Schools Polka has a special brochure for schools, call 020 8543 4888 to request your copy

Hello and a big warm welcome to spring and summer at Polka. The season starts with a homecoming. Polka’s production of Charlie and Lola’s Best Bestest Play has been on a packed-out UK tour – and also to Brazil – but returns in February to where it began. Look out for a fun, new trail around the building featuring characters and objects from the show. The summer is all about shipwrecks and faraway islands. In the Main Theatre, we’ve a brilliant new play for children 7-11, Pirates! by award-winning children’s playwright Charles Way. In the Adventure Theatre we’re excited to be working with Little Angel Theatre on a new puppet opera for 3 to 6s, Skitterbang Island, which promises to maintain our tradition of playful, innovative work for Early Years audiences. And look out for our special prices too – £8 or less for both our summer shows! Polka is fantastic value, providing world-class theatre at affordable prices. As always, there’s a wonderful, diverse range of visiting shows in the Adventure Theatre, and a special show in June by master magician Paul Kieve. Paul was the magic consultant on some of the Harry Potter films, so he’s well worth seeing. Our story-writing competition Writing the World returns for its third year, focusing in this World Cup year on South Africa. Will your story be a winner and get performed on the Polka stage?

The man who taught Harry Potter magic! The magnificent and amazing Paul Kieve, master magician and magic consultant on the Harry Potter films is here to perform exciting tricks and illusions to baffle your mind, overload your senses and take you on a tour of the greatest magicians from the past. You’ll soon see why Paul Kieve is consulted by some of the top magicians in the world including Derren Brown. Based on his dazzling book Hocus Pocus, with live music by Daniel Kieve.

Calling all budding writers! 2010 is the third year of our popular storywriting competition for children of primary school age. In previous years we focused on China (2008) and India (2009). In 2010 we want children to write short stories inspired by South Africa. Each year we ask a top children’s author to write a story too, and their story along with the winning entries will be performed on Polka’s stage on 10 July 2010.

Competition Details • www.polkatheatre.com for full competition guidelines and writing tips to get you started • There are three categories: Years 1 & 2 (storyboard of 6 pictures with a caption underneath each one) Years 3 & 4 (short story of up to 500 words) Years 5 & 6 (short story of up to 1000 words) • The competition closing date is 2 April 2010
