DAY

Dreaming Let me preface this by

saying I wouldn’t really change a thing about my own wedding day — not the dress or flowers or venue, and certainly not the man waiting for me at the end of the aisle. But let’s be honest, ladies: we never really stop day dreaming about what we could do (or could have done) on our dream day. That’s why so many of my girlfriends, engaged, married or single, have bridal boards on Pinterest. Wedding photos are captivating, and envisioning ourselves in the midst of those images is just plain fun. If I were to do it all over again (hypothetically, of course), my wedding would look a lot like the pages of this issue, with the stunning ball gown from page 19, the side-swept hair on page 18 and the colorful bouquet on our cover. I’d have a build-your-own s’mores bar, as suggested

in “Creativity Gets Sweet & Salty” (page 30) and spend my first few days as a newlywed in La Playa Carmel, my perfect destination according to our Honeymoon Quiz (page 38). Spring may be “wedding season” but I’ve always found fall and winter to be particularly romantic. Maybe it’s the passionate burst of autumn color, or the chill in the winter air that makes me want to snuggle up close to my own special someone. If you’re planning a fall or winter wedding yourself, I hope you find some inspiration for your own dream day inside this issue, too.

RECEPTIONS

A CRAFT BEER BOUTIQUE is certainly no runof-the-mill reception venue. Then again, you’re no run-of-the-mill couple. A seasoned space for special events, Moondog Growlers has hosted its fair share of bachelor parties, birthday celebrations and corporate functions, but in February, its Dunwoody Growler & Pour House realized new potential when it hosted its first wedding reception for Ashley Javo and Charles “Chuck” Eller of Alpharetta. To pay homage to their shared passion for craft beer, the couple hosted an intimate evening with 40 guests, during which everyone was encouraged to sample flights of specialty brews as they celebrated their special union. “[Moondog Growlers] is like a second home for us, and it felt right to have our reception there,” Ashley said. “Not only do they have a great selection of craft beer, Eleanor, Scott and their staff are so friendly and welcoming. It literally is a place where ‘everybody knows your name.’” A great option for any home brewer, beer aficianado or fun-loving couple who wants to break the mold, Moondog’s Dunwoody location can accommodate up to 50 guests with two bartenders and customized tasting experiences. Couples are welcome to bring in a caterer of their choice, wedding cake and acoustic musician or playlist to play over the store’s sound system. moondoggrowlers.com 8

Fun with WOW PhotoBooth

DETAILS

PHOTOTAINMENT Putting photography into the hands of your guests is no new concept. There’s the classic disposable camera method (remember Monica and Chandler’s wedding on “Friends?”), and a vintage photo booth spitting out film strips is always a hit. But this is the digital age, and with it comes endless digital options for wedding day documentation. One of our favorites is TapSnap Entertainment, which provides portable “phototainment” for any special event. Rather than an enclosed booth, TapSnap eliminates walls and ceilings to make the creative opportunities limitless. Guests simply gather around the camera and then use an advanced technology touchscreen to embellish their photos with graphics or text before printing or sharing via social media — and the couple comes away with a fun-filled gallery of priceless photography. tapsnap1036.com Another option for capturing those special memories, Decatur-based WOW PhotoBooth offers more traditional photo booth fun while still incorporating modern technology for customized wedding favors and mementos. Guests can strike six different poses for a film strip that’s customized with your wedding date and details, and then print two copies — one for themselves, and one for a special album for you. Plus, you can get all the photos on a CD or online hosting site for reprints. wowphotobooth.com

BOOKS FOR BRIDES Looking for a novel to devour while planning your own nuptials? Atlanta native and award-winning author Mary Kay Andrew’s latest release, “Save the Date,” offers an escape into someone else’s wedding story. Set in Savannah, the main character — a wedding florist — is forced to reassess her own opinions of love when a high society bride goes missing. Exploring the concept of second chances — with a healthy dose of mystery thrown into the mix — “Seely’s Shoes” by Alpharetta author Gail Heller follows a middle-aged woman to Italy to meet her fiancé’s family before her second marriage. And for mothers-of-the-bride, Northside author Haywood Smith’s “Wedding Belles” offers comic relief from any wedding madness.

KEEPER OF THE KIDS 12

AVOIDING the REGISTRY RUT Sure, you could create a bridal registry at one of the big box retailers, but do you really want the same sheets and set of china as all your sorority sisters? Choose items that are one-of-a-kind with Marguerite on Dresden’s custom bridal registry service. The Atlanta retailer offers elegant items for your wish list, from Vietri Italian dinnerware to customized bedding and monogrammed accessories. Guests can make purchases in Marguerite’s physical location at 1430 Dresden Drive or online. margueritesondresden.com

It’s a common conundrum: You want an adults-only ceremony and reception without isolating guests with little plus-ones. Enter Elegant Event Sitters, Inc. The solution to your pint-sized problems provides professional sitters for infants and kids, and even a “Pre-Teen Party Lounge” for older children, so your youngest guests can have fun of their own while you party in peace. eleganteventsitters.com

Kahlers assumed they would host a lavish affair for their 20th or 25th anniversary, but in March 2012, a leukemia and lymphoma diagnosis turned their lives upside down and left Bill fighting for his life. After a hard road of chemotherapy and a stem cell transplant, Bill was declared in complete remission in November 2012, and the Kahlers decided not to postpone their anniversary event for a milestone year. Their Celebration of Life & Love this past March marked their 18th year of marriage and Bill’s 55th birthday. The party was a joyous occasion that left not a dry eye in the room as the couple renewed their vows and Bill, a musician, serenaded his wife with the song “True Companion” by Marc Cohn.

CREATIVITY GETS AND

sweet salty BOLD BRIDES PUT UNFORGETTABLY FUN TWISTS ON WEDDING-DAY CAKES AND CATERING { WRITTEN BY C O L L E E N AN N MC N AL LY }

The big day’s ceremony

and reception are laced with traditions, whether inspired by culture, families or the couple’s own sweet story. One of the most challenging tasks — but, perhaps most fun — is putting your own twist on those traditional themes. And while there are a million ways to play with personalization for your big day, we’ve got a craving for custom cakes and catering. This season, the boldest brides on the Northside know creativity counts for big points in pleasing crowds. We’ve consulted local experts to dish out this season’s most sought-after trends: interactive catering stations, modern food borrowed from the festival scene and work-of-art wedding cakes for a reception that’s unforgettably yours. Ready to make your mouth water?

MIX, MATCH AND MINGLE Bite-sized tapas in shot glasses and on spoons have remained popular in weddings for a few years now. Maybe you’ve heard rave reviews or took notes from a friend’s wedding about “potatotinis,” mashed sweet or whipped roasted potato bars allowing guests to choose their own toppings and devour them elegantly in martini glasses. More than a trend, this alternative to sit-down dining continues to please large parties for multiple reasons. BB Webb, owner of the award-winning Carl House in Auburn, Ga., summed these up by explaining that the brides she works with want a “do-ityourself feel.” Whether these ideas come from Pinterest board obsessions, bridal magazine overload or their own imagination, Webb said she and her staff are willing to

attempt whatever a bride can dream up. While that sounds like a lot of work, Webb and her staff are there to provide all the pieces. One example she excitedly shares is a candy station, presented on vintage pieces of furniture that is as appealing to the eye as it is to the taste buds. Webb said that brides typically pick out different candies in a monochromatic fashion or to match the wedding’s color scheme. They also supply bags and ribbons, customized with the couples’ names and wedding date, making them a tasty party favor for guests to take home. Candy is just one “action station” Webb has noticed stealing the catering show at weddings lately. She lists other delectable serve-yourself bar ideas, including a smoked gouda mac and cheese station with a chef’s assortment of toppings or a bruschetta station with Italian bread rounds, pesto, roasted garlic, sliced tomatoes, fresh basil, puréed mushrooms, black olives, marinara sauce, crumbled goat cheese, olive oil, Parmesan cheese and cracked pepper. Some brides opt to do sweet stations as an alternative to a cake, with build-yourown bars featuring s’mores, cupcakes, pies, waffles or combinations of “sweet and salty” bites. carlhouse.com Although these serving stations are all about one-of-akind customization, the Carl House isn’t alone in the concept. Chef Andrew Brackner of the acclaimed, Atlanta-based Talk of the Town Catering and his team are dedicated to developing and perfecting menu items that you and your guests will love. Action station creations are customizable, so each one is prepared fresh-to-order and can accommodate those with dietary restrictions. Not only will your guests ooh and ahh over the presentation, but they’ll be piling up their plates. Plus, action stations — emphasis on the word “action” — get guests up from their seats and mingling around the room. Next stop, dance floor. talkofthetownatlanta.com

STEP RIGHT UP Fun-loving couples looking for a party atmosphere should start by taking cues from your time-honored carnival trends. And though cotton candy doesn’t likely come to mind when planning your wedding’s menu — even Webb admits she

ALL IN THE FAMILY Thinking you’d actually prefer to keep everyone seated through the meal, but still want to keep picky eaters pleased? Consider serving the food family-style from large dishes set in the middle of the table that guests can pass around. An easy conversation starter, this option is interactive yet contained and still allows guests to help themselves to portion size and please their individual palates.

32

THE NORTHSIDE BRIDE | Fall/Winter 2014

was wary of the idea initially — we challenge you tightlipped brides to consider it. As one of the first to partner with the evolutionary Cotton Cravings, the Carl House now has its own machine to spin sweet treats in-house. Best of all, they use pure organic sugar to create seasonal flavors as diverse as Peppy Peppermint Stick, Apple Pie Perfection, Tempting Toasted Marshmallow, Chic Chocolate Raspberry and more. At only 30 calories per stick, you’ll be guiltlessly licking your lips before you know it. For an unexpected pop of color, choose the bright LED sticks to light up the room and bring out the smiles — it is a celebration, after all. cottoncravings.com Another out-of-the-box catering idea borrowed from Atlanta’s festival scene is rolling in a food truck to feed your crowd. These restaurants-on-wheels make catering easy because they have the capacity to be stand-alone units. Their small but mighty mobile kitchens allow fresher cooking onsite, especially if your venue is in a remote location or doesn’t have the necessary equipment some caterers require. Since Andy Grimes, chef and owner of Ultimate Culinary Catering, started The Pickle in 2004, he said the buzz and hype for street food has grown exponentially. He also points out that while there’s a perception that food trucks are more causal and the cheaper option, he has served highend plates including caviar and rack of lamb from inside his set of wheels. Of course, foodie brides can still enjoy their

Action stations ... get guests up from their seats and mingling around the room. Next stop, dance floor. famous fish tacos, too. Ultimate Culinary Catering is one business that can offer the best of both, combining traditional buffet catering with the uniqueness of a food truck menu. thepickleatl.com You may also recognize the bright orange Ibiza Bites truck from around town as well as from appearances on The Food Network’s “Great Food Truck Race.” Owner Raf Morales agrees business is booming from wedding catering; however he said there isn’t a one-menu-fits-all served from his truck. Similar to action stations, brides and grooms can each build their own menu that best reflects their style — a true his and hers! Morales offers themed menus drawing from Southern-, Latin- or Asian-influence and has sample menus on their website for inspiration. ibizabites.com

CREATIVITY COUNTS — AND COSTS Last year, everyone was talking about “naked cakes” when a minimalistic approach was all the rage. Now, as those inspiration boards grow, so have the ideas. Loganville’s Sugar Kneads Cakery has a reputation for making ideas come to life in the form of sugary masterpieces. In fact, owner Tara Tomlinson’s knack for wacky even landed her an appearance on The Food Network’s “Cupcake Wars.” Her one heed of caution to brides that come, Pinterest-board pictures in hand, is to consider their real-life budget. “Most of the confusion is with budget,” Tomlinson said. “People’s cake ideas may not fit their spending plan.” While Tomlinson

can help your wildest wedding-cake dreams come true, she advises to first understand the attached price tag, as custom designs can be pricey. sugarkneads.com Before you schedule your consultation with a cake designer, do your math and don’t get discouraged. Once you bring in those pictures and ideas to someone like Megan Eden, creative sales director at For Goodness Cakes in Norcross, she can offer tips and tricks to creatively stack tiers without overreaching your pockets. She cites sugar flowers as fun and elegant ways to scale back, asking, “Why not get more bang for your buck with a few ideas that are bigger and bolder, rather than a showcase of several small ones? “Detail is absolutely gorgeous on wedding cakes, but doesn’t show up in pictures from far away,” Eden said. And since those memories captured on film will last much longer than the cake, choose those additions wisely. What will stand out in the candid shots of cutting the cake is interesting structure, incorporated design that complements the bride’s dress or varying sizes of tiers. Eden approaches each project as if the bride and groom are commissioning a unique piece of art decor to be displayed during their reception, rather than just another check on the to-do list. That, after all, may be priceless. forgoodnesscakes.net Perhaps you’re jotting down some unique ideas all your own as you finish reading this. Maybe none of the above ideas are for you, which is okay, too. Trends go in and out of style, but what we’re holding onto from these is one, simple rule: have fun planning and personalizing your special day. NB

It’s no secret w e ddi n g

planning is all about the bride. She’s in charge, it’s her idea and we can bet she’s the one steering the creative getaway car. But for a picture-perfect, smooth celebration, the guy’s got to have a little bit of a clue as to what’s going on — and the more he can show off what he knows (without being told), the better. We cornered two of the city’s brightest in fashion, grooming and know-how so that every groom can look great and be cool from the day he pops the question to the birdseed, bubble or sparkler shower he’ll run through with his new wife. So guys, take heed (and notes) on our how-to guide for being the best groom ever.

GUY GROOMING 101 Probably one of the least considered elements of a groom’s big day is his beauty routine. And while he probably doesn’t need a full spa day to prep and pamper, there are some things to consider for skin that looks kissable for the big day. Renee Christen, co-owner of Atlanta’s newest Roosters Men’s Grooming Center location in Sandy Springs said, “The most important consideration for a groom when preparing for the big day consists of using skin-friendly products and getting plenty of sleep.” This means stick with what you use on a regular basis, avoiding new products with harsh chemicals or intense exfoliates in the days leading up to a wedding. “It is also important for a groom to sleep

OUR FAVORITE GUY GIFTS waistline and the coat should always cover your seat. Everything else can be manipulated in the tailor shop.” She references, aside from fit, that the “look” for your big day should stick to something neutral — a play on modern versions of the classics for a resulting look that’s both elegant and timeless. The best way to decide on how formal you should go? Consider the time of day of the ceremony, whether it’s an indoor or outdoor ceremony and, of course, what the ladies are wearing. “The darker and longer the bridesmaids dresses, the more formal the men should dress,” Donachy said. “Colored suits and tuxes are tricky. Separates are easy to work with, but will always tilt less formal. I love a jewel-toned dinner jacket for the reception or a winter wedding, but otherwise, keep those looks for the red carpet. Certain colors go in and out of style, but black, gray and blue will never date.” No matter what you decide to don your guys in, make sure you’re giving them enough time for tailoring. Most places will take at least two weeks to turn around a suit or tux, but if it’s custom or involves a lot of handwork expect about a month to six weeks. Even though Donachy recommends purchasing your suits or tuxes, she assures grooms on a budget that renting is still a great option, especially now with more to choose from in the fit and style departments. Her tip is to upgrade the rental with a hand-tied tie or pocket square that complements the wedding look. Grooms can score twice here, as both of these options make for pretty stylish groomsman gifts. The Modern Gent is by appointment only. Reserve your style session at themodern-gent.com. NB

This year, The Modern Gent introduced an entire line of custom groomsman gifts. Let your boys leave their mark on the big day with a combination cigar holder and flask that can be monogrammed, a new sharp, stylish watch or a brand-new pair of unique cufflinks. Roosters offers gift certificates for any of their services, sending the message that looking good is close to priceless. Plus, their robust line of Aveda products for men makes it easy to wrap up how much you appreciate them being in (and looking good for) your wedding.

Once a luxurious mansion built by an artist as a gift to his wife, a member of the Ghirardelli family, La Playa Carmel has since claimed the title of “Grand Dame of Carmel” for more than 100 years. The Northside Bride presented Celebrate!, our very first bridal and special occasions showcase to connect Atlanta’s top event professionals with an intimate group of brides and event planners. Guests enjoyed booths full of ideas and inspiration, a glimpse at the latest bridal fashions, incredible giveaways and more. Special thanks to our vendors and presenting sponsors!
