HEALTHY LIVING
Causes of Peripheral Neuropathy
Many people who suffer from Peripheral Neuropathy are given the diagnosis and then told that it is “idiopathic” which basically means that the cause of the neuropathy is unknown. These people are told to learn to live with it and the symptoms associated with neuropathy are debilitating for some and almost always severe. The most common symptoms are numbness, tingling, burning pain, sharp pains, and a feeling like one has a rolled up sock in their shoes. People describe feeling like they are walking on barnacles or shards of glass when they walk on carpet in their bare feet. Neuropathy is a serious chronic condition that usually progresses over time. Research and clinical experience has shown that the causes are many. In some cases it is caused by severe degeneration in the low back causing a crushing effect on the sciatic nerve roots which often causes neuropathic symptoms in the feet. If the degeneration is in the neck then it can manifest as carpal tunnel syndrome type
symptoms like numbness, tingling, and pain in the hands and wrists. Another cause of peripheral neuropathy is metabolic in nature. Often it is a blood sugar problem such that the nerves are not getting the fuel needed to function properly. Brain and nerve tissue need glucose to survive and function well and if this supply is compromised then there are health problems and often it manifests as peripheral neuropathy because the largest nerves in the human body go to the feet. Another metabolic cause can be a side effect of statin medications which are cholesterol lowering medications. Autoimmune induced inflammation contributes to neuropathic symptoms also. Peripheral Neuropathy is a complex and debilitating disorder. Typically neuropathy is caused by a combination of both neurologic and metabolic deficits and to get good results one must treat both. 2011 NEW YEAR . NEW YOU. Learning the difference between cold and flu can save your life
Stacey Blakney
Redmond Jazzercise
Now that the holiday season is behind us, let’s refocus on our health and fitness programs. The quartet of eating well, getting enough sleep, moving our bodies daily and having a positive attitude is a winning combination. When we incorporate fitness into our daily activities, we are that much more vital and energetic. Here are some ideas to help turn daily tasks into opportunities to keep yourself in good shape: • Walk to work: Or at least in from the parking lot. Weather permitting, park as far away from your company’s door as possible. You’ll burn more calories than usual and the fresh air will calm your mind in preparation for your day. • Chat on the go: Join a friend for a “walk and talk” in a park or at your group fitness exercise class. Afterwards, enjoy a healthy snack of nuts and dried fruit. • Dance: Whether you go to a club, shimmy around your living room alone, or attend a dance fitness class, you will be getting a great workout. • “Housercise:” Housework can be a great form of exercise. Sweeping, mopping and vacuuming floors tones your obliques and your abs. Turn on your favorite music, sing along
and have some fun. • Work outdoors: Shoveling the driveway, raking leaves or mowing the lawn all use muscles in your back, shoulders, arms, obliques, abs and legs. Both you and your yard will look fabulous and you’ll feel great knowing you did it all by yourself. Stacey Blakney is the owner of Redmond Jazzercise. Classes are held at the Old Redmond Schoolhouse Community Center, 16600 NE 80th Street. For classes in Redmond, visit Jazzercise.com or call (425) 898-1561.

Knowing the difference between a cold and the flu can save your life. While colds are uncomfortable and make you miserable, flu or influenza can be life-threatening. A cold starts gradually with sniffles. You may have a mild cough, bronchial pain, a sore throat and stuffy nose. Colds rarely cause fevers. Influenza or flu, like a cold, affects the respiratory system. You feel lousy and exhausted. Flu begins suddenly. Your chest may hurt, your body will probably ache and you may have a cough, headache or chills. Influenza fevers last three days or more. Over-the-counter medications such as Tylenol, ibuprofen, naproxen and decongestants sometimes help. You’ll recover sooner if you rest. Call in sick to work. Let someone else grocery shop. Don’t go to your child’s basketball game. Seek medical help if you have difficulty breathing, swallowing and a persistent cough, congestion or headache or can’t keep fluids down. If you don’t feel better within three days, become dehydrated or your breathing becomes labored, seek medical attention immediately. The best way to fight infections is to boost your immune
system with a nutritious diet and regular exercise. People who exercise still catch bugs and colds but their symptoms are usually less severe and they recover more rapidly. Washing your hands often protects you from both colds and flu. Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue if you sneeze or cough and teach your children to do the same. No tissue? Sneeze into the crook of your arm. Preventing the flu is easier than curing it. Flu vaccinations are still widely available. Get one! If you have any questions about your cold or flu symptoms or any other health questions, call the Evergreen Healthline at 425-899-3000 or go to www.evergreenhospital.org.
