While they lead with the best of intentions, nearly all parents will worry about whether their child is kind to others when adults are not around.

“We often encourage children to be friends with everyone, but that’s unrealistic”

At some point, many parents will likely find themselves encouraging their children to “be kind” or “be friendly.”

3. Build a toolbox of responses for tough situations. First, help your child build emotional literacy skills by helping him or her learn to identify and name feelings. Then work together to identify appropriate expressions of those feelings. “Children need to learn they can express big emotions, like frustration or anger, without taking those feelings out on others,” Peters said. Some healthy ways to react to emotional moments could be to find a quiet place to calm down, talk with a trusted adult like a teacher, squeeze fists or name the feeling: “I’m so angry right

Consider these three ways parents can encourage empathy:

2. Intentionally call out acts of kindness. Go beyond a simple “thank you” and be specific about why the action was kind: “That was so kind of you to clear the table after dinner. Your help made cleanup go faster. I appreciate that.” Don’t forget to use this same technique with other family members, too. Ask your child what compliments he or she likes to hear and encourage him or her to do the same for others. This teaches empathy and encourages children to treat others the way they want to be treated.

1. Try a new twist on “what did you do today?” Find a consistent time during the day – at pick up, during dinner or before bedtime – to ask your child, “How did you help someone today?” or “How were you kind to someone today?” Be sure to offer your own examples from your day, too. This helps your child understand the connection between his or her actions and kindness to others. It also opens the conversation for you and your child to discuss missed opportunities to show kindness, how you could both do better next time and how you and your child could show kindness in the future.

Thenow.”ability to think and react rationally diminishes when angry, so practicing potential responses while in a calm, lowstress state is essential to helping children learn to apply those responses when they’re upset. Having this toolbox of responses to rely on also gives children the autonomy of deciding how best to respond to an emotionally difficult situation, which can lead to a sense of empowerment when they realize they chose to act kindly despite their emotions.

HOW TO RAISE FeaturesFamilyofCourtesyPhoto SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2022 POCONO FAMILY MAGAZINE© 7

“We often encourage children to be friends with everyone, but that’s unrealistic,” said Carter Peters from KinderCare’s Inclusion Services team. “We don’t have to be friends with everyone, but we do need to be friendly with everyone. When children learn to respect everyone, even those they don’t like, they help create a kinder, more welcoming community.”

For more tips about raising kind and caring children, visit kindercare.com.

While children are generally kind, it’s possible they might internalize societal messages that equate kindness with weakness. With a little help, children can develop a sense of empathy, which can help them have positive interactions with others whether they’re on the playground, in the classroom or at home.

The surgeon general issued an Advisory on Youth Mental Health Crisis to highlight the urgent need to address the growing concern.

SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2022 POCONO FAMILY MAGAZINE© 9

“It is normal for children to experience emotional distress as they develop and mature,” United States Surgeon General Vivek Murthy said. “However, the number of youth struggling with feelings of anxiety, depression and thoughts of suicide over the past decade have increased. The future well-being of our country depends on how we support and invest in the next generation.”

“The pandemic has been incredibly disruptive for youth since it has affected routines, access to social activities and virtually every aspect of their lives”

TIPS TO MITIGATE FOR YOUTH Mental Health Risks

T oday’s kids are experiencing unprecedented levels of stress and anxiety at home, school and in their communities. The COVID-19 pandemic, which affected kids in all those places, only exacerbated the problem.

“The pandemic has been incredibly disruptive for youth since it has affected routines, access to social activities and virtually every aspect of their lives,” said Robyn Knecht, director of counseling for St. Joseph’s Indian School, a Native American residential school that helps students move beyond the cycle of poverty, addiction and mental illness with an education and opportunities for a brighter future. “Offsetting those impacts requires an active response from trusted adults that promote healthy development and well-being.”

Create a Support System of Family, Peers and Teachers

The people surrounding youth influence their behavior directly and indirectly. Each child needs a team of actively involved adults at home, school and within the community leading by example and encouraging success. Similarly, encouraging friendships with peers who demonstrate positive habits and good decision-making skills can provide a sense of connectivity and beneficial peer pressure.

Encourage Academic Achievement & Aspirations

Even pre-pandemic, mental health challenges were the leading cause of disability and poor life outcomes in young people with up to 1 in 5 children ages 3-17 in the U.S. having a mental, emotional, developmental or behavioral disorder, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

If you’re concerned about your children, or another child close to you, consider these tips from Knecht and St. Joseph’s.

Not every student is destined to be valedictorian, but every student can give his or her best effort. Encourage and recognize effort in studies, be conscious of struggles and work with educators to find additional support when needed. Talk about the future and impress upon your child many careers require further training through college, trade school or another form of advanced education. Talk with your child about setting academic goals and equip him or her with the tools necessary to achieve them. Find things your child is passionate about and encourage participation in activities that foster development.

Set Clear Expectations for Behaviors & Values

Although it’s natural to test limits, kids need clear boundaries. Consistently communicating your expectations for behavior and values sets a bar for your child and demonstrates your care and commitment to his or her success. Backing up your expectations with reasonable consequences when your child falls short can help teach responsibility and accountability.

Promote Involvement in Social Activities

Pocono Tobyhanna, PA Robyn Knecht, director of counseling for St. Joseph’s Indian School

A sense of connectivity is important for humans at any age. Encouraging participation in group activities can help create opportunities to form bonds with other children whose families share similar values and interests. Examples include sports teams and religious groups, as well as age-appropriate jobs where teens can interact with other kids learning the value of hard work.

How your child responds to and navigates challenges is as important as the outcome. Teaching your child how to accept disappointment, navigate conflict and be solution-oriented in the face of adversity can serve him or her throughout life.

When paired with a healthy lifestyle, Florida Orange Juice has vitamin C, vitamin D (in fortified juices) and phytonutrients (naturally occurring plant compounds) and may help support a strong immune system.

• Vitamin C - Commonly associated with helping maintain and strengthen a healthy immune system by protecting cells and promoting the production and function of cells. One 6-8-ounce glass of OJ is an excellent source.

Unlike foods and beverages that contain added sugars, the natural sugar in 100% orange juice contains vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients. As one of nature's nutrient-rich foods, OJ is a convenient way to enhance whole fruit intake and reach daily recommendations. Plus, it can be used as a substitute for nutrient-poor foods and beverages, such as sugar-sweetened beverages, in the diets of children and adults.

Immune Support

"Setting the stage for success in the classroom starts with reliable morning routines the whole family can depend on."

"A growing number of research studies has revealed children who regularly drink 100% orange juice have higher intakes of key nutrients, higher quality diets and may have healthier lifestyle habits, like greater physical activity levels, than children who do not drink OJ," said Dr. Rosa Walsh, director of scientific research at the Florida Department of Citrus. "Study after study confirms that 100% orange juice not only has a place in the diets of children, but it can also serve as an easy way for parents to provide key nutrients without fear of adverse effects on body weight when served in moderation." Setting the stage for success in the classroom starts with reliable morning routines the whole family can depend on. Establishing a plan for each day before heading off for work or school is beneficial for staying on time and organized, and many families' mornings start with a nutritious breakfast. This school year, add better-for-you breakfast recipes like Orange Oatmeal or an Orangeberry Smoothie to the menu. These morning meals are powered by 100% orange juice, a delicious option that helps fuel the body with essential nutrients that support a healthy immune system and overall diet quality with no added sugar.

Because 1 cup of 100% orange juice counts as 1 cup of fruit, it's an easy way to contribute to your children's fruit intake. As a kid-favorite, it's a nutrient-dense beverage that helps increase the intake of key nutrients including vitamin C, folate, thiamin, magnesium, potassium and, in fortified juices, vitamin D and calcium.

"When parents and teachers connect, they can create a stronger support system," said Tyreca Elliott from KinderCare's education team. "Bridging the gap between home and school gives children continuity, improves academic outcomes and nurtures children's social and emotional well-being. When families and teachers work together, children can succeed."

Building connections with teachers opens lines of communication between home and school, allowing families to learn about their child's day and helping teachers feel supported.

A new school year can feel like uncharted territory for children, parents and teachers alike as they learn new things and meet unfamiliar faces. Building a relationship with your child's teacher can help create a positive school experience for everyone involved. Plus, teachers who connect with their classroom families help families feel seen, heard and represented in the classroom.

"Learning is a partnership between families and school," said Quiana Smith, a 15-year prekindergarten teacher. Consider these three tips from KinderCare teachers to help families create connections and build trust and collaboration with their child's teacher. Be Intentional. Ruby Villarreal, a preschool teacher of nearly 30 years, suggests meeting with your child's teacher before the first day of school to introduce your child and your family.

Raise any concerns you may have - no matter how big or small. Your child is the teacher's priority too, and he or she might have some tips and tricks to help you help your child.

Communicate About Communications. Drop off and pick up times can sometimes be too busy for more than a "hi" or "bye." Ask your child's teacher how he or she likes to t communicate, and share your preference, too. Let the teacher know if you would like a phone call during a lunch break for a quick update about your child or if you'd rather communicate via email or the school's app. Make a Big Difference with Little Chats. During pick up or drop off, try to leave time for a brief conversation. This could be a quick chat about something fun your child did over the weekend or why he or she might be having a tough day. It could also mean asking, "What can I ask my child about on the way home?" or finding out about activities you could do to help your child keep learning at home.

VOLUNTEER IN THE CLASSROOM

Heading back to school means stocking up on supplies, updating wardrobes and planning new routines for hassle-free mornings. This fall, as you prepare for the new school year, consider these ideas for supporting your children's teachers, too:

T hroughout the pandemic, teachers have gone above and beyond for their students, becoming not just educators, but also counselors, role models and friends to their students by supporting their overall well-being. Even so, only 52% of teachers feel valued by their communities, according to PDK International, a professional association for educators. What's more, teachers are more burnt out than ever, with 81% reporting their workloads have increased and 55% sharing they have less time for planning than before, according to a State of Teaching survey conducted by Adopt a Classroom.

With the extra roles and responsibilities many teachers have taken on in recent years, there aren't enough hours in the day to complete special projects or keep up with certain tasks. Ask teachers how you can lend a hand. That might mean spending

Supporting teachers isn't just about the classroom and supplies; you can also provide a helping hand by creating good habits and modeling the importance of education at home. Actions like creating routines that keep students on a comfortable, familiar schedule help teachers manage classrooms more effectively. You can also make communication with your children's teachers a priority so you're aware of concerns and can help address them early.

DONATE SCHOOL SUPPLIES Often, teachers dip into their own income to create fun, engaging learning experiences and supplement student supplies when they run low. In fact, the average teacher spends $745 on supplies for their classrooms that are not covered by school budgets. According to Adopt a Classroom's State of Teaching survey, 71% of teachers spent more of their own money on classroom materials in 2022 than during the previous year. You can ask teachers what supplies they need, or you can give back to teachers through Staples' Classroom Rewards program.

Learn the basics about your

Many people have financial goals - maybe it's to get an education, buy a car, purchase a home, or start a business - that require access to credit. However, if you are new to credit, trying to build a credit history can be daunting. It helps to know the basics about the FICO® Score.

score 5 THINGS TO KNOW PointBrandofCourtesyPhoto 30 POCONO FAMILY MAGAZINE © SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2022

A FICO Score summarizes your credit report into a three-digit number. Credit reports are maintained by the three nationwide credit bureaus, Experian, Equifax and TransUnion. The score includes measures on how long you've had credit, how much credit you have, how much of your available credit is being used and if you've paid on time. It helps lenders determine how likely you are to repay a loan. This, in turn, affects how much you can borrow and how much it will cost (e.g., the interest rate). "Knowing that access to credit is a key building block for economic inclusion and financial independence, FICO has been spearheading efforts to help more consumers gain access to credit, safely and responsibly," said Sally Taylor, vice president and general manager of FICO Scores. "Before FICO, human bias could play a factor in the decision." credit

Visit www.scoreabetterfuture.com to learn more. Whether your goal is purchasing your first home, going to college or financing a new car, it is helpful to envision a target credit score that allows you to achieve it. With that target in mind, and these tips and educational resources, you can start building a sustainable path toward a FICO Score that achieves your financial goal, regardless of your current credit experience.

Understanding your credit score and how to manage it doesn't have to be a mystery. There are many educational resources available, including free workshops supported by FICO where you can learn about your credit score directly from the experts.

FICO introduced alternative scores such as UltraFICO Score, which enhances credit bureau data with data not typically found in traditional credit bureau files, such as balance information from your consumer permissioned checking account. The recently introduced FICO Score 10T taps into trended data - a deeper look at traditional credit bureau data, the use of trended data considers a historical view such as account balances for the previous 24-plus months, giving lenders more insight into how individuals are managing their credit. People can also take steps to actively build their credit history. To help, here are five things to know if you are new to credit: Understand the basics about your score

If you have zero credit history, you can consider applying for a credit-builder loan or a secured credit card. Take advantage of new ways to establish credit More lenders are using newer scores that tap into alternative data sources, such as telecom, utilities and checking account data. To help establish credit history, consider opportunities with reputable lenders and the credit bureaus to proactively share your personal, responsible financial information (such as on-time rent payments). Actively monitor your score

Courtesy of Brand Point

But what if you are a young adult or immigrant with no credit score at all?

Ninety percent of the top U.S. lenders use FICO Scores to help them make lending decisions. To get a score, you need at least one credit account opened for six months or more and at least one account that is reporting to the credit bureaus in the last six months (Those criteria can be met with the same account.).

Research has shown that consumers who frequently check their credit score are more likely to have a higher overall score. There are several ways you can monitor your score. FICO works with over 200 institutions to provide FICO Scores free to consumers. You can check your monthly credit card statement, your online banking environment or go to myFICO.com to monitor your score. Demonstrate responsible borrowing and stay the course Your FICO Score is dynamic; it changes with your credit behavior. Your score today doesn't have to be your score tomorrow. Plan and stay the course with positive borrower behaviors that will be reflected in your credit file. Stay up to date on your bills, keep balances low and only apply for the credit you need.

Empower yourself with knowledge

Lenders want to include new borrowers. To help support this, FICO and lenders are using alternative data and innovative credit scoring techniques, while ramping up consumer credit education efforts.

Pet Whether heading to a party, celebrating on social media or greeting little ghouls and goblins at home, getting the entire family - including the four-legged family members - involved in the Halloween festivities can be the biggest treat of all. However, it's important to take some precautions to avoid spooking your pets, particularly if you'll be dressing them for the occasion.

In addition to keeping your pets out of the candy bowl and tempering their excitement during all the hustle and bustle, keep these tips from PetSmart's resident veterinarian and pet care expert, Dr. Jennifer Freeman, DVM, in mind to ensure your pets are comfortable in their costumes so they're able to celebrate stress-free.

Take baby steps. Start by trying a simple accessory, like a bandana, on your pets. See if they allow this and will walk around with it on for a few minutes. Not all pets like wearing clothes and some may become stressed or agitated while wearing a costume. However, many just need a little coaxing and positive reinforcement, such as praise and a treat.

Once you know your pets are comfortable in a costume, it's important to ensure the outfit allows them to walk, bark, meow and see without difficulty. Additionally, if your pets can easily trip over their legs, try another type of clothing. Make sure there aren't any accessories attached that may be easy for them to chew on or swallow.

KEEP AN EYE ON BODY LANGUAGE.

Pets can overheat easily, so ensure their clothing is not too bulky or heavy if it is warm on Halloween. Watch for elastic features around the paw area that may be restrictive and be certain there is enough room around the widest area of the chest to allow for proper air flow and ventilation.

Pets often communicate through body language and their behavior may let you know if they're stressed or uncomfortable. Pay extra attention to your costumed pets' body language while attending parties or events and watch for signs of discomfort such as pacing, hiding or refusing to move. Food Steps to Boost Students' Immunity FeaturesFamilyofcourtesyPhoto 34 POCONO FAMILY MAGAZINE © SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2022

Broccoli Tater Tots

Heading to the classroom means opening doors to opportunities for educational and social growth, but to keep students at school day after day, it's important to keep health top of mind. When close proximity to other children exposes them to illnesses like common colds, strong immune systems can be the difference between perfect attendance and a few days of absences.

Recipe courtesy of Healthy Family Project Prep time: 10 minutes Cook time: 25 minutes Servings: 4  2 russet potatoes, peeled, cut into 1/2-inch cubes  cold water  2 cups broccoli florets  1 large egg  1/2 cup panko breadcrumbs  1/8 teaspoon salt  1/8 teaspoon pepper  1/8 teaspoon garlic powder Preheat oven to 400 F. In large stockpot, cover potatoes with cold water. Cover and bring to boil over high heat. Reduce to low and simmer 3 minutes. Add broccoli; don't stir. Cover and cook 4-5 minutes, or until tender. Drain.

SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2022 POCONO FAMILY MAGAZINE© 35

In large bowl, mix egg, breadcrumbs, salt, pepper and garlic powder until just combined. In food processor, pulse potatoes and broccoli 8-10 times until finely grated. Add to breadcrumb mixture and stir to combine. Use tablespoon to scoop potato mixture into 40 mounds. Shape each into oval and place on parchment-lined baking sheet. Bake 10 minutes; flip and bake 10 minutes, or until golden brown. Drink Water Hydration plays a major role in keeping immune systems functioning properly by aiding the production of white blood cells, which are important for fighting off infection. Find more immunity-boosting recipes at HealthyFamilyProject.com.

To help boost your children's immunity, consider these tips from the experts at Healthy Family Project. Eat Healthy Foods Focusing on foods that are rich in antioxidants and vitamins can help boost immunity by protecting the body from free radicals that cause inflammation and damage cells. For example, vitamin C boosts the function of immune cells and foods high in fiber help keep the digestive system healthy. Broccoli provides a good source of vitamin C, but if your kids aren't big fans of the green veggie, turn to these Broccoli Tater Tots for an easy way to sneak some greens onto the family table. Due to their high vitamin C content, mandarins are another perfect addition to family diets. Their small size makes them easy to pack in lunches, toss in a bag or enjoy in a sweet treat like Frozen Creamsicle Yogurt Bites. Get Plenty of Sleep The Sleep Foundation recommends 9-11 hours of sleep each night for kids ages 6-13. Proper sleep helps regulate the body's biological rhythms, helping people stay healthy. Exercise Regularly Whether your children participate in sports or just enjoy playtime, encourage exercise to help boost the immune response, particularly during colder months when they may spend more time indoors. Reduce Stress Adults aren't the only ones who experience stress. Talk to your children about anxiety, stress and mental health, as stress can leave them feeling run down while weakening the immune system, leading to less energy for fighting illnesses.

In the world of design, what's old inevitably becomes new again, and a similar pattern is inspiring today's on-trend color palettes for home decor. The latest styles reflect reviving and comforting colors influenced by heritage and romance, lending to a look that is familiar in an individualistic way. Whether living through the romance of rural lifestyles, the comfort of home or the nostalgia from far-off times, some of today's most beloved design aesthetics celebrate the past, present and future while bringing balance, hope and comfort for you and your family to embrace.

Striking a balance between old and new can take many forms, as these styles show:

Reimagining classic, familiar tones allows you to achieve a design motif that is equal parts reminiscent and refreshing. "The Vintage Homestead Color Collection offers an effortless look that reveals the importance of being hopeful to find stability and balance," said Ashley Banbury, HGTV Home by Sherwin-Williams senior color designer. "Our 2023 Color Collection of the Year revives elements from the past that are perfectly paired with vintage, comfortable and classic colors."

•Heritage Revival An interest in reviving the past is evident in design trends like a remerging appreciation of antiques and vintage elements, such oversized furniture and traditional shapes. To capture this style, your design should focus on contrasting old and new for a mixand-match look. A cohesive color scheme can allow the various elements to stand on their own while working in harmony for an intentional design. For example, the HGTV Home by Sherwin-Williams 2023 Color Collection of the Year includes a combination of familiar tones that have been thoughtfully curated by design experts who borrow color and design concepts from the past for a hopeful future and a sense of belonging. Hues like Poetry Plum and Hot Cocoa evoke warmth and depth, while moderate shades like Restrained Gold and Glamour offer fresh ways to incorporate mid-range neutrals. Meanwhile, soft tones like Natural Linen and Cool Beige offer subtle color for lighter, brighter spaces.

PUMPKINS APLENTY:

A traditional glowing jack-o'-lantern may be one of Halloween's most recognized icons, but pumpkins can be used in plenty of other fun ways. You can dress them up with glitter and ribbon for a more elegant look or group a series of pumpkins in varied shapes and colors for a seasonal centerpiece. You can even give a pumpkin a coat of chalkboard paint and count down the days until Halloween.

CREEPY KIDS' CRAFTS: Get little ghosts and goblins into the Halloween spirit with hand-made decorations that make your seasonal decor equal parts sweet and spooky. Fold a black piece of construction paper down the middle and trace a child's hand and wrist, with the wrist extending over the folded edge. Cut along the traced line, leaving the fold intact, and when you unfold the paper, you'll have a bat to decorate. Add eyes and attach string to the top of the wings to hang and display.

GROSS AND GHOULISH: Some of the best Halloween displays have something in common: attention to detail. Get creative with your props and decorations to incorporate some unexpected attention-grabbers like brains in a jar. Place bunches of cauliflower in a clear glass container and cover with water died red.

SPOOKY SERVING: If you're entertaining for Halloween, incorporate spooky decor with your food and drinks to keep the theme going throughout the party. Use cauldrons as serving bowls and skeleton hands as serving spoons. Add plenty of cobwebs and other spooky accents to the table, and search for easy recipes that fit your theme. One fun idea for kids is baking sugar cookies in fun Halloween shapes and serving them with a selection of foodsafe syringes pre-filled with colored frosting.

CHARGING AT HOME

"EVs have high safety ratings and offer a quieter ride," said Kevin Quinn, vice president of auto claims at Mercury Insurance. "Add in low maintenance costs and the opportunity to reduce a vehicle owner's carbon footprint, and it becomes very appealing to consumers who are looking to buy a new car."

With more than 2 million electric cars on the road in the U.S., EV owners know that home charging is one of the most important aspects of owning an electric vehicle. Other than driving, cold weather zaps batteries of energy quickly. Using the air conditioning or heater, as well as uphill drives, also reduce range. Knowing that there might be more frequent charges under these demands makes home charging more appealing.

Auto Electric vehicles (EVs) are increasing in popularity as drivers consider the operating cost of owning an automobile as well as the environmental impact of their commutes. The number of electric vehicle models available has nearly doubled in the last few years and the market is getting charged up. The rising demand for electric vehicles has led to a larger inventory of new and used plug-ins in the auto market.

PointBrandofcourtesyPhoto 44 POCONO FAMILY MAGAZINE © SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2022

According to the J.D. Power 2022 U.S. Electric Vehicle Experience (EVX) Home Charging Study, 84% of EV owners regularly charge their vehicle at home. It costs about half as much to charge an EV at home as it does to charge at a public station. Home chargers also offer the convenience of being programmed so they draw power during off-peak hours, saving EV owners money. Most EVs come with a Level 1 charger allowing drivers to charge at their residence from a standard 120-volt household outlet. This method can take several hours, typically overnight, to get back most of the car's range. For this reason, many EV owners purchase Level 2 charging stations to be installed in their home. Level 2 charging allows for a quicker charge using a 240-volt outlet. "Those using portable chargers to charge their vehicles should consider carrying comprehensive auto insurance coverage," charging for electric vehicles: you know

While reports of fires happening while EVs are parked and charging are rare, owners should always be mindful when charging their vehicles. "Electric vehicles are still relatively new to the marketplace so automakers are still perfecting them," said Lee. "EV owners need to do their due diligence and make sure they're properly educated about their manufacturer's recommendations for proper charging."

"A standard homeowners' policy excludes coverage related to motor vehicles and their equipment, accessories and parts," said Bonnie Lee, vice president of property claims. "It's important that EV owners who install a Level 2 charger protect their homes as well as their vehicles. We had a policyholder put 300 battery packs together to charge his car and it didn't end well. The battery packs overheated and burned down the garage. Fortunately, his homeowners' insurance claim was covered, but it's best to have an electrician handle any EV charging station EVinstallations."ownerscan also charge their vehicles with portable chargers, but how owners obtained those chargers could make a difference on which type of insurance would be needed. If the portable charger came from the dealership with the vehicle, it would be covered by their auto collision or comprehensive insurance. However, if EV owners purchase a portable charger after buying their vehicle, they may need special equipment "Thosecoverage.using portable chargers to charge their vehicles should consider carrying comprehensive auto insurance coverage," said Quinn. "A standard homeowners' insurance policy excludes coverage related to motor vehicles, which means losses to vehicle equipment, accessories and parts are not covered."

EV owners looking to install a 240-volt power outlet or hardwired charging station to their home should speak with a trusted electrician who is trained, licensed and insured to install NEMA 14-50 outlets. These outlets are similar to what an electric dryer or oven is plugged into. Once installed, the charger would be considered part of the home and will need to be covered by supplemental insurance in the event of any type of loss.

When I was a teenager, (and despite the incredulity of my granddaughters, I was indeed a teenager once) my friends and I had a routine to prepare for a Saturday night out. Our little group of four would get together to try on different outfits and do our makeup. We didn’t even start to “get ready” until 11 pm. It was de rigor to arrive at our destination only after the scene was hopping – which meant never before midnight. In those bygone days, last call at the local haunts wasn’t until the wee hours of the morning, so we had plenty of time to check out the good-looking boys, dance, and roam from place to place on our circuit. I don’t remember the last time I had that kind of get-upToday,and-go.the only place I want to be at 11 pm on a Saturday night is in bed with a cup of chamomile tea and my true crime podcasts queued up. If you would have told me when I was a young lady that this would make me happy in my senior years, I might have said, “I will never be that boring.” Oh, well! I feel comfy and well-rested. A bonus of this low-key domestic bliss is that I always feel good on Sunday mornings. We’ve all experienced an evolution in fashion since the 1970s and I ask (replete with palm smacking forehead), “What were we thinking?” My excuse is that all of us have always been influenced by the trends, and it wasn’t my fault. Thankfully, those 6-inch chunky heels on top of platforms have given way to the “sensible shoe.” As a woman “of a certain age,” I simply can’t risk “falling off” my shoes - and I’m pretty sure that would happen if I were up that high; My sense of balance isn’t what it used to be. I remember riding home in our family car lying on the shelf in the window behind the back seat. Now I wouldn’t dream of transporting my grandson anywhere unless he’s strapped into his $500 padded “space capsule.” I rode my bike and roller skated without a helmet. Egads! Am I a walking miracle? How have I managed to live this long? Ignorance was bliss. But knowing better is divine. The world turns. Things have changed. Some for better, some for worse. I’ve changed; and only for the better, of course!

P.S. On second thought, I am boring. I wish I could send an e-mail to 17-year-old me to make her laugh. (Although, practically speaking, she’d have no way to receive it). I’d tell her, “Someday you are going to be absolutely thrilled by how great the lint trap is in your new clothes dryer! Then I’d tell her, “But, don’t worry. You turn out to be a hip, happening, cool Granny in so many other ways!”Roseanne

longer metaphorically or physically in the clouds. Let’s get real - the closer to the ground I am, the better! Since we’re talking fashion, what about those micro-mini skirts? Sharon Stone’s classic Basic Instinct scene where she purposefully flashed what we all maneuvered and contorted to hide every time we sat down or bent over was a shocking reminder of how close we came to disaster for an entire decade. What a way to live. “Easy-breezy” is now my motto. Make fun of me if you must for my long, flowing muumuu, but I flutter, glide, dip, and twist with the abandon of a toddler. (Although, I can’t get my feet into my mouth, muumuu or not.) I used to love the TV program “The Time Tunnel.” The protagonist was rescued from his predicament at the very last millisecond of each show by being jettisoned through timeonly to land in the middle of another harrowing scene. We had to wait a whole week to see what would happen next. How did we have the patience? Like you, I imagine, I am now a Netflix et. al. binger. I have no patience. None whatsoever. Is it technology that has ruined me? Or am I morphing into the quintessential cranky old lady – just because? Are you old enough to remember when encyclopedias were in book form? A salesman would knock on our door every so often and sell my parents the next volume. If we had a question, we had to look it up. If the answer wasn’t readily available at home (because maybe we were only up to the letter “N”), we’d walk two miles to the local public library, peruse the card catalogue and stacks, or ask the reference librarian for help. It had to be a very important question to warrant the effort of that long trek. How did we manage without, “Alexa, [fill in ANY question]”? Or without instantaneous results from Google and Bing searches? Really? Why weren’t we thoroughly frustrated by not immediately having access to the recipe for Baba Ghanoush or knowing how many children the hot celebrity of the day had? Do I delude myself into thinking I know so much more now? The truth is, I don’t even know my own daughter’s telephone number; if I lost my phone, I’d be up the proverbial creek without a paddle. On the other side of the coin, I watched YouTube videos and learned how to change out a toilet myself. On balance, I prefer instant access to anything I want to know and allowing electronics to remember things for me. After six and a half decades of living there’s too much stuff in my head and no storage room left for more. My brain RAM is at 99% capacity. In today’s age of gluten-free, vegan, organic everything, can you imagine the faux pas of keeping an Entenmann’s cake on top of the refrigerator in case company stops by? Or mixing up “Tang” instead of fresh-squeezed? The horror the “toasted vanilla-extra cream-caramel drizzle-venti coffee” crowd would feel if they knew about Sanka?

The Pocono Mountains Community Fundraiser exists to provide a safety net of support for non-profit organizations in Monroe County. Started in 2004 and originally sponsored and spearheaded by locally based vaccine manufacturer Sanofi Pasteur, the event has grown to include a team of presenting sponsors. As all costs are covered by these sponsors, 100% of ticket sales, sponsorships, and donations for each event benefit the non-profit recipients. The Pocono Mountains Community Fundraiser, which has been hosted at a variety of venues and has become the ultimate networking event of the summer.
