have been staring deep into the eyes of Santa himself the first time my daughter touched a Fraser fir — the look on her face was pure wonder. That same year, my son, slightly older and a seasoned shopper at Christmas tree farms by then, was big enough to carry the measuring stick through rows of trees as far as we could see. Seven years later, those fleeting moments are still a few of my favorite things, and what started as a fun activity has become a family tradition. Until they get older and think these outings are more embarrassing than exciting, I’m holding fast to our holiday adventures. The hard part, I’ve learned, is not getting lost in copious lists along the way. In the spirit of less stress is more fun, we’re trading action-packed to-do’s for sanity saving go-to’s, so, even if fi nding time to slow down this season wasn’t initially on your wish list, you still have time to add it. After all, nothing compares to the gift of being present.

BRANZINO One pound of branzino should serve four or ask for four filets Italians on the coast eat lots of seafood during the holidays. This roasted branzino recipe is rustic and bursting with fresh flavor, as well as a unique addition to your feast. Roasting fish whole makes for a juicer, moister fish and is worth the effort! We serve ours simply with olive oil, lemon juice, roasted fennel and capers. 1 pound branzino filets 1 teaspoon oil (per side of filet) Salt and pepper to taste

TIPS Get a “deboned” turkey, wrap the turkey around the stuffing and tie it with butcher’s twine. Without the bones, you get the same great flavor, but it cooks in half the time.

VINAIGRETTE: 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil 2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice

SERVING SUGGESTION: Roasted fennel Capers For this recipe, you will need to take a trip to Dekalb Farmer’s Market for some fresh branzino. Ask the fishmonger to scale, gut and de-fin the fish for you. To make filleting easier after cooking, insert a knife at both sides of the spine and lightly cut just under the skin from head to tail. Dry the skin well with a paper towel to prevent sticking before rubbing a little olive oil on the fish and seasoning liberally with salt and pepper. Place the fish on a hot, clean grill that has been oiled. When the fish releases and lifts off easily, flip with tongs and cook the other side in a new clean spot on the grill. When it lifts easily, transfer to a baking pan and finish in a 400-degree oven. To check for doneness, the spine bones should give and pull out easily between the incision along the spine. The meat should be white and not translucent. To fillet, use a large knife between the rib bones and the filet to lift the first filet off and remove the rib bones with tweezers. Lift the spine off the bottom filet and remove the rib bones and any remaining bones. Dress with lemon juice and extra virgin olive oil.

Executive Chef Brian Kennington at Red Sky Tapas

“To better manage my time, I remember a phrase my stepfather told me, ‘Always foresee the outcome before you begin a project.’ I start with the time I’d like to serve, and create a timeline working backward to determine what needs to go in the oven when, based on the time needed for each item’s recipe. Having a schedule like that keeps you on track and ultimately saves time. ” “Also, do your beginning prep like peeling potatoes or cutting carrots the day before. It’s easier to execute recipes when the ingredients are ready and available.” Executive Chef Ted Lahey of Osteria Mattone

The Real Fix

PHOTO COURTESY OF REAL FIX PIZZERIA

It may take you 30 minutes to find a parking spot on Canton Street during the lunch rush, but then again, you may get lucky. Especially when you consider tasting mozzarella that was made fresh 30 minutes ago, the pros might outweigh the cons. At the new Real Fix Pizzeria in Roswell, the list of pros is as long as their menu. Within the brightly painted brick building, indulge in their creative combinations of “forked, folded and fried” Neapolitan-style pizza, authentically handcrafted by piazzolo Giacomo Lazzano. Although the Palermo native only speaks Italian, his language of pizza translates well to the Roswell neighborhood. The vibe is vibrant, casual and kid-friendly, but their pizza is the real deal. UNTAMEABLE:

A REASON TO RUN AGAIN ANDREW POWELL ON THE RACE THAT CHANGED HIS LIFE { WRITTE N BY AME L I A PAVL I K }

April 11, 2014 started out

like any other

pre-race day for Andrew Powell. Powell, known as “AP” to his running buddies, and his brother-in-law, Frank Guinn, made the trip from Marietta to New Orleans to participate in a 70.3 Ironman (formerly known as the half Ironman). They drove down two days beforehand to relax and check out the course. After an evening of po’boy sandwiches and lots of laughter, they got up early to do a 10-mile reconnaissance bike ride along the designated route. “The parking lot had a boardwalk that extended into a bayou, and I remember us talking about how we needed to come back one day and fish there,” Powell said. “But I don’t remember any of the ride.” That’s because this was the ride that changed his life forever. From Punishment to Passion Powell grew up an only child, living in both Powder Springs and Paulding. He’s the kind of guy who enjoys reading as a hobby and draws inspiration from the Lord and stories from the Bible, but running was not an instant love for him. “It was something that I took on to get in shape,” he said. “I didn’t think I’d like it. As a high school football player, running was a punishment.” Powell blames his Aunt Sandra for getting him hooked on races, and what started out as a means to an end in 1996, slowly evolved into both a passion and a career. “Sandra started running seven years before I did,” he said. “She was the one who conned me into my first Peachtree Road Race.” Running 5Ks for fun soon became a passion for racing that rolled into running 50Ks (a race distance of approximately 31 miles). Since those PHOTO COURTESY OF STEVE GLASS PHOTOGRAPHY

early days, Powell has completed numerous 5Ks, 10Ks, Ironman competitions, more than 30 marathons and 30 ultra-marathons (anything longer than 26.2 miles). He even met his wife Sandra during a group run. So, what better career to stumble into than one that is sympathetic to the training schedule of a serious runner? In 1999, Powell started working at retail shops focused on running and cycling like Phidippides and Fleet Feet, eventually ending up at Big Peach Running Co. in 2007. “I always thought that this career was something I’d do until I found something else,” he said. “Then, I’d work with customers excited about getting their first pair of running shoes, and I’d get rejuvenated.” Guinn – the brother Powell never had – also caught the running bug in recent years. “He wanted to be a triathlete and would come to Big Peach and hang out and ask questions about running,” Powell said. At first, Guinn was the only one training for the New Orleans race, but at the last minute, Powell decided to participate in hopes of qualifying for another race. “We did some of our training together,” he said. “I had hopes that I would actually finish the race first and could run back and cheer Frank on to the finish.” The Day It All Changed Andrew's wife Sandra was 30 minutes away from boarding a flight to New Orleans to meet her husband at the finish line when she got an unexpected phone call. “I was told that Andrew had been hit by a car and sustained critical injuries and was going into surgery,” she said. “The hospital staff member told me that he was awake and wanted me to know that he loved me. I was in such a state of shock.” Her sister Kimberly Guinn was teaching at Lassiter High School at the time. When she received a call from 18

their mother in the middle of the day saying that Powell had been in an accident, Kimberly knew something was wrong. “Then, I realized she hadn’t mentioned Frank,” Kimberly said. “I started calling his phone and Googling every news source in New Orleans. By the time I got home, I knew what happened but couldn’t process it yet. We started calling every police agency in the New Orleans area. Finally, I was told to call the coroner’s office where a woman confirmed he was there.” According to cyclists riding toward Powell and Guinn that day, the two men were hit by a car. They were thrown across the hood and windshield and slid off of the passenger side of the car. Powell slid into the grass where he vaguely remembers waking up. Guinn did not survive. Powell was declared a T12 paraplegic due to a broken back, dislocated vertebrae and a spinal cord injury. The laundry list of other injuries included a complete pelvic fracture, broken sacrum and ankle. The days that followed were a haze for Powell. His wife recalls that he asked the same questions over and over — “Where am I?” “Did the driver stop?” “When is the race?” — and didn’t have a grasp of time. “When I first arrived at the hospital, I made the decision not to tell Andrew about Frank until after he was stabilized,” she said. “But I decided that if he asked, ‘Is Frank OK?’ I would tell him.” That moment arrived the day after the accident. “He was obviously upset but was more concerned about my sister, Kim, and her daughters,” Sandra said. “When he saw Kim, she knew exactly the right words to say to comfort Andrew, even though she was dealing with the overwhelming grief at the loss of Frank.”

Kimberly told Powell that he had no choice but to get better because her 7-year-old triplet girls needed their Uncle Andrew now more than ever. “For those who know Andrew, he can be stubborn as a mule and never backs down from a challenge,” Sandra said. “My sister knows that and threw down the gauntlet. Although we weren’t sure he fully understood the magnitude of what was ahead, it was game on and the focus was on training for what would become the biggest race of his life.” Road to Recovery In the hospital bed in New Orleans, Powell thought he’d never run again. “I was a wreck and rotated between physical and emotional pain,” he added. “But Sandra kept telling me, ‘It’s going to get better.’” After two weeks, he was transported to the Shepherd Center in Atlanta where Powell began two months of inpatient recovery. When Powell first arrived, he couldn’t move himself from the bed to his wheelchair. He had to rely on a harness, but eventually his upper body strength started to return, and he could make the transfer on his own. “I’d made a deal with myself and Frank — I wanted to do my part for the girls,” he said. “I wanted to be a better father and husband and realized that I couldn’t just give up.” From classes on how to live with a disability in the real world to physical therapy, almost every moment from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. was focused on recovery. “Andrew continues where others would stop!” Kimberly said. “That’s the thing that’s most inspiring. He doesn’t ever stop, and when others would ask for help and say it’s too hard, Andrew doesn’t.” Eventually, Powell returned home but continued to go to the day program at Shepherd every Monday through Friday, relying on a walker for movement. To build strength, he started indoor cycling, walking on a treadmill with a harness and swimming. In July, Powell’s 9-month-old grandson, Easton, came for a visit, and the family joked about who would walk first. “One day, I was alone and decided to try,” he said. “So, I pushed the walker out in front of me and was able to shuffle forward to it.” 20

Points North | December 2014 | pointsnorthatlanta.com

Within a month, he was able to a run a lap around the indoor track. “Once I realized I could run a little, I realized I could make this work,” Powell said. The ‘Run AP’ Movement On Sept. 26, surrounded by more than 100 friends and family members, Powell participated in his first 5K since the accident. The run started and ended at the Big Peach Running store in Kennesaw. “We organized the run and invited people to come out and do it as a way to say ‘thank you’ to the Shepherd Center and everyone else who has supported us,” Powell said. The crowd sported T-shirts that said “Run AP” and helped to raise close to $2,000 for the center. Still, Powell realizes that his recovery is far from over. Along with running, he also relies on CrossFit Kennesaw to help rebuild his strength. “I got pretty beat up, but it didn’t break me,” he said. “Before the accident, I would have described myself as invincible. Now, I’d describe myself as humble.” Others would describe him as inspiring. While the comeback doesn’t define who AP was before the accident, it certainly plays a role in who he is now. Eventually, Powell would like to start a Run AP Foundation that would support the Shepherd Center and athletes who’ve experienced similar injuries to his. “I am in such awe of Andrew and how hard he has fought to get through this tragedy,” Sandra said. “He continues to have excellent days, good days and really down days. We have learned that we have to celebrate the excellent days, appreciate the good days — and get through the down days.” Moved by the book “Lone Survivor,” the true story of a former Navy SEAL fighting to survive in the mountains of Afghanistan, Powell now has a tattoo on his arm that reads, “No matter how much it hurts, how dark it gets or how hard you fall … you are never out of the fight.” It’s a fact he knows all too well, and one that has also made him more determined than ever. Although that 100-mile race Powell dreamed of running one day might no longer be an obtainable goal, there is another race he’s already working toward: completing the 2015 Ironman New Orleans. Kim, Sandra and AP all plan to finish the race Frank never got to start. PN

Blue Ridge, Ga. It’s probably the most obvious (and literal) way to avoid the hustle and bustle of holiday traffic, but we say, hit the road for the R&R you need to actually enjoy this season. The best place to do it? Blue Ridge, Ga. offers one of the state’s cutest downtown streets for off-the-beaten-path shopping, totally acceptable cases of cabin fever and really good food. When apple picking season ends, the real fun begins at Mercier Orchards. Open year round, they keep visitors busy with a warehouse of holiday gifts, hard cider and wine tastings, cozy meals at the restaurant and live music to keep you moving on a chilly December afternoon. If you don’t spoil your appetite with Mercier’s apple cinnamon doughnuts (which we highly recommend), unwind at Black Sheep for dinner. With a brand-new winterized patio and eclectic bar, you can

BE BLOWN AWAY

PAMPER ON ANOTHER LEVEL

Drybar If your mental to-do list this season is running longer than a strand of twinkle lights, your hair is likely the last thing on your mind — unless you’re considering pulling it out. Sound familiar? Then quickly back away from the curling iron or other weapons of hair construction and get yourself a seat at Drybar. Not a typical bar — or salon, for that matter — Drybar is dedicated to the perfect blowout, at a flat rate of $40 and approximately 45 minutes. There are no cuts or color on their menu of services, only a well-stocked bar of one-of-a-kind hair products and a look book of styles to consider. Whether you’re in need of a sleek Manhattan, the voluminous Southern Comfort or relaxed vibe of the Mai Tai, happily quaff that “cocktail” of choice and let the coiffing begin. Their stylists also serve “floaters” (10-minute scalp massages) or “extra shots” to rejuvenate hair, as well as something to sip on. For the younger gals in your party who aren’t of age (10 and under), order a Shirley Temple style for just $28. The Spa Level at Ritz-Carlton Buckhead Ahhh … the spa. Oooh … the Ritz-Carlton. As if spending time within the serene surroundings of a spa isn’t enough to blissfully block out the rattle and hum of the holidays, imagine exiting elevator doors to an entire spa level. Talk about a warm and fuzzy feeling! At the Ritz-Carlton Buckhead, hotel guests and locals alike can mix and mingle before or after bumping elbows with eager shoppers. Better yet, to ramp up the relaxation this season, forgo the frustration of finding a parking spot in lieu of lazily shuffling (at about the same speed) to and fro in soft slippers and a luxuriously plush robe. Located on the ninth floor, the Spa Level — the first of its kind offered by The Ritz-Carlton — comes complete with a Spa Concierge, relaxation lounge, 16 boutique guest rooms and two suites. Let’s say, you choose to unwind with a 60-minute Atlanta Hot Stone Massage. Downsize your stress a little less by reserving a room, where you can kick back and enjoy lunch from the hotel’s In-Room Dining Spa menu capped with a much-need cat nap (all part of the

WORK OUT THE STRESS Barre3 Let’s face it — the holidays are no time to let your arms turn to jelly — there’s enough of that in the desserts. Other than endurance to carry loads of shopping bags from store to car to under the tree, you’ve got to stay flexible and agile enough to wrap everything you buy, carry casserole dishes to various parties and still have the strength to lift your wine glass to your lips – or your fork, we don’t judge. But working out rarely tops the priority list for busy bodies in December. Luckily, we’ve got the lockdown on fun, flexible workouts that make it easy to pop 32

in for a class, get your burn on and rejoin the festive fray bubbling with feel-good endorphins. Barre3 is the latest in targeted fitness, toning trouble zones and building a strong core, all in a slow-paced, relaxed environment that channels yoga, Pilates and empowerment. Whether you’ve tried every barre class, or you’re still wondering why it’s not spelled b-a-r, this is a class that’s easy to jump in on, get the hang of and truly enjoy. In addition to their East Cobb location, the new Midtown spot offers childcare and lockers, so there’s no excuse to skip the gym. Sign up for a class pack online, or jumpstart your usual fitness resolution with a routine for the next several months. Your biceps (i.e. wine-lifting muscles) will thank you. barre3.com

COOK UP FUN Publix Aprons Cooking School Make a mess you don’t have to clean up at Publix Aprons Cooking School in Alpharetta — the only one in Georgia. Regardless of skill or experience, these classes are designed to entertain and give customers confidence. Of course, professional appliances and ample space for demonstration abound, but resident chef Laura Lynn and her formally-trained instructors ensure their hands-on classes are nothing like what you’ve seen on “Hell’s Kitchen.” Believing some of the best moments in life happen around the table, they are eager to help you create your own moments during these two-to-three hour classes. With topics this month including Gluten-Free Holiday Cookies and Busche de Noel, donning an apron just got easier. Even kids can get creative with candy decorating at the Gingerbread Houses event on Saturdays and Sundays. If less activity and more eating is your idea of a relaxing cooking class, that’s okay, too. Sign up for demonstration classes such as ‘Tis The Seasoning, where you can enjoy a glass of eggnog or wine while chefs prepare holiday bites such as brie cheese crostini with apple compote and spiced rosemary glaze, grilled lamb lollipops with pumpkin spice compound butter

GET STOKED TO GET OUTDOORS Scottsdale Farms It’s ofďŹ cially too cold for putt-putt, but the changing leaves and crisp, cool air are too nice for an indoor family movie night. What do you do now? Grab the crew and venture to Scottsdale Farms in Alpharetta.

Rows of Christmas trees give you the chance to select your beautiful Blue Spruce together, the extensive gift shop provides last-minute greenery and home dĂŠcor, and the cafĂŠ serves warm, hearty food plus sweet treats and hot drinks all day long. It’s a day out of the house and into the spirit. Especially now that the countdown narrows, the team at Scottsdale Farms has a calendar packed with things to do, see and buy up until that last present goes under the tree. A popular pastime for many locals is a night (or afternoon) roasting S’mores amongst the Christmas trees, everyone snuggled under annels and fur, sipping hot chocolate from the cafĂŠ and watching kids squeal over Louis — the farm’s prized pig — and his clucking chicken companions. If your group can’t sit still, there are hayrides, visits with Santa (yep, he comes to Alpharetta for a sneak peek before Christmas), elďŹ sh craft activity classes and a whole lot more to keep everyone in the family well entertained. Ready to trade in those retail lines and parking lot confrontations for a community stove pipe and an ooey-gooey S’more? In our opinion, the holidays are more enjoyable already. Roasting S’mores is free with your own tools and supplies. scottsdalefarms.com

GIVE BACK VolunteerMatch Sometimes, all it takes is shifting the spotlight elsewhere to make a difference, both inwardly and outwardly. Besides an overwhelming sense of compassion that can’t be wrapped, helping those in need is a gift that might not fit under the tree, but can easily be placed in the center of most hearts. For many of us, lending a hand is less about wanting to and more about where — or how — to do so. Matching the causes we care about with the causes that need us is easy with VolunteerMatch, where more than 90,000 nonprofit organizations around the world are listed, providing would-be volunteers the chance to find a mission that matters most to them. Love the outdoors? Wilderness Works guides disadvantaged Atlanta children with interactive programs utilizing nature discovery and outdoor adventure, offering four types of camps ranging from hiking Stone Mountain to more rustic, longer camps in North Georgia and Western N.C. Almost every cause you’ve heard of and many more you haven’t can be found on VolunteerMatch - from cultural/performing arts, environment, youth, education/literacy, homeless, disabled, children/ youth to medical and crisis support. The benefits of VolunteerMatch have been listed in The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, The Christian Science Monitor and Chicago Tribune to name a few reputable sources and it’s as simple as choosing a cause (search by volunteer opportunities or organizations), connecting with a nonprofit and changing the world. THE NEW COLLEGE FOOTBALL PLAYOFF INCLUDES MEANINGFUL GAMES FOR ATLANTA’S CHICK-FIL-A PEACH BOWL { WRI TTEN BY C A RL DA NBURY | PHOTOG RA PHY C O URTE SY O F THE C HI C K-F I L-A PE AC H B OW L }

or the past 21 college foot-

F

ball seasons, fans have been clamoring for a way to rightly decide the national champion on the field, rather than in the opinion polls conducted with voting by sportswriters and coaches. The top two ranked teams have been matched up in the Bowl Championship Series (BCS) since 1998, but the selection process of those two teams has nearly always been subject to much debate. That process simply wasn’t good enough for college football fans, conference commissioners, athletic directors, coaches or players.

A New Era It took a number of hard-fought drives to reach the end zone, and now a newly formed selection committee representing the new College Football Playoff (CFP) will determine the top four teams rather than two, with two National Semifinal Games to be held on New Year’s Eve or New Year’s Day, depending upon the year. The winners of those two semifinal games will meet in the National Championship Game and the first of the new era will be held Monday Jan. 12, at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

The new CFP replaces the BCS, which replaced the Bowl Alliance, which replaced the Bowl Coalition. Got it? This year, the semifinal games will be played at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif., and the Allstate Sugar Bowl in New Orleans. That helps incorporate traditional bowl game venues into the CFP and Atlanta’s own Chickfil-A Peach Bowl at the Georgia Dome will be one of six sites (now dubbed the New Year’s Six) to host meaningful games under the new system. The Orange, Cotton and Fiesta Bowls also are featured venues for the CFP. But, once every three years

beginning in 2016, the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl will host one of those two National Semifinal Games, pitting either No. 1 versus No. 4, or No. 2 versus No. 3. The Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl likely was chosen as one of the six due to its 47-year history of creating great match-ups, its penchant and reputation for excellent hospitality, a strong title sponsor (Chick-fil-A since 1996), other meaningful corporate support and excellent contributions from volunteers and college football fans in the Atlanta area. “It’s a big step up for the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl to be mentioned in the same sentence with the Rose, Sugar, Cotton, Orange and Fiesta bowls. It’s a testament to what we have accomplished during the course of the past 47 years,” said Gary Stokan, President and CEO of the Chickfil-A Peach Bowl. 40

“We always had the goal of becoming a preeminent bowl game. When the opportunity presented itself to be able to bid to become one of those top bowl games in the new college football playoff system, we were successful. It took a lot of time, effort and relationship building,” Stokan affirmed. “Being included in the College Football Playoff is a payoff for a lot of hard work and now we have an opportunity to be the best of the best. That’s where our staff’s and our volunteers’ focus is now — to really elevate our game to the next level,” Stokan added. Bowl and the Chick-fi l-A Kickoff Game has hosted solidly in their corner, Atlanta’s annual bowl game is even more prestigious. While that is great news for the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl, its board, staff and volunteers, the added significance also extends to local residents, who now have the opportunity to secure great seats to the game, which in the past have been somewhat limited due to the large purchases made by the ACC, SEC and the fans of participating teams. Those two conferences and its member institutions were affiliated with the bowl game from 1992 to 2013. “Right now, we have great tickets available, not only for this year’s game and next year’s game played between two of the top [12] teams in the nation, but also for the National Semifi nal Game at the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl in 2016, which will feature either the No. 1 versus No. 4

match-up, or the No. 2 versus No. 3. We will host one of those games every three years, so in 2016 and in 2019, we will have two of the top four teams in college football in our city,” Stokan said. Fans that purchase tickets to this year’s Dec. 31 game, scheduled for kickoff

at 12:30 p.m., also will have the rights to purchase those same tickets for the games in both 2015 and 2016. “We want the local Atlanta-area residents to have that opportunity to see these great games. The best tickets are available now, before the participating teams are

announced Sunday Dec. 7 for our game,” Stokan said. Teams will be selected for the “New Year’s Six” bowl games from the following conferences and teams: the American Athletic Conference, Atlantic Coast Conference, Big Ten Conference, Big 12 Conference, Conference USA, Mid-American Conference, Mountain West Conference, PAC 12 Conference, Southeastern Conference and the Sunbelt Conference, as well as four independents (Notre Dame, Army, Navy and Brigham Young). The selection committee will choose the top four teams for the two semifinal games based on strength of schedule, head-to-head results, comparison of results against common opponents, championships won and other factors. The other eight teams not among the top four will be assigned to the available bowl games,

which this year will be played at the Cotton, Fiesta, Orange and Chick-fil-A Peach bowls. The committee will use geography as a consideration in the pairing of those teams. “In those years we don’t have a semifinal game, more often than not we will have an ACC or an SEC team on one side, and in some years maybe both,” Stokan related. Community Impact The magnitude of the game aside, Atlanta will benefit by welcoming new teams and fans to the city, and to new attractions like the College Football Hall of Fame, which will host welcome events and feature players of the participating schools in its exhibits. The economic impact generated from the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game, Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl and the SEC Championship Game could exceed $100 million this year, and those three games can be considered in the top 10 of all conventions held in Atlanta, which is the third largest convention city in the nation, according to Stokan. “College football is very important, alive and vibrant, and has a very large impact on the Atlanta market,” Stokan stated. The Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl, Kickoff Game and the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl Challenge charity golf tournament also impacts the community in other ways. Since 2002, the foundation has distributed $16.3 million in scholarship and charitable donations, and its Endowed Scholarship Program, created in 2006, funds scholarships at 24 universities with assets totaling more than $3.6 million. “The mission of Peach Bowl Inc. is to provide back to the community. We won’t back off that mission,” Stokan said. During this season of giving to others, that’s another great reason to support Atlanta’s own bowl game. PN

ELKHART LAKE BECKONS HOLIDAY TRAVELERS { WRITTEN BY JE N N I F E R C O LO S I MO }

Well, it’s December. For many of us in

the South, that means long shopping lines and hours manning a sugar-cookie-filled oven. For a small part of the population in Wisconsin, it is one of the most anticipated times of the year for trudging through snow, sipping hot cocoa and sampling fare from across the pond. The latter happens this month on Elkhart Lake, Wis. at the historic Osthoff Resort. Hundreds of vendors touting authentic, handmade goods set up shop for the annual Christmas Village. Hundreds upon hundreds of shoppers, vacationers and local fans flock to the great hall and stock up on fresh sausages, hand-blown glass ornaments, rich textiles and more. It’s a tradition meant for generations to enjoy – and one that nests perfectly into a town’s tradition for a vacation well spent.

A direct flight from Atlanta to Milwaukee and an easy hour’s drive north puts you into the tiny town of railway crossings, vintage shops and Road America, one of the most famous raceways in the nation. At Elkhart Lake, perhaps Wisconsin’s best-kept secret, some

of the state’s top cuisine can be found on menus featuring everything from award-winning wine, Midwestern spins on barbecue and order-at-the-counter sandwiches. It’s a retreat from the hustle and bustle of your stereotypical resort and city destinations. Stuff Your Face No, it’s not a very big town, and it doesn’t have anything to offer on the commercial side of things — unless you count a Subway that locals rarely mention. What it does boast is a handful of top-notch restaurants that have put as much care into curating their menus as they did their unique atmosphere. My very first meal at Lola’s on the Lake

proved that albeit a short trip, I wasn’t going to leave hungry. Lola’s rests on the lakeside front of The Osthoff Resort. It’s named after the general manager herself, and the same pride she carries for the resort seeps into both the menu and the restaurant’s service. If you only have one meal here, I suggest you try the Wisconsin Cheese Plate (it’s changed my go-to cheese choice), someone at your table share their scallops and then you split the Belgian Dark Chocolate Mousse Framboise — it’s as decadent as it sounds. Less than a mile away — walkable, if you’re ok with a little snow and a lot of cute architectural sightseeing — Lake Street Café welcomes diners into an easy dinner choice. On one side, you’ve got billiards, a bar and high-top tables perfect for enjoying a wood-fired pizza and something on draft. Through the hall, white linen tablecloths beckon sippers to peruse a Wine Spectator award-winning list gathered from around the country featuring more than 200 vinos ready to open, pour, swirl and enjoy alongside your Shiitake Chicken or Orecchiette Con Carne. If you doubted that the city encourages pedestrian activity, check yourself, because there are way too many calories to consume on its few streets for someone not to walk them off. My indulgent favorites were the center-oftown Off the Rail parked at the crossroads and sporting a walk-up counter of chalkboard menu paninis, soups, cold sandwiches and baked goods. The tiny little restaurant smells heavenly, making the options difficult to choose

between, but the Freight Train, a piled high portion of turkey, Havarti, bacon, sprouts and sourdough, was a wise decision. Around the corner, The Black Pig celebrates all things pork. Their signature Pork and Beef Chili is a perfect way to warm up amidst Midwest weather, but save room for the Berkshire Pork Egg Rolls and big bowls of Mac Attack macaroni and cheese. This Southern-inspired craft kitchen sits on top of what used to be the restaurant’s holding pen on busy nights — now a renovated bar and tribute to all things Road America.

Get Your Thrills Perhaps it’s more than appropriate that much of the town nods to the pastime because you can’t mention Elkhart Lake without noting the racing craze that put this destination on the map, as a dot or not. In the 1920s and 30s, spectators would line the streets to watch drivers whip around corners and accelerate down the straightaways. In a town once known for vacationing mobsters as well as well-todo families, the reasons to game and gamble were numerous — the racing fit right in. For obvious reasons — namely

-------------------standing on a street corner counting on the fact that a car’s brakes will work — the city decided to build an official raceway where the sport could be enjoyed safely and extensively, all year long. Now, Road America is one of the world’s fastest permanent road racing tracks, bringing multiple types of racing to the city, not to mention a few celebrity drivers and a ton of other park adventures. Besides the racing, seasonal vacationers are also drawn to numerous options for dining and relaxing, making Elkhart Lake quite a busy place when laps are completed. That’s where the magic of a small town’s charm begins, bringing visitors back year after year, often across several generations. The 4-mile lake glistens with water skiers, sunbathers, tubers and fishermen during the warm months, but once winter hits, The Osthoff Resort opens its onsite pond for ice-skating, sleds and snowshoes. See and Shop Till You Drop When temperatures drop, indoor itineraries abound. Owned by Pat Robison, Two Fish Gallery is decorated wall to wall with local and free trade artisan works and offers weekly art lessons in the workshop. Year-round entertainment produced by Victorian Village Theatre not to mention Aspira Spa’s treatment menu, which could keep you occupied (and relaxed) for an entire vacation, are two more agendafilling options popular with locals and tourists alike. For those brave enough to weather the cold, outside activities include ecology tours, biking and hiking trails that span the lake and, if your mind (and wallet) is still on

shopping, then your cold-weather temptations have just begun. The annual Old World Christmas Market kicks off the holiday season this month with vendors showcasing handmade goods, tasty treats, jewelry and more. But it’s not your average crafts show — these vendors are the real deal, with handmade goods that have made the trip overseas for hundreds of years. For 10 days, snow-dusted shoppers can immerse themselves in classic culture and take home a suitcase more than they came with while the kids can have breakfast with Santa, peek at the reindeer and participate in their own packed calendar of holiday-inspired activities. That is, of course, if they’re on the nice list. My own wish list includes another stay at The Osthoff Resort, a packing slip from Vintage Elkhart Lake (the town’s go-to wine, cheese and olive oil shop that will ship goodies that won’t fit in your carry-on), pottery classes and a day trip to visit the surrounding land’s historical treasures such as Henschel’s Indian Museum, a must-see stop where kids can search the grounds for stillburied arrowheads and more. For me, a zip code packed with Old-World culture came alive as a place for new discovery and endless adventure, topped off with a serene stay on a white-capped lake. It may be smack in the middle of nowhere, but it’s the somewhere I want to be the next time the South skips their snow season. PN

SEASONAL

sips

WRITTEN BY CARL DANBURY

BERLUCCHI ’61 ROSÉ

ALL THAT

sparkles IS NOT JUST GOLD

At innumerable celebrations during the holiday season, glasses are raised and toasts are offered. The American consumer is beginning to re-embrace sparkling wines. While Georgians don’t consume as much bubbly as more populous states like California, New York, Florida, Illinois and Texas, among others, reports from local retailers suggest that the Atlanta metro market has embraced Italian sparklers like Prosecco, Moscato and Brachetto. Italy’s production of sparkling wines typically use the Charmat method, where second fermentation takes place in pressurized tanks rather than in the bottle, but in the Franciacorta DOCG in Lombardia, producers use the same grape varieties (Pinot Noir, Chardonnay) as in Champagne, and use the Metodo Classico method, which involves a second fermentation in the bottle and extended aging on the so-called “lees,” or dead yeast cells. Many agree that Franciacorta producers are among the few that can go head-to-head with Champagne in terms of quality and prestige. One producer, Berlucchi, has been involved in the production of sparkling wines from Franciacorta since 1961, when Count Guido Berlucchi hired a young oenologist named Franco Ziliani. Together with Giorgio Lanciani, the trio produced 3,000 bottles of the classic method wines, which marked the birth of Franciacorta, the first time the geographic region appeared on a wine label. After the immediate success of Pinot di Franciacorta, Ziliani was encouraged to create Italy’s first classic-method rosé, dedicated to Berlucchi’s friend Max Imbert, a great lover of rosé.

is a blend of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. It has a definitive salmon-pink color due to the Pinot Noir, and a long lingering bead of fine, pinpoint bubbles. Elegant notes of wild berries are present, along with other ripe fruits, well integrated with notes of crusty bread. Refined and elegant, serve this sparkler as an aperitif, or with various kinds of cold meats, charcuterie or fully aged cheeses. Pairing it with shellfish also is recommended. berlucchi.us

BERLUCCHI ’61 BRUT blends the same two grapes, but carries 90 percent Chardonnay and only 10 percent Pinot Noir. Its color is straw yellow with greenish highlights. The wine displays an exceptional freshness and zesty acidity with a velvet texture and fine balance, concluding with appealing notes of citrus. Serve it with ravioli stuffed with cheeses, garlic, spinach and sage, risotto, fresh or salt-water flaky fish or with medium-aged cheeses. berlucchi.us

ARTIGIANI PROSECCO is made in the Charmat method in the Veneto region, using Glera grapes. Its overtone of citrus, honey, melon and almonds yields a crisp, clean taste, which complements dishes like calamari, crabmeat and oysters on the half shell. It also makes a great pairing for salads and pasta dishes with light sauces. donneevino.com

LA MARANZANA MOSCATO D’ASTI, made from 100 percent Muscate Blanc, has great character. Its color is golden straw yellow with a bouquet of fresh fruits like peach, apricot and orange, as well as acacia, wisteria and wildflower honey. On the palate, the wine is well-rounded, clean, delicate and musky, with attractive hints of sweet pastry. It is ideal to serve with desserts or pastries but its sweetness also complements spicy foods nicely. donneevino.com
