THE VERDICT ‘Punchy and precise, the Spy delivers pedigree performance, willing to fulfil a number of different roles and thriving when used by the adventurous and pro-active.’ UK MAGAZINE

Andrea Cucchi ITA-1

It’s winter here in Europe, but we don’t give up Windsurfing. It used to be thought as a summer water sport, but thanks to Technology, with proper apparels, it’s now possible to unconnect the word summer from sport. I’ve seen one girl who began windsurfing in June, and with 2°C she is on the water everyday windsurfing with all of us. Fully planing, falling and waterstarting! Break the fear from being cold, ask advice to those who are on the water the whole Year round. Find out that the coldest moment is only the idea to go. For the rest keep enjoying what we love the most 365days a year!

GET READY TO ..

SLASH

.!

The development of the Slash freestyle: a result of the continuous evolution from the PWA square! Not because the freestylers are young and crazy, the development must be young and crazy! It’s wild! Wild in a sense of being crazy professional. The freestyle discipline is getting very radical. The same PWA judges have decided to have heats with max 2 competitors on the water, and not 4 anymore: they are nowadays not able to judge more than one person at the time. The speed, the perfection and the different variants on each new move, it’s so technical and important, that they need to stay focus and watch careful, in order not to miss a detail which would cause them a lot of trouble with one of the competitors. Winning a heat, it’s getting close to 0,01 points sometimes, and each detail comes crucial. The same detail the freestyle sail must go through the development. There is the same amount of detail and millimetric work on a freestyle sail as all other sails, but we could compare to the studying of the project as complicated as a full cambered race sail.

YENTEL CAERS BEL 16

As an example, our testers turn up with videos and photos to show how the sail deforms, or moves, or showing how the profile reacts during the different moves. Explaining what would need to be changed, or be different in those exact moments. The rig sails, the show you the difference between one proto and the other. They are almost fussier than a slalom rider. We love it! The sail must follow their needs in that exact moment, to make them feel secure to be able to execute the move with the right timing and pressures. We started the new project from the slash 3 versions ago. For zero18 each size has been taken singularly as each size is being used in very different conditions and the needs are very different. If you are looking for explosive power in light wind and big sails size, you are also looking for controllable power instead, in strong wind and smaller sizes. There was not one aspect that remained unchanged in each size. Small changes, important changes, to improve the balance of the features needed in freestyle: changes to keep developing towards the needs of a discipline, which never stops its evolution. New size in the range is the 3.6! There is no more space to freestyle on a small wave sail!

This month we are introducing to you our Australian distributor. Jurgen is a very dedicated distributor and enthusiast of the brand. He loves the outdoor windsurfing lifestyle which he shares with his family, and to spread the Black Sails in Australia.

JURGEN HEIKAMP Dear Jurgen, when you took Point-7 in your hands, only few black sails in Australia were present. It was still the early days of the brand. The brand being from Europe is far from Australia, so your job is to make it known. How are the people seeing point-7 in the country? There is an active race / slalom en GPS crowd here and they look at Point-7 as an innovative and fast brand! If I’m in Australia and want a Point-7, what’s the quickest way? Call Jurgen at 0429260514! Lots of Europeans come to Australia for wave sailing. Do the Australian windsurfers only wave sail or do other disciplines? Australia is huge and has an enormous variety of local spots! You can always sail somewhere in pristine conditions!

Which locations are most known in Australia for windsurfing? Western Australia has famous spots like Margaret River, Coronation and Gnaraloo. Victoria is the home of Sandy Point – the worlds fastest natural speed strip. We has it all here đ&#x;™‚ Which sail do you enjoy most from the Point-7 range? I like the AC-ONE for it’s bottom end and speed. When I wavesail I use the Salt Pro. Keep up the good work Team Point-7 and I am sure more Aussies will eventually GO BLACK!

THE UPDATE As we are already in the new 2018 season and there are developments on the team front at Point-7, we wanted to keep everyone up to date with what is happening for this year regarding out slalom team. The mission at Point-7 has always been to work with key windsurfing athletes from around the globe who share our passion, develop talent at the youth level and design the best equipment to give our team riders the best tools available to ply their skills on the Pro Tour. The way our BLACK TEAM works as a whole determines its success. You may have the greatest bunch of individual talents in the world, but if they don’t bring the right spirit to the team, their effort won’t be worth what we are looking for. To win the game, you don’t have to be the most athletic or talented. To win, you must have passion for the sport, determination and complete faith in yourself and your team. We had realised this with Josh Angulo. His message to us was ‘Thanks for bringing back the passion’ in 2012. This massage to us was very clear. Josh needed a team and support to have a real result in slalom. We brought him to top 5 in slalom with our AC-ONE. His best slalom overall result in the PWA. We were rigging and tuning his sails, carrying the gear in and out of the water, caddying him on the water, even washing his sail window to make sure he had perfect visibility in the jibes. We were there as a whole team to make sure he felt confident and supported. It was pure fact that a team behind a pro windsurfer was going to make a difference

“Our riders work as a team, train as a team and enjoy success as a team. Our unique approach to training and preparation gives our riders the best possible chance out on the water when they compete. Our task is to give the right support at the right moment. It’s an individual sport, where the ego often comes into play. A sport where you are not only fighting with the other competitors, but with nature too and lots of experience is needed. You need to be knowing your opponents, think fast and feel at home in big variety of conditions. Who came in our Point-7 Black Team proving dedication and wanting to act as a

Alberto Menegatti was the first hero of the new generation from the Point-7 Black Team. He took our AC-One and with the team concept, went from 15th to 2nd in one year. He left everybody speechless. It was the first time that a new name had made a podium after many years, and challenged the big names of the PWA. Especially someone so young From there we took the initial concept and philosophy we always had. Let’s develop young talents and bring them up with our AC-One to success. The easy solution would be to pay a champion the money he needs to prove, that with his ability, the product works, as most brands do. But this is not where our hearts lie. We believe that our time, energy and passion we put into our products can be proven on several dimensions. Its simply not exciting for us to move along traditional paths. We invested our resources in creating the first and unique winter training in Tenerife where the riders for the first time had the chance to train together and push each other. We have now moved the training to Lanzarote to offer even more training services to push one step ahead the concept. Our team manager travels to all the PWA tour events to support the team, race himself to understand the requirements of the team, keeping them united and pushing them to help and motivate each other. As you might have read in the yellow section on top, after Alberto, it was time for Pascal Toselli from France. After finishing his university came on board and after few years obtained an amazing top 5 result: his best career result till now a swell! Last year we interrupted something which was going on for years. Something that only few brands can say to have. We brought our racing AC-One to be the PWA world champion thanks to another young talent, Matteo Iachino. Point-7 is now able to put the PWA Slalom Sail Constructor World Title in its hall of fame.

After bringing up all these young talents to their best results, who will be next? Gabriel Browne BRA: 23yrs old. Tired of being the brother of the Wave World Champion Marcillo, Gabriel will he put 100% energy to get to the top rankings in the PWA slalom? He now moved to Maui to focus on his professional windsurfing career. Gabriel had shown already the talent when he started his first year on tour at the age of 16. Now being 23 and finishing his studies, he is more than ready to make a strong come back. This year he had his first adjustment year in the PWA, with some top 10 results, so we are ready to back him up with all his needs. Bruno Martini ITA: Same age from Gabriel, Bruno is coming from a young skiing academy career. His father being a personal trainer thought him the importance of being fit and healthy. His hyper speed as not match yet his potential in the rankings, but we are excited to get him the final ingredients missing. Bruno lives on Lake Garda where just next to the Point-7 summer development centre. Often busy testing products with the team. Basile Jacquin FRA: 19years old and already top 10 results. Youth PWA and IFCA World Champion. This isthe truth from this young talent. In some of the events he was finishing finals in the top 5. Yet a body to develop to man power, experience to be battled on the race course, but his talent has already got the other PWA riders worried. Basile born and raised in New Caledonia, has moved to South France to study at university, but his focus will be windsurfing. Francesco Scagliola ITA: ‘Ciccio’ this is how all the veterans call him at the PWA World Tour. If you are 16, close to 190 tall, but still 20kg too light and 30 years of career in front of you, how would you feel when you are actually getting the oldies worried in some heats? EXCITED! Fulya Unlu our main young rider for the women category. And of course Lena Erdil who has shown consistent podium and champion potential.

‘I remember when I came on the PWA tour the first years. It was practically an impossible mission to be able to be at the level of the top pros. It took years before understanding how it all worked. It was easy to be discouraged and quit. I always thought how unfair that nothing was existing for windsurfing to grow up the kid’s level. The federations were only about the Olympic class. Just like now. Nothing was there to help the youngsters for the slalom. There was no coaching, there was no one to ask. When we created the Point7 Black Team, we did not want to hire the best rider to use the skills of the rider to prove the sails, we were all about growing the product with the talented riders who deserved the support by proving team work and effort. Giving them all the shortcuts and tools needed to make it up there in the shortest time possible. We took Matteo Iachino to the top positions possible twice. He is now ready to do it alone, and it’s now time for us to move on to the next challenge. It takes energy and time that not all the brands are willing to invest, but for us it’s what we thrive on, and its what excites us, but most of all, its what keeps us on our toes and keeps us alive in the eyes of our followers who want to be surprised all of the time by our will to stand out!’ Andrea Cucchi, Team Manager

To complete the team Andrea Cucchi himself and Kurosh Kiani, the Point-7 media manager, will both be competing on the PWA tour and prove themselves along with the rest of the team on top of guiding them to success.

In our series of great locations around the world, where you also can ride our gear, we´ve been in touch with Tobi from Rhodes who runs the Surf and Kite Theologos center in some rather beautiful surroundings on this Greek island already known to many as a prime windsurfing location. We´ve summed up the details about this great location and we caught up with Tobi to get a bit more insights into this center:

YOUR NEXT

destination Name of the Centre: Surf and Kite Theologos Country: Greece Spot: Rhodes, Theologos Type: Kite and Windsurfing spot Standard wind condition: steady, side-onshore from s/w, 4-5 bft. Opening months: April 1st until Oct 31st Opening hours: 9:30am until 7pm every day Closest airport: RHO Type of accommodation available: Next season we will start our own accommodation, right now we cooperate with hotels, apartments at the spot Website: www.surfandkitetheologos.com FB: / Instagram : Other contacts: Our FB and Instagram profile is “surfandkitetheologos or contact us on our website

Tell us about yourself. How did you end up being owner of the windsurfing centre. You are German, but the windsurfing centre is in Greece? I am Tobi, 28 years of age and living on Rhodes for the last 7 years. I started windsurfing at the age of 8. At that time l already fell in love with watersports. In 2011 I came to Rhodes only for the summer as a windsurfing- and kitesurfing instructor. Well, that was my intention. But then in the middle of the greek crisis my old partner sold the small windsurfing station to me. That was in 2012. This is when it all started. Since that day we are growing steadily. We built a huge kitesurfing station, a jet ski station, a beach apparel shop and are working together with Billy’s Place and apartments. Rhodes is one of the biggest Greek islands. It combines the typical Greek lifestyle with the perfect blue sea, a lot of wind, perfect weather and many friendly people. This is what I love. It is possible to enjoy life and make business at the same time. Why would a windsurfing client find your spot unique? Our spot is located in Theologos which is only 5km south of the Airport of Rhodes. So you will have just a short transfer. Our windsurf station is based directly at the beach of the TUI Family Hotel Alex Beach. The windsurf center has VDWS certified staff, got more than 70 POINT-7 sails and 50 Patrik boards. Neoprene, harnesses or additional equipment is available in sufficient amount and included in the rental price. Besides, we have training equipment for the curious of any age. Every season our station will be renewed with the newest material. Sweet water showers, toilets, chairs, a chill-out area, music, the Beach Bar as well as sun beds and shadow places of the hotel belong, of course, to our comfort. At the beach the Meltimi wind gives you a lot of power in your sails. The wind gets compressed between the island and the Turkish mainland and due to the local thermal further strengthened. In the mornings the wind blows a little bit lighter and is therefore perfect for beginner surfers, whereas during midday the advanced riders get their money’s worth. In midsummer the wind blows sideonshore from southwest, creating a small wave at the shore and a swell further out.

How would a windsurfing client spend a typical day for a windsurfing at your spot. From when he wakes up till he goes to sleep. (Include activities such as other sports, meals, night life, relaxing time..) You will start the day with a nice breakfast at Billy’s Place for example or at your hotel/apartement. From any accommodation around it is just walking distance to the windsurf station. Most days you will be able to surf already before midday with some light wind and continue surfing during the day with smaller sails when the wind picks up. Normally around 2-2:30pm. And if you like to take a break then just sit down, have a look at our kitesurfing station, rent a car to discover the island or just relax at our chillout area and the beach bar of the hotel. Our team will do everything to make your stay as pleasant and fun as possible by regularly offering beach BBQ’s, Greek food evenings in the taverns of Theologos, free taster courses and trips to Rhodes nightlife.

How many days of holidays would be perfect to enjoy the area and the best time of the year? The longer the better, depending on your holiday period. Beginning of June until end of September you will enjoy a perfect time on the water. It is more than likely to have 6 out of 10 days with very good wind. In the pre and off-season (May and October) the spot offers you another highlight: The Tramontana wind from Turkey can create waves at the sandbank of 2 meters and the wind blows at 8 bft. mostly onshore rather than sideshore. Those conditions can be tough and are not recommended for beginners anymore. Thanks Tobi. It was great to get a closer look into this great spot

How Much time does a pro windsurfer spend on his social media ??

Back in the days Athletes were depending completely on printed media. It was a rush to get photos on slides, having to ask to an equipped photographer to run to the beach if he had the time to photoshoot the particular day, move or whatever thought to be interesting for the magazines. This still exist and it’s even harder to create content to impress, but on the other hand, with all the new technology for filming, photo shooting, action cams, digital equipment and drones a lot of it can be done by yourself. And the social media and.

spend on his social media

web communication has made it easier for the athletes to share their lifestyle, their story and ultimately promote their sponsors. Sponsors are looking at the social media numbers of each athlete on top of the printed media and their results. On this subject, we have asked our Point-7 Black Team, how much time and focus they give to their social media, more precisely to their Facebook and Instagram

PWA Top Women Slalom (favourite sail: AC-ONE REV II) How do you build up your Social media page? Try to post every day, tagging and hashtags. If possible, I try to get other influential people to post about me and tag me. Which one you prefer between Twitter, FB, Instagram? Instagram How do you find them different? I don’t use twitter much I find it is more a platform for discussion and instant feedback. which I don’t consider so useful for what I try to achieve most the time. Facebook and Instagram are pretty similar. I find the older generation in particular still use Facebook more than Instagram. Do you post the same things on all socials? Yes In which one you are more successful? Instagram

Stories, Photos or Videos. Where do you get the most likes? Why do you think so? Photos you don’t really get likes on stories. But I get a lot of views‌! Interesting to see the people that regularly watch your stories but never like your photos đ&#x;™‚ I think not everyone is aware of the fact that people can see who watched their stories. Videos are great but for the Instagram feed now I try and only post really good photos or videos to keep my account up to a high standard How long do you spend yourself looking up at things on the social media? Too much lately! That is for sure! It really annoys me how important it has become, but I now see it as an important part of my job, so I try to see what other people post and what gets more feedback or likes

What do you follow? friends, Windsurfing, surfing, fitness Do you spend the same time trying to get coverage on printed magazines and web magazines? Probably more or less although more on print then web as I get incentives for print and not for web‌ More excited to be on a Magazine cover or to get over 50,000likes on a video? I think so.

PWA Top Wave sailor (favourite sail: SALT PRO) How do you build up your Social media page? Trying to post interesting stuff to my followers and maybe show them a bit thing they don’t see about my personal life. Which one you prefer between Twitter, FB, Instagram? I actually Prefer Instagram and Fb, more Instagram actually but tweeter is more for news and information not so much for pictures How do you find them different? I think Instagram is like a magazine of whatever you want it to be (depending on who you follow) and people now has a big addiction of spending lots of time on Instagram! Do you post the same things on all socials? Most of the stuff yes! but not all! In which one you are more successful? On Instagram lately, but actually Facebook depending what kind of stuff I post I get a lot of views and likes! Stories, Photos or Videos. Where do you get the most likes? Why do you think so? Photos of course! I just try to focus on posting stuff I know people is going to like! and I really make sure what I am posting! How long do you spend yourself looking up at things on the social media? Depends on how my day is! What do you follow? some of my friends, Hot chicks, news about Venezuela and some things I’m interested in!

Do you spend the same time trying to get coverage on printed magazines and web magazines? yes, sometimes yes, but magazines aren’t what they used to be, plus if you don’t have the rights from the photographers they don’t let you post the pics on the mags More excited to be on a Magazine cover or to get over 50,000likes on a video? I’m excited to get both Actually they are both nice to get but a magazine Cover is always a nice privilege! Thanks for the remind.

Yentel Caers BEL 16

Which one you prefer between Twitter, FB, Instagram? For my opinion Instagram, but still like to use the other ones as well How do you find them different? Instagram is more user-friendly, and I like that you can just follow who you want, and everyone can follow you. Also, the stories are funny. Do you post the same things on all socials? Mostly yes, but sometimes I try to switch up a bit. Are when I release a new video. In which one you are more successful? For me Instagram Stories, Photos or Videos. Where do you get the most likes? Why do you think so? It’s really depending what you post, most of the time I get the most of pictures, but when you post a video with a new move it’s can go up a lot! How long do you spend yourself looking up at things on the social media? Really depending on the day, when it’s wind I have no time, but still I will quickly check and answer to question of people. What do you follow? I meanly follow windsurfers, but also good friends and other action sports athletes, like surf,skate,bmx….. Do you spend the same time trying to get coverage on printed magazines and web magazines? I will have every year some magazine coverage, but I think I spend less time on it now because the big surfmag from Belgium/Holland is not existing since last year. More excited to be on a Magazine cover or to get over 50,000likes on a video? Once I had the cover shot and I was pretty stoked about that, but still getting 50,000likes means that way more people so it then the cover. I will let you know when my video’s will get that much likes.

Winter windsurfing in Malcesine

Black Team: Basile Jaquin FRA 498 in NC

The mast is considered to be the back bone of the sail. How well do you try to keep your own back bone? As healthy as possible. Therefore, it’s the same care which is needed for the mast for your sail. A windsurfing mast is not a pole. It’s one piece of technology with important materials and precise manufacturing procedures. When you buy a first-class mast, whether it’s a 60 or 100%, it needs to be treated as a technical tool, and not as a toy. Therefore, it’s being sold in a nice compact padded single bag. This is where it should be always stored when not in use. It protects the mast during transport, which is one of the main causes, which could damage your mast. Insert the mast in the bag, only when it’s dry from rinsing.

HOW TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR

MASTS

Mast break from two main causes: • •

The first being a defective product due to imperfection in the manufacturing or material. A highlevel carbon mast is a handcrafted, almost as a custom product. The second being from improper use.

f the mast breaks from being defective, due to point one, it will break in less than five times on the water, and often just by rigging the sail the first time. If this does not happen, then the breakage is normally caused by improper use, otherwise it would have been broken before.

39

This improper use maybe from not inserting the cams correctly. It’s always good to check if the cams are sitting straight on the mast before use. A double check is not taking long. Tightening too much the boom head: There is no need to apply to much power on the boom head to keep it in the right position. If you have to exaggerate with the tension, than something is not developed properly on the boom head, and its better to start wondering on the boom head functionality. When this has too much tension, if you catapult, the overtighten front head stresses too much the mast in that area, and it could bring the breakage in the boom area. Catapults are one of the main causes, as well as dropping the mast on the ground. The mast might not break on the time of the accident, but maybe while rigging the next time. If the carbon gets damaged on the side, the time you rig the mast, where the damaged part goes into compression, the mast could collapse. You might think that it broke from rigging, but it could have been caused from an earlier session accident. Too many hours of sun in really hot days with no wind, is not the healthies for your mast. The mast if made with good carbon and resins, it will hold, but the mast does wear with time. The stress given to it for years will bring a wear, and a loss of performance. Just like any other product. You might have the mast for over 5 years, and still rig good, but of course the performance of the reflex, could have tired out with over hours and hours of work. So, keeping it out of the sun, de-rigged or at least kept a straight as possible when not in use, it’s all health for keeping longer the performance of the product. Shorebreakes, sand banks. If the top part of the mast breaks in the area from the ferrule, it is often from not inserting the base properly to the top.

If the top breaks at the tip, it is probably from the top getting stuck into reefs or sand banks, even in smaller waves. Actually, it’s sometimes easier that it breaks in smaller waves, especially if the water is shallow, than in bigger waves.

Always clean properly the ferrule from dirt or sand. Rinse before forcing to be inserted. Don’t think ok it took power to insert the top and bottom, and it worked. The dirt trap in, while sailing, will send off more of the material of the mast, and create even more dirt, and the mast could get stuck. If you feel there is dirt in between, don’t just rinse the ferrule, but the entire inside of the top as well. The dirt could be blown in from the wind, and when sailing it could come down between the parts and get your top stuck to the ferrule. Sometimes you will not see the dirt which covers the ferrule due to thin earth particles that are not visible. Dirt is the only reason why masts get stuck, so just take care that all is clean. The sail, can be left rigged for more days, if you are too lazy to de-rig, but the mast will bend if left lots of days with tension. This bending is normal, and most of the time is not the mast bending, but the ferrule. The mast ferrule will slowly with time go back straight and will not break. For long life of the mast, it is recommended to de-rig the sail when not in use. Alternatively, to take out completely the downhaul so that the mast stays in the sail at a perfect straight position. Otherwise in long term, the mast will lose its reflex in a faster period of time, than in the normal use. If you use the dedicated mast for the advised sail, and not ‘compatible masts’, the rig will have less stress, and the performance of all it’s components will last longer.
