on the hearth.
This kind of cold for me — a self-professed winter wimp — calls for rib-sticking, thaw-me-out soup. Here’s my recipe for such a mishmash: A carrot soup that serves up with a sunny disposition and a few much-needed BTUs for the body and soul. It’s a winter staple around my house, beloved by omni-
vores, vegans and vegetarians alike. And this time of year, Vashon farmstands are well stocked with carrots and onions. Ingredients • 2lb carrots (chunky cut) • 2 onions (quartered) • 2 tablespoons olive oil • 2 teaspoons ginger • 4 vegetable stock • 1 can coconut milk • 1 orange (zest and juice) Directions Step 1: Place carrots

A Christmas Miracle!
Island children who want to send Santa or Mrs. Claus a letter are invited to drop them off at The Vashon Bookshop. Santa and Mrs. Claus like to respond to every letter they receive, so kids need to make sure to include their full name and address. To hear back from Santa by Christmas, letters should be dropped off by December 20th.
