PCC NEWS

Message from the Director: A Gateway to the Great Outdoors After decades of dreaming and years of planning and fundraising – it is here! The Jester Park Nature Center will open its doors later this summer. This will be a major attraction we can all be proud of. It will be a beautiful facility, although to a “nature lover” it is still just a building. What we are also excited about is the central theme of this building – a “Gateway to the Outdoors”. This will be a safe, artful, visible and easy-to-access way to engage nature. You will be able to attend a wood duck box class, rent a canoe or kayak for a relaxing paddle or use the nature center as a launch point for the various hiking trails in the park. Tens of thousands of children will have their eyes opened to the world around them, through field trips, environmental education classes, the “critter” displays, and top-ofthe line museum-quality interpretive displays. Families will enjoy a safe and stimulating environment to experience nature together, while retirees gather for wildlife-watching and public programs. Oh, the range of experiences! Volunteering, sitting around a smoky fire, public art, kids playing in a small stream, archery, family gatherings, the list goes on and on. The stories this building will someday be able to tell. We have together built a path to the future for all who will use this facility as the “Gateway to YOUR Great Outdoors!” - Richard Leopold, PCC Director

Experience the New Jester Park Golf Course Jester Park Golf Course is completing a $3.5 million renovation that began in the fall of 2017. The golf course reopened in March 2018. Course construction projects include replacement of the entire irrigation system (golf course, par 3 and driving range); renovations to hole number 11 reconfiguring the ponds to allow for better playability from the tee; and renovations to hole number 17 cutting back the hill to provide for better sight lines from the tee to the green. These renovations are being paid for with golf course enterprise funds. The Clubhouse was gutted and remodeled with an addition of a banquet room and outdoor patio with seating to accommodate golf outings. Renovations include updated rest rooms, a full service commercial kitchen for an expanded menu, reconfigured service counter and dine-in seating. While the golf course opened for the season in March 2018, the irrigation and clubhouse addition will not be completed until May 20, 2018. During this time period, the existing clubhouse will be fully functional and the golf course will have 17 holes available Monday – Thursday while the crews finish the irrigation installation on the individual holes. All 18 holes will be available on the weekends (Friday – Sunday) with full course operations open by May. Additionally, C Corporation (the new golf course contractor) will be funding and installing a new 18-hole miniature golf course in the summer of 2018 next to the practice facility.

Volunteer Spotlight Polk County Conservation’s volunteer spotlight is on Alec Schaufenbuel. Several years ago, Alec began volunteering for restoration workdays at Carney Marsh, clearing brush, downed trees and invasive species along the Gay Lee Wilson Trail and also throughout the park. He soon became a regular at workdays, signed up for Chainsaw Safety Training and began volunteering for workdays throughout the county park system. Alec arrives early to workdays if needed and stays afterwards to help put everything away. If it’s helping run a chainsaw, running a brush mower to clear honeysuckle, buckthorn and Autumn olive, to feeding cut brush into a chipper, Alec is ready. He also helps coordinate restoration efforts with other Park Stewards, even while on vacation from work! His passion and dedication for helping Polk County Conservation with our mission has flowed into his workplace. Alec is the Assistant Safety Director at Neumann Brothers Inc., and has organized company workdays at Jester Park in the past two years. The first being the Jester Park Beautification project. This included re-staining and water sealing the Jester Park Amphitheatre stage, shade structure and all surrounding

split-rail fences. Neumann Bros Inc. provided all of the supplies needed i.e. stain/water sealer, brushes, ladders, scaffolding and volunteers. The second workday consisted of employees beautifying our current office complex. Efforts included scraping and re-painting stair railing, rebuilding cedar board surrounds for an electrical sub-station and a metal recycling storage area. Alec was recently nominated for our Volunteer of the Year award for all his efforts. We appreciate his willingness to help us in various areas of his interests, and his enthusiasm is contagious to those who work around him. 7

The trail will have many bridges, but the one that will be remembered by trail users is the new 440’ bridge that spans the western arm of the lake. This multiple span bridge mirrors the bow-string design concept of the other bridges on the trail, but the two twin piers with observation bump-outs will make the already scenic bridge an enjoyable spot to pause and enjoy the quiet beauty of Easter Lake.

Geocache Your Way Through our Parks and Trails

Jester Park Lodge Your ‘Natural’ Choice

Two years ago we kicked off our Geocaching Parks Challenge and hid 16 special geocaches in our parks and trails. Since then, these geocaches have been found over 1,600 times! Many of them were found easily, others not so much. Between your comments about wildlife sightings, mosquitos, and the weather we loved hearing about your experiences in our parks and trails! “Thank you for putting this challenge together. My 13-year old LOVES to geocache and it is about the only thing that gets him off the couch and away from video games. Bonus was we found new places to camp that we didn’t know existed! Thank you!” - Cindi S. “My friend and I had so much fun today going to parks we wouldn’t have otherwise known about for the Polk Co Parks caches! Thanks for bringing us to Carney Marsh...” – Balonga To learn how you can participate in the Polk County Parks Geocache Challenge, go to www.leadingyououtdoors.org, click on “Things to Do” and select “Geocaching.” Once you complete the challenge, you will earn a special geocoin. By the end of the challenge, we hope you’ll know where there are tons of cool places to hike, bike, camp, and explore!
