ceremony. Then enjoy the party atmosphere straight after. Feeling talented? Compete in Poacher’s Got Talent for the chance to perform at the closing ceremony. Thrill Seeker? All week you can head down to the fun fair to have a go on rides such as
the dodgems and the twister. Come down throughout the evening or even during the day! There is something for everyone here at Poacher, so get stuck in, have lots of fun and make lots of new friends while you do it! You won’t regret it.

Plenty of badges to collect at Poacher
by Sarah Paget I challenge you to find a Scout or Guide who doesn’t like badges. This year Poacher can help with our natural need to collect badges, but first you have to work for them. The three badges are; Poacher Challenge, CPR and Global Development Village Badge. The Poacher Challenge has been designed to encourage everyone
to get out and explore everything the jamboree has to offer. There are three levels so no one misses out. Whether you are a participant, camp maker or an adult you can earn the Poacher Challenge badge. To take part, drop into the International tent on Village Green and collect your challenge card. Then head out and complete the challenges
Hundreds of activities to do by Hamish Arnold Poacher operates a unique Activity Ticketing system, which helps to prevent long queues, and being in the zone with the same people everyday. That way you know which of these activities you are going to be doing, where it takes place and at what time your session starts. The ticketing system’s flexibility allows you to plan out the activities in which you wish to take
part throughout the week. Whilst a ticket will guarantee you access to an activity at a specific time, participants are still able to queue up for any activity without a ticket filling in spaces as they become available. Each subcamp will have an Activity HQ which will allow you to collect new tickets or swap/ share with your friends.

before returning before 5pm on Friday to have your challenge card approved and receive your badge. Challenges will encourage you to visit different areas through the headings of; Entertainment, Offsite, Participate, Relax, Adventure, Help and Creative. You can also earn badges by visiting the Village Green. Take some time to learn to
save a life and learn CPR with the Lives Team. Once you have mastered this life changing skill you will be presented with your CPR badge. The Global Development Village are also offering a badge for paying them a visit. Whilst in GDV you will explore issues which affect the world around us. By discovering issues from Conflict
and Health to Poverty and Science and Technology all those who visit GDV will be raising their own and others awareness of these issues thorough fun activities. These activities are designed to inspire you to make a difference. Once you have explored the key areas you will be awarded the Global Development Village Badge.
Kicking off the week in style by Jake Dixon Get ready to kickstart you week at Poacher with a bang at the Opening Ceremony! Join everyone down in the Main Arena for the formal opening of Poacher 2017. Before the big event you need to head down to your Subcamp HQ, with your group, for around 19:00 where the parade into the main arena will begin. Follow your Subcamp team and make as much noise as you can to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Poacher. Remember to wear your Poacher neckers and Poacher tops if you have them; if not wear your Scout or Guide uniform and show off all those badges. The ceremony will begin at 19:30 and will be jam packed with video montages and some awesome acts. You might even see yourself on the big screen as you enter the arena, so remember to have a big smile on your face. The opening ceremony will finish at 22:00 so you may want to take a coat with you in case it rains. Most of all, remember to have fun!
Step back in time to 1977
To celebrate 40 years of Poacher International Jamboree we have reproduced the first newspaper which was printed 40 years ago. It is amazing to think how the first ever newspaper team managed to print a newspaper before the time of computers. We hope you enjoy it. Pull-out begins over the page.

How to tie a friendship knot
by Jake Dixon 1. Begin with the two ends of your necker straight out in front of you 2. Cross the right-hand end over the left to make an ‘X’ 3. Fold the end which went over the top, back under the other end . 4. Fold this end back on itself to create a loop 5. There should now be one loops and a loose end so that it looks a bit like an ‘elephants trunk’. 6. Take the trunk all the way underneath so that it comes up through the ‘V’ 7. Tuck the trunk through the right loop 8. Pull the two ends to tighten the knot and adjust it if necessary 9. You now have a Friendship Knot!
Even more adventures at lunchtime by Jake Dixon
During your week here at Poacher there are a whole host of activities for you to try, from morning to evening. They don’t even stop at lunchtime! Starting at 13:00 in the Main Arena, there will be a different display taking place each day. Collect your packed lunch from your
subcamp and get to the arena early for the best vantage point. Get ready for the thunder of hooves and the clash of wood splintering on steel on Sunday, with the Medieval Jousting Display. The brave medieval knights will provide a thrilling medieval spectacle showing themselves in all their
glory. You will have to mind your head on Monday as the Birds of Prey Display sees magnificent birds flying free around the arena, with the return of Derek Tindall showcasing the natural behaviour of his birds. Hear the roar of the motorcycle engines in Tuesday’s IMPS
Motorcycle Display Team routine. Expect suspense, danger and unmissable excitement. Keep an eye out for the youngest performer in the team - who is only 5 years old! Look up to the sky on Wednesday and you’ll see the Red Devils Parachute Display
Team freefalling into the camp in spectacular style. The Red Devils are the official parachute display team of The Parachute Regiment and the British Army. See the Lincolnshire Emergency Services demonstrate their rescue skills during a full emergency rescue scenario on Thursday. Viewers will be
allowed into the main arena for this display – please follow all directions and sit in the defined areas. Ending the week in style, Friday will see the East Coast Freestyle Motocross Display Team perform breath taking stunts over 30ft in the air. There will be a second display at 3pm.

Meet the friendly team behind the Daily Arrow
Hi, I’m David and I’m the newspaper team leader for Daily Arrow. Poacher is my first international camp and I am looking forward to having a fun-filled week hearing about all your stories. I have been involved in Scouting since the age of 12 and have been a Scout, Explorer, Explorer leader and I am now a Beaver leader in Sheffield where I have lived for almost two years. I studied journalism at the University of Sheffield and since 2012 I have worked as a reporter at a busy weekly newspaper, the Newark Advertiser, which is based 22 miles from here.
Hi, I’m Sarah. This will be my first Poacher, but ninth Jamboree! I am a Cub Scout Leader from Leicestershire. Some of this week you will see me out and about interviewing you on the activities and the rest of the time I will be in our office helping David to edit and place the pages for our daily newspaper. My favourite part of jamboree is seeing the event unfold, listening to and reading all the reports of adventures had, new experiences taken advantage of and international friendships made.
Hello! My name is Holly and I am very excited to be part of the newspaper team for Poacher 2017! I attended Poacher 2013 as a Young Leader, so I’m looking forward to seeing this year’s Jamboree from a different perspective. I’ve been involved in Scout Media for the last five years reporting on Group, District and County events in Leicestershire. Last year I was part of the Newspaper team at EIJ 2016, and I can’t wait to do it all over again! I’m a Beaver Leader for a Scout group in York, so I naturally gravitate towards crafts and glitter.
Hi, I’m Jake and I’ve been a Scout in the Lowestoft District for 11 years. Poacher 2017 will be my eighth Jamboree and the second as staff, both on the newspaper team (you may have read some of my articles at EIJ2016!). Scouting has given me loads of opportunities; I have completed my Bronze and Silver Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards and I’m working towards my Gold DofE alongside the Queen’s Scout Award. I am also excited to be part of a group of Suffolk Scouts who are completing the Explorer Belt by travelling to Poland in 2018.
I’m Abigail McFarlane (my middle name should be Wanderlust). Scouting since the age of eight, I am now a young leader for 1st Worcester Navajo Scout Troop. I caught the jamboree bug last year whilst working on the newspaper team for Essex International Jamboree. I met some amazing friends and learnt a lot about the media side of Scouting. Aside from Scouting, I love to travel. I’m most looking forward to exploring the Global Development Village at Poacher.
I’m Hamish, I’m 18 and I’m from Essex. This is my first time at Poacher, and I’m really looking forward to meeting new people and having fun, while contributing to the newspaper. I’ve been involved in Scouting has always been a huge part of my life. I was lucky enough to be selected as one of 52 Scouts and Guides from my county attend the World Scout Jamboree two years ago in Japan. Since then I have wanted to get involved with Jamborees as a member of staff so that the participants enjoy it as much as I did in Japan.
Hi, I’m James and this is my fifth international Jamboree. I have been part of the staff team at three international jamborees and was part of the newspaper team at EIJ 2016. Essex was a big learning curve for me and I am hoping to use what I learnt at Poacher. I have been an assistant Scout leader at 5th St Ives, Cambridgeshire, and was a young leader before that for four years. I am looking forward to being part of the newspaper team at Poacher 2017 and going out and meeting lots of new people.
Hey all and welcome to Poacher 2017! I’m Rachel and have been running the Poacher Social Media for the last two and a bit years! I’ve been answering all your queries and questions! I’m super excited to be here and share all activities that you will all be doing to the world. Watch out for me walking around with the selfie frame!! Make sure that you like us on Facebook- Poacher International Jamboree, follow us on Twitter and Instagram @Poacher2017 and subscribe to us on YouTube on Poacher 2017!
