We had so much fun exploring the nooks and crannies of our communities that we wanted to continue while giving ourselves the opportunity to include hotspots that aren’t necessarily hidden, but certainly worthy of gem status. You were all so helpful with sending us leads last year, so we hope you’ll take this task with equal vigor. Year’s resolutions. Sure, I’ve made plenty of them, but I’ve always found them ineffective (I have journals with entries through February and barely used workout DVDs to prove it). And apparently I’m not alone. According to an article last year on Forbes. com, only 8 percent of people achieve their New Year’s resolutions. It’s not that I don’t believe in setting goals and making plans, but there seems to be a stigma associated with the making of resolutions that leads us to expect failure. So this year, I’m proposing a new spin to the tired ritual. Rather than making resolutions, why not join us in creating a Bucket List for the year? Forget that one, lofty aspiration — let’s dream up a whole host of places we’d like to go and things we’d like to do in 2014. And let’s carry it out all year long. We’ll start this month with our first edition (see The Bucket List: Entertainment

january 2014 EXTENDING A WARM

Welcome When we have news, we like to make sure it’s as irresistible as say … Jim Thompson, the celebrated Thai silk source, opening their first North American stand-alone showroom at the Atlanta Decorative Arts Center (ADAC). Founded in 1950 as The Thai Silk Company and renamed for its founder, Jim Thompson continues to be the largest producer of hand-woven fabrics in the world. With its soaring 12-foot ceilings and vibrant, colorful surroundings, the 7,000-square-foot “onestop” shop will be filled with captivating furnishings upholstered in Jim Thompson fabrics. As if you’d need more of a wow factor, suspended above the entry is a custom wooden canopy with a cutout foliage pattern reflective of Jim Thompson’s heritage, and lighting above projects a graphic pattern on the floor. While the entry walls are covered in Jim Thompson wallpaper and the materials and design of the entire showroom are inspired by traditional Thai wood paneling found in Thompson’s Bangkok home, the entire open and airy space pops with color and is a unifying backdrop that allows for boutique showroom spaces for each of the partners. These partners, all exceptional in the luxury marketplace, are Holly Hunt, Pierre Frey, Phillip Jeffries, the Caperton Collection and Remains Lighting. Nancy Caperton of the Caperton Collection said, “Jim Thompson Atlanta provides the perfect palette to showcase the finest furnishings and fabrics whether it is from traditional favorites and transitional classics to comfortable contemporary or bespoke.” jimthompsonfabrics.com

BYE-BYE BIG BOX DRUG STORE, Hello Neighborhood Pharmacy When Johns Creek residents Jennifer and Michael Shannon set out to open their own pharmacy, the couple knew they wanted to offer something unique so they took a cue from the old fashioned values of the “mom and pop” pharmacies of yesteryear, blended them with some of the latest technological advances, and mixed in Jennifer’s wealth of experience as a clinical pharmacist with Michael’s head for business. With another talented clinical pharmacist named Jenna Ferrara on board, Lily’s Pharmacy officially opened its doors last October. Unlike the big box pharmacies scattered here and there, Lily’s Pharmacy offers a number of tailored services designed to fit the needs of its growing customer base: A free monthly supply of vitamins for children of patients who order or transfer their prescriptions to Lily’s Pharmacy, free delivery within the pharmacy’s service area, 24/7 emergency contact line, a private consulting room and personalized medications through compounding. “We are committed to providing an unparalleled level of care. PHOTOS COURTESY OF ALLIANCE THEATRE

This January, nationally produced, award-winning Atlanta playwright Janece Shaffer’s new production, “The Geller Girls” is premiering at the Alliance Theatre. According to Susan V. Booth, Alliance artistic director, “Welcoming Janece Shaffer home is always a gift for the Alliance Theatre and our audiences. With ‘The Geller Girls,’ she is bringing us all a joyous and deeply human look at a particularly vivid Atlanta moment.” As an observer of human relationships and a chronicler of Atlanta life, Shaffer has created a piece that explores the rich history of Atlanta during the Cotton States Exposition of 1895 and its effects on one Atlanta family. Some of Shaffer’s other works include “Broke,” “Bluish,” “Managing Maxine,” and “He Looks Good in a Hat.” Shaffer’s play “Broke,” which premiered at the Alliance Theatre in 2011, was awarded the Gene-Gabriel Moore Playwriting Award for Best World Premiere by an Atlanta playwright and earned actress Tess Malis Kincaid a Suzi Award for Best Lead Actress in a Play. “The Geller Girls” will run on the Alliance Stage from Jan. 15 through Feb. 9 and tells the story of young sisters Rosalee and Louisa Geller. 404-733-4650, alliancetheatre.org — Tynisha Ferguson

Also on tap this month is cookbook author Hiroko Shimbo, in town on Jan. 28 at Midtown/Ansley Mall and Jan. 29 at East Cobb, to talk about his book “Hiroko’s American Kitchen: Cooking with Japanese Flavors.” And for all of you Italian foodies out there, Chef Gino Noci of Trattoria l’ Cchè c’é c’é in Florence, Italy will be the featured traveling instructor at the East Cobb location on Jan. 31. Still not sold? How about this: Although most classes include wine after cooking demonstrations, there are strictly “Wine” and “Wine and Food Pairings” classes as well. This quarter’s offerings include wine classes by country or region with Don Hackett, who is both a certified sommelier and a certified specialist of wine, and several wine classes with Francophile Jennifer Pounds. We’ll see you there. cookswarehouse.com

began with a series of six small concerts at Scottsdale Farms in Milton in 2007. They now hold regular seasonal outdoor performances at Chukkar Farm in Alpharetta and Chattahoochee Nature Center in Roswell. They held their first indoor concert at the Gwinnett Performing Arts Center in September, with more performances scheduled in January and April. “What we do is really different,” Casto said. “We want you to be involved. We want you to engage with us. There’s storytelling, there’s music; there’s an informality to it that lends itself to a sense of community.” Casto and his team brought the outdoor feel to the indoor arena at Gwinnett by trucking in 18-foot maple trees and hay bales to recreate the atmosphere they love, and seated some audience members onstage. Casto said that a lot of people who attend their shows have built relationships with each other. Casto and his fellow singers, songwriters and musicians have also built relationships with the community. “We pick a local charity for each show and drive a portion of the proceeds back to them, and give them some attention during the show. They’re the ones doing great work,” Casto said. “We’re not just musicians coming in to do a show. We’re trying to bridge that gap and make an impact, locally, from day one. I don’t see us ever changing that.” Recent beneficiaries of Home By Dark productions include Good Samaritan Health Center in Atlanta and Canine Assistants in Alpharetta. The Gwinnett Center concerts benefit organizations like Duluth-based Right To Hike, Inc. and Rainbow Village.

arguing cases in court. These days, the place to find her is Cre8fit.

“I was getting burned out on litigation, and I’d

always loved working out,” said Cutter, who had practiced law for 15 years. “It was a call from my mom that inspired me to take this plunge.” For Cutter, exercise has always been a passion. She grew up admiring her mother, who was an aerobics instructor and personal trainer. “I remember being inspired by the fun in her classes,” she said. “Sure, you’d hear moans and groans — but you could always count on hearing laughter, too. Like my mom, the idea of making sure my clients are having fun while working out is always something I strive to achieve.” It took a year to open Cre8fit, a boutique fitness studio that opened in Vinings last March, so Cutter took time to broaden her own fitness education. When it comes to the classes at Cre8fit, her goal is to offer options that you won’t find in every gym or fitness studio. For example, the RealRyder cycling classes, which use stationary cycles that move like road bikes, are only offered at a handful of locations in the Atlanta area. Other class options include CrossCore, barre, and BOSU. And class sizes are kept small to ensure that every participant gets personalized attention from the instructor. “I’ve already had several clients tell me that the studio was a great help to them,” Cutter said. “It brings me such joy and satisfaction to hear that this studio has contributed to bettering someone’s life.” As Cre8fit grows, Cutter has her eye out for additional cutting-edge class formats to add to the schedule and looks forward to becoming known as a business that actively partners with the Vinings community and beyond. “After getting that call from my mom, I remember asking myself, ‘What would you do if you weren’t afraid?’” Cutter said. “You only live once, and if there is something you want to do, don’t wait. Welcometo a class at Orangetheory

Fitness, a franchise with locations from California to Florida that arrived in the Atlanta area last fall. “There are many benefits to this type of group personal training class,” said Kim Fishman, co-owner of the Sandy Springs location. “For example, you get a full-body workout at every class, which eliminates plateaus in training. And the guesswork is completely eliminated from your workout.” Classes are designed around the concept of heart rate monitor training. Every participant wears a monitor during class, and their heart rate maximum percents are displayed on large TV screens in the workout space. This enables both participants and the fitness instructor to determine if they are working too hard (the red zone) — or not hard enough (green, blue, or white). “The goal is to have members obtain a heart rate maximum of 85 percent for 12 to 20 minutes during the class, reaching the ‘orange effect,’” Fishman said. “At this point, your body is working harder for the effort you just put in, therefore increasing the fat calories burned, up to nine times the amount you typically burn in a normal day.” Classes are 60 minutes, which allows participants to get in a full-body strength training session, cardio session and stretching, said Pavel Stuchlik, Orangetheory Fitness Atlanta area developer. And there are no more than 24 participants in any class, which ensures that people receive personalized attention from the instructor. “Almost anyone is a good fit for this workout, ranging from brand-new exercisers to the elite athlete,” said Julie Stewart, coowner of the Sandy Springs location. “And the workout can be modified for those with physical restrictions or past injuries.” Each workout begins on either a water rower machine or a treadmill. Those on the rowers complete a three- to fourminute warm-up. Next, they head over to the strength training area where the instructor leads participants through blocks of exercises using free weights, as well as cutting-edge tools such as BOSUs and ab rollers. Those who start on the treadmills complete a warm-up and then begin interval training that includes various inclines and speeds, depending on whether the participant is a walker, jogger or runner.

Halfway through the workout, the people on the treadmill head to the rowers, and those in the strength training area get onto the treadmills, Stewart added. “One of the things I think sets us apart is that we take accountability seriously,” Fishman said. “Our studios are small, and we love reaching out to our members and encouraging them to come back and work out if they haven’t been for awhile. We’re here to help you reach your fitness goals.” To be as accessible to members as possible, Orangetheory locations are open 364 days each year, only closing for Christmas Day. Locations are now open on Howell Mill Road in Midtown, in East Cobb and in Sandy Springs, with Buckhead at Piedmont and Midtown at Metropolis locations coming soon. Everyone’s first class at Orangetheory is free. Month-to-month memberships are also available for four and eight sessions per month, and for unlimited sessions. orangetheoryfitness.com PN

A FEW TIPS FOR T H E F I R S T-T I M E R Before you head to your first Orangetheory Fitness class, Kim Fishman, co-owner of the Sandy Springs location, has the following tips for you: • Listen. Listen to your body first — and the instructor second. Go at the pace that is doable for you. • Learn the lingo. There are certain terms used during an Orangetheory workout, and it takes a few classes to really get the hang of them. But don’t worry. Your instructor will walk you through these terms. • Be patient. Don’t expect to see results overnight. If you stick to the workout and a healthy eating plan, they will come over time. • Ask questions. Don’t be afraid to ask — instructors are there to help!

Ingredients: 2 tuna filets 1 pinch salt and pepper mix 1 quart salad mix blend 1/4 cup red onion, sliced 2 tablespoons toasted almonds 1/4 cup red beets, roasted 1/4 cup yellow beets, roasted 2 ounces dressing (recipe follows) 1/2 ounce pomegranate syrup (recipe follows) 1 tablespoon pomegranate seeding Sear tuna in a sauté pan in hot oil for approximately 35 seconds or until the meat reaches 350 degrees for rare. Drain the tuna from the oil and season with salt and pepper mix. Combine the salad blend, red onion, slivered almonds, roasted beets, salt and pepper and dressing and toss. Pile the mixture high into the center of the large round plate. Slice the seared tuna on a cutting board into 1/2-inch slices. You should get 10 or more slices per portion. Fan the tuna out in front of the salad, inverting the last end piece so the red side is showing for the presentation. Drizzle the pomegranate syrup and dressing over the tuna and then sprinkle the tuna and top of the salad with the pomegranate seeds.

Let’s See That Smile! ARUGULA AND D’ANJOU PEAR SALAD, LEMON AND SHALLOT VINAIGRETTE Serves 4 – 6 Recipe courtesy of Chef Mel Toledo of Foundation Social Eatery, coming soon to Roswell Listen up, ladies: In addition to being high in fiber, a nutrient linked to reduced breast cancer, heart disease and type 2 diabetes, pears also contain folate (great for expecting or nursing moms) and boron, which helps our bodies retain calcium, reducing the risk of osteoporosis. Be sure to leave the skins on — a pear’s skin contains three to four times as many phenolic phytonutrients as the flesh, which means more antioxidants, antiinflammatory, and cancer-fighting properties. Ingredients: 12 ounces fresh young arugula, washed and dried 1 D’Anjou Pear, thinly sliced 1/2 cup at leaf parsley, picked, washed and dried 1/2 cup hazelnuts, lightly toasted, roughly chopped Kosher salt and fresh ground black pepper to taste 2 ounces shaved Parmesan cheese

WellStar offers essential screenings that all adults over fifty should have. The comprehensive examinations and screenings range from basic physicals to cancer screenings. As we get older, disease risk factors increase, so annual screenings are of vital importance. There is nothing more important than finding a problem in its early stages. Early recognition will lead to successful treatments and cures. Basic physicals, which include height, weight and BMI, are imperative for tracking health changes and maintaining your physical health. To ensure a healthy heart, blood pressure and cholesterol screenings should be conducted at every physician visit. Discovering high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels is difficult without screenings because these diseases do not have signs or symptoms. Three out of 10 adults aged 65 and older have diabetes and millions of adults have pre-diabetes. WellStar’s diabetes screenings are essential in recognizing this disease in the beginning stages. WellStar strives to leave patients with a sense of calmness after they receive a cancer screening. The Zero Sleepless Nights program ensures that patients never wait more than a day or two for their test results. Consequently, women who receive mammograms and cervical cancer screenings will be able to sleep soundly knowing that dedicated physicians are working hard to get their results. Another important screening applicable for both men and women is the colorectal cancer screening. This screening will help adults over fifty reduce their chances of cancer or catch the disease early.

BUCKET LIST VOLUME 1

s the premier lifestyle resource for Atlanta’s Northside since 2000, we’ve got 14 years worth of tips tucked into our back pocket. We’ve got a wealth of information on the best places to go and things to do in our communities, and we’re eager to share. This new series, The Bucket List, is our “best of the best,” if you will. It’s full of things you simply must do this year, including some of our personal favorite hotspots, and a few places we’re dying to try ourselves. This month, we kick off with Entertainment & Attractions, followed by Shopping & Retail (April), Cultural Arts (July) and Dining (October). As always, we’re welcoming reader suggestions. If you know a business that simply must make a subsequent Bucket List, please email myturn@pointsnorthatlanta.com.

Smith 3 Earl Strand Theatre First opened in 1935, this majestic art deco cinema in Marietta is four years older than Ponce de Leon’s beloved Plaza Theatre. In its heyday, it hosted the premieres of film noir features, Fred and Ginger musicals and Technicolor classics, but in 1976, it closed the curtains on its silver screen. And so it sat uninterestingly for more than three decades until reopening for movies, concerts and plays in 2009. The venue itself is a must-see attraction for movie buffs and nostalgia enthusiasts alike. Plus, the entertainment selections beat the heck out of whatever half-baked family flick is dominating the box office this week. 117 N. Park Square, Marietta, 770-293-0080, earlsmithstrand.org

THE HONDA/MOTORCYCLE SAFETY FOUNDATION CAMPUS

Does the smell of oil and rubber make your pulse quicken? Does the purr of an engine put a smile on your face? That’s the little Evel Knievel inside you, telling you there’s no thrill quite like the one you’d get on the back of a motorbike. One training campus inside the American Honda Complex in Alpharetta provides its patrons with everything they need to become motorcycling mavericks, on road or off, short of the star-spangled jumpsuits. For those that have never ridden a motorcycle, their courses may be bucket list-worthy on their own. For others, they can lead to future crossings off. After one PHOTOS COURTESY OF ALPHARETTA CVB two-hour session, you’ll be miles closer to motoring up a mountain, (safely) popping a wheelie or biking across the country. Until you’ve heard of it, chances are there’s nothing like WhirlyBall on your bucket list. Of course, once you’ve found out this noble sport exists, there’s no way of stopping it from taking a premier spot. That’s because WhirlyBall is an athletic experience unlike any other, right here in Roswell. It’s the kind of game where strength, speed and stamina don’t mean much … Burliness does not equate to whirliness. A great sense of humor, however, is certainly useful. Bucket lists are all about oneof-a-kind, unforgettable activities and WhirlyBall is one. It’s also just ridiculously fun. If you had to compare it to some lesser pastime, WhirlyBall is most like a combination of basketball, lacrosse and good, ol’ fashioned bumper cars. Players use Jai-Alai scoops to launch whiffle balls into plexiglass goal holes, all while piloting an electric chariot called a WhirlyBug. A WhirlyBug is a bumper car built for speed. During a typical five-on-five game, red and yellow WhirlyBugs whiz to and fro with more grace and more precision than their state fair frequenting counterparts. Points are scored, bonds are strengthened and glory is found in the front seat of a vehicle not much bigger than a Cozy Coupe. 5130 Commerce Pkwy., Roswell, 770-998-6161, whirlyballatlanta.com

MOUNTAIN 3 KENNESAW NATIONAL BATTLEFIELD PARK Around these parts, there are few national parks as steeped in history as Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park. This Civil War battlefield is replete with historical markers and hiker-friendly wooded trails that carve up, around and down both Big Kennesaw and Little Kennesaw mountains, making the 3,000-acre park a popular spot for many. On his way to Atlanta, General William T. Sherman came up against Confederate forces in Little Kennesaw, the fields and forests surrounding the mountain. For nearly a fortnight, a battle raged but the rebels succeeded in the end. In one of his early reports to the White House, Sherman said, “Kennesaw … is the key to the whole country.” At the time, he was right. A union victory at the foot of Kennesaw Mountain would’ve made that whole “March to Sea” thing a walk in the park. The synecdoche stays true today, not because of Kennesaw’s tactical significance, but because of its distinctly American blend of nature and history. 900 Kennesaw Mountain Drive, Kennesaw, 770-427-4686, nps.gov/kemo

AMICALOLA FALLS STATE PARK

Before you tackle hiking the Appalachian Trail, you’ve gotta see Amicalola. By far the tallest waterfall in the Southeast, the falls lie mere yards away from the Appalachian Approach Trail in a crest of the Chattahoochee National Forest in Dawsonville. A meandering staircase lets you take in the waterfall from all angles. It’s especially striking this time of year, with more visibility than in the summer. Should you find yourself in need of diversion after a thorough observation of the natural wonders, the surrounding area allows visitors to partake in whitewater rafting, fishing, horseback riding and more. Consider it your training for when you finally take on Appalachia. 418 Amicalola Falls State Park Road, Dawsonville, 706-344-1500, gastateparks.org/info/amicalola

Lake Lanier Canopy Tours

Sometimes just hanging out can feel like a bucket list moment. Especially if you happen to be hanging from a wire among the upper branches of lakeside pine and oak. If you’re going to go on a zip line tour at some point, you might as well do so in the picturesque woodlands around Lake Lanier. This particular company offers daytime as well as nighttime tours. You may have been zip lining before, but have you ever zoomed around a placid moonlit lake? After the sun has gone down, the boats have been docked and the fisherman have all gone to bed, you could be combating the chilly night air by getting your blood pumping on a highflying network of zip lines. 7000 Lanier Islands Pkwy., Buford, 678-622-3990, lakelaniercanopytours.com

3 Tallulah Gorge One of the most impressive canyons this side of the Mississippi, Tallulah Gorge is two miles long and nearly 1,000 feet deep. In winter months, visitors hike rim trails to several overlooks including to a suspension bridge swaying 80 feet above the rocky bottom, providing spectacular views of Tallulah Falls. Six separate cascades with Shakespeareansounding names like Tempesta, Oceana, Bridal Veil and Lovers’ Leap flow together to form the falls. There are plenty of adventures in store for the more extreme among us, too. DON’T YOU WANT TO STAY ...

ON MOBILE BAY 50

Points North | January 2014 | pointsnorthatlanta.com

With a cold, inevitably

rainy season hitting the Southeast, we can double down on the fact that you’re already combing the web for Spring Break ideas — heck, maybe just weekend ideas that get you out of the mist, out of the house and into something exciting. And the possibility of heading somewhere that doesn’t boast earmuffs on its packing list sounds like a trip that needs to get booked right away. So, pack the car and head south for the winter, hitting up an underrated oasis of nature, beach, wildlife and some really, really good eatin’ in Mobile Bay, Ala.

THE DELTA’S HIDDEN HAVEN PROVIDES FUN FOR ANY KIND OF FAMILY VACATION { W R I TTEN BY J ENNIFER SMITH WILLIA MS }

If You’re Bringing the Whole Family Spring Break usually means a week out of school with kids in your hair, so why not stimulate those brain cells while they’re off, letting them discover the natural history still happening on a daily basis in the Five Rivers Delta Safaris. From a pontoon boat ride through the marsh, trailing gators through the grass and trolling for Alabama’s vast array of birds to a hands-on wildlife center that gets the kids up close and personal with the Delta and its inhabitants, there’s a full day of educational fun without a video game (or, for their sake, a schoolbook) in sight. Be one of the fi rst to take a tour through The GulfQuest National Maritime Museum, which opens this spring. Explore more than 36,000 square feet of exhibits targeted to engage and fascinate both you and your pre-teens, all built to resemble a container ship. Trivia for the day — Mobile is actually the birthplace of containerization, making this regional attraction the only maritime museum of its kind on the entire coast. The $60-million project is built atop 856 concrete pilings, all 40 feet deep into the river and provides a 500-year long history on maritime exploration and what’s happening today. For you and your crew, this means an interactive wonderland of maps, weather patterns, ship blueprints and more. Even the bathrooms are tiled in shipping signals. And, once you’ve made it to the top and your little one takes his turn

“steering” the ship into port, you can get a glimpse (i.e. family vacation photo op) on the bow, overseeing the entire Mobile Bay. The perfect place to grab a bite after a day of fun? On your way back across the bridge, stop in at The Original Oyster House for the city’s best fried shrimp and seafood gumbo and a view of Mobile Bay. For Empty Nesters Ready to Really Vacation Vacations are the spice of life, now that you don’t have a carload of kiddies in tow. Keep it coming with a tour for your sophisticated taste buds. Not only does the Gulf coast stake claim in the best of seafood and shellfish, but the way they cook it, and their secretfamily-recipes of the classics just might make you feel like a kid again. Start the day in the square and stock up on snacks, like the fresh roasted nuts from the A&M Peanut Shop, and a meal that’ll make you want to fast for weeks at Wintzell’s Oyster House. My personal favorite (recommended by a heart-and-soul kind of server, Miss Pinky) is the “Bowl of Love,” which is basically all of your favorite seafood tossed in the most comforting of creamy sauces and dappled with just the right spices THIS PAGE: PHOTOS COURTESY OF JENNIFER SMITH WILLIAMS; GULFQUEST MUSEUM: FACING PAGE: PHOTO COURTESY OF MOBILE BAY CVB

to make you want to hug yourself and your neighbor. They’ve also got a hearty beer selection, and the best biddies on the half shell in town. Once the sun sets, grab a casual seat at Callighan’s Irish Social Club in the adorable Oakleigh Garden District. It’s a step outside the seafood realm but serves the city’s best burger and its most treasured small-town sounds from local rock riots to eclectic Irish bands. Need a reason to eat? Don’t hesitate on another dozen, because the eatin’ isn’t just good, it’s doing good. The Oyster Trail supports these little guys as essential playmakers for the water quality of Mobile Bay. The oyster beds filter water, remove excessive nutrients, protect shorelines from erosion and provide habitats for more than 300 species. The industry not only provides jobs for the oystermen who harvest them, but for the companies that prepare and ship them throughout the country. Follow the downtown treasure hunt finding over a dozen large fiberglass oysters that have been painted by local artists and contain educational information on the importance of oysters to the Mobile Bay Area. For Adventure Seekers A small-town siesta doesn’t necessarily mean quiet time and overeating. In fact, with its buzzing local ecotourism industry, there are so many things to do in Mobile Bay, and so many ways to see the city. A personal favorite for us was learning how to ride a bike again (no, it’s not like they say) through the gorgeous squares sprawling from historic downtown Mobile Bay. Two-Wheel Tours pairs your group up with an adorable, energetic husband and wife team who knows this city like the back of their hand brake. Transplants from right here on the Northside, they’ve got a literal handle on what newcomers want to see and hear. It also doesn’t hurt that you’ll be burning off the calories you consumed the night before. If you’re looking to sweat less and see more, hit up the Airboat Rides that take you on an intimate trip through the delta. The captain is like someone who grew up wading through these swamps and learning the hard way where the biggest gators hold court. But now that he’s behind the wheel, he gives tourists the absolute coolest tour of the waterways, complete with baby gator pools sightings if you’re there in late spring, PHOTOS COURTESY OF MOBILE BAY CVB

BILOXI If the saying “What happens

in Biloxi, stays in Biloxi” exists, well …, I blew it. The best part is I didn’t even think twice about it. The very second someone asked how my trip to the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Biloxi went, I whipped out pictures of the candy-apple red Fender guitar delivered to my room. And the pictures of me learning how to DJ set off a surprising stream of memorable monikers that ended with one that finally struck a chord: DJ Trail Mix. After all, what better place to channel my inner rock star than one of the Hard Rock Hotels & Casinos? A short flight from Atlanta, Biloxi is the ideal hotspot for a quick getaway, and just far enough that trying something new suddenly becomes an unexpected adventure. Take room service, for instance. Anywhere else, the call is for average food and drinks. Not here. Thanks to The Sound of Your Stay, an amenity program offered brand-wide at Hard Rock Hotels & Casinos, guests in Biloxi get an authentic experience unavailable elsewhere. Checking out the walls covered in 58

legendary music paraphernalia that spans generations and genres alike, I already felt like a kid in a candy store, but soon discovered the real fun begins at checkin. In addition to a warm welcome and key to my room, I also received a code to download my choice of three themed playlists assembled by celebrities and music professionals exclusively for Hard Rock. The complimentary music download program included “City,” cutting-edge rock and electronic sounds, “Players,” which reflects the classic side of Hard Rock, and “Resort,” more recognizable pop-rock hits and up-and-coming bands about to break. With the beats bouncing off walls in my posh room, I couldn’t help but get inspired — and I confess, albeit reluctantly, that I had visions of sliding across the floor in my socks while jamming on my guitar, Risky Business-style. Without further ado, I called the front desk for Fender guitar room service. If picking from a menu of 20 Fender guitars, including Stratocasters, Telecasters and bass guitars doesn’t make

you feel like a true rock star, wait until it gets delivered to your room, along with a Mustang Floor Amplifier and a pair of SOUL by Ludacris High Def headphones. The latest addition to The Sound of Your Stay — and my absolute favorite element — lets guests match beats and remix music like a professional DJ, complete with more room service, of course. The pictures of me hovering over a Traktor Kontrol S2 mixer, a laptop loaded with Traktor PRO 2 digital mixing software and a pair of hip headphones continue to garner comments and have already sent several friends to Biloxi in search of their own memorable moments. If rock star status isn’t in your wheelhouse, don’t worry. This 12-story hotel also features a Hard Rock Casino, where you can try your hand against Lady Luck at the home of the largest jackpot in Mississippi gaming history. More than 1,200 slot machines, 56 table games and a poker room await. I held my own for a while at the blackjack table but my good luck charm is a keen sense of knowing when

to say when, especially when a property also has an in-house spa. That’s my kind of table and unwinding at The Rock Spa is a gamble I’m willing to make over and over again. The Aveda Concept Spa features services such as facials, massages, body wraps and a salon, while more relaxation can be found at the über cool pool with swim-up bar and cabanas. Once the sun sets behind the sand along Biloxi’s coast, the night shines with plenty of places to appease the palate. Definitely don’t miss diving into the sushi menu at Vibe for incredible Asian-inspired surf, turf and roll. I recommend at least two nights so you can enjoy several of the five onsite restaurants including Ruth’s Chris Steak House and catch a concert at Hard Rock Live. Regardless of how long you stay or what you do at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Biloxi, you’ll leave with the same thought: Who needs Vegas, baby? For more information, visit hardrockbiloxi.com. PN

On Jan. 26 at the Variety Playhouse, Ray will be playing her honest, stripped-down melodies that will take you back to the bittersweet tunes that haunted the honkytonks of yesteryear. amy-ray.com
