HE WALKS ON

When I was a kid, my

favorite Saturdays were not spent parked in front of a television watching cartoons, but in a corner booth at Mr. Swiss with my Papa. The hole-in-the-wall breakfast joint has always been an early-morning gathering spot for “old-timers,” but on those Saturdays, it was the perfect setting for our special dates. Papa would proudly introduce me to all his friends, then devote his full attention to me over biscuits and gravy. As the ﬁrst grandchild, I was never lacking in the attention department, but I cherished that one-on-one time all the same. At 80 years old this month, my mother’s father is a relic from a special generation, a Southern gentleman who loves Jesus and George Jones, who soaks his cornbread in his milk and always says grace. I love to listen to him play the guitar, singing every verse of “I’ll Fly Away” and “Because He Lives,” though my favorite is “Mema,” an original tune he penned for my

grandmother, who celebrated her own 80th birthday last fall. (Married 60 years this summer, theirs is the great American love story, as iconic as Johnny & June.) Papa has the best sense of humor, both silly and sweet, and he’s not ashamed of his sensitive side, either. My aunt thinks that raising two daughters has softened him over the years, though I can’t imagine him any other way. He always dishes out compliments freely … and ﬁshes for them, too. “Have I told you I love you today?” he’ll ask, and then “Did you dream about me last night?” He’s taught me how to live well and work hard, how to love and to laugh, and even how to dance the jitterbug. He walks the walk and talks the talk, and, personally, I think he walks on water. Happy birthday, Papa. I love you!

Rockin’ Roswell In a brand-new fundraising initiative, Roswell Woman’s Club (RWC) has enlisted local artists to design and paint beautiful handmade Adirondack rocking chairs. During April and May, the chairs will be prominently displayed throughout North Fulton, but the real fun takes place on June 1. The Rockin’ Roswell CHAIRity Event, held at Nalley Toyota of Roswell, will feature 62 adult rockers and 13 child-size chairs available in live and silent auctions – including a few designed by Points North’s own artistic team! The famous poet wrote extensively on topics from nature to self-reliance. But to multitudes of Atlanta equestrians, the words that might resonate most soundly are “Riding a horse is not a gentle hobby, to be picked up and laid down like a game of solitaire. It is a grand passion.” A true horse lover would nod their head in unwavering agreement. They, more than anyone, know exactly what old Emerson was talking about. A Field of Dreams The equestrian life has many faces. It may be the joy a child feels grooming her horse, or pride achieved from helping around the barn. Showing up on your volunteer day though it’s freezing cold and pouring rain. It can take the shape of hours of focused training. Rigorous “A”-level show programs, travel weekends, ribbons and mounds of check writing. We all know horses and their care are expensive, but it’s heartening to note an impressive number of riding clubs around Atlanta’s Northside are making a conscious

effort to meld passion with the conﬁnes of reality. Take Scott Welker, manager of the newly dubbed Woodstock Riding Club, who recently initiated a working student program. Barn work traded for ride time and lessons has worked out well. The kids adore being with the horses and Welker is passionate about offering local children of various means a chance to discover the love of horses. “My vision is to provide the opportunity to create lifelong memories and a quality partnership between you and your horse,” Welker stated thoughtfully. With 75 acres of pasture, a stocked lake for ﬁshing and space for movies on the lawn, the man is nicely poised to execute his dream. Milton’s Keely Ryan, owner of In Your Dreams Farm, is another seasoned equestrian leading the charge to make sure kids who should be riding, are riding. Her passion led to the founding of RIFNA (Riders Interscholastic Federation of North America). That’s a mouth-full. What it means, however, is quite simple. program designed specifically for middle and high school students. Interestingly, owning one’s own horse is not a requirement. Young equestrians train astride the farm’s 21-horse arsenal: ponies, quarter horses and warm bloods. Out of that success tumbles EPIC (Equestrian Programs Interscholastic & Collegiate), a force in leveling the financial playing field in the sport. Academic scholarships and discounted lessons currently serve approximately 150 riders around the greater Atlanta area. Striding from her barn with upswept blond hair and knee-high work boots firmly in place, Ryan cracks the mold as a modern-day myth debunker. This woman is on a mission to educate the public that a passion for horses and the dream to show is not only for the Richie Rich’s of the world. Ryan’s handy-dandy spreadsheet comparing youth sports to riding costs proves it. A few examples include one season of cheerleading ranging from $355

to $1,200, one season of football ranging from $840 to $1,665 and one full year of c omp e t it ion w it h RIFNA falling around $935 to $2,480. This is powerful information coming from one of the area’s premier show barns, a facility located at the epicenter of Atlanta horse country: the intersection of Birmingham Highway and Birmingham Road. Birmingham & Birmingham. Sounds like a law ﬁrm, but with loosened tie and actual spring in its step. Saddle Up Across Atlanta’s Northside, equestrian programs of all calibers and levels abound. There are polished riding clubs ﬁner than your best crystal, twice as shiny. Heavyweight facilities with big-name trainers only too happy to assist a rider in her quest for “A”-circuit royalty. But it’s nice to know

the smaller operations are still breathing in and out as well — quiet stables happily existing under the media radar. One such family-owned Woodstock facility actually prefers it that way, incognito-style. The gravel drive of Show Me Farm slides from the blacktop, immediately disappearing under a canopy of green. What lies beyond the street is anyone’s guess. There is no sign. I passed the place thrice. Eventually I ﬁgured it out. Curtains of foliage parted, revealing one butter-yellow barn, several pastures and three generations of family members on hand to greet me. Show Me Farm is a hunter-jumper show barn specializing in family feel and individual attention. Owner/ barn manager Hillary Roebuck Blackinton and trainer Karen Boysen run a riding program balanced with expertise, purpose and kindness. Though Blackinton is the energizing force of the establishment, it was her parents who began the endeavor decades ago, quite accidentally. Blackinton’s mother Deb Roebuck explained the only thing their 5-yearold daughter wanted was a pony. “We bought some My Pretty Ponies trying to appease her.” “Didn’t work?” I offered. “No, it didn’t,” Roebuck laughed, gesturing to the barn, the grounds and entire operation that has ﬂourished due to their daughter’s passion. In time Blackinton took over the facility, leaving mom and pop in need of

new digs. Instead of moving someplace sandy and tropical, the Roebuck’s simply purchased more horse property. Located in Ball Ground, Show Me Farms North is now a 35-acre spread where they’ve founded For the Love of A Horse: a nonproﬁt rescue program for abandoned and tuckered-out horses. Another organization evokes a similar mission. Cheryl Flanagan, founder of Save the Horses, understands a horse-lover’s life can also look like this: caring for an abused animal rendered unrideable by human cruelty. She and her posse of volunteers have gained national attention for their dedication to the rescue and rehabilitation of

Recently launched: You, Yoga and A Horse! Not sure if they’ve ofﬁcially slapped an exclamation point on the end of that title. If not, they should. How ingenious of them to partner with Sami Jackson

from Seva Yoga, conceptualizing how to do yoga alongside a horse companion. Relaxed grooming. Meditative walking. Synchronized breathing. Human hands placed across a horse’s soft back as a balancing point. I feel more calm simply writing about it. Both Flanagan and Jackson agree: horse therapy is people therapy.

Trailing an Equestrian Lifestyle In the same spirit, one residential community in Cumming has uniquely incorporated equestrian trails directly into its ﬂoor plan. Echoing the streets, mulched riding paths course throughout the Chattahoochee River Club (CRC), eventually disappearing into woods. From there, riders have unparalleled access to more than 12 miles of trails within the Chattahoochee National Forest. Riding enthusiasts may either trailer in their horses, or do it the easy way by signing on for trail rides at Flowered Rock Farm, an independently owned stable nestled at the neighborhood’s entrance. Show up with a nominal $36 and be treated to a glorious afternoon ride. Winding and dipping, the trails offer amazing views of the Chattahoochee River and its wetlands. “It’s fun to see the horses passing by,” said Nicole Solano, a longtime CRC resident. “Reminds me of riding when I was a girl.” Twenty-five years ago equestrian trails also wove through Sandy Spring’s Huntcliff neighborhood. They’ve since succumbed to overgrowth. The Huntcliff Equestrian Center, on the other hand, is still going strong. Perched on the banks of the Chattahoochee River, riders train against a backsplash of natural splendor and waterscape sunsets. Currently, the center boasts four Interscholastic Equestrian Association (IEA) teams. The IEA brings a unique aspect to the world of horse competitions, in that none of the students own their own horses. The idea is for the host team and participating barns to supply mounts and equipment. Before each show, lots are drawn to see which rider gets which horse. It’s the mother of all meet-and-greets. Scores based upon horsemanship and equitation, not the horse. The innovative decade-old program has succeeded in creating both ribbon winners and horse-lovers for life. Shadowbrook Farms is the equine

facility of choice of Forsyth County’s Kim Pate. The avid equestrian has shown hunter-jumper for more than 25 years, and recently added dressage to her repertoire. She looks forward to passing the equestrian lifestyle down to her daughters. “My kids are raised in a barn,” Pate half-joked. “It’s the best thing for them.” Back at Woodstock Riding Club, Bree Lake couldn’t agree more. She boards two horses, and can’t imagine life without them. Years ago after earning a degree in equine studies from Virginia Intermont, she promptly bought herself a graduation gift: her ﬁrst horse. Most college grads celebrate differently, but that’s the power of horse-love. Perhaps Winston Churchill said it best: “There is something about the outside of a horse that is good for the inside of a man.” More than ever, equine opportunities across Atlanta’s Northside abound; each encouraging the magic, peace, power and healing that comes from loving a horse. wine tasting social events via Atlanta Wine Meetup, Katt Martin was having trouble ﬁnding venues that allowed her clients to navigate the world of wine, so Martin set out to open her own space and bring an educational aspect to the events. In spring 2012, she opened Wine Xplorer. “Our concept is one of exploring and educating the consumer so that they can understand what’s going on in the confusing world of wine when they want to purchase a bottle,” Martin said. Martin hosts events in her nicely appointed digs in Dunwoody Plaza Shopping Center several times each month, where guests appreciate the opportunity to taste six to seven wines, yet do not get overburdened with too much detail. “Our goal is to engage, not overwhelm,” she said. “Our wine presenters provide a baseline education for the consumer, and guide them into choosing wines they will enjoy. We don’t inundate with technical data.” Like a neighborhood gathering, guests are asked to share a dish with others who attend certain Wine Xplorer events. Martin is ﬁnalizing plans for a wine club, which include the opportunity to sample and purchase wines from smallproduction wineries from all parts of the world. ANATABLOC and the Little Alkaloid that Could A Possible Answer for Inﬂammatory Issues { WRI T TEN BY HEAT HER KW BROWN }

y nature, I’m a skeptic. Some might

even say I enjoy playing devil’s advocate, but I’m inclined to think I just like challenging people to find better answers. Besides being a pain in someone’s side for sport, I’m also an athlete and a firm believer in staying active in order to stay healthy. Last fall, two of my favorite pastimes converged unexpectedly. And it all started with an uncommon question: A-nata-what? Table Talk Injured, unable to run and downright frustrated with my situation, I listened as Gayle Barron, fitness expert for Waffle House and a pioneer in women’s long distance running, commiserated briefly and then promptly suggested that I make an appointment with Keith Gray, a neuromuscular therapist and licensed massage therapist located in Buckhead. I wasn’t sure a massage therapist could fix me, but it has been my experience that when a running legend tells you what to do, you follow directions. So, for the moment, I put aside my penchant for playing devil’s advocate and did just that. Wise choice, as Gray had me up and running in no time, but it was on his massage table that I began to learn about Anatabloc, a dietary supplement designed to provide anti-inflammatory support.

I knew it had helped Barron’s bout with sciatica, but Gray shared that, in addition to improving aches and pains, scientists had recently presented research touting beneficial effects on Alzheimer’s disease in New Orleans at Neuroscience 2012, the world’s largest and most prestigious scientific meeting dedicated to brain and neurological science with neuroscientists from around the world. Studies with multiple sclerosis, traumatic brain injury and auto-immune disorders were also mentioned. The more he talked, the more questions I had. What is in this little lozenge? Is it true that it helps people afflicted with such a wide variety of issues? And if so, is it healthy? Why had no one discovered it before now? Both Barron and Gray, who take Anatabloc daily, have had positive results, but the Doubting Thomas in me needed more information. Testing, Testing, 1, 2, 3 I’ll be the first to admit that science has always been a field well beyond my grasp, but when I reached out to Dr. Ryan Lanier, Chief Clinical Research Scientist at Rock Creek Pharmaceuticals, a subsidiary of Star Scientific, he graciously took the time to explain all about Anatabloc’s anti-inflammatory potential in a way that even I could understand. It all starts with the Solanacea family of plants, which includes a wide range of vegetables like tomatoes, eggplant, green peppers, tobacco and potatoes. These sources of food,

medicine and spices are also known for being rich in alkaloids, a group of naturally-occurring compounds. One of these is called anatabine (pronounced a-nata-bean). What researchers discovered about this particular compound is that it possesses an impressive number of surprising beneficial effects that have pushed scientists like Lanier into another gear. “We are still learning — everything we have is based on research that has been done either on the bench top or on animals — but what [anatabine] seems to be doing within the cell is reducing activation (or the activity) of a couple different proteins,” Lanier explained. Once activated by an injury, infection or some other pro-inflammatory signal, these proteins cause the cells to produce and release additional pro-inflammatory proteins that essentially set off red flags that something is wrong. “Anatabloc seems to interfere with [these proteins] in some way, so that signal is cut off before inflammation really

spreads,” Lanier said, adding, “You still have the ability to respond to infectious organisms and you still have the ability to respond to injury, but Anatabloc seems to dampen the excessive or prolonged inflammation, which is what is dangerous to us.” Having scraped our knees or bumped our heads at some point in the past, most of us already know the acute response to inflammation is typically described as red, swelling, sore or warm, but according to Lanier, there is more going on beneath the surface. “The issue that causes a lot of problems is chronic — excessive inflammation that goes on for weeks, months or even years and you may not even notice it. If those inflammatory mediators aren’t cut off, they start attacking our own tissue,” he said. And this is where trouble can start. Athletic Ambassadors Lanier listed cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, thyroiditis and arthritis among others as interrelated issues with this excessive or uncontrolled inflammation being the common denominator tying them together. “We have a study that our partners at the Roskamp Institute sponsored looking at C-reactive protein (CRP), which has become a pretty hot topic in the last couple of years. CRP can be measured in the body and is a good indicator of whether you’re in a chronic inflammatory state because it’s only produced in response to something that causes inflammation,” Lanier said. It was this underlying potential for trouble that led professional golfer Fred Couples to try Anatabloc. It’s been documented that when Couples fi rst had his CRP levels tested, they were very high, and after three months on Anatabloc, his levels dropped markedly. “I had known for some time that inflammation was contributing to daily discomfort for me,” Couples said. “I started taking [Anatabloc] to boost my body’s ability to decrease inflammation. Most of what I was able to find were personal accounts of how it has helped a range of health issues. Okay, so it works for many, but what about the long-term effects?

I haven’t tried Anatabloc yet. With all the miles in my future, I probably should and I probably will, but for now, I’m content to read the latest research from curious minds who, like me, enjoy pushing people to ﬁnd better answers and healthier solutions. PN

grass lining the lush fairways and green complexes on golf courses throughout the world. It’s also an apt description of the financial aspect of the golf business during the past ﬁve years or so. Weekdays once attracted the fat cats of corporate America, day traders, salespeople trying to make an impression on tough-to-close clients and retirees who couldn’t wait to put a peg in the ground. The crews stafﬁng golf courses have dwindled, maintenance crews that once could have invaded and taken over Luxembourg have been cut back in size, and those of us who played up to 100 rounds per year are now lucky to play once a month. A Patriotic Pastime? Charleston, S.C., is surrounded by fine golf courses with impeccable reviews and views. Renowned Kiawah Island has five courses to choose from, while neighbor Seabrook Island has two. North of town, Wild Dunes Resort has two fine courses in Isle of Palms, and Mt. Pleasant’s River Towne Country Club, Dunes West Golf Club and Charleston National Country Club all provide daily fee options and nearby or onsite accommodations. There are plenty of other options in the area, but few provide the overall experience like Patriots Point Links and The Cottages on Charleston Harbor. Patriots Point Links overlooks the harbor on the Mt. Pleasant side at the mouth of the Cooper River. If you can’t make history on the course, not far from the first tee at Patriots Point, you can find plenty. Patriots Point is home to the USS Yorktown and its Congressional Medal of Honor Museum, the USS Clamagore (the only preserved Guppy III submarine), USS Laffey (which supported the D-Day

landings in Normandy and was then transferred to the Paciﬁc theater off Okinawa), a Vietnam Naval Support Base Camp and the Cold War Submarine Memorial. Battery Gary, where cadets from The Citadel ﬁred upon Fort Sumter and prevented The Star of the West from resupplying Union troops was located nearby. In addition, the College of Charleston’s baseball (15 home games in the months of April and May, including UGA, May 8, and Georgia Southern, May 16 – 18), softball, soccer and tennis facilities all are located at Patriots Point. The golf course, designed by Willard Byrd in 1979, might be considered tame in some circles due to its length (5,500 to 6,955 yards) and generous fairways, but once the wind starts howling, you’ll appreciate the generosity. Views of downtown Charleston, only 10 minutes away by car, and Fort Sumter (a ferry ride) are scintillating on a clear day. from the white tees, golfers will face only three par-4 holes that are longer than 400 yards, and all par-3 holes require midto short-iron approaches. Again, that is dependent upon the winds. The signature 17th hole, which features an island green

with Fort Sumter providing the backdrop, measures just 130 to 150 yards. Some days you might hit a sand wedge, while on others it might require a 5-iron. And that is the beauty of Patriots Point and other links courses, because you never

Given the choice between a city

and country setting, I typically opt for the latter, yet I certainly appreciate an urban environment for shopping, dining and the arts. It’s no wonder I’m so enamored with Blue Ridge, Ga. This little mountain town has it all — the sophistication and cultural variety of intown neighborhoods like Virginia Highland set against a bucolic background, replete with sweeping scenery, small-town charm and plenty of fresh air. I could imagine a life here — taking my coffee each morning at L&L Beanery Café, entertaining friends at the numerous shops and restaurants in town, and escaping to a cabin in the countryside at day’s end. For now, I’ll settle for a weekend getaway whenever I get the chance. Discovering Downtown On a recent visit, we rolled into town just in time for lunch at Harvest on Main, which warrants the notquite-two-hour drive in itself. Housed in a lodge-like structure in the center of town, the restaurant blends a relaxed, rustic vibe (complete with roaring ﬁreplace, exposed wood rafters and trophy-sized mounts) with elements of ﬁne dining. After a leisurely lunch of blackened salmon BLTs with house-smoked bacon and caper remoulade, we hit the streets for some serious shopping. By the end of the afternoon, we had plenty to show for our efforts — crocheted scarves from Posh on Main, specialty spice blends from Out of the Blue Gourmet, ceramic canisters from Wrapsody in Blue and old-fashioned soaps from Huck’s General Store. Our need for retail therapy duly satisfied, it was time for a little more R&R, so we settled in for a few late afternoon flights of wine on the deck at Tastings of Blue Ridge before dinner at Christy Lee’s Courtyard Grille, where ﬁre pits keep al fresco diners nice and toasty on cool evenings. We declined when our server offered dessert, opting instead to stroll across the courtyard to The Sweet Shoppe, which won season six of Food Network’s “Cupcake Wars” with ﬂavors like French toast & bacon. Wide Open Spaces The next morning, we ventured out early for a healthy dose of fresh mountain air on horseback. Just 9 miles northwest of town, Adventure Trail Rides of Cashes Valley offers leisurely trails as well as more advanced

terrain to accommodate riders of all skill levels, all with scenic views of the surrounding mountains. After a quick and comical introduction from guide Noey Vineyard, we saddled up for a moderate ride on the Cashes Trail. A writer himself, Vineyard’s commentary provided additional entertainment as we traversed the trail. We learned about his special Fairy Cross rides, which double as treasure hunts for staurolite crystals, a natural phenomenon found in this part of North Georgia, and the “Picture-Perfect” botanical rides, which take place only in the spring and include fantastic photo ops with the azalea trees, wild Cherokee roses, wild orchids and lady slippers growing along the trail. After leading our horses back to the stable, we slipped into the Trailside General Store to peruse shelves stocked with old-fashioned food products and country kitsch. It was the perfect precursor to our next great shopping experience — a visit to Mercier Orchards. Though fall is the time for apple-picking in the orchard, Mercier’s store is a year-round shrine to the fruit — you’ll find it fresh in all varieties, covered in caramel and dipped in chocolate, baked into pies, bottled into syrups, ciders and jellies, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. The store also peddles more fresh produce, including its own production of peaches, strawberries, blueberries and cherries, every flavor of pie (and fried pie) you can possibly imagine, f udge, handdipped ice cream, gourmet goodies, country-chic home décor, old-fashioned toys, and plenty of trinkets. If you time it right, you can even pick your own strawberries in Mercier’s U-pick fields this season. Now in its 70th year of harvest, Mercier is celebrating the past while plowing ahead into the future with its new designation as a farm winery. With the opening of a tasting room last May, the orchard is now able to serve and sell wine products, so we settled at the bar for a few samples. Currently available are peach and blackberry wine, with plans for more products in the works. Numerous trails and streams lure hikers and fisherman back outside (visit Blue Ridge Mountain Outfitters for tips and all the requisite gear), while river adventures and canopy tours abound at Ocoee Rafting. In town, the Blue Ridge Mountains Arts Association offers one of the largest art galleries in North Georgia in the historic Fannin County Courthouse, or you can climb aboard the vintage train for a ride into McCaysville on the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway. When hunger strikes, Toccoa Riverside provides waterfront dining in its recently reopened restaurant, and the Swan Drive-In Theater plays first-run movies in a nostalgic setting beginning Memorial Day weekend. But a trip to the mountains isn’t complete without adequate time spent cozying up in a comfortable cabin, and our weekend home-away-from-home was awaiting our return. Aptly named River Whisper, our Mountain Top Cabin Rentals accommodation was more like a private lodge, perched high on a hill above the Toccoa River, with soaring cathedral ceilings, two master suites, a game room, a hot tub and a covered porch, where we spent the afternoon in front of the outdoor fireplace with chilled glasses of Mercier cider. Rather than trekking back to town for dinner, we enlisted the services of private chef Douglas Olsen of Cabin Cuisine, who makes it possible to enjoy gourmet dinners in the comfort of your cabin. Olsen arrived one hour before our scheduled mealtime to prepare the food, and the tantalizing scents wafting from the kitchen had our mouths watering well before we sat down to a four-course meal of pan-fried crab cakes, fresh seasonal salads, pecan-encrusted local trout and a grand finale of bananas foster. The dessert course doubled as entertainment, as Olsen dimmed the lights to flambé the dish before our captive audience, then scrubbed the kitchen back to a sparkling clean as we practically licked our plates. His dinners are certainly a special treat, yet he swears his techniques are simple enough for the home cook, and even offers a book filled with recipes to try for yourself. But something tells me they might not taste the same in any other setting. Perhaps I’ll pack up and move to Blue Ridge, after all. PN

of these clinical trials of the ultra cohesive implants throughout the last seven years. Ultra cohesive implants have a great number of advantages for certain patients. The form-stable nature helps retain shape better than other implants available and decreases the likelihood of structure shifting, collapsing or folding. In the infrequent case of implant rupture, the ultra cohesive gel remains within the implant pocket, as it is formulated to stay within the capsule, should the shell be compromised. There are also some disadvantages to this implant, including the necessity for a slightly larger incision, and it may be ﬁrmer than other types of cohesive implants. Although a slightly

larger incision, it is usually hidden in the breast fold, making it inconspicuous. There is also a slight chance of rotation of the implant. This can be minimized by surgical skill and placement, implant shape, and surface texture of the breast implant. All cohesive gel implants are designed for the specific needs of individual patients. years deciding on their purpose and direction in life. Not Casey Wortham. She’s been envisioning her name in bright lights since the ﬁrst grade, when she discovered the thrill of acting on stage. Nine years later, she’s been in more plays than she can count and plans on applying to the prestigious Tisch School of the Arts at NYU. “Ever since I was 6, I always randomly break into acting mode — super dramatic, fake tears,” said 15-year-old Casey. “I’m just such a dramatic person that acting is my calling, and it’s what I’m passionate about. I express myself through acting like someone that I’m not. That sounds weird, but it’s fun for me.” Casey, who attends Roswell High School, is a member of the inaugural Wells Fargo ArtsVibe Teen Council, a group of 48 Atlanta-area teens chosen for their talents across a number of artistic mediums, including painting, sculpture, poetry, dramatic and comedic monologues, scenes and skits, dance, and classical and contemporary music. Fargo ArtsVibe Teen Program, and its job is to help encourage local teens to experience and express themselves through art. It’s a smashing success so far as the goal is to reach 10,000 teens by this August, and they’re already at 7,000. Woodruff Arts Center (WAC), a campus in Midtown comprised of the Alliance Theatre, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Young Audiences and the High Museum of Art, launched the program last August after Wells Fargo donated a total of $2 million and one creative idea to help inspire teens. “[Wells Fargo] asked the Woodruff Arts Center to design a program with all of its divisions together. We love what they came back with because it impacts three things that are really important to us, and that’s kids, education and the arts,” said Mike Donnelly, Atlanta Regional

It gave the different divisions a great opportunity to work together to put together a program that was the first of its kind.” Finding a Voice WAC was thrilled about the project, but not confident they could anticipate the wants and interests of mutable teenagers. That’s how the second great idea arose: Why not select a body of already talented teen artists to plan events for their less involved fellow students? “Their role is to be an advisory board for us so we aren’t guessing what they’re thinking,” said Program Coordinator Kaitlin Gress, who works with all four WAC divisions. “They get to be a voice.” To fi nd potential council members, the WAC divisions compiled a list of teens who had been active in their individual programs and reached out to them, which is how Wortham heard of the program. The teen council was chosen based on an application process followed by an interview, and Wortham was ecstatic to hear she’d made the cut — even though she already had lots of commitments. “It’s a lot to balance, but if I’m really passionate about it, like cheerleading, theater and acting, then I definitely want to work hard enough,” she said. She and her fellow council members represent 31 different schools — public, home and private — and nine different counties. “They’re such a diverse group,” Gress said. “We weren’t trying for that, but we were so lucky to get it.” Each member of the council serves on one of six subcommittees: talent scouts, marketing and design, event planning, advocacy, publications and community service. “Casey is very active on the marketing committee,” Gress said. “She gets people really excited through social media.”

Twice a month, the council meets with Gress and their arts administrators from each of the divisions to discuss what they’ve been doing at school, out in the committee and on the WAC campus. They also talk about their recent art experiences and usually end with an art-related activity. One week they went to the High Museum and recorded their reactions to the works they saw, and another week, they held a Q&A session with guest performers at the Symphony Orchestra. But the most important part of their bi-monthly meetings is to plan the program’s events that are open to all teenagers, like music lessons, poetry slams, behind-the-scenes access to rehearsals and productions, themed “Teen Nights,” and performances by the Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra and Alliance Theatre. Events are planned around productions and exhibits on-campus, and at ArTLabs, interactive art exhibits where students recently painted a “Diego Mural” and learned to make corset casts in honor of the High’s Frida & Diego exhibit. Many events are free, and discounted tickets, reduced MARTA rates and waived parking fees are available for some paid events. “[The program] was designed to meet the needs of arts-oriented teens, but also those less familiar with arts,” Donnelly said. “It was really important that this was something that would provide an opportunity to those who maybe didn’t know so much about the arts and didn’t feel like they could afford to be interested.” The Big Coming-Out Years of experience haven’t cured Wortham of shakiness and nerves before auditions, but she says her mind becomes clear once she steps on stage.
