(4-15 August 2013)
Zimbabwe National Debate Championship has proudly turned five. The build up from the 2009 has seen many successes and challenges that together have contributed to the quality of debate in Zimbabwe today. The years passed have seen Zimbabwe Debate Network growing from convening four institutions to 21 in 2012, successfully forwarding a team to the Worlds Universities Debate Championship in Berlin, 2012/13, successfully convening the Pan African Universities Debate Championship 2010, getting a green light from the Zimbabwean Government through the Min-
istry of Higher and Tertiary Education to run debate in all institution of higher learning in Zimbabwe. Advancing from 2012, participating institutions have successfully convened Zonal debate championships with two zones managing to convene the Zonals successfully. This was followed by a successful tournament that was hosted by Mutare Teachers College. The tourney had a total of 72 teams and an adjudication team that comprised of renowned adjudicators. The Champions were a team from Bulawayo Polytechnic which then won the ticket to represent
Zimbabwe at the Worlds Universities Debate Championship in Berlin. 2013 saw an improvement with Bulawayo, Mutare and Harare convening successful Zonals that led to the selection of the teams that represent the institutions at this ZNDC. This then led to the success of the fifth edition which was hosted by Masvingo Teachers College. The tournament showcased top drawer debates with world class trainers and adjudicators. The winning team (a team from Mutare Teachers College) got the right to represent Zimbabwe Debate Union (ZDU) in Chennai, India for the 2013/14 edition of the Worlds Universities Debate Cham-
pionship (WUDC) while a team from Belvedere Technical Teachers College which broke first after the preliminary rounds will represent ZDU at the Worlds Universities Peace Invitational Debate Championship in Malaysia.
