From the Desk of the Chief executive Officer

Happy New Year! Looking Forward to 2016…

JOYSE BANISTER Chief Executive Off icer 3828 South Emerson Ave. Indianapolis, IN 46203 317-788-0107 poac@poac.org

I love the holidays…I love the lights, the excitement, the gatherings, the shopping, and even the crowds and traffic at the stores! I also love the time to reflect on the year behind us and the New Year beginning. At the POA Office in 2015, we made some major adjustments and advancements to every department…whew it has been somewhat stressful but the results are amazing for the future! Changing software is a time consuming process. We have changed software in four departments at the same time! With that said, we can or will be able to soon retrieve much more information than we have been able to relating to registrations and show data. I am very pleased with the process and the ongoing testing in each department. I am also thrilled with our membership for their understanding of this process too and their patience through all of it. Now for 2016…we are already gearing up for the POA National Convention in Minnesota February 25-28th. Judges and staff are being hired for the National Congress in Tulsa July 7-15, as well as for the International Futurities and Sale October 3-8 in Des Moines IA. The Eastern Classic will be in August for 2016 in Harriman TN, the Central Classic is in June in Winona, MN, and the West World in once again in Longmont CO in July. Make plans now to attend these special National events for POAC. I am working on a newsletter for all POA Members starting in 2016 that will be sent our via e-mail monthly…”Spot On” will be a brief but informative newsletter that will give you reminders and special news that will supplement the bi-monthly POA Magazine. Be sure that we have your most current e-mail address on file here at the POAC National Office. Call Stacey here at the office if you want to update or check on your e-mail address. Thanks to all POA Members that renewed their memberships for 2016 before the end of 2015…you will receive a free calendar with your membership card and rule book supplement in late January. Ronnie Martin from Missouri provided the wonderful photos for this calendar. His original photographs for this calendar will be auctioned at the National Convention next month…be sure to find your favorite and bid on it in Minnesota!!! Thanks Ronnie for making this happen for POAC! Until next time, hug your ponies and your kids…

Youth News

A Fall Full of Fun Adventures

By Abby Kelts This fall we’ve had some pretty wild adventures. This fall several of our youth and three of our club grandmas attended the Intended Horsemanship Clinic presented by Dave Shumpert. His daughters Bailey and Chancey also attended, but didn’t ride. Bailey helped and coached, while Chancey and her friend from school had a concession stand. My sister Maggie, Cameron Andrews, and I all attended as youth and Peggy Lough (President of our club) attended and rode also. My grandmother, Julie Stone, as well as Tammie Wick (Secretary of our club) attended and helped our youth members (some of their grandchildren) with the horses. My dad, Eric Kelts, drove our truck and trailer to the clinic which is a rare thing for him to do. We had a great time learning more, becoming better riders, and earning a new respect for our horses, but every fun story has a twist. Once the clinic was over, several of the people that attended the clinic 12

decided to go on a trail ride, including Dave and Doreen Shumpert, Jack Mauck (who hosted the clinic on his property), and myself. The trail ride started out fun with amazing views, but about halfway through the trail ride my horse, Rough n Tuff Pizzazz (ZZ), began rearing up on his hind legs. I was amazed that I managed to stay in the saddle and on my horse. ZZ reared several times before Dave Shumpert traded me horses, but unfortunately he was riding a not-verybroke three-year-old gelding. since I couldn’t ride Dave’s horse, Doreen decided that she would walk with me on a short cut back to Jack Mauck’s ranch. Or so we thought. . . . . We began the long trudge back to the ranch on foot as the others continued on the trail. Not even five minutes later Doreen comes to an abrupt stop. Less than two seconds later, a five foot rattlesnake slithers out from under a sagebrush. We immediately turned the horses and ourselves in the opposite direction. As we continued walking Doreen said something that I still laugh when I think - POA January 2016 -

about. “That thing must have been the grandmother of all rattlesnakes! It was huge! I don’t know how, but I just knew we were gonna run into one. It’s like my sixth sense. I just get this feeling that a rattlesnake is near.” Well, weren’t we glad for that! We continued our walk up the hill. About half way up the hill, Jack Mauck and Dave Shumpert came to the rescue leading an extra horse. Once they reached us, Jack traded me the threeyear-old gelding for his wife’ s horse. I climbed onto the brown horse’s back and we headed back up with Doreen riding her horse. On the way back up to the ranch Dave and Jack told me to come up with some crazy elaborate story to brag to all my friends about, but sometimes the truth makes just as good a story as something that popped out of a horseman’s mouth. --Our picture shows Maggie Kelts, me and Cameron Andrews riding our ponies at the clinic in Briggsdale, CO.

Texas POAC 4-H Essay Pony Winner

One of the lofty goals of the Texas Pony of the Americas Club is to award a POA pony to a well deserving Texas 4-H member each year when a donation pony is available. In 2015, Spencer Livestock, LLC., of Chickasha, OK, donated Unexpected Romance, a 2-Year-old filly by Pal Calvacade, to the Texas POAC 4-H Essay Program. Fifteen incredible 4-H’ers applied to win the pony this year, said Texas POAC Vice President Julie Hinz, who serves and the chairman of the essay pony committee, as well as club manager of the Silver Spurs 4-H Club of Ellis County. “Each applicant was so deserving of a pony that the essay committee lamented that there were not 15 ponies to give away! These 4-H’ers went above and beyond on their applications with some beautiful artwork on their creative section as well as very

nicely written essays,” said Hinz. But Hinz said that one essay really stood out to everyone on the committee. Texas POAC is proud to award

this year’s pony to Ruth Cartwright of the Horse and Rider 4-H Club of Hardin County. In addition to a horse project, Ruth participates in dog training, poultry, rabbits, meat

- POA January 2016 -

goat, dairy goat and entrepreneurship. She enjoys playing piano, guitar, and violin. In fact her musical talents are what set her apart in her application. For her creative section, she wrote and recorded an original song titled “Dear Pony.” Ruth’s siblings Nathanial and Esther also wrote supportive letters explaining their intent to care and love the pony as well. Texas POAC believes this POA filly will have a wonderful future and family to love her. Applications and information on this program as well as other Pony of the Americas events are available on the club website www. texaspoa.com. --Pictured: Texas POAC VP Julie Hinz, 4-H essay winner Ruth Cartwright, her siblings Esther and Nathanial, and parents Hilary and Stephen.

The Tale of Wisconsin’s Pony Princess: Elsa Urban, 2016 Tiny Tot Princess This past November, the Wisconsin POA Club held its annual year end awards banquet at the amazing Ostoff Resort. I love going to that place, it is the best! By the time November comes I’m already missing all of my horse show friends and I can’t wait to swim and then swim some more! While my mom went to some (boring to me) meetings I got to hang out will everyone at the pool. And you know what else we got to do? We got to play kickball outside because it was sooo nice out! Even our moms and dads played! Usually we have snow by now, but winter is being really nice to us here in Wisconsin this year. Another special part of the day was taking part in the WPOAC royalty interviews. Jackie Pertzborn, who is super-cool, leads the club’s royalty program. She does an amazing job organizing interviews for the royalty participants each year, and even sets up special events like radio and TV interviews, nursing home visits, and royalty rides for us. This year I interviewed to become the club’s tiny tot princess. People that know me know that I’m NEVER quiet, so I talked the judges’ ears off during the entire eight minutes I had with them. Too bad the interview was timed, I could have kept talking. Imagine that. Anyway, back to the banquet. After all of the (again, boring to me) meetings, and the swimming, and the kickball game, our club all got together in a really big room

16

to eat ICE CREAM SUNDAES! Well, we had an awesome meal too, but the sundaes were really the best part (and let’s not forget the kiddie cocktails either.) While we ate we got to watch a movie that starred all of us kids! Alison Marx did a superb job putting this masterpiece together. We all loved to see ourselves up on the big screen. So then onto the awards presentation... first we all got our participation awards. Those of us who attended 50% or more of the WPOAC shows this year each received an embroidered fuzzy blanket. My mom tried to steal mine. Infact I hear she was going to order

- POA January 2016 -

one for herself... I’m keeping mine all for me. As usual, Alison and Leah Brix did a great job picking out the year end awards for everyone. I got an embroidered jacket with my name and my pony’s name on it and a super-big trophy - so did my other leadline friends. The bigger kids all got special prizes too. A bunch got saddle bags, bridle bags, tack, or other horse equipment. I’m so glad that my mom took me to all the shows this year so I could attend the banquet. I bet all the other kids feel the same way too. We love you moms and dads!

So, the royalty thing. This was THE BEST part of the weekend. During the banquet we had a special royalty presentation. This is where the outgoing 2015 royalty crown the incoming 2016 royalty. I was soooo nervous and excited. Me and a bunch of my friends all interviewed for the honor of being crowned as royalty. No matter who won I was going to be excited for them. First the queen and king were announced. Congratulations to my friends Tori Opelt and Warren Haldeman! And then they crowned the Princess and Prince. Congratulations to my Sara Durham and Matthew Brix! And then it was time to crown the Tiny Tot Princess and Prince. I was so nervous! And then, they called my name! I jumped up and down and ran to the front of the room. The crown was kind of big and it fell over my eyes. But I could still look through the sparkling jewels just fine. Everyone thought it was pretty funny, like I had a big, jeweled mask on or something. Yeah, I have a little head. And then I found out that my good friend Zachary Magnus won Tiny Tot Prince! Zach was at Disney so couldn’t attend the banquet, but did his interview over the phone. I can’t wait to do all of the fun royalty things with all of my friends this year. We’re already planning on taking our ponies to participate in the Midwest Horse Fair in Madison, WI in April. And thank you to the special Royalty sponsors too! You guys rock! Our sponsors donate a bag of royal feed for our royal ponies, as well as a stall for each of us at the Wisconsin futurity show! I included a couple of pictures from the banquet. One is of the

awesome bunch of 2016 royalty kids, and one of course of yours truly with the Queen and Princess. I can’t wait to see what the 2016 horse show season holds. It’s going to be a long winter, but mom’s been buying me new show clothes already so I can at least dress up once a week in them, put on my princess crown and

sash, and smile in the mirror! Spring, and horse show season, will be here before we know it! Love to all my pony friends, Elsa (Wisconsin POAC 2016 Tiny Tot Princess)

POAC National Board of Directors POAC National Board Meeting (Unofficial until approved at February 2016 Board Meeting) September 28, 2015 Lake St. Louis, MO President Diana Peaton opened the meeting at 9:10am CST with the following present: Scott Shingleton, IN; Carol Davidson, OR; Janette Arends, CO; David Brewer, TN; Karen Meyer, MN; Dawn Walther, IL; Judy Katzenberger, WI; Beverly Tabor, MD; Kathy McKenzie, OK; Ken Tearman, IN; and Kristen Fears, TX. All directors present. Approval of the July 2015 POAC National Board of Directors Meeting Minutes – Ken Tearman made a motion to approve the minutes as printed in the POA Magazine. Janette Arends seconded the motion. Discussion. Vote: Unanimous. Motion Passed. CEO Report – Joyse Banister reported on the following topics: • Show Department – Kelly has been working closely with the programmers to get the new show software to perform as needed to pull yearly point tabulations and enter the 2015 show results. This has been very time consuming because one fix leads to another problem. Kelly has about 82 shows in the system to-date but will be putting them in fast and furious once the software is ready. Judge renewals are going out this week with an updated test prepared by the Judges Committee Chairman. Kelly is also able to process ROMs at this point unless they need 2015 points to qualify. • Registration Department – Vicci is at 4 weeks for processing at this busy time in the office. We are still working through “bugs” in the new registration program, but overall this new program has been great for the office. The older POAs with historical data in the new program have been difficult to merge within the new program but the office is working through it. • Accounting Department – Stacey has worked hard since June to get Peachtree converted to QuickBooks. She re-entered everything since January 1, 2015 and is current on her daily work. She has been working closely with the accountants to re-enter the budgets and produce reports for the Board that are helpful and meaningful. This is still an ongoing project. • POA Magazine – Elizabeth continues to do an excellent job of producing the POA Magazine and works very well with the staff and members. • POAC has a new promotional ad coming out in the National Livestock Pedigree Council bi-annual booklet this fall. This booklet will be distributed to over 22,000 FFA youth and advisors across the country. This was a $500 expense budgeted through Promo and Marketing, and will be great exposure for POAC! • I have given you a three year futurity comparison for entries and payouts. This should be a helpful tool when deciding what to do with futurity and sale locations and the continuance of certain classes for future futurity 42

events. Our major events are making a profit and that is good…other breeds have commented that they wish they had what we have…we must be doing something right! We still have a ways to go with the new software programs to have them paid for, but this is something that POAC could no longer avoid. Even though it has been quite stressful for my staff, it is a process that will be better once completed and make the office more efficient. Treasurers Report – Beverly Tabor gave her financial report to the board and handed out event-specific financials for review. This will be filed subject to audit. Eric Reichert of the Alliant Energy Center briefly met with the Board and gave a presentation on the Alliant Energy Center in Madison Wisconsin. Committee Reports – Congress – Joyse Banister reported that the Congress Show made over a $20,000 profit this year and we are already looking at ways to bring the profit line up for 2016. Many of the specialty events are already sponsored for next year, and we will begin the process of hiring judges very soon. Futurity – The futurity numbers are very similar to 2014 and the sponsorships have been very strong this year which will help the payouts. Sale – Even though it is a smaller sale this year, the quality is high for the ponies selling. The arena will convert to a sale ring on Friday afternoon once the futurity is done. Convention 2016 – Karen Meyer has been working on a revised Convention schedule for the 2017 POAC National Convention in Bloomington, MN. The theme is “POA at MOA”…looking to be a great time! Rules Committee – • Page 103 Rule 105. Unanimous. favor: Tabor, Shingleton, Meyer, McKenzie, Fears, Arends, Brewer, Tearman, Katzenberger, and Walther. Opposed was Davidson. Motion Passed. • Rule 96, Page 92 General Performance Rules E… Change to read: E. Children in the 9 & Under age group are prohibited from exhibiting stallions in any class. Leadline 6 & Under exhibitors are prohibited from showing stallions of any age in Leadline Showmanship. However, the Show Committee may allow, at their discretion, stallions 2 years and older to be shown in Leadline Horsemanship, Leadline Trail, Leadline Costume, and Leadline Games. Director Walther made a motion to accept this change. Director Katzenberger seconded the motion. Voting in favor: Tabor, Shingleton, Meyer, McKenzie, Fears, Arends, Brewer, Tearman, Katzenberger, and Walther. Opposed was Davidson. Motion Passed. • Ranch Pleasure Proposal A. This class is a pattern class that is judged on the pony’s ability to work each part of the pattern correctly and efficiently with a free forward motion. The look should be that of a natural-moving pony heading out to get a job done. Ponies in this class should look like they are soft to ride so that riders would want to sit on them for 8 to 10 hours working on a ranch. The rider should have light contact, and the pony should not be shown with a full drape of the reins. 1. Walk: The pony should have a four-beat gait, with a level top line and a relaxed appearance, yet is bright and attentive. 2. Trot: At the trot, the pony’s motion should seem effortless and efficient. As in all gaits, this is a groundcovering gait. This pony is confident, yet still soft in his motion. He is flat with his knee and hock and has some cushion in his pastern. His expression is bright and alert. 3. Extended Trot: At the extended trot, the pony has an obvious lengthening to his stride with an increase in pace. This pony is still smooth but appears to have more length with less effort being exerted. Riders may post the extended trot, stand in the stirrups with or without holding the horn, or sit the gait. 4. Lope: This is a natural, three-beat gait, displaying forward motion. At the lope, the pony has a relaxed, yet alert and confidant appearance, with a level top line or above. 5. Extended Lope: At the extended lope, a pony has an obvious lengthening of his stride and an increase in his pace, without going into an all-out gallop. 6. Lead Changes: Riders may complete a simple or flying lead change, which ever best suits the pony’s skill level. 7. 360: Make a steady, efficient turn. 8. Back: The pony should back in a straight line and should be soft in the bridle, not gaping his mouth or bracing. 9. Penalties: Exhibitors showing ponies with unnaturally slow gaits should be heavily penalized. B. Tack and Attire: Jeweled or sparkly show attire is

NOT to be given preference over suitable working attire. Working attire is a long-sleeved western shirt with a collar, jeans, western boots, and a western hat or approved safety helmet. Vest, chaps, and chinks are optional. Saddles and bridles with silver are acceptable but are not to be given preference over clean working saddle and bridles. C. Manes and Tails: Banded manes are allowed, with NO preference over natural or roached manes. Tail extensions are allowed but are discouraged for this class. Director Tabor made a motion to accept the Ranch Horse Pleasure proposal as an optional class at all levels, with this class being pointed in two divisions (18 & Under, 19 & Over) for National Year-End Awards and for individual class points toward ROM Ranch Horse Pleasure. This class will not count toward any other Year End or High Point Awards. Shingleton seconded motion. Discussion. Voting in favor: Fears, Arends, McKenzie, Davidson, Tearman, Tabor, Walther, Katzenberger, Brewer, and Meyer. Shingleton was opposed. Motion passed. Director Meyer made a motion to allow this event (two classes) to be judged by non-POA carded judges in a separate arena if the show management prefers to run the show in this manner. Director Brewer seconded the motion. Discussion. Voting in favor: Tabor, Meyer, Fears, Arends, Tearman, Walther, Katzenburger, and Brewer. Opposed were McKenzie, Shingleton, and Davidson. Motion passed. Brewer and Arends will co-sponsor this National Year End Award for 18&U and 19&Over in 2016.

• Rule 101, page 96: Add: B. In all leadline classes,

a halter must be worn underneath the bridle. The leadline must be attached to the halter. Director Brewer made the motion to accept this addition and Director Shingleton seconded the motion. Discussion. Voting in Favor: Arends, McKenzie, Davidson, Tearman, Tabor, Walther, Katzenberger, Brewer, Meyer, and Shingleton. Fears was opposed. Motion passed. • POAC Special Needs National Year End Award – This would be open to any age special needs person. Events can include horse shows, therapy riding, and recorded time at home on horseback, anything that they do with a registered POA. Name, address, phone number, person submitting application should be submitted to the National POAC along with a story on the nominee and what they do or the time they spend with a POA. One photo may also be included with the nomination. Stories will be evaluated by a separate panel of judges and the award will be presented at the POA National Convention. Omer and Jeanette Krueger, MT, will sponsor this award for ten years, starting in 2016. Director Arends made the motion to accept this proposal. Director Davidson seconded the motion. Discussion. Unanimous. Motion passed. • Page 85 in the current POAC Handbook, the word “Adult” was accidentally omitted from Pleasure Driving. The Board directed the National POAC to add this word back into the Handbook. - POA January 2016 43
