THE WORLD IS OUR OYSTER
SPRING SUMMER 22 —
Dear Traveler We cannot find the words to properly express how over-the-moon excited we are to finally have a new issue of PoeGo coming out after two long years. The past couple of years have taken us all through unprecedented times, times in which even the most intrepid of travelers were forced to put away our passports and stay home. We are pleased to say that 2022 looks to be the year that we will start dusting off our suitcases and beginning our grand adventures again. We feel incredibly fortunate that so many of our loyal Poe Travel clients have stuck with us through these turbulent times, and we have plenty of new faces to appreciate as well. The spirit of the adventurer is one that we see time and time again in our clients, and, like us, you all have expressed over and over through the past two years how much you cannot wait to travel again. So—here’s your book of inspiration! In this issue of PoeGo, you’ll find pages and pages of inspo for your great “return to travel.” Whether you want to venture to atmospheric Edinburgh, brave the ice in Antarctica or Alaska, get to know Germany, return to London (forever one of our favorite cities!), meet wonderous wildlife in the Galapagos, cycle winding backroads in Nova Scotia, make a magnificent journey into newly reopened Australia/
New Zealand, or escape to a private island, we have you covered. And then some! When we considered what we wanted to include in the first issue of PoeGo in so long, we knew that what we wanted above all else was for these pages to inspire your wanderlust. We wanted you to find something of yourself here, some nugget from your bucket list, something to remind you why you love traveling as much as we do. To all of our dear clients who have stayed with us during these times, thank you. We hope that you are ready to get back out and explore this big, wide world once again because there is still so much beauty to discover, so many memories to be made. Without further ado, start turning these pages and let the wheels start turning in your mind as well as you start planning your getaways in 2022 and beyond. We are so pleased to once again implore you to
Please go away!
Your friendly travel agents, Margaret & Ellison

AGENT REPORTS
A Special Birthday in the South of France Three generations of Ellison’s family journeyed to the South of France late last year to celebrate a very special occasion...
According to our late-founder, Fred Poe, his daughter Ellison had “circled the globe by age six.” Given that Ellison’s parents founded Poe Travel back in 1961, it should come as no surprise that they are a family passionate about travel, so being grounded for two years hasn’t been easy on them. However, we’re thrilled to report that Ellison’s family jetted off to the South of France late last year to celebrate her mother, Tina’s, 83rd birthday. Their trip started with a lovely long layover at London Heathrow. They used the opportunity to visit Fortnum & Mason to enjoy rosé bubbles and avocado toast, an old tradition. Ellison even ran into her favorite waiter, Elyson, who pronounces his name just like hers! The little jaunt to Fortnum’s felt like a trip down memory lane as she reacquainted herself with international travel. After their few hours in London, off they flew to Marseille, where they picked up their rental car and hit the road. The group first ventured to a dear friend’s house in the Luberon, where they spent four glorious days catching up in fabulous surroundings. They spent time cooking and relaxing by the pool as a family. They visited the charming town of Lourmarin, shopped in the local market, and stopped at their favorite café for a drink and people-watching. For Tina’s birthday, they celebrated in style with a visit to Hotel du CapEden-Roc for a fabulously fun blowout birthday lunch to celebrate their matriarch. The team at the hotel went above and beyond, and everyone even sang to sweet Tina on her special day! Ellison and her mother, Tina, tapping into their artsy side in the South of France
Hotel Spotlight: Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc The gorgeous Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc made an unforgettable setting for Tina’s birthday lunch. The team at Poe Travel has loved this hotel for a long time. It is the perfect place from which to discover the captivating beauty of the Côte d’Azur, a region rich in art and culture. Their private bay and parkland give the hotel a secluded feel. They also have three elegantly appointed private villas which are enshrouded by trees for a more exclusive experience. Plus, the dining on offer is the stuff of legend, and Ellison had only fabulous things to say about it. They spent the latter half of the trip at the Château Saint-Martin in Vence, just outside of Nice and smack-dab in the French Riviera. Hotel Spotlight: Château Saint-Martin & Spa Ellison called Cap-Eden-Roc’s sister hotel, the Château Saint-Martin, “nirvana.” The Château captures the sexy feel of the French Riviera, enhancing all the region’s natural beauty with a little French elegance. The dazzling pool is set against the impossibly blue horizon, but there truly isn’t a bad view to be had. Each guestroom features light interiors and astounding panoramic views of the Côte d’Azur, from Nice to Cannes. Should you choose one of their private villas, you will be speechless at the view and at the sense of comfort and privacy. Ellison especially loved the hotel’s four large and fluffy pet bunnies, who hop around the gardens. They enjoyed a magical lunch at La Colombe d’Or in St. Paul de Vence, which was followed by a visit to the Fondation Maeght, France’s first independent art foundation, to see
a special exhibition. Ellison was so impressed by how seriously all the establishments in France, including the museum, took their COVID regulations, checking vaccine cards for entry into museums, cafés, hotels, restaurants, etc. Ellison found it incredibly comforting to know that things were being handled so well. On their last day, the group relaxed with a long lunch by the pool at the Château Saint-Martin. They spent the afternoon enjoying incredible food and the sun for which the South of France is so well-known. They stayed so long that they ended up simply sitting and watching the moon, listening to the crickets, and reflecting on their first family trip in what felt like forever. And what a triumph it was!

IRELAND
Margaret This year, I am hoping to hop over to Ireland to explore the Emerald Isle with my daughter, Rebecca. I also want to jet over to Hawaii to visit the Four Seasons properties there, which are absolutely fantastic. That was a trip I had planned in 2020 that, of course, was never to be! Otherwise, I’m torn between wanting an adventure in Europe or finding a secluded beach somewhere to read and enjoy the peace and quiet, BUT I definitely don’t want to waste any more time after losing two precious years of travel! Ellison The list this year is long and varied, with many exciting possibilities in the works! I have a big birthday this year, and I want to celebrate it properly. There’s no excuse needed to return to beautiful France, and I also want to immerse myself in the absolute charm of the Cotswolds in the UK. I’m dying to get over to Montenegro and Croatia for some fun in the sun. Closer to home, I have excursions to Chicago and Pittsburgh planned, and I also want to skip down to Cuernavaca in Mexico! Just so over-the-moon excited to be able to travel again! Breana I have several trips in the books this year. I’ve lived in the UK for three years now, but because travel has been so restricted, I haven’t been able to explore much of Europe yet! I’m going to Greece in May to spend some time in Athens and Crete. I’ll also be popping over to Amsterdam in June, where I want to visit the Anne Frank House, cycle along the canals, and drink some Dutch beer. I’m hoping to do a girls’ weekend in Paris at some point this year too. In the US, I’ll be doing a road-trip around New England in October to enjoy the fall foliage and celebrate my 30th birthday!
Now that the world is reopening once again, the team at Poe Travel is ready to Go Away and get exploring again. But where will we go first?
Where in the World are We Off to This Year?
UTAH
It may not come as a surprise to learn that the team at Poe Travel is full of keen and intrepid travelers. We love nothing more than packing our suitcases, pulling out our passports, and hitting the road (or air!). Being largely unable to travel for the past couple of years has been just as hard on us as it has been for our beloved clients, so we are overjoyed to have some exciting plans in the calendar for this year. Let’s see where the team is off to in 2022...
ALASKA
ITALY
Nancy I’m still in the planning stages, but I’m looking forward to some travels both domestic and international. This spring, I want to return to Colorado and Utah to explore the National Parks, one of my favorite parts of traveling in the US. Then, in the fall, I’d like to make my great return to Europe with a trip to lovely London. CROATIA
AMSTERDAM
Angela I have a few trips within the US planned this year. This spring, I’ll visit my daughter in Chicago, where we are going to see Lorde and Remi Wolf, which we’re very excited about! I’m thinking of spending Christmas in Alaska, which feels very remote and otherworldly even though it’s part of the States! I have a brotherin-law in Fairbanks, which is a perfect base for snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and spotting the Northern Lights. I also want to visit The Lodge at Black Rapids (about 2.5 hours from Fairbanks) and possibly the Borealis Base Camp, which is near his cabin! Erika Firstly, I want to do some short weekend trips to the National Parks this year, since there is so much natural beauty to be found right here at home. I particularly want to visit Arches and Canyonlands National Parks in Utah and Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado. For a longer adventure, I want to travel to Italy this fall, exploring Florence, Rome, and maybe Naples or the Amalfi Coast. It’s still in the planning stages, but it’s so exciting to be able to make plans again!

EXPERIENCES
There’s so much going on in splendid Germany this year, so we spoke with Thomas Tritschler of Curated & Bespoke—who knows more about Germany than anyone!— to discuss the great return to the land of beer and sausages.
SPRING SUMMER 22 —
An Über Exciting Look at Germany POE TRAVEL | What makes Germany a such a fabulous destination as the world begins its big return to travel? THOMAS TRITSCHLER | Germany has always been a fabulous destination; it holds so much variety and natural beauty. From the alpine mountain ranges to beautiful lakes to the northern coastline, there is something for everyone to enjoy. Things also look hopeful for Germany to be considered, once again, a safe destination for international travelers. Your impressive experience also brings a lot to the table, doesn’t it? I have always enjoyed working with people. I spent many years in England and the United States as a hotelier and had a classic education from the kitchen right up to being a hotel’s general manager. Through all of this, understanding the different mentalities and special interactions has always been given the utmost importance. I was fortunate enough to learn this approach in some of the most renowned hotels such as London’s The Connaught, amongst others. These experiences left an impression in how to meet the needs of discerning clients by paying attention to the little things, something I still remember every day. How can you make things as easy as possible for our clients to visit Germany? This year especially, it will be more important than ever to work with only the most reliable partners. During the pandemic, I spent a lot of time reevaluating partners, guides, drivers, and hotels to ensure that we are on the same page
as to what is important to me and our guests. Living in the US for several years gave me an excellent idea of how to meet and exceed American travelers’ expectations. Successful trip planning will require a sensible approach; that coupled with our expertise in itinerary planning should make for some spectacular journeys this year for our guests. What’s going on in Germany this year that has you excited? Firstly, we are most excited by the general feeling that comes from international travelers returning! The Passion Play in Oberammergau takes place this year from May 14th to October 2nd. It only happens once every ten years, and we have had to wait an additional two, so we are thrilled that this is going ahead. It’s also hugely exciting that the Neue Nationalgalerie—a modern art museum that is part of the Berlin State Museums—has finally been reopened after six long years of construction. We are so excited to get to know this special building again. Which parts of Germany work well for those looking for something a bit quieter? There’s a lot going on in southern Germany during the summer with the Passion Play in Oberammergau, the G7 summit at Schloss Elmau (late June), and Oktoberfest in Munich (September 17-October 3). Those looking for peace and quiet in the south should visit in autumn. It’s a beautiful time to visit anyway because southern Germany and the alpine regions are known for sensational Indian summers.
For times between now and then, northern Germany would make for a lovely trip. You have Berlin, Hamburg, the almost untouched lake landscapes between the two, and the islands in the North Sea and the Baltic Sea. There’s also the cities of the Hanseatic League along the coast, with castles, palaces, and arts and crafts galore. There is so much to explore, with spring and summer being the ideal time. What are your favorite experiences to organize for visitors to Germany? I love planning experiences that are not open to the public, particularly authentic historical experiences. Accompanying one of my guides to their hometown to see it through their eyes provides invaluable insights time and time again. This is particularly true in historic Lübeck, where guests can learn the history and experience some of the city’s finest craftsmanship, from rare glassware to delicious chocolate. Alternatively, being able to glance behind the scenes at one of Germany’s oldest porcelain manufacturers in Munich, learning as they produce and curate the paste, burning and decorating the most delicate items...it’s fascinating. Then again, it’s hard to beat a guided hike up a beautiful Bavarian mountain—preferably on a weekday so that you have the mountain almost to yourself as you work your way to the summit for the ultimate reward: an unforgettable view.

Island Hopping: From Ireland to Iceland Usually when you think of island hopping, you’re thinking of sandy white beaches. While we love that sort too, we are enchanted with the idea of an Irish exploration followed by an Icelandic adventure. Go beyond Dublin and explore a side of Ireland you’ve never seen with a stay at one (or more) of our favorite hidden gem Irish country estates. Afterwards, take an easy flight to Iceland to explore in style, courtesy of our friends at HL Adventure.
Emerald Isle Explorations Ireland is full to the brim with authentic experiences and beautiful hotels, from the cities of Dublin and Galway to the lush Irish countryside. We thought we’d shine a spotlight on three you may not have heard of previously, all in very different parts of Ireland. Stay at one (or all!) of them to explore their local areas in-depth. We will, of course, design a customized itinerary for you. Ballyfin Demesne, County Laois Only 80 minutes from Dublin Airport, Ballyfin has long been a favorite of Ellison’s, who stayed there a few years ago. She’s not the only one; Ballyfin has been enchanting visitors for centuries. Ballyfin is the most lavish Regency mansion in Ireland. Over the last decade, the estate has been painstakingly restored, and the loving quality of this restoration shines throughout. Ballyfin reflects the impressive quality of the Irish country houses of old, with each of the twenty rooms and new Gardener’s Cottage individually designed with Irish art and antiques. This is the place to go to celebrate. Spend your days partaking in country pursuits such as shooting, fishing, horse riding, falconry, cycling, or rambling walks. In the evenings, why not don a period costume to enjoy a lavish dinner? You know Ellison was all over that! Castlemartyr, County Cork Delve into Ireland’s south coast at Castlemartyr Resort, only a half-hour outside of Cork. This five-star 18thcentury manor house once more reflects its grandeur of the past and lies adjacent to the ruins of an 800-year-old castle originally built by the Knights Templar.
The resort’s 220 acres are perfect for meandering past streams, parklands, and a tranquil lake. There’s a lot to do on the hotel grounds with an 18-hole golf course, spa, horse and carriage tours, whiskey experiences, and more. The hotel’s elegant interiors make it a place you won’t want to leave. However, there’s lots to explore in the area, and Castlemartyr is a fabulous base. We can arrange a foodie tour in nearby Cork City. Also of note is the pretty seaside village of Kinsale, perfect for a walking tour and the best pub lunch around. Avid golfers will also jump at the chance to tee off at Old Head, a course with some of the most spectacular views in Ireland. Sheen Falls Lodge, County Kerry The south-west of Ireland is legendary for its beauty, and a stay at Sheen Falls Lodge places you right in the thick of it. With heather-covered mountains and cascading waterfalls, the scenery is only enhanced by the incredible and unforgettable Irish hospitality at Sheen Falls. Feast on salmon caught in the nearby river as you sip some of the world’s best whiskey, and then retire to your character-filled room or villa for a relaxing evening. Without ever leaving the estate, partake in salmon fishing in the river, tennis, mountain climbing, golf, falconry, and horse riding through breathtaking countryside. They can also arrange specialty experiences such as a chocolatemaking workshop, pottery lessons, and treasure hunts. Set on 300-acre estate overlooking Kenmare Bay, Sheen Falls is on the doorstep of some of the best sights around, from the Ring of Kerry to the Beara Peninsula to the Killarney Lakes, all of which you can discover with a local expert guide by car or—if you’re up for a little adventure—by bicycle or kayak!
Discover the Land of Fire & Ice Before you arrive in Iceland, we will design a bespoke itinerary matched to your interests. HL Adventure’s expert local guides and drivers will make sure that you have the adventure of a lifetime while exploring their marvel of a country. Here are some (but definitely not all) experiences to add to your Iceland bucket list: • Take a whale safari on a RIB boat followed by a helicopter sightseeing tour over the geothermal areas surrounding Reykjavik • Bathe in a hidden geothermal pool in a mountain canyon in western Iceland • Take a Super Jeep up Langjökull Glacier for snowmobiling • Explore the Golden Circle on a thrilling buggy safari • Make your way across an historic lava field or race across black sand beaches beside the raging torrents of the Atlantic Ocean on an ATV • Spot the Northern Lights outside your hotel window • Gain new perspectives as you walk behind waterfalls and hike glaciers • Kayak around icebergs on the Glacier Lagoon • Unearth an underground world of lava tunnels at the Raufarhólshellir Cave to witness the inner workings of a volcanic explosion • Meet Icelandic horses on one of many incredible horse trails, for riders of all experience levels • Grab your ice axe for an easy adventure across a glacier • Explore stunning crystal ice caves in the winter months

We’re All About the Adriatic! Oh, how we have longed to return to Croatia, land of the clearest waters imaginable shining against white pebble beaches. Ancient walled cities, magnificent lakes, and islands dotting the coast. . . What more could you ask for? Dearest Vanja of Adriatic Travel Collection creates unforgettable Croatian experiences like this one... DAY 1 Start your Croatian adventure off in Split, which many locals consider to be the most beautiful city in the world. In the afternoon, enjoy a privately guided walking tour with a local guide, the best way to get to know this dynamic city. Along with wonderful museums and architecture, you’ll find an abundant green market, the famous Riva for coffee, and so many friendly people. Your guide will show you all the best spots, including the Diocletian’s Palace, built 1,700 years ago by the Roman Emperor. DAY 2 It’s off the beaten path today and into Krka National Park, one of the most fascinating regions of Croatia (and that’s saying something!). Right off the bat on your arrival at the national park, you’ll see the Skradinski Buk waterfall, which will knock your socks off. After this photo op, your guide will take you along the lesser-known routes. Hop on a private boat which will take you almost directly under the Roski Slap waterfall and take a dive into turquoise waters. Savor lunch in a rustic tavern as you dip your feet in the river, taking in the sight of the small stone houses and watermills found throughout the park. DAY 3 Croatia is a gem on the Adriatic, so it’s only fitting to explore these mesmerizing waters. Start the morning with your skipper and sailor, your hosts for the next couple of days as you cruise the Croatian coast on your private yacht. Cruise toward the Pakleni Islands, a breathtaking archipelago. This chain of eleven islets features azure waves, sandy coves surrounded by pine forests, and gentle breezes scented by aromatic herbs. Stop for swims in hidden bays along the way and dine on local cuisine in the little restaurants scattered around the islands.
Continue to Hvar for the night, known as the sunniest island of Dalmatia and home to a wealth of wildflowers and fragrant fields of lavender and rosemary. DAY 4 Hvar’s southern shore is the stuff of dreams and is surprisingly still a hidden treasure only explored by the locals. Venture here on your yacht for an intimate look at pristine nature in hidden coves only accessible by sea. Swim at secluded beaches framed by lush vineyards. Swim underneath (or jump, if you dare!) a 200-meter cliff. Afterwards, visit one of Croatia’s most famous wineries for views over the sea and some of the best white wine in the area. This evening, enjoy a bohemian picnic in the most intimate setting—a table for two in an olive grove—timed perfectly to coincide with the spectacular Hvarian sunset. DAY 5 Back on your yacht, cruise toward Korčula Island, the birthplace of Marco Polo that is famed for its wine. Spend today on a sea kayaking adventure through the pearls of Korčula’s archipelago. Paddle around islets with the stunning Sveti Ilija Mountain as the backdrop, learning about local histories and traditions and taking in jaw-dropping views.
According to legend, world traveler Marco Polo was born on Korčula Island. You can visit the house he was reputedly born in, which enjoys spectacular panoramic views.
DAY 6 On your way to Dubrovnik, stop in to see the three largest of the Elaphiti Islands— Koločep, Šipan, and Lopud—formerly the favorite summer residences of Dubrovnik aristocracy. Here, you can get adventurous with snorkeling or cliff jumping, or head to a beach club for some glamorous relaxation. On Šipan, visit one of the many villas dotting the hillside, Sorkočevič Summer Mansion, and then return to Dubrovnik. DAY 7 Your guide will show you some secrets of Dubrovnik this morning, including the Gornji Ugao Tower on the city’s ancient walls, which until recently was closed to the public. After your morning of history, you’ll be zipped 15 minutes outside of the city for a true gem, Vardia Vineyard on the hill of Malastica, which overlooks the Adriatic. After a short hike through the olive groves (or a buggy ride), meet the winemaker, Ivica, for a tour. Watch the sun go down while tasting Ivica’s wine and olive oil. DAY 8 Your last day in Croatia takes you outside of the hustle and bustle of Dubrovnik for a tasty surprise in the hilly Dubrovnik Riviera town of Ston. Here, you can walk part of the Great Wall of Croatia’s fortification walls, sample some of the best oysters and mussels in the world, and visit a family-owned winery. It’s the most blissful way to spend a day in the endless Croatian sunshine.

Take the Backroads from Sea to Shining Sea Our friends at Backroads are legendary for their active itineraries. With options for cycling, hiking, walking, and more, their fabulous journeys are the perfect way to explore destinations you’ve always wanted to while also burning off some extra calories. Backroads recently shared three of their favorite North American itineraries with us. We love them because there’s a little bit of everything mixed in: the chance for a Nova Scotian getaway, mountainous views in Colorado, and a sunny break in Southern California.
With activity levels for all abilities, you’re able to make the trip what you want it to be. Several routes and a range of levels are offered each day to ensure that everyone is having a great time, and luxe accommodations are chosen with care. These experiences are versatile, suiting couples and groups of friends just as well as solo travelers. While we’re sure you’re bound to get a good workout on these journeys one way or another, the most challenging part by far will be choosing which of these three itineraries most tickles your fancy.
Break a Sweat in Santa Barbara 5 days, 4 nights From $3799 per person (double occupancy)
Pedal through Nova Scotia 6 days, 5 nights From $3249 per person (double occupancy) Set your wheels in motion along Nova Scotia’s beautiful Bay of Fundy. As you cycle along, passing by historical towns and colorful houses, gaze out at the crashing waves of the North Atlantic. Make stops along the way for fresh Nova Scotian lobster, halibut, and farm-totable produce. You won’t be able to resist the charm of village life and the warm maritime hospitality. Trip Highlights: • Scenic cycling on picturesque country roads and coastal lanes, past colorful fishing villages and fertile farmland • Salty ocean breezes on a private boat charter from Lunenburg’s historic waterfront • A trip back in time as you visit Annapolis Royal, the birthplace of Canada and former capital of Nova Scotia • Incredible rock formations as you cycle along the Bay of Fundy, home of the world’s highest tides
Natural beauty is the theme of this active tour from Santa Barbara to Los Olivos. In this stunning part of the country, oak trees and sunlit chaparral line hiking trails right up to mountain peaks, and sandy beaches make the perfect post-ride sunset spots. Kayak in the Pacific Ocean, and then reward your efforts with a crisp glass of wine in a sea of vineyards. Your exhilarating activities are complemented by divinely crafted cuisine in some of the finest hotels in the state. This is more than a destination; it’s a way of life.
Cycle the Rockies in Aspen 4 days, 3 nights From $4399 per person (double occupancy)
Trip Highlights: • World-class luxury hotels, from a beachfront gem to an inland oasis • Hiking, biking, and kayaking from the Santa Ynez Valley to the Pacific amid Santa Barbara’s breathtaking landscapes • The tasting rooms and enchanting ranches of Los Olivos, tucked away in Southern California’s wine country • Superb cuisine at farm-to-table meals paired to perfection with iconic coastal scenery
This four-day getaway to America’s most luxurious mountain town will introduce you to all of Aspen, including its wilder side. This is what Aspen is about: the balance between the rugged and the refined. By day you’ll find ghost towns and jagged peaks, the Elk Mountains, and serpentine roads winding through deep forests. By night, discover all of Aspen’s edible delights. This wonderful contrast brings together all the best elements of the good life, which is the only kind of life in Aspen. Trip Highlights: • Aspen’s vibrant social life, a chic getaway for outdoor adventurers and lovers of the finer things in life alike • Cycling winding roads through the Elk Mountains with a backdrop of snowcapped peaks and dramatic valleys • Backroads’ premiere lodging, Hotel Jerome, and the convenience of unpacking only once • All the options offered by downtown Aspen, with mountain biking, rafting, hiking, world-class shopping, and more right at your doorstep

AGENT REPORTS
Margaret in Maine There’s nothing quite like New England in the autumn: fall foliage, crisp weather, and leaves crunching underfoot on long walks. Margaret experienced this for herself once again last year in one of her favorite destinations: Maine.
Flight & Arrival Margaret’s trip got off to a flying start as she flew to Portland, Maine. The American Airlines aircrafts looked brand-new, her flights ran on time, and she enjoyed blue skies throughout for a seamless day of travel. Portland Airport is compact, which also created a stress-free environment on the other side of their flights. On arrival, the group picked up their rental car and made the two-hour drive to Margaret’s very favorite inn. Hotel Spotlight: The Inn at Sunrise Point Anyone who has spoken to Margaret about Maine will know that she loves this beautiful inn and has returned multiple times. The Inn at Sunrise Point is located outside of Camden in Lincolnville. You’ll find the hotel down a gravel road and right on the water, providing guests with unobstructed views. Margaret describes it as “a little piece of heaven.” Margaret reports that the daily breakfast at the inn is as delicious as ever, beginning with some to-die-for scones each morning. The scones, which come in several tasty
flavors, are such a hit that you can buy the Scone Goddess mix to enjoy them at home. Nearby, you’ll find Rockland and Camden, where the group spent the next couple of days exploring. MK’s Rockland Faves: • Lighthouses galore: a must in Maine! • Primo for a fabulous farmto-table meal • The Farnsworth Art Museum • Frontier Maple Sugarworks (100% pure and beautifully dark amber in color) • Project Puffin Visitor Centre • Lobster festivals in August • McLoon’s for lobster (though it closes after the summer months) – you’ll find other places listed online, but Margaret assures us this is the very best! MK’s Camden Faves: • Retail therapy at Glendarragh Lavender farm for all-natural soaps and lotions plus handwoven Irish woolen throws and cashmere scarves • Jo Ellen Designs for home accents and gifts • The “BEST” wooden spoons (by Jonathan) made of beautiful cherry wood at Conklin’s Mercantile • Fresh & Co. for a cozy dinner by the waterfront featuring global cuisine like Brazilian fish stew and moussaka—plus, there is some lovely local artwork on display! Hotel Spotlight: The White Barn Inn & Spa Next, the group made their way to Kennebunkport, stopping en-route at the iconic (and enormous!) LL Bean store in Freeport, open 24 hours a day for anything one could want for all things outdoors.
The picturesque White Barn Inn & Spa is in a quiet neighborhood away from the main road, only a ten-minute walk to the beachfront. Margaret loved the firepit surrounded by Adirondack chairs and hampers with all the fixings for s’mores! During the summer, they do lobster bakes around the pool. Yum! Margaret stayed in a lovely room on the third floor, which featured a spacious bath and a beautiful fireplace. Fortunately, the great weather rendered the fireplace unnecessary, but it created a wonderful, cozy feel. Margaret’s group enjoyed a wine and cheese tasting led by the hotel’s sommelier, which Margaret described as “divine.” You can’t go wrong when trying delicious wines and champagnes with only the best cheeses, can you? Best of all, the hotel is part of our Virtuoso network, meaning we can extend extra amenities to our clients. Kennebunk & Surrounds Margaret started her final day in Maine with delicious lemon and ricotta pancakes at The White Barn Inn, which she wholeheartedly recommends. Afterwards, they headed to Kennebunk and the surrounding villages to meander, taking time to visit the seaside as well as the interior. She was charmed by the quintessential, picturesque quality of small-town America, with one town seemingly running into the next. They spent the day wandering and stopping along the way, simply taking in whatever took their fancy. Margaret only found herself wishing she had had more time in her favorite East Coast haven. Had she extended her trip, she would have elected to venture to Cape Cod’s Chatham Bars Inn for a spectacular oceanfront view. But hey, there’s always next summer!
Journey through the heart of Europe aboard award-winning ships offering the luxury of space for an average of only 150 guests. An Edinburgh Escape The Poe Travel team hasn’t been able to venture to Europe as much as we’d like in the past couple of years, but our UK-based Marketing Director, Breana, was able to sneak away to Edinburgh for a long weekend and came home completely enchanted. Edinburgh is one of the world’s most charming and atmospheric cities, full as it is of winding cobbled streets, centuries of history, enchanting architecture, and quirky nooks around every corner that tempt you to explore just a little longer. Breana has been to Edinburgh a couple of times now, and each time, she winds up swept away in the magic of this wonderfully compact city. She was, therefore, more than happy to return last summer! After a quick 45-minute flight up from London Stansted, Breana touched down in Edinburgh for a weekend of delights. A much-needed stop for a boozy brunch
Applicable to select sailings; restrictions apply.
was made, and then Breana headed out to explore one of her greatest passions and something of which Edinburgh has no shortage: bookshops! From bigger shops like Blackwell’s and Waterstones to hidden gems such as Armchair Books and Tills, Breana was overjoyed time and time again to be surrounded by books in such a beautiful setting. As a Harry Potter fan, she also spent a good deal of time on Victoria Street, whose colorful shopfronts are said to have inspired Diagon Alley in the bestselling series. She stopped in at Museum Context to peruse the Harry Potter-themed merchandise and décor, and she also recommends making time for lunch at Oink for some of the best pulled pork outside of the South. In a sporty twist, Breana also spent some time in a pub one evening watching soccer (or, as it’s called in the UK, football!) and enjoying a good old pint. A twilit walk back to her hotel afterwards on that temperate summer evening was the perfect complement to a perfect day, she thought, as she looked back over Edinburgh bathed in dusky light.

LODGING WE
LOVE
Hungry to return to Italy? We are!
SPRING SUMMER 22 —
19
Immerse Yourself in Italia with Belmond With interest in travel to Italy ramping up for 2022 and beyond, we decided to take a closer look at a few of Belmond’s Italian gems. Oh, how we have missed travel to one of our very favorite countries: Italy. Thanks to Belmond, we have options galore for our great return to the Bel Paese—they have a whopping NINE Italian properties! From the iconic Hotel Cipriani in Venice to the sparkling Grand Hotel Timeo in Sicily, Belmond’s Italian hotels span the width and breadth of this diverse country. Plus, the legendary Venice Simplon-Orient Express train comes through Venice regularly. We hear from our friends at Belmond that demand for the Italian properties is very high, so it seems that we aren’t the only ones pining for a return to Italy. Remember, it’s best to secure these highly sought-after accommodations sooner rather than later; after all, with flexible cancellation policies and reduced or no deposits, it’s easier to amend a reservation than to find last-minute availability! Trust us when we say that any of Belmond’s nine properties are worth a long stay, but let’s zoom in on four of them in particular: two in Tuscany and two in Sicily. These fabulous luxury hotels will give you a taste for every bit of Italy, from its rolling hills to its ancient cities to its sparkling seas—and all the magic in between. Town & Country in Tuscany Tuscany is perhaps Italy at its most quintessential, including contrasting treasures such as the art lover’s paradise that is Florence and the countryside hamlets of Tuscany, filled to the brim with food and wine delights. Luckily with Belmond, you don’t have to choose between the two. Spend a couple of nights in Florence at Villa San Michele, a former medieval monastery nestled in the Fiesole hills. Follow this up with a stay at Castello Di Casole, a 10thcentury aristocratic country estate in the wide-open countryside of Tuscany.
Not even your short transfer between the two will be wasted, as it’s the perfect time to stop in at Castello Di Ama, a contemporary art estate that seamlessly blends your interests in food, wine, architecture, art, and landscape into one unforgettable experience. Spoiled for Choice in Sicily Just off Italy’s southern coast—near the tip of the boot—you’ll find the island of Sicily and Belmond’s two incredible properties there: Grand Hotel Timeo in the heart of Taormina and enchanting Villa Sant’Andrea, a beach residence in Taormina Mare. Grand Hotel Timeo was the first hotel to be built in Taormina, and its views across the coast toward Mount Etna are awe-inspiring. Just like the celebrated guests before you, sip a cocktail and breathe in the full spectacle of Sicily, sampling sensational cuisine and luxuriating in manicured gardens while you’re at it. For something a little outside the thick of things, head to Villa Sant’Andrea for some seaside bliss. The Villa feels more like a home than a hotel but with all the old-world glamour you’d expect from a residence that’s been charming guests since the ‘50s. The sounds of Mediterranean waters will allow you to sink into a world of calm, enjoying strolls on the pebbled beach, poolside cocktails, and private
cruises on serene waters. A cable car as well as the hotel’s courtesy shuttle can whisk you into town at a moment’s notice, if you can peel yourself away from this secluded retreat. There’s a reason it’s considered among the most romantic hotels in Italy!
poe perks It’s no secret that we’re big Belmond fans, and we are proud to be a part of their exclusive Bellini Club, meaning we can bring enhanced amenities to our beloved clients. The first option is a swell special offer. Stay seven combined nights at any two (or more!) of Belmond’s Italian properties and enjoy 20% off the best available rate. Alternatively, Poe Travel clients who book at the regular rate will enjoy added value amenities such as welcome treats, fully flexible resort/hotel credits, complimentary upgrades, and more.

A Breath of Fresh Air in Edinburgh 100 Princes Street, a brand-new hotel in the Red Carnation Hotel Collection, is set to open in summer 2022, just in time for Edinburgh’s busiest season... Skip over to Scotland this summer to experience for yourself a new opening that is sure to change the face of the hotel scene in one of our favorite cities: Edinburgh. Named for its exclusive address, 100 Princes Street will bring the renowned quality of service of The Red Carnation Hotel Collection to Scotland’s capital city. Featuring thoughtful design and some of the best views to be had in the city, 100 Princes Street is sure to make a splash. Paying Homage to Scottish Explorers The hotel, along with its 30 rooms and suites, features inspired design that gives a nod to the great Scottish explorers of history, creating a true sense of place. Led by the same stellar design team behind the iconic Ashford Castle in Ireland (Toni Tollman, Philippe Bonino, and Brian Brennan), the hotel’s restoration has been carefully done, with the aim of retaining the original heart and soul of the building always at the forefront. Inspired by Alexander McQueen, the design team worked with local artisans to create bespoke pieces for the hotel to incorporate the spirit of Scotland into its very makeup, including custom-made tartan by Araminta Campbell (at whose workshop we can arrange a private tour for you!) and a central staircase featuring a handpainted mural by Croxford & Saunders. The design elements of the hotel combine to honor several Scottish explorers who broke ground around the world just as 100 Princes Street is breaking ground in Edinburgh. CALTON HILL, EDINBURGH EDINBURGH CASTLE
Whenever, Wherever! Red Carnation will be bringing their “whenever, wherever” approach to service to 100 Princes Street. Being a family-run hotel, top-notch service is very important at all Red Carnation Hotels, and 100 Princes Street will be no exception. “Anything, anytime,” we are told regarding the service standards at the new hotel. While the hotel will certainly look spectacular, the Tollman family—who own Red Carnation—assure us that it will be the people who will define 100 Princes Street and elevate it to new heights. The hotel will boast a 2:1 staff ratio, and Red Carnation have gone to great lengths to ensure that the best of the best local Edinburgh talent will be within its halls, bringing the Red Carnation art of hospitality to its guests from the word go.
Being a family-run hotel, top-notch service is very important at all Red Carnation Hotels, and 100 Princes Street will be no exception. “Anything, anytime,”
Do as the Scots Do Along with the hotel’s culturally inspired design and phenomenal service, guests will also be treated to famous signature dishes to give you the taste of Scotland, with menus carefully curated to reflect the season. It wouldn’t be a visit to Scotland without a tipple, and you won’t be short of choices. Standout features in the restaurant and bar areas will include a wine wall with over 200 fine wines, showcasing the range from the vineyard Bouchard Finlayson, which is one of Red Carnation’s sister companies also run by the Tollmans. A visit to Scotland also demands a wee dram or two, and 100 Princes Street will deliver on this request with gusto. An incredible collection of acclaimed Scottish whiskeys will adorn an entire wall of the hotel, and we’re willing to bet that—given a few days—you’ll be tempted to try a few. After choosing your beverage of choice, cozy up by the fire to take in unforgettable panoramic views of Edinburgh Castle.

from Edinburgh.. .
Get Back to the Big Smoke: Chatting with David Morgan-Hewitt of The Goring London has always been an appealing city to visit from the States. It’s an easy flight across the pond, and we Americans tend to find all things British irresistibly charming. We sat down with David Morgan-Hewitt, Managing Director of our most beloved London hotel, The Goring, to learn what’s new in London and how The Goring sets itself apart from all others. POE TRAVEL | Being family-owned is, of course, something that we can relate to. What do you think it brings to the table for clients traveling to London that The Goring is family-owned? DAVID MORGAN-HEWITT | When I first arrived at the hotel 31 years ago, George Goring told me, “Our name is above the door, so we will always try that bit harder for our guests.” There was never a truer word said in this building. We are the last great family-owned hotel in London, and that, more than anything else, is what makes us different to every other luxury hotel in this city. Just like our owners, The Goring family, we are impeccably English with a subtle streak of wit and wonder running throughout our DNA. We are proud to offer the very best of British for our visitors. What is it like getting to London from the States at the moment? Frankly, it is getting easier all the time. By the time this goes to print, we have no doubt that guidelines will have changed again, relaxing even further. The Goring is rightly known for its exceptional levels of service, so Poe Travel clients can rest assured that we will be up-to-date on all the changes to ensure that their journey to London is safe and simple. So far, that has included arranging tests in the hotel and providing safe accommodation and support for those required to isolate. However, it looks increasingly likely that these measures will soon be a thing of the past. We know The Goring is beloved around the world, but tell us where your guests typically travel in from? Our guests come primarily from the UK and the USA. We have always been a firm favorite with these two nationalities, probably because we offer that impeccably English experience they look for when visiting London. After all, as well as a flurry of liveried footmen, we even have our own private English country garden at the back of the hotel, which isn’t always easy to come by in London! Probably our most well-known UK guest in recent years was the Duchess of Cambridge, who famously stayed here the night before her wedding to Prince William. Over two bil-
lion people watched her leaving the front door of the hotel to start her short journey to Westminster Abbey. Our Michelin-starred Dining Room, which celebrates the very best of British ingredients, is frequented by locals and guests alike, as is our elegant Cocktail Lounge. In the summer, The Goring Garden is pure joy for sipping summer cocktails or champagne or lunching on delicious grilled Cornish seafood.
Our name is above the door, so we will always try that bit harder for our guests. — george goring What has been going on at The Goring during the past couple of years that we should know about? 2020 and 21 were filled with a mixture of openings and closings in London, but we were fortunate to retain nearly all of our amazing staff. We busied ourselves reviewing our award-winning Forbes Five-Star Service and improving it even further. Each time we closed our doors, we used our time wisely, refreshing our 69 suites and bedrooms. Undertaking maintenance can be tricky in a busy hotel, so I am delighted to say that as we enter 2022, The Goring has never looked better. Finally, what’s on in London this year that we should all be excited about? This year is all about HM The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, and as the only hotel in the world to hold a Royal Warrant by The Queen, this occasion will be very important here at The Goring. Throughout the summer, we shall be celebrating with a look back over Her Majesty’s 70-year reign, and we will be building gorgeous programs for guests and their families. Details will be announced soon!

All Things Auberge in Mexico
A Fresh Face in Riviera Maya
Auberge’s brand-new Etereo is the hottest new opening in Mexico’s Riviera Maya, bringing a wonderfully small and luxurious new option to one of the most perfect relaxation destinations. The Riviera Maya, on Mexico’s northeastern Yucatán Peninsula, has long been full of luxury resorts. While we have a few favorites here, we are overjoyed to announce that Auberge has just opened the 75-room Etereo in the new Kanai Development north of Mayakoba. This stunning hotel’s name comes from the Spanish word for “ethereal,” and trust us, it’s a fitting moniker. The property literally looks like it floats on the dwarf mangroves. Auberge is renowned for its intimate, one-of-a-kind resorts focusing on local, authentic experiences, and Etereo fits this admirable ethos like a glove. All of the rooms here are ocean-facing, with many featuring private plunge pools. The resort has separate family and adults-only pools, making it perfect whether you’re traveling with little ones or looking for a romantic getaway. Throughout the property, you’ll find curated touches to reflect the region: minibars stocked with local tequilas that can’t be purchased in the States, décor sourced from local artists, and Mexicanand Mayan-influenced dishes in two of the three restaurants (the third offers Japanese fare!). Wellness is also a huge focus at Etereo. Their Sana Spa reflects the look of the local cenotes and is a healing space to indulge in not only traditional spa treatments, but also transformative experiences inspired by Mayan history and practices. They even have their own onsite shaman!
Chillin’ at Chileno Bay On Cabo’s most desirable beach, you’ll find Chileno Bay, the contemporary escape of your family’s dreams... Why is Chileno Bay’s beach the most desirable in all of Los Cabos? Well, that’s an easy one. It’s swimmable! Not many beaches in Cabo are made for swimming, but at Chileno Bay, you’ll have the opportunity to relax poolside AND take a dip in the tranquil waters of this protected cove— and they have plenty of water activities to keep you busy too! Journeys out to sea will reveal a hidden underwater world of tropical fish and sea turtles that will delight you; in fact, Jacques Cousteau coined the Sea of Cortez “the aquarium of the world” for this reason. This hotel was created with a distinct vision: a contemporary take on the classic Baja escape. The airy, open aesthetic blurs the line between indoor and outdoor, with guest rooms featuring private terraces. The hotel itself is very social. Its three-tiered pool is separated into family and adults-only sections, and they have a robust “teen and tween” program along with a kids’ club to entertain those of all ages. Plus, their spa has all the latest and trendiest offerings that you’re likely to find in LA, bringing the treatments of the stars to you in Cabo. We recommend hopping on the hotel’s complimentary nightly shuttle to its sister property, Esperanza, for dinner one night.
Pure Relaxation at Esperanza Also in Cabo San Lucas, Auberge’s Esperanza provides options for families, couples, and groups of friends looking for a blissfully peaceful retreat. Where Chileno Bay is open and social, Esperanza is physically separated. When you approach the resort, the left side is adultsonly, featuring casitas and suites arranged in a semi-circle over two levels enjoying stunning ocean views. The design blends seamlessly into the natural surroundings, creating a serene atmosphere with its two beautiful pools overlooking the ocean. Listen to the waves crashing as you sit on your patio taking in phenomenal views. On the other side of the resort, families will love their stay in the residences, which range from two to four bedrooms. You’ll never run out of places to spend your time with four restaurants, five swimming pools, and beaucoups of child-friendly activities. Guests on the adults-only side are welcome to venture over to the family side, while children can enjoy the restaurants and family friendly pools throughout. We think this property works particularly well for girls’ trips. Start the day with a sunrise meditation or yoga class, sweat it out at a morning boot camp on the beach, have lunch overlooking the ocean, enjoy a spirited game of pickleball, and then spend the afternoon by the pool before dinner together at the Italianinspired restaurant. There’s also plenty of time for relaxing in a hammock reading a book, sipping rosé, and all the other bits of vacation that just make our hearts sing.
SPRING SUMMER 22 —
Live the Private Island Life at Islas Secas Whisk your multi-generational family or group off for a private island adventure off the coast of Panama at Islas Secas, where there’s plenty of time for relaxation mixed in with the long list of included activities... After your international flight to Panama City, hop on a Twin Otter plane belonging to Islas Secas, a small resort off the coast in the Gulf of Chiriquí, an archipelago made of 14 private islands. Islas Secas sits on the main island and is comprised of seven casitas with a total of 12 bedrooms, housing up to 24 guests. While the casitas can be rented on a room-by-room basis like any resort, we think it makes the perfect location for a buyout to house a large family or a group of friends or colleagues. Along with the stunning setting and breathtaking views, you’ll be treated to top-notch dining, plenty of fun in the water, and unforgettable hikes. Best of all, the resort’s intense focus on sustainability will satisfy even the most eco-conscious traveler. All-Inclusive Luxury When you arrive at Islas Secas and see all that you will call home for the duration of your stay on this remote island, you won’t be able to believe that the experience is allinclusive, from the incredible dining options right up to the unbelievable list of activities. From the moment you touch down, don’t worry about a thing. With 75 dedicated staff members, you’ll be well looked after from start to finish, never having to reach for your pocketbook as you go. Sustainability for Days Islas Secas is home to the largest coral reefs off Panama’s Pacific coast, beautiful beaches, and two vast protected marine parks, and its waters are home to exceptional sea life. As such, protecting this vital area is a top focus at Islas Secas. Become One with Nature You won’t be able to resist the urge to reconnect with nature with the pristine setting on show at Islas Secas. Hike along groomed trails to a 300-year-old cedar tree before emerging to enjoy a cool breeze and views of Isla Pargo and the driftwood that collects on the shore. Visit one of the world’s largest protected marine areas to see migratory humpback whales, turtles, and more. Take a boat to Isla Cocos for some birding to see the largest Frigate bird colony in the area on a nature walk. After of a day of activities, it’s important to make time for relaxation, and there’s no place better than at the resort’s spa. Yoga classes can be arranged in peaceful spots around the resort so you can get your Zen on. In the evenings, gaze at starry skies unpolluted by city lights in this remote paradise.
Casita Sombras plunge pool
ISLAS SECAS SUSTAINABILITY STATS • 100% of the resort’s energy is powered by solar panels • 100% of water use is captured/reclaimed through a filtration system to provide surface irrigation and reduce impact on groundwater supply • 100% of food scraps are composted for fertilizer • The resort is zero-waste, and guest facilities were constructed using sustainable wood
Come on In, the Water’s Great! The list of water activities at Islas Secas is not a short one, and unlike many “all-inclusive” resorts that charge you for premium activities, that’s never the case here. Partake in as many activities as you’d like as many times as you like. It is incredibly rare for unlimited scuba diving to be included, for example, but at Islas Secas, that’s just the reality. Explore any of the 14 islands that make up Islas Secas, the bays, caves, and beaches all overflowing with beautiful flora and fauna. Observe tropical fish, rays, and eels on a snorkeling trip, or take a scuba excursion to look even deeper. (Lessons are available for those who are not yet certified.) Paddleboard, kayak, surf, bodyboard, Seabob, or eFoil your way into these stunning waters. Take a private beach excursion with all your water gear to enjoy a picnic and water activities along the way. Try your hand at fishing, or even go whale watching, depending on the season! The possibilities are endless as your days burst with the color of private island life.
