2020 Auburn Residents’ Guide
A Message from the Mayor With more than 80,000 residents and a growing regional economy, our city continues to change each year. Whether you have lived here a lifetime, or just a few years, we are all experiencing the exciting evolution of our city and watching as Auburn rises in the ranks to become one of the largest cities in our state. We a r e s e e i n g o u r downtown core continue to be revitalized with new businesses and housing and we are watching as innovative companies from
around the globe continue to invest in our community. From the new Fieldhouse USA complex at The Outlet Collection to aerospace manufacturer Cascade Gasket, Auburn has become a leader in the Puget Sound’s economic development. Yet even as we begin to experience the transitions that all cities face as they grow, we continue to foster the hometown spirit that makes this place so special to us. We are a city where people from all walks of life have a place at the table
and where people come together to contribute to our collective successes. I hope that you will find new and exciting ways to experience our city in this year’s Residents’ Guide, whether that be exploring our growing downtown or joining us for one of our citywide celebrations. I look forward to all that the year ahead holds for our city and to working on your behalf to make our city even greater. Sincerely, Nancy Backus

Public Transportation King County Metro Transit
http://metro.kingcounty.gov/ Metro Transit is the local transit operator for King County, providing local bus services that link destinations within the community and providing regional connections at the downtown Auburn Transit Center and the Auburn 15th ST NW Park & Ride. Metro Transit has more than 10 bus routes serving Auburn, including some DART routes. Two transit routes have teamed up to provide Auburn residents and visitors access to some of Auburn's most popular destinations. Metro routes 910 and 919 provide service to the Auburn SuperMall, YMCA, Auburn Library, Auburn Senior Center, Downtown Auburn, and the North Auburn Business District.
DART
off passengers within a defined service area, DART service may allow you to arrange for transit service closer to a location. DART does not go door-to-door. It operates on a fixed schedule, but one that has more flexibility than regular Metro Transit buses. The cost for DART service is the same as regular bus rides on Metro and is available to everyone. To use DART, call toll-free 1-866-261DART(3278) or 1-800-246-1646 (TTY).
SOUND TRANSIT (SOUNDER TRAIN)
Sound Transit operates the Sounder commuter rail service on the TacomaSeattle route via the BNSF Railway. Sound Transit provides weekday peakhour trips northbound to Seattle in the AM and southbound to Tacoma in the PM. Additional special-event service to and from games for the Mariners, Seahawks and Sounders FC is offered on selected weekends. Nine trains operate in each direction between Tacoma and Seattle each weekday, completing the commuter rail service specified in Sound Move, Sound Transit's Phase I investment package.
ACCESS
Metro Transit also operates ACCESS Transportation, a paratransit service providing door-to-door, shared-ride van transportation within most of King County. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requires curb-tocurb paratransit service as a safety net for persons whose disabilities prevent use of accessible non-commuter, fixedroute bus service. Complementary paratransit service is intended to offer a comparable level of service to that provided by regular bus service.

Proud Tradition: Veterans Day Parade Honoring veterans is a tradition in the City of Auburn. And for the past 54 years, the Veterans Day Parade has acknowledged the sacrifices made by American veterans, past and present, with one of the largest processions west of the Mississippi.
The mile-long parade typically lasts about two hours, featuring marching bands, ROTC units, re-enactors, active military units and military vehicles from all eras.
vehicles, veterans' units, honor guards and more. Auburn is designated by the Veterans Day National Committee and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs as a regional site for the celebration of Veterans Day. The 55th edition of the tradition is Nov. 7 on Main Street.
Last year's parade presented more than 200 entries and nearly 6,000 parade participants, showcasing American strength of will, endurance and purpose.
That parade included more than 25 high school marching bands, military

Welcome to the Auburn School District Welcome to the Auburn School District! I would like to highlight some successes and let you know what is on the horizon. We are serving a record number of students this year—more than 17,000 students in our 22 schools. Auburn is a great place to live and raise a family and our enrollment shows it!
To help meet the demand of increased enrollment, the Auburn community passed a $456 million bond in 2016 and we are on the path to replacing six of our
aging schools and building two new elementary schools. The new Olympic Middle School opened in September, on time and on budget. Construction of the new Dick Scobee Elementary and our 15th elementary, Bowman Creek Elementary, is underway and both schools will open this fall. We will break ground on Elementary #16 and a new Pioneer Elementary this spring. The support and strong commitment of our community will contribute to our success for generations. We are in the third year of
a 5-year strategic plan to guide the work in achieving our primary goal of 100 percent graduation for all Auburn students. We have a system-wide commitment to this goal that begins in the early grades and continues through a variety of opportunities and supports at the secondary level. We achieved our goal of targeted 1:1 technology for all students thanks to the technology levy passed in 2014. Students are learning how to learn with technology. It is transforming personalized learning for all students.
In Auburn, we want each student to be successful and are looking at everything we do with a lens of equity. A large contingent of teachers, principals, support staff and administrators participate in a variety of trainings to obtain tools to close

Lorie Larson, former director of Phoenix Rising, is working out who the tenants will be. Phoenix Rising is a part of Valley Cities Behavioral Health campus in north Auburn which helps provide housing and specialized services for young people beset by addiction, mentalhealth problems and homelessness. City officials say the site offers many positives, including its proximity to DSHS, WorkSource, Sound Mental Health, the We Care Day Clinic and Valley Cities, the Metro bus stop at the site, and the potential to expand the center into a number of the adjacent empty storefronts. Auburn’s vision for its onestop shop embraces the following:

And when court is not in session, the facility would provide classroom, educational and meeting spaces and room for service providers to have temporary space on a regularly recurring schedule; • Providing a space for emergency food services and to enhance opportunities to make healthier food options more available; and
• Providing ongoing space to a handful of community, social and/or human service providers that advances the mission of the hub and the individuals and families that rely upon those services.
Near the close of 2019, the Auburn City Council undid a crucial sticking point by giving Backus the goahead to enter into a lease agreement that contained a first-right-of-offer clause rather than a first-right-ofrefusal clause.

Catastrophes can happen at any time
Preparing for three days will help you make it through many possible disasters in the Puget Sound region, including major storms and even small earthquakes. However, to make it through a major catastrophe, like Hurricane Katrina or the earthquake and tsunami in Japan, you’ll need to be prepared for longer, at least 7 to 10 days.

Build a Kit for at Least 7 to 10 Days!
Imagine if resources aren’t available for seven or more days. You might have to take care of minor injuries, and access to resources will likely be limited. Help your family be better prepared by gathering additional supplies and customizing the list to meet your needs. Once you have the basics, think about items you could use to help yourself and others, or simply improve your comfort. Identify a storage container or a key location to place your survival kit, then gather and store supplies. Supplies include water and food as well as items for shelter and warmth, first aid, communication, personal hygiene and sanitation. It’s possible your home could be damaged and you may have to evacuate, so be sure to include a backpack or a similar bag so you can pack some of these items to go.
