The Fine Print It’s the little things, right? Local stationery designers agree, and their latest suites allow personalization for each and every piece of paper. With these ideas, wedding invites go from refrigerator door to frame-worthy mementos.

Bye-Bye Borrowed and Blue Weddings might be rooted in tradition but most couples still want to put a personal stamp on the big day. One couple shares photos of how they added a slight spin to their occasion.

Timeless and Tech Savvy Whether it’s investing in luxury linens for your happily ever after or finding gadgets to make life a little simpler, a modern home is as high tech and timeless as it is “his” and “hers.” From 2.0 to heirloom quality, we found futuristic touches for every room.

SETTING UP A HOME IS RIFE WITH DECISIONS. Endless decisions that, in my case, lingered much longer than I care to confess, due to the nonstop internal debate of what to put where and if I put something there, whether it would be a new find or an heirloom piece. Even for the rooms that sat empty, it was only a matter of time until it all came together. Looking back now, I realize it’s comparable to wedding planning: a blank canvas that slowly becomes a vision. Fifteen years ago this spring, I said, “I will,” although my voice cracked so much that only the two of us and the pastor heard it. I still remember the whirlwind, almost all of it centered around the fact that while tradition had its place, my husband and I were on a mission to differentiate our day. Enter the wedding cake. While most brides were choosing towering ornate masterpieces, I was smitten with the vision of a square cake. Simple, but uncommon and when my husband added three layers of varying flavors, it became one of our first ‘his’ and ‘her’ decisions, followed by the band, the venue and hundreds of other little things to consider. This month, we’ve fallen head over heels into wedding topics ranging from creative paper products intended to garner almost as much attention as the bride and groom to how one couple put their own spin on their big day. Newlyweds or not, couples are always looking for ways to personalize their home, and thanks to innovations in the smart home industry, it’s now possible to marry modern day technology with classic comfort. For a cheat sheet on linen lingo, we talked to the experts at Peacock Alley. Whether you take notes or tear these pages out, the next time you see the words percale, sateen and thread count, you’ll sleep well knowing you’ve chosen wisely. Speaking of sleeping well, one of the smart home technologies we’ve tried and absolutely love is the Drift Light. No apps or electronic screens are necessary for this light bulb, which slowly dims off. It’s your own daily sunset, almost as if you followed Colleen Ann McNally on her adventures to the island of St. Kitts in the West Indies. May you find your own happily-ever-after in the tiniest of details this month.

written by JENNIFER COLOSIMO

W WHEN I GOT MARRIED,

I was excited about the to-do list. As an employee of the wedding industry, I relished in designing my own tablescapes. I couldn’t wait to select the perfect drape to swoop across our dance floor or plan the most envied, gluten-free dinner menu for our guests. That’s the thing about working inside the industry — you delve into the nitty-gritty that many brides never even know exists. Now that Pinterest has exploded, every bride with a computer expects industry-level custom detail. Much like I preferred to select the specific brand of bourbon we’d be using in the signature cocktails, Grace Ormond- and Style Me Pretty-inspired brides

can dig into what they truly want on their big day, whether that includes tiny personal touches that will ultimately qualify their design boards for publication or simply spur someone to say, “I never even thought to do that!” Amidst the infinite possibilities of new discernible details, the most exciting trends make their presence known very early in the process — at the stationer’s desk. Not just something for a refrigerator door, now each and every piece of paper is a keepsake, a memento and something to frame because they’re just that pretty. According to local industry experts, they’re also that impressive.

AISLE-INSPIRED ARTWORK As I pushed paper back and forth with some of the city’s coolest stationery companies, I learned about business owners that kick-started their careers by creating what wasn’t available when they tied their own knots. The results are a bevy of suites that have carved a different path (whether by X-ACTO knife or metaphorical trend) for brides to make their paper something of an art form. “Watercolors are really having a moment right now,” said Courtney Khail, owner of Courtney Khail Watercolors. “Not only are they adaptable to any style from romantic to modern, they also bring a

human touch.” Khail’s work channels her belief that each couple is special and the story they share is distinctly theirs. In fact, instead of offering pre-made design packages, she begins with a custom watercolor painted exclusively for them. “This allows me to ensure that I capture their personalities as well as provide 100-per-

cent custom work,” she said. “In fact, I feel the artwork is so important and meaningful that I gift my clients an 8-inch by 10-inch painting of their custom artwork to frame in their home after the big day.” A newcomer to the industry, Scotti Cline, owner of Scotti Cline Designs said, “A few years ago, I had a bride request a sketch of her actual

venue on her wedding invitation. I had never seen or thought to do that myself, but it turned out to be a really beautiful design element as well as something very personal to the couple.” That one sketch has grown into an impressive portfolio of venues around the South, and something completely different for her clients. As an added bonus, custom artwork doesn’t necessarily break the bank for brides eyeing the idea. “No matter what budget you’re working with, my clients are always happiest when we work together to create details that are personal to them,” Cline said. “Whether it’s a sketch, a silhouette of the couple or an image of their

dog, special design details are a wonderful, yet cost-effective, addition to any suite.”

PRESSING NEW STYLES “I love incorporating texture into my paper products,” said Sarah Sorrentino of Foglio Press when describing her own ideas. “I use unique handmade papers or different styles of ribbons that reflect the style of the wedding day, like raw silk for a more outdoorsy cer-

SAY IT BEAUTIFULLY ... A Georgia girl with a flair for details, Shannah J. Smith is the designer and curator behind her self-named Etsy shop. Her shop is packed with examples of exactly how Smith makes words come alive to say it beautifully in a visual way. “I love typography, textures, beautiful photos, swatches ... it makes me giddy when I can pull these elements together to create beautiful artwork,” Smith said of pursuing her dream. Of the wedding elements, like this heartfelt tie patch for the Father of the Bride, Smith said, “I particularly love the personalized ‘something blue’ wedding labels, custom tie patches, and the one-of-a-kind quilt labels. It’s so rewarding to know these items will be treasured for years to come.” To see more of her creativity, visit Smith’s little slice of Etsy at shannahjsmith.etsy.com.

emony versus a more refined silk-satin for a black-tie affair. I also encourage brides to think outside the box within the printing method itself, using letterpress or foil stamping.” Foglio Press, which tackled my specific ideas as a bride several years ago, has pushed the envelope in the last few seasons. As the industry has evolved and brides become more creatively inspired, Sorrentino has delivered a springboard for fresh ideas. “I’ve been known to use paper and ribbon as a sculptural element, to create unexpected details like tiny handcrafted crepe-paper flowers for drink stirrers, or miniature

grosgrain ribbon bow ties. Using unexpected materials like leather, wood and wire can take a classic style and add personality and fun.” Blending those non-traditional materials with a stationery suite is something of a specialty for the team behind Hi Note. A husband and wife team, the Palermos jumped into the industry after designing their own wedding suite. “We are really big on unique materials that aren’t actually paper,” Erin said. “We have used everything in the way of fabrics, from linen to leather, to various types of wood veneers. There is nothing that makes us more excited than a juxtaposition of materials – the challenge to ‘make oil and water mix’ really gets our creative juices flowing.” My favorite example is the company’s recent revamp of their own collateral. They created business cards of laseretched walnut wood veneer with the Hi Note logo stamped in copper foil — two mediums that wouldn’t normally go together, but quickly garner attention and strike conversation. “Weddings are abundant, especially during certain milestones in a person’s life,” she said. “It’s important that your event is as memorable as your own and custom graphics and stationery are a great way to stand out from the rest.”

and grooms’ ideas. “[That’s who] inspires us,” she said. “They come into the design studio and request some of the best stuff.” Some of those elements include experimenting with different color combinations and calligraphy styles, custom, hand-painted designs on different materials used as table numbers, ceremony signage and reception décor. Hladish has even printed seating charts on wood, acrylic and several types of fabric, replacing the traditional table of endless folded escort cards. Maria “Mia” Alsup and Maria “Mia” Bond — co-founders, brand designers and visionaries with the same name — are the duo behind Mia Maria Designs. They second the notion to incorporate fun, pretty seating charts into your reception décor, as it not only cuts down on the amount of paper you’re producing (and paying for), it also can serve as a focal point to welcome guests. “At a reception, when you’re already running short on space, it eliminates the need for a separate escort card table and adds another fun piece of décor, all while [maintaining] your wedding brand,” Alsup said. They also suggested letting your stationer create a custom wedding logo for your suite. “While we love designing each and every piece of a suite from top to bottom, a custom logo can [bring everything together] while still being cost effective,” Bond added. Those wedding logos are used to personalize the event in small, but bold ways, like on photo booth props, stamps and stickers for the welcome bags, wine labels and cork coasters. In fact, the only thing I am left wondering is if it is too soon to renew my vows so that I can use these new ideas for myself? A Tribute

FOR TWO written by CARL DANBURY, JR. photography by LIZ ERIKSON PHOTOGRAPHY unless noted otherwise

F

FROM AN EARLY AGE, a young lady often imagines what her wed-

ding day will be like. Her family members and the groom’s family often interject how they imagine the ceremony and the celebration will unfold, as well as what elements they think should be included. Sometimes, soon-to-be-brides can get frustrated with the planning process and the actual execution of the fateful day. While some couples hold fast to honored traditions, others choose to imprint their collective personal stamp on their special day by ditching the borrowed, blue, old and new and create a day that’s a reflection of both of them as two. Sean O’Keefe of Sean O’Keefe Events was charged with arranging, then executing Samantha and Michael Hendrickson’s collective mosaic for their wedding day. Their vision was to take elements from both the maternal and paternal sides of their families to create a tribute to all four while staying true to those elements that reflect their own identity as a couple. From the color scheme to the choice of flowers, from the libations chosen to the entertainment booked, from the seating arrangements to the sparkler send-off, most elements were part of the couple’s upbringing and relationship. “As a planner, working with the bride and groom to create their special day, the most important thing for me to do is to glean certain iconic, memorable aspects of their courtship, their childhoods and their heritages,” O’Keefe related. “You have to listen to the client, you have to dig to find funny stories about them and try to translate that humor into the event. We want to find out exactly what they want their ceremony to be, how they want to celebrate and then make it a reality.” Caryn Kroll, vice president of Sean O’Keefe Events, with a meticulous eye for detail, works in concert with Rebecca Niccole, the day-of-wedding coordinator, to script a seamless run of show orchestrated by all staff on hand, from the caterer, to the chef, to the bartenders, to the individuals that are creating the overall setting; there is nothing that they don’t oversee. “Every guest’s whim is attended by the staff, and no request is too small or too great,” O’Keefe said. “Having the perfect day-of coordinator is essential for making the bride feel as if nothing will go wrong with graciousness and calm. While we may be changing the traditional script for a wedding, one thing that must never change is attention to detail and outstanding personal service and attentiveness.”

LIKE SO MANY FAMILIES who have relocated to the Atlanta area, neither the bride nor groom were born here and had no direct connection to a sense of place. However, it was important to both that the venue have an Atlanta lineage, character and not be ultramodern. O’Keefe suggested Callanwolde Fine Arts Center because he had done numerous events at the 27,000-square-foot, Tudor Revival style mansion that was completed in 1920. Situated on a 12.5-acre estate of beautifully landscaped gardens and wooded grounds in the Druid Hills neighborhood, it is more centrally located for out-of-town guests. Features such as the grand staircase, fully enclosed courtyard, large kitchen and individual rooms gave the ceremony and reception a very comfortable, homey feel. “The couple can feel like they are being married in a fabulous, private home,” O’Keefe said. “The staff at Callanwolde is impeccable. The team of Callanwolde housemen, who behind the scenes execute and help create the staging areas for each aspect of your event, are beyond exceptional. They are just so talented.” callanwolde.org

She began taking notes about those things she missed, which led her to begin creating cupcakes and other baked goods that now allow all of us to cheat sweetly. So that guests were able to experience more than just one flavor from the focal wedding cake, Tubbs created two others for guests to enjoy and provided an assortment of “cruffles” too, which are her decadent versions of cake pops. MARTY HELLING, head floral designer for Sean O’Keefe Events, has a new studio in O’Keefe’s location on Faulkner Road in Atlanta. But before he embarks upon the design, a unique floral tour at the wholesaler of choice is conducted. “They have the choice of everything that is hot and seasonal. That way they can handpick all of their flowers. It’s one thing to look at a Pinterest board of what they want, but being able to experience a floral design from the view of the florist is one of the high points of what our clients experience,” O’Keefe said. “Marty incorporated whimsical touches to create a classic bouquet. He juxtaposed two desert flowers, blue thistle and succulence, against lush roses. He also echoed the bride’s bouquet for other arrangements placed in all other rooms. He was able to create these avant-garde arrangements using southern flowers like white hydrangea and amnesia roses, along with desert flowers like the blue thistle and succulence.” seanokeefeevents.com

RECEPTIONS ARE SUCH A SOCIAL occasion and the guest list included many who had never met. O’Keefe encouraged the use of buffets, strolling stations and open seating. “Typical receptions include a seated dinner, but few people want to sit at a long table with a person on their left and a person on their right for three hours anymore. It’s far too much of a social occasion. Buffet or strolling stations get the guests up and active. This promotes mingling and conversation, and no need for seat assignments,” O’Keefe related. And as it concerned the choice of cuisine, O’Keefe suggested including those foods that celebrated the couple’s history, origins and backgrounds. “Long gone are the days of dry chicken and overcooked steak sharing the same plate for the reception. We included some of the favorite foods of the bride and groom, and incorporated design elements in those rooms that spoke of their history. We wanted to make sure that there was a cohesiveness of the style of foods and the room in which it is placed, and made sure the decorator understood that vision. We included seersucker in the Atlanta room, and gold in the New Orleans room. In a modern world, the lounge environment that we created provides a much more comfortable aura for weddings, and is much more conducive to conversation,” O’Keefe related. Choosing a planner like O’Keefe for your event also opens a treasure trove of relationships you likely don’t have, such as rental furniture for the event. Event Rentals Unlimited (ERU) is second-to-none in the Atlanta area, according to O’Keefe. “The second most important thing for an event of this magnitude is finding a company that can augment what your facility has to offer. ERU has everything, and basically all of it is brand new, or is maintained like it is. They offer a huge selection of chic, Southern-style furnishings and accent pieces to create the exact setting the couple envisions,” he said. erultd.com

SINCE BOTH FAMILIES HAVE A CAJUN CONNECTION, it was imperative that we included our personal heritage stamp into the planning of the menu. With a familiarity and fondness for Ruth and Marc Wegman of Adele’s on Canton in Roswell, we sought their advice on dishes that could be prepared in advance, transported to Callanwolde, and still be perfect for the guests when served late in the afternoon. They suggested red beans and rice, seafood gumbo and Mac ‘n Tails (crawfish Mac ‘n Cheese) for the New Orleans Room. An assortment of Abita Beers, from Abita Springs, La., was provided to accompany the Cajun delicacies, where the good times rolled for several hours. adelescajun.com

Pulled pork, chopped beef brisket, cornbread muffins, mac n’ cheese, sweet potato biscuits, squash casserole and brocoli slaw were featured in the Atlanta Room for the reception. Generous couches and settees were incorporated into the room design, along with seersucker, to provide the perfect complement for the relaxed setting and exquisitely prepared comfort food. zestatlanta.com

WHEN IT COMES to weddings, every bride wants her day to be special and memorable — for everyone. The brainstorming often begins not long after the engagement ring is slipped on and the whirlwind of planning bridal luncheons, bachelorette parties, the ceremony and the reception unfolds shortly thereafter. Coming in a close second for wanting that day to be as exceptional as the bride herself is Nancy Resman, wedding specialist for Ritz-Carlton, Buckhead. From the brainstorm session through happily ever after, Resman has been making dreams come true for brides from the Grand Cayman to Georgia. Points North Atlanta recently caught up with her to get the inside scoop. “There are so many things you can do locally for brides, grooms and even couple events and still feel like they are away from home,” Resman said. “Coming in to do anything at a Ritz-Carlton is an experience in itself.”

enjoy added perks: the resident bowtie expert will stop by the groom’s suite to teach everyone the art of tying the perfect bowtie and perhaps, even better, present a selection of bourbons to taste. How’s that for calming the wedding day nerves?

FOR THE GALS: WELLNESS WEEKEND The Ritz-Carlton, Buckhead has renovated two of the guestroom suites on the Wellness Level. Featuring signature amenities tailored to wellness goals and allowing for a personalization of the stay based on rejuvenation preferences, the bride and her party can choose between The Jasmine Suite and the White Lotus Suite. Best for relaxation and improved sleep, The Jasmine Suite features blackout drapes, an electric fireplace, sound machine, air purifier, hidden television, soothing wake up technology, aromatherapy, yoga and meditation corner and a relaxing color palette. In addition, the Wellness Level features custom, cold-pressed juices through a partnership with local juice purveyor Bamboo Juices, which includes a custom “Lavender Milk” juice created with the Jasmine Suite in mind. On the flip side, the White Lotus flower is associated with the state of becoming awakened and its namesake suite at the Ritz is designed accordingly. When a person reaches this state, it is said that they have achieved mental purity and reached a state of spiritual perfection. The White Lotus Suite will energize, invigorate and renew the senses, leaving guests strengthened and centered. Features of the suite include a spin bike, stand-up desk, energizing aromatherapy, a hanging chair, Tempur-Pedic bedding and an invigorating color scheme. A signature “Lemon & Greens” Bamboo Juices blend is also offered in this suite. Of course, when it comes to spoiling anyone, the Spa is hard to beat. Groups of 10 or more can create custom Spa activities or fitness classes, perfect for a bachelorette weekend or a pre-wedding day workout. Possible classes include: Apothecary Workshop, Organic Skincare Workshop, Group Yoga, Pilates or Aqua Aerobics Classes or Chair Massage Services. 30 | POINTS NORTH | February 2016

FOR COUPLES: THE CULINARY CHALLENGE Hands-down, our favorite activity that Resman mentioned is the co-ed culinary challenge. It goes a little something like this: the wedding party divides into teams — could be co-ed, or old-school style with girls against the boys — then the chef demonstrates exactly how to make the dish each team will have to recreate as well as provides them with tools and ingredients. The timer is set for 30 minutes and … GO! Each team crafts the best dish possible, which the chef judges at the end. Winning team gets bragging rights and a trophy, but afterwards everyone is invited to what Resman described as a “crazy, knock-down cocktail party” packed with plenty of laughs as kitchen stories circulate. Another option for couples looking to up their information quota rather than their cooking skills is the hotel’s panel of on-hand professionals. “We can bring in experts that can speak to couples focused on honing in certain experiences, whether that is an in-house sommelier to discuss wine, honeymoon experts to fine tune travel plans or Tiffany to talk about rings.” “Men really want to have a say and are much more involved then they were just a decade ago,” Resman said, adding that yet another fun option is for the bride and groom to come in and create their own signature drink (even handcrafted sodas) for their event. “It is all about creating an experience and what it takes to get to ‘wow’ for them and for their guests. That’s what makes it a real Ritz-Carlton experience.” PN

There are people that see making the bed as a chore. Then there’s Mary Ella Gabler, who not only takes joy in feathering the nest, so to speak, her family has built a business around it. Dallas-based Peacock Alley has been synonymous with luxury linens and timeless pieces for more than 30 years, but her success didn’t happen overnight.

a void in the market and set out to develop a fashionable bedding collection. She aimed to appeal to stylish consumers looking to dress their bedroom the same way they dressed themselves: in natural fibers, classic silhouettes and pleasing colors. It’s a comforting story of one woman’s vision and daring endeavor. One that makes it hard not to curl up on one of the beautiful display beds throughout Peacock Alley’s design studio at Atlanta Decorative Arts Center (ADAC) – the second one in the country before successfully launching their third in Nashville, Tenn. last fall. Learning the story behind the brand, I also discovered that while Peacock Alley strives to make bedrooms a place of peace with a no-fuss approach to style, there are still a few key decisions to make first. When we spend a third of our lives sleeping, why not make it count? Luckily, Gabler and Director of Retail Brad Cleveland shared knowledge they’ve gained through decades as industry leaders. With these simplified tips, you could almost choose with your eyes closed.

His SMART is the

NEW BLACK Today’s Home of Tomorrow written by CLIFF LUMMUS

A short

two decades removed from the mass spread of the Internet (dial-up, that is) into American households, homes are now as integrated and interconnected as they have ever been. This is all thanks to the recent tech explosion of the smart home industry. Combined with the computing power of our smartphones and tablets, this new generation of devices has presented an unprecedented ability to monitor, control, change and customize almost every facet of the home-life experience. We sat down with Marc Baron, an Atlanta-area senior systems administrator and IT expert to discuss what has contributed to the surge in smart home technology. “In my experience, many users are relying more heavily on tablets/ smartphones in their homes over laptops. They are cheaper, efficient and they have Internet access and applications to control home automation,” Baron said. “Technology is advancing quickly in so many areas of our daily lives,” he added. “A decade ago, not too many homes had Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi-connected devices. We can now control all facets of our home from iOS/Android apps including lighting, security, home audio/video and thermostats. We are an Internet-connected society.” Baron is right. What began with Roombas and Smart TVs and then iPhone-controllable lights and thermostats has given way to Wi-Fi security cameras, mobile-alerting carbon monoxide detectors and a slew of handy innovations. What’s more, these devices are not only available, but many have become surprisingly affordable. Of course, as with any home improvement, the sky is the limit as to the time and money that can be spent. To start, we’ve got a room-by-room rundown of the latest smart home trends for 2016.

Overhead

SUNSETS IN EVERY ROOM Offering the latest in progressive lighting is the Drift Light. With two flips of the switch, the Drift Light fades to dark in 37 minutes – the time of the average sunset – allowing for a gradual easing down at bedtime. Less of a lightbulb moment than a solution to a problem, the Drift Light was created by Preston Wily whose little girl, Grace, loved to read before bed. “The Drift Light was originally made for my 4-year-old daughter and it wasn’t supposed to be a sleeping aid so much as a reading aid. When I let her read in bed, I often forgot to sneak back in and turn off her light so it would stay on all night (and when she woke up in the middle of the night, she would be wide awake). I worked with our engineers to build a prototype of a bulb that would mimic a sunset in hopes that I could set it [to] dim so slowly she [wouldn’t] realize it was dimming and finally turn off.” Wily and his team tested the prototype and discovered an unexpected, but as he added, a very welcome side effect.

Offering the latest in progressive lighting is the Drift Light. With two flips of the switch, the Drift Light fades to dark in 37 minutes. “Grace started falling asleep much quicker than she ever did before,” Wily added. “We thought this was probably anecdotal, but looking into medical research showing the link between light and melatonin production got our attention. Simply put, the amount that light suppresses melatonin production is based on three factors, for which our engineers optimized the bulb: color temperature, light intensity and duration of exposure.” With research showing how prevalent sleep problems are and that many of these issues stem from advances in artificial light (many popular LED bulbs include a lot of blue light since more lumens per watt, means lower operating costs), the Drift Light has garnered much attention … and created an ideal sleep environment. $25, drift-light.com

WIRED FOR SOUND AND LIGHT One of the more costly and labor-intensive custom add-ons to any home is wiring a room for premium sound. Now, a light socket and a speaker hub are one and the same, boasting a new generation of all-in-one light bulbs. One of the most popular is the MiPow PLAYBULB, an app- controllable bulb with four different color settings. $80, playbulb.com

SMART HOMES

On the Walls

ONE-TOUCH PRIVACY Remote control and electronic blinds were once reserved for high-end homes and swanky hotel rooms. Now, this luxury amenity can be added to any room for hundreds instead of thousands of dollars. Some systems even allow for automated schedules to easily set the mood, save energy and discourage prying eyes. $360-400, serenashades.com

THE PERFECT TEMPERATURE The signature smart home staple over the last several years has been the thermostat, and Nest has become the byword and name brand synonymous with these handy products. Now in its third generation, the Nest thermostat learns your routines, and creates a personalized schedule based on your comings and goings. App-controllable, Nest can even show ways to cut energy usage and be more environmentally friendly, hence the Nest tagline “programs itself, then pays for itself.” $250, nest.com

LIFE-SAVING WITHOUT THE EARDRUM RUPTURE Say so long to the ear-piercing screech of the smoke detector. Along with its next-generation thermostats, Nest and others have also produced a high-quality line of smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Many of these devices send mobile alerts, communicate with other units within your home, and can even distinguish between smoke and carbon monoxide threats to let you know the source of the problem. The best

PEARLY WHITES VIA BLUETOOTH Don’t worry, there’s no cameras. Just toothbrushes like the Oral-B SmartSeries that connects you to your day-to-day dental health like never before. Enraptured Escape S AVORI NG THE I SL AN D O F ST. KI TTS written by COLLEEN ANN MCNALLY

aboard an otherwise crowded flight, I scooted toward the window with a sly smile and anticipated sailing through the sky over 50 shades of turquoise Caribbean waters. Waves of excitement washed over me, even before the pilot announced, “The weather looks like we’re in for a smooth flight, and it’s going to be another gorgeous day in Basseterre.” If the extra elbowroom was any indication, I suspected this island escape to St. Kitts would provide ample space to relax and explore.

WARM WELCOME Awaiting my arrival was a Porsche, which whisked me to the luxurious YU Lounge — a private airport terminal, where a glass of Veuve Clicquot, a renowned French champagne, is customary to pass the time while concierge services handle baggage as well as expedite immigration and custom formalities. This warm welcome comes com54 | POINTS NORTH | February 2016

pliments of the VIP Experience package available to guests staying at the St. Kitts Marriott and Royal Beach Casino, the largest luxury resort option on the island. During the 15-minute drive to the hotel, my eyes stayed glued to the window. As one of the British Virgin Islands, the culture is a unique blend of predominantly French, American and English, including one characteristic instantly recognizable on the road. Our driver sped along the left side of the road with few exceptions, as only stop signs — no traffic lights — dot the 23-mile-long, 5-mile-wide slice of paradise. The lush, hilly gradient of green seemed to rise from the surrounding blue waters and behind a thin layer of mist, maybe clouds in the air, making the whole scene surreal. Brightly painted houses hugged the hillsides along the coast, appearing like Batik hung on a clothesline, and I wondered how Christopher Columbus felt when he first spotted the island in 1493. I felt as if I’d traveled to a different planet. The landscape is so different than Georgia’s Piedmont, as is the laid-back lifestyle.

Reconfirming I was, in fact, in the middle of the West Indies was the map mural behind the front desk of the open-air, sunshine-yellow St. Kitts Marriott. Express check-in was made breezy thanks to the hotel’s VIP Experience, which includes a bottle of sparkling wine waiting in your spacious Royal Ocean View Suite in addition to arrival and departure perks at the YU Lounge. Before heading to my room, I reveled in the island’s balmy air and tried to take it all in. Flanking the main building are several three-story garden houses that offer one and two-bedroom suites, while nightclubs, the pool and miles of beach preside ahead. I watched a bellhop greet a fellow group of guests as if they were long-lost friends. Purchasing packages isn’t the only way to get special treatment; friendliness is as common with Kittians as spice is in their food.

TASTING THE DIFFERENCE Caribbean flavor sets the tone in the eight restaurants and three lounges on property, and one glance at the menu reveals a few surprises. Before bananas ripen, Kittians refer to them as “green figs” – a local favorite that can be boiled, steamed or mashed like potatoes with milk and butter. Pumpkin soup is not just a trendy dish served in October, but rather a staple since the squash grows year-round in the island’s fertile soil.

ST. KITTS

I was taken aback, however, by dishes expected to be familiar such as a spinach and feta croissant at Café Calypso and later, the butter-poached Frigate Bay Reef lobster at Blu Restaurant. Each bite is packed with extra oomph. “We have to remind you that you are in St. Kitts,” Lavern Stevens often said with a big grin at meals. Stevens is the resort’s public relations manager, but also the unofficial mayor it seems, since everywhere she goes, she greets others with hugs. A native of the island, she was a helpful walking encyclopedia, especially when it came to spotting fruit on trees and knowing where to eat. She told stories of farmers that scratch their heads when asked if they grow “organic” or not because they don’t know any other way. Of course, any local you ask has a different little shack they claim to be a "must visit." The longer I stayed, the longer my list grew — pork chops from Rock Lobster, paper-plated seafood at Sprat Net, conch fritters at Ballahoo — but with Stevens as my guide on and off the resort, we opted for elegant coastal spots like the Carambola Beach Club on South Friar’s Bay and Spice Mill Restaurant on Cockleshell Beach. Hours could easily pass on the day beds, lounge chairs and love seats outside the hacienda-styled Carambola restaurant. After the most savory pumpkin soup I sampled on the island, Carambola’s culinary shock came in the form of incredible sushi. Since fresh catch can go fast, my ordering decision wasn’t difficult at Spice Mill: I snatched the daily special of seasoned red snapper with jasmine rice.

This time, Stevens didn’t have to remind me. By the end of the meal, I was well aware I was in St. Kitts. Spice Mill operated on island time, so even if you have a reservation, chances are you’ll enjoy a Carib lager, “Ting with a Sting” or fruity concoction at the bar before being seated. On the flip side, I’m guessing their staff will also understand if you’re running late because you had to kick off your shoes for one more stroll on the sand.

MONKEYING AROUND When the entrance to the largest Vegas-style casino in the Caribbean and recently renovated Ultra Lounge is located just off the St. Kitts Marriott lobby, exciting opportunities abound. If splitting aces doesn’t get your heart racing, head outdoors, where thrilling adventures include safaris to Mount Liamuiga Volcano, panoramic photo ops at the top of Brimstone Hill Fortress, zip lines above banana trees and bougainvillea or living history lessons. Once owned by ancestors of President Thomas Jefferson, Romney Manor is a striking estate, rich in colonial history of the island’s valuable sugar trade and covered with tropical plants and a 400-year-old Saman Tree. Today, the manor is home to the Caribelle Batik Factory, where visitors can discover ancient Indonesian methods used to craft spectacularly dyed fashions and colorful wall hangings. Aside from open-air dining and waking up to ocean views, my favorite excursion was being out on the water. morning, but the crew was already blasting the reggae music and mixing cold drinks before we set sail to Nevis for snorkeling and a barbecue lunch. Known as St. Kitt’s sister island, Nevis is one of the most unspoiled and relaxed islands in the Caribbean Sea. The lack of pretentiousness is no more apparent than at Sunshine’s. The funky beach bar and grill is equally popular among the locals as the superstars who have visited over the years — photographs of their recognizable smiling faces wallpaper the shack’s interior — so you never know who you might spot in the neighboring cabana. Sunshine’s infamous “Killer Bees” rum punch is made from a secret recipe that will keep everyone buzzing. Our catamaran captain let us off with two warnings: to not have more than one (okay, maybe two) Bees if we wanted back on his boat, and to keep an eye on the cunning monkeys. We arrived back in Basseterre with the late afternoon daylight casting a glow on the colorful landscape that may scientifically be impossible to see without smiling. When your body starts to feel like a rum cake baked in the sun, rejuvenate at the 15,000-square-foot Emerald Mist Spa inside the St. Kitts Marriott. Their signature bamboo massage uses a deep tissue technique enhanced with warm bamboo stalks to revive poor circulation, ease sore muscles and realign the mind, body and spirit. Funny how island time suddenly speeds up when you have a plane to catch. With souvenir plush monkey and bottle of locally distilled rum packed safely in my luggage, I took one more deep breath of the balmy, ocean air. My phone was full of photographs and I had already mentally redecorated my kitchen back home with West Indies flair: white walls, pops of color and a well-stocked spice rack. I may have had a direct flight on the way home, but I was already dreaming of different excuses to come back. Intoxicating natural beauty, sunny skies, warm waters and white sandy beaches are the reasons many travelers come to St. Kitts, one of the most seductive spots in the Caribbean. Regardless of what brings you here, leaving with just one taste of St. Kitts is one you won’t soon forget. PN

To continue living the lives we love with the ones we care about most, keeping our hearts healthy is a must. Points North Atlanta spoke with local experts for a check-up on what you need to know and where to get outstanding care close to home. THROMBOSIS 101 For better or worse, everyone goes through some sort of pain, whether it is a headache or due to an injury. Atul Laddu, M.D., Ph.D., of Suwanee knows this all too well after his career in the medical field. Laddu has a passion for sharing his knowledge about thrombotic conditions with the local community. He recently worked with Aditya Bhave, a student at South Forsyth High School, to compile this helpful overview. According to the retired doctor, thrombosis is the formation of a blood clot within a blood vessel causing a partial or total obstruction, which prevents blood from flowing normally through the circulatory system. Caused by a variety of contributing factors, thrombus can be scary, particularly if it appears in the blood vessels of the heart, and can result in a heart attack; if it is in the blood vessels of the brain, it is known as a stroke, if it occurs in the leg, it is known as deep vein thrombosis, or DVT — all of which can be life threatening. Although not well known to everyone, the incidence

of thrombotic events is unusually high. Laddu said one person is diagnosed with a blood clot every minute and one person dies from a blood clot every six minutes. Thrombotic conditions almost always cause pain – not only to the patient, but also for the family members, who have to modify their life; by the community; by the employer due to loss of time by the employer; and the nation, since the nation spends money in the treatment and rehabilitation process of such patients. The primary goal of the Georgia Thrombosis Forum (GTF), an affliate of the North American Thrombosis Forum (NATF), is to make the citizens of Georgia aware of this deadly condition and to prevent it by sharing knowledge as Laddu continues to do. Being informed is the first step in avoiding thrombosis altogether. Find more helpful resources about causes, symptoms, diagnosis and treatment online at gtfonline.net and natfonlie.org.

MORE TO LOVE ABOUT NORTHSIDE HOSPITAL HEART AND VASCULAR INSTITUTE Preeclampsia poses an immediate and all-too-common threat to pregnancy, but is also associated with later-life cardiovascular disease in the women it affects. Preeclampsia is the most common complication of pregnancy — characterized by a rise in blood pressure, large amounts of protein in the urine and swelling of the hands, feet and face. Its cause is unknown. Northside Hospital is bridging the gap between maternal and cardiac care. The hospital’s Maternal Heart Health Clinic educates women about their risk factors and screens them to detect the early development of cardiovascular disease before it progresses. The Clinic augments Northside’s ongoing commitment of providing

expert and comprehensive care for patients with preeclampsia. Specialists at Northside Hospital have the expertise to accurately diagnose this nuanced disorder. A multidisciplinary team of cardiologists, nurse practitioners, exercise physiologists and nutritionists work closely with perinatologists and obstetricians to treat preeclampsia and provide follow-up care and management after patients deliver. They also look to collaborate with community physicians in the care and management of their patients. Equipped with the right knowledge of this disorder in its early stages, Northside Hospital patients can lead healthy and productive lives. VEINATLANTA EXPANDS INTO GWINNETT COUNTY Atlanta’s vein doctor, Louis Prevosti, MD, is expanding his practice outside of Atlanta. VEINatlanta opened its second location in Gwinnett County in Jan. 2016. During the past five years, VEINatlanta in Sandy Springs has grown into one of the busiest and most respected vein clinics in the country. Twenty-five years of experience performing cardiovascular surgery, 100-percent full-time commitment to vein treatment and a staff solely focused on venous disease has allowed VEINatlanta to make a difference in leg vein health. “Our Sandy Springs office has made a significant impact in our community,” Prevosti said. “With many of our patients making the long commute to our Atlanta office, it was important to us to be able to offer the same expertise, knowledge and care to an extended area. Gwinnett County was the ideal choice.” In April 2015, Prevosti brought on board fellow cardiovascular surgeon Dr. James Fonger. Trained and on staff at the Johns Hopkins Hospital, Fonger has performed thousands of heart operations and is nationally recognized for his innovations in medical devices and the latest surgical technology. He brings his expertise and training to the VEINatlanta Gwinnett County location at 601 A Professional Drive, Suite 170, in Lawrenceville, near Gwinnett Medical Center. VEINatlanta is the first and only vein clinic in Atlanta to receive Vein Center certification from the Intersocietal Accreditation Counsel. Prevosti and Fonger treat all venous problems including venous insufficiency, blood clots, leg pain, tired, heavy, achy legs, night cramps, restless leg, leg swelling, varicose veins and spider veins. They also treat facial veins and hand veins. Learn more by calling 678-214-4299 or visiting veinatlanta.com.

NEW TECHNOLOGY RESOLVES SYMPTOMS FOR INOPERABLE PATIENTS WITH LEAKY HEART VALVES WellStar Kennestone Hospital, one of the nation’s top cardiac programs, is now offering a minimally invasive solution for some people with mitral valve regurgitation who are not candidates for surgery. Until now, patients with “leaky valves” have had to live with poorly treated symptoms and repeat hospitalizations. Thankfully, the new MitraClip procedure offers a better quality of life. To better understand mitral valves, imagine swinging double doors. The doors open for blood to travel from one space in the heart to the next. The doors close to stop the blood from flowing backwards. As people age, the valves can’t always close, causing blood to flow backwards and the heart muscle to work twice as hard to pump blood through the body. Sometimes, heart failure is the result. MitraClip is the first minimally invasive solution for patients with degenerative mitral valve regurgitation. The valves are clipped together for decreased backflow of the blood and better overall circulation. The success rate is 95 percent, offering a solution to patients with no options in the past. People with mitral valve regurgitation can discuss whether surgery or the MitraClip procedure is right for them with their cardiologist. Anyone experiencing chest tightness, pain, exhaustion or swollen legs should see a doctor immediately. For more information, contact WellStar Structural Heart and Valve Program at 770-590-4180.

Guy’s TIME

Father of the Bride written by CARL DANBURY, JR.

O

Our new son-in-law Michael asked for permission to marry Samantha on April Fool’s Day. Exactly 292 days later (12 days past the average length of human gestation), the couple was married. Thankfully, there was no correlation between those two dates, just a convenient time for everyone’s schedule, particularly as it concerned the planner, the venue, the caterers, the band and everything else under the sun. As I write this, only a few days have passed, and while Sam is our third child to be married, she also happens to be the first female. So if we didn’t get this one right, we still have three more chances of orchestrating wedding day bliss! Nine-plus months of planning unfold into a 20-minute ceremony and a four-hour celebration, yet the smiles and memories endure — and that, my friends, is the focal point of your duties as father of the bride.

There are so many options to consider and details to iron out, but the best advice I can share with you is to encourage your daughter and your wife to lean heavily upon friends and those suppliers with whom they will enjoy working to create a timeless, memorable event. There are so many moving parts to the occasionequation that dividing duties among the family is not only smart, it’s essential. I suggest that you focus on the things you know best, which means unless you spent time as a seamstress in your past life, you can steer clear of bridal shops. Take charge of the beverage ordering or catering, the limousine arrangements, the band or disc jockey or perhaps the hotel, but keep in mind you are likely to be overruled at some point during the planning stages. And, if you are trying to limit the number of guests that actually will attend, invite all of your good college friends that PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF LIZ ERIKSON PHOTOGRAPHY

FATHER OF THE BRIDE

live on the West Coast or other continents. All of the above have absolutely nothing to do with the wedding ceremony itself, and I was simply unaware of the emotions present during what was about to unfold. My wife, Maureen, our two sons and our three other daughters descended the sweeping staircase and walked down the aisle. When it was our turn, Samantha latched onto my arm in vise-like fashion with the same trepidation as if she was learning to ride a bike for the first time. I squeezed her arm back, trying to reassure her that I wouldn’t let go and was there to pick her up if she fell. We slowly descended the stairs, and then onto the main floor, with all eyes thankfully fixed upon her. I glanced to my left only to see my sister smiling brightly with tears of joy streaming down her face as we passed. The welcoming smile of the pastor and the memorable glow on Michael’s face as we approached the altar provided me a pleasant calmness. In time, I was asked that question I had heard answered by others nearly a hundred times before, “Who gives this woman to be married to this man?” I gave the answer, placed Samantha’s hand in Michael’s, sauntered to my seat in the first row, and then clutched Maureen’s hand in the same manner that Sam had grabbed my arm just moments earlier. There’s a comfort and strength that comes with abiding love, and its grip lasts for as long as we shall live, if we allow it. During times of separation, we will cherish memories such as these. The exhilaration that comes with being father of the bride is second only to each child’s birth and having the ability to spend at least 18 years with them as we watch them become young women. Thanks be to God for such an opportunity and blessing. PN

DARING DISCOVERIES The most recent example of the Foundation’s success from this pipeline is Orkambi, an important treatment advance for people with two copies of the most common CF mutation. Orkambi improves lung function and significantly reduces the rate of pulmonary exacerbations, which can lead to frequent hospitalizations and accelerated lung disease. Back in July 2015, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the drug for people with CF ages 12 and older who have two copies of the F508del mutation, representing 8,500 people or nearly one-third of the CF population in the country. Nearly half of individuals with CF have two copies of this mutation and could eventually benefit from the therapy. PHOTOS COURTESY OF SHAMROCKIN’ FOR A CURE FACBOOK PAGE

Fun Facts IN THE UNITED STATES:

• About 30,000 people are living with CF (70,000 worldwide).

• Approximately 1,000 new cases of CF are diagnosed each year.

• More than 75 percent of people with CF are diagnosed by age 2.

• Nearly half of the CF population is age 18 or older.

Pam Baker and her husband, Jon, continue to be dedicated to the fight to find a cure, not just a control. With the help from many family members and friends, the Bakers are entering into their 8th year of ShamRockin’ for a Cure, a St. Patrick’s Day themed-party at Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre that raises funds for the Foundation. These new treatments have added years to the lives of those with the disease; however, these treatments are expensive and can place a heavy burden on people with CF and their families. The CFF serves as a hub for information and advice on navigating the daily challenges of living with CF, including ways to help afford and access vital treatments. The Foundation is committed to helping all people with CF get the vital care and treatments they need by connecting them with programs and services that can help them choose health coverage, navigate insurance challenges and afford treatment and care. Since the CFF receives no federal funding, and CF is an orphan — or rare — disease, advancement depends on the generosity of individual donors and corporations to support its lifesaving mission. Across the country, the Foundation has 70 chapters and offices that work diligently with families, friends and supporters within the CF community to raise funds to cure the disease and to provide all people with it the opportunity to lead full, productive lives by

funding research and drug development, promoting individualized treatment and ensuring access to high-quality, specialized care. More than 250,000 dedicated volunteers devote their time and talents to help raise funds for research and medical programs. Together they form the engine that powers the CFF, and their ongoing support makes progress possible. Each year, more than 500 sites across the country host the Foundation’s Great Strides walks, which collectively raise millions of dollars for CF research and care programs. These chapters also host thousands of other special fundraising events year-round, such as dinner dances, galas, golf and fishing tournaments and even parties like Sham-

Rockin’ for a Cure, offering many unique and fulfilling opportunities for supporters to get involved. Even with the extraordinary progress that has been made, finding a cure for all people with CF will require a sustained investment of time, effort and money. Donors and volunteers make the difference in reaching the goal of helping all people with the disease lead long, healthy lives. He wrote beautiful music and spent time in South Africa, but CF forced him to give up that dream. He then used his talents to teach people how to care for their bodies even while he was sick and in and out of the hospital. His sister Renai shared this memory with us. “I not only cry because I miss him, but I cry knowing all the wonderful things that he has done and listening to his voice in my head saying, ‘There is just so much more I have to do, but my lungs wont let me!’ The ShamRockin’ team gained VWUHQJWK IURP ZDWFKLQJ KLV ĆśJKW DQG just knowing him personally. I work out in Fitness Together where Damien was a personal trainer. Every time I get tired or think I can’t do another set, I think of Damien and think how grateful I am to even be able to exercise. My body is healthy. Look at what he achieved while battling CF every day!

kids were healthy like ours. After a couple of years of wishing, we thought there just has to be something more that we can do.” No strangers to hosting parties, the Guineys held a poker party the first year that raised more than $3,000. It added fuel to the fundraising fire and paved the way for bringing their friends and associates together at Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre. Six weeks later, ShamRockin’ for a Cure was born. The brainchild of the Guineys and Bakers, who put together a close-knit, grassroots fundraising event brought friends together to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day and, more importantly, to “eat, drink, and help cure cystic fibrosis.” In its first year, the annual St. Patty’s Day-themed party of 150 guests raised just more than $8,500. Since the inception of ShamRockin’, major strides have been made in the CF community, even coming up with life-changing drugs that were available and distributed as early as September of 2015. “We’re a group of doers, we’re not just idea people,” Mary said, recognizing that wishing and hoping are not effective strategies for success. And though the group is pleased with their achievements, they still strive for more. “How do we measure success?” Pam asked in 2013. “We cure [CF], that’s the success. I get grandchildren.”

What’s next for ShamRockers? After six years of a super successful party in North Fulton, ShamRockin’ for a Cure went national! Branching out to other cities around the country was a vision that the Guineys and Bakers had from the very beginning, so when Carol Reed and Jenny Bessette approached them about taking the ShamRockin’ event to Vermont, — they were beyond excited. In 2015, ShamRockin’ Vermont had an amazing first year raising $24,000 with a sell-out crowd. This year, ShamRockin’ Vermont is being joined by their second sister site in Chicago led by Kellene O’Connell, taking the excitement to the next level. The Atlanta ShamRockin’ committee has team members dedicated to working closely with these new sites using the same techniques that have made ShamRockin’ Atlanta the best St. Patrick’s Day themed party in town. So tell your friends in Vermont and Chicago to get themselves to Shamrockin’ Chicago on Feb. 26 and ShamRockin’ Vermont on March 19. It’s a party they won’t want to miss! Donate Whether you’re getting an early start on spring cleaning or shopping for children, the Roswell United Methodist Church Preschool and Kindergarten (RUMCK)’s semi-annual children’s consignment sale

can help, and in a big way. Held March 4 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and again March 5 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall of the Roswell United Methodist Church on Mimosa Boulevard, this event overflows with more than 200 consignors. Find great prices on gently worn spring and summer children’s clothing and accessories (for newborn to size 14), as well as maternity clothing, baby equipment, nursery décor, play sets, books, DVDs, toys and much more. If you come with the serious shoppers on Friday morning, RUMCK requests that you leave the strollers at home. If you wait until Saturday to see what’s left, many items will be half-off. In addition to benefitting RUMCK, donated items from the sale will be given to The Foster Care Support Foundation, a nonprofit that gives free clothes, toys and safe infantcare equipment to nearly 3,000 children in the state. Visit rumc.com/rumck to register to consign or volunteer.

house in historic Alpharetta. Their combined knack for playful style, repurposing furniture, floral arrangements and vinyl personalization now fills the shop, making it an easy stop to find great gifts. Months later, their small section devoted to clothing and accessories was overcrowded, so with the help of Jodi Grutadaurio, they expanded to another building a few steps behind their first storefront. Now open, the Boutique at Olde South Charm blends comfort and luxury with popular items such as cozy blanket scarves, hot-selling Juls Candles, Article of Society denim and their own handmade jewelry line dubbed “Poor Little Rich Girl.” The best part is, with their affordable prices, you don’t actually have to be a wealthy gal to get the luxury look here. We think supporting local businesses sounds good, but after a walk through the boutique with the business savvy ladies, we know it feels good, too. Stop by to say hello at 348B South Main Street and like them at facebook.com/ oldesouthcharm before your next birthday, bridal shower or simple Saturday.

After THOUGHTS

This month, we fell in love with the thought of heirlooms, so we’ve decided to share a few of our own that are near and dear to our hearts.

“I reupholstered a 1950s couch from my grandmother’s house and it’s now one of our favorite pieces of furniture — not to mention a conversation starter.” Heather KW Brown, Editor

“I inherited the hall tree that was in my grandmother’s foyer in her 1900s farmhouse. I don’t think it is an old piece — probably something she purchased in her later years, but I have so many memories of seeing it there when we would visit.” Shannah J. Smith, Senior Art Director

“I have an old wicker rocking chair that my grandfather used to sit on the front porch and rock in every afternoon after tending to the farm. My mom took the entire set and recovered the cushions to put on her back porch. After she died, my sister and I split up the set and I kept one chair. After so many decades of rocking, the runners have worn and flattened out. I can still hear and see my grandfather on that old porch whenever I sit in the chair.” Tiffany Willard, Chief Operating Officer
