When I reflect on this past year at the chamber, the word that comes to mind is FORWARD. We saw some significant change in 2018 as Shelli Robb-Kahler, who served for many years as our chamber director, received an opportunity to return to her roots in banking. Going through an in-depth hiring process, the Executive Committee selected Anji Scalf to lead us through the remainder of the year and forward to the future.

I personally would like to thank Melanie and Kelsey Sands for holding the fort down through the uncertain times and doing a great job.

When I think about forward, I think about some of the great leg work that has been done. We will soon be rolling out new chamber membership packages that have been a few years in the making. I am excited about the potential these packages hold for our membership.

We also formed a few ad-hoc committees to further forward our mission statement.

This past year we reinstated the Howard Wood Memorial Scholarship and I was honored to present a scholarship to a very deserving Sequim High School graduate who is pursuing career and technical education.

We also formed a business advocacy committee. This committee has already done some work advocating for our businesses and look forward to even more work in 2019. We have several board members lobbying for business in our region this legislative session and we look forward to reporting those activities more regularly with our membership.

Our final committee formed in 2018 is our business education committee. This is an area Anji is passionate about and we hope to really expand this upcoming year.

We are also looking forward to 2020 where we will be expanding our Citizen of the Year luncheon to include other deserving categories.

I encourage our membership to attend a board meeting. The synergy that happens at our meetings between our board and partners leaves you excited every time about our future in Sequim. Our board meetings are the 2nd Thursday of every month at 7:30 in the Lodge upstairs.

It has been an absolute pleasure to serve as President this past year. My time with the chamber has been exciting and has helped in my growth both as a professional and a person.

I thank our membership and board for your faith in me and I leave you all in good hands with Brian Jackson! Thank you!

MERCHANT’S GROUP

Chair: Colleen Robinson The Sequim Merchants Group met 3 times last year on the third Wednesday of the month during the months of February, June, & October. Meetings are held at 5:30pm at Las Palomas. Meeting dates for 2019 will be announced soon! The Merchants Group once again has continued to grow in attendance. Chamber membership is not required, and if your business is interested in becoming involved, call the Chamber (at 360-683-6197) to be added the e-mail list.

Many successful projects the group accomplished are as follows: • In March, Theresa from Solar City helped facilitate the donation of gift bags filled with items from local merchants to be presented to the Irrigation Festival Royalty at their annual Kick-Off dinner. This has now become a yearly tradition as a way of thanking the Royalty who so beautifully represent us all over our state!

• In April, the merchants put on a scavenger hunt with the help of Gretha Davis (a very dedicated and appreciated volunteer) called “Birdfest Birdquest” which was designed to encourage shoppers to once again visit a variety of stores. In partnership with the Audubon Society and the art class at Sequim High School, twelve stores hosted a “bird sculpture” created by the students. There was a game card that required participants to match the bird with the correct store. Gretha partnered with the Sequim High School Senior class and funds were raised for their

graduation party as well; This was a very successful event and great exposure for THE STUDENTS. The Merchants group looks forward to continuation of this as an annualpartnership event.

• May brought the Irrigation Festival in which the merchants displayed student art entries for the Festival’s button contest. Many families visited merchant’s stores in order to see their child’s artwork on display. Merchants and families once again really enjoyed having the The Family Fun Day and Kiddies Parade back on Washington Street.

• In July, during Sequim Lavender Weekend, the merchants decorated the bus stops in downtown Sequim and spruced up the down town with the addition of 150 lavender flags. The weather was amazing and we once again received many positive comments on how festive and welcoming the downtown looked!

• In October the merchants opened their doors to over 1,000 wonderful trick ’o treaters and gave away bucketful’s of goodies! the turnout this year was the best ever.

• The Saturday after Thanksgiving, Santa Claus arrived in the heart of Sequim to Centennial Place in

the Fire Department’s Antique Fire Truck. Thanks to Emily Westcott, Captain Crystal and many elves, the most beautiful tree and possibly the largest ever had was decorated by wonderful volunteers with thousands of lights. There was music, entertainment and family friendly activities all day long with hot chocolate and warm treats provided by our local Boy scout troop. a tree lighting ceremony and light-counting contest complete with gift certificates from many of Sequim’s merchants also took place. Once again, there was a tractor parade that followed which was loved by all! On that same Saturday, many of the merchants hosted open houses complete with holiday refreshments and special prizes or sales to encourage shopping local. This same weekend was the kick off of the “Elk on a Shelf” scavenger hunt for children with prizes generously donated by local merchants. Thank you to all who made our holiday season happy and bright!

MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE

Chair: Jeff Anderson In 2018, the Membership Committee continued the work of designing new membership packages based on the needs and attributes of our members. Utilizing past survey data, the expertise of Chamber staff and valuable input from our members (including a mid-year focus group), we developed four options for consideration. We will work with the Chamber board and staff to refine the details and pricing of these options.

We ended 2018 with 437 members, including 42 new members, but fell just short (within 2.33%) of our budgeted membership revenue goals. It is through membership dues that the Sequim-Dungeness Valley Chamber of Commerce is able to accomplish the work of actively promoting, educating and supporting the Sequim business community.

“Come Sail Away” Visit the array of treasures on the Chamber’s cruise to success! was the theme for this year’s 12th Annual Business Showcase. The exhibition and networking event was a huge success – it just seems to get bigger and better every year! 34 of our community’s business gems participated with displays and details of their products and services. Over 200 community members and fellow business owners got the royal treatment throughout a fun and educational evening while sampling good food, playing games and learning how to take their business to the next level. Special thanks to our sponsors and the volunteers, staff and board members who made it all possible!

Sequim Irrigation Festival In 2018 the Irrigation Festival and the Sequim-Dungeness Valley Chamber of Commerce began a new chapter of their collaboration. The Irrigation Festival is now its own entity, no longer under the umbrella of the Chamber. We continue our relationship as partner organizations, and we are thrilled to support the festival as it enters its 124th year. A huge thank you to all of the people to worked hard on this process, and for all the support of our community as we have transitioned! There truly is no place like home!

A look back and a look forward to 2019 The Sequim Chamber has had another successful and eventful year.

Serving as Executive Director of the Sequim Dungeness Valley Chamber is a constantly evolving and omnipresent position; however, intensely rewarding and fulfilling work! It is with deep appreciation I thank the Chamber Board, our dynamic members, devoted staff and welcoming and generous volunteers for their dedication of time and energy and support to the Chamber in 2018. As we enter the New Year, the membership voted in four new Board members: Charla Wright - Assured Hospice; Sara Nicholls - Sequim Free Clinic; Christine Bonelle – D.A. Davidson & Co.; and Brown Maloney – KNOP/ KSTI Radio Pacific.

We said goodbye to Board Members Nell Clausen – RE/ MAX Prime; Brandino Gibson – Worksource Washington; Jeff Anderson – Olympic Medical Center, and Darcie Senf – Strait View Credit Union, whose 3 year-terms ended in 2018. Our community with filled with compassionate, socially and civically minded members. We could not accomplish great things without your donation of time and spirit. Thank you; the Chamber and Visitor Information Center is greatly enhanced by your efforts and input!

It is this Chamber’s mission to advance and promote business by providing a forum to address issues, and to unite and support our membership and community through programs, events and services. By working together, and cultivating

a cohesive and resilient bond through our committees and projects and collaborative efforts we have worked to fulfill this commitment. In addition, we added 42 new members to the Sequim-Dungeness Valley Chamber of Commerce.

Our Downtown Merchants banded together and worked hard to beautify our downtown for the holidays, once again creating a tree-lighting ceremony and events related to Santa’s arrival, as well as supporting our retail sector in a “Shop Local” focus!

The 12th annual Business Showcase Expo with the theme: “Sail away with us” was a resounding achievement thanks to the support of our event sponsors, vendors, attendees and the Chamber volunteers and staff who worked tirelessly on this event. This expo provides a unique forum for Chamber members to showcase their products and services to the community and to network with valuable local resources.

The Shiso City Sister city visit in 2018 proved to be a wonderful experience for the host families and students. In September students traveled to Sequim from Shiso, Japan, staying with host families and attending classes at Sequim High School while their chaperones were escorted to the Friendship Garden at Carrie Blake Park and provided tours of Sequim Schools among other local areas of interest.

In October, Sequim students embarked on a tour of Japan culminating in a visit to Shiso where they were guests of students they had hosted in Sequim. Student recruitment is already underway to recruit 8th graders for 2019’s exchange program. And to round out the year, the Sequim Community Chorus blessed the community again with its 34th annual

performance during the holiday season.

The Chamber continued its marketing efforts through social media, providing one-stop information on the Chamber website and Facebook pages. The Chamber website and newly integrated Chamber management software has proved to be an excellent tool on many levels, as well as to provide the ability to increase and strengthen our services to its members as our community continues to grow. Our website now provides more effective search abilities, a user-friendly mobile site, and the ability to offer on-line payments via our website as well. The Chamber continues to provide both a monthly paper newsletter, provided to everyone who subscribes to the Sequim Gazette, as well as several communications every month, to its members via our electronic newsletter, all in an effort to showcase and support its members.

I would also like to extend thanks and appreciation to the 123nd Sequim Irrigation Festival Royalty Court: Queen Erin Gordon, sponsored by John L. Scott Sequim, Princess Gabi Simonson, sponsored by Joyful Noise Music, Princess Gracelyn Hurdlow, sponsored by Pondicherri Indian Import, Princess Liliana Williams, sponsored by Lopez Construction for their dedication and service to the festival, the Chamber, and the entire community through the year. This court served with poise and professionalism as wonderful ambassadors for Sequim while attending parades and events throughout Western Washington In addition to expanding the successful activities and events of 2018, the Chamber committees have some exciting new ideas and opportunities to launch. COMMUNITY EVENTS AND FESTIVALS The Sequim area is blessed with an abundance of events and festivals throughout the year. Each event contributes its own unique value to our community as a great place to live. These events and festivals not only bring in visitors to support our local economy, they also provide our residents with enjoyable activities and entertainment, enriching our lives as we take the opportunity to meet our neighbors and make new friends.

May 2018 hosted the 123rd Annual Irrigation Festival to Sequim – “123 Come to Sequim with Me.” As the longest continuous festival in Washington, the Irrigation Festival honors both our pioneers who had the foresight to call Sequim home but also the initiative to bring irrigation to the land to support our growing community.

May 2019 will host the 124th Irrigation Festival with the theme of “There is No Place Like Home.” As a Chamber sponsored community event, everyone is encouraged to participate and enjoy the festivities!

Lavender Weekend, produced by the many wonderful lavender farms located in the Sequim Dungeness Valley, continues to be the largest tourist-destination festival in the Sequim area and has earned Sequim the official designation as “The Lavender Capital of North America TM .”

Each and every July, more than 20,000 people visit the lavender farms on tour as well as participate in the multitude of events that take place during the third weekend of July.

From street fairs to driftwood, and quilt shows; art tours and musical entertainment, there were festival activities for every member of the family to enjoy.

Nowhere else in this part of the world offers these events and rural attractions during

the third weekend July. Several Chamber members participate in the farm tours and activities, and the Visitor Information Center is especially busy during July. The Chamber staff and volunteers contribute substantial time and energy to assisting visitors, answering questions, giving directions, and doing their best to make each and every visitor feel very welcomed in our unique community. Many volunteers assist on the lavender farms as well.

The Sequim Community Choir celebrated its 34th anniversary in December 2018 and performed their annual Christmas Concerts to full houses of local residents and community visitors.

First Federal Shenna Younger- Community Activist, and Mom extraordinaire. Shenna is the Development and Operations Director for Volunteers in Medicine of the Olympics. She’s been on the Sequim Chamber Board, the Sequim Chamber Ambassadors, the Irrigation Festival Board, Citizen’s for Sequim Schools, the Helen Haller PTO, and a volunteer at the Boys and Girls Club.

And, of course, she wears her family hat with pride. Shenna has one daughter attending Washington State University, and two tweens at Sequim Middle School.

NELL CLAUSEN, PAST PRESIDENT

Realtor, RE/MAX Prime Nell and her husband Scott made the decision to move to Sequim in 2003. They feel so very fortunate to live in this community and continue to enjoy all that it has to offer. Nell grew up in Issaquah WA and has been in sales and marketing her entire life. She currently works as a real estate broker with RE/MAX Prime in Sequim. Her community service includes being a Rotarian since 2003, working with Welfare for Animals Guild (WAG), volunteering at the annual Lavender Weekend, and serves as the Membership chair for the League of Woman Voters. continued Nell has worked with the Sequim Chamber of Commerce since moving here in 2003 as a representative of various sales and marketing positions with different companies. Nell understands the value and the commitment the Chamber has to represent the area for both the local businesses and for tourists who visit Sequim.

JEFF ANDERSON, MEMBERSHIP CHAIR

Olympic Medical Center Jeff Anderson, marketing manager for Olympic Medical Center (OMC), grew up in Spokane and moved to Seattle to attend the University of Washington, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in political science. He also holds a master’s degree in business administration from the Eller College of Management at the University of Arizona. He moved to Sequim in 2008 after visiting family in the area on a regular basis for many years. He and his wife, Nicole, have two children, Evan and Emma. Jeff and his family feel fortunate to live in this wonderful community, full of friendly people and natural beauty. Jeff is proud to represent OMC, and he is excited to contribute his skills to support the mission of the Sequim-Dungeness Valley Chamber of Commerce.

Darcie’s family represents 5 generations all living in Clallam County. She has been in the banking industry on the peninsula for the past 28 years starting with Seafirst Bank. Home Instead Senior Care Brian grew up in a family business in California. His parents purchased a Merry Maids franchise when he was 13 years old. He started at the bottom.

He did laundry, hang door hangers, scrubbed floors on his hands and knees. He did whatever it took to get the job done. Brian went off to college and his Dad asked him to return to help run the family business. Brian’s parents decided to step back from the company.

Brian led the company to purchase an adjoining territory and grew the two franchises to become the second largest operation in the Merry Maids organization.

In 1996, Brian found a more meaningful way to serve others. He purchased 2 franchises of Home Instead Senior Care. He successfully ran the two businesses together for many years.

In 2015, he and his wife decided to move to Sequim to purchase the Home Instead Senior Care serving Clallam, Jefferson, and Island counties. They have now sold their businesses in California and are proud to be 100% in Washington. He currently employs over 87 people in our local community.

Along the way Brian has learned many things. His employees make all of the difference in how they are able to serve our clients. Brian has lobbied for business issues at a Federal, State, and Local level. He understands that business owners must be good stewards of the communities they serve. Brian knows the struggles of trying to stay in the black and being sure that you have enough money to cover payroll. Brian understands the challenges of complying with labor law and business codes.

His vision for the Chamber of Commerce is to see it continue to promote positive business growth in our community. He would also like to see it add programs that help to educate business owners on better ways to grow their businesses and stay up-to-date on current regulations. Brian feels that one way that the businesses can ensure that law makers understand how laws will affect small business in our community and our State is by sharing their stories and inviting them to our business so that they truly understand the issues.

RAY CHIRAYATH

Ray Chirayath was born in India and has lived in various parts of the world. His wife Marion, who is a Hematologist/Oncologist, moved to the United States 22 years ago. In August 2014, he moved to Sequim. Ray works as a Financial Advisor, servicing clients in Sequim and the surrounding areas, based out of an office in Port Angeles. As a muscian, he participates with and supports the Peninsula Singers and Port Angeles Symphony. His hobbies besides music are tennis and woodworking. Ray is convinced that in life, some of us are presented opportunities that others are not. He considers himself one of the more fortunate ones, and with this comes the obligation that we give back in return.

Ray volunteers on several boards such as Port Angeles Education Foundation, WA and the United Way, as well as being an active Rotarian with the Sequim Sunrise Rotary.

BRANDINO GIBSON

Worksource State Employment Security Department In November 2014 Brandino became a Sequim Dungeness Valley Chamber Courtesy Board Member giving him valuable experience working with the Board of Directors. This eventually led to his appointment to fill a vacancy as a full board member. During this time he has been a very active member, attending and assisting in numerous Chamber Events.

COLLEEN ROBINSON Prior to moving to Sequim in 2010, Brandino was Director of Lake College in Yuba City Habitat for Humanity California, responsible for the day to day operation of an accredited vocational school. Working Colleen Robinson was born and raised in Baltimore, MD. She moved for a business that was community connected, he found it imperative to be part of the Yuba to Sequim in September 1995 with her husband Craig, daughter Amanda Sutter Chamber of Commerce. Brandino joined the Chamber as an Ambassador in October and son Ian. In the nearly 20 years here in Sequim she has grown her 1997 and continued as an Ambassador until moving to Sequim in 2010. family by foster-adopting 3 children, Desiree, Hayley and Zak. Colleen has Community involvement has always been very important to Brandino. In April 2013 volunteered for many local organizations over the past 21 years, although he was an integral part of starting Sequim FC, Adult Soccer League in Sequim which has not all at the same time. These organizations include Sequim Lavender grown to over 200 participants providing a healthy activity while building strong community Festival, Sequim Family Advocates, Citizens for Sequim Schools, City of Sequim Parks connections. He is also very active with local school activities. He is extremely honored to Advisory Board, North Olympic Foster Parent Association, Helen Haller & Greywolf PTAs, serve another year as a board member. and Sequim Community Church Youth Group to name just a few. Colleen is a member of Sequim Sunrise Rotary and currently serves as the Youth Services Director. Colleen NANCY MERRIGAN worked for the Sequim School District for 8 ½ years in the Special Education Department Nancy Merrigan moved to the area in July of 2006. Mother of 5 and as Administrative Assistant to the Special Education Director, and in January of 2015 grandmother of 12! She has been part of the hospitality industry since accepted a position as Community Outreach Director at Habitat for Humanity of Clallam 2006 where she has held positions in housekeeping, front desk and food County. Colleen has a passion for giving back to the community and feels that her experience service management. She is currently the General Manager at Quality and relationships with so many community partners will make her a great Chamber of Inn & Suites. Before that Merrigan was trained as an OB nurse where Commerce Board director. she worked with mothers and babies. Merrigan says, “I love working with people, both staff, guests, and our community. I love to make a difference EMILY SLY in people’s lives.” Nancy loves being a team leader, an Ambassador, and a Board Member Emily Sly is the Library Manager at the Sequim Branch Libary, part of for the Sequim community! the North Olympic Library System (NOLS). Working at the library allows Emily to do what she loves: build community connections, nurture curiosity STEVE PERRY about the world, and be of service to others.

Steve Perry was born and raised in Seattle and attended Washington State Emily began working for NOLS in 2009, when she was hired to create the University. Steve has been married to Karen for the past 33 years, and has volunteer program and manage the library’s Outreach to the Homebound raised three boys, Daniel, Matthew and Justin. Steve started in the newspaper Program. Along with serving as the District Legislative Representative; I was appointed associate dentist, but shortly moved to Montana where he and a business partner developed to Washington State School Directors Association (WSSDA) Legislative Representative for a multi location dental office serving rural Montanan’s. In 2014 his family and he relocated Director Area 4; WSSDA’s Trust Lands Task Force; and serve as WSSDA’s Representative to Sequim, WA where we have been since. Dr. Pocock owns and operates Advanta Dental to the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Healthy Forest Health Advisory Committee. located on Sequim Ave, formerly owned by Gary Lang. His wife home schools their 3 children I am a recipient of the Certificate of Merit for Community Leadership and Service to in the mornings and then sends them to the public schools the second half of the day. The Education, Washington Association of School Administrators & a recent graduate of WSSDA’s kids are heavily involved in activities such as Dance, Acrobatics, Karate, Scouts, Choir, and Leadership Program. I have served on the Sequim Irrigation Festival Board; Sequim Chamber Piano lessons. As a family they love to get out and hike, go to museums, and golf. They look Ambassadors; and as a Sister City Chaperone for the Student Delegation Trip to Shiso, Japan forward to being a part of Sequim for many years to come. in 2014; and was recently served as the Grand Marshal for the 2016 Sequim Irrigation Festival.

Anji was born and raised on the Olympic Peninsula, where she has lived her entire life despite a few years spent in Honolulu, Hawaii. She has been in the Community Service industry for 20 years, working for both public and private enterprises. Her education is rooted in Business Management, Public Administration, Community Engagement and Development.

Anji joined the Chamber as Executive Director in October 2018 and enjoys working with dedicated Board of Directors who are passionate about their business community and devoted to its success.

Anji takes great pleasure being active in all of the many aspects of Chamber involvement and enjoys the vast variety her job entails, as well as working closely with business owners and organizations throughout the Sequim-Dungeness Valley. Representing the Sequim Chamber and the community is an energetic task; however, it is a privilege and an honor to do so. Anji is the proud parent of two rescue creatures – Tsigi, our canine greeter at the Visitor Information Center, and Lefty the horse who watches over our town from his barn in the hills above Happy Valley.

Melanie Sands relocated to Sequim in 2014 from Jackson, Wyoming, where she worked more than 28 years for the Snow King Resort Hotel as their Human Resources Director. Her experience there supports the importance of tourism and sharing the beautiful community we live in. She joined the Chamber as their Financial Administrator in February of 2015. She and her husband enjoy gardening in the temperate climate Sequim offers, and the wonderful seafood this area provides. They have 3 grown daughters and 3 grand children.

KELSEY SANDS, ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT

Kelsey Sands moved to Sequim in May of 2018 from Longmont, Colorado, where she spent 4 years working in banking. Being from a small town in Wyoming, and after living in Denver and Houston, Kelsey decided it was time to find another small town like Sequim. Being close to family was the deciding factor for her big move.

Kelsey loves meeting new people and experiencing what life has to offer. Her position as the Administrative Coordinator gives her the opportunity to meet the businesses of Sequim and get involved in the community. Kelsey enjoys spending time outside exploring what the Pacific Northwest has to offer with her 3 dogs, Jax, Rae and Poe.

FLOWER BASKETS Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

To all businesses, organizations and individuals who sponsored a Sequim flower basket! Each year, Chamber board member Emily Westcott works in collaboration with the Sequim School District agriculture class and the City of Sequim to create more than 100 flower baskets to decorate downtown Sequim.

The agriculture class selects the flower theme, buys the seeds and starter plants, and prepares the baskets. The city crews install the baskets and then water and fertilize the baskets until nature dictates their removal. From May through September, visitors from around the world and local residents enjoy these prolific blooming baskets. The program has been under way for more than 20 years and is a shining example of teamwork!

The proceeds from the sponsors also fund the annual holiday lights that magically appear each year at First Security and Centennial Place at the corner of Sequim Avenue and Washington Street. This magical corner plays host to Santa, Mrs. Claus and the Irrigation Festival Royalty elves each year along with the musical talent of the Sequim City Band and a host of other entertainment.

In addition to the baskets and holiday lights, sponsorship of the baskets contributes to a variety of events designed to encourage visitors to shop in the Sequim-Dungeness Valley area.

The Chamber Board of Directors adopts an annual budget to provide for the most efficient and productive use of revenues received by the Chamber throughout the year. The board then monitors Chamber revenues and expenditures through a variety of reports provided at each monthly meeting of the board.

The Chamber’s fiscal year is based on the calendar year beginning Jan. 1 through Dec. 31. The Chamber is in good financial standing and made healthy additions to its reserves in 2018.

As indicated in past years, it is important to note that the Chamber’s annual budget provides for separate accounting for the following activities: Chamber member services, Visitor Information Center operations, Flower Basket/Retail Trade, Howard Wood Memorial Scholarship fund and the Sequim Community Choir.

Citizen of the Year Award For her years of volunteer work with Sequim Museum and Arts Center and other community projects, Stipe was selected the Sequim-Dungeness Valley Chamber of Commerce’s 2017 Citizen of the Year on Tuesday.

Reandeau Stipe was one of five finalists for Sequim’s top civic award, a field that included Gretha Davis, Dave Shreffler, Jean Wyatt and, posthumously, Robert Streett.

“I was stunned because the competition was of such high caliber,” Reandeau Stipe said Tuesday of receiving the honor. “It was nice to be recognized for the service you owe the community,” she told the appreciative crowd at Sunland Golf & Country Club on Tuesday.

Reandeau Stipe was nominated because of her dedication, enthusiasm and preservation of local history as well as support of the community in her role as volunteer executive director of the Sequim Museum & Arts Center.

Steve Vogel, former Clallam County Fire District No. 3 chief and longtime Sequim resident, nominated Reandeau Stipe. “I don’t know anyone who puts in more time than she does,” Vogel said. An author and former volunteer with the American Red Cross, Reandeau Stipe also was nominated for her involvement in the creation of a veterans monument on Sequim Avenue and recent renovations to the Old Dungeness Schoolhouse.

She was instrumental in the recent creation of Sequim Prairie Nights Car Show, a day-long car show and shine in August that benefited nonprofits such as Sequim Museum & Arts Center and the Sequim Food Bank. “That’s a lot for one person,” Vogel said. “I don’t know how she does it.” Bill Littlejohn, chair of the Citizen of the Year nomination committee, emceed the event, noting, “There are so many people in this town who go out of their way to help. We had five great nominees.”

Other finalists were lauded by their nominators: Lorri Gilchrist for Davis; Lee Bowen for Shreffler; Deon Kapetan for Wyatt, and Sheena Younger for Streett.

A committee of previous recipients selected finalists from a pool of Sequim citizens nominated by members of the community. Finalists are chosen based on their history of outstanding volunteer service to the Sequim community. Annually, the Sequim-Dungeness Valley Chamber of Commerce seeks nominations for and determines the Citizen of the Year under the following criteria: • Nominees shall be residents of Eastern Clallam County (primarily Sequim School District area.)

• Nominees shall be persons who have performed outstanding service to the community.

• Service rendered by nominees shall be above, beyond and generally outside the regular occupation of the nominee.

• Two persons working jointly in a community project or projects may be nominated to receive a joint award. Groups of more than two will not be considered.

Persons making nominations should bear in mind the foregoing guidelines, while fully understanding that the selection tribunal must, of necessity, be the final authority.

The Sequim Citizen of the Year 2018 will be announced on Feb. 26 at the Chamber’s luncheon to be held at Guy Cole Convention Center.

The Chamber and Visitor Information Center assisted approximately 4,000 phone callers; experienced over 46,000 website visits and reached over 2 million facebook viewers in 2018 as well!

The Chamber staff and volunteers operate the Visitor Information Center (VIC) seven • Access to the Internet days a week with closures scheduled only for major holidays. And that’s where our staff and volunteers can help!

In addition to providing staff support for telephone calls, travel planner mailing and e-mail responses, the Chamber staff and volunteers provide information at the VIC to encourage visitors to: 1.
