THE NATURE

OF A PLACE Message from Polk County Conservation’s Director Richard Leopold

T

here is great excitement surrounding the opening of the Jester Park Nature Center, and rightfully so. It is a decades-old dream finally realized, a “Gateway to the Outdoors” for thousands of people.

But let us not forget, everyone has their own little “nature place.” This is the place you might go to regularly to be at peace, to exercise, to play with friends or family, to hunt or fish, to paddle, ride horses, hike, camp, or just “be.” We at Polk County Conservation are honored to be able to provide and manage these areas, now over 14,000 acres within Polk County. We have over 21 parks and wildlife areas, over 50 miles of multi-use trails, and dozens of other facilities and amenities for us all to preserve, honor, and enjoy the natural world. If you haven’t been to “your” nature place lately, maybe it is time to get out and experience, enjoy, and be inspired by the Nature of a Place.

2018

NATIONAL TRAILS DAY In partnership with the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation, REI West Des Moines, and Peace Tree Brewing Company Des Moines Branch, Polk County Conservation celebrated its 3rd annual National Trails Day event at Jester Park on Sunday, June 3rd, 2018. National Trails Day is an annual nationwide event and occurred on over 2,800 miles of trail throughout the United States in 2018. Volunteers gathered at the Jester Park Nature Center to kick off another successful year full of trail work and fun. This year, volunteers gave it their all towards erosion control efforts by installing check dams, resetting water bars, and resurfacing the Hickory Ridge Trail. Afterwards, the crew gathered together to enjoy live music by Jordan Beem, a cold beverage provided by Peace Tree Brewing Company, a good old fashioned Iowa grill out from the Jester Park Golf Course, yard games, and great company!

A special thank you to local partner Peace Tree Brewing Company Des Moines Branch for their continued partnership on this event! This year, Peace Tree raised over $500 to go towards volunteer efforts along your favorite hiking trails. We are looking forward to celebrating National Trails Day in 2019! 6

GUEST FEATURE

A WEEKEND AT JESTER PARK BY KELSEY WILLIAMS OF SNAPPY CASUAL BLOG

“This was one of the most magical weekends I’ve ever had...for real.” Jester Park is a popular park in Granger, Iowa (about 30 minutes from where we live) with camping, golfing, equestrian activities, hiking, canoeing, fishing, wildlife, and more. Eric’s family rented the four cabins inside the park last month to celebrate his grandparents’ 60th wedding anniversary. Discovery Pond is located right across the road from the cabins and is a great spot for canoeing and fishing. Rooney’s great aunt gave her a Frozen fishing pole and she loved learning how to cast. She wanted to catch a penguin (ha!), but she settled for her first fish! I was so proud of her persistence, and she was thrilled (although she was a little freaked out when it started wiggling around on the pole). This area was totally quiet on Friday evening — it felt like our own private pond while we went canoeing!

Located just north of the Jester Park Nature Center, across from the cabins, is Discovery Pond. 7

Take a hike on one of the many trails throughout Jester Park!

GUEST FEATURE We split up all the meals amongst the adults, and it was so nice to only have to worry about one meal the entire weekend. We cooked breakfast for everyone on Saturday morning and then just got to show up for the rest of the meals. It was glorious! We also made our rhubarb slush for everyone! Nothing beats spending time with family. Rooney learned how to use her fishing pole by her great-grandpa, the cousins ran around barefoot together and pushed each other in the wheelbarrows. Eric went golfing with his grandpa and Rooney and I took a three-hour nap. We roasted marshmallows for s’mores over the fire and stayed up way too late. We also had a bags tournament — won by yours truly and my brother-inlaw. I honestly wouldn’t change much about the entire weekend, except I’d bring a box of Kleenex and stay an extra night. We decided this needs to be a yearly thing and are already setting a date for next year! Read more on her blog at snappycasualblog.com Four modern cabins, located across the road from Discovery Pond, are available year-round.

Explore fun and interesting structures along your hike. The Natural Playscape was a fun morning activity. It’s a play area constructed of natural materials like rocks, water, logs, grassy mounds, etc. We had been to this area once before when Rooney was 3 — which was when we saw the cabins and said we should try to stay there sometime! I think the log stairs are so cool. Finch just wanted to get wet and throw rocks, of course. There are several trails for hiking, and all are rated easy or moderate. We did the Hickory Ridge Trail (.7 miles) and found an amazing teepee made out of sticks. There are also bison and elk herds, which are fun to watch! We didn’t spend much time inside, but the cabins are really beautifully built and so nice inside. Each cabin has a kitchen, two bathrooms, 1-2 bedrooms (sleeping 6-8 people), three entrances, a fireplace, air conditioning, a grill, firewood, a deck, a picnic table, life jackets, and a canoe by the pond. They do fill up fairly quickly, so be sure to book now for next year (or the year after)!

Polk County Conservation Youth Corps’ summer 2018 season was a resounding success. In two 4-week summer sessions, our youth crews, ages 15 - 18, worked on projects to help restore and maintain prairie, woodland, and wetland habitats throughout Polk County Conservation’s parks. Both sessions ended with an overnight tent camping trip to the Loess Hills in western Iowa, where the crews worked on prairie and oak savanna restoration projects. Each day the Youth Corps crews contributed to park maintenance and restoration efforts using a variety of tools and equipment, while learning vital environmental education aspects of our local Iowa natural heritage. Between work projects, the crews enjoyed learning outdoor recreation skills such as canoeing, fishing, and camping. Our Youth Corps crew members worked hard and had fun while making a big impact on Polk County’s public lands this summer! 15

BRIDGE PLAQUE CAMPAIGN

Bridge plaques will be placed along the pedestrian bridge. Great for a holiday gift!

GIVE A GIFT THAT LASTS The 6.2-mile Mark C. Ackelson Trail winding around Easter Lake provides an ideal place for outdoor recreation and scenic views for park visitors. The trail will have many bridges, but the one that will be remembered by trail users is the new 440’ bridge that spans the western arm of the lake. This multiple span bridge mirrors the bow-string design concept of the other bridges on the trail, but the two twin piers with observation bump-outs will make the already scenic bridge an enjoyable spot to pause and enjoy the quiet beauty of Easter Lake.

TWO WAYS TO ORDER:

Along the railing of the pedestrian bridge, individual bridge plaque sponsors are recognized with a plaque bearing their name or company name, friend or loved ones’ name(s).

HISTORY OF PCC PARKS & TRAILS:

THOMAS

NONPROFIT ORG. U.S. POSTAGE PAID AMES, IA PERMIT NO. 14

Steps leading into the creek have been installed throughout Thomas Mitchell Park for easy access into the water.

MITCHELL PARK Nestled in the southeast corner of Polk County rests a small but quaint recreational gem known as Thomas Mitchell Park. This park and all its amenities and natural beauty are matched only by the deep and rich history of its namesake. The history of this park begins in 1816 in Claremont, New Hampshire, with the birth of a young boy named Thomas Mitchell. Spending his youth out east, he began his journey westward after finishing basic schooling and with the passing of his father. He arrived in Iowa in 1844 and was granted permission by Captain Allen (Commander of Fort Des Moines) to become the first settler in what is now Polk County, Iowa. Mr. Mitchell erected a small cabin along Camp Creek and agreed with Captain Allen to build and maintain a bridge across the creek to provide a crossing for travel. The cabin and bridge are now gone, but were thought to originally be located inside what is now Thomas Mitchell Park. Shortly after his settlement, he constructed three more cabins to serve as Inns to provide rest for traveling pioneers and settlers. When Thomas Mitchell learned the railroad was coming near his cabins, he mapped out and created a small town that would become Mitchellville. When the railroad rerouted the tracks south of the town, Thomas Mitchell convinced the residents to pull up stakes and move the town. Structures were removed from their foundations, placed on sleds and dragged about ½ mile south, directly into the path of the railroad.

Seizing the opportunity, Mr. Mitchell built a large hotel to provide lodging for those traveling by rail. In addition to lodging, the hotel served many other purposes for the community including a polling center, classrooms, and post office. Perhaps the most significant role the hotel played was serving as a stop along the Underground Railroad, helping slaves to escape northward. Thomas Mitchell did not manage the hotel, but was instrumental in facilitating and organizing its role along the Underground Railroad. Thomas Mitchell would go on to serve as the first Sheriff of Polk County, a Post Master, County Board of Supervisor, State Representative, and a State Senator. He died on July 5th, 1894, at the age of 78. Originally, the park was named the Camp Creek Recreational Facility but was renamed Thomas Mitchell Park in 1967. At that time, the park was 104 acres. Today, the park has grown to 179 acres.
