stickers and tags tout accomplishments that rarely go unnoticed in a city where feisty competitors await just across the net. Read why Prince brought its royal racquet business into Atlanta’s court and why when it comes to tennis vacations, Destin could be the sweet spot you’ve been missing (page 34). Maybe it was the countdown my children created for going back to school. Maybe it was my own harried pace, but summer slipped by as quickly as a set of pop-up thunderstorms and ready or not, here comes fall! This month, rather than rushing through the colorful days and cooler nights, I’m planning to kick up my heels and chill. Doesn’t mean fall will last longer, but it might mean I’ll enjoy it more. Here’s to a fun fall and a fresh start.

Queen OF ENVY

For the past nine years and counting, Paula Wardlaw has applied bronzer, blush and more to beautify women through her company, P. Jolie Cosmetics. Now in addition to being the face behind P. Jolie, this Cumming-based makeup guru is living out her childhood dream as the new manager of Windward Parkway’s Studio NV Salon. With an eye for the artful and an impressive résumé that includes modeling as well as working with big names like Bobbi Brown, Estée Lauder and many others, Wardlaw’s first order of business is giving Studio NV a makeover of its own. “Women don’t like to go to the mall to get their makeup done,” Wardlaw said. P. Jolie is your local alternative, with a complete line of dermatologist-tested mineral eye shadows, lipsticks and pressed powder that she promises is less messy while boasting vitamins A, C and E. And if there’s anything visibly noticeable about Wardlaw, it’s her passion for the brand and the salon, which the mother of two jokes are her third and fourth children. Don’t know where to start? Turn heads with the help of her most popular products – the Kabuki brush for flawless application and under-eye concealer – or better yet let Wardlaw sit you down and glam you up. Stop in the salon to meet their new stylists and – for the first time – purchase P. Jolie in store. 678-297-1234, studionvsalon.com.

Brush Up on JAPANESE

art

While we are partial to the English alphabet, we are willing to bend where calligraphy is concerned. Even without knowing the translation, Japanese calligraphy is an art appreciated across cultures, which is exactly why The Hudgens Center for Arts in Duluth has collected more than 140 pieces in two exhibits, on display this month. Presented in partnership with the Japan American Society of Georgia, Japanfest and the Japanese Consulate, the “Hiroshima International: Japanese Calligraphy and Paintings” exhibit lets you get up close and personal with works on paper from artists abroad, no passport necessary. The calligraphy truly comes to life in the second exhibit “Beyond Words: Calligraphic Work by the Atlanta Friends of the Alphabet” exclusively featuring local artists. Watch the calligraphers in action during the Illuminated Letters Program on Sept. 11 or during the exhibits’ closing reception on Sept. 20, and show your kids that a “scroll” isn’t just on a web browser. thehudgens.org

With a 1920s feel and a focus on cutting-edge style, knowledge, communication and personal relationships, Lenny's gives a nod to the area’s colorful past. ALL-STARS AT THE ALLIANCE

The Alliance Theatre is no rookie when it comes to producing award-winning shows. This season, they’ve pulled together an impressive creative team for the production of “Bull Durham,” a musical based on the 1988 film. Under the direction of Kip Fagan, theater stars John Behlmann, Will Swenson and Melissa Errico join the cast for the world premiere right here in Atlanta. A blend of comedy, drama and romance, “Bull Durham” is a tale (loosely based on Ron Shelton’s experiences in the Minor League) of three people caught in a love triangle, united by their passion for baseball. The production runs from Sept. 3 – Oct. 5, but make a point to attend opening night on Sept. 13, which coincides with the Alliance’s Season Opening Celebration. This year’s celebration honors Billye and Hank Aaron and will raise funds for the theater’s nationally recognized educational programs. 404-733-5000, alliancetheatre.org/bulldurham — Christine Kirk

RISING Atlanta Falcons’ Jonathan Babineaux defends fashion, football and keeping kids in school

UP

{ WRITTEN BY COLLEEN A NN MC N AL LY | PHOTO G R APHY BY MJA C R E ATI VE }

Before

meeting Jonathan Joel Babineaux, the nine-year-starting defensive tackle and a team captain for the Atlanta Falcons, everyone prepared me for his height, stature and overall size. But as I shook his hand and took in the beaming white smile towering above me, I was trying to get a glimpse not of what was above, but what was on the ground – or should I say, on his feet. A lesser-known fact about this rugged defender is there’s a championship fashion collection hanging in his closet. When not geared in his No. 95 jersey, pads and cleats, Babineaux goes the full 10 yards with glittering watches, custom-tailored suits, brightly patterned socks and his personal favorite, eyecatching shoes.

Looking Good, Playing Better Originally from Texas, Babineaux played football at the University of Iowa before he was selected as a second-round draft pick (59th overall) by the Atlanta Falcons almost a decade ago. “I came here in ’05 and I’ve experienced a lot through life, and … going through all those experiences helped me [become] the person I am today.” No kidding. Here, he has settled into residences on the Northside, married his college sweetheart Blair

and created a family with her and their two young children. Here, he has built a career with a single team, rising from a rookie to sink NFL quarterbacks as the “U.S.S. Babineaux.” He is humble about the latter, admitting he may not be one of the guys that “sells tickets to the games.” However, he wears a confidence in who he is, both as a Falcon and a family man – and while he expresses himself through his wardrobe, that attitude is an accessory money can’t buy. Although Atlanta is home now, Babineaux’s passion for fashion is not limited to boundaries drawn by I-285 or the state line. Just as he suits up on game days to play in the NFL, his wardrobe is on a national level as well. He has a personal shopper at Louis Vuitton in Lenox Square, sends his suits to a tailor in Los Angeles, finds inspiration in New York and frequents a jeweler in Seattle. “Even though I’m big and tall, I represent for the big guys when I come out there in my fashion,” he said. One thing’s for sure – he makes a big statement with his clothes. When athletic apparel is one’s work attire, where does the motivation originate to dress with the best of them, we wondered? Whether he is dressing up in

Family Threads For Babineaux, it all started in grade school when he and his brother would compete over who could look his best at school. “We had a contest on the first day of school to see who was going to wear the flyest Hawaiian shirt,” he said. His brother Jordan still laughs at this memory. Now living on the West Coast, Jordan said they have since developed their own personal styles and don’t truly compete anymore. “His fashion game is above average,” Jordan admitted, as well as hinting at the fact that when they get together, they still might go shopping together. Now, the siblings challenge each other in other ways, such as when Jordan, a former safety for the Seattle Seahawks and Tennessee Titans, and Babineaux have faced off on the field. Much like the Hawaiian shirts, this competition was in good fun, although the Falcons came out on top in December of 2007 and 2010. “It was rewarding to watch him play, and even more rewarding for our mom,” Jordan said of the

Points North | September 2014 | pointsnorthatlanta.com

experience. “To me, it’s the biggest joy.” Whether in fashion, football or even being a father, the younger brother said he does look up to Babineaux. “More than anything, we compete on a level to make each other better,” he said. When it comes to personal performance on the field, Babineaux approaches his career goals much in the same style of giving it his all. “I always go into the season and try to do better than I did the year before,” he said. When a player gives his entire career to the same team and continues to go strong every year, as Babineaux has done, the commitment does not go unnoticed by fans or teammates. He returns this season with a three-year extension on his contract, ranking him as one of the longest tenured players for the Falcons. According to the official Atlanta Falcons Blog (blogs.atlantafalcons.com), if Babineaux plays all 16 games in his next three seasons, he’ll reach 186 games played — good enough to tie with Bob Whitfield and Bobby Butler for fifth most in the team’s history. “Now [that] he has been there 10 years, he is one of the older guys on the roster,” added Jordan, who is currently working as an analyst with the NFL Network and believes the defensive line sets the tempo for a team. “He is definitely one of the front line soldiers leading the army into battle.”

{ JONATHAN BABINEAUX } HARD KNOCKS Fans who crave more insight into what happens in team meetings and in the locker room are in luck. HBO’s hit series “Hard Knocks” focused its ninth edition exclusively on the Falcons. In just five hour-long episodes, the television show intimately documented training camp and spotlighted players through the Sept. 2 finale. If you didn’t bleed black and red before, catching up on the episodes is your chance to witness genuine interactions within Arthur Blank’s empire – from the light-hearted pranks to the tear-jerking emotion surrounding injury or career shifts, you’ll be rooting for our home team boys like never before. Tune in before the Falcons kick off their regular season game against New Orleans at the Georgia Dome on Sept. 7.

Following Suit The Falcons family has looked to this “soldier’s” leadership as a repeated captain, and last year he served as the team’s 2013 United Way representative as well as one of two NFL players selected to travel to London to promote the league’s international series. (The Dirty Birds take flight across the pond to take on the Detroit Lions in Wembley Stadium on Oct. 26.) Rather than a brother to the other players, Babineaux sees himself in a different role within the Falcons family. “The head coach is always the dad,” he said with a laugh. “I feel like I’m the uncle.” He continued to explain that he feels a lot of the younger guys look up to him, follow his lead and are not afraid to talk to him about anything. “I feel like my leadership can go as far as they want it to, as long as they are following me and doing the necessary things to stay on the team and win ball games,” he said. During a tough season like last year’s, he offered his “best uncle advice” to motivate teammates. “You know things [won’t] always go the way we want them to, but we’ve still got to continue to progress and make sure that we’re doing the little things right,” Babineaux said with optimism for the upcoming year. “I think a lot of young guys took a big step last year as far as the last few games, so hopefully that will roll into this year. That way, they can keep their confidence and continue to maintain and do the necessary things they need to do to make sure they are bettering themselves, because you don’t want [it] to be the same as 2013 – and, of course, you don’t want to remember that year at all – but there were some good things we did. Hopefully in 2014, we can have things showing up consistently and be better than it was [last season].” SERIES SPONSORED BY BACARDÍ

24

Going the Distance Not only is Babineaux a big guy on the field and in fashion, he’s got a big heart off the field to match. While giving back is a core value within the Falcons franchise, he goes above and beyond. Since September

Points North | September 2014 | pointsnorthatlanta.com

2008, No. 95 has donated to more than 80 charities, foundations, at-risk schools and non-profit organizations that serve the medically fragile or under-served adults and children of Atlanta as well as his hometown of Port Arthur, Texas. His personal volunteer activities were even recognized by the Atlanta City Council with the proclamation of “Jonathan Babineaux Day” on June 20, 2011. One of these causes close to his heart is keeping kids in school to advance toward a degree. Among all of his accomplishments, Babineaux shared that he is most proud of graduating from college. To students on the verge of dropping out, he wants them to know “there are always resources for you to better yourself and help yourself, as far as getting one-on-one help with a teacher or a parent or a mentor that wants to give back” and to consider how these decisions can benefit them. “Make sure that you succeed because this is the beginning of your life. What you’re setting up right now is pretty much your planning – you’re planting your seed for the future and you definitely want to see that seed grow,” he said. “Everyone has different paths they take in life, but, overall, we hope that more kids take the right path.” Babineaux believes in this advice, not just for the community but for tackling concerns with his own children as well. He shared that his daughter, who just completed first grade, was scared to return to school because she heard second grade was harder. “I said, ‘Well, it’s like any other thing that you don’t know. You have to learn at first and then you progress. My advice to her is to continue to excel and try and learn everything you can, from home, at school and from other sources. The more you learn and do things with your school work, the better off you will be.” Now, that’s a game plan worth defending. PN

If

you’ve ever spent more than a few minutes with your arms braced on your closet doors just staring at your clothes, realizing you have “nothing to wear,” you’re definitely not alone. I do this every night when I try to decide what I should wear the next day. And whether I can’t find an answer because I am too tired, nothing fits or the weather doesn’t match what’s hanging up, I know that whatever ends up on my body the next day is how people are going to define my style. Ready to be in style and on trend this fall? With the right pieces in your closet, you can mix and match what’s already in there with a few new showstoppers for a flawless look to last all season. With the help of local retailers, Henry & Pearl, Go With the Flow, Academy Sports and Mud Pie, we know we’re aiming for classic silhouettes, yummy fall colors and a “his is hers” attitude where we can borrow from the guy’s closet, while adding our unique feminine touches and picking out wild patterns that we might never have dared to pair together … before now. It’s all about rerouting the classics for the guys, with tailored pieces cleaned, pressed and paired with fun details. A timeless chambray shirt and comfortable athletic tees are musts. Our advice is to shop your closet first – you’d be surprised what gems are lurking way in the back – then indulge in those few pieces that will round out a perfect wardrobe.

HOLDING COURT Tennis Royalty Moves to Atlanta

orking out of his garage in Princ-

eton, N.J. in 1970, Bob McClure engineered the world’s first ball machine for home courts by reversing a vacuum cleaner motor. Prince Sports was born and a pursuit of innovation began. As a longtime, avid tennis player in Atlanta, I was thrilled to learn such a celebrated name in tennis was heading to town. Prince Global Sports, one of the world’s most renowned racquet sports equipment and apparel companies moved its U.S. corporate headquarters to the Terminus 100 building in Buckhead at the end of July. Atlanta has always been proud of its compellingly extensive tennis community, and this business decision by Prince serves as a powerful ace for Atlanta’s appeal as a tennis wonderland.

Atlanta’s Ace Market Prince’s CEO Mike Ballardie said there were three key reasons for choosing Atlanta as its new home. “First, the incredibly strong volume of tennis participants in the metro area – it’s the envy of many other cities. Secondly, the transportation system led by Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is vastly important for the convenience of our customers, employees and partnerships. And third, the weather is terrific.” Ballardie also noted, “As we continue our growth as a global company, we see Atlanta and its vast resources

{ H O LD I N G CO U R T } as a perfect fit for our management, sales and marketing teams. Atlanta’s thriving tennis community has more men, women and children playing tennis than any other U.S. city, making it a great home base for Prince.” A privately held company with $100-million retail value globally, Prince will be staffing up to 20 associates in Atlanta. Ballardie, originally from Liverpool – roughly four hours from the company’s international headquarters in London, England – is now searching for the right Atlanta neighborhood to relocate his family early next year. So how will Atlanta benefit from this move? Notably, there will be a service center and showroom for brand presentations with various partners, as well as enhanced relationships with such retail establishments as Your Serve, PGA Tour Superstore and Lianna Jones. They’re engaging with organizers of the Atlanta Lawn Tennis Association, more commonly know as ALTA (which boasts more than 80,000 members), the BB&T Atlanta Open (held annually at Atlantic Station) as well as with teaching professional associations and junior training programs. John Isner, a leading U.S. player, UGA graduate and Atlanta favorite, David Ferrer, currently ranked fifth in the world, and the ever-popular Bryan brothers are a sampling of the tennis stars that promote the Prince brand. The company also prioritizes backing strong rising athletes such as U.S.’s Taylor Townsend, often called the “new Serena” and Michael Mmoh, as well as Europe’s Lucas Pouille and Kimmer Coppejans (2012’s No. 1 Junior worldwide). Here to Play A critical component of Prince’s business is research and product development. Impressively, Prince pioneered the oversized and long-body racquets, two advancements that I personally benefit from, plus the

Match-Day Eating VALUABLE TIPS ON NUTRITION FOR MATCH DAY: CARY COLLINS, Director of Tennis for Atlanta Country Club Q Eat a normal, balanced meal, slightly high in carbohydrates (such as an egg, bagel and cream cheese or oatmeal in the morning, or pasta in the afternoon or evening), preferably two hours before competing. Q Take a multi-vitamin to ensure mineral balance (electrolyte), and consume 16 to 20 ounces of water each hour prior to, and during, the match. Q Avoid eating food during play unless conditions are more severe or you get very hungry. If you feel you must eat something, select something easily digestible and high in carbs, such as a banana or prepackaged sports gels. Q After play, increase protein for recovery and repair (such as chicken salad or other lean meat and veggies or a sandwich with whole wheat grain bread).

use of boron and graphite. Recent innovations include the O3 and EXO3 racquets, which will have larger frame holes that promote better aerodynamics and more string freedom generating “the largest sweet spot in tennis.” Rumor has it the new Warrior 100T ESP and Tour 100 ESP models will launch at the 2014 US Open this month. Prince’s research and product development center is located in Sarasota, Fla., right next to the world famous IMG Academy, with whom they have a long history of association. But Ballardie said he has been inundated with interest from Atlanta individuals and facilities such as Georgia Tech research departments, with regards to opportunities to work or partner with Prince, and he believes the knowledge and interest from the Atlanta tennis community will only enhance all ongoing Prince efforts. Want a great tip from the CEO? Ballardie made the astute comment that playing tennis with the wrong equipment is frankly, less fun. He explained that many tennis fans – typically the average neighborhood or country club player – watch tennis superstars and try to copy their racquet choices for themselves and are often frustrated with the results. To curb this problem, Prince provides an effective 30-second racquet selector process on their website. One, two or three racquets best suited to one’s game are then suggested. This interactive program can also be downloaded for teaching pros, which can ultimately be helpful to tennis players everywhere. Welcome to the city, Prince. Here, Southern hospitality and competitive tennis meet in a neighborhood known as Atlanta. PN F O R M O R E I N F O R M AT I O N princetennis.com

KIM WILSON, Certified Personal Trainer and Weight Management Specialist Q The better you eat and drink on days you play tennis or not, the better prepared you’ll be. Q You wake up in a state of dehydration, so drink a glass of water upon waking. A cup of coffee is perfectly fine – but don’t overdo as it can be dehydrating. Q My golden rule regarding power bars … if it tastes like a candy bar, than it is. If you want a true, healthy protein bar, it should taste like the earth. My personal recommendation is the Kind Fruit & Nut protein bar. Q For those dieting, eat five small meals a day with fruit in between, and drink a lot of water. Again, it’s a mindset, live game day every day.

British-Born Atlanta Tennis Pro Organizes Annual Wimbledon Pilgrimage Is going to Wimbledon on your bucket list? The Grass Court Experience hosted by Jonathan Lockeretz may be a great option for you to sip a cup of tea and enjoy an intimate group experience with a personal touch, without being over-the-top expensive. Born and raised in London, Lockeretz came to Georgia on a tennis scholarship in 1987, permanently moved here in 1992 and has lived and coached tennis in East Cobb ever since. Since 2007, he has been organizing trips to Wimbledon for many of his Northside clients and their friends. The annual trip includes ground transportation once guests arrive in London (limo service to and from airport and transport to Wimbledon), tennis court usage, beverages and snacks at Surbiton Racquet & Fitness Club (Lockeretz's hometown club) during the duration of the trip, three days of Wimbledon tickets (Centre and No. 1 Court stadium seats, which allow you to see all the outside courts), plus two planned meals. It does not include air transportation or hotel reservations (however the ultra-reasonable rate of £135 per night at Hotel Bosco is available, which includes breakfast and taxes). For more detailed itineraries, contact Jonathan Lockeretz at 678-4646616 or grasscourtexperience@comcast.net. Cheers!

OU ALL KNOW THE DRILL! Once Labor Day

has passed, the focus of our weekends turns to college football, youth sports, ALTA’s fall doubles season and then more college football with an occasional NFL game tossed in. If you’re not tailgating, you’re rubber necking somewhere, or both. Those escapes you enjoy over spring break and during the summer months, particularly along the beaches of the Gulf Coast, are much more accessible and likely less expensive with wait times at your favorite restaurants a mere shell of what they are during high season. So, if your autumn sun doesn’t rise and fall with the world according to Nick Saban, whether or not one (or more) of Mark Richt’s players has run afoul of team rules again or if Paul Johnson’s offense has indeed become outdated, a Gulfside escape from mid-September through November could provide a perfect respite. For tennis enthusiasts, an escape with their team

members may provide the perfect salve for a season gone wrong, and the Destin area offers three of the finest resorts along the Gulf Coast and the Southeast. Some may be aware of the well-regarded TOPS’L Beach & Racquet Resort and Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort, but for our latest tennis venture, we chose Hidden Dunes Beach & Tennis Resort. Tucked off of Hwy. 98 in Miramar Beach, this gem is just east of Destin and little more than one mile from Silver Sands Outlet, The Village of Baytowne Wharf, The Market Shops at Sandestin and Grand Boulevard. The 27-acre natural setting, with a large private beach, includes an enclave of spacious threeand four-bedroom lakeside villas, beachfront condos or Carolina-style cottages, which are available to rent for a perfect fall getaway with your tennis team, family or close friends chosen to assist in your pursuit of fun, sun and relaxation.

Our cottage came complete with a private screenedin porch, perfect for après-tennis refreshments. Our second floor unit included a generous kitchen, wellappointed living room and a full-sized dining area. A master bedroom with private bath, a second bedroom with adjoining bath and a smartly placed loft - available only in second floor units - to accommodate two more overnight guests made for a comfortable stay. We particularly enjoyed the shaded walkways, positioned under a canopy of trees a mere 20 yards from our parking spaces, leading to our unit. And, like many of these 44

units, it was an easy walk to the tennis center, and a comfortable distance to the private stretch of sugar white sands at the renowned beach. Here to Serve enee Broxson, director of tennis, has been at Hidden Dunes for the past nine years, the last three in her current position. She and her staff oversee six championship Rubico clay courts, which are nicely protected from the winds so prevalent along the Gulf. Along with tennis Professional George Cobia and Pro

Shop Manager Anne Toone, Broxson has created quite a following from snowbirds to Southerners alike, who enjoy friendly, personal service. “I truly believe that the level of service we offer is unmatched in the area. If other tennis professionals are sending people [to us] on a regular basis, I believe they respect what we do,” Broxson said. And what Broxson and her staff do, perhaps more

capably than many other resorts in the Southeast, is putting matches together for players of like competency levels. “I would say 90 to 95 percent of the matches that are played here are put together by our front desk staff. A lot of clubs say they will match you up, but then just provide you a list of names to call. We never do that. We are not going to give away someone’s phone number,” Broxson said. “We put the matches together for them. We have a list of on-property and off-property players who enjoy the competition and conviviality.” And unlike other clubs in the area, Hidden Dunes allows tennis players who aren’t staying on property to play at their facility. Hidden Dunes also offers private or semi-private lessons and clinics for larger groups. The tennis center is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily, except for Christmas Day. While March is historically the busiest month of the year, Broxson said that October was a close second in 2013. “October and November [are] just beautiful here,” Broxson said. “We should have no problem matching players up during that time.”

here’s a comforting feeling that comes with the familiar onset of fall. Perhaps it’s the cool, crisp air, the trees awash in color or the festivals dotting the calendar; in any case, this time of year makes us crave a getaway to time-honored traditions in the North Georgia mountains, particularly to Blue Ridge in Fannin County. Here, there is no shortage of cabin rentals available to accommodate any size group or agenda. Filled with galleries, antiques and specialty shops, restaurants and a small-town atmosphere, downtown Blue Ridge beckons visitors to stroll its streets for shopping and dining. Make memories that will last longer than the season with activities like picking your own apples at Mercier Orchards, peaceful fishing along the private waters at Noontootla Creek Farms or for a more permanent souvenir, visiting the landmark Mark of the Potter. For an extra dose of fun, plan your visit around one of the area’s most loved festivals. The opportunities are endless; it’s time to head north!

to toe in oversized rain gear, my children watched anxiously as our fly fishing guide demonstrated how to throw the line. Our intention had only been to spend an hour fishing the well-stocked Trout Pond, as patience and hours of concentration aren’t always within reach at the ages of 8 and 6, but two hours in, they were proving otherwise, undaunted by consistently light rain and elusive fish taking their sweet time to play along. With that first tug on the line, what had started as an introduction to fishing became an afternoon family adventure that no one wanted to end. The added assistance of resident and ESPN’s “Fly Fishing America” host, Chad Foster certainly helped, as every time I looked their way, my daughter was screeching with delight at yet another victorious catch. Four rainbow trout in total (although each time she tells the story, that number increases) and my son caught one rainbow trout before turning his attention to canoeing across the serene water. The notion of packing up the poles was met with resistance and immediate pleas to buy a mountain home and move. We’d come to Lonesome Valley in Cashiers, N.C. for a quick, relaxing weekend, but the idea of not having to leave was a welcome one even for me. Born on the North Carolina coast, I had always dreamed of getaways to the mountains, but the drive was too much

of a hike at the time. In many ways, considering how comfortable we felt playing in the meadows, it was as if we already owned a home beneath the granite face of Cow Rock Mountain.

A Natural Legacy While inspiring to know that one family has successfully preserved this property for four generations, Lonesome Valley is also proof that a good old-fashioned love for the outdoors is not simply good stewardship, it’s a way of life. The 35,000-acre property is the last remaining expanse of a primeval forest that encompassed much of the Highlands Cashiers Plateau when it was purchased by Pittsburgh oilman E.H. Jennings and a group of his industrialist friends in the late 1800s. In the hands of Jennings’ son Richard, a handful of beautiful inns were built, namely The Toxaway Inn on Lake Toxaway, The Fairfield Inn in Sapphire and The Franklin Inn in Macon County. Fast forward another two decades, when Richard Jr., a Yale-educated engineer, returned to take the reins, vowing to protect the existing 800 acres of his family’s property with the help of his wife and their three children. Collectively, his daughter and two sons have managed to ensure the Jennings’ legacy will continue for future generations by following in the ecological footprints imprinted before them with established

Today, the land is a private community where current and future residents can commune with nature on a daily basis as well as enjoy such luxuries as two wellappointed guest cottages, the recently opened Canyon Spa and highly regarded Canyon Kitchen, where renowned Chef John Fleer, formerly of Blackberry Farm, is at the helm. Canyon Cravings The vast sanctuary of green space in the foreground of what is touted to be the largest box canyon east of the Rockies lured us through the entrance gate. Settled just to the left of the sinuous paved path leading from U.S. Highway 64 into the heart of Lonesome Valley community is the newly repurposed Caretaker’s Cottage, better known these days as Canyon Spa. Designed by Sarah Jennings Kowalski to maintain the charming and rustic farmhouse feel of the original Caretaker’s Cottage, guests are welcomed with soothing shades of green, neutral tones and natural wood. The boutique spa, equipped with three treatment rooms, changing rooms and a cozy waiting area complete with porch views of the canyon and a fireplace, offer residents as well as the public a full array of natural treatments, therapies and products, many of which are handcrafted using farm-fresh ingredients from the garden. In addition to seasonal sources, therapists at Canyon Spa use products from Privai, an antioxidant rich, botanically based skincare line. Signature add-on enhancements, such as Body Brush Exfoliation, Warm River Stones and Aqua Gel Face Masque, may be added to services. Pampered Palates Another opportunity to pamper ourselves awaited a stone’s throw away at the well-respected Canyon Kitchen, awarded a 2014 Diners’ Choice Award for Top 100 Scenic View Restaurants in America from OpenTable. Lonesome Valley’s restaurant is housed in what was formerly known as Jennings Barn, outfitted with massive exposed ceiling beams, stacked stone fireplaces both indoors and out, plus numerous barn doors that can be opened to enjoy Mother Nature’s company. While the relaxed and rustic décor initially grabbed our attention, the menu highlighting fresh produce and organic options from the community garden as well as the surrounding locale surely stole the show. It’s no surprise that when Chef John Fleer opened Canyon Kitchen in May 2009, foodie fans flocked to find a table. Never one to win a footrace, I finally pulled up a chair of my own nearly five years later. Printed on the dated menu in front of me was the greeting, “Welcome to Our Table,” followed by a list of delicious options filed under Snacks. Pondering how to order one of each without exuding

As th e sto ry i s to ld, years ago a section of older granite exfoliated from the face of the mountain, revealing the younger, cream-colored image visible today. The logo for Lonesome Valley is a naturally occurring image on the face of Cow Rock Mountain and was chosen in part for being natural, relating to the farm theme of the community and also because one must be more interior to the valley in order to see it fully. Don’t miss catching a glimpse of that.

gluttony proved not to be a problem as the prix-fixed menu included one of each. This is how my husband and I came to introduce the young palates at our table to chicken sausage served with Split Creek goat cheese gnocchi and sweet peas with lively pepper jelly, followed by scallop and crab beignets with pickled ramp remoulade. No doubt, these were “snacks” not soon forgotten. For entrées, we chose rosemary and sage roasted Painted Hills coulotte steak with scalloped spring potatoes, short rib and local shiitake mushroom stew and grilled scallions. Somehow, we still had room - and one more decision to make - for dessert. Would it be the bittersweet chocolate truffle torte, served with brown butter ice cream, cocoa pretzel crunch and bourbon old-fashioned marmalade with charred citrus and strawberries, or the “Ice Cream Soda Shop” comprised of a gingersnap ice cream sandwich, honey and cornbread ice cream, with a strawberrylime soda pop shot? Without a doubt, we, like most lured to Lonesome Valley, left craving more than a taste of what the community has to offer. And after several hours of listening to the kids decide how to squeeze a trout pond, a tire swing, a bocce ball court and a ninehole disc golf course into our back yard, there’s also no doubting we’ll be back. It’s simply a matter of how long we can resist the next big catch. PN

NG360 programs are designed to reduce golf handicaps and the potential of injury and pain, while increasing strength, endurance and flexibility. Tennis enthusiasts, fear not, learning from the best just got better with lessons from Jack DeAndrade, one of Peter Burwash International’s most talented instructors. Hard work on both the course and the court is for naught without sufficient nutrition, which explains why, here again, above and beyond comes standard at The Cliffs. The organic farm provides a unique opportunity for members to enjoy local produce at their home and while dining at The Cliffs restaurants. The renowned culinary team provides cooking classes and demonstrations to assist members in better preparing healthy meals at home, while members also have the option to purchase prepared meals to take and enjoy at their convenience. Speaking of advantages, The Cliffs recently opened The Cabin at The Cliffs at Mountain Park, providing an innovative new clubhouse experience that focuses on functionality to serve today’s golfer with a lifestyle retail shop, full service restaurant and bar, attractive outdoor gathering spots and two tail-wagging bloodhounds that the service team have adopted. The Cabin's finishings and interior décor were inspired by the local Dark Corner history and use local reclaimed textile mill timbers and flooring as well as locally made craftsman designed furniture. Under its new single ownership by Aren-

The Cliffs at Walnut Cove, a community located within 15 minutes of Asheville, N.C., borders the Pisgah National Forest and the Blue Ridge Parkway. Notable amenities here include the Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course with clubhouse, Oak Grove Pavilion, Tudor-inspired tavern and pub, an 18,000-square-foot wellness center, indoor lap pool, outdoor pool, spa, nature center and hiking trails. As if creating topnotch communities wasn’t sufficient, The Cliffs is currently working to build its own business as well as to build relationships within the business community by opening its venues to host corporate events. “While The Cliffs has hosted various events, large and small, over the past 20 years, they have each required sponsorship by one or more of our Members,” said Executive Vice President of The Cliffs Clubs, David Sawyer. “We want to be a partner to the business community in a way that allows us all to benefit. With The Cliffs’ newly opened Gary Player Signature Golf Course, Event Barn and Cabin at Mountain Park; partnership with Hotel Domestique and George Hincapie; and the deep bench of our in-club, on-site catering, food and beverage and hospitality services, we feel that our communities are ideally positioned to create exceptional experiences for our private and corporate event clients.” Homes at The Cliffs range from $500,000 to $4 million in price. In fact, The Big Canoe Building Group is building spec homes in even more areas, including The Bluffs at Ridgeview, Twin Creeks, Choctaw Village and High Gap V. “Big Canoe Realty is pleased with the momentum in home and home site sales this year,” said Mike Rhodes, sales director for Big Canoe Realty. “There has definitely been an increase in the marketplace for more information regarding available properties in Big Canoe. “Our niche is that we offer the production process but deliver a very custom home,â€? said Josh Hilscher, vice president of sales and marketing. “We are a hybrid between fully custom homebuilders and the production homes. We ďŹ ll the gap between. We like to say ‘yes’ to our customers, so if there is something they want in their home that isn’t available in the Design Center, we can source those outside materials for them.â€? But perhaps one of the most important factors for Traton communities is the school district. “If it doesn’t have a great school district, we aren’t interested in building there,â€? Hilscher added. A SUBURBAN ESCAPE

R

ecently, Athens, Ga. was named “one of the 25 best places to retire” by CNN Money.com. It could be for the football, the small-town vibe or the hop, skip and jump that puts it just outside downtown Atlanta. But, at Vintage Farms, it’s also about the promise of stately lots, dense forest and unmatched privacy. It’s the easy afternoons spent mingling in the common outdoor gathering space, gazing from the gazebo or daydreaming in one of their two hanging porch swings. Residents can easily find respite in this Oconee community, which thanks to a stream in the far reaches of the property, actually feels like a nature preserve. Of the 29 original lots for sale, more than half have already been claimed. It speaks volumes that younger families also flock to the high-ranked Oconee County Schools, both placed in the top five percent of high schools in the nation by Newsweek. Plus, health care and retail options have expanded in the past five years with new medical complexes, specialty clinics and in-demand shops relocating to the area around 316 and the Oconee Connector. Work, shop, eat, play and live? That’s a game-winning recipe for residents. vintagefarmsoconee.com

But when you’re a part of a neighborhood like The Divide at Bald Rock and have countless acres of open wilderness waiting once you step foot out of your front door – that, in fact, is a dream come true. “I’ve coined the phrase ‘civilized wilderness’ because what we offer here is the wilderness feel in a secure neighborhood,” said David Bauer, president and visionary for The Divide. “The idea is to come up here and get away. We are not a resort or a country club. What we tried to create here is a place where you can relax and do nothing, or you can join the group and do anything you want.”

A SECOND LOOK

I

n a time when rehab obsessions have reached a new level (thank you HGTV and Pinterest), the idea of repurposing is more than just contagious – it sells. Acadia Homes & Neighborhoods takes that idea to a luxurious level with custom-built communities that started from distressed homesites in popular areas. When the market collapsed, founders Gregg Goldenberg and Thomas Olson sought answers in hopes of providing innovative solutions. Those answers would help them offer something entirely new to the Atlanta-area homebuyer. “It really is all about the home buyer for

us - they not only inspire our imaginative and thoughtfully designed floorplans, but they also make our jobs extremely rewarding, said Laura Mahon, Acadia’s director of marketing. New residents can shop 19 neighborhoods in and around the Metro Atlanta area, with five more in development and many more on the way. New homebuyers will have an opportunity to experience the brand new, 4,500-square-foot Design Gallery, which opened earlier this year. Quality and valueseeking tastemakers can select all of the elements that will make their new Acadia home uniquely their own. That creates a repurposed homebuyer, too. acadiahomes.com

Located off a country road in Seneca, S.C. just below the Appalachian Mountains, this 18,500-acre lake is one of the cleanest in the Southeast and has 300 miles of shoreline with superb views. Originally a man-made reservoir, the area is uncrowded and full of natural beauty that will take your mind back in time to when the Cherokee named it the "the place of the mulberries." The beautiful blue water maintains consistent levels, is surrounded by towering green trees and is an idyllic setting to plant some roots of your own. Lake Keowee Real Estate is here to help you find the perfect place to call home – or your second home. “We are one of the few offices in the area that truly specialize in Lake Keowee real estate,” said Head Broker Andy Lee. “Our name is what we do.” His team is your connection to Crescent Communities, the developer for approximately 40 premiere, waterfront subdivisions on the lake. The area also boasts nearby Yellow Branch Falls with hiking trails, whitewater rafting on the Chattooga River, several golf communities and lovely parks that are an ideal place to teach kids or grandkids the art of fishing. THE HEARTH EXPERIENCE

D

o you remember the good ole days where a lazy Sunday afternoon meant waiting on your bobber to dive below the water? Or, when a curious adventure took you to deep, cavernous destinations you had never explored before? Find that authentic sense of adventure at Cloudland Station – a simple, old-fashioned community with Southern-style architecture boasting the perfect spot for your personalized home away from home. Developer John Tatum calls it the “hearth experience.” He said, “There’s something about knocking about in a small space that’s very renewing. It’s about being all together and having fun, instead of everyone being in their own room.” These spaces are between 1,500 and 2,500 square feet and contain three bedrooms and three baths, but a getaway cabin starts at 800 square feet, with a cozy third-story loft beneath its pitched roof. It’s not the traditional home you leave behind, but one with small spaces and lots to explore. The Getaway cabins start at $100,000, allowing couples and families to buy a great place without spending a fortune and still have all the amenities of a high-end community. Those amenities include what Tatum calls multiple outdoor “rooms” to enjoy – a pool, community fishing hole, volleyball courts, a sweets shoppe, nature trails, bridges, creeks, fire pits, waterfalls, caves and forest. cloudlandstation.com

hen you’re ready to buy a home, there are plenty of big decisions to make, a lot to learn about the property, and now that technology lets educated buyers learn those facts before they buy, it can become overwhelming. It doesn’t have to be, according to Rhonda Duffy and her team of licensed professionals at Duffy Realty of Atlanta. As the No. 1 agent for sold properties in Georgia 10 years in a row and the No. 1 retail listing agent in the U.S., Duffy said, “My purpose is to expose what real estate agents do to list, market and close a home so that homeowners will no longer feel the need to pay someone 2.5 percent of the home’s purchase price. They can keep the money in their own pocket instead. Real estate has changed and it’s my job to tell the public how.” duffyrealtyofatlanta.com

Before the tournament, hit up the “For the Cure” cocktail reception to loosen your swing. Topgolf, Alpharetta, 770-217-0513, agileonthegreen.com

SEASONAL

sips

Bring on the Friday nights gathered around bonfires, neighborhood chili cook-offs and football games. September teases us into autumn, as you’ll likely see the first auburn-colored leaves fall – but Atlanta weather still warrants a cool beverage in hand. Cheers to both traditions and changes ahead.

LEINENKUGEL'S OKTOBERFEST A time-honored celebration of German culture, this 44th annual event parades in Helen, Ga. this month – the longest running Oktoberfest in the country. Celebrate closer to home with a six-pack of Leinenkugel’s Oktoberfest, available through October. This traditional Märzen-style beer has a toasted malt flavor with subtle, spicy notes that is perfect for fall and pairs well with pretzels and ground mustard.

PRAGER NOBLE COMPANION TAWNY PORT

Made from

100 percent Cabernet Sauvignon from the Pope Valley area in northern Napa Valley, the Prager Noble Companion Tawny Port is the winery’s flagship. Founded in 1979, when Jim Prager — an insurance broker in Orange County — fell in love with wine and winemaking, Prager will release its next batch of this marvelous nectar in the next few weeks. Port goes way beyond Christmas Day in front of the fire with a cigar or piece of chocolate, according to Prager’s son, Peter. “Ports are very versatile wines that are grossly overlooked here in the U.S. They’re sweet, but not overly sweet and can accompany savory foods as well as sweets.” For the new release made with 2003 Cabernet grapes and aged for 10 years, Prager recommends a Stilton cheese, butterscotch pudding, caramelized pecans or walnuts, or profiteroles with caramel sauce. Visit the winery online at pragerport.com and see their other exceptional varieties of ports and still wines.

Bring out the dead. There’s nothing more mysterious and rich in history than an old cemetery. This month, the Roswell Historical Society lets the “dead” themselves reveal the story behind their headstones. Learn the life stories of the residents of Roswell Presbyterian Cemetery from society members as they dress up, go into character and regale you with tales from beyond the grave. “Beyond the Stone” starts at 5:30 p.m. on Sept. 13. roswellhistoricalsociety.org Laugh neurotically. Ok, maybe you aren’t neurotic, but the three sisters in “Crimes of the Heart” certainly are. This Pulitzer prizewinning play by Beth Henley showcases their Southern-bred dysfunction through a comedic lens. Sandy Springs’ community theater Act3 Productions opens up its 2014 – 2015 season with “Crimes of the Heart,” running from Sept. 5 through 20.
