POINTS OF VIEW Points North: The Sequel Filmmakers have trotted out remakes and sequels of countless motion pictures during our lifetime, but of course, there is simply no equal to “The Godfather: Part II,” which was released on Dec. 20, 1974, less than 33 months after “The Godfather.” Often, critics say that remakes and sequels rarely make the same kind of impact as the original, but in this day of advanced digital imagery and computer animation, certain scenes that have been reconfigured 30 years later can make a huge impact with the younger generation. Some filmgoers may not have even seen the original version, so the new or altered content doesn’t influence their opinions of the original film. For magazine publishers, we remake the original version of a publication every month. Searching for new, fresh and engaging content for readers can be a daunting task. Points North’s original formula, now 11 years after the first issue was published, in many ways, still works just fine. You are our critics and during the past 12 months, most of the reviews we’ve received about our editorial content have been extremely positive, yet we fully understand that the virtual age has pushed the envelope in terms of the content we provide and how we deliver it. Beginning with this issue, Points North’s interactive magazine will be available on the same day that the print version reaches our distributors. That means if you prefer reading our magazine on your desktop or laptop, you can do so easily. In the very near future, we will create applications for iPad, smart phones and the like, but we still believe in the power of print. For guys, it’s a bit difficult to take your laptop to your favorite, ahem, reading room. For ladies looking for a little leisure time, curling up by the fire or reading Points North by the pool can be a bit more cumbersome with a laptop or virtual reader. No matter how our content is delivered in the future, we trust that you will always provide us with both positive and negative critiques of the content we offer you on a monthly basis. Your feedback is vital and we’re available by phone (770-844-0969) or by e-mail (myturn@ptsnorth.com) whenever you’d like to share your opinions. In case you’re wondering, this sequel is Points North: Part 128.

Bypass your typical bubbly beverage and head for one with foam. It’s time to celebrate the Peach State’s progress with a glass of Invocation Belgian-style Golden Ale or Ode to Mercy Imperial Brown Ale! Georgia’s newest beer company, Wild Heaven Craft Beer, is an answer to craft beer-lovers’ wishes as our state significantly lags behind when it comes to counting breweries and brewpubs in neighboring North Carolina and Florida. The vision to fill the void comes compliments of Nick Purdy, founding publisher of award-winning Paste magazine, with deliciously drinkable recipes developed by brewmaster Eric Johnson of Athens’ acclaimed Trappeze Pub. According to Purdy, “Our goal is nothing less than to brew the finest beer in the South.” The high-end brewery just released new sophisticated beers brewed in European tradition to be available in bottles around Atlanta. Wondering where to find a pint for your palate? The brew is available at several metro Atlanta locations, including The Fred in Sandy Springs, Muss & Turner’s in Smyrna and Taco Mac locations in Dunwoody, Canton, Kennesaw and Buford. If your daughter or granddaughter loves horses, don’t miss this wonderful book for children between the ages of 7 and 12. And here’s the best part: It was written by a girl in the same age range who loves horses herself! Born and raised in Georgia, Sarah Voskamp wrote a book when she was 9 and at age 10 she officially became a published author who writes about having a dream become a reality, but with an outcome that wasn’t expected. In chasing their dreams, three horseback-riding best friends — Ellie, Felicity and Sandra — overcome tough challenges with pure determination as they follow their dreams and passions for horseback riding. In this delightful story, Ellie learns that not all dreams come true the way you expect them to, and all three girls learn what it takes to go after their dreams and then live with the outcome. Yet no matter what happens, they will be together, forever and always, chasing their dreams. The 90-page book titled “Filly Girls” was recently released by Boutique of Quality Books Publishing Company and will be available via www.boutiqueofqualitybooks.com as well as bigger booksellers such as Amazon.com and Barnesandnoble.com.

Four Young Sisters from Alpharetta Dazzle Audiences with an Eclectic Blend of Music that Transcends Traditional Genres [ W R I TTE N BY A M B E R L A N I E R N AG L E ]

Bluesy. Soulful. Organic. Ethereal. I sat in the von Grey’s basement studio and tried to place a label on the music as I listened to the eclectic melodies streaming from the voices and instruments of the four gifted musicians, but theirs is a sound that defies easy classification. During an afternoon jam session, these young sisters from Alpharetta played their music for me, demonstrating a mastery of multiple instruments and a broad, mature musical palette. Their distinctive sound surprises and delights — like a shooting star blazing across the starry darkness or a bold, colorful rainbow that stretches across the blue sky. In case you don’t know, von Grey — a band comprised of four sisters ranging in age from 10 to 15 years old — is on the rise. They’ve played gigs around Atlanta for months, dazzling audiences large and small with their talent and youthful exuberance. In August, they opened for Sarah McLachlan at Chastain Park, playing songs such as “Volcano” and “What’s Your Name” for a captivated crowd of music lovers. “Opening for Sarah was a rush!” remarked 13-year-old Fiona. “It was so surreal. After we finished our set and started walking offstage, the whole crowd stood up in an uproar of applause. We had a standing ovation!” The limelight experience — the taste of the big time — thrilled and energized the foursome. Not only did McLachlan extend her personal praise and encouragement to the young

women, but newly found fans scurried up to them asking for autographs. Von Grey even had their own dressing room stocked with candy and beverages that evening. While other teens’ and tweens’ lives revolve around hanging out at the mall and fast-finger texting, von Grey pours most of their energies into the pursuit of creating first-class musical experiences. They are not only thriving, classically trained musicians, they represent a new, contemporary breed of intelligent singer-songwriters bursting onto Atlanta’s indie music scene and beyond. But how did these four sisters arrive at this point so early in life? Stars Are Born “[Their father] and I enjoy music, and we’ve always taken our daughters to live performances,” noted Jill von Grey, mother of the four phenoms who also homeschools the girls and manages their band. “I feel that they are all musically gifted to some degree, but they have also put in a great deal of

time to develop their talents. There’s definitely magic, but I’m not sure what that magic is.” Jill stated that all of her daughters started classical music lessons before they were 5 years old. Fifteen-year-old Kathryn, the eldest sister, started with classical piano and added the cello a year later. “When I was 10, I began exploring beyond classical and moved on to bluegrass cello styles,” Kathryn said. “I picked up the mandolin along the way. I also began supplementing my classical piano instruction with some jazz instruction.” Then, at the ripe old age of 13, Kathryn migrated into pop-rock and learned to play the bass guitar. All the while, her younger sisters followed in her footsteps, learning to play not one, not two, but multiple instruments each. Fourteen-year-old Annika plays the violin/fiddle, rhythm guitar, ukulele, keyboards and banjo. Fiona prefers the guitar, although she is also fluent in violin, piano and banjo. Ten-year-old Petra, the youngest, plays piano, lap

steel guitar, viola and an odd but interesting instrument that would surprise most. “I can play the washboard,” Petra announced with her broad, contagious grin as a classic von Grey story unfolded. The sisters were trying to mimic a sound effect that they heard on a musical track and learned that the tinny sound they pursued emanated from a washboard, so Petra learned to stroke the metal ridges to produce a similar clattery sound. Due to their classical upbringing, the four have played chamber music together for years. Then, in 2008, the family traveled to India with their father, Michael, and observed locals playing classic Westernstyle rock music. The experience was a sort of catalyst, and when they returned to the States, they started von Grey. Although most parents would have balked at such an idea, Michael and Jill were supportive and encouraging. “Our parents teach us to reach high, give it all you can, and never be afraid of failure, but embrace the lessons it teaches,” Fiona said. “We feel immensely fortunate to have such supportive parents.” The girls exude unfathomable poise and discipline. They rise before the sunlight spills into the windows of their home, start their studies around 7 a.m., and push hard to finish school by 2 p.m. “And then we start practicing our music,”

Annika remarked. “Music is our passion. It’s something that all of us really love, and something that we can share between us and with other people.” Weekday afternoons are filled with music, along with two nights each week and an occasional Sunday afternoon. Beyond school and music rehearsals, the von Grey sisters enjoy being with friends, shopping, and the same kinds of activities that their teenaged contemporaries enjoy. Kathryn and Petra also list artistic creation among their favorite pastimes — painting, photography and drawing. Annika likes to hit the gym and work off stress. Fiona likes to travel and explore new places and sites around the city.

Music, Music, Music Their interests and influences span the musical spectrum contributing to what Annika refers to as “the band’s melting pot of genres.” They seem to listen to everything under the sun, mentioning a diverse array of artists such as The Beatles, Joss Stone, Sheryl Crow, Gavin DeGraw, Eminem, Kings of Leon, Sugarland and Carrie Underwood. “I listen to different things,” Kathryn noted. “I love Muse’s ‘Neutron Star Collision.’ It’s on my iPod, and I have listened to it a lot lately. I’m drawn to interesting melodies and chord progressions.” “I’m most interested in unique rhythms and complex drum beats,” Annika interjected, noting that she’s currently listening to Buffalo Springfield and can’t get enough of Led Zeppelin’s “Ramble On.” Together, the four sisters speak to one another in a musical language foreign to most of us. On any given day, music blares through the von Grey house with large doses of freefalling commentary. “Hey, listen to this bridge,” a voice calls out. A minute later, another voice is heard saying, “That’s a great chord progression.” In the studio, von Grey is comfortable — skinny jeans and bare feet. They produce a cultivated sound showcasing brilliant melodies complemented with soaring three- and four-part harmonies.

Vocals are soulful and spirited amid a backdrop of infectious, rolling rhythms. There is surprising depth in both their singing and songwriting. Von Grey’s songs are boldly emotional and possess a mature lyrical quality. “The music comes to us first — maybe a lick and then a melody,” Annika explained. “Then we write lyrics to match. It can be very therapeutic for us — to express ourselves — to voice our opinions and thoughts through song.” The girls admit that they stick to themes that they know like boys, breakups, relationships and teenaged soul searching. Although divorce hasn’t touched their family, the von Grey sisters have friends who are experiencing the heavy emotions of broken homes, so they wrote a song about the topic. Annika and Fiona sing the lead with sympathetic words, “Pretty little girl — let me dry your eyes.” Von Grey will soon record “With You I Can,” a song written by American Idol finalist Kimberly Caldwell. They are slowly and meticulously developing a portfolio that adequately represents the quality of music that they create and hope to have a full collection recorded by this spring. Von Grey Gives Back Aside from their musical inclinations, the four have the hearts and minds of seasoned philanthropists. Just days after last year’s torrential downpours filled the Cumberland River and pushed floodwaters through Nashville, von Grey wrote and recorded “Rise Up,” an inspirational song about strength and resilience. In May, von Grey posted the anthem on their Web site, inviting visitors to download the song in return for a donation to aid in relief efforts. They pledged to give all the proceeds from the song to the Nashville Red Cross. Then in the summer, the band traveled to Tennessee’s Music City to perform the song and hand-deliver their first check to the organization’s Board of Directors. The four young women are also collaborating with a local author to support a national literacy campaign and are continuing their support of Braille Without Borders, an international organization designed to help the blind living in developing countries to develop life-changing vocational skills. These vibrant virtuosos are at the forefront of creating an eclectic amalgam of country, pop and rock music. They are just warming-up for their grand arrival on center stage. Yes, we will be hearing a lot more from von Grey — of that, I am certain. Bravo! Bravo! Well, what do you know? It’s a Brew with a View! RUN THE PEACHTREE R OA D R AC E Yes, the Peachtree Road Race is the world’s largest 10K but for those of us who call metro Atlanta home, toeing the line

on the Fourth of July for this event is as much an Atlanta tradition as riding Priscilla the Pink Pig — only it’s signifi cantly warmer and takes a smidge longer to fi nish. The organizers of the Peachtree Road Race got smart and changed the start waves from being randomly assigned to performance-based. This helps runners and walkers alike, because a better distribution of participants eases the congestion common in popular races and essentially ensures those interested in walking the course aren’t caught up with a group of sprinters out to set a new personal record. Whether you walk or run, be sure to take part in this experience where the race is almost secondary to friendly people sporting patriotic costumes as they move through the streets of Atlanta and military planes with the American fl ag fl ying overhead as the National Anthem plays prior to the start of the race. However, golf is still king on the Northside, and a ma-

jor golf championship coming to Johns Creek for the first time in 10 years is reason enough to celebrate. The last time the event was held at Atlanta Athletic Club’s Highlands Course, David Toms made a stunning par on the 72nd hole to secure the Wannamaker Trophy by one shot over Phil Mickelson. As we reported in September, as many as four junior golfers (under the age of 17) may attend the PGA Championship on Aug. 8 – 14 with a paying adult, but there are other fabulous options for those golf enthusiasts who want more frills. That is, unless you can have dinner and a movie in one convenient, comfortable and cutting-edge location. Here’s how it works: Theaters open before showtime so moviegoers can peruse the menu and

Few annual events make us more giddy with anticipation than this mammoth craft festival, now celebrating its 43rd year. It’s the ultimate girl’s day out! The Yellow Daisy Festival at Stone Mountain Park on Sept. 8 – 11 draws multi-generations of grandmothers, mothers and daughters who revel in homemade crafts made from exquisite artisans from 38 states and two countries. Along with the 400 artists and crafters on display, there are daily live entertainment performances, children’s activities, clogging and crafter demonstrations along with some tasty corn dogs and turkey legs! From its humble origins as a small crafts festival, Yellow Daisy has bloomed into a major affair, and is consistently voted one of the top five arts and crafts show in the nation by Sunshine Artist magazine and is a Southeast Tourism Society Top 20 Event. The event itself is free, but there is a $10 vehicle fee to enter the park. But don’t worry, the festival hasn’t gotten too big for its britches, as Yellow Daisy still prides itself on its small-town feel. THE SEC FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME Since Dec. 1992, the Southeastern Conference has de-

cided its football champion on the field. The 20th anniversary of the SEC Football Championship will again be held at the Georgia Dome this year, pitting the winner of the SEC’s Eastern Division versus the winner of the SEC’s Western Division. The most thrilling SEC title game came in 1997, when Tennessee’s Peyton Manning hooked up with wide receiver Marcus Nash for a 73-yard touchdown pass with just 3:46 left on the clock. Jeff Hall’s subsequent PAT gave the Vols a 30-29 victory. Three years earlier, Florida’s Chris Doering grabbed a twoyard touchdown pass from Danny Wuerffel to give the Gators their second straight title over Alabama, 24-23. Judd Davis’ extra point provided the winning margin in the first SEC title game played in Atlanta after two years at Birmingham’s Legion Field. The SEC Football Championship, taking place this year on Dec. 3, is one of the most coveted tickets to any sporting event held in Atlanta, with an average attendance of 74,165 from 1994-2009. For the Residents at Jesse’s House, a Shelter for Adolescent Girls in North Georgia, the Designing Dreams $20,000 Room Makeover Helped Make This House Feel More Like a Home

ULTIMATE MAKEOVER [ W RI T T E N BY B RE H UMPHRIES ]

For

most of us, “home” is a place of warmth, safety and love. But for children with absent or abusive parents, home is not the haven it should be. Serving as a glimmer of hope for some of these children is Jesse’s House, an emergency and long-term shelter for adolescent girls in North Georgia who have been removed from their homes due to abuse, neglect or delinquency. “Quite frankly, most of our residents have nowhere else to go — nobody wants them, including those who are supposed to love and protect them the most,” wrote Adlen Robinson, Jesse’s House volunteer coordinator, in a letter she sent last year to Designing Dreams, an organization that awards a family in emotional or financial crisis a $20,000 room makeover from Allison Havill Todd Interiors with the belief that a beautiful room can be healing. “Some girls come to us with [only] the clothes on their backs. Imagine being removed from your home in the middle of the night. Most of our residents come to us frightened, lonely and heartbroken, wondering why this is happening to them,” she continued. 24

Points North | November 2011 | ptsnorth.com

Though the staff is extremely dedicated and works hard to make each girl feel at home, it’s often a tough transition. If a girl’s home life was violent or abusive, Jesse’s House may feel like a safe haven, but if the parents were absent and the girls are unaccustomed to accountability, this new place of discipline and structure may be an abrupt change, Robinson pointed out. It is immensely important for these children to feel at home during their residency. And though the organization has a great shelter that can accommodate up to 12 girls at a time in individual bedrooms, the space felt a bit industrial, particularly in the common areas like the family room. So when she got the call that Jesse’s House had been selected as the 2010 Designing Dreams recipient, Robinson was beside herself. “I figured that there are so many nonprofit organizations and people in need; I was shocked,” she said. “But we were so excited because, even though the family room is fine, it’s clean and it’s got sturdy furniture, it’s just sort of plain.” Though it understandably wasn’t on the list of necessary expenses for the Jesse’s

House board of directors, who work h a rd to manage the nonprofit’s funds to ensure all primary needs are met, Robinson knew a room makeover could work wonders for making PHOTO COURTESY OF ROB SMITH over the mood in the house. Luckily for them, Designing Dreams’ panel of impartial judges recognized this as well, and unanimously chose Jesse’s House from the list of last year’s nominees. These Four Walls Since 1998, Jesse’s House has collaborated with state agencies like the Department of Family and Children’s Services and the Department of Juvenile Justice to provide care for girls ages 7 through 17 until they can be reunited with their families, or until alternate permanent placement can be arranged. During their residency, all girls receive counseling, academic tutoring, medical and dental attention and instruction on life skills such as time management, basic cooking skills, proper hygiene, nutrition and physical fitness. “We want to empower [the girls],” Robinson said. “When they leave us, we want them to have a sense of higher self-esteem. We want them to know that they

26

are not throwaways, that they can be whatever they want to be. Despite their difficult circumstances at home, they can still be successful … we just work on nurturing the children while they’re in our care.” One way they nurture the girls is introducing structure. The residents work closely with staff members like Clinical Director Kristin Dhabliwala to create individualized service plans that help them make and meet goals. Each girl is responsible for chores around the house, and a level program with incentives is in place to reward them for increasing positive behaviors and limiting negative behaviors. And a primary focus at Jesse’s House is academics. “That’s a big area that most of them need extra help in when they come to us,” Robinson said. “We provide the one-on-one tutoring, we work with the schools, the school counselors … really whatever we have to do to help that child succeed in school.” Often, girls who come to Jesse’s House with no academic ambition have learned the value of education, and even gone on to college with goals and career aspirations they never had before. “That’s huge for them because suddenly they see how many doors education can open,” Dhabliwala said. “They start to see education as their way out, truly.” And in the long run, Jesse’s House has been successful in really healing these children. “I can remember several girls who, when they came to us, wouldn’t even look you in the eye. They didn’t laugh. They were not smiling because their hearts were hurting,” Robinson said. “And I’ve totally seen

transformations after a stable time with us, after months of consistent care, love and nurturing.â€? “I enjoy seeing [the girls] build integrity and self-discipline. I see that a lot ‌ they suddenly stop wanting to try to get away with things, and they start doing the right thing because it’s the right thing to do,â€? Dhabliwala added. “That gives me a lot of hope, because that tells me that even when they leave here, they’re still going to have that sense of self-discipline and willpower.â€? Making a House a Home Though the structure at Jesse’s House has been successful in nurturing its residents, the shelter itself needed a little TLC, so the family room and an adjacent meeting room were chosen for the Designing Dreams room makeover, which took place in two phases last November. First, all the furniture was cleared out so that new paint and ooring could go in. “The girls were so excited that they had a slumber party in the empty rooms,â€? Robinson said. “The anticipation was so great.â€? The following week, the Designing Dreams crew came in and completed the rest of the makeover while the girls were at school. “Our goal was to brighten it up, make it cheery,â€? said Allison Havill Todd, president of Allison Havill Todd Interiors in Cumming and founder of Designing Dreams. “Previously the [carpet, walls and furniture] were a dingy brown — very drab and depressing. I wanted to create a color palette that would be uplifting and happy, [so] I selected the spa blue on the walls for a fresh, calming feel and brighter oranges, yellows and spring greens for a fun, fresh look.â€? In the main area, Todd’s team used a “bullet-proofâ€? laminate hardwood, as she described it, and softened it up with a nice, shaggy area rug. When possible, they recycled items Jesse’s House had on hand,

Designing Dreams such as a few end tables, which were refinished with custom tops by Art Floors of Georgia. Inspirational messages like “If you can dream it, you can do it,” were scripted on the tabletops and walls. To liven the space even more, they installed wallpaper panels with bright patterns and butterflies to serve as artwork. And they added all new or gently used furniture. “We had to think about it differently because these rooms get a lot of heavy use,” Todd said. Instead of just considering aesthetics, they added practical elements, like washable slipcovers on chairs and a retractable table that can accommodate house meetings. All plans had been hidden from the residents and staff prior to installation, so the unveiling of the new rooms was monumental. “It was kind of like one of those Oprah shows … I started crying. of a slightly more adrenaline-pumping ride. The park is open 365 days a year so there’s nothing stopping you from grabbing the wheel and hitting the dirt, either at the reins of an ATV, motorcycle or two-seated side-by-side. Don’t have a helmet or the appropriate gear? Don’t worry. Moto Mountain is prepared for that, too, with gear and machines you can rent onsite. And you know, after a long day of revving your engine, the thought of idling might just come to mind. If that’s the case, perhaps you should decide to spend the night in one of the park’s sky cabins — think cabin on stilts — overlooking the North Georgia Mountains. After waking up to the beautiful view, you can always sneak in a round of golf or paintball before heading back home. Layering a cowhide rug over another rug is a popular trend in home design.

The garland is gone and the twinkling

lights of the holidays are put away until next year, and now your house looks depressingly bare. But you don’t have to struggle with those after-Christmas blues! Just put some good old-fashioned tender loving care into your abodes to celebrate a joyous new year. Before you do, read on for what’s hot (as well as what’s not) in Atlanta home design for 2011. Bye, Bye Beige The color forecast for 2011 is gray with a chance of Kelly green. “Gray is the new beige,” said Sharma Cohen, interior designer at ShowHouse Design Studios Inc. in Duluth. “From light gray to dark gray, and everything in between. Gray made a huge start in 2010 and I think it’s totally going to take over in 2011.” And as for that Kelly green? “It’s the new blue and brown,” Cohen said. Allison Havill Todd, president of Allison Havill Todd Interiors in Cumming, agrees. “Grays are hot, and they don’t have to be cold, they can have a warmer undertone,” she confirmed.

“Warmer grays can be paired with br ig hter ac cent colors, like chartreuse, hot pink or fresh lime green.” But, Todd advises, “You have to be careful about using too much gray or having the wrong undertones because it could create a cold feel to the room.” A great way to warm up gray is to focus on your accent color, from purples and bright blues, to crisp clean white. And perhaps even a dash of the seventies? Don’t worry, it’s not as bad as it sounds, according to Patti Drane, owner and principal of Interiors by Patti in Suwanee. “It’s going back to the seventies a bit, though not the avocado green or that yucky orange. and easy to maintain, has natural properties that are anti-allergenic, reduces noise and vibration in a room, and is comfortable and soft on your feet. Although, Todd advises, when looking at green products for your home, do your research. “There is a big gray area in the green area,â€? she advised, as companies can use the term loosely. Check to see if the products are certiďŹ ed “greenâ€? by an independent organization and research what makes it green. An easy way to be green is to buy locally to reduce the environmental affects of long distance shipping. “Furniture made in America means a smaller environmental footprint,â€? said Julie Dewald, Store Manager for Room & Board Home Furnishings in Atlanta. “As of late this year we are excited to say our furniture is 90-percent American made.â€? Fabulous Furniture & Awe-Inspiring Accents From wingback chairs and antiqued mirrored furniture to the resurgence of paisley patterns, people are intrigued with elements from the past that reinvent themselves with a fresh modern twist. “A lot of people like to use heirlooms from their families that are passed down, but where the contemporary comes in is that you mix that with the new styles,â€? White said. “We are also using a lot of aged mirrors, where you can’t see yourself but it does reect more light into your home. “Those intimidating interiors, ‘wave at the pretty room as

you walk by’ kind of room, I think is really being thrown by the wayside. We keep hearing the same requests from clients: warm, inviting and comfortable homes, those are three words I hear over and over again.

ALLISON HAVILL TODD | AHT Interiors

Todd loves the resurgence of the wingback chair, which now is available in all sorts of new styles, shapes, curves, fabrics and trim. “Taking that old-fashioned wingback chair and giving it a new spin, that’s hot!” she said. But don’t discount modern styles, which are making a big impact on interior design in 2011. “It looks like Atlanta is getting on to the whole modern vibe,” Cohen said. “People are really paring it down and simplifying design in regards to picking up more modern-style pieces. Modern can really be taken to many definitions, but the modern I’m speaking of is more minimal-style furniture, clean lines, a lot simpler.” One such modern trend is the use of acrylic furniture. “Acrylic is big, that’s another one of those modern materials that people are personalizing in their design. Especially acrylic side chairs and bar stools,” Cohen said. Todd agreed acrylic furniture is popular right now, and you don’t have to forsake a traditional style to use them either. “People think of [acrylic furniture] as being used only in contemporary or modern environments but now pieces are used in more traditional environments because it lightens up a space. Especially if you have a small room because it visually takes up less space.” Dewald added, “A great alternative to purchasing acrylic furniture is to use glass. Glass-top dining tables, accent tables and end tables can create clean straight lines for your space.”

Casually Elegant Or Comfortably Modern If a mood is a trend, then home interiors have gone back to the basics as homeowners look for cozy comfort in their designs. The year of the museum-like interiors is officially out, and casual, comfortable styles are in. “Those intimidating interiors, ‘wave at the pretty room as you walk by’ kind of room, I think is really being thrown by the wayside,” Todd said. “We keep hearing the same requests from clients: warm, inviting

and comfortable homes, those are three words I hear over and over again.” That casual elegance has even drifted into the most formal room of the house. “How many times do people not use their dining rooms because it feels too formal? If you make it casual but elegant,

you will use it more,” Drane said. Dining rooms have become eclectic playgrounds in design; no need to be matchy, matchy here. Have fun. Make the room look as though it was furnished over time, even if it wasn’t. “A lot of times what we are doing now is using two lanterns in the dining room instead of a big chandelier. That’s something that makes it a bit more casual,” White offered. “We’ll also put two high-back upholstered end chairs that are very comfortable, and then put either a comfortable bench or sofa on the side.” And for those surrounded by faux walls, it may be time for a fresh coat of paint. “Faux is history,” Cohen exclaimed. “People are getting rid of the faux walls in their kitchen; they really want a more minimal style.” Other designers make one caveat before dismissing faux paint from your homes. “Faux is great if used in limited quantities. If you want to use it in one room, that’s great but carrying it through the rest of the house is overdoing it,” Todd confirmed. “It hasn’t completely gone away, especially

for dressing up cabinets, mantles, columns or kitchen cabinets, especially considering you can get a completely new look without replacing it. But I think it got overdone for a while.” Now, it appears wallpapers are filling the void that faux painting is leaving behind. “Wallpaper is back,” Drane said. “Every room was faux finished for so many years, but now you are seeing textured wallpapers, metallic, foil wallpapers, clean geometric designs, linens and cotton textures.” While not for everyone, especially those who like a crisp look, slipcovers are becoming a popular choice for many of Todd’s clients, as it’s especially great for families, thanks to its ease of cleaning. And Todd points out it evokes a casual, comfortable mood and allowed a

Spirits, Stars and Ski Slopes Head to the Hills of Aspen for Perfect Powder and Perhaps a Chance to Encounter a Spirit, Star or Both [ W R I T T E N BY L I S S A P O I R OT ]

For

years I’ve heard tales of Aspen that came straight out of the pages of celebrity rag mags. Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell have a home there, which means Kate Hudson is a frequent visitor. Kevin Costner, Jack Nicholson, Michael Douglas, Don Johnson … the place is teeming with celebrities during the winter months, where Aspen Mountain is covered in both densely populated forests of white-barked trees of the same name and a thick coating of white powder. Aspen wasn’t always a collection of the rich and famous, but rather those seeking riches from its mountains. Silver miners created this historic town, where original buildings from the 1800s still stand, giving visitors a feeling they’ve stepped back in time, although instead of fur coats worn by trappers, they are worn by those aforementioned celebs. Yet, despite its collection of the rich and famous, this town is a welcoming destination for all who love being outdoors, especially in the winter, when

Aspen and its three neighboring mountains welcome hordes of snow lovers seeking its perfect powder and multitude of black diamond trails. Stepping Back in Time Aspen’s history as a late-1800s mining town is evident in the style of its brick-building lined streets. And perhaps one way to truly get a sample of the

town’s storied past is to spend the present at the Hotel Jerome. Although a newer wing is available, the original 1889 hotel has been a prominent local feature, and remains such after a recent renovation and expansion. Creating larger, more modern guest rooms and suites, Hotel Jerome now operates with fewer rooms than before it added its new wing. While the fabric-lined walls and incredibly comfy beds in the hotel’s 94 guest rooms are something to write home about, the hotel itself is famed for its “spirits.” Locals rub elbows with hotel guests at the J-Bar, where the signature drink is its milkshake, the Aspen Crud. Created during Prohibition, the bar was converted into a “soda shop” and was popular for its

46

shakes, featuring a healthy shot of illegal bourbon. The hotel library is a hodge-podge of oversized couches and chairs in nooks where couples can sneak away for a quiet night amongst the crowds that find the late-night hot spot’s magic shows (yes, magic shows) worth the walk in sub-zero temperatures. And if you’d like an extra dose of spirits with your stay, perhaps you’ll encounter one of the hotel’s ghosts, including a young boy who was rumored to have died in the hotel’s swimming pool decades ago and who appears soaking wet, leaving his wet footprints as a sign he’s been there. Some are so fascinated by the hotel’s haunted history the staff will happily provide a ghost tour at your request. Besides its Ghost Town history, Aspen has long been an artistic community. Shake off the snow and belly up to any one of Aspen’s basement taverns and you’re bound to encounter someone with a personal story about a famous resident, such as when they skied with John Denver, who called these Rocky Mountains home, or witnessed Hunter S. Thompson practicing his unique gonzo-style storytelling in the flesh. Aspen is also a music-loving town, and the area hosts a number

of music festivals and events, including the Jazz Aspen Snowmass music festival, and Snowmass’s annual Mardi Gras parade and party. (Again, yes, Mardi Gras.) The tradition began decades ago when residents of New Orleans looking to escape the crowds descending upon them took the show to the snow-capped mountains, and now, revelers come from far and wide. Outdoor Pursuits Aspen is serious ski country and is cleverly promoted as the “Power of Four,” which includes Aspen, Snowmass, Buttermilk and Aspen Highlands. A free shuttle connects each, with about 20 minutes between its Aspen and Snowmass stops. Beginners would best turn to Snowmass for green and blue trails and leave the true Aspen slopes to the experienced skiers and boarders — the mountain doesn’t offer a single green trail for beginners, although it does feature a fantastic ski school to make you fall in love with its slopes. Beginners may also prefer Buttermilk for its green and blue trails, while the locals seeking to get away from the crowds prefer Aspen Highlands. Head there for quieter runs and to befriend resident skiers. Snowmass is filled with kids, and a favorite stomping ground for families is a visit to The Sweet Life for S’mores around the outdoor fi re pit, as well as oversized ice cream cones. (Yes, ice cream. The lack of humidity in the Rockies paired with the sun’s reflection on the snow makes 30-degree temps feel more like 60 degrees.) During my visit last winter, the Winter X Games had just left Buttermilk, leaving behind its collection of boarding runs. The games will return this winter for the last time, providing more spectator fun during the event, and special leftover trail additions to enjoy after the event. Although Aspen once reigned supreme in its luxury accommodations, including its four-star resort located at its base, the St. Regis, and the Ritz-Carlton found at

Combined, Aspen and Snowmass provide trails for all levels as well as ski schools, and a children’s program at Snowmass keeps tots entertained while mom and dad hit the slopes. Aspen’s slopes are visible from the intimate town streets, beckoning its residents and visitors to hop on a lift and reach its summit; however, the area also offers other outdoor endeavors for those who want to play in the snow. Snowmobiling through the mountain passes, snowshoeing, dog sled rides, ice-skating and sledding are offered to all ages. Aspen itself is a town and not just a slope-side village, so it is here where hunters of the shopping sort may not find bargains along its snowlined streets, but will enjoy scouting its boutiques and antique stores for costly baubles, fashions and trinkets.

Get Away to Blue Ridge this Winter

O

On those rare occasions of snow in Georgia’s forecast, I’m always glued to the weather reports on TV, staring intently at the map of our great state as the meteorologist indicates the areas that will receive the most precipitation. Inevitably, I always end up yearning for the North Georgia mountains; while metro Atlanta receives mere flurries, our neighbors to the North are the ones enjoying a winter wonderland. Snow or no snow, there’s just something about cozying up by a fire at a cabin in the mountains that brings peace in the wintertime, particularly in Blue Ridge, Ga., where there is no shortage of cabin rentals available to accommodate any size group, from a couple seeking a romantic retreat to a group of girlfriends gathering for a little R&R. Depending on what you desire, the options are endless — many homes feature those aforementioned fireplaces or even hot tubs to warm you up, some include high tech amenities like wireless internet or game rooms and still others sit on prime property along rivers, creeks or peaks with picturesque mountain views. Personally, I could hole up for an entire weekend in the comfort of a cabin, but opportunities for winter fun abound for those prone to cabin fever. Shoppers flock to Downtown Blue Ridge for an array of arts and antiques, and when hunger strikes, several sophisticated restaurants are worthy of recommendation. (Check out Toccoa Riverside restaurant for fresh mountain trout in a serene natural setting, or visit Cucina Rustica on the outskirts of town for fabulous Northern Italian fare.) Nature-lovers can hope for a glimpse at native wildlife like turkeys and deer during hikes or scenic drives, and avid fishermen can cast a line in the Toccoa River. Wile away the day at one of the area’s spas to start the New Year with a soothing massage, or pay a visit to Mercier Orchards for hot apple cider and a slice of pie. The opportunities are endless, and Blue Ridge’s Web site offers a wealth of information, such as their list of “Top 10 Winter Experiences,” suggested itineraries and maps for self-guided tours of the area.

Breakfast in Style Love at First Taste at Sugar Cakes Patisserie [ WRI TTEN BY L I ND S EY BARTEL L ]

Ah France you still know

, how to find your way to my heart! Chewing the first bites of warm baguettes (especially the chocolate chip ones), flaky pastries and fanciful desserts pulled me under France’s amorous spell quickly during last summer’s vacation in Europe. My French host wisely informed me that the first hours of morning were the best time to pick out the freshest pastries and advised me to always leave a patisserie with a sweet little box of treats for dessert. So every morning I breathed in deeply the heavenly aromas from hundreds of tiny patisseries and boulangeries sandwiched a few feet from each other to awaken my groggy senses from sleep. Alas, patisseries are not found around every corner in America to awaken us gently in the morning, but if there is one nearby, don’t hesitate to say oui and go. To my joy, Sugar Cakes Patisserie, a French-inspired bakery, is only a 15-minute drive from my home, and I was prepared to be the early bird to ensure freshness. Opened since 2006, Sugar Cakes is tucked away in the charming historic square of Marietta, and its sunny interior resembles a freshly scrubbed orange with sleek lines that create a casual, modern feel for families to enjoy brunch together. Cracking open their breakfast menu (served until noon), I found that the options did not disappoint, as the entrées are French-inspired with a strong Southern influence. For a savory entrée, the breakfast crêpe is lovely, packing plenty of heartiness and flavor. The crêpe

dish arrived, looking like a delicate version of a burrito, stuffed with soft scrambled eggs, topped with a creamy mushroom sauce and served with a buttery croissant on the side to soak up every ounce of sauce. Another highlight worth mentioning is the bacon, which is perfectly mastered in crispiness. Now, the true star of the menu is luxuriously decadent and sweet, a perfect complement to strong coffee. The Crème Brulee French Toast is Sugar Cakes’ signature dish, with its texture resembling every quality of a classic crème brulee: creamy and custardy. Two pieces of white bread are dipped in Tahitian vanilla crème and pan-fried to give it a crisp layer on the surface, leaving the insides soft. If the dish doesn’t quite hit the sweet spot strongly enough for you, then wander over to the treats on display and select the Spoon Vanilla Crème Brulee or one of their many other edible works of art, including éclairs, scones and Danishes. After all, the almost

{ Tasting Notes } Ring in the New Year right with a new flavored rum from Bacardi; Rock Coconut is a blend of two new flavors, a combination of coconut water and rock melon, which is a fruit indigenous to India and Africa. The distinct combination of sweet and highly refreshing coconut water paired with the crisp and exotic taste of rock melon creates a dynamic spirit, with a rich aroma and authentic taste. Rock Coconut, now widely available in the Atlanta area, follows the recent successful launches of two other Bacardi flavored rums, Dragon Berry and Torched Cherry. Enjoy two cocktails using the new flavor. Try either a Bacardi Rock Coconut with pineapple juice or the Petit Fours at Creations Bakery Bacardi Rocket, made with Coke.

But don’t stop there. You can add a “heap” more such as veggies, bacon, sausage, chicken, turkey or ham. Locations: Five Atlanta-Area Locations For More Information: www.thumbsupdiner.com The news had wafted up to my ears in Alpharetta that Thumb’s Up Diner served up a breakfast not-to-be-missed for Atlantans, but with locations in downtown, East Point and Decatur it would be too much of a haul for me to check out, especially considering I’m allergic to mornings. So, I was thrilled when a Thumb’s Up Diner, whose restaurant motto is, “All food is cooked to order … so relax. It’s just eggs,” opened in Roswell on Alpharetta Street last September. Unique offerings include homemade multigrain biscuits, homemade peach, blackberry and strawberry jam (available flavors vary by the day), buckwheat waffles and pancakes, stone ground grits, house-smoked turkey, chicken and pork, and never ending pots of 100-percent organic, Arabica Nicaraguan coffee. Most entrées come with a choice of toast or biscuits, which I personally recommend — they’re fluff y instead of flaky, and light enough to keep you from feeling guilty about the carbs. Now the aforementioned “Heap” will aptly satisfy the most rumbling appetite, but two other crowd pleasers are the Greek Scramble (three eggs scrambled with onions, black olives, spinach, tomatoes and feta cheese) and the Yukon Omelet (smoked salmon, fresh spinach and cream cheese). Planning a visit? The restaurant is as busy as a honeybee for the early breakfast rush so you may want to sleep in a bit to enjoy a more relaxed meal. Thumb’s Up Diner has new hours effective on Jan. 31: Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. – 3 p.m. and Saturday through Sunday, 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. Also, please note, locations are either cash only, or give a discount for cash payment, so it’s best to bring some green. Show up empty-handed? There is an ATM on the premises for the cash strapped. —Julie Hostetter

Dutch Monkey Doughnuts What to Order First: The specialty doughnut menu changes daily, but “The Standards” include the popular Caramel Apple Fritter and the Buttered Maple Bacon, a sphere of dough wrapped with applewoodsmoked bacon and drizzled with pure, buttery maple syrup. Location: 3075 Ronald Reagan Blvd., Cumming For more information: www.dutchmonkeydoughnuts.com I’m usually not big on breakfast. Give me a cup of coffee and a doughnut, and I’m good to go. But not just any doughnut will do. It’s got to be a Dutch Monkey Doughnut, or it just doesn’t count. At this boutique doughnut shop, Pastry Chef Arpana Satyu and Chef Martin Burge whip up creative confections that look more like edible works of art. The fanciful counter where you make your selection doubles as eye candy, stocked with such homemade treats as grape iced, lemon meringue, peanut butter Bismarcks, and more with a menu that changes daily. The brightly colored shop is on my way to work, which is both delightful and a bit dangerous, and I’ve sampled quite a few (in the name of research, of course). Favorites include sweet corn cake with homemade honey butter, tiramisu cake, and the signature Dutch Monkey, filled with dulce de leche custard and topped with fresh banana slices and rich chocolate glaze. Support Local Art. Historic Norcross is known for more than its history, antebellum homes and charming restaurants; it also has a fantastic arts scene, and its local filmmakers are especially talented. On Jan. 22 from 7 to 9:30 p.m., the Norcross Arts Alliance presents a free Filmmakers’ Showcase featuring several local filmmakers’ work in the Norcross Cultural Arts & Community Center. Afterwards, you’ll even have the chance to interact with the men and women behind the movies! For more information, please visit www.aplacetoimagine.com or www.norcrossartsalliance.org. Discover Life in Black & White. Ansel Adams captivated the world his entire career with breathtaking black and white images of landscapes in the American West. To showcase his work, the Booth Western Art Museum in Cartersville is hosting “Ansel Adams: The Legacy,” the museum’s largest temporary exhibition to date. Visitors can view some of Adams’ most famous photographs — and some rarities — now through Feb. 20. For more information, please call 770-387-1300 or visit www.boothmuseum.org.
