Ticket Sales Fund Educational Opportunities Soroptimist International is a global volunteer organization that provides women and girls with access to the education and training they need to achieve economic empowerment. Here in Sequim, the funds we raise at the Gala Garden Show help fuel that effort. This is the story of how your admission fee helped change a life: Soroptimist International of Sequim (SIS) understands that one of the most effective means to promote women in our society is through education, which is why we fund numerous scholarships and awards. As a past recipient of the Continuing Education Scholarship, I know first-hand the difference that these programs make. I came from a very low-income family which had no means to pay for a college education. I began working in my late teens before I even finished high school. Over the years I built a small landscaping business, often participating in the Gala Garden Show. Then, in my late twenties, I decided to take the leap and finish my GED and apply for college. I still had very little means to fund such a venture and knew that I would be heavily reliant on scholarships. I applied for and received the Continuing Education Scholarship from Soroptimist International of Sequim twice while attending university. The awards helped me cover costs for tuition and school materials, and, at times, basic living essentials. But the scholarship wasn’t just about the money, it was also an award of confidence from a community that believed in me and what I was doing, and it meant the world to me. After graduating with a degree in Environmental Sciences, I returned to Sequim. I now operate my landscape construction business with a clearer focus on

Master Gardeners for helping our garden and children grow.

Jennifer’s Garden Tip Tall Raised Beds! If you have been gardening in short raised beds constructed of treated lumber, consider building them up to a comfortable height so you can eliminate bending down all the time. Add a wide top sill for sitting on while gardening. You can also consider using higher quality materials, like corrugated steel and locally sourced Western Red-Cedar.

Special Guest Speaker is a Top Selling Author with a Vocation, Hobby and Passion for Horticulture The Gala Garden Show’s keynote speaker is Christina Pfeiffer, co-author of top selling “Pacific Northwest Month-by-Month Gardening,” Pfeiffer will discuss the essential tasks we need to complete in the garden month by month. Her approach is to highlight sustainable and practical techniques that create greater results for less effort. She believes if garden practices are in sync with what nature is already doing, then gardening is a journey and not a battle. Christina Pfeiffer has always been a gardener. As part of a gardening family. she helped her dad grow vegetables, mowed the lawn and generally spent time outdoors. She took a horticulture elective twice in high school. When the elms in her neighborhood in Michigan were hit by Dutch Elm disease, that sparked a further interest in trees and arboriculture. She led landscape management efforts at the Holden Arboreteum and the Washington Park Arboretum. Pfeiffer has taught courses in pruning, arboriculture, and landscape management at Edmonds and South Seattle Community Colleges, and at the University of Washington. She holds degrees in horticulture from Michigan State and the University of Washington, and is an ISA Certified Arborist. In private life, Pfeiffer has a plot at a community garden where she grows things she likes to eat — particularly asparagus and strawberries. She also raises leeks and artichokes because they have blooms that are good for attracting pollinating insects. Christina Pfeiffer can find the good in anything in the garden--ground beetles and daddy long legs eat slug eggs, moles show that your garden has plenty of good worms and their tunnels help aerate your garden. She says “Capture nature’s energy — place your plants so they can grow with the least intervention.” Soroptimist Gala Garden Show 2020

Great Gardening Tips from the Experts

Christina Pfeiffer: Use a coarse organic mulch (like partially decomposed leaves, chunky plant parts and wood chips) to develop a healthy drought resistant garden. Chris Barton: Take advantage of our mild climate on the Peninsula and plant so there is always something growing or in bloom 12 months of the year. Bob Cain: In Sequim’s warm dry summers, drip irrigation of vegetables is more efficient and will cause less disease issues as well as reducing your water bill. Jan Danford: The time to think about where you would like more spring color is in the spring just as bulb season is finishing. To prevent digging where you already have spring bulbs, mark new planting areas with an attractive river rock. Keith Dekker: To keep from over-planting a new bed of shrubs, space them apart, using their mature size as a guide. You will save money, it will look better, and you will have to prune less. Susan Kalmar: Follow the three P’s: 1) Pick your plants: choose plants suited to your climate and space. 2) Plan your garden: lay out your garden ideas on paper. 3) Prepare your soil: healthy well drained soil is essential to success. Jeanette Stehr-Green: Use nets to protect blueberries and strawberries against birds. Install netting two to three weeks before the fruit matures.
