WAYS TO MAKE YOUR PET FEEL LIKE

Part of the Family

t’s said that pets can be people’s best friends, but the relationships between people and their four-legged friends often run even deeper. In fact, many consider pets to be an integral part of their families.

I

From eating and playing together to matching outfits and more, consider these practical ways to make dogs and cats feel like they’re important members of your household so you can become two peas in a pod.

Play Often

Playtime is an easy (and fun) way to bond with pets, whether your furry friends prefer fetch, tug-of-war or any other game that keeps you both active. On top of the emotional benefits, it can help keep them in better physical shape – you might even be able to get a little exercise, too.

Feed Human-Grade Food

Sharing a meal with people is a common way to connect, and that same connection can be made with pets. Feeding them at the same time you sit down for a meal can create a special bond. Though it’s tempting to feed them off your plate, consider a human grade food option like Freshly Crafted from Full Moon Pet. Created for pet parents who seek homemade quality ingredients free from additives or preservatives, this fresh frozen food includes 100% human-grade ingredients like real USDA chicken breast and blueberries, meaning it looks, smells and tastes just like food you would cook in your own kitchen while providing complete nutritional benefits pets need to thrive.

With flavors including Homestead Turkey, Ranch-Raised Beef and Free-Range Chicken, these curated meals promote skin and coat health, support immune health and encourage muscle growth.

Set Up a Special Space

Just like humans, pets need a little quiet time now and then. Creating an area they can retreat to with a bed, blankets and favorite toys offers a “safe space” where they can be comfortable. Plus, it’s a perfect spot for them to nap when you’re away and the house is empty.

Schedule Regular Wellness Visits

The veterinarian’s office may not be your furry friend’s favorite hangout, but scheduling regular checkups is an important part of owning pets. A balanced, quality diet can reduce trips to the vet to just essential visits –often annually or biannually – and help your pets live happy and healthy lives.

Show Affection

Belly rubs, freshly brushed coats and simply spending time together are all effective ways to show pets your affection. Another way to share your love is to reward dogs with their favorite treats like Full Moon Chicken Jerky, which is a high-protein, meaty treat made with few ingredients, including USDA chicken breast, so you can feel good about providing your pets with a treat that tastes good and is good for them.

Take Pets on Vacation

Skip the anxiety of leaving pets behind during your next trip by letting them join in on the fun. Exploring the world together is an exciting way to bond as you can visit new places, find dog parks and discover petfriendly restaurants. If it’s your pet’s first road trip, consider a shorter excursion to ensure he or she is comfortable in the car, and make sure to bring all the essentials like food, water, bowls, bedding, toys and medications.

Wear Matching Clothes

When you’re dressed to feel your best, you’re likely to feel more confident in yourself. Provide that same feeling of satisfaction to pets by dressing them in the same clothes you plan to wear for a walk around the block or a trip to the dog park. Next time there’s a family photo session, plan to include furry friends in matching outfits so everyone can be dressed to impress.

Celebrate Special Occasions

Birthdays, “gotcha days” or holidays are perfect moments for celebrating your bond with your pets. Make the day extra special by indulging in favorites like going for a walk, heading to the dog park, gifting a new toy, enjoying specialty treats and more.

Your Pregnancy Test is Positive, Now What?

10 POCONO FAMILY MAGAZINE © JULY/AUGUST 2023

After noticing some curious symptoms, you have taken a pregnancy test and it’s positive! Your life is about to change in many exciting ways. Now that you know a baby is on the way, you aren’t sure what to do next. Here’s a list of what to do right after receiving a positive pregnancy test.

Take a second test

Unfortunately false positives happen and they can be devastating. Before you celebrate, consider taking another pregnancy test (or two) to confirm you are pregnant. A test can be taken at any time of day but the best time to take one is first thing in the morning because your urine contains the highest concentration of hcG which is the pregnancy hormone. This is the hormone that a pregnancy test detects causing a positive result.

Track your last menstrual cycle

Take a look at the calendar and figure out the date of your last period. This will help you calculate how many weeks gestation you are and when your baby is due. There are many calculators online to help you figure this out or your doctor will pinpoint your due date based on the first day of your last period when you visit the office.

Celebrate

You and your significant other are in for some big changes. Give yourself some time to get used to the idea and to celebrate that your family is growing. Many couples prefer to have time to process the idea of adding a baby to the household before they announce the news publicly.

Make a doctor appointment

Your doctor or midwife will want to see you during the first trimester. Once you have a positive pregnancy test, call and get your first appointment scheduled. During the first appointment your doctor will determine your due date, discuss your pregnancy appointment timeline and explain any medication or dietary changes that need to be made. This is a great time to ask questions and express concerns you may have. You may also hear the baby’s heartbeat or see the baby on an ultrasound.

Stop risky behaviors

If you are currently smoking or drinking alcohol, stop immediately. If you are taking prescription medication, ask your doctor if they are safe to continue. Be cautious about handling dangerous chemicals such as pesticides and harsh household cleaners. If in doubt, consult your doctor’s advice.

Stay healthy

Growing a baby is hard work. Choosing healthy meals and snacks, exercising regularly, and getting adequate rest are important to maintaining a healthy pregnancy and giving birth to a healthy child.

Do some research

Once the excitement settles, look into what your insurance benefits will cover. It is wise to start saving for additional costs and research what type of medical leave your workplace allows. You can also look into how much your insurance covers for birth and which hospital is the best choice for your family.

Decide who to tell and when

When will you announce your pregnancy? Some couples will want to immediately shout the news from the rooftops and others may choose to keep quiet about it until after the first trimester. Discuss with your partner what is right for you. Expecting a baby is an exciting time but it can be overwhelming, especially if you are expecting your first child. Take care of yourself and give yourself time to adjust to the news that a baby is on the way. Your doctor and other parents who have been through the experience are there to help. If you have questions or concerns, it never hurts to ask. Soon enough, you will be welcoming your new baby home.

Tips for Parents to Support Their Future All-Stars

Some of the fondest childhood memories for many people include practicing sports, game days and teammates turned friends. Parents hoping to provide their children with similar experiences can look to organized youth sports as a perfect outlet for expending some energy all while learning valuable life lessons like teamwork, goal-setting, humbly celebrating victories and bouncing back from defeat.

In fact, sports can provide a multitude of benefits for young athletes. From improving physical health to gaining valuable social and leadership skills, team-oriented activities give kids a way to explore their own interests and have a little fun.

Put your future all-stars on a path to success with these tips for youth sports parents.

Encourage Kids to Try Multiple Sports

If your little ones are first-time athletes, signing up for multiple sports exposes them to a variety of options. They can navigate their own interests and discover their unique talents through each sport’s different challenges. For example, some require more endurance, like soccer and basketball, while others call on coordination and balance, such as dance or baseball. Once they’ve experienced a few activities, allowing them to choose which sports to continue participating in provides a sense of independence.

Outfit Athletes with the Proper Gear

Each sport and activity comes with equipment requirements, ranging from simple (a ball and a net) to complex (helmets, pads, bases and more). Proper footwear is a must, whether

it’s cleats for outdoor events or shoes with ankle support for a sport like basketball. Remember, safety comes first, which is why your children may need helmets, shin guards, knee pads or other protective equipment. Be sure to talk to coaches or league coordinators about what equipment is provided and what you may need to purchase (or borrow).

Familiarize Yourself with the Sports

While you don’t need to be a hall of fame coach to enjoy your kids’ events, understanding the rules and regulations can help you be a more informed parent. Plus, it shows your little athletes you’re taking an interest in their activities when you can discuss the game together. If you’re able, one of the best ways to learn is to attend a local professional, semiprofessional, college or even high school game with your children so everyone can get in on the fun together.

Make Postgame Cleanup a Breeze

Many people don’t know sweat can lead to bacteria, which secrete acids with a distinct, stinky odor. Just think about all the bacteria living in a gym bag after your children’s big games. Behind a team of bacteria-fighting scientists, Lysol Labs is hitting the road to visit youth sporting events across the country on a mission to educate parents and their young athletes that bacteria can be the source of their stinky clothes.

“A single stinky sock can contain more than 8 million bacteria,” said Callum Couser, Reckitt Research and Development Operations Manager, Hygiene. “This program was created to show parents the number of bacteria in their kids’ clothes and how to eliminate 99.9% of the odor-causing bacteria on stinky clothes during the summer sports season.”

You can strike out stink with a laundry additive like Lysol Laundry Sanitizer, which kills 99.9% of odor-causing bacteria on laundry when used as directed and helps simplify your postgame routine. Available in 41-ounce and 90-ounce containers in a variety of scents and formats, it contains 0% bleach and even works in cold water. Find more information at Lysol.com.

love their pets

MORE THAN PEOPLE

If you're like many pet parents, your pet means the world to you and is an important part of your family. And you're not alone. A new survey found that nearly one in six respondents tell their pet they love them more often than they tell their partner. This Pet Parent Pulse Survey, commissioned by MetLife Pet Insurance, also found that eight in 10 pet parents would rather spend time with their pet than go on a first date.

YOUR PET IS FAMILY

While those statistics may sound surprising at first, they may seem less so when you also consider that the Pet Parent Pulse Survey also found most pet parents (78%) said they consider their pet to be their child, with 69% also stating that they love their pet more than some of their family members. Millennials (25- to 40-year-olds), in particular, are more likely than older pet parents to prefer spending their free time with their pet instead of with people (83% of millennials, compared to 71% of pet parents aged 57 and up).

But considering your pet to be a part of the family means caring for them that way, too. Pet parents are likely to put their pet's needs and wants high on their to-do list, including making sure their pet is well-fed, feeling loved, and that their healthcare needs are looked after. Beyond regular checkups to ensure their pet is up-to-date on vaccinations and other preventive measures that safeguard their well-being, pet parenting also includes going to a veterinarian in an emergency and in some unfortunate cases, funding major health procedures or surgeries.

In light of current economic uncertainties, though, over half of pet parents (54%) worry about being able to care for their pet in the future, according to additional research from MetLife Pet Insurance. While caring for a pet can be a significant financial obligation over the course of many years, many pet parents would say that the love and companionship they receive from their pet makes the cost well worth it - but taking action today can help prevent additional financial stress in the future.

How you can protect your relationship with your pet - and your wallet

Just as you may have other types of insurance, like health insurance for your two-legged family members, pet insurance can help pet parents give their furry family members the care they need to live a happy and healthy life. Accidents happen, but when preventative measures are taken, pet parents can ensure their animal companion is protected from the unexpected.

For example, MetLife Pet Insurance can be a flexible, supportive resource available as you care for your pet through all the ups and downs of their life. Through advantages like 24/7 telehealth access in their mobile app (may not be available in all states), as well as grief counseling for members of a pet's family, MetLife Pet Insurance goes beyond basic pet healthcare to provide support to you during all times of need. Opting into this offering can also give you financial peace of mind as an innovative, affordable tool to help defend your finances against unexpected expenses like vet bills.

"One of the greatest acts of love a pet parent can undertake is to ensure the health and safety of their pet," said Brian Jorgensen, head of MetLife Pet Insurance. "The good news is, we provide pet parents with the support they need to care for their petwithout breaking the bank."

Just as your relationship with your pet is unique, you can find customizable coverage that's designed to fit your budget and your pet's particular needs for less than you may think. To get a free quote, visit MetLifePetInsurance.com.

Taking good care of your pet today will help you be able to enjoy that special bond with them for many years to come.

Finding motivation on a Monday can be tough. However, there's no greater motivator to get up and moving like having your canine companion by your side to help you take on Monday - and every day of the week - like a pro. Active dogs and their humans take challenges head-on, and when you consider the ways in which you'll both benefit from being active together, and getting the fine-tuned nutrition necessary to help keep active dogs strong and energized, there's no limit to what you can accomplish together.

Tennis pro Venus Williams knows prioritizing her dog's health through exercise is important to his longevity. "My dog Harry is such a huge part of my life. My dream is for him to have the longest life possible," said Williams. "When I go to practice, he goes to practice. If I go to the gym, Harry goes to the gym."

To help pet parents get outside and move with their four-legged friends, Williams has teamed up with Purina Pro Plan Sport to take Monday motivation to a whole new level with the "Monday Like a Pro" Challenge.

Every Monday through May 21, Venus and a group of content creators and award-winning athlete pros will issue weekly challenges for pet parents to log active minutes with their dogs. If you want to join the challenge but don't know where to start, check out these four, fun ways to get moving with your dog.

Take a hike

Hiking is a great way to challenge yourself and your dog. Hikes can be more challenging than your typical walk around the block because of the varying terrain, especially if a hiking path has rolling hills. A new environment allows your dog to experience new smells, sights and sounds, which aids in their mental stimulation.

Go to the beach

If you live near the ocean, take your dog to the beach. The beach is a veritable playground of enriching experiences for both dogs and pet parents alike. You can jog along the shore together, play fetch in shallow water or go for a swim. Even if you don't live near the ocean, you can do these same activities at a lake or river.

Play sports

If you play sports or want to get back into playing a sport, your pup can help you train. Take them to the tennis court, work on your serve and have your pooch fetch and return the ball to you. If you have a soccer ball, play keep away with your dog or set them up in a goal and try to score.

Work on agility

Find an agility course at a local dog park or take an agility training course. Your dog will learn how to weave through obstacles, run through tunnels and jump over bars, teaching them new tricks and obedience. Meanwhile, you'll get a workout running alongside them on the course and issuing commands along the way.

Once you add regular exercise to your routine, ensure that both of you get the proper nutrition to fuel your workouts. "Fueling my body with optimal nutrition is one of the most important things that I focus on, not just before my matches, but also on a daily basis," said Williams. "That's something I want for my dog Harry as well. With Pro Plan Sport, I know he's getting the nutrition he needs so he can stick by me on all our adventures."

To help fuel your highly active, athletic dog, join the "Monday Like a Pro" Challenge. Every Monday through May 21, check out the weekly challenge and log your active minutes. One winner per week will be randomly selected to win a year's supply of Pro Plan dry dog food to experience firsthand the advanced nutrition of Pro Plan Sport offering the strength and stamina to conquer any adventure.

Joining the challenge also does good for others. For every week participants collectively log 1 million minutes, Pro Plan will donate $15,000 (up to a total donation of $150,000) to Athletes for Animals. The nonprofit organization partners with professional athletes to educate the public about responsible pet ownership, promote pet adoption, raise funds and distribute grants to support best practices in animal welfare.

Sign up now to get active, give back and be entered for a chance to win excellent nutritional food for your active dog. To learn more, visit MondayLikeAProChallenge.com.

CREATING A SUMMER

TIPS FOR UNPLUGGED FUN OF

Between school, work and entertainment, there are times when screens can seem like a pervasive part of modern life. For all the positive aspects of technology, there can also be a desire for children to have stretches of unplugged learning and participate in educational activities that do not require a screen.

Why Unplugged Learning Matters

“Unplugged learning is important to balance the screen time children may experience with other forms of learning; to promote physical activities, social interaction and creativity; and develop the essential skills that bolster them throughout their exploration and growth as individuals,” said Rurik Nackerud from KinderCare’s education team.

Summer can be an ideal time to focus on unplugged learning as it often brings a break from the traditional academic year and activities.

“We want summer to be a time when children can put down technology and connect with one another face-to-face, build important creativity skills and learn how to be social with one another without the buffer of screens,” said Khy Sline from KinderCare’s education team. “They can play, run, be immature and laugh with their friends, giggle at the silly things and find joys in those in-person interactions with one another.”

Tips for Creating Unplugged Fun as a Family

1. Get Outdoors.

Make time as a family to get outside and explore, even if it’s simply a walk around the block after dinner. Help children notice the little things like a bug on the sidewalk or the way the sun filters through tree leaves to make patterns on the ground. Ask them about the things they see and give your children the space to ask questions and work together to find the answers. This helps teach children collaborative learning skills: asking questions, sharing ideas and working together to reach an answer.

2. Read Together.

This could mean going to the library to check out new books or exploring your family’s bookshelves for old favorites. Snuggle up together for family story time. If children are old enough to read on their own, invite them to read to you or their younger siblings. Talk about the story or even act out favorite parts to help your children actively participate in story time, which may help them better understand the story’s concepts.

3. Encourage Creative Thinking.

Help children expand their ability to think creatively by working together to make a craft or project. For example, the next time a delivery box arrives at your home, encourage your children to turn it into something new using craft supplies on hand. A blanket could turn a box into a table for a pretend restaurant while some tape or glue could transform it into a rocket ship or train. When everyone’s done creating and playing, the box can be broken down for recycling. This activity can help children literally think outside of the box and apply their own unique ideas and creativity to create something new.

Taking the Stress Out of Back to School Mornings

School mornings can be stressful for both parents and kids. The morning can be very hectic with limited time to eat breakfast, get dressed, gather belongings, and get to school on time. Here are some ideas for families to lower the stress and create a smoother school morning.

Lunch solution

Packing a healthy school lunch (or multiple lunches) can take up a lot of time in the morning. Get a head start on lunch preparations by starting the evening before. “If my kitchen is clean, I feel like I am ahead of the game. Every night before going to bed I prep lunches for the next day, put away clean dishes, and reload the dishwasher.” says Kim Burnette, mother of two. By getting a head start the night before, you eliminate a big step, leaving you time for other things in the morning.

Backpack solution

After the kids have completed their homework, have them pack their backpacks up. Parents can sign permission slips, go through school papers, and gather any supplies needed for school the next day and pack them up. Does your child have their gym uniform and band instrument? When everything is ready the night before, there is less to do on school mornings.

Wardrobe solution

Check the weather the evening before school so that kids can lay out their clothing and outerwear for the next day. With the coats, hats, gloves, and boots laid out there is less scramble to find everything the next morning. Also try laying out the entire week’s clothing on Sunday. “We have a small plastic set of drawers with 5 drawers that can be purchased in the storage section at Target. We put an outfit for both of the kids in each on Sunday.” says Alicia Dafferner, mother of two from Omaha.

PREP YOURSELF

Many parents find that if they can wake up before the kids, they feel more refreshed and prepared for a productive morning. This gives them the time to take few minutes to wake up, enjoy a cup of coffee, or grab a quick shower. Mother of three, Jessi Cole, says “I find that it helps if I get up early and get myself ready before my kids get up. That way, I only have to worry about them.”

Breakfast solution

Help make breakfast healthier and quicker by planning ahead. Sherry Hoffman, mom of two boys, says “I make several breakfast options that are freezer and toaster oven friendly on the weekends that we can choose throughout the week.” Ideas for freezer-friendly breakfast items include breakfast burritos, waffles, french toast, or muffins. There are also easy to make options like whole grain cereal, yogurt with fruit and granola, or a breakfast smoothie. Many of these items can be prepared the night before to help morning go smoother.

Early to bed, early to rise

“I have noticed that it makes our mornings much smoother if my kids get enough sleep, so early bedtimes are a must.” says Hoffman. Kids who have a consistent early bedtime are more rested for an early wake up. Rested kids are in better moods and stay on task on school mornings, causing less stress and conflict in the morning.

Eliminate electronics

With limited time to be prepared for school, it is best to eliminate electronic distractions. Parents and kids need to focus on the goal, which is getting to school on time. Distractions like television, handheld devices, and video games only slow down the process. Remind kids that there will be time for electronics after school, when their chores and homework are complete.

Adjusting to a new school schedule can take awhile, but if parents do their best to prepare the night before and teach kids to do the same, the mornings will run much smoother.

Think Outside the Lunch Box

Some kids are more likely to eat their lunch if they are given a variety of foods rather than the same old thing every day. Here are some ideas to get you thinking outside the lunch box.

• Wrap it up - fill a tortilla with meat, cheese, and veggies, add your favorite dressing.

• Fill a Thermos with soup or pasta

• Send pasta or lettuce salads

• Dip it - hummus with veggies or crackers, guacamole with chips, or ranch with veggies

• Leftovers - send last night’s dinner, chicken and pizza make a great lunch

• Different sandwich - put meat and cheese on a sub sandwich instead of bread or send something unusual like peanut butter and banana (use sunbutter for a nutfree option)

• Homemade lunchables - cheese, meat, and crackers

• Kabobs - fill skewers with grapes, tomatoes, cheese cubes, or meat

• Quesadillas - they are taste great cold too

• Breakfast for lunch

Go with the Gut: Tips for promoting pet health

When four-legged friends are feeling under the weather, pet parents may feel helpless pinpointing exactly what’s wrong. Nurturing your pet’s gut health is one way to protect his or her immune system and to promote overall well-being.

Improve your pooch’s gut health with these tips from the pet experts at Solid Gold:

Recognize the Signs of a Potential Gut Health Problem

While many problems are readily apparent, gut health isn’t one of them. There may be some tell-tale signs like diarrhea or vomiting, but other symptoms like bloating or constipation may be harder to spot. Other signs of gut trouble might include fatigue, frequent licking, restlessness, changes in coat quality and luster, and weight fluctuations. Be sure to talk with your vet promptly if you observe any concerning symptoms.

Pay Attention to Ingredients

Choose a dog food with ingredients that promote gut health. For example, Solid Gold’s Hund-N-Flocken dog food is

powered by NutrientBoost, a proprietary blend of ingredients packed with protein and nutrients that help canines thrive. It features crave-worthy taste and ingredients like amino acids, probiotics and proteins that support digestion, immunity and nutrient absorption. Each bite is made with a blend of highfiber ingredients such as carrot, pumpkin and pearled barley to support digestive health.

Be Conscious of Allergens & Food Intolerance

Dogs can experience allergies just like people. Allergies that affect a dog’s skin are common, but you might also find your dog has trouble digesting certain foods, which can create inflammation and irritation in the gut. Allergy testing or an elimination diet (removing one potential allergen source at a time) can help pinpoint the problem.

Feed Probiotics to Promote Good Bacteria

Just like humans, dogs need a well-balanced microbiome. Probiotics build the microflora in your dog’s system, promoting the good bacteria that wages war on infections and harmful

bacteria when needed. Probiotics can be especially helpful if your dog is prone to diarrhea or gas, or if he or she has recently received an antibiotic treatment that may have affected the natural gut flora. You can find probiotics in the form of food or supplements like Solid Gold’s Mellow Belly Gut Health Supplement, which is made with a powerful combination of natural digestive enzymes and probiotics to aid in proper digestion. The entire collection of food and supplements are made with superfoods and probiotics to help support your pet’s immunity and get the most out of every day to keep him or her thriving.

Don’t Forget the Prebiotics

Many people are at least somewhat familiar with the role probiotics play in gut health, but not everyone knows about prebiotics. Prebiotics, which are a form of dietary fiber, function as a fertilizer or food source for probiotics, allowing helpful bacteria to multiply. Look for prebiotic treats, capsules, drops, powder and even specially formulated foods.

Manage Stress with Play and Exercise

If you’ve ever experienced digestive issues as a result of stress, you know mental and physical health go hand in hand. The same is true for dogs, so managing your dog’s stress level is an important step in helping regulate his or her gut health. Exercise is beneficial for your pet’s health in a variety of ways, including suppressing cortisol, which is an inflammatory hormone that may weaken the immune system.

Vet-Approved Tips to Help Keep Pets Safe this Summer

Extreme temperatures and booming sounds can have big impacts on pets. With record-breaking heat across much of the nation, the experts at Freshpet are helping pet parents with these tips to help keep their pets healthy and safe this summer.

Heat

Heat stroke can occur quickly in dogs. Without the ability to sweat the same way humans do, it’s important for pet parents to understand ways to cool their pets down when temperatures rise and how to avoid common mistakes to keep their pets safe.

“Just because we can manage the heat and humidity, doesn’t mean our pets can,” said Dr. Aziza Glass, Freshpet’s expert veterinarian. “Our pets are vulnerable to temperatures over 80 F. However, there are things we can do to keep our pets safe and protected from heat-related injuries and some may come as a surprise.”

 Limit time outdoors: While outdoor activities are typically recommended for pets, their inability to sweat the same way humans do can cause them to heat up quickly. Limit walks to early morning or after the sun sets and stay indoors as much as possible the rest of the day.

 Fill their water bowls: Just like humans, clean water is essential for helping pets manage the heat. Cool water can help cool down your pet’s body temperature. Moisture-rich fresh food like options from Freshpet – made with 100% farm-raised chicken, beef or fish and all-natural fruits and veggies – can also help with hydration.

 Avoid shaving your pet: While summer cuts for long-haired dogs are OK, shaving your pet can expose his or her skin to harmful sun damage and cause overheating more quickly.

24 POCONO FAMILY MAGAZINE © JULY/AUGUST 2023

Glass recommends pet parents educate themselves on how to recognize heat stroke. Heavy panting, drooling, high body temperature, increased heart rate and fatigue are some signs of heat stroke in dogs.

“If you believe your dog is having a heat stroke, bring him or her indoors immediately to help cool down,” she said. “A common mistake is putting the pet in a cold ice bath. That can actually shock the system and cause quick changes in blood pressure. Instead, soak a towel in room temperature water and wipe your dog down to start the cooling process. Afterwards, proceed immediately to your primary care veterinarian or closest emergency center.”

Fireworks

Booming sounds and crackling fireworks can send some pets into sensory overdrive. According to Glass, with an elevated ability to interpret sound frequencies audibly and physically, dogs’ sensitivities to loud noises means some celebrations can make for particularly anxious events. While some dogs hide under beds or jump fences to flee the sounds, there are ways to help make fireworks less stressful for canine companions.

 Create a calm environment: Be aware if you or your neighbors plan to launch fireworks. If so, create a space to help your dog deal with the noise. A sound machine, lavender oil on his or her collar and blankets can help.

 Remain indoors: Avoid taking your dog outside if you’re planning to view fireworks or set off your own. A dog’s first reaction may be to flee from the noise and search for a safe spot, placing him or her in more danger.

 Stay close: Pets feel less anxious when they feel safe. Make sure you or someone they feel safe with is by their side until the fireworks are over, offering comfort, treats and affection throughout the event.

HOW TO BE A PET PARENT on a Budget

26 POCONO FAMILY MAGAZINE © JULY/AUGUST 2023

Whether you are a first-time or veteran pet owner, being a pet parent can be expensive. From daily needs like food, treats and toys to medicines, the costs can add up. To help stretch your budget, the experts at Dollar General are providing cost-friendly ways to provide for your pet:

Food to Fuel Your Furry Friend

Fueling your pet with nutritious food doesn’t have to break your budget. By stocking up on options available exclusively at select retailers, you can feed your furry family member affordably. For example, Nature’s Menu is available only at Dollar General and offers dog and cat food free from artificial colors, flavors or preservatives. Their dry pet food products also include pre and probiotics to support healthy digestion, along with added vitamins, minerals and other trace nutrients and a money-back satisfaction guarantee.

Hygiene How-To

Having a pup or feline companion comes with responsibility, especially when it pertains to their cleanliness and well-being. To maintain a groomed pet, create a care tote that includes such hygiene essentials as a brush or flea comb, shampoo, nail clippers and puppy pads, which can be used as clean-up tool for both dogs and cats. Also consider using a dual-action topical treatment to help prevent fleas and ticks. Be sure to see a trusted veterinarian for annual checkups and other needs.

Paw-some Accessories

All those accessories that enhance your pet’s days and nights don’t have to be costly. Consider new water and food bowls, a collar and a bed for a good night’s rest after playful days. Next, make playtime a bit more fun with a few new toys from Dollar General’s private brand, Forever Pals, which include a variety toy pack for dogs and a feather wand for cats. With these accessories, your pet will be wagging their tail or purring with excitement all day long!

By shopping wisely for all your pet’s needs, you can provide them with quality products while stretching your budget in the process.

FUN ADVICE to Introduce Kids TO GARDENING

Lawn & Garden

Warmer months are likely to have the whole family eager to dive into outdoor activities. This year, as you tackle the garden, find ways to get the youngest family members in on the action, too.

Not only is gardening an activity you can enjoy together, there are numerous ways to incorporate age-appropriate, teachable moments from counting and colors to responsible care of living things.

Creating a positive first experience with gardening can start with this simple advice:

 Dedicate a spot for a junior garden, which allows you to instill a sense of pride and ownership in the little gardener while protecting your own garden areas from ambitious young hands.

 Provide appropriate tools in child sizes. Just as you would teach a child the finer points of baseball using a bat and glove, demonstrate the joys of gardening with tools such as a rake, hoe and trowel, all of which can be found in sizes more manageable for little helpers.

is gardening an activity you can enjoy together, there are numerous ways to incorporate age-appropriate"

 Let the kids choose what to plant. Whether flowers or food plants, allow children to make their own decisions (within reason) about what they would like to grow. This can help them engage in the magic of watching items they selected emerge from the ground and grow into their finished forms.

 Encourage exposure to unfamiliar plants that entice the senses with appealing smells and flavors. Herbs such as chives, mint and basil are good choices, or consider edible flowers such as pansies or violets.

 Set an example for your child to imitate by giving regular and proper care to your own garden.

Remember to bring the lesson full circle by enjoying the bounty of your garden together, whether it’s a small hand-cut bouquet or a meal featuring your child’s fresh-grown produce. Find more tips for gardening with your kids at eLivingtoday.com.

HOW CLIMATE CHANGE IMPACTS BIRDS & How to Help from Home

Bird feeding is a common practice in the United States, with more than 59 million Americans participating, according to the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. In addition to providing aesthetic and recreational benefits, bird feeding can have positive impacts on bird populations.

30 POCONO FAMILY MAGAZINE © JULY/AUGUST 2023

According to the National Audubon Society, birds provide important ecosystem services, such as pollination, pest control and seed dispersal. In fact, around 87% of flowering plants rely on animal pollinators, including birds, to reproduce and grow, according to a study published in “Science.” Birds also consume fruits and berries then spread the seeds, which helps maintain biodiversity and promotes the growth of new plants.

Considered good indicators of the health of the ecosystem, changes in bird populations and behaviors can signal changes in the environment, such as pollution, habitat loss and climate change. As temperatures, weather patterns and ecosystems change, it can affect the availability of food for birds, which may alter their behavior.

Feeding birds can be a beneficial practice that helps them cope with climate change. Consider these benefits:

• Supplemental Food: Bird feeders provide a supplemental source of food for birds when natural food sources may be scarce due to prolonged droughts or severe storms. Bird feeding can help birds maintain energy levels, especially during breeding or migration when nutritional needs are higher.

• Range Shifts: Climate change can cause shifts in the distribution and abundance of bird species. Feeders can serve as “refuges” for birds, providing reliable food sources as they move in search of suitable habitats.

• Behavioral Adaptations: Some species may alter their feeding behaviors due to changes in timing of insects hatching or plants flowering, which can affect the availability of natural food sources. Bird feeders can help bridge these gaps, providing a stable source of food when traditional sources are disrupted.

Feeders

To attract more birds this season, it’s important to offer quality feed in a variety of bird feeder types placed at different heights.

Traditional tube feeders are basic, all-purpose, must-have feeders that work well for finches, nuthatches and other small birds that cling. Made with state-of- the-art materials to prevent warping and discoloration, Cole’s Terrific Tube Feeder features a quick-clean removable base.

Simply push a button and the bottom of the feeder comes off for easy access. Rinse well with soapy water, submerge in a 9-1

water-bleach solution, rinse and dry. Then reattach the bottom; there’s no disassembly or assembly of multiple parts necessary. Regular cleaning of feeders is essential, preventing mold, germs and disease.

Another option, bowl feeders, can serve not only seeds, but also dried mealworms, fruit and suet in cake or kibble form. For example, Cole’s Bountiful Bowl Feeder comes with an adjustable dome cover you can raise or lower to protect from rain and prevent larger birds and squirrels from getting to the food.

Popular Foods

In addition to feeders, offering a variety of foods is vital for inviting different species to your backyard.

• Birdseed: Not all birdseed is created equal. Look for quality blends without filler seeds like red millet and oats. All-natural seed, containing no chemicals or mineral oil, is safe and more appealing to birds. Consider researched, specially formulated options like all-natural black oil sunflower, Cole’s “Hot Meats” (sunflower meats infused with habanero chile peppers) or

Special Feeder blend, which is packed with black oil sunflower, sunflower meats, black striped sunflower, raw peanuts, safflower and pecans.

• Dried Mealworms: Full of energy, essential nutrients, fats and proteins, mealworms are a preferred food for adult songbirds. Dried mealworms are easy to feed, less messy and lack the “ick” factor of live worms.

• Fresh Fruit: Apple and orange halves and chunks of banana are favorites for orioles and tanagers.

• No-Melt Suet: Perfect for insect-eating birds, high-fat food provides abundant calories and rich nutrition.

Don’t forget, birds need water just as much as humans. Drinking water helps regulate body processes, improves metabolism and maintains health. Birds also use water for preening and bathing, and on hot days, standing in cool water or taking a quick splash can help them keep cool.

MUST-HAVES for

Gatherings and get-togethers may commonly take place inside, but giving your guests extra space takes nothing more than a little creativity and the right outdoor appliances. Open a new door – literally – and head outside to take advantage of unused deck, patio and yard space.

As a natural extension of your home, a few key pieces of lighting, heating and cooking equipment can turn your backyard into an entertaining oasis. Let your personal style shine and elevate your hosting skills with these ideas from the experts at the Propane Education & Research Council.

Lighting

Flame lighting may not be every homeowner’s first consideration, but more hosts are relying on it to add upscale elegance to outdoor gatherings. Custom lanterns, modern chandeliers, pendants and tabletop units offer stylish additions to modern and classic designs alike.

No matter your tastes, propane flame lighting fixtures can be placed in multiple areas for aesthetic and practical purposes. While it’s hard to top the soothing effect of a starry night while calming flames reflect off your windows and add a glow to your patio, flame lighting also can ward off intruders or animals and help prevent tripping in the dark.

Grills & Cooking Equipment

Propane can help you bring your dream kitchen to life outdoors. First establish a budget and identify a builder then build out the features of your high-

performing kitchen in the peaceful setting nature offers. Often, the centerpiece of the space are grills, which are available in a variety of sizes and styles. Some offer features like side burners for sauces and rotisseries.

Because they heat up fast and provide precise temperature control, propane-powered outdoor cooking appliances are a popular choice for homeowners who want to spend less time preparing food and more time enjoying it. With instant on-off convenience just like indoor gas ranges, outdoor propane grills, pizza ovens and ovens help home chefs create perfectly cooked meals with no coals, soot or ash to clean up. The appliances can also be built in to a straight, L-shape or U-shape bar to complete your outdoor cooking paradise.

Patio Heaters

If chilly weather brings on the blues in your region, make the most of your outdoor space with a propane-powered patio heater that allows for entertaining nearly year-round. Propane patio heaters can raise the outdoor air temperature up to 25 F while emitting a circle of radiant heat up to 25 feet in diameter. Next time you want to get outside before patio season arrives, start up a propane patio heater to enjoy cozy warmth in a clean, safe, reliable way.

Fireplaces & Fire Pits

Another option for bringing warmth to outdoor entertaining can happen with the push of a button in the form of a propane fireplace or fire pit. These smokeless solutions come without the maintenance of wood-burning fires, meaning you can enjoy the heat and ambiance of flames dancing in the night sky while skipping the fuss of soot, ash and burning logs. Plus, cleanenergy propane delivers heat more efficiently with a lower carbon footprint than traditional energy sources like wood, which take a toll on the environment.

Pool Heaters

You can maximize your fun for as much of the year as possible and combat the elements with propane pool and spa heaters. Available for in-ground and above ground pools and spas, propane heaters operate at a higher efficiency than electric systems and maintain heat better in cooler weather while also operating cleanly and taking up minimal space.

Encouraging & fostering play for your pets

Being a pet parent involves much more than providing just their basic needs. To keep your pet happy, active and healthy, it's important to encourage them to play, while providing opportunities for safe exploration and fun bonding time with their family. Whatever kind of pet you have, there are steps you can take that will help them thrive.

Here are tips to help you have fun with your furry family member.

1. Understand their needs

Every animal has needs beyond shelter, food and water. Most cats need places to feel safe, like high perches or snug

sanctuaries - plus opportunities to practice stalking and hunting (toy mice and wand toys). While all dogs need outdoor exercise and opportunities to bond with humans, their behaviors vary by breed. For example, dogs bred to herd sheep (collies, sheep dogs and shepherds) love to chase balls and flying discs, while terriers enjoy digging.

Take this time to research your pet's breed and ask your veterinarian about their behaviors to understand how they'll most enjoy playing. Because they're also individuals who may not conform to expected behaviors, observe your furry friend as you play and notice what they respond to most. Can you tell when they're engaged and excited? That can help you identify the best ways to play with them.

42 POCONO FAMILY MAGAZINE © JULY/AUGUST 2023

2. Know their developmental stage

It's also crucial to understand your pet's life stage. Puppies and kittens have tons of energy and behaviors, like chewing on things, that they may outgrow as they get older. Mature animals have less energy and stamina, so ask your vet about the level of activity you should encourage.

Continue stimulating your pet through enrichment activities to help keep them active. Switching out toys occasionally can help adult animals stay curious and interested in play, keeping them healthier as they age.

3. Create a dedicated play space

While you may associate playing with your pet as an outside activity, it's great to have a space set up for playing with your pet indoors, too. This should be an area where you won't have to worry about knocking things over, so make sure there's enough room to play and explore.

Try a basement room (ideally with windows for natural light), screened-in porch or sunroom outfitted with pet beds and their favorite toys.

4. Clean and disinfect pet toys and play areas

Pets' play areas and their toys are often overlooked when employing a cleaning and disinfecting routine. Consider the type of surface and how often that surface is touched when determining when to clean and when to disinfect. If the space is high traffic, you'll want to clean more frequently or disinfect in addition to cleaning.

To clean and disinfect hard, non-porous surfaces, try FamilyGuard™ Brand Disinfectant Cleaner, which is expertly formulated for use in homes with children and pets. For disinfecting your pets' hard, non-porous toys and surfaces, choose the FamilyGuard™ Brand Disinfectant Spray which is designed for use on over 100 surfaces1, including where kids and pets play.

FamilyGuard™ Brand Disinfectant Cleaner and FamilyGuard™ Brand Disinfectant Spray are both formulated to kill 99.9% of germs2, when used as directed on hard, non-porous surfaces, by allowing to sit on clean surfaces for at least five minutes.

Surfaces like plastic toys and other items your pet may lick or put in their mouth require the additional step of rinsing with drinkable water after disinfecting with FamilyGuard Brand™ products.

5. Pet-proof your home

When getting a new pet, especially if they're young, pet-proof your home just as you would babyproof before the birth of a child. Look for potential hazards your pet could encounter by starting on the floor to see what they could get into. Are there cords waiting to be chewed? Choking hazards under tables? Work your way up, tucking cords away (or getting cord wraps) and removing anything that could harm a pet.

Then consider what houseplants could be toxic to your pet. Make sure to look up the plants you have in your home and remove or put any out of reach if they're toxic.

Follow these tips to help you have a happier pet who will love spending time playing with you and your family for many years to come.

PLANNING A CALIFORNIA

With near-endless sunshine, world-class theme parks and abundant outdoor experiences, California is an ideal destination to embark on an unforgettable adventure.

To make it easy for travelers to plan their trips, the 2023 California Road Trips guide includes 13 action-packed itineraries that begin and end at one of the state’s 27 commercial airports, highlighting how easy it is to fly into any region of the Golden State and hit the road.

“California’s natural beauty, diverse topography and culturally rich communities are the perfect backdrop for an epic road trip experience,” said Caroline Beteta, president and CEO of Visit California, a nonprofit organization that partners with the state’s travel industry to develop and maintain marketing programs that keep California top-of-mind as a premier travel destination. “This year’s guide showcases how the state’s vast network of international and regional airports provide travelers with convenient access to every corner of the California Road Trip Republic.”

The guide’s cover star, Dwyane Wade, a three-time NBA champion, dad and owner of Napa Valley winery Wade Cellars, moved to Los Angeles after his retirement in 2019. Wade said California granted him a soulful landscape and much-needed quiet time.

“I like to find moments where no one can expect anything of me and California allows me to have those moments,” Wade said. “I’ll drive to the beach and walk next to the water. I’ll drive all over to find those moments to connect with myself… I get my energy from that.”

While California’s world-renowned coastline provides a dramatic backdrop, adventures can be found in every region of the Golden State. Featured drives take travelers to both cities and classic small towns, family attractions and far-reaching, otherworldly landscapes. A few sample road trip itineraries include:

 “Animals, Desert and Offbeat Art” combines kid-friendly experiences like LEGOLAND California and the San Diego Zoo Safari Park with the rich arts culture and stargazing opportunities in Borrego Springs.

 “Cactus and Cocktails” explore both the cosmopolitan pleasures of Palm Springs and the rugged sceneries of Joshua Tree National Park and the Mojave National Preserve.

 “National Park Adventures” is a 412-mile adventure that begins at Fresno Yosemite Airport and explores the wonders of Yosemite, Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks.

 “Road to Gold” is a four-day trek that begins in Sacramento, explores Lake Tahoe and meanders back through Gold Country with photo opportunities at every turn.

 “Innovation and Agricultural Bounty” features a San Josebased itinerary that showcases cutting-edge arts, charming seaside villages and bountiful farmlands on a 238-mile journey.

How to Get the Most Out of Your Retirement

etiring from the workforce provides opportunities you may have been unable to take advantage of during your working years, including discovering new passions and devoting more time to the people you love.

Even though your income might be lower than when you were working full-time, being free of financial burdens like credit card debt or a mortgage may provide extra disposable income that allows you to explore hobbies, develop new skills or focus on spending time living life to the fullest.

In fact, if you’re over the age of 62, own a home and have equity in it, you can extend your retirement runway by borrowing against that equity. A home equity conversion mortgage, like those available from Guaranteed Rate, a leader in mortgage lending and digital financial services with more than 850 branches across the United States, can flip the roles of lender and borrower. Homeowners can remain on their property and generate income, provided they own at least 60% of their home’s equity and it is FHA eligible.

“These mortgages fit a very specialized segment of the marketplace, but for those seeking financial flexibility, they can be a game-changer,”

“These mortgages fit a very specialized segment of the marketplace, but for those seeking financial flexibility, they can be a game-changer,” said Jim Hettinger, executive vice president of operations, Guaranteed Rate. “Equity build-up over time is one of the most compelling reasons to purchase a home. These loans give long-time homeowners a way to enjoy the benefits of that equity in their retirement years – all while retaining ownership and continuing to live in the house they call home.”

While this type of loan shares many similarities with home equity loans, the requirements generally allow for more flexible terms for homeowners, who remain responsible for property taxes, home insurance and home maintenance. Over time, the loan balance increases with the understanding the mortgage will one day be paid off, usually by selling the home, providing the homeowner more flexibility and comfort during retirement. Meanwhile, homeowners receive money from their homes in the form of a lump sum payment or line of credit without making monthly mortgage payments.

Consider these ways to take advantage of a home equity conversion mortgage and get the most out of your retirement.

Travel

With minimal limitations on vacation time in retirement, it’s possible to get out and explore both domestically and internationally. With the flexibility to take extended leave, retirees can even enjoy trips dedicated to a specific hobby or pastime, such as golfing, shopping, biking, attending sporting events, appreciating the arts and more. You could also consider purchasing a boat or motorhome to take your exploration to the next level.

Pick Up a New Hobby

With more time now available, it’s possible to expand on hobbies you enjoyed while working or pick up an entirely new pursuit altogether. The possibilities are nearly endless, but some options to consider include gardening, dancing, reading, baking, hiking, collecting antiques, restoring furniture, golfing, bird watching, sculpting or wine or beer making, among others.

Learn a New Skill

Devoting time to pick up a new skill can help keep your mind and body sharp. Whether through formal classes or watching videos online to learn, speaking a new language, playing a musical instrument or cooking a new cuisine are popular options for enhancing your skills later in life.

Benefits of a Home Equity Conversion Mortgage (HECM) HECMs can provide peace of mind during retirement if you’re worried about making ends meet. Using the equity you’ve already put into your home opens up new sources of income while letting you stay in your own home. Consider these additional benefits:

• Offers flexibility in drawing and repaying borrowed funds

• No pressure to make a payment, even if interest rates increase

• Untouched funds in your line of credit grow tax-free over time

• Any remaining equity at maturity can be released to borrower or heirs

• The line of credit stays the same, even if the home’s market value drops

• Money spent on conventional mortgage payments can go to other needs
