A MESSAGE FROM

THE DIRECTOR

P

olk County Conservation manages well over 100+ miles of trails in Polk County, varying from natural or soft surface, equestrian, water, bike, to paved trails. These areas are managed as “linear parks," and in addition to human recreation, these trail corridors serve as important natural areas for pollinators, wildlife, and ecological plant community corridors. The newest addition to Polk County Conservation's trail system is the newly built Mark C. Ackelson Trail at Easter Lake Park. This 4.1 mile loop crosses eight bridges, with the longest bridge spanning 400 feet! While recreating along the trail, you can experience a variety of natural habitats, such as a restored lake, prairies, forests, wetlands, and watershed. With the warmer weather here again, I encourage you to get out, explore, exercise, and immerse yourself in a natural environment. See you on the trail!

Richard Leopold, Polk County Conservation Director

OPENING RECEPTION-NATURALLY IOWA

Wood Sculpture "Brookie" by Kelly Salow.

Photography "Aurora Borealis Over Saylorville Lake" by Gary Hoard.

Naturally Iowa Jester Park Nature Center's Art Gallery

OPENING RECEPTION M AY 9 | 6 - 8P M

P

olk County Conservation and the Jester Park Nature Center are pleased to present, Naturally Iowa. This art exhibition highlights the work of two native Iowans, photographer Gary Hoard and wood artist Kelly Salow. There will be wine and refreshments as well as an opportunity to meet the featured artists at the Opening Reception on Thursday, May 9, from 6–8 pm, at The Galleries at Jester Park Nature Center, located in the lower level. Photographer Gary Hoard will showcase a collection of recent photographic images on metal of Iowa plants, birds, and animals in their natural environments, as well as Iowa landscapes. His photography evokes the feeling of peace and solitude, bringing us closer to nature. Hoard has been a photographer for over 50 years, with a special interest in nature and focus on the biology and habitats of the plants and animals he captures through his lenses.

Wood Artist Kelly Salow’s work inspiration is bedded deep in the Midwest timbers and river valleys he surrounds himself with. By combining acrylic painting, soft open grain carving, and exotic wood artistry, his award-winning wood designs provide a glimpse into the beauty of Iowa landscapes. With each of his pieces brought to life by a series of premeditated steps, Kelly describes his workflow as follows: “First you must select the correct piece of natural wood that will complement the project. Next comes the small power carving devices and hand sanding. Lastly, hand painting and airbrush techniques polish a piece to completion.” The Naturally Iowa exhibition will be on display from May 1 to August 28 during Jester Park Nature Center hours. Hours can be found at: www.JesterParkNatureCenter.com.

“When I wasn’t hunting or fishing, I was camping and hiking. This led me to drawing and painting, and eventually, woodwork.” - Kelly Salow

ART TRAIL Explore local art as you adventure outside the Jester Park Nature Center - Coming soon to the Jester Park Nature Center! -

The Jester Park Sculpture Trail will feature 10 unique nature-inspired public works of art. Each sculpture will be located along a beautiful nature trail beginning at the front entrance of the Jester Park Nature Center. Take a hike and discover each art piece as the trail leads you around the pond, over the creek, through the woods, and eventually back to the nature center. During the hike, you will discover sculptures meant to educate, inform, and nurture our fascination and curiosity about the natural world. About half of the sculptures have been fabricated and are already installed with a few more yet to come. All the sculptures are anticipated to be completed and installed by the fall of 2019. Don’t miss our next issue of Nature News (September – December 2019) for more information about this exciting project. GIVING OPPORTUNITIES Make a Difference in Your Community

FRIENDS OF JESTER PARK EASTER LAKE PARK BRIDGE PLAQUES The 4.1-mile Mark C. Ackelson Trail winding around Easter Lake provides an ideal place for outdoor recreation and scenic views for park visitors. The trail has many bridges, but the one that stands out the most to trail users is the 440’ bridge that spans the western arm of the lake. This multiple span bridge mirrors the bow-string design concept of the other bridges on the trail, but the two twin piers with observation bump-outs make the already scenic bridge an enjoyable spot to pause and enjoy the quiet beauty of Easter Lake. Along the railing of the pedestrian bridge, individual bridge plaque sponsors are recognized with a plaque bearing their name or company name, friend or loved ones’ name(s). A $130 donation entitles you to a plaque until all spaces have been sold. Each plaque is engraved aluminum with satin brush finish measuring 4”w x 21⁄4” h. Sponsors may include up to two lines of text with 17 characters each, including spaces, for a total of 34 characters per plaque. An additional line at the top of the plaque, reading — In Memory of — may be added upon request at no charge. Purchase your bridge plaque today at: www.GreatOutdoorsFoundation.org/EasterLake 19
