AS AN EAGER FILM STUDENT IN NORTH CAROLINA, I’d applied for an internship with a local filmmaker and honestly didn’t think I would get a call back, never mind an invitation to work with an empowering female. A year or two before we met, Barbara Trent had won an Academy Award for her feature-length documentary on the U.S. invasion of Panama. Her relentless commitment to be heard was always present, no matter if she was fiercely attempting to bypass military police or graciously accepting her Oscar. Beyond the screen, I learned that everyone has a story — sometimes it comes to you; other times, you have to search for it. In both cases, following your instinct will almost always yield success in telling a story that needs to be heard. Our November issue, as it has been the past three years, is packed with strong women and their equally compelling stories. The 10 women honored in this year’s Savvy & Successful Women of the Northside have been through almost everything and have come out swinging stronger, faster and more determined than ever. Whether it was the courage to be vulnerable, to heal, to help, or to start over, they’ve made us appreciate and ponder life’s possibilities. Cat Blanco, owner of the Marietta Book Exchange, knows a thing or two about gumption as well. Though narratives are nestled throughout her shop, this month, we highlight her own. Suffice it to say, it’s one for the books! Celebrating a curtain call of their own, The Center for Puppetry Arts opens its doors to the Worlds of Puppetry Museum, where Muppet and “Fraggle Rock” fans can string together a fun day, and across town, the world famous Complexions Contemporary Ballet boldly moves into Gwinnett. When it comes to making an impact, Asheville is inclined to accept the challenge and its daring South Slope — slippery for some, suitable for others — has only further defined the city as a distinct destination. Inspired by the people and places on these pages, maybe a second helping of moxie is one more thing to give thanks for this season.

She fashioned events tailored to the author’s tastes or something connected to the book — setting up a hair salon in the front of her store for a Dorothea Benton Frank novel set in a hair salon or bringing in a coffin for an Andrews’ book centered upon a funeral. She plays ABBA at Karen White’s book events because the author loves the band and makes gourmet brownies for foodie Susan Rebekah White. She does giveaways and offers snacks and music at her book events.

Her database grew steadily as she became known for her fun and creative events, and book lovers discovered that Blanco was so popular with authors that they often drop by her store unannounced to sign books and talk shop. Now she heavily promotes all events on her website and via social media. Her lively Facebook page features photos of authors dropping by, her latest events and information on the many authors she heavily supports.

BEYOND THE BOOKS For the past nine years, Blanco has been named the official bookseller for the Georgia Romance Writers, which features more than 90 authors each October at a conference where fans meet the authors. She also serves as the bookseller for all events for the Cobb Library Foundation. “The book business is a service to the community,” said Blanco, who has volunteered with the Decatur Book Festival for the past decade. A dozen years ago she launched a book club that meets monthly in the store. The membership of that club has steadily grown, November 2015 | PointsNorthAtlanta.com | 11

too. “We usually have about 20 at our meetings, but when an author talks, we may have 40 or more show up,” said Blanco, who also started a writers’ group, in which members include established, award-winning authors mixed with emerging writers not yet published. In recent years, she’s made her store home base for a knitting group and mahjong players. She just started offering painting classes a few times a month, too, which also draws a small crowd. Blanco’s biggest surprise hit came from her support of yet another self-published writer mentioned by one of her other authors. I had a book signing for Stephanie McAfee, who wrote ‘Diary of a Mad Fat Girl,’” Blanco said. “Nobody had ever heard of her, but we had 75 people in here that night. She was funny, new, from the South and talked about college football. My customers loved her.” Georgia Author of the Year and 2014 Savvy and Successful honoree Renea Winchester, author of “In the Garden with Billy: Lessons on Life, Love and Tomatoes” is another of Blanco’s self-published ﬁnds. “I can tell you for true that when no other bookseller would give me the time of day, Cat Blanco took a chance on me and stocked my ﬁrst book,” Winchester said. “And that is why she got my launch, because she was the only bookseller in the beginning who believed in me and hand-sold lots of copies. While other booksellers return unsold copies, she knows her readers and sells books. She takes chances, and many booksellers in the area copy her ideas. Her store makes money and is an asset to the community.” So Blanco’s dream of providing a community gathering place has come true. “I love being surrounded by all these books,” she said. “When I open the store in the morning, I am living my dream.” PN

Wondering if the number of phenomenal women in our community would dwindle after four years of requesting and sifting through nominations, we discovered quite the opposite. This year, we are once again proud to present 10 women with stories to make you smile, maybe tear up and hopefully even provide an inspirational push to go after your own goals. The women made our jobs fun and easy during a two-day photo shoot, as we enjoyed making models out of these already model citizens, moms, CEOs and coworkers. Many were surprised to discover they had been selected, let alone nominated. Savvy and Successful began in 2012 as a way to do exactly that; to bring deserving ladies into the spotlight and say “thank you” for all they do. We must also give thanks to the thoughtful people who nominated them for seeing each woman’s inner light and sharing it with us.

One of the ﬁrst stories Amy Wallace told when I pulled up a folding chair to the dusty table outside her north Cumming barn was about a young boy who couldn’t communicate. It wasn’t that he couldn’t hear or talk, but he

couldn’t grasp the art of voicing his own thoughts. In fact, he’d simply repeat whatever was said to him. His cognitive disability, one of the many scenarios among children who seek treatment with Wallace at North Georgia Equine in Motion, was something no doctor could cure with medicine and office visits alone. Being on a horse, however, was a little dose of something miraculous. After months of shouting, “Walk on!” — the command

to keep your horse moving — the volunteers, Wallace and the child’s parents were hanging out by the fence, casually chatting. The child, on the other hand, was growing impatient and suddenly barked, “WALK ON!” No one moved, not even the horse. What did ensue was an onslaught of cheers, tears and lots of hugging. Wallace has plenty of these stories. While she will tell you she’s never sure any of them are a direct result of hippotherapy, or simply God’s will, that moment she gets to witness something click for a child is what makes it all worth it. “It’s pretty awesome when you love what you do,” Wallace said. Hippotherapy uses the motion of horses to help aid in the rehab of physical, occupational or speech therapies. As Wallace explained, a horse’s gait is much like a human’s, so for many patients, it serves as an extension of their hips. They can feel their body weight shifting from side to side, like they would if they could walk. They can use the horse’s warmth to relax and loosen tight muscles while the calming sense of a trained horse dials down the energy level, drives focus and encourages happiness. Wallace also owns the North Atlanta Hand Therapy practice in Cumming, but spends almost all of her time at the farm working with children. “Being out here in the dust, working with animals — that’s not for everyone.” For Wallace, a trail rider the majority of her life and

the wife of a farrier, being outdoors in blue jeans seems to be her own click. “Each kid’s life that I can help change … even just a little bit … that’s why I do this.”

If she were an artist, Rhonda DiMatteo would do installations. She’d take hundreds of brightly colored, giant gumballs and execute something truly inspiring with them inside four walls of an empty room. Perhaps it stems from choosing art history over her

pre-med degree or from teaching at the Art Institute of

Atlanta for several years, but using her hands to transform blank space is where DiMatteo would ﬁnd her escape. It may raise an eyebrow to think of one of the city’s

most talented curators as a gumball fanatic, but it mirrors her belief about art in the community. In fact, that’s why she moved with R. Alexander Fine Art outside the Perimeter. She believes they’ve created a place where anyone with a love, an appreciation or a curiosity for art

can spend time. “There’s this idea that if you want to immerse yourself in good culture, you have to go into Atlanta,” DiMatteo said. “We wanted people here to have that opportunity. We want it to feel like this is their place as much as it is ours.” DiMatteo packs the calendar with events that welcome the entire neighborhood, often benefitting different nonprofit or education-based groups. “Cocktails in the Garden” give greenery aficionados or couples looking for a date night a reason to visit the museum’s grounds, while the gallery’s collaboration with Atlanta nonprofit Reading is Essential for All People (REAP) and The Schenck School for its “Reading Between the Lines“ exhibition gives young children exposure to fine art. “I love this idea that kids are into art,” DiMatteo said. “They respond visually to it in a way that’s as important as reading a book.” A prime example was artist Pat Hobaugh who worked with students dealing with dyslexia to recreate famous works of art and illustrate how art has its own visual language used to tell a story. “It’s the idea that people can read a painting and transform their minds,” DiMatteo said. “That’s why any art has value.” The kids’ works were hung alongside Hobaugh’s and

works by several other notable artists, bringing together awareness for dyslexia and raising money for specialized teacher training in all public schools. “Through art, you realize you can learn more about yourself,” she added. “It makes you say, ‘I don’t know why I like this painting,’ but then dig deeper within yourself to ﬁgure out why, in fact, you do.”

To legions of young women, Michelle Grech has nabbed the ultimate dream job as partner, chief operating officer

and president of MELT, a bustling marketing ﬁrm that navigates entertainment, lifestyle and trends among collegiate athletics for brands like The Coca-Cola Company, Turner Sports and many more.

“How lucky are we that we get to wake up and work

on sports?” Grech raved.

Enthusiasm aside, another asset setting her apart

within a highly competitive field is an innate understanding of how whole families consume sporting events. Grech is passionate about bringing a storytelling aspect to her craft, intentional at creating experiences and not simply selling tickets.

How good is she? In 2014, the hard-hitting strategist and event producer was named “Game-Changer” by The Sports Business Journal as a top female executive in the industry. To Grech, the accolade felt akin to winning an Oscar. “Not only is she one of the few women (if not the only one) to run a large sports and entertainment ﬁrm in the country, but she’s a great wife and mom to 9-year-old Mackenzie,” said business partner and MELT CEO Vince Thompson. “All with a great smile on her face!” A University of Michigan and Emory University graduate, Grech admitted blue and gold are her team colors, but a passion for all sports began much earlier in life. She credits her dad for sports know-how and solid advice. “My father always said your career has three phases: learn, earn and return.” As for the latter, pro-bono work with MELT is just one of many ways Grech gives back. She’s also happy to share what she’s learned with a younger generation wanting to break into sports marketing: build your resumé by joining sports and communication organizations at your university, volunteer to set-up and work local sporting events or at a radio station, and most of all, secure an internship every summer. Chatting with Grech gives one the feeling you’re conversing with Wonder Woman’s blonde twin; an unstoppable force with a mega-watt smile and limitless energy. For Tasia Katapodis, the ﬂashback was overpowering. Seeing the Salvation Army’s warehouse ﬁlled with toys for the Christmas Angel Tree stirred memories of her own childhood, when she and her sister relied on the kindness of strangers for their holiday gifts.

“I was an Angel Tree kid, so I know what it means

for families to have support, love and compassion when times are difficult,” said Katapodis, regional president of United Community Bank (UCB). “Now I can reciprocate in such a small but signiﬁcant way to give a voice to those who do not have one.”

Growing up in Memphis, Tenn., Katapodis started

working with her father’s poultry business when she was

in the third grade. “I’d get on the phone to collect bills, making my voice sound older than I was,” she said. “[At 12], when my father went out of town on business, he put me in charge of running the plant.” Since graduating from Vanderbilt University as a L.S.

Wood Scholar, she has overseen the integration of eight bank mergers and acquisitions as well as managed a $4-million banking operation in six metropolitan Atlanta counties, while simultaneously establishing a new bank in the Atlanta market. She gives generously of her time and leadership talent. Katapodis has been chair of the board of the Metro Atlanta Salvation Army since 2012, managing 50 board members and an annual budget of more than $20 million. She also serves on the Gwinnett Medical Center’s Women’s Advisory Council and the Board of Counselors at The Carter Presidential Library — and the list of volunteer work continues. “So many opportunities exist to remind us of the work that still needs to be done,” she said. “We are focused on making positive changes in Atlanta that merit our attention. We cannot afford to overlook problems that exist in the markets where UCB operates.” Today, she continues to live by example, often bringing her own children to serve at soup kitchens, to help select Angel Tree gifts or ring the bell for the Salvation Army’s holiday kettles. “I want my children to understand that it’s a privilege to serve others and give of yourself to help a community grow and prosper,” she said. “It’s about making the next generation of citizens sensitive to the needs of their community, and each and every one of us doing our part.”

There are a lot of things you can accomplish in the time it takes to snap your ﬁngers. Fighting — and beating —

Hodgkin’s Lymphoma is not usually one of them. So, when Susan Stachler came home a week before her graduation from Auburn University and learned she had cancer, she had no idea what would happen next. What

she did know was that her Aunt Sue was diagnosed with

the same disease at her age and did not survive. “I’m a planner,” Stachler said. “I like to keep things

No, gingersnaps wouldn’t provide a cure or change the world, but Stachler saw something deeper in the secret family recipe: she could make a huge difference by simply making another person smile (although her own may be infectious enough). That idea turned into a business appropriately named Susansnaps. “We all know someone who has been affected by this cruel disease, but most of us are at a loss as to what to say or do,” she explained. “We found (and baked) a fun, uplifting and tasty way to say ‘thinking of you’ to those who need it most.” It’s no surprise Stachler’s cookies are now in national demand. Due to her dedication to spreading their message, Susansnaps have been on “World News Tonight with David Muir’s ‘Made in America’” as well as the “Today” show with Katie Couric and celebrity chef Bobby Flay’s TV show. “I gained a heightened sense of awareness that life can change in an instant, so why not go for it?” Stachler added. “I am stronger than I thought. In 1998, Alpharetta’s Jacqueline Vergez turned to dance lessons to navigate a difficult time in her life. “I found that when I was dancing, I didn’t think about anything else,” she said. “The ballroom and salsa classes relieved my stress and allowed me to meet new people. It was so much fun that I literally fell in love with it.” Several years later, remembering her childhood shy-

ness and struggles growing up in Manhattan, Vergez had a light-bulb moment. “Why not combine how much dance speaks to me with being able to help young people? After all, the teen years are so difficult, especially with the peer pressure, drugs, bullying and negative inﬂuence.

[Dance] could be a good outlet for them, not only to give

them a positive focus, but also to help them learn social skills and develop self-esteem.” She created JV Outreach as a Georgia 501(c)(3) and began offering classes for ages 10 to 18 at a local recreation center and through Tolbert Yilmaz School of Dance. Soon her program expanded to Fulton County middle schools and was taught by trained instructors at no charge to students. Within three years, the concept spread to 15 schools as well as to DanceFX in Johns Creek to make classes accessible on weekends. To pay instructors, Vergez tirelessly contacts sponsors and organizes the group’s October fundraiser, featuring performances by many of the students. Additionally, JV Outreach has received grants from the Fulton County Board of Commissioners/Fulton County Arts Council. “The community is realizing the impact of dance education and has been generous in supporting the organization,” she said. “More than 20,000 youth have beneﬁtted since we were founded in 2004. In 2014, more than 10,000 young people participated in classes, training for dance competitions or simply for the fun of sharing the experience with new friends.” Vergez’s commitment goes beyond fundraising and managing the logistics of scheduling. She’s been known to drive students to classes and competitions, personally purchase costumes and props, as well as attend classes, shows and events to give them encouragement and support. “Our goal is to give any child in Atlanta the chance to experience dance, and that’s just what we’re doing,” she said. “By building their conﬁdence, discipline and team-

work, we’re opening doors to the possibility of college educations, careers and a future.”

There’s no doubt in Tyear McCrary’s heart that she’s been tested time and again, yet, her faith has become stronger. “Growing up in a Christian home gave me the foun-

dation,” said McCrary who, in her 20s, decided to pursue

ministry. “My mom, my strongest supporter, sold our house in Cleveland and moved with me to a school in Tulsa. She taught me to trust God, and that’s what I have done.”

McCrary and her husband Scott, whom she mar-

ried 45 days after they ﬁrst met in 1993, have four adult children and three grandchildren. With her husband’s support, the couple has founded two churches, one in Cleveland as well as The Faith Church of Atlanta in

Peachtree Corners.

“God has trusted me with so much over the years by allowing me to serve others in both business and ministry,” McCrary said. In 2011, a council of bishops designated her as the ﬁrst female bishop in their organization. That role, which required two years of training, had to wait. Unfortunately, within three months of her consecration, she endured two auto accidents and suffered severe brain trauma. Testing her fortitude, doctors rendered a cancer diagnosis less than a year later. Her entire family turned to prayer and McCrary, now cancer-free, continues to carve her own path with unﬂappable faith and an unwavering desire to help others. Summarizing his wife’s dedication, Scott said, “From the beginning, I was drawn to her giving heart and the way she is always willing to help people. She’s just a giver who always encourages people to pay it forward.” Today, McCrary mentors women through her newest business — Madam CEO. As a 12-year-old, Cynthia Frisina watched her athletic, robust father contract a disease that paralyzed him from the neck down. Just like that, her childhood and family

were blindsided by a problem not part of the playbook. “When faced with adversity, I learned you have to

make a choice,” Frisina said. “Either succumb or learn from it and overcome.”

Her choice led to worldwide recognition as an expert

on disability advocacy, education, strategic outreach and fund development. She steers the reins of BlazeSports America, based in Norcross. The organization is an impressive multi-sport compilation, dedicated to providing children and adults with physical disabilities the chance to live active lives, complete with an occasional sore muscle just like the rest of us. Their programming — the legacy of the 1996 Atlanta Paralympic Games — is varied and mighty: from swimming to track and ﬁeld, wheelchair basketball to rock climbing. When asked if marrying physically challenged indi-

viduals with sports empowerment was an initial life goal, Frisina chuckled. “Not at all. I thought I’d be an entertainment attorney.” What changed? In 2001, Frisina learned her beautiful 10-month-old daughter Cathryn was diagnosed with cerebral palsy. She had expected minor complications due to premature birth, but not the gut-punch of a serious neurological disorder. Frustration grew watching Cathryn trying to keep up with her older sister Alexandra. The gap between local need versus opportunity for the disabled was obvious. In 2005, Frisina and another Atlanta mother, Anna Marie Champion, launched “Reaching for the Stars. A Foundation of Hope for Children with Cerebral Palsy.” The grassroots effort has grown into the largest pediatric cerebral palsy nonprofit foundation led by parents in the world. While her heart may bubble over with empathetic warmth, Frisina’s business savvy and strategic skills are laser focused. For more than 25 years, she worked at Fortune 500 companies doing award-winning lay-ups in the field of marketing. One platform led to another and the Midwestern transplant saw her passions align as BlazeSports’ executive director in February. An accomplished athlete, she knows that pushing the body forward and achieving goals are victories for any of us, but emphasized how rewarding it is to witness such advancements in those who struggle with physical hurdles. Frisina cites her daughters as inspiration, as well as the folks who collaborate with her. “Every day I’m working with heroes,” she reflected.

COMPLEXIONS CONTEMPORARY BALLET LEAPS TO GWINNETT STAGE

When Desmond Richardson is alone in his kitchen, he might dance to his “amalgam” of music — a varied playlist from different genres of hip hop to classical, jazz to rock. As a founding artistic director and the artist-in-residence of Complexions Contemporary Ballet, the multi-talented Richardson cites his wide variety of tastes to growing up in a family ﬁlled with musicians. To say he has built that varied taste in music and dance into a successful career would be quite the understatement. Just a sample from his deep well of accomplishments includes performing on the most esteemed international stages, directing choreography for celebrities like Prince and Lenny Kravitz and praise in The New York Times, hailing him “among the great dancers of his time.” Needless to say, it’s been a journey ever since Richardson was paired to work with a fellow principal dancer while at the world famous Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. It was the start of a great collaborative partnership — one that has endured more than 20 years — with the linear and classical Dwight Rhoden (who comes

with his own well of accolades). Rhoden now serves as Complexions’ co-founding artistic director and resident choreographer. Richardson said Ailey recognized his mentees were doing something different and encouraged their bold vision. After much discussion in a studio apartment and friends rehearsing together, Complexions was born in 1994. Richardson and Rhoden were told they might not sell out their ﬁrst performance at Symphony Space in New York City; on the contrary, they sold out all 886 seats for three nights. “It was pretty groundbreaking,” Richardson said. “People wanted to see all these different genres [of dance] together. We had modern dance and people that dance en pointe, urban, hip hop — we had it all in there. It’s part of who we are as Complexions, part of our mantra is the diversity and showing that diversity of dancers and people. It’s all those things combined. We love to provoke thought and transport the audience when they come to see us.”

NATURAL MOVEMENT Now celebrating their 21st year, Complexions continues to break new ground with the expansion of an office in Atlanta, aiming to bring a unique form of multicultural, inspired dance to broader audiences. On a phone call from New York, Points North Atlanta stole a few minutes of Richardson’s rare free time (he was also recently asked to serve as the artist-in-residence at University of Southern California’s Glorya Kaufman School of Dance) to talk about why Complexions chose the Empire State of the South as a second home for the company’s next 20 years and beyond. Simply put, friends and family in the area were the original draw. “We have been looking for a home for a while now, because being in New York we’ve been a bit transient,” he said. “People started saying you should really think about the South.” With that referral, Richardson and Rhoden started researching and planning, and likely won’t slow down even after next month’s grand debut in Gwinnett. The company welcomes aspiring artists to sign up for one of its famous Complexions’ dance intensives Dec. 26 through 30 at the Inﬁnite Energy Forum. Following the intensive, there will be a full performance on Dec. 30 at 7:30 p.m. in the Inﬁnite Energy Theater (formerly the Gwinnett Performing Arts Center) as a part of its 2015-16 season. “Complexions is coming to Atlanta to be part of the artistic fabric,” Richardson said. “We’re not just coming there one time. We really want to engage with the young people who are dancers and artists that are formidable in their craft. We want to surround ourselves with these people so we can continue to educate, inspire and bring forth the passion that exists for those that want to share their gift with the world.”

from the company’s history, they plan to unveil the world premiere of “STRUM,” set to Metallica songs alongside works by Johann Sebastian Bach as well as an excerpt inspired by the legendary voice and lyrics of famed jazz singer Jimmy Scott. This year, the company will also launch their annual “Icon Series,” a new piece dedicated to an individual that continually provokes thought for Complexions. The ﬁrst in the planned series pays tribute to Dr. Maya Angelou in “IMPRINT/ MAYA” with a solo performance by Richardson. “I had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Angelou on many occasions throughout my career and she liked my dancing,” Richardson said of the piece’s muse.

“[Her] words are pertinent to the times we live in now and we felt like [this] would be wonderful to do, as a testament to her prowess as a teacher, as a writer, as an educator. We wanted to celebrate her in this way.” It’s this level of immersive study when translating inspiration into choreographed dance that separates Complexions and its company of perpetual students. Their performances deviate from the dance some of us may do around our kitchens because it goes beyond arbitrary movement for fun – it’s smart, it’s well planned and it’s informed. Yet regardless of one’s previous experience with dance, Richardson aims to engage all audience members by exposing them to a magical environment in the theater. For him, that’s the best part of performing. “This started as a dream,” Richardson said. “To see that we’ve encouraged and inspired generations of dance throughout the two decades we’ve been in existence has been pretty fantastic. Now we look forward to the other generations of dancers that are coming up and, God willing, we’ll be around to give them information that has been imparted onto us.” A warm Southern welcome to their new home next month just might rival that groundbreaking opening night 21 years ago in New York. REALIZE IT MIGHT DATE ME, BUT I’M SO EXCITED… The Muppets are back on television. The Muppets, in one way or the other, have played a signiﬁcant role in my childhood from “Sesame Street” to “Fraggle Rock” and even Jim Henson’s “Emmet Otter’s Jug-Band Christmas.” When my own children were old enough, I promptly drove them into the city for a day at the Center of Puppetry Arts, where they were treated to an up-close-and-personal peek into a planet of puppets. Almost as thrilling as the smiles on their faces that day is the idea of doing it all over again when the new Worlds of Puppetry Museum opens its doors on Nov. 14.

“For both conservation efforts and to show as much of the collection as possible, the goal is never to have anything on display for more than two years,” Fritz said. Highlights of the Jim Henson Collection include the beloved duo Bert and Ernie, Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch from “Sesame Street,” Muppet characters Miss Piggy and Kermit the Frog, which will be displayed in “The Muppet Show” section, along with icons Fozzie Bear, Scooter and Dr. Teeth. Even The Doozers, Sprocket, Red and Gobo will be on display in the “Fraggle Rock” section of the gallery. Aside from Henson’s characters and artifacts, Fritz also described how this gallery will provide a deeper look into his work, complete with a reproduction of his office and a mock television studio so that guests get a feel of what it’s like to be a muppeteer. Centerpieces within the Global Collection include the popular stop-motion clay animated Gumby and Pokey, as well as examples of the iconic European hand puppets Punch and Judy. Julie Taymor’s Mufasa mask, developed as a prototype for the Broadway production of Disney’s “The Lion King,” will join the Scar mask as part of the exhibit’s animal collection. Also included are Bunraku puppets from Japan, water puppets from Vietnam, shadow puppets from Indonesia and two pieces dating back to the PreColumbian era. Other noteworthy renovations include an expanded Museum Store, a new puppetry library and a renovated entryway — one that promises to be packed with locals excited to explore the Worlds of Puppetry Museum for their ﬁrst of many visits. OOKING FOR AN EXCUSE TO GET AWAY? I HAVE ONE: ASHEVILLE, N.C. Need motivation to revisit when you’ve already toured Biltmore Estate and had breakfast at the Early Girl Eatery? I have two: chocolate and doughnuts. Might as well toss in Asheville’s burgeoning brewery district to complete the trifecta. Long known for being an easy escape from Atlanta, especially during the holidays when Biltmore Estate is dressed in its Christmas best, Asheville has expanded its initial draw for weekend warriors as a destination full of discovery. If you're willing to veer off the beaten path, I suggest steering slightly south of downtown to an area known as the South Slope.

BREWING A NEW SCENE It all started, as it often does in Asheville, with beer. When Green Man Brewery moved to Buxton Avenue on the South Slope nearly a decade ago, it not only provided more space to expand their production, it spurred other breweries to pour into the neighborhood as well. Since

then, Asheville’s formerly gritty automotive center has become the hottest spot in town. Deﬁned by an angular conﬁguration of thoroughfares that include Biltmore Avenue to the east, Ashland Avenue to the west and Coxe, Hilliard and Buxton Avenues between the two, the South Slope

is now home to Asheville Brewing Company, Brahmari Brewing, Burial Brewing, Catawba Brewing, Green Man, Hi-Wire, Twin Leaf, Wicked Weed and The Funkatorium (its sister location that specializes in sour beer). While I can’t speak to the merits of that official tour, we dutifully crafted a tour of our own that included much more than just brew. For all of the vices I strive to avoid, there is always an exception and rarely are doughnuts or chocolate the driving forces behind it. That is, as I quickly learned, unless they are locally sourced and handcrafted in small batches.

farther out of reach. Conflicted as to how I had found myself suddenly craving as many one-more-bites that I could muster, I had no other choice than to blame my location. Aside from being a haven of hop happiness, visitors to the South Slope are privy to culinary creations by an impressive list of talented chefs, namely one of Food & Wine’s 2015 Best Chefs Katie Button. She has created a speakeasy-inspired restaurant and lounge called Nightbell while Elliott Moss, who along with Meherwan Irani, are the two James Beard nominees behind Buxton Hall. Their restaurant features whole hog, pit-cooked barbecue with all of the fixings and graciously shares smoked bacon with neighbor Ben Myers whose Vortex Doughnuts are a must-have for many. Myers’ storefront doughnut shop resides in what was once the Standard Paper Mill, but aside from its location, there is nothing standard about these sweet and savory treats. A SURPLUS OF SWEET SPOTS Downtown Asheville is not without its own attractive additions. Among them is The Windsor Boutique Hotel. Dating back to 1907, the property was originally a hardware store then served a stint as apartments before sitting vacant. In its current life, the newly renovated space is a luxury boutique property smack dab in the heart of it all. Elements like wood, iron, exposed brick and industrial lighting mix with comfortable chairs and a cozy ﬁreplace, which was a warm welcome for our family of four. Each of the 14 well-appointed rooms are fully functioning suites equipped with a washer/dryer and kitchen. Although The Windsor does not have an onsite restaurant, the highly fashionforward shop Désirant, which opened its ﬁrst full-scale brick-and-mortar location inside the historic Windsor, includes a seated café bar. outright lie. Just as we thought we were making progress on one dish, another would appear. It was incredible, but be sure to arrive hungry and share. Speaking of bees, other downtown delights not to be missed are the Battery Park Book Exchange and The Asheville Bee Charmer. The ﬁrst U.S. city to receive the distinction of being “Bee City USA,” Asheville boasts an annual Sourwood Honey Festival, bee sweet spa treatments and a new honey bar and boutique. Always up for tasting new things, both of my children pulled up a stool at the honey bar for samples from across the world. My sweet spot, however, has always been books so what might have been a quick stop for some became an extended stay for me inside the Battery Park Book Exchange. Knowing this would be the case, my family set a time to regroup. “Meet me next to the champagne bar,” I said, wondering why the concept of ordering a bottle of chilled champagne and hanging out in a bookstore was not available in more cities. Maybe because people like me would have an even harder time of leaving. That’s the thing with Asheville. You can say you’ve been, but there’s always something new to experience when you return to keep you coming back. PN

Before his death in October 2012, Dr. J. Rufus Fears, a beloved, revered former history professor at the University of Oklahoma, deﬁned for students and all who would listen, the true meaning of a statesman/statesperson and the qualities he/she should possess. While the general meaning of “statesman” is a person who exhibits great wisdom and ability in directing the affairs of a government, or in dealing with important public issues, Fears examined the individual traits required and determined that the top three statesmen in history included just one U.S. president — Abraham Lincoln. The others? Winston Churchill and Pericles.

COMES A STATESMAN We’re little more than one year away from the 58th U.S. Presidential election, and perhaps it is a good time to examine which of the current cast of candidates are most statesmanlike, or the most “Presidential” if you prefer. Published in Brett and Kay McKay’s blog The Art of Manliness (artofmanliness.com), Fears’ qualities of a statesman were listed and later expounded upon in keen detail: “A statesman, Fears attests, is a free leader of a free people and must possess four essential qualities: a bedrock of principles; a moral compass; a vision; and the ability to build a consensus to achieve that vision.”

LINCOLNIAN IDEALS Lincoln’s statesmanship began in New Salem, Ill., in 1831, where he delighted the townspeople at the general store with his wit, intelligence and integrity. After serving four terms in the Illinois state legislature from 1834 to 1840, he left office in 1841. He didn’t return until 1846, when he captured the Whig nomination for a seat from the Illinois seventh congressional district to the U.S. House of Representatives, 10 days before the outbreak of the Mexican-American War. Once elected, Congressman Lincoln boldly challenged President James Polk’s assertion that the Mexicans had started the war by attacking American soldiers on American soil. In a speech on the House ﬂoor, Lincoln scathingly denounced Polk for taking the country to war by misrepresenting the situation to the nation, claiming (correctly) that the conﬂict had begun on territory contested by the two sides. It was a blatant and public attack on a popular President by a young, unknown congressman from a state that was solidly behind the war, according to Michael Burlingame, consulting editor, “Abraham Lincoln: Life Before the Presidency,” published by the Miller Center of Public Affairs at the University of Virginia. That verbal launch had been gaining momentum as Lincoln’s public decry of slavery at the age of 28 began while serving in the Illinois General Assembly in ILLUSTRATION BY ROBIN HARRISON

1837. During his well-publicized debates with Stephen A. Douglas 21 years later, Lincoln’s disdain for the institution continued. His public life was dedicated to the mission of ending slavery, and his Presidential proclamation and executive order, Jan. 1, 1863, changed the federal legal status of more than three million enslaved persons from slave to free. Later that year, Lincoln was invited to Gettysburg to address an estimated crowd of 20,000, during the dedication and consecration of the Soldiers’ National Cemetery, just four-and-a-half months after the historic battle. Edward Everett, a former senator, secretary of state, president of Harvard College and well-known orator was the keynote speaker for the event, and delivered a thorough, if not memorable, two-hour, 13,607-word speech that described the three-day battle, denounced the ambitious, rebellious side and paid great homage to the victorious Union. The original ceremony was scheduled for Oct. 23, but unsurprisingly, Everett needed more time to prepare his remarks. “…Wheresoever throughout the civilized world the accounts of this great warfare are read, and down to the latest period of recorded time, in the glorious annals of our common country there will be no brighter page than that which relates the battles of Gettysburg.”

MIXED REVIEWS Lincoln wasn’t notiﬁed about his forthcoming appearance until 17 days prior to the event, when he was asked to attend by David Wills, a 32-year-old Gettysburg lawyer. Wills had invited Lincoln to give concluding “remarks” at the dedication ceremony to follow the principal address by Everett. Lincoln could have declined the invitation, but he intended to use the opportunity to explain, in his own way to his detractors, why the cruel, savage war was necessary and still raged on.

The once bucolic countryside and town of south central Pennsylvania, where 160,000 men wreaked havoc simply reeked. In the days since the battle had concluded, corpses of men, mules and horses (an estimated 5,000) lay rotting above ground or in shallow, hastily dug graves. The 2,500 residents were illequipped to deal with such carnage. Possibly more than any President before or since, Lincoln was steeped in the teachings of both the Old Testament and New Testament, according to Fears. likening the sacrifice of those brave Union soldiers who perished to Christ’s crucifixion. “We have come to dedicate a portion of that field, as a final resting-place for those who here gave their lives, that that nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this.” While some who heard the address that day were visibly moved and grasped the totality of President Lincoln’s remarks, opponents cast his assertions aside quickly. Reviews followed party lines for the most part. However, Everett wrote the President a few days later asking him for a copy, while stating, “I should be glad, if I could flatter myself that I came as near to the central idea of the occasion, in two hours, as you did in two minutes.” On the other hand, The Harrisburg Patriot-Union had this to say about Lincoln’s address: “We pass over the silly remarks of the President. For the credit of the nation, we are willing that the veil of oblivion shall be dropped over them and that they shall be no more repeated or thought of.” As we know, caustic editorial remarks from media sources, particularly along party lines, are alive and well 152 years later. That fact provides pause as to what kind of legacy President Lincoln would leave had he served our country in the 21st century. Undoubtedly, he would be the butt of aspersions due to his humble origins, poor hat choice, protruding chin and firm stance on injustices of the day. Lincoln was attempting to win a consensus with his address. Governors of 17 free states attended. His address didn’t only pay homage to those who died at Gettysburg, but to those who died fighting for liberty and a free society on all of the Civil War battlefields, and reminded everyone about our role in the fight for independence. He also reminded them about the devastation and social disorder war brings, as well as the sacrifices of all who died and suffered as a result of war, which had at that time been raging for 30 months. He reminded them about the equality he sought for all men, and for all to remain devoted, steadfast and resolute to defeat the enemy. A 10-second sound byte may be the driving force behind the winner of the next Presidential election, Nov. 8, 2016, but the Gettysburg Address solidified Lincoln’s reputation as our country’s finest statesman, even if that legacy wasn’t cemented for days, months, years later.
