Celebrate
I’ve recently wrapped up
a phase in my life in which wedding festivities consumed a majority of my weekends. First, there was my own wedding in September 2009, and then the weddings of my sister and several close friends in the months and years that followed, filling my calendar with bridal showers, luncheons, bachelorette parties, rehearsal dinners and, of course, the big days themselves. After my most recent wedding in July of this year, I realized I didn’t have any more on the horizon. And I felt a little lost. What would I do without showers to host, dresses to marvel over and cakes to taste? Luckily for you, Northside brides, I’m channeling all that wedding planning energy into the publication of this special edition, presented by Points North Atlanta
to serve as the exclusive resource for brides in Atlanta’s northern suburbs. Twice a year — once in the fall/winter seasons and again in spring/summer — you can count on us for wedding planning tips, the latest bridal styles, vendor recommendations, inspiration pages, honeymoon destinations and more. And it’s not all about weddings. In the pages that follow, you’ll find ideas for every occasion, including kids’ birthday parties (Party Planner, page 6) and anniversary receptions (A Silver Anniversary Celebration, page 31). Because we’re always looking for a reason to celebrate.

“I’LL TAKE CHLOE FOR AUG. 12, PLEASE! Oh, and throw her twin Claudia in as well, the navy will look great at the reception.” These are just a few expressions you may hear uttered from the mouths of Crush Vintage Rentals customers. Not quite the request most would imagine, but owner Tracy Jarvis expects nothing less. Who is Chloe, you ask? Better yet — what is Chloe? Chloe, in fact, is not a human, but a reupholstered, tufted armchair. Her twin, Claudia, is the matching piece — used often as a pair in lounge areas at events. Hoping to add a bit of personality to her collection, Jarvis decided to name her vintage and modern-chic furniture and décor rentals, only adding to the innovative flair of her new business. The furniture names are just one of the fresh touches that entice Crush customers. Jarvis had always loved the bridal industry, had seen other companies refurbish furniture pieces, but she never quite knew how to get her foot through the door.

“My curiosity was struck,” Jarvis claimed. “Where do they get this stuff?” After completing extensive research, Jarvis found that there were very few companies renting vintage décor in the Atlanta area. She came across pieces at flea markets, garage sales and auctions, refurbished them and added her own special touch. The company, an idea from her mother who encouraged Jarvis to open her own business, has flourished since its opening earlier this year. She has already booked more than 46 weddings and events, and offers a personal touch to each one, working closely with wedding planners and brides to bring their visions to fruition. MACARON MADNESS It’s hard to say when the macaron madness began. We think it was Marie Antoinette who famously said “Let them eat macarons!” at her wedding… or maybe not. Either way, these little puffs of joy have fled France and are taking American sweet shops by storm. The cute cookie sandwiches made of meringue and almond powder come in so many colors and flavors, it’s no wonder they’ve become a favorite wedding favor. Lucky for us, there’s a macaron monarch peddling her pastries all over the Atlanta area. She calls herself the Macaron Queen and she earned her title studying baking in Paris. The Macaron Queen’s menu includes all kinds of French desserts but the ultra-vibrant, super-portable macaron reigns over the rest as wedding favor royalty. And since it’s available in dozens of variations such as rose water, lavender, pomegranate and peanut butter, finding the favor that fits just right is easy. Good news for Northside brides: locations in Dunwoody and Apharetta are coming soon. macaronqueen.com
SWEET & SPICY SIMPLY SOUTHERN Handcrafted in Savannah with Atlantic sea salt and essential oils and lightly scented with iconic Georgia botanicals like magnolia, peach and pecan, Salacia Salts are perfect for a beach wedding or Southern celebration. The pampering products are natural, vegan and free from sulfates, colorants and artificial preservatives. Plus, Salacia packages them with the environment in mind, using reclaimed wine bottles and 100-percent post-consumer recycled plastic tubs. To make it truly personal, Salacia Salts will create custom labels for use on any of their products. You’ll have the opportunity to include up to three lines of text on the product labels, enough for a whole-hearted thank you note or simply names and dates. Mix and match quantities, scents and sizes to make your guests a memorable home spa indulgence package. After an intense bout of reception dancing, there’s no doubt they’d appreciate a soothing salt soak. salaciasalts.com
Denise LaFrenier, the Renaissance woman behind Alpharetta confectioner Candivore Èpice, combines two of the food world’s most tantalizing treats: candies and spices. A visit to her online shop will surely have you feeling like a grown up, sophisticated version of the proverbial kid in the candy store. Because in this candy store, subtle flavors reveal sugary sophistication. A custom order of her homemade, all natural caramels and brittles makes for the sweetest wedding favor imaginable. Individually wrapped red raspberry caramels are romantic and you can never go wrong with gourmet vanilla. What we’re really dying to try, though, are the root beer float caramels, a sure-fire favor choice for a vintage-inspired ceremony. Being the benevolent caramel queen she is, Denise donates a portion of her sales to bone cancer research. Eating candy for a cause? We can do that. etsy.com/shop/candivoreepice

Dietary concerns for your smashing celebration? Leave the birthday party baking to Roswell’s Gluten-Free Cutie, a 100-percent gluten-free bakery with dye-free, egg-free, soy-free, peanut-free and dairy-free options as well. Options include smash cakes, “cutie cakes,” cake pops and cupcakes in flavors like Build Me Up Buttercup and Strawberrylicious. glutenfreecutie.com
UNCLE MADDIO’S BIRTHDAY PARTIES Looking for the perfect party for the little aspiring chef in your family? Uncle Maddio’s is a fun place to do just that. Each party-goer gets to spread pizza sauce on an individual-sized slab of dough that comes pre-wrapped and ready to go in the oven. But first ... your little chef and all those chefs-in-the-making get to dive into various bins for toppings: pepperoni, cheese, sausage, peppers, you name it. Besides being fun for them, the ingredients — many of which are organic and fresh off a local farm — are good for them. Gluten-free dough is available too. While the pizzas are cooking, Uncle Maddio’s also often has face painters and other party options available. Otherwise, crafty moms can provide paper toques and mini canvas aprons for the kids to decorate with fabric markers. That way, the favors are done about the same time as the pizza. unclemaddios.com

SMASHING CELEBRATIONS Letting your little one play in the cake at her first birthday party is a timehonored tradition … but have you considered staging the custom to capture the memory on film? Many photographers across the Northside are now offering smash cake sessions to photograph the messy moments before the big event. This gives parents the ability to use the cute, cake-filled photos as décor or favors at the party, said Woodstock-based photographer Angie Ray, who coordinates balloon colors to match mom’s cake of choice. Some photographers, like Linda Scott of Acworth-based Clear Creek Images, even provide the cake.

LOV E STO RY: The Campbells met at Camp Lejeune military base in Jacksonville, N.C. Gary, a young Marine at the time, and Sheryll, a college student, realized they had a lot in common and decided to exchange phone numbers. Before Gary got deployed to Japan, he wanted to get married, but Sheryll’s mother insisted she finish school first. After Gary returned to the States, they got married in Vegas at the famous Little White Chapel.
LOV E STO RY: The Edmonds met in high school and dated on and off for four years before getting married in a small Decatur church in 1978. There was no elaborate meal, DJ or dancing at their reception, but it was one of the happiest days of their lives. Unfortunately, a conflict with Allan’s school required the couple to cancel their honeymoon to the Virgin Islands, but a good friend loaned his convertible ’vette and they drove to Hilton Head instead.
L O V E S T O R Y : Amanda spotted George in the crowd one day at the Atlanta Steeplechase. He was tan, in great shape and standing next to some people she knew. She got his number from a mutual contact, and called him up and invited him to go to a party with her. Even though George had no idea who she was, he agreed. After one picnic date in April 1978, they knew they were in love and were married soon after in August.
SECRET TO SUCCE SS: “Stay connected — keep the line of communication open, be true and trustworthy to each other and don’t take each other for granted. Spice up your life with new adventures and travel, but most importantly, love one another.” —Sheryll
SECRET TO SUCCE SS: “Remember to laugh with each other … Marriage is not always a bed of roses. It will have its ups and downs and those times have to be expected, but as long as you can laugh together, it makes those bumps in the road a lot smoother.” — Joan

A small reception followed at Ann’s home for family and neighbors. The Wagners have six children, 18 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. What’s your favorite kind of pie?
Are you a light, fluffy and fruity lemon meringue person? Or do you get down with rich and decadent chocolatey peanut butter? Maybe you go for the classics — warm cherry, gooey apple or a holiday-inspired pecan?

There’s no way you’re not drooling. And for those that will admit to it, you’re in luck. The classic confection is making its comeback — in a really big (and small, and tasty and savory) way. From downtown Roswell to Buford and back, pie-peddlers are putting their creative spin on the dessert, bringing it to life amidst wedding day décor as an alternative to the classic cake or even a Southern spin on your cocktail hour hors d’oeuvres. They make them in a million different shapes and sizes, and theme them up to match the style of your big day or your preferred tastes — pun very much intended.
CRAVE PIE STUDIO Duluth, cravepie.com BRIANA CARSON, THE OWNER and artisan pie baker at Duluth’s Crave Pie Studio said, “Pie is an important part of our American culinary heritage. It’s a classic comfort food, too. For many people, it conjures up fond memories of a favorite family recipe or holiday times. It just makes people feel good.” I really can’t sum up a wedding day intention better than that. Warm sentiments and good feelings are pretty much their own magic recipe for a successful knot-tying ceremony. The fact that there’s a dessert out there to amplify it? Score. Crave Pie Studio specializes in making individual sized pies, which means no one misses out on their favorite part of the pie (the crust, the filling, the whole package). The mini pies make for a decisive display, an indulgent gift, or for those of us that just can’t control ourselves, an automatic portion control factor. “Pie is a popular option now for couples who are looking for something unique, delicious and affordable,” Carson said. In fact, many grooms choose pie these days in lieu of the traditional groom’s cake. The fact that these guys can customize and create flavors to match a theme or season means less room for your standard golf-bag shaped cake.
BUTTERMILK PIE COMPANY Gainesville, facebook.com/buttermilkpie “I’VE ALWAYS LOVED COOKING and baking,” said Amanda Wilbanks, founder and CEO of the drool-worthy Buttermilk Pie Company in Gainesville. “Many of the memories I cherish most from childhood were made in the kitchen. Everyone joked that I learned to cook because I didn’t like setting the table. What can I say? I preferred the fun work — the cooking.” And that’s where her love for dough began … until it burst into an entirely different kind of flame PREVIOUS SPREAD: PHOTO COURTESY OF HALEY SHEFFIELD AND KATHRYN NEE; THIS PAGE: PHOTO COURTESY OF SIFT! “Pie is the new cake.”

the day she learned to make an all-butter homemade pie dough. “I started hand rolling pie dough and making my mother-in-law’s buttermilk pie recipe ... I couldn’t stop making them.” Or eating them — after she consumed a healthy (or maybe not so healthy) amount of sugar rounds, her husband said stop baking, or start selling … and thus, her business began. And just in time. As Wilbanks said, “Pie is the new cake.” She adds that choosing pies for the big day
often winds up being less expensive and offering a wider variety for guests with varied tastes. “It also creates a more family-style dessert approach,” she added. “That is great for Southern-style weddings since they are such a warm and inviting dessert. What better way to strike up a conversation with wedding guests than over a sweet slice of buttery, flaky pie?” Her one caveat? “Once you taste a homemade pie dough, you can never consume a store bought pie dough again,” she said.
SIFT! DESSERT BOUTIQUE Buckhead, siftatlanta.com WE ASKED TRISTEN BERRY, owner and pie-maker at Sift Dessert Boutique, why she chooses to make pies. She said, “Because the possibilities are endless!” And she wastes no missed opportunity to bring new, fresh and even sometimes surprising ideas to life inside every dish. A PIELOVING BRIDE Newlywed Annalise Peters Lisson chose pie for her big day last July in Atlanta. “It’s my husband’s favorite dessert in the world,â€? she said. “So we wanted to do that instead of a groom’s cake.â€? Their wedding cake itself had so many avors that the pies were a nice change of palatial scenery. Plus, their elegant, make-your-eyes-pop dessert table display was the showstopper of the evening, so a variety of pies was a must. Their baker, who also made their wedding cake, incorporated dummy pies into the display, and served the crowd from the real thing behind the scenes.

THAT PIE PLACE Sandy Springs, thatpieplaceusa.com MAYBE YOU SAW THESE GUYS on Scoutmob’s Local Finds as a new Atlanta hotspot, putting your favorite dishes into pie form? Or maybe you’ve driven past its cozy little kitchen in Sandy Springs and wondered why the heck a pie shop was so crowded for lunch? The bottom line — stop asking questions and just take a bite. In fact, the idea for That Pie Place was the result of that kind of thinking. That and one other question: Does Atlanta really need another burger joint, pizza joint, chicken ... well, you get the idea. Ron Wolf, owner and creative force behind the new pie shop, makes a case that “pie” is the granddaddy of all comfort foods across the globe. “Everybody loves pie,” he said. “And really, there are no other pie makers quite like us. We bake each pie to order. We don’t do whole pies, only personal, single-serving pies.”
“Pie can be a rather eclectic choice for weddings. It’s often unexpected, yet welcome.” TRISTEN BERRY | Sift! Dessert Boutique
Crave Pie Studio’s Chocolate Cream Pie
“I love options. I like that the same flavor pie can have a rustic appearance as well as an elegant one. And it’s universal. You won’t find many cultures that do not share an affinity for pie of some sort.” The desserts from the Sift kitchen tend to have surprise elements. That means there’s a little heat in her pecan pie, a special texture in her apple pies and an impossible aesthetic to her signature, Appalonia. As a fan of Sift myself, I can say she makes each one stand alone and stand out. Way out. So, it was only natural that Berry took her surprise elements to the wedding scene. “Pie can be a rather eclectic choice for weddings,” she said. “It’s often unexpected, yet welcome.” In fact, she’s got several weddings on the calendar this season where she can treat guests to up to seven different flavors, keeping costs down. This got her spilling. “Just think, the smoothness of key lime chocolate pie, the gooeyness of pecan pie, and the crunch of my
Another reason they aren’t quite like anyone else? Well, for one, their specialties include less fruit and more sauce — like buffalo sauce, or hot and tangy barbecue sauce. And, they come hand-held, like the hot-pocket of pie shops. And the coolest spin? All the praise for pie’s uniqueness works the same way when it comes to cocktail hour or dinner. Surprise guests with a flaky crusted chicken cordon bleu pie, instead of the standard toothpick light bite. “People’s tastes differ,” Wolf said. “Our personal pies are all different. The host could order a variety of pies, even customize our pies, to suit a variety of tastes. Just about anything you could imagine in a pie, we could make.” Just imagine the things you could bite into tucked inside a hot and flaky pie — pocket or pan. In a word? Yum. I know you’re definitely drooling by now. NB PHOTO COURTESY OF KATHRYN NEE

LOUISVILLE CHUGGER 3 ounces Wathen’s Kentucky Bourbon 6 ounces fresh watermelon juice 1/2 ounce simple syrup 10 – 14 mint leaves 2 dashes of Fee Brothers black walnut bitters In a shaker, muddle watermelon chunks, mint and simple syrup. Add bourbon and bitters, and shake vigorously. Strain into an ice-filled mason jar. Garnish with a fresh mint sprig.
“
Marriage is about compromise and I believe The Louisville Chugger reflects that. The Groom (and groomsmen) get their whiskey while the Bride gets an elegant looking drink that is more enjoyable to look at than shot glasses.” — Kevin McKinney, head mixologist, The Mill Kitchen & Bar, Roswell

A BOUQUET O F B R E WS More into craft beers than custom cocktails? Eddie Holley of Ale Yeah! in Roswell and Decatur shares a few of his favorites. In his own words, here are three brews that are perfect for any celebration.
B R O U W E R I J B O S T E E L S “ D E U S” — $ 2 7. 9 9/ 7 5 0 M L A true “Biere de Champagne/Bier Brut,” this crossover beer is perfect for toasting guests at a wedding party. DeuS is highly carbonated, giving you the impression of Champagne with all the wonderful qualities of beer. The beer has gone through the time-honored process of degorgement, or "methode de champenoise," during which the yeast is removed from the finished product, giving a crystal-clear, delicate finish of crisp fruits such as pears, lemon and apple. Available year-round, DeuS will surely leave lasting wedding memories — although at 11.5 percent ABV, said memories might be a little fuzzy.
BRASSERIE DUBUISSON FRERES SPRL “BUSH P R E S T I G E ” — $ 4 0. 9 9/ 7 5 0 M L This beer is more commonly known as “Scaldis Prestige.” It is a Belgian Strong Pale Ale with an additional step of fermentation that takes this beer to the almost-mythical level of 13 percent ABV. At once, the nose is tickled with strong vinous notes of vanilla, whiskey and brandy while the dark fruits of figs, apricots and raisins finish the palate off. Open this beer and allow it to warm.
G U E U Z E R I E T I LQ U I N "OUDE GUEUZE TILQUIN A L'A N C I E N N E "— $1 8 .7 9/ 7 5 0 M L A perfectly blended beer of 1, 2 and 3-year lambic beers featuring the worts of some of the world's finest lambic producers: Boon, Girardin, Lindemans and most importantly, Cantillon. Perhaps the most adventurous for our groom-to-be, gueuze (lambics) ales use wild yeast strains and open fermentation tanks to produce funky, acidic and sour combinations. This certainly checks all of these columns, while being just sweet enough to be enjoyed by a majority of palates. Lambics usually produce a lower ABV; this one is 6 percent.
