MILOS SULFUR MINES, PERCEPTION OF THE INDUSTRIAL LANDSCAPE AS A PERFORMANCE BACKDROP
DIPLOMA PROJECT | GROUP PROJECT | GRADE 9,7/10
ABSTRACT The Sulfur Mines of Milos are one of the most unique landmarks of Greece. The remains of the previous industrial use along with the uniquely beautiful natural landscape cannot leave the visitor unmoved. The historical and on-site analysis we conducted revealed to us hidden aspects about the history of the mines, otherwise forgotten by most. Upon first sight, we realized the need for a unifying gesture that would bring together the individual elements of the Sulfur Mines into a complete architectural proposal. The primary idea of the design consists of two elements: _a predetermined area of intervention _a Z-shaped “thread” that indicates the visitors’ path Our proposal aims to highlight the history of the Sulfur Mines as well as to revive them. The 3 main subjects of it are firstly, an alternative theatrical space whose design is based on both the existing building remains and the topographic features of the area. Secondly, a semi-outdoor structure capable to host the members of any future event taking place in the theater. Lastly, a museum to demonstrate the industrial history of the mines and all the objects found in the area. Our main goal is to bring a new use in the Old Sulfur mines without ruining the nostalgic ambiance that surrounds them. We would like to believe that our subtle design achieves to showcase the existing industrial installation in the best way possible.

SPACIAL ANALYSIS OF THE FACADE; YORGOS AND ELENI MANETAS
THESIS | INDIVIDUAL RESEARCH PROJECT | GRADE 10/10
ABSTRACT This research studies the third dimension of the façade. The aim is to understand the effect of the space it contains and to incorporate it in the design process. The following two questions are brought forward: what is a “spatial façade” and how is it related to the design process? The theoretical analysis discusses issues of space, façade and architectural composition and relies on bibliographical research. The case study involves the analysis of the aforementioned notions through three buildings designed by Yiorgos and Eleni Manetas. It was aided by data collected through interviews with Eleni Manetas and Dimitris Philippides. The first conclusion is that Yiorgos and Eleni Manetas have defied the conventional meaning of the façade though their work. The second proves that the study of a façade is multi-dimensional and is present throughout the design process.

FAMILY HOUSE WITH WORK AREA IN POLYGONO
3RD SEMESTER | INDIVIDUAL PROJECT
The project asked for the design of a 150 m2 house and a 50 m2 work area. In the current proposal, the residents consist of a four member nuclear family and the adults own a bookstore, whick makes use of the work area. The plot is situated in Polygono, Athens, in close proximity to the neighbourhood park, on the junction of Papachristophorou and Paridi Str. The distinctive plot shape, as well as its significant height differences, presented a challenge for the design. The concept is to combine the two plot axes through the intertwinement of several volumes facing multiple directions. Thus, the various house uses are properly separated and the south facing city view is fully taken advantage of. The bookstore takes up the lowest level, featuring a secluded reading area in the backyard. The residential area develops on three split levels above the bookstore, allowing for the communication of all areas. The living room on the middle floor takes in the city view, allowing for the kitchen and dining area to take advantage of the front yard on the north side of the plot. The structure consists of reinforced concrete and white plaster finishes. In the front yard, several ground levels are formed by stone retaining walls. The reading area in the backyard is partially covered by a wooden pergola. A similar pergola also marks the entrance to the bookstore.

ELEMENTARY SCHOOLIN KIFISSIA
5TH SEMESTER | GROUP PROJECT
The project consists of a twelve class elementary school in Kifissia, on an almost square plot. The concept of the design is the seamless adaptation of the school to its surroundings. The surrounding buildings are mainly one to two storeys high and have sloped roofs. Their plots are covered with lush vegetation, resulting in a green front towards the project’s plot. The main idea of the design is to create a park adjacent to the north and west sides, forming a triangle with the plot’s diagonal, which is elevated in the center, creating space beneath it. Two rectangular volumes are inserted in the park at an obtuse angle, mirroring three triangular volumes with sloped roofs on the other side, resulting in an enclosed central courtyard. Finally, the entrance of the school is located near the southwest corner. The three public uses are situated in the three triangular volumes, with the central one housing six laboratories and service rooms in the back. The south volume, being closer to the school entrance, contains the most puclic uses of a library and a mixed-use area, accompanied by a foyer. The northmost triangle, containg the school cafeteria and the necessary service rooms. Last but not least, The classrooms are situated in the rectangular volumes facing north-northwest. The construction is mainly of reinforced concrete with finishings inspired by the surrounding buildings. The sloped roofs are covered by copper sheets, and the walls supporting them are made of brick. Finally, the classrooms also feature brick panles with the addition of white plaster finishes.

PUBLIC THEATER SCHOOL ON PIREOS STR.
7TH-8TH SEMESTER | GROUP PROJECT
The goal of the design is to create an active building, which acts as a theater itself. The plot is situated on Pireos Str. surrounded by numerous education and arts buildings. For this reason, the building itself is inviting to the public, by making use of its public spaces in a theatrical manner. Due to the noisy traffic on Pireos Str., we turned away from it and opened up to the other side. The main entrance, however, is on the busier street for accessibility reasons. The main concept is two opposite movements; a downward and an upward. These indicate how the teaching and other uses are organized across the building. The first leads to the performance areas (theater stage, black box etc), while the second leads to the teaching areas. Another smaller volume is placed vertically to the main one, housing the complementary uses of the school; library and cafeteria. Finally, the atrium between the two buildings is below street level. Additionally, it doubles as an outdoor theater stage, as it is placed in the center of the school, thus allowing for maximum visibility. On the other hand, the upwards movements leads to a roof garden, which offers unobstructed views to both Athens and Piraeus.

ARTISAN’S WORKSHOPS IN KERAMIKOS
6TH SEMESTER | GROUP PROJECT
We were asked to revive the past in the present through the design of a cultural center in a historic plot in Keramikos. We collected all the activities that took place in the same locus several centuries ago and we used them as a starting point for the curriculum; ironworks, glassworks, sewing, wickerwork and pottery. The plot is dominated by archaeological findings, with an ancient road running along the center being the most characteristic. We decided to design a low profile building, which integrates in its surroundings. Two bridges lead to the center of the plot offering views to the archaeological site underneath. The building commplex consists of three volumes. First, a one storey building is situated on the back and houses the artisan’s workshops. Vertical to it, a second volume hovers over the ancient road and contains the exhibition gallery and a gift shop. Access to it is achieved through a central core, which also serves the secretariat. Lastly, a third volume slides into the second level, forming a hybrid cafeteria, able to morph into an open or closed space on demand. The strong presence of archaeological findings served as a major challenge when it comes to the foundation on the building complex. For this reason, we used reinforced concrete columns wherever possible, aided by a long concrete supporting wall, doubling as a signal for the entrance. The supporting elements’ materials are bare and the filling walls are made of translucent concrete. Finally, the buildings are shaded by rotating wooden blinds.
