Spending Time

TOGETHER With work, school, homework, after school activities, friends and more, there are countless activities that compete for time on the family calendar. Family time, however, can serve as an escape from the demands and deadlines of daily life, and is paramount in building strong relationships. Family time offers many benefits, including building confidence, creating a stronger emotional bond between family members, improving communication skills, better performance in school and reduced behavioral issues, as well as providing an opportunity to make memories built on fun, laughter and togetherness.

5 IMPORTANT BENEFITS OF FAMILY TIME

January / February 2017 Pocono Family Magazine Š | 7

1. FAMILY BONDING Spending time partaking in everyday family leisure activities has been associated with greater emotional bonding within families. Both "core" leisure activities, such as playing a board game, watching television, gardening or playing outdoors and "balance" activities, which require a greater investment of planning, time and money, such as a family vacation or trip to an amusement park or sporting event, can have a big impact on the overall health of a family, according to research published by the National Council on Family Relations. Simply making it a habit to display interest in the well-being of your family members can lead to a willingness to share problems and build mutual respect between parents and children.

2. ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE Children whose parents spend time with them and take an interest in their education tend to do better in school and complete higher levels of education than those whose parents spent their time at home pursuing their own hobbies, according to a study published on familyfacts.org. Providing essential guidance through studying and assisting with homework, as well as incorporating educational games, can provide children a positive influence, lead to emotional well-being and help them strive for higher levels of educational success as they grow.

3. COMMUNICATION SKILLS Children learn how to behave and communicate by watching their parents interact with each other and others. Family bonding time is a way to model expected behaviors, and spending time together as a family can help parents relate more to their children and open the lines of communication. Spending a few minutes together once everyone is home for the day, whether for dinner or a scheduled family "meeting," can help families learn to listen to, trust and understand one another, and build appropriate behaviors. 8 | Pocono Family Magazine Š January / February 2017

4. RISKY BEHAVIOR On average, adolescents who communicate and spend more time with their families tend to exhibit lower levels of aggression and antisocial behavior than peers with less involved parents, according to familyfacts.org. A closer family relationship has also been linked to reductions in acts of violence, delinquent behavior, substance abuse and tobacco use. Communication and spending time together can help relieve feelings of anxiety or anger and reduce urges to participate in risky behaviors.

5. MAKING MEMORIES One of the most important benefits of spending time together is also one of the simplest: creating memories that will last a lifetime. Whether it's playing a game together, attending an event, going on vacation or just sitting in the living room or around the table talking and laughing, positive memories are beloved possessions that give family members a sense of belonging and can help reinforce the importance of family. Simple Ways to

ENJOY MORE

FAMILY TIME Skillfully balancing an entire family's demands from school, sports, activities and careers leaves little down time, but keeping family values front and center may be easier than you think when you make a commitment to carving out meaningful moments to share.

Bond and bake together. There's a little baker in everyone. After all, who can help but "woo-hoo" when you pull fresh cupcakes out of the oven? Take a little time to embrace your inner Doughboy, turn your kitchen into a fun zone and savor all the moments with your family. One easy way to get started is with Pillsbury(tm) Purely Simple(tm) baking and frosting mixes, which use simple ingredients and contain no colors, preservatives or artificial flavors, providing a delicious homemade taste. They're the perfect mixes to challenge your family to enjoy a kitchen full of laughter, anticipation and the delightful aroma of baked goods fresh from the oven.

&

Unplug from the digital world. Today's technology-ridden world makes it easy for families to be present but not engaged. When you create a technology-free zone, you eliminate distractions so you can keep the focus on each other. Dedicate time every week to spend as a family without the use of TV, tablets, computers and phones.

Share family stories. Reminiscing about special family moments is an essential part of keeping those memories alive. Showcasing old photo albums is a great way to share fun and nostalgic memories, which can help bring your family closer together. Whether it was a trip to the mountains or visiting a nearby museum, discussing and reliving these memorable moments can evoke fond memories and a willingness to create new ones. Set a day each week for family night. It's easy to get caught up in a busy schedule, which is why consciously setting aside family time is essential. Once it's set, you may be tempted to turn the open night at home into an invitation to catch up on housework or even just relax. Avoid the temptation and instead look for fun ways to spend that time as a family. Start a puzzle or play a board game. Initiate a DIY project for the house, spend time baking or cooking a meal, or simply sit together and talk about what's happening in the lives of those who matter most. Feed backyard birds this season for the greater, global good When you fill your bird feeders and put fresh water in the birdbath this season, you'll definitely be giving your feathered friends a helping hand. But you could also be serving the greater good! Take note of the birds that visit your yard, and you'll be ready to participate in the Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC), a fourday annual event during which thousands of people around the world record information about the species of birds they see. The information backyard bird-watchers gather assists scientists in better understanding the movement of species around the globe, how well different species are - or aren't - doing and how factors like climate change are affecting bird populations everywhere. And when the bird count is over, you'll still enjoy a yard filled with the pleasing colors and sounds of wild birds.

Birds are important "We enjoy birdwatching and feeding birds because they brighten our backyards and entertain us with their antics, especially during long winters," says Richard Cole, cofounder of Cole's Wild Bird Products. "But birds also play an important role in maintaining environmental balance around the world. They pollinate plants, scatter seeds so new plants can grow, help control insect populations and recycle nutrients back into the soil. It's critical for us to have a greater understanding of how bird species are doing around the world, and to do our part to help take care of them." Bird populations are so diverse, large and widespread that it would be virtually impossible for scientists to gather all the data they need without help from backyard bird enthusiasts who participate in the GBBC. The information gathered help scientists identify species whose numbers are decreasing or increasing, changes in range or migratory patterns and more. Fluctuations in bird populations are often the earliest signs of greater environmental changes.

What you can do Founded in 1998, and co-sponsored by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, the National Audubon Society and Bird Studies Canada, the next Great Backyard Bird Count will be Feb. 17-20, 2017. You can start preparing to participate by taking steps now to make your own backyard an oasis for birds. • Start by offering a variety of feeders. Different species prefer different styles of feeders. Tube feeders are versatile and appeal to a wide range of bird species. They can also handle large (think sunflower) or small seeds (like petite mixes) equally well. Some birds prefer to cling to feeders while dining, rather than perch, so use a versatile Mesh feeder; or try a Bowl feeder, perfect for serving suet in kibble form, dried mealworms and fresh fruit. You can find a variety of feeders from Cole's. Be sure to keep all feeders clean and in good condition to help prevent disease and injury.

• Serve a variety of birdfeed. In winter, seeds with a high fat or oil content are best for birds, so offer black oil sunflower seeds, niger, raw peanuts and suet. To attract the greatest variety of birds, try Cole's Blue Ribbon Blend, which incorporates black oil sunflower seeds, sunflower meats, white proso millet and cracked corn. Special Feeder is a high-energy blend that also attracts large numbers of birds, with the perfect mixture of black oil sunflower, sunflower meats, black stripe, raw peanuts, safflower and pecans.

Birds also need (and love) suet, Cole's offers no-melt suet cakes, specialty suets and a seed and suet mix, Nutberry Suet, to help ensure birds get the fat stores they need to weather winter.

• Fill every feeder with quality food. Birds won't be satisfied with birdfeed that contains cheap fillers, and they won't get the nutrition they need. Think of it as the difference between serving your family fresh veggies instead of fast food. Serve birdfeed that contains quality ingredients and is free of chemicals or other toxins that could be harmful to birds. Cole's formulates all its feed to attract birds, and uses only natural, top-quality seeds. Their products contain no fillers, preservatives, mineral oils or pesticides. Be sure to also offer birds plenty of fresh water; it can be very difficult for them to find unfrozen water sources in winter. By feeding backyard birds and participating in the Great Backyard Bird Count, you can be counted on to help protect the wellbeing of wild bird populations. What's more, the work you do prepping your yard for the count will benefit you - and your feathered friends - throughout the year. ‘Tis the season to

PREPARE for winter driving

As we approach the winter months we would like to remind motorists that cars need seasonal checkups to maintain safety and maximize operational efficiency. Regular maintenance and seasonal checkups can also help prevent unexpected repair costs in the future. We recommend that motorists use a simple checklist to determine their vehicle’s fall and winter maintenance needs. Many of the items on the list can be inspected by a car owner in less than an hour, but others should be performed by a certified technician. Motorists can identify reliable, high-quality repair facilities with certified technicians by looking for the AAA Approved Auto Repair sign. These facilities must meet and maintain 14 | Pocono Family Magazine © November January / February 2017 / December 2016

high professional standards for customer service, technician training, tools, equipment, warranties and cleanliness. Nearby shops can be located at AAA.com/repair. One of the first steps is to prepare a Winter Car Care Checklist...

Battery & Charging System – Have the battery

and charging system tested by a trained technician. A fully charged battery in good condition is required to start an engine in cold weather. AAA members can request a visit from a AAA Mobile Battery Service technician who will test their battery and replace it on-site, if necessary. AAA Approved Auto Repair facilities can also test and replace weak batteries.

Battery Cables & Terminals – Make sure the

battery terminals and cable ends are free from corrosion, and the connections are tight.

Drive Belts – Inspect the underside of accessory

drive belts for cracks or fraying. Many newer multi-rib “serpentine” belts are made of materials that do not show obvious signs of wear; replace these belts at 60,000-mile intervals.

Engine Hoses – Inspect cooling system hoses for leaks,

cracks or loose clamps. Also, squeeze the hoses and replace any that are brittle or excessively spongy feeling

Tire Type & Tread – In areas with heavy winter

weather, installing snow tires on all four wheels will provide the best winter traction. All-season tires work well in light to moderate snow conditions, provided they have adequate tread depth. Replace any tire that has less than 3/32-inches of tread. Uneven tire wear can indicate alignment, wheel balance or suspension problems that must be addressed to prevent further tire damage.

Tire Pressure – Check tire inflation pressure more

frequently in fall and winter. As the average temperature drops, so will tire pressures – typically by 1 PSI for every 10 degrees Fahrenheit. The proper tire pressure levels can be in the owner’s manual or on a sticker typically located on the driver’s side door jamb. Also, check the spare. Courtesy AAA North Penn

now, sleet, and freezing rain. Black ice, slippery sidewalks, and snowed-in driveways. It sure is the most wonderful time of the year! Winter weather in the Poconos is nothing short of beautiful; however, there’s something much less exciting about snow when it’s causing trouble. Believe it or not, thousands of people are injured every year while shoveling snow. Between heart attacks and broken bones, shoveling can be dangerous business. Luckily, there are several precautions you can take to help reduce the risk of injury. First, it may be time to upgrade your shovel. While large, steel shovels are durable and can scoop more snow, they also make for heavy lifting. Opt for a lightweight shovel with a sturdy handle. Shovels even come in ergonomic form these days. The z-shaped handle is designed to help ease stress on the lower back. Push shovels are also a popular choice as they eliminate lifting completely.

"Snow, sleet, and freezing rain. Black ice, slippery sidewalks, and snowed-in driveways. It sure is the most wonderful time of the year!"

When a Nor’easter dumps overwhelming amounts of snow across the area, do yourself a favor and shovel often. I think we can agree that it’s much easier to shovel three inches of snow at a time than three feet. If frequent snow removal isn’t an option, shovel in layers. Do not try to move large amounts of snow with one scoop. And remember, avoid walking or driving on snow prior to shoveling, as packed down snow is much more difficult to remove. PennDOT has a few helpful hints up its sleeve, too. PennDOT asks that you move snow to the right of your driveway (when standing at your house, looking down the driveway). Then, clear an area along the road to the left of the driveway. When the plow truck goes by, more snow will be unloaded here instead of in your driveway. And don’t forget about the mailbox. Clear your mailbox of snow and ensure it’s securely supported. Reflective tape will also make your mailbox more visible to plow truck drivers.

Now let’s talk ice. It’s a pain in the butt (literally), and choosing a way to melt it can be tricky, not to mention confusing. The two go-to types of ice melt are sodium chloride (rock salt) and calcium chloride. But which should you use? While sodium chloride is inexpensive and easily accessible, it can eat through concrete and is harmful to pets and the environment. Yep, it’ll kill everything from grass to that beautiful rose bush you planted last spring. Rock salt is also relatively ineffective in subzero temperatures. When a Polar Vortex rolls in, reach for calcium chloride instead. Calcium chloride melts ice fast and works well in low temperatures. But take your shoes off at the door - calcium chloride can damage carpet, tile, and will even corrode metal. Additionally, over application can harm the environment. This year, consider purchasing a roof rake. This simple tool can save you a lot of headaches over the course of a winter. As snow builds up on roofs it can cause leaks and even do some serious damage. With a roof rake you’ll be able to remove snow from your roof while keeping your feet on the ground. Feel free to use it to knock down icicles, too! All finished? Treat yourself to a cup of hot cocoa; you’ve earned it. One last piece of advice - take a moment to enjoy the season and throw a snowball or two. And remember, always lift with your knees!

Getting cozy this winter? You’ll definitely want to make use of your fireplace. But remember, you’ll need to take extra precautions to keep everybody and everything safe. The use of a safety screen is a must -- in fact, they’re required on all fireplaces manufactured after January 1, 2015 -- so if your fireplace didn’t come with one or if it is not in good shape, get a retrofit safety screen. Even with a screen, it is also crucial that you give your fireplace clearance, keeping little ones, pets and flammables away. Tips to

Curb Muscle Loss as You Age As the population of Americans over age 55 soars toward 70 million over the next decade, more Americans are searching beyond avoiding wrinkles and fine lines for tips, foods and products that will help them live the lives they desire well into their advanced years -- and this includes muscle maintenance.

“Muscle loss can really take its toll. Even simple movements like opening a jar of pickles or gardening, become more difficult,” said medical director of NYU Langone’s Preston Robert Tisch Center for Men’s Health, Dr. Steven Lamm. “When you have less muscle mass, the muscles you have must work harder. It can be exhausting.”

As people age past 30, they can lose up to eight percent of their muscle mass each decade. Finding a way to maintain muscle through the years has been one of the more elusive parts of the healthy aging quest.

Per Dr. Lamm, there are a few easy steps that can keep your muscles healthy as you age -- and new research shows there may even finally be a way to curb muscle loss associated with aging.

20 | Pocono Family Magazine © January / February 2017

Be Active One of the most effective ways to keep muscles in tip-top shape is to be active. Even quick exercises done regularly can make a huge difference in your muscle health. “Try the long route when you’re taking the dog for a walk or take the stairs instead of the escalator. Staying active can also maintain joint health,” said Dr. Lamm.

Feed Your Muscles Most people know that protein is a building block for muscle, yet don’t get enough of it. Sleep also feeds muscle growth and recovery. “I tell my patients to aim for a regular sleep schedule of eight or nine hours each night to promote optimal muscle mass, heart health and brain health,” said Dr. Lamm.

Muscle maintenance is a key to healthy aging.

Try a Supplement You cannot halt aging, but new research shows you may be able to curb the muscle loss that comes with getting older. A new clinical study showed that daily supplementation with the super antioxidant, Pycnogenol (pic-noj-en-all), improved muscle function and endurance and reduced some of the symptoms accompanying muscle loss. “I’ve recommended Pycnogenol to my patients for years as a natural extract for healthy aging, and as an important building block of wellness. This research builds on those findings,” says Dr. Lamm.

Good Health

includes

HEALTHY STATE OF MIND By: Deborah M. Cofer

The terms depressed, blue or blah are most frequently used, by today’s women, to describe their multitasking and often emotionally overwhelming lifestyles. While it is normal to occasionally feel over-extended or temporarily saddened by the events that affect our lives, far too many women fail to recognize that it is not normal for despondent feelings to last for longer than two weeks. Feelings of extreme sadness that last for weeks or months are often a sign that there are some mental health challenges that should not be overlooked or minimized. The reality, that many people fail to realize, is feelings of depression can effectively be treated with medication, therapy or by engaging in regular down-time that every woman needs from time-to-time. While women traditionally seek help for the more “socially acceptable” symptoms of emotional distress such as fatigue, headaches and sleeplessness other symptoms of emotional exhaustion, brought on by the rigors of daily life (e.g., single-parenting, stressful relationships, inadequate housing and limited finances are viewed more as “moral” or “social” issues that frequently generate unhealthy perceptions from healthcare providers and others that stigmatize and victimize rather than open doors that enable women to proactively seek and receive the help they need. Consequently, feelings of sadness associated with these types of emotionally depleting circumstances are either blatantly or subliminally overlooked or totally dismissed as legitimate contributors that impact on long-

term physical and emotional well-being. So instead of seeking help, women tend to just blame themselves for “not being strong enough” as they struggle in silence to maintain their emotional stability and well-being. But whatever the case may be and despite the circumstances or perceptions, prolonged feelings of sadness are all too real and should not be taken lightly or overlooked with respect to their long-term effect on mental health outcomes. In reality, moral and social issues are often the driving force that direct women onto paths that produce consequences that have dire and often long-term affects on both them and their families.

"prolonged feelings of sadness are all too real and should not be taken lightly or overlooked" With a better understanding of both the biological and sociological causes of depression and how the brain’s neurotransmitters work, new anti-depressants are continuously being developed and added to the pharmaceutical arsenal used to treat depression and other types of psychological abnormalities. In conjunction with various types of therapy, new treatments spell relief for many who suffer silently from the effects of chronic depression, as well as other forms of treatable mental disorders, such as SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder), which many women experience during the dreary winter months and holidays. January / February 2017 Pocono Family Magazine © | 23

Although depression is more common in older people, it is not part of the normal process of aging. For many reasons, aging brings about an array of changes that older people experience at a much more frequent rate than their younger counterparts (e.g., death of a spouse, child or other close family member, significant change in income, retirement, illness, etc.). Most holidays are also a difficult time for many people for different reasons. So don’t hesitate to reach out if you or someone you love is experiencing bouts of depression. Summon the courage to stand up and take action by getting the help you need to safeguard your mental health, particularly if four or more of the following symptoms exist longer than two weeks:

1.

Difficulty concentrating, remembering or making decisions;

7.

Loss of interest or pleasure in ordinary, previously enjoyed activities, including sex;

8.

Persistent sadness, anxiety or feelings of emptiness;

9.

Recurring aches and pains that don’t respond to treatment;

10.

Sleep problems, insomnia, oversleeping, waking up constantly during the night; Recurring thoughts of death or

11. suicide, creating a suicide plan or attempt.

2.

Decreased energy, fatigue or moving at a slower pace than normal;

3.

Excessive crying;

4.

Eating problems, loss of appetite or weight gain;

5.

Feelings of guilt, worthlessness or helplessness;

6.

Feelings of hopelessness, pessimism or irritability;

Depression is a disease that often begins with emotional dis-ease. It is not a health condition to be ashamed of. I recovered and so can you! If you suspect that you or a loved one may be experiencing depression or any other type of mental illness, you can take control of your life by choosing to move beyond all negative stereotypes. But getting the help you need to regain control of your health and your life is both up to you and on you. Speak to your doctor or healthcare provider about what you or a loved one are feeling and ask for a referral to a therapist or mental health service that will work with you to develop a plan-of-action to help you strategically and effectively combat this serious attack on your mental/emotional well-being.

New Year’s Resolutions for a Healthier You

26 | Pocono Family Magazine © January / February 2017

New Year’s resolutions can be a double-edged sword. While many of us feel inspired to make goals to improve our health, happiness and wellbeing, we often find the changes hard to sustain, and sometimes end up reverting back to old practices.

Customized treatment plans based on your individual lifestyle!

BucciVision.com 1-877-DR-BUCCI

Check out these tips for starting and maintaining a healthier lifestyle.

• Baby Steps Many people start a new year hoping to improve their fitness routines and eating habits, and quickly become discouraged when results aren’t immediate. Instead of cancelling your new gym membership and opting for a box of chocolates by Valentine’s Day, set achievable and realistic goals to stay on track. If losing weight is the objective, aim for 10 pounds instead of 50. If you succeed at losing the first 10, celebrate and make a new goal. Instead of adopting an extreme diet, cut back on one snack a day or incorporate a smoothie as a healthy meal replacement. Use ingredients like fresh fruit, dark leafy greens, flax or chia seeds -- even savory vegetables like beets -- the possibilities are endless.

Powering your body with snacks like low-fat yogurt topped with granola, fresh hummus and whole-grain pita, or an apple and peanut butter, will carry your body through a workout and help you feel fuller longer. To make delicious homemade nut butter, throw three cups of roasted, unsalted peanuts or cashews into a high-powered blender like a Vitamix machine and blend for a minute or so. The result is a gooey, good-for-you treat that will provide ample energy for healthy pursuits. While grocery shopping, stick to the outer perimeter of the store and pick up nutrient-rich and versatile ingredients like avocados, chickpeas, bananas, nuts and spinach, that can stand alone or be mixed into everything from healthy salads to frozen desserts.

• Indulge Your Sweet Tooth Being healthy and eating whole foods doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice your sweet tooth. Before you plunge into a tub of cookie dough, consider other ways to curb cravings. Make your own, customized whole-food ice cream without artificial colors, flavors or preservatives using a blender. Varieties like apple pie and spiced strawberry will delight without guilt. Or try a simple sorbet: blend two peeled oranges, two tablespoons sugar and four cups of ice. Use a blender with special settings for this purpose, such as the Vitamix Professional Series 750. Its Frozen Dessert program, one of the machine’s five pre-programmed settings, allows you to make an easy, healthy dessert in minutes. Looking for something that feels even more decadent? Find recipes like chocolate hazelnut spread and more at vitamix.com/Find-Recipes. For a healthier new year, focus on small, attainable goals, and use whole foods to get creative with your diet. School is back in session, and the germs exchanged in crowded classrooms can make their way back to the home. It’s the time of year when sales of cold and flu medications soar – and those medications can find their way to family pets. There are lots of ingredients to keep track of, so review the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center’s library of cold and flu medication toxicities and treatments!

COUGH DROPS Pets will often suck down the cough drops their owners have handy. For the most part, cough drops aren’t as serious as some other flu and cold medications, but there are a few things to watch out for.

PSEUDOEPHEDRINE While cold and flu medications commonly contain multiple ingredients, pseudoephedrine is one that often causes serious problems.

DEXTROMETHORPHAN Dextromethorphan is a common ingredient in over-thecounter cold, congestion, and flu medications, and pets who ingest it may need veterinary care.

smart swaps to make baking & cooking healthier

Creamy sauces, cookies, casseroles and cakes - as temperatures drop, it's natural to crave favorite comfort foods. However, it's easy to overindulge on rich dishes and decadent desserts, especially if you're hosting a gathering of friends and family. How can you enjoy amazing foods while bumping up the health quotient? "Remember, when you're cooking or baking, you're in control. With a few smart ingredient substitutions and food swaps, you and your guests can enjoy favorite dishes and get more vitamins and nutrients," says Lyssie Lakatos. Lyssie Lakatos and Tammy Lakatos Shames, both registered dietitians, are known as the "The Nutrition Twins." Together, they share their favorite strategies for cooking healthier, including clever ingredient swaps you won't even detect in the finished dish.

32 | Pocono Family Magazine Š January / February 2017

Eggs: When baking, eggs are a common ingredient,

but not all eggs are created equal. Opt for Eggland's Best eggs, locally-sourced eggs that come from hens fed an allvegetarian diet consisting of healthy grains, canola oil and supplements like alfalfa and vitamin E. As a result, they have 10 times more vitamin E, five times more vitamin D, three times more vitamin B12, two times more omega-3s, 38 percent more lutein and 25 percent less saturated fat compared to ordinary eggs.

Sour cream: Swap full-fat sour cream for plain Greek

yogurt in recipes, dips, sauces and garnishes. Plain Greek yogurt tastes surprisingly similar to sour cream but offers higher levels of protein.

Butter in cooking: Cooking smart means choosing healthier fats and using them in moderation. Instead of butter, try olive oil. While 1 tablespoon of butter has about 7 grams of saturated fat, olive oil only has 2 grams of saturated fat.

January / February 2017 Pocono Family Magazine Š | 33

Butter in baking: Oil can cause baked goods

to get soggy, so a better butter alternative is applesauce or pumpkin puree for half of the called-for amount. The addition of applesauce or pumpkin puree reduces the fat content while keeping baked goods moist and delicious.

Bacon: Bacon adds flavor to any dish, but a ton of fat.

To get the flavor-boost of bacon without the excess fat, try using Canadian bacon, lean prosciutto or turkey bacon. Whether beside scrambled eggs for breakfast or crumbled into a casserole, these tasty alternatives will satisfy.

Salt: Use less salt and add herbs to recipes to get

succulent flavor. Whether fresh or dried, herbs satisfy the palate and add beauty of any dish. Have fun mixing and matching herbs to customize a recipe perfectly to your taste.

Sugar: All those amazing glazes and desserts require

sugar, but you need not rely solely on refined white sugar. For baked goods, lessen sugar and add vanilla or cinnamon to intensify sweetness. For glazes, try alternatives like maple syrup or fruit purees.

Breading: Classic comfort foods often require breading. For a healthy alternative to traditional white bread crumbs, try whole-grain bread crumbs, rolled oats or crushed bran cereal (or a mixture of them all.)

Flour: Rather than using entirely all-purpose refined

white flour for recipes, try swapping half of the amount with whole-wheat flour. You'll still get the desired consistency out of baked goods, but you'll be eating more whole grains.

Lettuce: Iceberg lettuce is a popular option for salads

and recipes, but to get more important vitamins (and more flavor), use arugula, collard greens, spinach, kale or watercress instead. Insider tip: try buying a bag of mixed greens to enjoy a variety of nutrient-dense alternatives. Want to start your day out with an indulgent, satisfying breakfast that features some of these smart cooking ideas? This recipe serves as a great breakfast and has vitaminpacked Eggland's Best Eggs, sweet potatoes and turkey bacon. For more recipes visit www.egglandsbest.com.

• When sweet potatoes are finished, slice them in half lengthwise and let them cool. • Scoop a bit of 'meat' out from the sweet potatoes to make room for the filling. • In a small nonstick skillet over medium heat, place two strips of turkey bacon. Cook until bacon begins to brown and crisp up. • Place a napkin on top of a small plate. When bacon is finished, place onto napkin to let grease soak out. • Rinse the skillet and place back on the burner over medium heat. • Place eggs in skillet and cook on medium-low for just a few minutes; ~3 minutes. Be sure not to overcook these eggs as they will continue cooking after removed from heat, and will be placed into the oven later on. • Break eggs into four equal parts. Place each into the hollow parts of the sweet potatoes. Sprinkle each with salt and pepper.

Smooth Way to START your day

36 | Pocono Family Magazine © January / February 2017

A

wealth of research shows that starting each morning with a nutritious breakfast delivers benefits throughout the day. If you're pressed for time or simply need to mix up your morning routine, put a fresh spin on a time-saving favorite by making a smoothie bowl. Smoothie bowls typically have a thicker consistency than traditional smoothies, and according to a recent study in the "American Journal of Clinical Nutrition," the thicker the smoothie, the more full you will feel.

"I love smoothie bowls because they are a satisfying and satiating way to get a ton of nutrition in first thing in the morning," said Carolyn Brown, a registered dietitian and nutritionist at Foodtrainers in New York City. "You can add in healthy ingredients that you might not be able to eat on a daily basis like spinach, basil, mint, cinnamon, nut butters or avocado." Brown points out that in her experience with clients, people love to eat with a spoon and find it more mentally and physically satisfying. The same goes for adding texture, such as a crunchy topping like goodnessknows snack squares. These satisfying, gluten-free snacks are crafted with the goodness of whole nuts, real fruits and toasted oats, with no artificial colors, flavors or sweeteners. Divided into four snackable squares per serving and nestled in a layer made with dark chocolate, one individual, twobite square contains only about 40 calories. Find out more about how doing a little good for yourself can go a long way at goodnessknows.com.
