32 EMERALD COAST CUISINE

Most people stop when they reach a finish line, but not three-time Ironman Triathlon finisher and father of three, David Shoulberg. Combining his passion for sports and children, he looked at the finishing stretch as a new beginning. Spin over to read how he changed gears to change lives.

Turning over a new shell, so to speak, chef-centric restaurants from Rosemary Beach to Fort Walton are refuting the time-honored tradition of serving an updated version of the Fisherman’s Platter.

23 HOT SPOTS FOR SUMMER We’ve dug our toes into a few sandy stops you’ll love. Whether it’s a peaceful ferry ride to North Carolina’s scenic Bald Head Island, an adventure-packed excursion to Alabama’s Gulf Coast or a well-deserved day at the spa in Florida’s St. Andrews Bay, vacation awaits!

54 FINDING A TOP PHYSICIAN Curious what characteristics separate a good doctor from a great one? We posed questions of our own to a panel of six health care professionals. Read on to see if you already have - or need to find - a top physician.

You have the latest issue of Points North Atlanta in one hand ... but what about the other? Cool inspiration can be found in our newly added Summertime Sips. Starting this month and continuing throughout the summer, we’re sharing recipes for a few of our favorite ice-cold drinks. Cheers!

MY OLD MAN AND

Summer is my

the sea Our June issue starts with a local father that, like most, has made an impact on the lives of his children, but also turned his passion into a fundraiser that affects many more. From there, we head toward three beaches that have become our happy places, and then tour the Emerald Coast, which dishes plenty of its own reasons to be beach bound. And so, as the tide rolls in, bringing another summer within reach, may it also bring waves of memories to keep long after it rolls out. A thank you to my own dad is a summer too late, but he knew, without a doubt, how much my old man and the sea mean to me. Happy Father’s Day to all of the dads out there!

favorite season. It’s as if the beach somehow slows down Father Time, providing more hours of fun in the sun. And whether randomly tossed together like overstuffed beach bags or purposefully packed like steady sandcastles, the memories of my youth are tied to summer. On the beach in 1978, I caught a “whale.” Technically, it was a baby sand shark … stuck in a tidal pool, but as some amount of skill must have been involved, I count it. My first real catch came years later when my dad took me surf fishing. I hopped in the back of his truck for the short drive and still recall how excited I was when he drove on the beach right to the water. He baited the hook and cast the line, but I was in charge of reeling in dinner. I’m not sure who was more thrilled with that first tug on the line nor does the number of fish we caught come to mind. What I remember is a fun day with dad.

for Lisa Moore to officially pursue a career as a professional artist. Now, she spends her days winning awards for capturing and preserving moments on canvas full time. With a penchant for horses, figures and rural imagery, Moore is inspired by scenes of classical Southern charm that express the emotions of daily life. Born and raised in northwest Georgia, she seeks to capture the “quiet grace” of the South she knew as a young girl. The subtle elegance of figures at rest and dream-like impressions of horses in motion are Moore’s ways of reminding her audience about the beauty of the surrounding world. “Rush,” on display at Taylor Kinzel Gallery in Roswell, depicts a horse in motion, its movement captured in fluid brushstrokes. Founded in 2003, Taylor Kinzel Gallery represents a diverse collection of art from nationally recognized and emerging contemporary Southern artists. The gallery is located in historic Roswell and is open Tuesday through Saturday 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday 1 to 5 p.m. In addition to art exhibits, they offer special events, such as artist demonstrations, show openings and open houses. Mementos Frozen in Time Behind every personal artifact, souvenir, token or old photograph is a personal story drawn from a fond memory, event or moment in time that’s begging to be shared, discussed and appreciated with others. Points North Atlanta freelance writer Amber Lanier Nagle has done just that, turning a pastime close to her heart into a collection of inspired stories for her book, “Project Keepsake.” The Georgia native chronicles the journey of invaluable keepsakes along with writers Renea Winchester, Audrey Lanier Andersen, Bob Wright, Carmen Slaughter and Anne Elizabeth Cowan. Told through the lens of those who revere their precious sentiments, each of the 55 stories is a firsthand account. In addition to these stories, we love the section that helps readers write their own keepsake stories. If you keep every papered treasure or cherished relic to capture those moments of days gone by and how they affected your life, you’ll find comfort in the pages of “Project Keepsake.” The anthology gives each of these mementos new life and meaning. Creative

Pay close attention, avid readers. You may have just met (or raised) the next New York Times best-selling author — especially after a week at Barrington Hall’s third annual Kids Can Write creative writing camps in Roswell. Campers trade backpacks for pens, pencils, notebooks and brainpower in this weeklong creativity adventure filled with inspiring and interactive playtime, skills workshops and group classes. The camp counselor is children’s book author Mary Ann Rodman, an award-winning local writer and teacher, known best for her books, “First Grade Stinks!” “Yankee Girl” and “Jimmy’s Stars.” She opens three sessions to kids ages 10 to 14 on June 16, June 23 and July 14. Each session is $250 per child and limited to the first 12 registrants, so put your own pen to paper and set your future novelists on their Pulitzer path. wbrowning@roswellgov.com

FEAST ON FICTION

Patti Callahan Henry’s latest novel “The Stories We Tell” dives into deep, dark family tensions that ignite after a Savannah power couple’s daughter gets into a mysterious car accident. The unraveling of a family’s trust in each other — not to mention their reputation among city socialites — is what follows, taking us on a fantastic journey through Southern-bred truth telling, courtesy of one of our most beloved authors. Henry’s book hits Atlanta bookshelves this month alongside fellow writer Carolyn O’Neil in tow with “The Slim Down South Cookbook,” her new collection of recipes with help from Southern Living. Both authors want readers to sink their teeth in right away, so they’ll be at Lucky’s Burger & Brew in Brookhaven on June 24 to eat, drink, sign books and meet fellow foodie and fiction fans. patticallahanhenry.com; carolynoneil.com

When One Door Closes … We Eat! Atlanta-favorite Chequers Seafood + Steak said goodbye to its 31-year-old Dunwoody doors last month, but to the delight of loyal patrons, opened brand-new ones in East Cobb within two weeks. Now, Chef James Dennerline invites diners to enjoy the same seven-day service and Sunday brunch from his relocated kitchen, still firing up favorites like the char-crusted Ahi tuna and his famous USDA prime bone-in ribeye. New space also means new ideas, so the guys on the line introduced a new menu item, a succulent and hearty maple plank roasted salmon which patrons can enjoy inside the new semi-private area, with seating for more than 100, or (since it’s summer and all) on the outdoor, covered patio with room for 65 of your closest friends and family. The new Johnson Ferry Road location only improves the city’s longtime staple for good seafood and great cuts, now just minutes up the road. chequersseafood.com PHOTO COURTESY OF CHEQUERS SEAFOOD + STEAK

A CURE TOMORROW STARTS TODAY A better chance of finding a cure for childhood cancer in our lifetime? Sign us up. And do it with CURE Childhood Cancer, an organization whose motto is just that, as they raise funds for research and support to find a cure. They know that the future for curing children with cancer rests in the hands of doctors and researchers who are being trained right now, so CURE works to fully fund two pediatric oncology fellows at Atlanta’s Emory University School of Medicine. Drumroll please. This year’s fellows (and tomorrow’s miracle workers) are Dr. Jonathan Metts and Dr. David Siegel, both employees at the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center of Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. Taking it a step further, CURE sets up annual events for parents and families who need support and healing after the tragic loss of a child to various types of the disease. Earlier this year, CURE held a special reunion for families to gather, share memories and join a candlelight vigil. Obviously, fundraisers are a big part of CURE’s quest to cure childhood cancer and there is still time to get in on the game. On June 7 take a peek into an airplane hangar at the Taste of Speed VIP Jet Port Charity Gala. You’ll enjoy up-close-andpersonal views of the world’s most unique brands of luxury transportation. ccording to Merriam-Webster, a distributor is a person or company that supplies stores or businesses with goods. United Distributors, Inc. doesn’t just fit this bill, they’re one of Atlanta’s top 25 privately held companies and the largest alcohol beverage wholesaler in Georgia and Alabama. However, when I met David Shoulberg, the company’s vice president of sales and marketing, I was reminded of the second definition of the word: a device that sends electricity to the spark plugs of an engine. Vice President is just one title to Shoulberg’s name. Additionally as Husband, Dad, Board Member for Camp Twin Lakes, three-time Ironman Triathlon Finisher and DJ Shalom, the multi-talented Shoulberg is the connecting point for many people and ideas. He was also the initial spark behind Spin For Kids, an annual bike race that has raised $2.5 million for the camp since 2006. Despite how often Shoulberg changes gears daily, he transfers the same electricity into each, creating an unmatched passion that extends well beyond the finish line.

Points North | June 2014 | pointsnorthatlanta.com

Raising the Bar When it comes to juggling all those titles, where does one start? Appropriately for Shoulberg, one thing simply leads to another. You could even say one person leads to another, as Shoulberg learned from United’s CEO and President Doug Hertz. After volunteering with Camp Sunshine, a free retreat for children with life-threatening illnesses and their families, Hertz realized hospital-based programs for special needs groups lacked adequate facilities to hold their camps. To fill that gap, Hertz founded Camp Twin Lakes (CTL) in 1991. As the first fully-accessible overnight camp, CTL is what Shoulberg calls a “Taj Mahal” of summer camps, complete with a state-of-the-art medical lodge, and a wheelchair-friendly tree house and pool. Now in its 22nd season, CTL has expanded to two other campuses in Winder and Warm Springs, offering yearround programs that serve more than 9,100 campers from nearly 60 different organizations. Hertz stated that the growth and expansion

would not have been possible without the leadership, energy and commitment of so many dedicated people like Shoulberg, who got on board as a junior member in 1995 after he joined United. About this same time, Shoulberg was cultivating a hobby for cycling. Knowing the type of healing that happens at camp is different than the healing that occurs in a hospital bed, the self-described kid at heart found a way to eventually combine the two. The result was Spin for Kids, an annual, premier cycling event that raises money to help send kids to CTL. Rather than another black-tie gala or fancy dinner, Shoulberg wanted a fundraiser that the children would enjoy. The fully-supported bike race takes place at the camp’s original location in Rutledge, Ga., and winds through the rolling hills of beautiful Morgan County. As riders return, they are invited to join in camp festivities including food, beverages, live entertainment and a chance to explore, allowing par-

ticipants to become advocates, or what Shoulberg calls camp “ambassadors.” Last year, the event rolled in 835 bikers that pedaled 5, 27, 47, 67 or 100 miles, and raised more than $429,000. That sent 537 kids to camp for an entire week, so mark your calendars now for the 2014 race, held on October 19. Miles Ahead A penchant for sports and an intense drive to succeed are the norms, not the exceptions, for Shoulberg, who remembers much of the same growing up in the suburbs of Philadelphia. “I was a very determined long distance runner [and] worked very hard to be competitive,” he said, adding, “I could hold my own, but I did not have a lick of talent. Every medal or honor I earned came from hard work.” There’s little doubt that whether endurance racing

In the Shoulberg’s Buckhead household, however, it’s not all about sports and individual achievements. Crediting his wife and her family’s philanthropic history as his biggest motivator to “do good,” Shoulberg has made giving back to the community a family affair and has simultaneously made a name for himself instilling the same values in his daughters.

was in Shoulberg’s future or not, determination and diligence have defined him from even the earliest years. When asked what inspired him to tackle such a huge challenge like Ironman Triathlon competitions, he said, “I always loved watching the competition on ABC Wide World of Sports when I was a kid … [and] stumbled on this event live in Hawaii in 2001.” “I wanted something on my life’s resumé that I could look back on and say, ‘If I can finish an Ironman, there is not anything I cannot accomplish.’” With three official Ironman finish lines (an Ironman distance is 2.4 miles of swimming, 112 miles biking and 26.2 miles running, totaling almost 422 racing miles, not including the number of training miles) plus a little encouragement on the homefront, Shoulberg said it was time to retire. “One day my wife said she had a new triathlon she wanted me to register for: Carly, Jordan and Casey.” Being on the sidelines while their three daughters, respectively now 16, 13 and 11 excel in their own lives has brought the proud father in him to the forefront. Citing a few of his favorites, Shoulberg said, “How hard [Carly] works and her passion for being the best in the classroom; Casey trains 20 to 24 hours a week in the gym to be the best gymnast she can be; and Jordan has become a charismatic actress. Watching her in school plays and [performances] at the Woodruff Arts Center has been unbelievable.”

Points North | June 2014 | pointsnorthatlanta.com

Crossing the Finish Line Enter DJ Shalom. Shoulberg’s rapping alter ego, named after the Hebrew word for peace, made its debut in a rap video for his oldest daughter’s Bat Mitzvah montage, but the idea dates back decades. “I always wanted to be a hip hop rap star growing up. My dream was becoming a member of Run DMC,” he admitted. “When we created the first rap video for Carly’s montage, I showed it to one of my customers. As he was dying laughing about how funny it was, he started calling me DJ Shalom.” As part of Jordan’s Bat Mitzvah community service project, DJ Shalom returned. While some may write a form letter with their request and send it out to family and friends, this father-daughter duo found inspiration from a video about an Olympic gymnast during the 2012 summer games in London, set to “The Fighter” by Gym Class Heroes. Jordan and DJ Shalom made their own YouTube video with request for Spin For Kids donations set to a musical remix of the same song with video footage from the camp (search online for “The Fighters by Jordan Shoulberg” and you can see their lyrical finesse). They spent three days filming the video before sending the link to donors. The first check came from a friend: an astounding $7,500. Jordan completed her project with a donation of more than $46,000. In true Shoulberg fashion, he continues to not only be a top fundraiser but also to raise the bar on his family’s involvement. A video for 2014 is already in the works with a fundraising goal of $500,000. Talk about pedaling an untameable passion into a cause that everyone can spin off of. PN

TAKING TIME TO

COA ST BALD HEAD ISLAND TRANSPORTS VISITORS TO AN UNRIVALED BEACH EXPERIENCE { WRITTE N BY HE ATHE R K W B R OW N }

WHITE SAND THAT SQUISHES SOFTLY BETWEEN EAGER TOES. Driftwood picket fences draped strategically across untouched dunes. Restaurants, shops and maybe a market or two nestled neighborly along the island. As the beaches of my past started to blend together, the perfectionist in me craved more. Daring myself to find a tranquil escape that transcended its peers, I packed my brood and set my sights on Bald Head Island, a remote but well-dressed resort and residential community accessible only by ferry off the North Carolina coast. A Family's Best Friend Several action-packed days exploring Wilmington, Wrightsville Beach and neighboring Carolina Beach drifted behind us as a ferry filled with bins of our belongings pulled away from the dock. Floating on the horizon, a lighthouse lured us closer to what the locals call “turtle time,” due no doubt, to the loggerhead turtles that nest on the beach and the slow pace at which life is celebrated on Bald Head Island (BHI).

24

Points North | June 2014 | pointsnorthatlanta.com

This land of no fast lanes is reserved for golf carts, bikes and your own two feet — no cars allowed on the island. And that was exactly what my family needed: an excuse to relax and enjoy the journey, starting with a short 20-minute ferry ride from Deep Point Marina in Southport, N.C. From the terminal on BHI, we boarded a tram loaded with our luggage and watched more scenery scoot past as a porter drove us to a beautiful, two-story

rental overlooking the harbor on one side and beachfront on the other. Excited to call it home, even temporarily, I flung the sliding glass doors open and sprinted onto the sand, my arms outstretched as if running toward a long lost love. Mixed among the crashing waves were high-pitched squeals in the distance. Realizing my children were laughing hysterically, I turned just as our 6-month-old puppy pounced. Barely settled, our experience had already surpassed beach trips of years past, and now we could share it with the newest addition of our family. Here, dogs ride on the ferry and in a seat on the golf cart. And here, sandy breezes whip wildly through their hair just as often as their human counterparts, engaging two- and four-legged friends alike in tireless games of tag until the sun dips behind the dunes.

O N LI N E E XC LU S I V E : This month, we’ve got even more great North Carolina beaches that will lure you into vacation mode. Read about Wilmington and Carolina Beach at pointsnorthatlanta.com

An Old Lighthouse and New Lifestyle Having decided that doing nothing at the beach technically qualified as doing something, I had also come to the conclusion that we could not leave the island without climbing Old Baldy. Commissioned by Thomas Jefferson and built in 1817, North Carolina’s oldest standing lighthouse is a must visit. Featuring 14 miles of pristine beach, marsh and an ancient maritime forest, the island is only 3 miles in length, so finding our way around proved simple, plus towering at 110 feet, the landmark lighthouse is impossible to miss. Trusting that “it’s only 108 steps to the top,” my husband and I tried to corral the children (or catch our breath, whichever sounds best) by listening to the audio tour on each of the five landings. The climb is steep but well worth squeezing into the lan-

tern room at the very top for an incredible panoramic view of the island. From here, we spotted Delphina, the new world cantina that surprised everyone at our table with creative menu items like the aguacates al fresco, an appetizer made with half an avocado, crab salad, lettuce and roasted red pepper sauce. Our entire meal was so amazing, we vowed to work up another appetite and go back. We biked to the other side of the island in search of the oceanfront Shoals Club, which offers beach access, pools and volleyball courts while The Bald Head Island Club touts croquet, tennis, pool and the $4.5-million, 18-hole golf course by awardwinning architect Tim Cate that winds its way over dunes, around lagoons, along the ocean and through the maritime forest. Both clubs are available to guests with temporary membership.

Other options for burning calories on Bald Head Island, which earned its name from early river pilots who referenced its “bald” headland as a landmark leading to the mouth of the Cape Fear River, include nature-themed programs offered by the Bald Head Island Conservancy, a GPS scavenger hunt, a leisurely stroll along the M. Kent Mitchell Nature Trail, surf fishing, and plenty of popular water sports through the Sail Shop. Double decker cones from Sandpiper’s Coffee and Ice Cream in hand, my family debated our next move as Mother Nature’s playground beckoned. We chose to sit still and enjoy it. The perfectionist was finally pleased. PN

PAT H ALABAMA’S GULF COAST IS KING FOR FAMILY VACATIONS { WRITTE N BY JE N N I F E R C O LO S I MO }

BEFORE STIR-CRAZY KIDS AND BASEBALL SEASON TAKE OVER your household, hit the road for the Gulf Coast. In fact, with the myriad of activities and entertainment that Alabama’s Gulf Coast offers, Northsiders should leave tomorrow. The sparkling waters of Gulf Shores and Orange Beach make for the ultimate beach vacation. It’s a rare place, where whether sunny and hot or cloudy and cool, there’s something to do, places to eat and a view worth clearing your schedule to see. Rarer still is a clean, classic beach town looking forward to nothing more than hosting metro Atlantans. Where to Eat Small-town stays are famous for the real family recipes lining menus along the coast. We love the fried shrimp and french fries at Doc’s Seafood Shack & Oyster Bar. They might come piled on Styrofoam plates, but at first bite you know you’re in seafood heaven. The best thing about the beach, for me and my husband, is watching the sun set and your cocktails multiply, so we hit

26

Points North | June 2014 | pointsnorthatlanta.com

The Gulf for Bloody Marys, burgers and a surprisingly tasty homemade hummus snack. Tucked right on the coast before you hit the bridge to Florida, this spot mimics the area’s namesake and won't encourage sharing your grub. We came straight from the beach in tees and flops, but plenty of people made it a stop on the way to dinner. Laid back with high spirits, this is the way to kiss a well-spent beach day good-bye. A weekend trip means limited meal-

time opportunities, but no matter how many days you stay, make sure you find a spot on the patio at Shipp’s Harbour Grille for the city’s best Ponchartrain sauce. We savored the buttery crab and shrimp goodness atop coconut-crusted grouper, but it comes on many different smother-worthy dishes. If you’re looking for something a little fancier, the new, modern and bustling Fisher’s Upstairs is your supreme whitetablecloth-style beach bite. Go big with the fork-filling, mammoth stuffed flounder or simmering bowl of shrimp and okra gumbo. Where to Play Whether it’s fair-skinned friends or a dreary day on the sand, opportunities to sacrifice sun for fun await. Starting the day at The Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo provides a little hands-on zoology that’s fun for travelers of all ages. Passionate about

animals and a fireball of personality, zoo owner Patti Hall recently landed in the spotlight when Animal Planet’s “The Little Zoo That Could” told the story of how she loaded up all of her zookeepers, their families and the extensive group of animals (including lions, tigers and bears) to hunker down at her house during Hurricane Ivan. Back at the zoo, which feels more like a neighborhood animal park, Hall wants guests to have a more hands-on approach. If you see her there, Hall just might let you snuggle a baby kangaroo in your arms or (if you’re up for it) let a lemur use your body as a jungle gym. Higher adrenaline adventure awaits at The Gulf Adventure Center at Gulf State Park, where trained pros can get you standing on paddleboards, flying through the air on Hummingbird Ziplines or riding low in a kayak. A REFUGE BY T H E BAY

HISTORIC ST. ANDREWS OFFERS SMALL-TOWN CHARM ON THE OUTSKIRTS OF PANAMA CITY BEACH { WRITTE N BY B R E HUMPHR I E S }

IT WAS THE TAGLINE PRINTED ON THE WINDOW THAT LURED me into St. Andrews Coffee House: “A Neighborhood Gathering Place.” The adage proved true, as the few patrons left lingering over breakfast were neighborhood regulars, indeed, and the woman behind the counter excused herself from the small talk to take my order. The “Huge, Hot Cinnamon Roll” on the “Naughty But Nice” breakfast menu caught my eye, but knowing it would spoil my lunch, I stuck with iced coffee. As I waited for my order, I took in the simple but welcoming atmosphere of the space, once a grocery and later a pharmacy before opening as a coffee house in 1998. According to a history lesson on the shop’s website, the owners have been working within these walls for four generations, seeking to provide a refuge where patrons can return to a slower pace of life. It’s a common goal in Historic Downtown St. Andrews, which is experiencing a return to its former economic prosperity after losing business to nearby Panama City

Beach in the ‘80s. Now, the charming waterfront town seems to serve as the antithesis to all those towering developments and tourist traps, offering an authentic sense of community that is as refreshing as the salty breeze blowing off the bay. As I stepped into the late morning sun, that very breeze drew my attention to the coast, where I passed a Mommy & Me yoga class under a canopy of oaks before strolling down the boardwalk to the water’s edge. On Saturday mornings, the community comes to life with a year-round

farmers market, bringing a variety of local produce, handmade jewelry, art and sundries to town, but an assorted offering of merchants and restaurants offer much to explore on any day of the week. There’s a gallery of local art at Bay Art & Frame, vintage treasures at Bayview Antiques, fashionable finds at BOT Boutique, more coffee and treats at Chez Amavida, 70 wines by the glass at The Purple Grape, seafood and cold beer at Hunt’s Oyster Bar, and oh, so much more. Visitors who want to immerse themselves in St. Andrews’ charm can stay in quaint cottages at the Azalea Court Inn, but to satisfy our beach cravings, my clan and I chose to settle at Bay Point. Offering a variety of condos and hotel rooms in two separate properties — Bay Point Wyndham Resort and Sterling Resorts’ Reflections at Bay Point, all with bay or golf course

views, Bay Point is the perfect respite for families that want the beach experience while remaining on the outskirts of PCB’s crazy crowds. Guests at both Bay Point Wyndham and Reflections have access to two championship golf courses, a private beach, resort pool, water sports, several onsite restaurants and a full-service spa. In an area better known for tattoo parlors than S T I L L H U N G RY ? We know the sun and sand (and spa) can really work up an appetite, so we scoped even farther outside the city limits for more palate pleasers. What we found was the family-owned, and still operated, Thomas Donut & Snack Shop. An easy 20-minute drive down Front Beach Road gets you in line for a five-star morning starter of hot bacon, egg and cheese biscuits or a dozen of their famous blueberry cake doughnuts. thomasdonutandsnackshop.com

pampering, Serenity Spa comes as the greatest surprise, and I could have spent an entire day losing myself in the tranquility of its luxurious treatments. Be sure to arrive early for your spa service to enjoy the sauna, steam room, whirlpool and complimentary glass of wine, or go all out with a spa package combining the best in massage therapy, skin care, nail and hair services. Reuniting with my family after the spa, we headed to Pelican’s Bar and Grill, a water-bound, open-air beach bar accessible via a boardwalk from the main property. We snagged a table just in time to watch the sun sink over the water, setting the sky ablaze in orange and pink as we noshed on fish tacos (and margaritas for mom and dad). Reflections also offers shuttle service to nearby Shell Island, an undeveloped, 700-acre barrier island perfect for snor-

keling, shell collecting and dolphin sightings. Being a boating family, we had come prepared for our own private island outing, so we packed a picnic and set sail for a day. At the end of the day, we navigated back into Historic St. Andrews, docking at the marina for dinner at Uncle Ernie’s Bayfront Grill and Brew House. Located in a two-story, circa-1800s home, Uncle Ernie’s is hands-down our favorite spot for dinner in this area, thanks to a line-up of live entertainment, a selection of homemade beers, and the best crab cakes we’ve ever tasted. After dinner, we took one last stroll through St. Andrews, marveling once again at the unexpected small-town charm of this seaside community.

Coastal CUISINE { WRITTEN BY CARL DANBURY }

T

he days of the Fisherman’s Platter are numbered. Not too long ago, when tourists ventured to the Emerald Coast’s beaches from 30-A to Fort Walton Beach, the tempting morsels from the Gulf of Mexico were dipped in batter, fried to a crisp, golden brown, and served with french fries or a loaded baked potato. While you can find many restaurants that still serve this type of fare (leaving some of us inhaling furiously come swimsuit time), the restaurant renaissance along the Gulf Coast has been in full swing for quite some time, and noteworthy chefs, intriguing cuisine and expanding craft beverage lists are as plentiful as the sand dollars.

32

Points North | June 2014 | pointsnorthatlanta.com

Points North Atlanta consulted with a team of three beach locals and quickly discovered that narrowing our hopeful list to just the 10 top restaurants from Rosemary Beach to Fort Walton was a fool’s errand. Demetrius Fuller, music director of Florida’s Sinfonia Gulf Coast and gourmand, Tracy Louthain, old friend and public relations specialist, and Demetria McNeese, owner of McNeese Distributing, a boutique wine distribution company in Destin, joined forces to provide some on-the-ground due diligence during our last two visits. The lesson we learned? Even though vacation after vacation will promise that you’ll never have to eat at the same place twice, it’s okay if you want to.

THE BAY { Santa Rosa Beach } To say Chef Jim Shirley is an icon would almost minimize his influence on the restaurant scene from Pensacola to the Emerald Coast. He is a co-owner of Great Southern Restaurants, which owns The Fish House, The Fish House Deck Bar and Atlas Oyster House in Pensacola. He’s also coowner of the Great Southern Cafe in Seaside, and recently unveiled his latest catch, The Bay, which sits at the southern foot of the Highway 331 bridge. His menu features Gulf seafood and sushi, a 12-draft beer system, an excellent wine list, intriguing cocktails and live music on weekends. But it’s the menu boasting interesting interpretations that put this spot on our list, like the Faux Ya Ya, Shirley’s take on shrimp and grits. Grilled polenta cakes with smoked Fontina and Romano cheese are topped with a sauté of pancetta and prosciutto, crimini mushrooms, arugula and cream adorned with spiced shrimp. If you’ve got room, sink your teeth into the rave-reviewed lobster sandwich with lime-tarragon marinade. Sushi fans should order the Bay Roll or the customer favorite, the Hapa Haole Roll. baysouthwalton.com

BOSHAMPS SEAFOOD AND OYSTER HOUSE { Destin } THE BAY} CAFÉ { Fort Walton Beach

Since 1983, the unassuming café with a lovely view of Santa Rosa Sound has been enticing guests with fabulous French and rustic European fare. Open for lunch and dinner seven days a week, Chef Julien Lorant thrills guests with an authentic preparation of steak au poivre, Duck Montmorency and chicken Florentine, but he truly shines with his interpretative recipes utilizing the coast’s fresh fish and shellfish. His grouper Wellington is wrapped in pastry and served with a decadent lobster sauce, his amberjack comes in a classic Meuniere and the shrimp scampi Provencale is sautéed with fresh tomatoes, garlic and white wine. In the culture of big, modern, table-turning and often over-the-top options, The Bay Café offers an escape to old world charm with a welcomed, unhurried pace. baycafewaterfront.com

For 17 years, Allen and Dee Dee Phillips provided locals and tourists one of the area’s best fine dining restaurants at Flamingo Café. Now the next generation of Phillips bring back their family’s delicious legacy, opening Boshamps in 2013, with a stunning view of Destin Harbor and likely one of the best locations around for al fresco, coastal dining. Complete with a multi-tier deck, a renovated beach and volleyball court and live music, Boshamps has created a stir with its patrons. Chef Andi Bell’s menu features oysters prepared in countless ways, like our favorite, the Oysters Boshamp that come baked with caramelized Vidalia onions, Feta and house-made bacon marmalade. “The Original” Snapper Destin is a palate revelation that combines jumbo lump crab, Gulf shrimp, mashed red early potatoes, braised local greens, lemon butter Béarnaise sauce and honey roasted nuts. Pair that with the barbequed local butterbeans and you’ve got the reason we included this new spot on our must-list. boshamps.com THIS PAGE: PHOTOS COURTESY OF BOSHAMPS; FOLLOWING PAGE: PHOTOS COURTESY OF CUVEE BISTRO

Speaking of side dishes, Miller, Ashley and manager Nicky Harvill also conceived one of the most intriguing ideas on the Emerald Coast. Destin Ice & Tackle (DIT) is a floating general store and bait shop, moored northeast of the Destin Bridge near Crab Island. Stocked with a wide array of tackle, live bait, frozen bait, drinks, snacks and miscellaneous convenience items, the 30-by-50-foot marvel provides a welcomed reprieve for anyone short on supplies while on the water. The first of its kind, DIT is no floating relic. Beautifully designed and constructed, patrons can dock their boats, grab their supplies and get back to the fun quickly. destiniceandtackle.com

CAFÉ THIRTY-A { } Seagrove Beach

A mainstay since 1995, this alluring haunt serves up some of the area’s finest and most creative cuisine. Executive Chef Ken Duenas demonstrates an uncommon panache with his use of complementary sauces and spices that thrill the palate. White wine curry coconut cream broth complements the mussels, blood orange or bacon vinaigrette seasons two of his salads, vanilla rum butter sauce makes his almond crusted snapper absolutely sinful and roasted poblano sauce is a nice addition to the wood-oven roasted grouper. He even serves up a piece of home for us with a beautiful grilled Georgia quail, creamy grits and sage fritters. Try the panseared diver scallops served with lobster quinoa, petite vegetables, citrus buerre blanc and chimichurri, or the Maine Lobster in Paradise. It certainly beats a cheeseburger. The wine list is deep and offers an array of excellent vintages. cafethirtya.com

CUVEE BISTRO { Destin } Celebrity Chef Tim Creehan has thrilled tourists and locals alike for many years in the Destin area, and while Cuvee Bistro’s award-winning wine list orchestrated by sommelier-partner Pamela Wellborn, its extraordinarily popular happy hour and house band Space Junkie all combine to attract patrons, Creehan’s Cuvee cuisine steals the show. Regular menu items like Creehan’s famous smoked tomato and shrimp soup, his signature black

pepper yellowfin tuna, seared and served with braised spinach and ginger soy sauce and Grouper Vince (for Vince Gill), pecan crusted and served with honey Worcestershire and mashed Yukon Gold potato cake are incredible, particularly “If You Ever Have Forever In Mind.” Save room for dessert and share a slice of the decadent white chocolate banana cream pie with caramel sauce. cuveebistrodestin.com

Executive Chef Brian Murray has a passion for good food and creating an impeccable dining experience with elegance reflected in even the smallest detail. The setting is unsurpassed, the service is topnotch and the menu features Murray’s mouth-watering, Gulf-inspired cuisine. Roasted black grouper, steamed red snapper, diver scallops and the should-be-world-famous Florida cioppino are just some of the highlights. Also open for breakfast and lunch, this restaurant is the perfect choice for any time of day. watercolorresort.com

GEORGE’S AT ALYS BEACH Opened in 2008 by notable restaurateurs Ann and George Hartley, this spot is the perfect place for sharing. Guests can get started with the signature lobster quesadilla, crispy Gulf crab fritters or Chef Gregg’s (Smith) Southern short ribs. After that, the experience is infamous for making diners choose to behave or misbehave with their entrée selections. Behave with the wood grilled catch of the day, Pollo San Miguel, jerk crusted snapper or bronzed sea scallops. Misbehave with Señora Anna’s fried grouper tacos, Kona-crusted New York strip or the yellow pepper pappardelle with basil pesto parmesan and a side of grits du jour. For this second kind of diner, the dessert menu includes George’s famous key lime pie and peanut butter chocolate ganache topped with caramelized bacon popcorn. georgesatalysbeach.com

RUTH’S CHRIS STEAK HOUSE { Destin } Sometimes we yield to restaurants that are part of a national brand because they offer something exemplary. Such is the case with Ruth’s Chris in Destin. First of all, the aesthetic appeal of this location is second to none, from the extraordinary Wine Room to the Courtyard Bar and the newly renovated East Bar, this location exudes warmth and intimacy. Todd Reber and John Jacob opened Vin’tij in 1998. Open seven days a week for lunch and dinner, the pair created a loyal following that appreciates the complementary aspects of how wine and cuisine interact. Jacob built his menu around seasonal ingredients and fresh catches, providing his guests with what he once called, “unpretentious comfort food.” Tourists gravitate to Jacob’s popular pan-fried oyster B.L.T. or the fresh catch of the day, while the locals – who visit several times in a week – opt for his intriguing daily specials. Reber navigates every menu choice for his staff and the guests to select wines that pair best. Plus, his six-flight, 24-bottle tasting offers a complete education on his in-house repertoire. What you won’t find is a bottle list, and for good reason, because lunch and dinner guests can peruse and purchase wines - to take home or enjoy on premise - from the retail boutique to the left of the entrance. The wine list changes nearly as often as the menu, which means Vin’tij is the perfect venue to explore wine and fine cuisine. vintij.com PN

to GOOD GREAT Health Care Professionals Discuss Characteristics of the Best Physicians { WRITTEN BY AMB E R L AN I E R N AG L E }

A

few weeks ago, my sister called

and asked me two interesting questions: Do you like your family practitioner? Would you recommend him? “Absolutely! Yes! I adore my doctor — he’s great!” I answered immediately, and then I started a long, emphatic testimonial, as if I were Dr. Sullivan’s publicity manager or press agent. During my monologue, I used words like “smart,” “logical,” “listens,” and “respectful.” Afterward, I realized I had not uttered the words “qualified” or “well-trained” — not even once. The conversation with my sister made me ponder the factors and characteristics that set the great doctors apart from the good ones. Web sites rating and ranking doctors crowd the Internet. On these lists, medical professionals earn the title of “top docs” based on surveys filled out by their medical peers, so we posed our questions to a panel of six local doctors, nurses and health care professionals. We asked the following: What do you look for when considering a doctor to oversee the care of your own family? And, in your opinion, what qualities do the very best doctors possess?

STRONG EDUCATION AND TRAINING The Georgia Composite Medical Board provides free access to searchable database listings profiling Georgia’s 41,000 licensed medical professionals including which school they attended, when and where they completed their residency training, any specialty board certifications, disciplinary actions, criminal offenses and medical malpractice judgments. Mike Lipscomb, MD, an emergency room doctor at North Fulton Hospital and a physician with Apollo MD, believes that doctors at the top of their fields have solid educational and training foundations to draw upon as they practice medicine. But Lipscomb also offered a warning. “I wouldn’t put much weight on the big-name schools,” he explained, noting that tuition expenses at these elite schools can reach more than $50,000 per year, making them unrealistic options for many medical students. “Many state schools are less than a third of this,” he continued. “High price doesn’t correlate to a better education. Some of the best physicians I know went to large state universities for school, and they made the choice to come out with as little debt as possible.” “And I wouldn’t put much stock in research,” he said. “Being good in the lab doesn’t necessarily correlate to being clinically competent.”

"Being good in the lab doesn't necessarily correlate to being clinically competent." MIKE LIPSCOMB, MD at North Fulton Hospital and physician with Apollo MD

APPLYING EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE

"Experience plays a key role when the need is more technical in nature or when decisions need to be made quickly in an emergency situation." ADEDAPO ODETOYINBO, MD, SFHM, Chief medical officer and director of hospital medicine at Emory Johns Creek Hospital

“When seeking a physician for myself or family, I regard credentials as a bare minimum and the physician’s experience as a second layer, depending on the nature of care required,” remarked Adedapo Odetoyinbo, MD, SFHM, chief medical officer and director of hospital medicine at Emory Johns Creek Hospital. “Experience plays a key role when the need is more technical in nature or when decisions need to be made quickly in an emergency situation. More important to me than research itself is the physician’s ability to integrate research results and evidence-based medicine into their everyday practice.” Odetoyinbo refers to the doctor’s practical ability to decipher a puzzle — to select pieces of knowledge from his or her education and experiences, then correctly apply them to the situation at hand. In the physician’s pursuit to protect and restore a patient’s well being, knowledge enhances reasoning and rational decision-making. Experts agree that some doctors are simply better than others at applying what they know. pointsnorthatlanta.com | June 2014 | Points North

“What separates the good doctors from those we consider ‘top docs’ is their ability to listen to patients — to really hear them and respond to what they are saying.” CINDY HARDY Physician relations manager at North Fulton Hospital

EXCELLENT COMMUNICATORS Many of the experts we polled remarked that the best of the best have a toolbox full of excellent soft skills — those personal attributes and qualities that enhance an individual’s one-on-one interactions and performance. “What separates the good doctors from those we consider ‘top docs’ is their ability to listen to patients — to really hear them and respond to what they are saying,” said Cindy Hardy, a former nurse and now physician relations manager at North Fulton Hospital. She noted that master physicians allow patients to set the tempo for the first few minutes of an interaction while listening and gathering valuable information. Only then, do they respond. A study published in The Journal of the American Osteopathic Association in 2005 (Travaline, Ruchinskas, and D’Alonzo) found that in many cases, effective patientphysician communication can improve a patient’s health as quantifiably as many drugs. Patients who understand their doctors are more likely to acknowledge health problems, 56

Points North | June 2014 | pointsnorthatlanta.com

understand their treatment options, modify their behavior accordingly and follow their medication schedules. “And the great ones communicate with the patient and the family,” Hardy noted. “The great ones listen to input and speak at a level ensuring everyone in the room understands what’s going on, which is particularly important when a physician, patient and patient’s family are discussing a plan of care.” Dr. Robert Campbell, chief of cardiac services at the Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Sibley Heart Center added that great doctors usually surround themselves with staff members who are committed to listening as well. “Good communication helps support our team culture,” Campbell said. “Given high volume, high patient acuity and high patient throughput — both inpatient and outpatient — it’s clear that no one single provider can function alone. Therefore, it’s important that we work as a cohesive team and that requires excellent communication to coordinate our efforts.”

COMPASSION Esteemed physicians not only maintain technical competence, but also nourish and exercise humanistic qualities — kindness, warmth and compassion — when a patient needs it most. “Again, the credentials are a given,” said Debbie Keel, chief executive officer of North Fulton Hospital. “But when a patient isn’t feeling well, or they are afraid, or they are facing long, expensive care and are concerned about the costs, they need compassion, and the very best doctors have a compassionate presence about them.” Keel, a mother and grandmother herself, encourages her staff to see patients in a different light. “I say, ‘That’s your mother in that bed,’” she added. “Top doctors treat their patients with the same compassion that they would have with their own family members.” But showing compassion is harder today given that doctors are stretched thin and must care for more patients than ever during the course of the day. “We can’t create more hours in the day,” she said. “It is hard to show their caring sensitive sides when they only have a few minutes with a patient, but [the most-respected doctors] do it.”

Q

THE RIGHT QUESTIONS TO FIND THE RIGHT DOCTOR

First of all, ask friends, family members and your other doctors for recommendations. Once you have a few names, review their education, experience and special training using medicalboard.georgia.gov. When you meet the doctor for the first time, ask yourself: Am I comfortable talking to the doctor? Do I feel a connection? Did the doctor listen to me? Did the doctor answer all of my questions? Did the doctor explain things well? Did the doctor seem genuinely concerned about my well-being?

HIGHEST ETHICAL STANDARDS All physicians pledge to promote and encourage the highest level of medical ethics, a system of moral principles that apply values and judgments to the practice of medicine. Most healthcare experts, however, say that ethics go far beyond a doctor’s moral obligations. Ethics encompass how they perform when no one is looking and how they treat others. “When I interview physicians who are joining us, I tell them they will not survive long if they are lazy or unethical,” said Steve Waronker, MD, department chair of anesthesiology at Emory Johns Creek Hospital. “I also tell them that if they cannot live by the Golden Rule and treat the environmental services employee better than the CEO, they need not apply.” Indeed, many doctors — especially the really great ones — view the Hippocratic Oath as a sacred covenant. By reciting it, physicians swear to practice medicine honestly, avoid acts of impropriety or corruption, keep conversations confidential and many other codes of moral conduct. It’s their guide to ethical behavior.

58

Points North | June 2014 | pointsnorthatlanta.com

Among other attributes that transform good doctors into truly great ones is intuitive perception. Yes, that sixth sense does play a factor, along with accessibility, common sense, bedside manner and a doctor’s willingness to be a team player. Perhaps it is this ability to be multifaceted and multidimensional that makes some shine more brightly. “They possess compassion, common sense, command of a large body of knowledge and the humility to ask for help when things get complex and confusing,” Waronker said. “Ultimately, the best physicians have it all.” PN
