Point-7 Mast Lines

Most of the masts might look the same, but often produced by different manufactures with different machinery, materials, and technology. By having the mast production based in Italy where Point-7 is situated, it’s possible to have a continuous development into new products and ensure that the quality of all finished products that leaves the factory is second to none. The mast is a very important accessory for our rig. It’s the back bone of your windsurfing sail. It’s where the development starts. Better a 60% mast from the same brand of the sail with the right curves, then a no name 100% mast with no curves or reference on the mast! Our Point-7 masts are black, aggressive, light, precise and beautiful

YOUNG TALENTS!!

LET’S MEET ANCOR SOSIA ASENSIO We have seen him on his S!CK and we were amazed on his talent. It’s Ancor! 10years old and living the windsurfing lifestyle we all dream of! His parents are running the Windsurfing Centre in Matas Blanca in Fuerteventura, and he is not wasting time in something else. He is there each moment of the day.

How long have you been windsurfing and since when have you started blasting fully hooked on, and in the straps? I learned to sail in December of 2016 and I learned to plane in February of 2017 on the beach of Matas Bay. Does all your family windsurf? Who was your teacher? Everyone in my family windsurfs aside from my sister. I was thought to windsurf by three people, my Mum, Troy and Davide. Troy is the best windsurf instructor in the world!!

Tell us a typical day of Ancor during the week and on the weekend. During the week I wake up and go to school, after school I study for one hour and then I go to the beach between two and six thirty, and then between eight and ten o´clock I train Karate Perfect! You like as well other sports ? I have been training Karate since I was 5 years old and I have been ranked second two years in a row and after that first two years in a row. We have seen you blasting, and doing freestyle moves. If you had to choose to freestyle, wave sailing or slalom? I like freestyle and wave sailing but on my beach I practise freestyle.

What size of S!ck are you using in the photos? Which other sail do you use? Which size board? In the photos I use the 3.1, 3.8 and my 2.4. My boards are the taboo twister 80 litres and my magma wave board with 40 litres. Did you ever take part at competitions? How did it go? I competed in 2017 at the world speed championships in Fuerteventura-at Matas bay. Despite being the youngest competitor I ranked in the top ten What´s cool about you family windsurfing centre? The flat water, the constant wind and the good feeling with the clients. Will you take part at Yentel Freestyle stage this July at your windsurfing centre? Yes sure!! He will show me new moves :)

It’s the biggest windsurfing race of the year from many years. Over 1200 people in this edition and it keeps growing. Point-7 has been always successful at this event. In 2010, Pascal Toselli was finishing second, Andrea Cucchi was also second in 2013, first in 2014 and Lena Erdil second in the girls in 2015. After the no wind year from last year, 2018 was another windy year with 2 days of winds over 30 knots, and 2 amazing days to relax, share time with friends, see all the innovation from the different windsurfing

Andrea Cucchi after being consistent in his results on his AC-One 5.6 and 6.2, managed to finish 4th overall and first from his category, 40-49. Cecile Decourt on the Point-7 Salt managed to finish 1st from the women!

Andrea Cucchi’ It’s a pity that lots of international events were clashing in the same week, but taking part at the Defi is always a great experience even after I have taken part at this event 5 times! The 4 days were nonstop. 2 days of strong wind. Sunday, we had just below 10°C in the first race, and racing in short arm wetsuit all those km was already a challenge. It makes you feel good when you can push over your limits to try to catch that extra spot in the race. During the 4 days we also helped all our Point-7 friends tune their sails for the race, and it was a pleasure to visit We Ride surf shop in Leucate where we held a presentation with the clients of the shop. I’m happy for my 4th considering how the whole event was, and super happy for Cecile who won the women ranking, and I’m now on the road again, off to Sri Lanka to check the new 2019 production.’

RICARDO CAMPELLO V 111

What is your dream destination in the world? Ricardo presents his, and it may just as well be the dream destination for many other people in the world. Read Ricardo´s story of his recent trip to Los Roques in Venezuela, a virtually untouched paradise archipelago in the Caribbean. Words by Ricardo Campello. Pics by “Fukajaz”

LOS ROQUES, RICARDO´S DREAM PLACE

I have been coming to Los Roques since I was 13 years Old, I have Scored amazing conditions for a long time but never really did an article about my trips over here. I think now it’s time for me to show you around my dream place in details. So, there are only 2 ways for you to come to Los R0ques, either on a private boat or on a small Plane. But I mean real small, almost impossible to bring your windsurfing equipment. My journey on this trip began on carnival holidays over here, normally some cool people come, and good friends and I was just in South Africa before this trip. A few days before I asked some friends to come with me on my boat and of course “Fuka”, my friend who´s been filming and taking pictures of my recent trips was in. As you might have heard from my social media on my way from Cape Town to London I lost my passport and of course my trip to Los Roques got delayed by 2 days as I had to get a new Emergency passport in London to fly back home. My boat was at Puerto La Cruz city, 150 miles from Los Roques. Normally from where I live (Isla Margarita is a 200 nautical miles ride) but the boat was there doing some detailing and work. One of the friends I invited is a Pro Surfer: Francisco “Lolo” Bellorin. He has been National Champion and Latin American surfing champion multiple times. Last year he was 4th place at the Surf Worlds and every time I come I try to invite him. Normally the ride is rough and could be up to 9 hours of sailing. My boat is a power boat powered by triple Yamahas 300 Hp 34 foot Wellcraft and it’s a pretty comfortable boat. We can sleep up to 6 people inside and basically have our “floating Home “. Before you ask yourself 900 Hp? How much money is that on fuel? Well luckily enough for me, the Fuel in Venezuela is cheaper then water, seriously! I fill in 1455 Litres of gasoline for less than …. wait? It’s less than one cent, so to explain it easier, with 1$ I can fill my tank about 80 times. Yes, you got it right, its ridiculously cheap, and that is why I can have so much power on my boat, otherwise it simply wouldn’t be possible. For a few days we were lucky enough that this time the ocean was on our side, it wasn’t fully glassy, but it took us 5 hours and half to get there, honestly it was one of the fastest trips I’ve ever done to Los Roques. We were cruising from 25 to 30 knots which is a fast cruising speed.

There wasn’t any real good forecast waves or at least waves to get some su but just to be around here is a dream. has all kinds of tones of blues. With ove or keys and Sandbars, the variety o places to visit is infinite. The main Island Roque is where most of the 1300 peop you can find the Air Strip, all the “Posa and of course where the life is. It is a town where pretty much everybody other and where all the locals are cool. motor vehicles on the main islands, you truck or two for services like trash, wat the streets are beach sand so when I’m walking barefoot all the time. There are lots of kids around and my lo windsurfer Oscar Cisneros has bee amazing job teaching the local kids to the little lagoon behind the shop where He´s one of the nicest persons I know positive and always helpful to e surprised me showing me the kids sail are over 30 kids learning to windsurf ov see if soon we will have a local World windsurfing to replace myself and Gollit

We came to stay for a week. Then we forecast and there were some waves c be honest, to have waves here is m aren’t many swells with lots of frequenc hits proper it’s amazing, and proba videos and pictures are from here. So, forecast it didn’t look amazing, but w stay for a few more days, score some w some fishing and go to the far islands visited very often. One of the reasons with my boat is that I can go anywher want. Normally you have to take a little name for a typical Boat) and then th where they want but normally this trip is

We finally got some waves, and we sailed in a place called Cayo de Agua, the furthest Island of the whole Archipelago, also one of the most impressive for the tourist as there is a sand bar right in the middle so you basically have a bridge of sand bar with a blue lagoon on both sides. It is the first time someone ever windsurfed there and my first time Surfing there. For windsurfing it was very tricky as the wind was super light and almost cross offshore. The wave was powerful and beautiful, it wasn’t huge, but the size was more than enough to have fun. I managed to get a few waves, but it was super hard to turn. I think if the wind was a little bit stronger I would have a better time riding. I got a few waves and decided to go for my surf board and surf with my friends. I was the only one windsurfing and later my Friend Vrinda went kiting on the waves too. I have never broken a surf board in my life and that day for the first time I went for a little barrel and the lip hit my neck and then my board, as you can imagine the wave is quite powerful, the reef is sharp, but it was worth it. A few days later there was another swell coming, again nothing amazing on the forecast but it looked like we could have some fun. Federico Morisio wrote me telling me that he was invited by some travel agency and that he was coming with his photo and filming crew and asked me if I could take him to the spot to sail. I Said of course, I would be more than happy to show you my paradise, so we went again 2 days in row to get some sailing, the wind was lighter than the previous days and the waves were a bit smaller. I tried to sail but it was a mission, super light and again super offshore so I wasn’t having fun. Federico was out for over 2 hours and caught 2 waves but couldn’t do much. I gave up in half an hour so got my surf board again while he and my friend “Oscarcito” were floating and floating and pumping to get a wave. When I tried to sail I got one that broke on me and had to go out from the rocks! Next day, no wind no waves so we went for some trolling and get some fish for dinner. Fishing over here can be good but pretty much every time I go its super windy and rough, so we stay inside the archipelago. You need a lot of patience for trolling and you can be there for hours and hours and get nothing. A few days before we went for some trolling as well and got a few Barracudas which is also very tasty, but I really wanted to catch a wahoo. We were trolling for hours and right at the end of the session we caught one, around 20 Kgs so we had dinner for a few days. On that same day one of the 3 engines of the boat just turned off by itself and it wouldn’t start, It was already getting dark and we needed the sunlight to see the reefs and shallow waters as we were quite far from gran Roque and if we don’t have sunlight

we wouldn’t be able to see the shallow places and believe me, there are lots ! We still had two engines left and we could barely make the boat top get planning. So as soon as we got to land prepared the wahoo and it was amazing! Looking again at the forecast we saw something never seen in a long time 2 ground swells with over 16 seconds period. I couldn’t believe it, it was still far ahead, and it could change. I was looking at it every day and it was getting more solid them ever, like I Said, to have these kinds of conditions over here is very very lucky. Federico was lucky to even get one day of wind and waves, even though he couldn’t catch much waves, my friends had to go back home, and I tried to convince them to stay, one really had to take a plane back and work, Lolo My surfer friend decided to stay and check what was coming! The engine problem was the Fuel Pump, I took it down myself with another friend, tested it and yes it was the fuel pump, lucky enough I called all my Yamaha mechanics and managed to get a new one and make sure I got the boat ready for this amazing swell. The Waves finally came, and it was a dream. I´ve never seen that place like that before. Unfortunately, the wind was light except for one day but the wind direction changed and the only place where I could sail was weird because of the direction I managed to get 2 OK waves (with no pictures) but I did get some amazing surfing sessions!

Los Roques impresses me more every day. It is for me the most beautiful country in the world. Many people are afraid of coming to Venezuela but honestly Los Roques is probably one of the safest places on earth. I’m planning on doing another windsurfing / kitesurfing Camp at the end of the year because I really enjoy showing people my paradise. So, keep connected to my social media for the dates and I really hope you can join it with me!!!

There are boards volumes every 5 -10 litres in slalom boards, which are then used on different type of slalom or slalom\freeride sails, such as the AC-F, AC-X and AC-K.

We have prepared some extra info to help you choose better!

When learning to windsurf, the volume is essential on a board to have stability. Improving skills, we tend to buy boards which are having enough volume to uphaul in lighter winds, or not even that in stronger winds, or to have one board only to use in most conditions. Years ago, the volume was important, while nowadays the most important thing is mainly the width of the board. The central width is what allows to use the different sail sizes. The tail width size is determining the maximum fin size to use. Therefore, already from the width of the board we already know for which type of sail size it will work, and for which type of wind. This is what we mean.

Board width (cm) 55-65 65-75 75-90

Sail Size (m) 5.0- 7.0 6.5-8.5 7.0-9.0

Wind Range (knots) 40-20 knots 30-12 knots 10-27 knots

Generally, each board size is recommended for more sail sizes, but ideally each board has its best fit with one sail size and fin. Unfortunately, we cannot all have 6 boards in our car, therefore even if one sail size will fit at it’s best, a bigger and a smaller size will still fit well on the same board to have the right fun and performance. Taking a 70cm board for example, the best sail will be a 7.8 sail, but will work good with an 8.5 sail or a 7.0, which is still an amazing wind range, as in this example, you could get planning in 12-14 knots and hold it up to 28 kno9ts. This does not depend on the weight of the windsurfer. A lighter windsurfer will use the same combination in lighter wind, against a heavier sailor. PWA riders do not have problems in having to choose boards as they are allowed to use by rules, 3 board and 6 sails. They use normally 2 sails with one board, and they also still prefer one particular sail size on each board size. This is how they are normally equipped:

Board width (cm) 58-64 68-73 80-85

Sail Size (m) 5.0- 7.2 7.2-8.6 8.6-9-2

Wind Range (knots) 50-25 knots 28-11 knots 18-7 knots

Fin size (cm 31-34 36-38 43-47

Logically, the wider the board, the better it is for lighter wind as it allows to carry bigger sails and bigger fins. Often people tend to put too big sail sizes on smaller boards to plane earlier. It’s often useless if the sail and board are not proportional. Example, if you have a 68-wide board, and you put a 9.0 sail, the extra weight and power of the sail will just sink the board more heavily to the water. The fin will be too small to hold the power and the result is just a spin out, a heavier feeling, and the planning will be at the same time, if not worse than with the right smaller proportional sail. So, there is no short cut to try to hope to get planning on a smaller board, by just buying a bigger sail. It could be better to buy a bigger board and keeping the same sail.

The same goes to the opposite direction: using an even smaller sail on a bigger volume board to have more control in stronger wind. The volume of the board, in stronger wind and bigger waves, than what it has been made for, will just catch more wind, and fly all over the water without letting you have control. The too small sail does not have the power and profile to keep a bigger volume board on the water. We have prepared for you some general tables for you to find the different combinations for the best fit! Enjoy the study! COMBINATIONS A B C D E F G H

PATRICK

I’m turning 40 very soon. Windsurfing since 28 years now and after windsurfing I’m also a community nurse that help me to plan my time very well according to Wind guru. As a windsurfer I’m mostly doing wave riding and other than windsurf, I’m addicted to all extreme sports in natural environment. (Paddle, surf, mountain bike, skateboard, climbing…)…and bloody good sail tester! ☺

Vigouroux

We can see you often in the French magazines but rarely in contests: And yet I have a background as competitor swimmer. At the beginning I was going to all contest in wave and slalom. But quickly I understood that I needed to windsurf differently. To be honest I’m a bad competitor. In contrary as some other contest are giving me too much pressure and this pressure is not helping me. It prevents me to windsurf accordingly to my sensation. I have so much fun and pleasure when I do my Showman for fun rather than competing. Effectively I have the chance and pleasure to have as friend and photographer people like Jean Souville around me to shoot all my nice windsurf sessions. And we often work on some more atypical and artistic projects.

We heard that you are a kind of “Nerd in setting up your gear. Can you talk a bit about this feature?

Yes, I do have an annoying tendency to be obsessed and extremely meticulous about my settings. It's totally unbearable for me to windsurf with a bad tune gear. This relentlessness is related I think to my small size ... I can not compensate with my weight or my size to make my equipment work properly. I need everything perfectly adjusted so I can easily impose myself on my gear and make it react instantly as my imagination and my little body wishes. But my doctor still gave me blue and green pills to take at night so as not to think too much about it at night.

What do you prefer with Point 7 material? Do you also use the booms and accessories? In a very global way I will say that's their level of performance. More precisely it is the work of the flow of air through the sail. With my SALT PRO I really feel like I have the manoeuvrability of an extremely mobile wave sail with the glide, the hold, the airflow work of a slalom sail. With my small size I was used when the wind rises to quickly saturate to hold and work my sail. With my Salt it's amazing how the sail does not saturate in power and continues the contrary to accelerate more and more and remains very easy to work from the back hand in surfs and jumps. I remember being struck by this feeling from my first test of these sails. I also use the right mast C100 and the Carbone boom which is very comfortable with the octagonal shape and have the right rigidity need in wave riding. And finally, the Point 7 extension which is exactly that everybody need from an extension.

And logically you have an interest for the development of the material?

Yes, I have already often worked on the material development of my previous partners. I try to make the material in my hands work best, but I still have a part of my brain thinking about what could / should be changed to make things better. It takes a lot of time, it is not always the most fun to spend the day playing with the screwdriver ... But personally, it fascinates me, and I see how better to understand my material obviously helps

DON’t WAIT NEXT YEAR TEACH THEM NOW.

SPY

RICARDO CAMPELLO V 111

Type: Power Free Wave| Size: 4.0-6.4 | Wave Sailing, Bumb & Jump. Blasting strong wind.

We develop the Spy to be your strong wind slalom sail?

We develop the Spy to be your freewave sail?

We develop the Spy to be your Bump and Jump sail?

We develop the Spy to be the wave sail to let you hit hard and with control and lip of any wave around the world?

We develop the Spy to be your strong wind slalom sail?

• •

The question is YES to all 5 questions!

If you’re looking for power, but power which can plane in the lightest conditions and at the same time challenge even the toughest situations, this is the sail for you. Onshore, blasting on bump and jump conditions, this is the sail you are looking for.

The Point 7 Spy is much more than its billing as a Power Wave sail would imply. Offering an abundance of power and practicality over a wide wind range, it is a true all-round contender Particularly in onshore conditions and small waves, to use the power of the sail in the surf and jumping. Really good in Bump and jump also. A powerful masterpiece and a symbol of control. Using a rich forward positioned profile for great drive mixed with good skin tension, the SPY is a powerful yet extremely controllable sail which ensures you stay on top of things in the widest variety of conditions and range of winds. Undoubtedly the right choice for many and most. Power is nothing without control! Targeting an ideal blend of measured power and balanced handling. Assuring an efficient energy to the board, even with a shorter boom length, making it shorter than what you would normally expect on the sail size. Delivering power efficiently to the board, the Spy remains balanced in the hands with its short boom length making it feel smaller than its quoted area. From light wind wave sail, to high wind straight-line blaster; heavy weight’s power wave sail to intermediates tutor- the Spy displays the manners and practicality to cater for the demands of most. The key attribute is the Spy’s low focused power position, which provides constant usable power without pulling the rider on to their toes yet helps to pin the board down in extreme conditions and retain control always.

5-batten construction, with important profile along the lower 3 battens to satisfy the stability and power in all conditions. Two eyelet positions. The lower eyelet to create more opening of the lower leach to increase control in stronger wind, and the higher eyelet to increase power and acceleration. We do advise the upper eyelet, unless you are a lightweight sailor. A central profile with a thin leading edge. A great deal of shape locked low and forward in the draft, providing plenty of obvious bottom end power and drive. On its minimum setting, the pronounced profile is complimented with plenty of movement in its large Dacron luff panel and luff tube, its structure maintained by the bottom battens pushing forward to sit flush with the mast’s leading edge. Even on maximum setting the Spy displays plenty of shape, the bottom batten retaining plenty of rotation as the leech falls away significantly, to allow speed and fast release. 1

100% assembled with X-ply laminates, mixing the base with the 5 mil Anti UV-Black X-ply Laminate, the entire body with the 4mil Anti UV-Black X-ply Laminate, and 5mil X-ply transparent window. X-ply batten pockets for lighter weight and improved reflex.

This month we go directly to Fuerteventura to meet our distributor from the Canary Islands. Davide Zilli, not only an exclusive Point-7 distributor in the windsurfing world, but is active in many and different aspects of the sport. Let’s find out more!

DAVIDE ZILLI Distribution

‘Point 7 for me is the second family

and the second skin, I don t have to add any other word because if you are reading the journal probably you have the same feeling I have!.’’ I was born in Italy and I decided to change my life when I was 19 years old. At first, I was traveling around the world and working in a company teaching sailing and windsurfing. Everything changed in 2000, when I start windsurfing in Tunisia, from that moment I really understood what my future was. After few years my working company called me in Mexico to ask if I was happy to go to Greece Island to work and my reply was no, I will only accepted Fuerteventura!!!I was so focus in Fuerte because I was watching many videos and everybody was telling me that Fuerte is one of the windiest and waviest places in the world, so time for me to move !This was a key decision in my life, there I meet my awesome wife and I meet the general manager of an important windsurfing school and few months later I finished my old job to start full day teaching windsurfing at high level, like this I had the chance to grow up fast with my skills and start to wake up every day only thinking about manoeuvres or windy or waves. How did you decide to start the distribution of Point-7? In Fuerte like everyone knows since many years all the riders are coming to test and train, and after few years I decided to build my windsurfing company and of course I was enough preparing to choose the right one. After talking with Andrea I decided to go black because we have the same goals and passion, growing the sport and the young guys to have a better future ,and in same time give to the public the best gear possible .As soon as I realised the product is on the top I asked to Andrea to give me the chance to be a Dealer in Canaries, from where I started 3 years ago.

You are also running your own rental place together with your business partner Matteo. How did you to meet and why you opted for this kind of different idea of rental for windsurfing? Yes, I´m running a windsurfing /school shop in Sotavento with my business partner Matteo. We were working for same company in the beginning of my staying in Fuerte and we were neighbours as well ,one day he came up with the idea of doing something together, and I reply straight sure!!!That was 2 years before the dream come true because was impossible to found a right place to do it in Costa Calma where we are living. But 2 years later talking with other friend he also said he would like to make a surf shop school, my reply directly was‌perfect! This guy is called Richard and he is running a surf shop since 1992 in Fuerte, that was the key because he let Matteo and me be part of the shop and start selling products and promote our concept the RENT & GO! So now you know we are not 2 partners but 3, and for Richard is like a double satisfaction because his young soon Robyn Van Linden is competing for the black team. No one in south of Fuerte was really worried about this concept because the windsurfing school in the south are so big to do not care about what the people needs but to only take care about numbers!!!So here we start to teach people anywhere they want at the time they wanted, having the flexibility to choose beach and time to do the class. Fuerte is very famous for all his different spots, flat, wavy, strong wind or lighter, so why restrict the people to only one. Rent & Go offer to our clients a complete rig with two sails, and of course the client can change board or sails as much as they want during the rental. We offer theme almost every type of board, Freestyle, Wave, Freestyle /wave, free ride and, we have some Slalom, and that topped with the best sails in the market. All our customers are very happy with us because they come as a customer and they leave as Windsurfer friends. I also want to add in case is no wind we give them a sup boards or surf for free including in the rentals and transport the gear its quite easy because in all the rentals we give them the roof rack universal for all of kind of cars.

You are also PWA and EFTP judge. How do you like this role? PWA or EFTP? Freestyle, Wave or Slalom? Yes, I’m an international Judge, I love this role because I’m able to travel and stay all day talking about windsurf. I started working with Dunkerbeck like a Judge 4 years ago, and I can work with the slalom race director and after few days he asked me if I was interested to judge Slalom also, and you can imagine my answer. Just 1 month later I was engaging as well to judge for the EFPT in Lanzarote, and there the same story, the race director asked me if I want to judge the next competition, and same answer. Right now, for 3 years I have judged almost all the events around the world for PWA Slalom and Freestyle and the European tour, plus some random events. Being in contact with the professional riders make me happy because the show they giving to me is incredible. You are on the road quite a lot and you just became Daddy less than a year ago. How do you manage all this multitasking activity? Do you get time to windsurf yourself? Well the secret is my wife and my business partner Matteo, one is working hard with the baby and at the work, and the other is running alone the business when I’m travelling. Only like this I am able to do all the things. Sure, I have time, I mean not like before, but during the day me and my wife go to the beach with our van and one stay in the van with the baby and the other go in the water and then we switch. Did you ever compete yourself in windsurfing? No, I never compete myself, I always must work and no time to train properly.

Canaries could be seen as the European Hawaii. How is it to push a brand in this market, especially Point-7? Well that’s the hard part, it’s a very particular place because in our island the tax are lower than most places in the world and the customer think to go back to his country with a used or new gear, but is not like this because yes we have less tax but the price of the stuff is the same like everywhere else and we pay more for the shipment. Regarding sell the material in other island is also hard because wherever tis a school on the Canaries its normally an awesome spot, and the owner pretend to have the material almost for free because he is promoting the brand, and like all the people knows this is impossible. I’m very focus on the schools now because I guess we will have the best future if we will be able to reach a new windsurfing clubs because is the fastest way to be more visible.

I’m promoting Point7 a lot and I’m always looking for new ideas because if you are always doing something, you are active and productive. Next projects? In the end of June from the 27 to the 30, we will organise for first time in the history the EFPT in Costa Calma in the spot of Matas Blanca, where my friend Victor is running a new windsurf centre, of course with black sails. Point 7 will be one of the sponsor of the event and honestly without his help probably the event was not possible.

And the other goals trying to have part of the islands black!!! I also have a” secret project” coming up soon but I hope to talk about it soon, with a report and test because it will be super important for all the windsurfers!!!

APRIL 2018 | LAKE GARDA

At Circolo Vela Torbole.

25 countries at the Point-7 Headquarters. Windsurfing is a great sport which is done all over the world. Different conditions, different environments and needs. After 11years of Point-7, with over 40 distributors around the world, we finally all took time to meet at our Point-7 Headquarters on Garda!

Conca D’oro

Da Pedro | Malcesine

All 2019 sails were displayed, the full range of products and the distributors had the chance to learn about all the development behind the scenes. Important notes to service everyone better. For us it was great to learn from them feedback which will help us make things smoother for them, and in the end, once again to make Point-7 more efficient at 360°! The weather was not at its best, but for many who came from the other side of the world it was a great opportunity also to visit the Italian main cities close to Lake Garda, such as Venice, Verona and Milan, enjoy some real Italian food and culture. We would like to thank Hotel Santoni, Ristorante Da Pedro and Circolo Vela Torbole for the great hospitality offered to our meeting!

Traveling with

EXCESS LUGGAGE

Our Black Team travel the world with huge heavy windsurfing bags on monthly bases, if not weekly. They turn up to the check in of the airports with over 150kg of weight. It’s a nightmare if they are not organized and have an agreement before each travel. When packing the bags, you already are thinking if it’s not too heavy, if you can have that 1kg more. When driving to the airport you have already the feeling that you are going to be treated as a criminal. Once you rock up at the check in, you try to look at the counter with the friendliest person in charge, who will hopefully help, instead of tearing your ticket in front of your eyes! Here is how our Point-7 Black Team feels and does.

Ricardo Campello It’s a tricky time! I normally try to fly with AA or one World Alliance, so I know their gear policy but sometimes they don’t know the policy’s and try to screw you and over charge you. I normally let them say how much it is because they can make a mistake, and charge little, if it is the opposite then I tell them to have a look at their system. Once from Gran Canaria to Maui, a long time ago with Iberia, they wanted to charge us 5200 Euros. We had to wait for the shift to change, and make a really “illegal” trick and at the end we payed 150 Euros! There are many tricks, but it will also depend on the person who is attending you, and the airport. My advice is: take the least gear as possible and try to leave you bags light! If there would be a fair policy, there would be no reason to try to not to pay or fight to pay less. If you go on holiday perhaps check that it’s not cheaper to rent if you don’t stay long. If they ask me to weight the bags, and they are too heavy, I try to empty them a bit, and then re-put back in the most necessary…hoping they won’t catch me!

Yentel Caers I'm not a fan of flying with equipment. I prefer to drive with my van and take everything, but so long you check the rules of the company if they take equipment you will be fine. Of course, we all try to get the equipment for free with us, but usually it doesn't work like this. The price is really depending of the company. I luckily didn't have bad experience that I had to pay a lot of overweight. If you know before what you have to pay you're prepared for it! Luckily I do freestyle and don't have to carry around all that slalom gear.

Lena Erdil I make sure I know the rules. Then since it usually depends a lot on the check in person, I ask friends if they flew from the airport before. I’ve been very lucky so far. I think the maximum I had to pay once was 150 euro per bag but in that case, I made that 1 bag like 3 bags, so it was normal I guess. Make sure to know the rules and then try and interpret them in your favour. Normally always try to get around weighing the bags. Say it won’t fit or it’s too complicated and say oh but I know the weight it’s… insert the max allowed kg-1-2. Normally I make my bags heavier but leave myself the option of being able to repack at the airport in a way that will fit the regulations. Don’t be afraid of repacking at the airport… If you have more than 1 bag, the best trick that often works is to say that its 1 WINDSURF in several bags. So, you try and pay for just 1 EQUIPMENT even if it’s in more than 1 bag.

Bruno Martini Usually when I start traveling with my equipment I do my best to know approximately how much I will spend. You never know what can happen during your check in in the airport, because often also the people at the check in don’t even know their own policy with windsurfing gear, and they are already upset to see you with the big bags. Those who actually help us to make it smooth for up. I call them hero's! I'm a professional windsurfer, and I already know what I’m going to go through at the airport at 90%, but the 10% is always a surprise. Call friends who had experience in flying to a place you’d like to go windsurfing and ask them what airline they used, and all advices. This way you will have less expensive surprises.

ANCOR VICTOR | THE BOSS

MAGIC KNOT…

We have really seen a lot of different ways from people to downhaul the sail. Especially if using slalom sails where there is more powered involved. There are a lot of downhaul aids to help downhauling the sails, and if you are equipped with those kind of winches, that is fine. If you want to use your harness hook and your arm power here, it’s a simple knot. Do not ask us the name, just use it! Call it otherwise the Point-7 knot! It’s fast to make around the hook, and does not need any second to unknot, as it goes automatic. We like down hauling this way, as you really feel the tension in the mast, and if you have a bit of feeling, you can learn a lot from feeling this tension. With experience you can almost downhaul the sail to the right point, without having to look at it!

You can use this knot, on a screw driver, extension‌anything you can use to downhaul your sail by arm power, but first create a lopp.

Take the loop and make it catapult to the front.

Have the hook or a screw driver go through as shown in the diagram.

Make sure the 2 knots stay apart from each other‌. otherwise it will be impossible to open it!!

To downhaul the sail, put you back straight on the ground. Keep the arms straight and hold tight the hook from the harness. Tighten you stomach muscles and push only with your leg. This way, the back will not suffer, your arms need no power, and all the effort is only made by the leg. Make sure that the rope is not too short. Otherwise the leg will be too bent to be able to push effortless".

When finished down hauling, remove the hook, and knot will disappear automatically.

If you get used to this system, you can feel the tension of the mast, and soon you’ll be able to downhaul your sails to the right settings even with your eyes closed, but just by feeling when the tension gets to the right point!

Visiting Lake Garda: Point-7 Territory

Our Japanese Point-7 Black Team, with the organizer from the Defi Wind Japan, came to Lake Garda before taking part at the Defi Wind in Gruissan. They cam with a full TV and Photographer crew, to make sure they could prepare material to promote 2 main things. 1.

How windsurfing develops in a touristic area such as windsurfing, with important structures, shops, clubs, schools and specialized hotels ready to give services to windsurfers.

2.

The original Defi Wind event.

The reason was than to use the footage to promote all this to the local islands, such as Miyako, who has all the potential to become an amazing windsurfing paradise to book your next holiday!

Alu Boom 140 | Point-7

BOOM HEIGHT

Are you 190 tall? Place your boom at 150. Are you 180 tall? Place your boom at 140. This would be excessively easy! The boom height is a very personal setting according to your ability, body structure, power, wind intensity, waves and of course if we plan to go more upwind or downwind, but not only. The way your gear is developed or tuned, also makes a difference to where the boom needs to be placed.

Why does the lower boom offer less power? Lowering the boom is a bit like moving the track more forward. We move our weight more to the front leg, giving less pressure to the back leg, therefore to the fin and to the downwind rail. The board sits more flat, we sit more on the centre of the board depowering our gear. Therefore, if we lower the boom when we feel over powered it will be ideal for gaining extra control.

LOW boom in strong wind

Take a look at his photo of Andrea Cucchi at the Defi wind. Over 40 knots of wind on 5.6 sails. Both are having very low booms. Under the midpoint of the boom opening and both are over 190 tall! (Harness lines are short as the water is flat, so no need more length to absorb the waves. Remember this for next time.) Therefore, if Andrea is sailing around on low a boom, it does not mean that if you use a low boom you are a looser! The boom height is an important fact to play between power and control.

Why does the boom offer more power? It allows us to stay upright, and automatically the board rails more on the downwind rail. This allow pressing more on the fin and getting the max power out of these two components. This allows the board to fly more and be faster in lighter winds or to have better upwind.

HIGH boom in LIGHT wind

THE RULE IS SIMPE

If a board rides high the boom has to go higher. If you board rides low, you need to lower the boom position.

The height varies according to the control and power you want to obtain while sailing on your gear. With the height of the boom, you can adjust these characteristics. It's one of the three components together with the track position on the board, and with the harness lines length, which helps us trim our equipment to get the maximum efficiency between power and control. According to our body height and weight, the boom height can change by few cm, but the concept is the same for everyone. Stand on your board and the range for the boom height is from your mouth to your lower chest. Therefore, we can easy have adjustments up to over 20cm. Normally on the light wind sails, so for the sails over 7.5 the best positioning is between shoulders to chin height. Between 7 to 8m sails, a good position around shoulder height going 2cm lower in case the wind gets very strong. From 6.5m to smaller sails, we tend to go around chest area, especially if the wind and water condition get tough. Even with a 10m sail, you can put your lower then shoulder height if you are being caught in a lot of wind, and on a 6.3, you can put the boom at mouth height if you are very underpowered. Boom height varies more on wind intensity rather than wave conditions. For wave conditions, you will need to play more with the harness lines, but this we will take care next time. Some windsurfing boards are staying with their nose very high over the water and feeling very free, some with the nose lower and are feeling easier to control. On the board riding higher, it's automatic that you will need to keep the boom lower, then a board which is stickier and needs more lift from our trim. When you think about it again, the boom height, the track positioning, the harness lines length are all instruments that we have to increase or decrease the power and control of our gear. So which component needs to be adjusted first? If you had read the second issue of our Black Team Tips, you can get a quick idea. Today we have learned that with the boom height you adjust your comfort and power according if the wind increases or decreases. In the next articles, we will go more in details to the harness lines and track positioning. All very important facts that allow you to balance the trim of your gear over the water surface and into the different wind strength which are making a difference between being fast as a real pro, to be the slowest and wasting a lot of strength on the water. The difference of the settings are centimeter's, so it's a matter of understanding why you are not comfortable, and without being lazy, getting back to the beach and adjusting the components.

JAPAN

PWA Japan was the first slalom event of the year for the super pros. Unfortunately, the wind was not pushing to have lots of slalom, but one elimination where the most focus rider can take the win in one shot..one opportunity! Lena Erdil from our girl’s Black Team was leading the final, till she decided to go to the wrong mark, realize, lose one position and finish second this first event! Still a great result for the team. Well done Lena.

KOREA

Straight after PWA Japan was the week after the second PWA slalom event in Korea. Korea, more precisely Jinha beach. The beach is located between Ulsan and Busan. It’s a typical fisherman village, with a nice seafront. We are used to see this spot with gusty side offshore winds, but for the first time, Jinha had delivered some amazing powerful up to 40 knots conditions. Lena Erdil again in a final 2° place in the women fleet. While for no points our young 18years old Basile, has finished on the 11th place. from We are super proud from both results. Basile especially is fitting in our Black Team philosophy which is to support and help new young talents climb up the rankings in the PWA pro tour and helping. Same points with the 10th Basile has all the cards to be very soon in the elite of top riders constantly. Well done team!

SYLTSLALOM EUROPEANS

As we had Andrea Cucchi at the Defi Wind, most of the Black Team at the PWA in Asia, we could not have one of our Team riders also at the IFCA EUROPEANS SLALOM which took place this year on the island of sylt. After 5 eliminations, Francesco Scagliola from Italy, finised overall 5°. Francesco is another young talent who is only 17 years old and is climbing the rankings and improving his talent at a visible speed. We will see him again next month at his first PWA event in COSTA BRAVA. As his friends say, VAI VAI CICCIO!
