“U
niting top talent with top employers of Snohomish County and beyond!” is more than a tagline — it’s a success story with each Snohomish County Career Fair. Whether you’re fresh out of school or looking for a career change, this is the place to be on Thursday, Feb. 13. “Even if you’re not currently on the hunt for a new job, this is a great opportunity to network and learn more about employers you may be interested in working with in the future,” said Randie Pospical, HeraldMedia’s recruitment specialist. Take some of the burden off your job search by meeting more than 30 recruiters all in one place. Just dress for success with your resume, cover letter, and references in hand. Job seekers have been interviewed or even hired on the spot. “We often hear from employers that they’re confident several hires will be made from the event,” Pospical said. We are excited to bring the Snohomish County Career Fair to the south Snohomish County community with a new venue, the Nile Shrine Golf Center. Returning companies like Hansen Bros. Moving & Storage, Pacific Seafood, and Columbia Distributing will host booths during this tenth installment of the Career Fair. Some of the new faces will be Romac Industries, AR Modular RF, and Northshore School District. (For the full list of participating companies, see sidebar to the right.) “With the wide variety of employers and job openings, many job seekers find just what

Deciding if a career change is for you
C
hanging careers is a significant step, especially for men and women who are firmly established in their fields. A career change can be just as rewarding and life-changing and there are some things professionals might want to consider before resolving to change careers in the new year. CHANGING CAREERS VS. SWITCHING JOBS Changing careers and switching jobs are not the same thing, and some people may want the former while others may only be in need of the latter. A full-fledged career change may
require returning to school and a willingness to start from the bottom. A job change typically allows professionals to stay in their fields and move on to another position, whether it’s with their existing employer or with another company. CAREER TRAJECTORY The direction of a person’s career may also influence whether or not they want to make a career change. Established professionals mulling a career change should consider their willingness to start anew. Many mid-career professionals have worked for years to

Established professionals must also consider the effect that a career change may have on their families. Married midcareer professionals should discuss changing careers with their spouse, and even their children if the kids are old enough
to understand. Discuss the pros and cons of changing careers and the impact that making such a change may have on your family’s daily life. Will the family have to move? Will the family lifestyle change dramatically, if at all? Talking things through with family may help working professionals determine if changing careers is the best decision for them. LONG-TERM GOALS Long-term goals are another thing to consider before making a career change. That’s especially true for mid- or late-career professionals who may already have made significant progress
toward achieving their long-term goals. Discuss long-term goals with your spouse or significant other and how changing careers might affect those goals. Longterm goals can change, and while the ability to realize those goals might not weigh heavily in your decision regarding a career change, understanding how such a change might affect your retirement or other late-life plans can only help you make the most informed decision possible. Many people resolve to change careers at the dawn of a new year. But such a decision requires the careful consideration of a host of factors.

he Puget Sound region is famous for pioneering new ideas. When Boeing put its flag down in Everett, it marked a new, transformative era in aviation. And Amazon has led an e-commerce revolution and changed the retail experience around the world. Those companies – and so many others – turned experimental ideas into standard practice. As an innovative model for higher learning, WGU Washington also fits that mold. The nonprofit, online university began when the state legislature collaborated to make high-quality, low-cost degree programs accessible to more Washingtonians. They leveraged the latest distance learning technologies, a new, competency-based learning approach, and unmatched student support to disrupt and redefine the educational experience.

Today, WGU Washington’s statewide enrollment has increased to more than 12,500 fulltime students – including more than 1,400 in Snohomish County. More important, the university has awarded more than 18,000 degrees to individuals across Washington – including more than 2,000 in Snohomish County. The average age of WGU Washington’s students is 36. Many of those people are working and raising families while also pursuing degrees. WGU Washington was established for exactly that audience: As a cutting-edge alternative for midcareer adults who want to lift themselves to the next rung on the economic ladder – but for whom a traditional college experience is an impractical dream. It is designed to be a game-changer – a disruptive innovator – and to prove that an affordable degree is within reach for everyone. The university is committed to keeping tuition low. here’s no doubt about it -- what you do each day for work can make a huge impact on your overall well-being. According to a Society for Human Resource Management survey, key job satisfaction aspects include job security, respect, trust and a positive and healthy environment. Careers in the growing home care industry can be particularly fulfilling. “There are few occupations more rewarding than empowering someone who needs a little help,” says Jennifer Sheets, president and chief executive officer of Caring Brands International and Interim HealthCare Inc. “A home healthcare career is a great fit for people who value flexibility and have a calling to help others and make a difference in the world.”
This is not a desk job. Caregivers aren’t trapped in a cubicle doing paperwork or staring at a screen all day. They’re out in their communities, helping to keep seniors and others happy, healthy and safe. Their view changes throughout the day, keeping things fresh and invigorating. No two days are the same. While daily tasks are straightforward, no two days are exactly the same for caregivers. Home care careers mean that one day, you could be playing a game with a senior; the next, you could be sipping tea and sharing stories. The work is meaningful. Working with patients to provide care and help them stay healthy is immensely

rewarding. Yet, even when days are stressful, home care workers have the satisfaction of knowing they’re having a positive impact on the individuals they serve, as well as their communities. It’s flexible. Part-time, full-time, per diem, with flexibility in location and availability -- these are just a few of the ways in which workers can customize the look and feel of a home care career. The industry is booming. As more seniors are electing to stay in their homes, an increasing number of home care aides and nurses are needed to provide them with essential care. Home health aides and personal care aides is projected to grow, much faster than the average for all occupations, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

4 tips to dress for success at work
I
n today’s workplace, many employers have abandoned strict dress code policies, providing employees with more flexibility to dress casually. Although a more relaxed dress code gives you the creative freedom to express yourself, not everything may be appropriate for a work setting. Here is the fashion 411 on workplace attire today. 1. Understand your company’s dress policy. If you’re unclear of your employer’s dress code policy, just ask your manager or HR. Thirty-eight percent of 25 to 35-year-olds say they’ve been asked to dress more
professionally by their manager or HR, and 45 percent say they know someone who has been sent home from work for breaking dress code policies. Take note of what people around you are wearing, especially those in senior-level positions. As the saying goes, dress for the job you want, not the job you have. 2. Dress for comfort and performance. Don’t be afraid to embrace your personal style, as long as it stays within your company’s guidelines. Sixty-three percent of younger workers (aged 18 to 35) say they actually prefer dressing up for work, as it boosts their confidence and performance. The definition of

“dressing up” can vary from person to person, ranging from casual to conservative, depending on one’s taste. 3. Don’t break the bank. Fifty-five percent of managers agree they care more about performance than what their employees wear, so don’t feel pressured to break the bank in order to keep up with the workplace Joneses. Your expertise is more valuable than any sparkly set of cufflinks or a pair of heels will ever be. However, you can look great for less with a few smart strategies. 4. Leave the weekend wardrobe at home. According to many U.S. employees, some

PNWCareers.com things are still considered a bit too casual for the office. In fact, the survey found that the majority of Americans think ripped jeans and leggings are not appropriate, even in a casual office environment. Therefore, if you show up to work in ripped jeans, there’s a good chance (statistically speaking) that you won’t be making a great impression. The same goes for leggings -- sorry athleisure lovers. Show your personality and wear what you feel most confident in, though it’s always a best practice to be mindful of today’s cultural norms and what most people feel is appropriate for the workplace. 4 ways professionals can improve their resumes
C
hanging jobs can be a difficult decision to make, especially later in one’s career. In many ways, landing a new job is more challenging than ever thanks to the technologydriven society in which people live. One thing that has evolved is the resume. Although creating a powerful resume has always been a challenge, writing — or modifying one — for today’s digital world requires some insider tips. Adapting a resume as one ages and has gained experience can be advantageous. A wellcrafted resume is one way for professionals to demonstrate
how their skill set is current and adaptable to today’s business climate. The following tips can help improve a resume when the time comes to move on to a new job. 1. Focus on your accomplishments Rather than focusing on job responsibilities at each job you held, gear the resume around what you achieved in each position. This will help identify how you performed in the position, instead of just a general retelling of what you did. It can be challenging to achieve this for jobs that don’t naturally lend themselves to numerically quantitative results (i.e.,
increased department sales by 15 percent), but it’s still possible to use a resume to illustrate your achievements. Rather than state that you were responsible for providing customer service, explain that you built your reputation on conveying difficult technical terms to the layperson, serving as the go-to employee for translating job jargon for outside correspondence. If you have quantitative proof of how you accomplished something, certainly add it. This can include measures of profit growth, reduction of debt or increase in customer base.
2. Aim for the future Rather than emphasize what you did, highlight what you plan to do. This means giving greater weight to the expertise that will translate into your new position. Chances are you can find skills that you honed in one or more jobs that translate into credentials that can be used on another. 3. Choose the right keywords It’s important to optimize a résumé for digital scanning, which has become a major component of the employment sector. This includes using the correct keywords and phrasing so that your résumé will get “flagged.” Take your cue from

Also, consult the “about us” area of a prospective employer’s website. This area may offer clues about buzz words for the industry. 4. Set yourself apart Engage in activities that can improve your marketability. Be sure to list training, coursework, degree, or volunteer efforts that pertain directly to the skills needed for the job to which you’re applying.
