Step back in time and go on an exciting adventure this October as a young British boy journeys to America. Then at Christmas, in true Polka style, two classic children’s stories will delight families with Hans Christian Andersen’s The Ugly Duckling and E.B. White’s Charlotte’s Web. In 2012, we will take you on a voyage to a faraway place in an adaptation of Michael Morpurgo’s Twist of Gold. Take a peek at what’s coming up and join us at Polka to be part of the fun!

A celebration of books! Saturday 1 - Sunday 9 October 2011 Wimbledon Bookfest is back this October with exciting author and book-related events for both adults and children. This 9-day celebration of books will take place in venues all over Wimbledon including Polka Theatre. Full details of all Wimbledon Bookfest events will be listed on www.wimbledonbookfest.org. Saturday 22 October Join us at Polka as we celebrate Big Draw 2011 and turn ugly ducklings into beautiful swans! Coinciding with our production of The Ugly Duckling, we will be holding two FREE events to create ducklings which will go on display in the foyer throughout the run of the show. These two sessions will be for ages 4 - 6 (must be accompanied by an adult) and ages 7+. Take a leap into the past in this time-travelling adventure August 1963, USA: Martin Luther King prepares to deliver a speech that will change the course of American history forever. But Yolanda, his daughter, isn’t happy that her dad never has time for her. 48 years later, and Raheem is at home in south London. Life seems so unfair: not only is his mum a teacher at his school, she is now applying for the job of head; this is sure to ruin his reputation! But when Raheem falls asleep, he finds himself transported back to the 60s, face to face with Yolanda King. Their friendship takes them on a journey of discovery across decades and continents in this powerful and inspiring production.

The Untold British Civil Rights Movement by Tony Warner Fri 30 Sep • 7.30pm Tony Warner, Director of 100 Black Men of London, returns to our stage as we celebrate 400 years of Black British Civil Rights Heroes. Tony will illuminate this largely untold history in an interactive presentation using music, videos and imagery. It’s summertime and there’s one egg left to hatch. Crack! Peep! Quack!?? What’s this…? Out tumbles the biggest, strangest duckling you’ve ever seen. Honk! Hiss! Argh! Follow Ugly Duckling through all the sights and sounds of the duckyard, as he waddles, swims and flaps his way into the big, wide world. Lost and lonely, will he ever find where he belongs? This brand new adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen’s classic tale is by the director and designer of Goldilocks and the Three Bears and the composer of Skitterbang Island. The Ugly Duckling promises to be a playful and tender production, brought to life with delightful music, movement and puppetry.

TOY EXCHANGE! As part of Polka’s Green Environmental plan we have set up a toy exchange at World of Stories and Music. Bring in any old toys in good working condition that you don’t use anymore and swap them for other ones at the end of the event.

Please take note of the lower age-limits on shows in the Main Theatre. Our experience shows that children below the specified age are more likely to be disruptive and spoil other people’s enjoyment.

Discounts Concessions are available for those registered unemployed or receiving benefits (includes Pensions Credits). A 20% concessionary rate is available for workshops. For group bookings, every eleventh ticket is free. Reduced-price preview tickets, where available, are limited to four per family. Free tickets are available for carers of disabled people.

We are unable to sell tickets for under-age children and reserve the right to refuse them admission. Exceptions to this rule are the designated Watch with Baby performances – look out for this symbol in the Season Diary.

Babies and Toddlers Baby-changing facilities and a buggy park are available at the theatre and café staff will happily warm up baby food.

Reservations We are happy to reserve tickets for you. However we are unable to do this if it is less than a week before the performance. We recommend booking in advance, especially for shows in the Adventure Theatre.
