n 1989, a group of concerned islanders observed changes occurring throughout Bainbridge Island — and took a stand. To protect the island’s sensitive habitat and resources, and to preserve the quality of life that defines our community, the Bainbridge Island Land Trust was formed. Thanks to the contributions of initial volunteer board members, the first-ever land trust conservation easement was recorded in 1990 at the corner of Highway 305 and Day Road. Fast-forward 31 years, the land trust is firmly established as the premier conservation organization on Bainbridge Island, conserving and defending habitat that benefits not only the Island but the greater Puget Sound ecosystem. To date, the land trust has helped permanently conserve more than 1,400 acres on Bainbridge Island, while continuing the most ambitious and successful land conservation campaign in its history: Stand for the Land. The land trust started the year with restoration efforts on the newly acquired Miller-Kirkman Preserve at the head of Little Manzanita Bay. Islanders and friends toured the newly protected 14 acres adjacent to the greater Gazzam Lake Nature Preserve (Jablonko Preserve), and the land trust opened a trail on the Cougar Creek Preserve. All these newly acquired preserves help connect critical wildlife habitat and build a stronger network of protected lands. “Natural Bainbridge” — was published and beckons us to explore and safeguard the Island’s exquisite preserves, protected areas, and parks — an all-volunteer publication! And at the end of 2019, the land trust debuted Springbrook Creek Preserve, a 23-acre forested refuge that serves as the fourth property

acquisition in the ongoing Stand for the Land campaign. The land trust’s science-driven approach to land acquisition and management was further bolstered by the completion of a multi-year watershed assessment in conjunction with its partners, Wild Fish Conservancy, Bainbridge Island Watershed Council, city of Bainbridge Island, and Washington Department of Ecology. Through this assessment, Springbrook Creek Preserve was identified to contain one of the island’s finest fish habitats. With Springbrook Creek Preserve, the campaign has added nearly 66 acres of conservation lands to the Island. 2019 saw numerous other successes for the land trust, the community, and the island’s natural areas. Fourteen volunteer work parties were held, which brought dozens of islanders together to take part in local conservation efforts including invasive weed removal, native vegetation plantings, and other stewardship activities. The Land Trust Teen Conservation Crew, a group of local teens aged 14 and older, also made significant gains in invasive weed removal and habitat restoration. The organization remains incredibly grateful for the astounding support the campaign has received by the many islanders who share a similar vision — a community grounded in its connection to nature, and a healthy, vibrant island supportive of diverse wildlife and habitat. “Keep an eye out for a Stand for the Land campaign announcement later this spring on a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity so exciting, we hope it will mobilize our entire community,” says executive director Jane Stone.

ARTS and culture

Once you’ve had your fill of the island’s natural assets — the beaches, trails and parks — you can be sure to find something close at hand to tantalize your creative side indoors as well. Bainbridge Performing Arts, the Bainbridge Symphony Orchestra, Ovation! Performing Arts Northwest and Island Theater all offer praise-gathering productions on a regularly rotating schedule. There’s always something to see. Also, Bainbridge Cinemas and the historic Lynwood Theater offer brand-new blockbusters and speciality silver screen fare as well, including revived classics and live ballet and special concert events broadcast via satellite from around the globe. Looking instead to bust a move? Maybe cut a little rug? No sweat — unless you want to, of course. You’re never far from the chance to dance on Bainbridge Island. Between the Treehouse Café, Bainbridge Brewing, Pegasus Coffee and a constant calendar of shows at Rolling Bay Hall, you’ll have a chance to rock here on the rock almost any night of the week. Most of all though, Bainbridge is renowned for its galleries and museums, including the epicenter of island art: the Bainbridge Island Museum of Art. Within an easy walk from there, guests can enjoy monthly rotating displays at Bainbridge Arts & Crafts, Danger, Roby-King Galleries, the Steven Fey fine art photography gallery and more. For a real special treat, be sure to check out downtown Winslow’s First Friday Art Walk. This social staple runs from 6 to 8 p.m. on the first Friday of every month. Get out there early to beat the crowds and make sure you get a taste of the best wines. Art is at the heart of island living. Whatever moves you, bet you’ll find it on Bainbridge.

A

ctors, designers, artists, musicians, and audiences have gathered together to make magic with Bainbridge Performing Arts for more than six decades. Since the days of tents and storefront theaters to the present, BPA’s mission has been to build, educate, and inspire this fabulous community. BPA believes that when people come together with creativity and generosity anything becomes possible. Live theatre and music demands our presence; it pulls us out of our daily worries and plants us firmly before stories that reveal themselves on stage. No matter your politics or passions, age or origin, together we share an experience under one roof at BPA that commands our attention and invokes connection and compassion. It demands that we feel, and think, and act as part of something greater than ourselves — and we think that’s a really good thing. BPA’s 2019 Mainstage offerings included “The Revolutionists,” “Mamma Mia!”, “As You Like It” (BPA’s seventh annual summertime Shakespeare performance) held at the Bloedel Reserve, “The Rocky Horror Show,” and the sold-out run of “Matilda The Musical.” BPA’s theatre season was augmented by Bainbridge Symphony Orchestra’s four-concert classical season, The EDGE Improv, and BPA Theatre School, plus the anti-bullying cabaret “We Are Here,” the 40th annual Seattle International Comedy Competition, Anzanga’s eighth annual appearance, live Stand-Up, Bainbridge Dance Center’s 38th annual performance, Island Theatre’s eighth annual Ten-Minute Play

Festival, and more. BPA shows, directors, actors, and technical staff have earned rave reviews from Kitsap Sun, Drama in the Hood, Broadway World, AXS, and Theatre Puget Sound. It remains the privilege of BPA’s all-volunteer board of trustees and dedicated staff to channel the artistry of our community and bring a taste of magic and meaning to the island they love. Bainbridge Symphony Orchestra’s 2019 — 2020 season continues with “Women of Power!” — a special February concert celebrating the extraordinary, but often overlooked, contributions of women to orchestral music and featuring the superbly-talented pianist Yuka Sasaki, BSO’s April collaboration with Bainbridge Chorale for “Ein deutsches Requiem” at the Bainbridge High School Gym, and BSO’s June send-off “Dancing with the Symphony.” The 2019–2020 Mainstage season continues with “Fun Home,” based on the best-selling graphic novel by Alison Bechdel, Kate Hamill’s adaptation of “Pride and Prejudice,” and Shakespeare’s spellbinding psychological thriller, “Macbeth,” at the Bloedel Reserve this July. Also ahead this spring are a collaboration between Constellation Choir and Bridges, A String Orchestra, Taiko Drumming, a “best of” reprise from the Seattle International Comedy Competition, and more. BPA thanks the Bainbridge community for 63 years of support!

Island SPORTS AND RECREATION Opportunities to get in on the action on Bainbridge are everywhere, and whether you’re going out for the team or looking for something a little more off the beaten path, the island has what it takes to get you moving. Though it may seem that much of the local emphasis is on youth sports, the high school’s many championship-earning teams and clubs as well as the various youth leagues, old-timers too will find plenty of ways to shake the dust off as they explore and enjoy the multitude of recreational options on the island. Whether you’re looking for beaches to relax on, trails to hike and bike, boats to sail or games to play, Bainbridge has it all.

And in early 2016, island voters approved a $16 million bond measure to pay for new and improved facilities, as well as a 9-cent levy increase fore more firefighters to staff the department’s north end station.
