has seen a range of generations come through, some mainstays are seniors that have been attending the show for years and years just for fun and have no intention of spending any money on projects. Lately the folks that have been spending the money are the latter half of Gen X and early millennials who have purchased older homes in need of renovation and remodel.

After not seeing the sun for well over 80 days, the blue skies and warmer temperatures around Kitsap County are sure signs that Spring is on its way and its time to start thinking about those home projects that were put off all winter long, and what better way to spark ideas than to visit the Peninsula Home and Garden Expo! The Peninsula Home and Garden Expo is sponsored by the Kitsap Building Association (KBA) and has been happening every spring for 40 years. This year’s event takes place at the Kitsap County Fairgrounds on March 14-15 and provides an opportunity for home owners to meet with experts, learn some DIY tricks and see what improvements they can make to their homes this spring and summer. “We typically have close to 150 exhibitors that come and provide information about all things housing and remodeling and gardening for this particular expo,” said Russ Shiplet, Executive Officer for KBA. “You can come into that show and you can find out anything from how to have a new deck built to new window treatments that are out there, new energy efficiencies that are going on in heating and cooling systems, solar panels etc.” The intent of the show is recognizing that as the weather gets better people are anxious to get out there and see what is available for them to improve their

homes, yards, gardens and properties. It also provides an opportunity for exhibitors to generate a lot of leads, contacts and business with potential customers. Like in every industry, there are trends that become popular and can dictate which exhibitors receive more attention than others. But according to Shiplet a trend for 2020 has not appeared yet and that could be because of the economy. “If the economy is strong then people are likely to spend more money and do bigger projects say, like having a house completely repainted, having a roof completely redone, not just adding on to a deck, but possibly replacing an older deck. Same thing with landscaping, they’re looking to redo landscaping projects and so they’re willing to spend the money

to have someone come out and start all over again… it’s really economy driven,” Shiplet said. Shiplet noted that due to the broad range of exhibitors at the event its hard to know what trends in design people are going for. Over the last 40 years the expo

“A lot can’t afford a new construction home right now, so they are buying homes that need to be completely renovated. So they are going and looking to see who can help them in their renovation efforts,” Shiplet said. “ We are definitely seeing a shift in population of who is coming, and because of that we try to adjust the show so it is appealing to all generations as much as possible.” Shiplet also noted that many of the folks that attend these events are into DIY and attend to learn how to do something on their own. Taking note of this trend, the expo will now offer seminars on both home and garden projects that range from deck improvements to installing solar panels and bee keeping.

Tips when planting shade trees

METRO Beautiful landscaping can add instant curb appeal to a property. But beauty isn’t the only thing that makes idyllic landscaping attractive to homeowners. Some landscaping features, such as shade trees, save homeowners money while adding aesthetic appeal. The U.S. Department of Energy notes that shading is the most cost-effective way to reduce solar heat gain in a home. Shading also cuts air conditioning costs, which tend to be expensive in areas with warm, humid climates. In fact, the DOE notes that well-planned landscapes can reduce unshaded homes’ air conditioning costs by anywhere from 15 to 50 percent. When planting shade trees, one

keep homes cool in the summer by blocking sun, and those same trees can be beneficial in winter after they shed their leaves by letting the sun in and keeping homes warm. But evergreens also can be beneficial in winter by blocking wind, potentially preventing cold air

The DOE says that deciduous trees that are between six and eight feet tall when planted will begin shading the windows of a home within a year of being planted. Depending on the species of the plant and the home, those same deciduous trees may begin shading the roof within five to 10 years of being planted. 10 plants to grow this Spring

Sarcococca Ruscifolia’s bloom time is considered to be early spring so get these in the ground as early as you can. The plant will grow to about three to four inches tall and wide. Some sunlight is needed but mostly partial shade. It is advised to keep the plant well watered and in well-drained soil.

PJM Rhododendron This rhododendron is durable yet delightful, displaying small trusses of bright lavender blooms that contrasts well with the small dark green leaves. The evergreen foliage takes on a mahogany-brown winter color and is known for its heat and cold tolerance. The plant works well as a border, mass plantings and in containers. Partial sunlight is needed for growth and the plant needs to be watered regularly every week or even more often if it’s in extreme heat or a container. The growth rate is considered slow to reach its average height of three to five feet tall, but it will likely keep growing wider. The PJM Rhododendron typically blooms in early springtime. Mediterranean Pink Heath This glorious popular shrub establishes quickly and can be used as a dense ground cover or border. The plant displays appropriate winter colors contrasting with lavenderpink flowers that last through the early spring. They are often used in wild or rock gardens which allows them to develop naturally. This plant looks good when it’s used to cascade down along retaining walls and edges of raised planters. Partial to full sunlight is needed and grows best with regular weekly watering and even more frequently if in extreme heat. The growth rate is considered moderate and its average size is one foot tall and three feet wide. The Mediterranean Pink Heath blooms in the winter and early spring.

For basic care, place in an area protected from cold and dry winds. You’ll want to start pruning and trimming the plant once it blooms. Contorted Filbert

The uniquely twisted, corkscrew branches create an unmatched sculptural effect in the landscape. Long, pendulous catkins emerge in the springtime like hanging ornaments among the newly emerging foliage. The crinkly, deeply veined foliage adds texture in the summer and the leafless shrub is among the best plants available for adding intrigue to the landscape in the winter months. Can be used as a mixed border or as a foundation plant.

Obsidian Coral Bells These black, shiny, rounded leaves hold their color all season. The compact mounding form offers many opportunities in small urban gardens. Plant in large amounts to intensify the dramatic color effect. Obsidian Coral Bells can be very striking when paired in pots with high contrast companions. Partial shade to full sunlight is needed and the plant needs to be watered regularly every week, and perhaps more if it is in extreme heat. The growth rate is considered moderate and its average size reaches 8 to 10 inches high and 16 inches wide. The blooms can reach 24 inches high. This plant particularly blooms in the summer, so planting around springtime is a good idea. Daphne Odora ‘Zuiko Nishiki’ Winter blooming, fragrant and large evergreen leaves are the features of the Daphne Odora “Zuiko Nishiki.” The plant seems to tolerate more shade but pretty resistant to the hot sun. This daphne is considered

more tender than others and needs well-drained soil. The buds of the flower will become a nice purple and the flower itself will have a gentle lavender hue. It is recommended to grow in a pot as its average height is two to five feet tall. The growing season is considered to be February and March and needs only partial sunlight and half shade. This kind of daphne seems to attract hummingbirds but is resistant to deer and rabbit. Sarcococca Ruscifolia This plant’s fragrant white flowers add a nice contrast to the evergreen foliage. Its flowers are followed by rounded, dark red fruits and looks great in a woodland setting. The

Full sunlight is needed for growth and needs to be watered two to three times a week until the plant is established. Use well-drained soil and prune when the plant is dormant in the late fall or winter. Spiders are commonly found in basements, garages, porches and other sheltered spaces. They typically come out to search for food and other insects so their presence in your home might indicate that there are other insects in your home. In Washington state, there are a few types of spiders that can cause concern for homeowners, such as the Hobo spider, Giant House spider and Yellow Sac spider.

Carpenter ants Carpenter ants prefer to make their home within the walls of your house and can do significant structural damage to your property. When the temperatures warm up, carpenter ants may come out and forage while seeking food and shelter. Bees and Wasps As the warmer weather approaches, you may see a wasp, hornet or yellow jacket queen bee that may have stayed in your walls and attics during the winter months. Now they’ll be looking for a place where they can lay eggs and establish colonies so beware of that and do your best to keep them out of your home. Make sure to treat those areas you see coming in and out as soon as you can to prevent colony creation. Try not to kill the bees as they are essential insects.

their sheer numbers and the fact that they love to be inside. The Yellow Sac spider has a rare bite that has been known to cause pain similar to a bee or wasp sting. Houseflies Houseflies are pretty much harmless but can be a nuisance as it seems like whenever somebody opens a door, they come flying in. They are often attracted to light and the only practical way to keep them out is to try and keep your doors shut as much as possible. Fleas To limit a potential flea outbreak in your home this spring, it is necessary to take care of the family pets by giving them regular baths and hygiene treatment. It is also possible for pet-free homes to get an infestation of fleas due to

outside wildlife. To get rid of them, use your basic household cleaning tools and conduct proper sanitation. Rats and Mice Rodents are not just a seasonal problem as they can be a nuisance all year long. From the house mouse to the black rat, these pests are often considered the worst type of pest that can be found in your home. To prevent this from happening, search out any possible entry points and block them as best you can. Common entry areas include ill-fitting doors, vents, roof gaps and pipes traveling through wall spaces. Make sure all sources of food are kept and stored in tight containers and store all woodpiles or similar items away from your home.

Proper pruning is all about the right tools

STATEPOINT If you are like most homeowners, you need to prune trees, shrubs, bushes and other plants in your yard from time to time. But do you know which tool is best suited for each particular job? Experts say that choosing tools wisely is key to maximizing beauty, and minimizing damage to plants. There are a few things to keep in mind as you go about selecting tools for your pruning jobs, big and small, and landscape designer Doug Scott of Redeem Your Ground in Atlanta, Ga., is sharing a few insights to get you started: • For most basic pruning around the yard, bypass or hand pruners, also known as garden or pruning shears, are go-to tools. Best for making clean cuts through living plants and tree branches, they work much like a set of heavy-duty scissors and are capable of getting into tight spots for close, precise cuts. Scott advises against a common pitfall here: the urge to save money. • Since pruning shears see so much use, it makes sense to buy

the best ones you can afford. From my experience, inexpensive models simply don’t last very long, he says. “A well-cared for, high-quality set of bypass pruners however can be a lifetime investment for the average homeowner.” • For larger branches, Scott says anvil-style shears can be a good choice, which feature one sharp blade closing against a flat, wide blade and work much like a knife cutting against a cutting board. However, he warns that they should be used selectively, as they crush plant stems more than bypass-style pruners. • When it comes to branches of more than 1/2-inch (12.7 millimeters) in diameter, loppers are the best choice. Like hand pruning tools, there are bypass loppers, which operate much like a large, long-handled set of bypass shears, while anvil-style loppers use just one cutting blade. • Bypass loppers generally cut with more precision, while anvilstyle loppers are typically capable of generating more cutting force,‚Äù Scott said.

Compost is part of the circle of life in gardens

METRO The season for fresh fruits and vegetables grown right in the backyard is upon us. Warm weather breathes life into fresh berries, tomatoes, eggplant, cucumbers, and many other delectable fruits and vegetables. Home gardens can be supplemented with delicious finds from the supermarket or farmer’s market, including melons, corn and more. The bounty of the garden can be made more abundant and fruitful with the addition of the right soil amendments. Compost is a key element of rich, nutritious soil. Scraps from items that have been grown in the garden can then be reused in the production of the compost that feeds that same garden. It’s a continuous circle of garden life. Getting started with compost is relatively easy. Homeowners should choose an outdoor space near the garden but far away from the home so that it won’t be disturbed by kids or animals. Some people opt for an open compost pile, while others choose closed bins to contain the possible smell and to camouflage the compost. A sunny spot will help the compost to develop faster, according to Good Housekeeping. The next step is to start gathering the scraps and materials that will go into the compost. Better Homes and

Gardens suggests keeping a bucket or bin in the kitchen to accumulate kitchen scraps. Here are some kitchen-related items that can go into the compost material: • Eggshells • Fruit peels • Vegetable peels and scraps • Coffee grounds • Shredded newspaper In addition to these materials, grass and plant clippings, dry leaves, bark chips, straw, and sawdust from

untreated wood can go into the pile. Avoid diseased plants, anything with animal fats, dairy products, and pet feces. A low-maintenance pile has an equal amount of brown and green plant matter in the compost plus moisture to keep the bacteria growing and eating at the right rate. Aerating the compost occasionally, or turning the bin when possible, will allow the compost to blend and work together. Compost will take a few months to form completely, says

the Planet Natural Research Center. The finished product will resemble a dark, crumbly soil that smells like fresh earth. Compost will not only add nutrients to garden soil, but also it can help insulate plants and may prevent some weed growth. It is a good idea to start a compost pile as a free source of nutrition for plants and a method to reduce food waste in an environmentally sound way.

When planted to the south of the home, deciduous trees can screen between 70 and 90 percent of the summer sun while still allowing residents to feel summer breezes. • Consider sun angles. Homeowners who want to shade their homes from low afternoon sun angles should plant trees with crowns that are lower to the ground on the west side of their homes. • Cool air before it reaches your home. Shrubs and groundcover plants can be planted to cool air before it reaches a home. Evergreen trees Planting evergreens to block wind is known as “windbreaking,” which

lowers the wind chill near a home. Wind also can be used to cool a home in summer. But these benefits can only be realized when evergreens are strategically planted. • Location, location, location: The DOE advises planting evergreen trees to the north and northwest of the home to stop wind. In addition, to get the most bang for your windbreaking buck, the distance between the home and windbreak should be two to five times the height of the mature tree. • Plant trees on either side of the house. Planting trees on either side of the house will direct cooling winds toward the home in the summer. Shade trees can help homeowners reduce their energy bills, making them valuable and attractive additions to any landscape.

while the topsoil and compost provide the grass with valuable nutrients. If the low spots are not especially deep, this mixture can be applied without removing the grass. However, before filling in holes when addressing spots that are deeper than two or three inches, remove the grass then place it back in place once the hole has been filled. To dig up the grass, put the blade of the shovel at the outside of the low spot before sliding it under about two or three inches so you do not upset the grass roots. Spread the top dressing Once the holes have been filled and the grass has been placed back on the ground (if it

was removed), spread the top dressing mix with a shovel. The mix should be spread evenly with the back of the bow rake at a depth of no more than half an inch. Make sure the mix is worked into the low spots and that it’s not completely covering the grass, as that will suffocate the lawn. If necessary, use the push broom to work the mix into the soil. Water the lawn Finally, water the lawn to help the top dressing settle into the grass. If necessary, repeat the process of applying top dressing and watering until the lawn is even and has returned to full strength. An uneven lawn is an eyesore and potentially harmful. But fixing an uneven lawn is simple once homeowners discover and address what’s behind the issue.

Use the right cleaning products Avoid excessive water to clean wood floors, and select soaps that are specially designed for wood flooring. Consult with the flooring manufacturer for a list of detergents that are safe to use. With proper care, hardwood flooring can survive rain, snow and cold weather.
