Why We Feel Happy in the Spring By: Roseanne Bottone
6 POCONO FAMILY MAGAZINE© MARCH/APRIL 2022
Happiness is a choice! Most people decide to be happy; we embrace Mother Nature’s vernal gifts with delight. And sometimes, even the grumpiest winter hermit is seduced to step outdoors with the change of season and can’t help but feel cheery. On the first warm and sunny day, like insects crawling out of the woodwork, humans take to the streets, porches, yards, and hiking paths. Purposely or instinctively, we leverage the unique offerings of springtime to lift our spirits and foster positive thoughts.
Balance
Since the winter solstice at 9:58 am on Tuesday, December 21, 2021, daylight hours have been increasing. Exposure to sunlight is essential for human health. It stimulates our bodies to produce vitamin D which supports bone health, lowers blood pressure, facilitates normal immune system functioning and resistance to disease, and promotes good mental health. No wonder we feel an overwhelming desire to raise our faces to the warm sun after a long stretch of indoor living.
"Spring is nature’s way of saying, ‘Let’s Party!’Party!’- Robin Williams By 10:32 am on Sunday, March 20th of this new year, we will experience the vernal equinox. This is the moment the sun will be positioned directly over the earth’s equator and day and night hours will be equal. From that moment on (until the first day of summer), daylight hours will grow even longer. We have every reason to feel hopeful.
Rebirth
Each spring, the earth celebrates by reclaiming her juvenescence. Who doesn’t dream of revisiting our youthful days of suppleness, flexibility, and optimism (if we could know then what we know now)? Every year, the earth predictably displays examples of rebirth in a riotous explosion of colors, scents, and sounds; we know the symphony will burst forth momentarily and we happily anticipate the first note. Earth’s creatures stir; bears emerge from hibernation, deer birth their foals, crickets chirp, frogs croak, and birdsongs fill the air. Dormant flower bulbs sprout, push through the earth, grow taller every day, and bloom before our eyes. Perennials of all varieties transform from dull and scraggly to supple and robust. Migratory birds return and fill the skies with ever-morphing
patterns. Then there are the scents of rain and, (my favorite), the smell of freshly cut grass following the distant hum of a mower. The changes are beautiful and inspiring. With increased exposure to the sun’s rays, the happiness hormone, serotonin, increases in the human body and our mood improves.
Movement
We rested while it was dark and perhaps gained a little weight during the more sedentary colder months. Now we feel a “spring” in our step. It is human nature to sleep less and increase activity during the spring. Our “third eye” – the pineal gland - sends a signal to the brain to lower melatonin production which makes us feel more energetic. It is no coincidence then that we head to the tennis courts, dust off the bicycles and fishing rods, and take our dogs for nice long walks.
Love is in the Air
Mark Twain explains this phenomenon quite eloquently. “It’s spring fever. That is what the name of it is. And when you’ve got it, you want – oh, you don’t quite know what it is you do want, but it just fairly makes your heart ache, you want it so!” Researchers speculate that, as melatonin levels decline, the pituitary gland is stimulated to produce other hormones at levels that make humans feel sexier. Or perhaps it is the novelty of spring that affects the dopamine system and pushes couples over the edge to fall in love. Alas! This is all so clinical. Can anyone really explain why people fall in love? If you’re inclined to do so, spring is simply the loveliest time of year to let it happen!

6 TIPS ON HOW TO KEEP YOUR FAMILY SAFE ONLINE
MARCH/APRIL 2022 POCONO LIVING MAGAZINE© 9
T
oday, Americans lose more money to digital crime than to home burglary. About 80% of U.S. adults say they are not doing enough to protect their personal information online, according to a survey by Harris Poll and Aura, a consumer digital safety company. However, most don't know where to start conversations with their families about internet safety. Safer Internet Day, held this year on Feb. 8, encourages the creation of a better internet that empowers everyone to use technology responsibly, respectfully, critically and creatively. In honor of their own mission to create a safer internet for everyone, Aura is sharing six tips you and your family can follow to stay safe online.
Get creative with passwords Many people use weak or recycled passwords on multiple accounts. While it's easier to remember a few passwords for many accounts, especially if they're shared family accounts, you are leaving your family open to identity theft and other cyberattacks.
Children under 18 are often the target of identity theft because their credit score is entirely unmarked, and their SSN is often unmonitored. Posting your child's full name and birthday on your social media can be just as dangerous as posting your own. To help prevent identity theft, sit down and discuss what information you and your family share and who might be in the audience each time you post on social media. Also, review the privacy settings for some of your most visited websites and social media platforms.
Don't ignore updates Don't ignore system and browser updates as they provide critical updates that protect against bad actors and fix any critical issues in software. Explain to your children and older family members that these notifications are there to help keep us safe online. When possible, enroll in automatic updates and use antivirus software, antispyware and a firewall on your computer.
Explain to your children the importance of keeping passwords a secret for just you and them. For older students, discuss how using the same password for all accounts and apps makes it easier for bad actors to access personal information. Update your passwords to consist of a random combination of letters, numbers and symbols.
"Most people provide personal information like their name, birthday, job and hometown on social media without a second thought."
To make things easier on your family members, Aura has a password manager to create, store and remember account login information. Also, set up two-factor authentication for your accounts and, when possible, opt to use an authentication app over text verification codes.
Avoid suspicious websites
Tighten up your social media privacy Most people provide personal information like their name, birthday, job and hometown on social media without a second thought. If a bad actor wants to collect information about you, social media will be their first stop.

When shopping online, it's crucial to know what makes a website safe to explore. Check to see if "https" appears in the URL. The "S" indicates the website is secure and that the website is safeguarding the sensitive data that passes from you to the retailer. While looking at the address, verify that the brand is not in a subdomain. For example, be sure you're shopping from retailer.com and not retailer.buy.com. Also, review the site for misspellings, grammar mistakes and low-quality images. Make sure to look for an email or phone number on the contact page and verify the validity.
Stay alert for phishing scams Phishing attacks are emails, phone calls and texts that appear to come from a reputable source but attempt to instill fear and urgency in the recipient. Phishing scams offer too-good-tobe-true deals, urgent notification to reset an account login or contain an attachment or hyperlinks. The goal may be to install malware, steal credit card data or access login information.

To protect your family against phishing, teach your loved ones to: Review all emails closely. Never share credit card details or sensitive personal information like your Social Security number via email or phone.

ole-playing has the power to boost young children’s creativity, allowing imaginations to run free, while honing social and cognitive skills. Here are a few fun ideas for harnessing these playtime benefits:

Role-Play Toys & Game Ideas TO BOOST KIDS’ CREATIVITY
12 POCONO FAMILY MAGAZINE© MARCH/APRIL 2022
1. Kitchen Fun Whether playing “restaurant” or just pretending to cook a meal at home, kids can imagine they are the chef with the Choppin’ Fun Learning Pot from LeapFrog. Featuring snap-apart veggies, a play knife and cutting board, kids can chop the food, set the temperature dial, add veggies to the pot and watch the pot “boil.” Have kids take your order, follow five step-by-step recipes to make spaghetti sauce, rainbow soup, corn on the cob, carrot soup and broccoli with cheese, then serve up their creations in the bowl.
2. Sock Puppets Crafting sock puppets or paper bag puppets and playing with them is a great way to give kids the opportunity to showcase their artistic side, as well as act out stories and adventures. Use googly eyes and yarn to make the puppets. Then build a “theater” by hanging a blanket between chairs and put on your very own puppet show!
3. Say Cheese

Inspiring creativity and learning, the Fun-2-3 Instant Camera is a pretend camera featuring picture-taking activities and pop-up animal pictures. Kids can strengthen motor skills and imagine they are a professional photographer by turning the zoom lens and clicking the shutter button, as well as by pushing down the photo cards, which feature animals, shapes, colors, fun facts and numbers. A viewfinder color wheel lets kids see the world in yellow, blue or green, and a lens features day and night modes, making visual imaginative play a snap.
4. Backyard Adventure
With a little imagination, a nearby park or even your own backyard can be the perfect setting to play “explorers.” Count all the types of plants, bugs and animals you spy on your adventure. Collect interesting leaves and rocks. Then, talk about what you observe and discover.
5. Go Shopping

Kids can play “store” and take turns pretending to be the customer and clerk with the Count-Along Basket & Scanner. Featuring play food, shopping lists and an interactive scanner that recognizes each food piece, kids can carry the shopping basket or expand it into a rolling shopping cart. There are eight play foods in a variety of food groups, colors, shapes and numbers. The fish, carrots, strawberries, cake, bread, broccoli and grapes show off their silly personalities with music and unique phrases when scanned. Three interactive play modes reinforce learning, as kids can scan a food to find out its name, color and the number printed on it, as well as the foods’ shapes. With fun learning toys and a bit of ingenuity, role-playing games can help expand your child’s world. Courtesy of StatePoint

Earth-Friendly Gear FOR OUTDOOR ENTHUSIASTS Are you an outdoor enthusiast? Read labels carefully while you shop for gear. While they’ve been around for decades, more consumers are becoming aware of a toxic class of chemicals called perfluorinated chemicals, often referred to as PFAS or PFCs. Because PFCs are good at resisting oil, stains, grease and water, they’ve become a go-to treatment for many manufacturers. In fact, PFCs are so widely used, they’re found on everything from shoes and jackets to couches and food wrappers -- including the many items designed for nature lovers! The issue is that these chemicals find ways to enter the environment, the food chain and our water supply, which is bad for wildlife, the planet and human health. Because PFCs have a very hard time breaking down, they’re infamously known as “forever chemicals.”
"The issue is that these chemicals find ways to enter the environment, the food chain and our water supply, which is bad for wildlife, the planet and human health"
Thanks to a heightened understanding of the health issues associated with PFCs, there has been a growing sense of urgency around removing them from consumer products. With a little care, you can shop with brands that have taken earth-friendly steps, and in some cases, bounds, to try to avoid these so-called “forever chemicals.” Need some inspiration? The following gift guide includes some of the best outdoor gear designed to stand up to adventures of all kinds, and it’s all ecofriendly to boot!
Cozy Footwear Give the gift of indoor comfort outdoors with the warm, cozy Howser collection from KEEN Footwear. A hygge-worthy, “sleeping bag for feet,” their fuzzy lining and PU cushioned insoles mean they’re as cozy as house slippers, and their grippy, sturdy rubber outsoles make them a solid choice for outdoor use. boots and high top choices for women, men and kids -- all of which are a natural fit for chilly evenings by the fire or rolling out of the tent in the morning to get the coffee brewing. Not only is the entire collection PFC-free, options that contain leather are sourced from Leather Working Group-certified tanneries, which use processes to reduce chemical use and their impact on watersheds, creating an environmentally preferred leather. “Eliminating PFCs from footwear is easier said than done,” says Erik Burbank, vice president of KEEN Effect, a team that guides the brand’s responsible manufacturing efforts. “We’ve spent years working to eliminate PFCs from our products and supply chain with safe alternatives while delivering the performance people expect from KEEN. In that time, we estimate we’ve saved over 50,000 KGs of fluorinated chemicals from being introduced into the environment. As part of our Detox the Planet initiative, we continue to push for ways to put the environment first.” To learn more, visit keenfootwear.com.
Layer Up Trekkers and campers know that weather is unpredictable and that makes layering essential. Now, they can do so with both performance and sustainability in mind. All of Houdini’s sportwear apparel is PFC-free. Plus, many of its garments are made from recycled materials, and are either recyclable or completely biodegradable. Stay warm and prepared for anything by checking out the Swedish brand’s base layers, mid layers, outerwear and accessories.

RARE DISEASE DAY
By: Elizabeth J. Decker
“Alone we are rare. Together we are strong.” “Alone we are rare. Together we are strong.” This is the trademark for the National Organization for Rare Disorders, Inc. (NORD), US Sponsor of International Rare Disease Day. NORD is one of over 66 National Alliances (rare disease patient advocacy organizations) representing over 100 countries and regions all over the world, referred to as “Rare Disease Day Partners.” The month of February was designated “Rare Disease Awareness Month” by the European advocacy group “EURODIS” in 2008; that year, the first International Rare Disease Day was held on February 29. EURODIS acts as the central coordinator among the “Rare Disease Day Partners,” patients with rare diseases, and the global community at large to create unified messages and visual materials to raise awareness for rare diseases and the individuals who live with them. “Rare Disease Day” is a recognized day created to bring awareness and subsequent empowerment, community, and equity to over 300 million people worldwide fighting any of approximately 6,000 known rare diseases. This February marks the 15th “Rare Disease Awareness Month,” and February 28 will be the 15th annual “Rare Disease Day.” Ultimately, the objectives of Rare Disease Day are to ensure equal access to treatment and healthcare, to create more equitable social opportunities for those fighting rare diseases (higher education, jobs, etc.) and to simultaneously reduce stigmatization through social inclusion. Furthermore, through raising awareness, EURODIS and its Rare Disease Day Partners 18 POCONO FAMILY MAGAZINE© MARCH/APRIL 2022
aim to find means to fund research for more effective and lifesaving therapies as well as to minimize the time it takes to diagnose a person with any given rare disease. “Rare Disease Day” utilizes the narratives of “real life Rare Disease” “heroes” to identify common challenges faced by those with rare diseases to connect patients as well as their caregivers into a strengthened global community. For 2022, there are 16 “hero” community members from around the world who have agreed to share their stories with the world for the purposes of rare disease advocacy (rarediseaseday.org). Every Rare Disease Day has a specific “Call to Action;” for 2022, the Call to Action has been named “Share Your Colours;” a means of representing individuals with rare diseases utilizing vibrant colors to express positivity, strength, and diversity of the individuals who make up the 300 million rare disease patients worldwide. By utilizing art and simple creative images, this “Rare Disease Day” will become accessible to many more people throughout the world. It is difficult to define what constitutes a “rare disease” because the definition varies broadly, usually by country or region. In general, a rare disease is any disease that affects a very small percentage of a given population. An estimated 72% of rare diseases are genetic, or congenital, frequently affecting people throughout their lives (rarediseaseday.org); many of these diseases present at birth or in infancy and an estimated 30%
of children with rare diseases will not live to see their fifth birthday (SIOP Europe). It is estimated that between 3.5-5.9% of the world population will be affected by a rare disease during the course of their lives (rarediseaseday.org). Rare diseases are usually chronic, disabling, progressive and degenerative, as well as frequently life-threatening. Furthermore, the very nature of rare disease is isolating. Rare Disease Day and its backing organizations aim to acknowledge these points as realities by addressing them on the global stage: By doing this, people fighting the same rare diseases can be brought together form diverse geopolitical backgrounds to fight toward empowerment and equity as a unified and powerful force. Rare Disease Awareness Day is integral not only for raising awareness about rare diseases but also for bringing all of humanity together for the improvement of hundreds of millions of lives. I personally struggle with several potentially lifethreatening rare diseases, and I agree very much with NORD that although we are “rare alone,” we are an unstoppable force when we all work together. You can find much more information about Rare Disease Awareness Month and Rare Disease Day by visiting rarediseaseday.org. You can also visit NORD at rarediseases. org to find additional resources including a searchable rare disease database. Information about the 16 aforementioned “Rare Disease Community Heroes” is also featured on the Rare Disease Day website where you can find remote or local events leading up to and on Rare Disease Day. This website features an immense array of resources, including information regarding the 2030 UN Rare Disease Health Initiative and how public and private sectors as well as individuals can light their buildings and homes on February 28th to show their own colors. Join together in both strength and solidarity in this important global movement.

EASY WAYS TO
Enhance Digestive Health As your social schedule picks up steam and you attend more social gatherings and celebrations, you may find yourself with an unexpected issue: digestive troubles. Problems like this can have a negative impact on your overall wellness, so it's important to make healthy digestion a priority. According to Ayurveda, the ancient Indian science of how to live long and be healthy, the health of the digestive system is the core of optimum health. Ayurvedic medicine asserts the digestive system is based on the strength and balance of its Agni (fire), which enables the body to absorb, digest and assimilate food. The teachings suggest an imbalanced Agni creates undigested residues, which form toxins that create imbalances and can lead to disease. Some of the dietary guidelines for healthy digestion and strong Agni include:
• Allowing 4-6 hours between meals • Avoiding eating between meals • Avoiding foods with cold, wet and heavy qualities • Drinking ginger tea or hot water to stimulate the Agni • Starting a meal with pungent (hot), sour and salty flavors
• Consuming a small amount of bitter taste before a meal to increase the production of hydrochloric acid in the stomach Take steps to protect and nurture your digestive health with these tips:
Add Fiber to Your Diet Plant-based foods that are high in fiber fill you up faster, so you're less likely to overeat, and they also help with digestive regularity. Increase your intake of high-fiber foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans, lentils, nuts and seeds. Take a gradual approach to avoid upsetting your digestive tract and bump up your water intake as you go since fiber will absorb it and decrease the likelihood you experience gas or cramping.
Stay Hydrated Keeping your body well hydrated is like making sure your car's engine is well lubricated. It keeps all your moving parts in sync and operating for top performance. Some fluids can also help with detoxification, which can be especially beneficial when your social calendar is full and your opportunities to overindulge are greater. An option like Buddha Teas' Detox Dharma contains detoxifying herbs that stimulate your digestive system.

IMPROVING HEALTH
HABITS
The last year and a half has been a strong reminder of the importance of good health. Statistics show that 73% of Americans consider their health and wellness a priority and are reevaluating their own lifestyle habits. In a recent survey of 13,000 people, (including 2,000 Americans), commissioned by Herbalife Nutrition and The Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN), 89% of respondents globally reported they are taking steps to improve their health.
5 WAYS TO MAKE CHANGES LAST
As a result of the changes people have made, more than half of those surveyed said they are now able to exercise longer without feeling winded, and 48% have gone down a size or notch in their belt.

Many are now choosing to take their health into their own hands with healthy lifestyle changes - and no matter what changes individuals make, the journey to better health habits almost always begins with small steps. Wondering what you can do to make a lasting change in your overall wellness? Here are five ways you can start improving your health habits today, with insight from Dr. Kent Bradley, chief health and nutrition officer at Herbalife Nutrition:
Eat with nutrition in mind Improving health habits often starts in the kitchen, but maybe you need a few ideas to inspire you. Learning new recipes is easier than ever, with options just a keyword search away. There are hundreds of websites and instructional videos that offer great tutorials, and you can find recipes for virtually any ingredient to suit any taste or diet, whether it's paleo, vegetarian or vegan, taking the work out of discovering delicious and healthy new dishes.
"It's easy to reach for that bag of chips or find yourself in line at the drive-through when you haven't planned a healthy, delicious and filling meal at home."
Skip the junk food Along with eating healthy foods, it's also important to cut down on, or remove, junk food from your diet. It's easy to reach for that bag of chips or find yourself in line at the drive-through when you haven't planned a healthy, delicious and filling meal at home. Successful meal prepping begins by making a list before you go shopping. This allows you to be thoughtful and intentional about what you purchase at the grocery store. Take a few minutes to plan out at least a few meals for the week ahead, perhaps referencing some of the ideas you saw in your search. Not only will you be more likely to eat healthier throughout the week, but you'll save money by avoiding takeout.
year-round and some support your immunity. Supplements can also support other areas of wellbeing, whether you're looking for a pre-workout boost to help you reach for that next personal record, interested in getting enough protein to repair your muscles after a session of heavy lifting or just looking to maintain overall wellness. And according to the survey results, many respondents plan to incorporate more vitamins and supplements into their diet and 69% said they feel knowledgeable about the health benefits those can offer. However, 77% reported they would like to know more about the health benefits of different vitamins and supplements to incorporate into their health regimen.
Exercise more Starting a new fitness routine can be a little daunting, but there are apps that can support you no matter your current fitness level. Free streaming sites like HerbalifeNutritionFitness.com can provide workouts and tips to help keep your training fun and safe so you can avoid injuries and stay consistent. Consider joining a local, outdoor running or walking group. Not only will you meet new people but working out with friends or likeminded people will help keep you accountable and on track to meet your goals. Whatever you do, choose an activity you enjoy and you'll be more likely to stick to it.
Prioritize sleep Your sleep schedule plays a big role in weight maintenance and mental alertness. A lack of sleep can lead to an increase in appetite, which can quickly derail your wellness goals. On the flip side, getting the proper amount of sleep, which experts define as between 7-9 hours a night, can increase your metabolism, helping to burn off those extra calories throughout the day. No matter where you are on your health and wellness journey, know that making improvements starts with small steps. Whether you've decided to make changes to your diet, exercise or meal planning routine, supplementation can benefit you by helping you meet your nutritional requirements. If you're looking for more information on how vitamins and supplements can help you, visit www.crnusa.org.
Take vitamins or supplements Taking a daily supplement can help ensure your nutrient intake is complete. Supplements can help fill nutritional gaps

Fun Ways to Introduce Physics to Kids When many of us think of physics, we think of high-level science courses taught in high school and college. The truth is that not only can you teach your child the basic principles of this branch of science at a young age, but doing so can help them understand the world around them, while laying the groundwork for a continued interest in STEAM learning.
At Home There are many ways to demonstrate basic principles of physics using household objects. However, toys designed for 28 POCONO FAMILY MAGAZINE© MARCH/APRIL 2022
this purpose can be good launching pad for your quest for knowledge. The new line of marble playsets from VTech, Marble Rush, allows kids to build thrilling marble courses, send marbles into motion and compete in exciting challenges with lights and sounds. Added bonus? You’ll be introducing engineering principles at the same time! Each Marble Rush set contains color-coded blocks and easy-to-follow building instructions for kids to create a variety of beginner to advanced courses, or create their own course with endless possibilities. The Marble Rush Ultimate Set and Marble Rush Launchpad Set can also
be combined to create an extreme playset. Plus, the Marble Rush playsets have received the Toy Association’s STEAM Toy Accreditation seal of approval, meeting experts’ criteria for a good STEAM toy. Families can find course design instructions, along with super cool challenges that demonstrate specific physics concepts like force and friction, on the VTech website. On-the-Go Physics truly is all around us, which means there are always opportunities to introduce concepts while on-the-go. Here are a few ideas to get you started: • At a sporting event: Talk about how the ball flies through the air because of the force the athlete applied to it. Discuss how gravity is at the same time, pulling the ball down toward Earth, and how friction from the air around the ball applies a force that slows it down.

"There are many ways to demonstrate basic principles of physics using household objects." • In the car: The car is the perfect place to demonstrate the Doppler Effect and learn about sound. The next time you drive past music, a car alarm or other source of noise, ask your child to observe the way that it sounds as you get closer to it and then how it sounds as you move away from it again. Explain that the noise itself hasn’t changed, but your perception of it has because sound waves are moving differently from the point of view of the observer -- you. • On a walk: Brr…it’s cold outside! The next time you’re on a walk, talk about how even the seasons can be explained by physics. The part of Earth where you live is tilted away from the sun right now, which means that sunlight is more indirect. This is also why the days are shorter this time of year! It’s never too early to bring science to life for kids. There are not only real-world examples of physics at play to discover, but new toys can make learning about these concepts a fun, exciting adventure. Courtesy of StatePoint

A Hall of Fame Feast for Homegating Fans 30 POCONO FAMILY MAGAZINE© MARCH/APRIL 2022
athering your team to plan for a truly memorable game day at home starts with almost everyone's favorite part of the festivities: the food. From meaty meals and zesty appetizers to sweet, long-lasting snacks, fuel your crowd with recipes that keep them coming back from kickoff to overtime.
G
One superstar of the menu at many homegating parties is salsa, whether it's used as a finishing touch in recipes or as a standalone snack to enjoy with chips, veggies or other pairings. In fact, according to the Game Day Eats Report from Fresh Cravings, 22% of guests would insist on running out to pick up salsa if it wasn't available for the feast; 18% would even be devastated and consider leaving. Chef Anthony Serrano recommends these all-American recipes he makes for his family on game day. Pulled Beef and Slaw Sliders are perfect for piling high with delicious toppings before hitting the couch just in time for kickoff. Snacking throughout the action is a preferred approach for many fans, making CastIron Smoked Queso Dip and Hummus Deviled Eggs go-to options for armchair quarterbacks. These crowd-pleasers make game day worth celebrating, especially if you use a salsa with high-quality ingredients like vine-ripened tomatoes, crisp vegetables, zesty peppers and spices found in Fresh Cravings Salsas. Their flavor-packed, vibrant recipe offers a homemade-tasting alternative to the softer, duller blends of jarred salsa. HERE ARE 5 THINGS TO LOOK FOR IN YOUR RESORT

arm sand between your toes, a cool drink in your hand, the sun setting over the beautiful ocean... these are the dreams of an ideal spring break. After what feels like years of video calls with friends, it's time to re-connect and take that much-needed tropical vacation where bare feet, hammocks under palm trees and swim-up bars are just what you need to make new memories. With an all-inclusive getaway, planning is minimal so you can focus on enjoying what matters most - your vacation. The best resorts have something for everyone: mom relaxing at the spa, dad having a cocktail poolside, kids playing all day and adventurous friends seeking beachfront activities and entertainment. And while today's all-inclusive resorts deliver
36 POCONO FAMILY MAGAZINE© MARCH/APRIL 2022
elevated experiences and offerings for every age and interest, not all are alike. For example, some all-inclusive resorts offer enhanced food and beverage options such as ceviche and handmade empanadas alfresco served in a seaside lounge, while others may offer mojito and tequila lounges or unforgettable views with customized drinks prepared by expert mixologists. But not all resorts offer this level of service. Before you book your all-inclusive spring break, make sure your resort has the following five items:
1. Look for a variety of cuisine, and then some A vacation means a break from cooking and meal planning, so when looking to book an all-inclusive resort, make sure they
offer multiple onsite restaurants to remove the hassle of deciding where to eat with your group, while giving a chance to try various cuisines. Hilton Cancun, an All-Inclusive Resort, offers numerous restaurants and dining experiences. For example, you can savor the rich traditions of Mexican cuisine at Maxal, while Auma, the experiential restaurant, prepares meals with ritualistic theater in full view of fire and flame. The resort also features a trattoria serving Mediterranean classics, a Southeast Asian concept, a high-energy all-day lounge, an ice cream and churro shop and a taqueria with a mezcal and tequila bar.
2. Find all the fun in the sun Second to plentiful food and drink at hand, the best thing about an all-inclusive resort is all the activities included in your stay. Be sure to find a resort that offers everything you want. For instance, most Mexican and Caribbean resorts have pools and beaches. But if you need adventure, seek resorts that also include water sports equipment for snorkeling and kayaking. The fun should continue when the sun goes down. Look for resorts offering live music, dazzling shows and dancing.
3. Privacy by the sea Hilton's All-Inclusive Resorts offer a range of breathtaking beachfront resorts in highly coveted locales for families with kids of all ages, and couples. If your spring break vacation is a romantic getaway, you'll want seclusion and serenity. Allinclusive hotels often cater to couples' needs by offering privacy options including adult pools, private swim-out suites and jetted
tubs, plus romantic restaurants, world-class spas and casinos. Or, choose an all-inclusive resort with a kids' club, which offer supervised and fun programs for children while giving mom and dad some space to hit the links or enjoy a quiet meal.
4. Education destination via culture The best all-inclusive resorts integrate local culture into food and beverage, activities and hotel design. According to a recent travel trends report travelers are "looking for unique experiences to immerse themselves in, seeking meaningful ways to connect with the different cultures and destinations whilst discovering something new." Learning about and enjoying new cultures stimulates the mind and satisfies the curious soul, without leaving the resort. Great all-inclusive resorts integrate the local culture with engaging programs, classes and experiences that will enhance your vacation, such as salsa and merengue lessons, tequila tastings and local crafts.
"A vacation means a break from cooking and meal planning, so when looking to book an all-inclusive resort, make sure they offer multiple onsite restaurants"
5. Above and beyond hospitality A final box every traveler should check is a place that spoils you yet feels like home. The right all-inclusive resort will have more than beachfront accommodations. Seek worldclass spas, personalized concierge, friendly team members and high-end offerings. While looking to experience new places and cultures, you also want the trust and reliability that comes from a well-respected company. The best brands offer loyalty programs with earned Points to help book that special vacation. Once you have selected your resort, book, pay and go. All you need to do is have fun. The all-inclusive resort handles the rest. Courtesy of BrandPoint

3 ways you can help local small businesses thrive When you support a small business, you're not only helping build your community, but also directly impacting someone's life. Every customer counts when it comes to small business, which means your dollars can help that small business owner thrive. For example, as the nation's largest insurer, State Farm has more than 19,000 agents who are small business owners themselves, who are committed to restoring lives, rebuilding neighborhoods and investing in the communities where they live and work. This desire to help started 100 years ago when the company was founded by a farmer who was concerned that big city insurance companies would not serve the specific needs of his business and community. Here are three simple ways to support small businesses and have a positive impact:
Get to know your community through its businesses
beyond to support the neighborhood and other small businesses. By supporting those that have a strong investment in your community, you are helping them create a greater impact. "From doughnut shops to beverage distributors, from hair salons to warehouses, State Farm agents are perfectly suited to help small business owners protect their dreams, their livelihoods and their families," said Chief Agency, Sales & Marketing Officer and former State Farm Agent Rand Harbert. "We offer products and services business owners need, and State Farm agents are small business owners themselves."
Share your experience Many small businesses rely on satisfied customers to tell others so they can grow their client base. People trust word of mouth, so your effort makes a difference.
Your support matters all year long. For many people, this means shifting their mindset to thinking about local options first and getting to know the types of products and services your local businesses are providing.
In fact, more than eight out of 10 people around the world said they completely or somewhat trust the recommendations of friends and family, according to Nielsen. Plus, two-thirds said they trust online opinions from consumers. So, tell a friend in person, share a post on social media, or leave a positive review online.
Whether you are purchasing items for yourself or someone else, start to understand how these local businesses can fill your needs. Don't forget, many small businesses offer gift cards, which are wonderful ways to show ongoing support.
"When you support a small business, you're not only helping build your community, but also directly impacting someone's life."
Support small business service providers Small businesses aren't just for tangible goods. Many provide important services, such as your local mechanic, dentist or insurance agent. So, no matter your needs, try and find businesses that are active in the community. You can spot these businesses by seeing how they engage with their neighbors. Look for the providers that are going above and
If you're a small business owner, consider using your platform to build up other entrepreneurs in your neighborhood. The next time you have a need arise, think of how a small business can help. 5 WAYS TO KEEP
you and your dog HEALTHY IN 2022
The beginning of the year is a popular time to build good habits and work on life goals. If you're making plans to improve your life in 2022, think about setting health goals for your dog as well. Dr. Brian Zanghi, research nutritionist at Purina, shares five ways below that you can invest in your dog's health this year and strengthen your bond with your furry friend.
1. Create a daily exercise routine Daily exercise is essential to maintaining your canine companion's physical and behavioral health. Beyond the obvious health benefits of weight management, daily exercise will help curb destructive behavior from excess energy. How much exercise is suitable for your dog? Factors like age, size and health can help you determine the appropriate activity level for your pup. "Ideally, a dog should get 30 minutes of mild to moderate activity three times per week," said Zanghi. "For most dogs, this can be accomplished by a comfortably paced walk." A leisurely walk is ideal if you have an older dog, while a puppy or younger dog will need longer and rigorous workouts to burn off their energy. Creating an exercise routine for your dog is also beneficial for you. According to The New York Times, most dog owners spend 300 minutes each week walking their pets, about 200 minutes more than people without dogs.
If it's been a while since you've regularly exercised your dog, begin with short periods of activity at slow speeds and gradually increase the time, speed and distance. At your pet's annual checkup, ask your vet about appropriate exercise routines for your dog.
2. Incorporate supplements Once you've incorporated exercise into your pet's daily routine, add in supplements to help ease joints that are stiff due to normal daily activity and exercise. Even dogs as young as a year old can experience joint stiffness. Products like EverRoot Dog Hip and Joint supplements deliver omega-3 fatty acids from wild-caught Alaskan salmon and cod that help support healthy joint mobility at any age. These supplements are also made with organic peanut butter, making this a tasty daily supplement for your dog. Many different supplements support several aspects of canine health. For example, EverRoot Dog Skin and Coat supplements are a proactive way to provide support for dogs with sensitive skin. If you're curious about dog supplements but don't know where to start, you can obtain some personalized suggestions from a supplement recommendation tool based on your pet's information and your preferences to help you determine what supplements may help your furry friend.

3. Make time to bond Bonding with your pet is good for your relationship and positively impacts their holistic health. For example, playing with your dog builds their social skills, and it's beneficial for your pet's mental stimulation, which may improve their mood and behavior. It can be as simple as grabbing a ball and playing fetch or, if your dog needs more mental stimulation, you can teach your pet new tricks. If your pup has a knack for retrieving, place some objects around the house and teach them to bring them to you. For a food-motivated canine, you can hide treats in their kennel or other areas indoors and outdoors. Don't forget that physical affection is an essential aspect of their well-being. Physical touch helps increase your dog's release of oxytocin, the "love hormone" found in humans and dogs that reduces stress, promotes relaxation and creates feelings of 42 POCONO FAMILY MAGAZINE© MARCH/APRIL 2022
trust. A recent Purina study found that 15 minutes of petting significantly reduced stress in shelter dogs. Make sure to block out some time every day to cuddle your pup.
4. Prioritize dental health Just like you, your dog needs daily dental hygiene. To make teeth brushing a positive experience for your pooch, introduce dog-specific toothpaste with your finger and progress to a toothbrush once your pet becomes comfortable. Brushing a dog's teeth daily isn't feasible for everyone, but you can still prioritize your dog's dental hygiene with functional chews. Products like DentaLife ActivFresh chews have an active-ingredient blend of honey and natural spirulina that fights bad breath at the source. When you brush your teeth in the morning, give your dog a dental chew so you can take care of your teeth together.
5. Evaluate diet Last, but not least. The beginning of the year is a great time to make sure your dog is getting the proper nutrition and enjoying their food. This is especially important if your pet is entering a new life stage that could affect their diet.
Regularly check your dog's body condition to help you know when to adjust your pet's food portion size, if needed. Three easy ways to assess your dog's body condition and bond at the same time are described. For an ideal body condition, 1) feel the ribs as you pet them, you should be able to feel each individually and depending on their hair coat, you should be able to slightly see the ribs when they breathe, 2) their body should have an hourglass shape when viewed from directly above and curving in at the belly, and 3) when viewed from the side, their belly should have a slight tuck and curve up compared to the bottom of their rib cage. These physical signs are a good indication that your dog has an ideal body condition, and is getting an appropriate daily portion of food to meet their life stage and physical activity needs. Consult your veterinarian for additional information on how to assess your pet's body condition and any recommendations to gradually make changes to their food portion, if needed, to get them to a more ideal body condition.

Keep an eye on your puppy's development. Puppy food is formulated to support a young dog's rapid growth, development and high energy. If you continue to feed your dog puppy food past the point of maturity, it could result in weight gain, which can lead to other health issues. Once your dog has reached adulthood, you can transition to an adult food that meets their nutritional and caloric needs.
Many dog owners are unaware that a 7-year-old dog is considered a senior. As dogs age, their needs change, so make sure to consider a diet that helps keep dogs active and energized in their senior years. Start 2022 on a positive note by investing in your dog's holistic health. Whether you start by engaging in a more rigorous exercise routine, spending more time cuddling, promoting dental and joint health or switching diets, every change counts. Start small and build on these healthy habits for lifelong benefits for you and your pet. Courtesy of BrandPoint MARCH/APRIL 2022 POCONO FAMILY MAGAZINE© 43
Home
"Home is more than just where the heart is. Whether creating an office, a socially distant gathering space or making room for a loved one to move in, people are using their homes in ways they may never have before."
Top 2022 Home Improvements to Enhance an Evolving Lifestyle Home is more than just where the heart is. Whether creating an office, a socially distant gathering space or making room for a loved one to move in, people are using their homes in ways they may never have before. Experts predict homeowners will focus on upgrades and home improvements that fit this evolving lifestyle in 2022 and beyond. In fact, the Leading Indicator for Remodeling Activity from Harvard University's Joint Center for Housing Studies predicts a steady and significant rise in remodeling projects that is projected to reach $401 billion of annual spending by the third quarter of 2022. If you're looking to make some moves with home renovation projects in the New Year, here are five trending upgrades for 2022 that will have lasting impact. 44 POCONO FAMILY MAGAZINE© MARCH/APRIL 2022
Refresh the staircase You probably don't spend much time using staircases compared to the rest of the house, so staircase design isn't likely top of mind. However, if you have dated carpet on your stairs, you have a prime opportunity to revamp a central component of your home for a small investment. It could be as simple as installing new treads, selecting new paint for the walls and maybe a new stain on the trim. To go the extra mile, local ironworkers are happy to custom fabricate a handrail. If you have kids in the house or older family members moving in, keep safety in mind on stairs to help them navigate your home with ease.
Modernize the bathroom It's amazing how the right paint and new hardware can revitalize a row of sad old cabinets. With no major construction involved, you can transform your bathroom vanity over the course of a weekend. Select new hardware that looks bold and stately (think chrome bars, not little plastic knobs) to match the tones in your countertop, and remove the cabinets and give them a fresh, neutral shade. If you're over the white-on-white bathroom look, try a dramatic dark finish that will make your new hardware and fixtures really pop.
Install new flooring Flooring is quite literally the foundation of design, so it must strike a blend of fashion and function. Research flooring with a good combination of durability and timeless aesthetics, like the Duravana hybrid resilient flooring, a waterproof and ecofriendly product exclusive to LL Flooring. Duravana's range of styles are designed to replicate the natural color, grain and texture of real hardwood, with more unique plank patterns than traditional vinyl plank or laminate. Plus, its easy-click installation makes it DIY friendly. Learn more at LLFlooring. com.
Organize the mudroom A little bit of organization in an entryway can make a huge difference in the functionality and flow of the home. Start with simple shoe and boot storage, like a DIY bench or wall rack, so those items don't spill out to hallways and bedrooms. Wall hooks are helpful for when guests arrive. And if you don't have a true mudroom, a bit of wall-mounted storage can make even the slimmest entryway feel intentional and inviting.
Define outdoor spaces Once the snow melts, adding a dedicated lounge to your back or side yard can feel like adding a whole room's worth of square footage to your house. It could be as easy as a new patio set and a fire pit with some gravel or simple flagstone landscaping. Gabion baskets, framed with good-looking lumber, can be made into a simple divider or group seating. Pergolas with climbing plants continue to be popular. This outdoor space can become a year-round retreat that everyone will love. Courtesy of BrandPoint

Countless headlines suggest you have to drive a batterypowered electric vehicle (EV) if you care about the planet. Yet consumers, including many who want to be “green,” are still opting for gasoline-powered vehicles 98 percent of the time. What’s standing in their way?
COST.
It may cost as much as $10,000 or $15,000 more up-front for a battery-electric car compared with a similar gas-powered car.
CHARGING.
Installing a home charger that’s required to run a EV can cost an additional $1,000 to $3,000. Additionally, a home charger may not be possible for those who park on the street or live in an apartment building.
ROAD TRIPS.
The number of public charging spots is growing, but it’s not like the nationwide network of gas stations. Even with a relatively robust 200-mile range, EV owners must plan carefully for charging breaks every few hours of driving. It may take 30 to 60 minutes to add enough battery power for another couple hours of driving. Bigger battery packs can give longer range, but also longer charging times. If any of these realities are the deal-breakers preventing you from going green behind the wheel -- relax! There are still at least four good alternatives to EVs that will still help the environment without breaking the bank.

HYBRIDS Hybrid technology has been around since the late 1990s. Hybrids combine a smaller gas engine with battery-powered electric motors for better fuel economy. Hybrid sedans like the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord or Hyundai Sonata now average more than 50 miles per gallon. The Toyota Prius Eco gets 56 mpg in combined city-highway driving, according to fueleconomy.gov. A 50-mpg hybrid replacing a 30-mpg vehicle will save $625 a year in fuel costs, or $3,100 over five years. You’ll save even more if your trade-in gets less than 30 mpg!
PLUG-IN HYBRIDS A plug-in hybrid is a hybrid you can plug-in to charge a separate battery and then drive for 30-50 miles on pure electric power. After that, a gasoline engine kicks in, operating like a hybrid. For commuting, a plug-in like a Toyota RAV4 Prime or Prius Prime is a great choice. The average U.S. commute is 16 miles. With just 32 miles of electric-only range, that commuter wouldn’t need gasoline to get to work.

FUEL-CELL ELECTRIC VEHICLES Fuel-cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) are electric vehicles powered by a reaction from hydrogen fuel and oxygen, making water vapor the only emission. The 2021 Toyota Mirai, for example, has a range of more than 400 miles, compared to 200-300 for most newer EVs. FCEVs are refilled at a station, like the gas stations you’re used to. The main challenge is a lack of hydrogen infrastructure. California is the only state with a robust network of fueling stations -- but more are on the way.

MORE EFFICIENT GASOLINE-POWERED CARS While not as dramatic in helping the environment as the other options mentioned, conventional gas engine cars still have a lot to offer. Automakers have been improving them continuously to meet tougher federal fuel economy regulations. Some gas-powered SUVs you see around town, like the 2021 Honda CR-V or the Toyota RAV4, might get 30 percent better mileage than the 10-year-old car or SUV they’re replacing. That would cost about $400 less per year to operate than their 2011 counterparts, or an extra $2,000 in your pocket after just five years! Courtesy of StatePoint

A checklist for good senior health & wellness
A
s you age, your health needs change. Staying on top of senior wellness activities is important, but it can sometimes feel overwhelming. Creating a list of health and wellness to-do's can help you stay organized, so you look and feel your best. "Aging well is living well and it all starts with a combination of activities that can improve our mental and physical well-being," says Dr. Scott Kaiser, chief executive officer of Determined Health, member of the Tivity Health Healthy Aging Coalition and a physician specializing in geriatric medicine. "Although health and wellness may seem to get increasingly complicated with age, it doesn't have to be a struggle. A few simple - and fun - steps can keep us on the healthy aging path. By taking a proactive approach and prioritizing health, seniors can live their best life." Dr. Kaiser shares a simple senior-health checklist to help keep you or a loved one focused on wellness: 48 POCONO FAMILY MAGAZINE© MARCH/APRIL 2022
• Annual physical: Everyone's health is different. Even
if you see specialists for certain conditions, it's typically recommended to get an annual physical with your primary physician. This is an opportunity for important health screenings that may include tests to evaluate blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, bone density and more. It's also a good time for you to ask any questions and discuss concerns.
• Vaccinations: Staying current on recommended
vaccinations can help you stay healthy and limit the spread of disease. Cold and flu season has arrived, so now is the time to ask your doctor about getting an influenza vaccine if you haven't already. The risk of severe illness from COVID also increases with age. COVID vaccines are safe and effective in preventing severe illness and you can help protect yourself and the people around you by getting vaccinated.
• Physical activity: All seniors eligible for Medicare
benefits through a Medicare Advantage, Medicare Supplement or group retiree plan may be eligible to join SilverSneakers
at no additional cost and have access to live and on-demand virtual workouts, including nearly 2,000 activities and classes per week in a variety of lengths and formats. Check eligibility at SilverSneakers.com.
• Social connection: Maintaining friendships and
connecting with others is an important component to supporting physical, mental and emotional wellness. Set up coffee with friends. Join community groups. Check out social engagement opportunities through programs like SilverSneakers where working out with a group of peers can build friendships and community.
"Aging well is living well and it all starts with a combination of activities that can improve our mental and physical well-being"
• Mental health: Although prioritizing mental health is
now more widely accepted, it still can be a challenge for older adults to admit they need help. Talk with your doctor about how you feel and mental health concerns you may have. There are many ways to help with a variety of mental health concerns, including learning mindfulness techniques to reduce anxiety, seeing a therapist and medication.
• Mental enrichment: Cognitive decline can occur as you
age, so it's important to be proactive to help support brain health through mental stimulation. Read books. Join a weekly game group. Check out GetSetUp, new for SilverSneakers members in participating health plans. This program provides an online learning platform designed specifically for seniors with a wide range of live video classes - over 2,000 hours per week on more than 1,800 topics - to support mental enrichment.
• Nutrition: What you eat fuels your body and mind, so it's important to pack your pantry and refrigerator with wholesome foods. Stock up on fruits, vegetables, lean meats, whole grains, beans and low-fat dairy. Then explore recipes you can try to experience new flavors and keep mealtime exciting. If you need help or have strict dietary concerns, consider working with a nutritionist for additional guidance. Doesn't it feel good to check a few things off your list?
