Since last month, Ukraine’s nightmare neighbour has reduced swathes of its towns and cities to rubble through bombardment, displacing whole populations in doing so, resulting in millions of Ukrainians being forced to leave their homeland. Despite the unimaginable pain and suffering which has been inflicted on Ukraine, their peoples’ resilience, stoicism and bravery seems to have forced Russia into peace talks – their show of strength in standing up to aggression, hopefully succeeding where diplomacy, has hitherto failed. With record cases of COVID now being recorded, (215,000 cases in just the three days), ‘life after COVID’ actually means ‘learning to live with COVID’, much as we do with the flu or common cold. What all this means for polo is hopefully a return to normal: evidenced by the summer fixture list in the UK already burgeoning with polo being played at all levels and the after parties for which polo is traditionally so well-known, being planned. The Polo Times string of ponies are now in full work with their first slow matches only a few weeks away. I know I speak for anyone who’s hooked on polo in saying, we really cannot wait to fully get back in the saddle. As young homebred Monkeynut (Nevada, Uruguayan dam x Fair Go Edgeworth sire) approaches his second birthday, he will shortly being going off to polo youngsters’ boarding school run by the talented Charlie Agar. A more relaxed youngster we have never known, so we hope that under Charlie’s tutelage, Monkeynut will impress the teachers and return with some A*s under his girth. As always, I hope you will find much to enjoy in this issue of Polo Times – a conclusion of polo played overseas, dovetails with the start of the 2022 season at home; our editorial pages are aimed to provide nuggets of detail to interest all our readers. In addition, the businesses who advertise, and, in particular, those people that run them, are a wealth of polo knowledge in themselves. I would pretty much guarantee that any question you might have about your polo or your ponies, would be quickly answered by contacting our advertisers.

30 Year Rivalry Continues
Audi Wins first 26 goal title of the season

he World Polo League is the only 26 goal outside of Argentina and is the brainchild of Marc and Melissa Ganzi who wanted to preserve the highest level of polo in America after the US Triple Crown was reduced to 22 goal. The World Polo League is now in its fourth year and attracts international players from around the globe, with some of the most recognisable faces in polo taking to the fields at Grand Champions Polo Club. The 26 goal series begins in February with The All-Star Challenge and continues through to May when the World Polo League culminates with the Beach Polo World Cup, Miami Beach. The All-Star Challenge Final saw two old opponents, White Birch and Audi, continue their 30year rivalry. Throughout the qualifying stages, opponents had been unable to neutralise White Birch’s four goal handicap advantage, and in the first chukka White Birch added to this advantage with a field goal from Lerin Zubiaurre which added to the pressure on Audi to react. And react they did, the second chukka was all about Audi with five consecutive goals equalising the scores, 5-5; with both teams on an even keel for the first time in the Final, Audi were determined to keep White Birch contained and with a goal apiece for each side, the second chukka ended with the scores resolutely tied, 6-6. The third chukka saw each team’s defences tested, but the scores stayed tight with Audi taking a narrow 9-8 lead going into half-time. However, the fourth chukka saw Audi pull out all the stops and begin to pull away, outscoring White Birch 5-1 to take a 14-9 lead, from this moment on Audi knew they had control of the game, with White Birth failing to bring themselves back into the action. Audi’s scoring spree continued in the fourth and fifth chukkas and despite two last-minute goals from White Birch in the final chukka, it was Audi who lifted the trophy with a score of 17-12.

Audi were clear favourites going into the Final with not only a win earlier in the league in The All-Star Challenge, but also an undefeated record in The Founders Cup qualifiers, with the Final pitting husband versus wife as Marc Ganzi took to the field for Audi while Melissa Ganzi lined up for Seminole Casino Coconut Creek.
Seminole Casino Coconut Creek took an early 2-1 lead thanks to the efforts of Gonzalito Pieres and Juan Martin Zubia, however goals from Ganzi and Jeta Castagnola saw the scores tied, 3-3 at the end of the second chukka. Audi’s throw-in dominance continued, overall they secured 80 per cent of the throw-ins, and their fifth chukka saw the team at full performance and they took an 11-7 lead going into the last chukka. The combination of Paco de Narvaez and the Castagnola brothers came into full force in the final phase of the match, while Seminole Casino Coconut Creek were only able to create two more goals. Ganzi commented on his team’s win, "I think we've always demonstrated that we can capitalise on other teams' mistakes. The boys jumped on a couple loose plays and we got two quick goals of two plays where they should have scored goals.” This was the second consecutive Founders Cup title for Ganzi, Jeta Castagnola and de Narvaez who took the title in 2021 as part of the winning Richard Mille team.

Inspired Arena Polo Test Match for The Bryan Morrison Trophy

England Triumph Over Ireland T First re-match since 2015
he Inspired Arena Polo Test Match for The Bryan Morrison Trophy is played in memory of Bryan Morrison, a fitting tribute to a pioneer of English arena polo, who also secured many of the top British titles including The Prince of Wales Trophy, The County Cup, Roehampton Cup, Archie David and Eduardo Moore Cup. Due to Covid-19 the event had suffered a two year hiatus, but with brighter times upon us, supporters were keen to cheer on Ireland and England at All England Polo Club, Hickstead. This was the first time the two international sides had met since 2015, with Ryan Pemble the only player featuring in both the 2015 and 2022 line-ups, while a changing of the guard saw 2015 England’s Chris Hyde replaced by his son, Jack Hyde, for the 2022 England line-up. Their last meeting had seen an exciting win for England, would they be able to repeat their success this year? Before the Test Match got underway the HPA Arena Colts Under 19s showed the talent of tomorrow, which saw both teams tied, 8-8, please turn to our Youth pages to read more. Following a quick refreshment break and rolling of the arena, the teams representing

England and Ireland were presented to the several hundred strong crowd. England were first out of the blocks and by the end of the chukka had established a four goal lead of 6-2, thanks in no small way to some two-pointers. The second and third chukkas continued in a similar vein, with Jack Hyde’s seemingly insatiable thirst for goals continuing, backed up by Tom Morley’s long range shots. By the end of the third chukka England had established a seemingly insurmountable lead of 14-6. However, the Irish captain Ryan Pemble had other ideas and brought out two fantastic horses to take the game to the English in the last. Galvanising his team, Ireland scored 7 goals in the last chukka, but England’s lead was just too great and the game ended with a final score of 16-13 to England.

Narrow Win for UAE Polo Perfect birthday gift for HH Sheikha Maitha

he Dubai Polo Gold Cup Series is held under the patronage of HH Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai and includes five tournaments: The Silver Cup, The Polo Masters Cup, The Gold Cup (Dubai Open), The Dubai Challenge Cup and The Dubai Cup. So far in the series Bin Drai secured The Polo Masters Cup with a win over Ankora and Habtoor Polo defeated UAE Polo 9-7 in The Bentley Emirates Silver Cup Final. The Dubai Gold Cup is the third leg of the series and this year’s Final saw a rematch from The Bentley Emirates Silver Cup with UAE Polo vs Habtoor Polo once again; would UAE Polo be able to turn the tables and secure themselves a win? Before this question could be answered, the Subsidiary Final saw Zedan Polo vs AM Polo for The Auto Millennium Cup. Tomas Panelo, the top scorer of the match, opened the scoring and the next few minutes saw

a rapid exchange of goals from both sides. Zedan took control from the end of the second chukka and refused to relinquish their advantage for the remaining chukkas. AM Polo fought back, with Alejandro Muzzio levelling the scores 9-9 early in the fifth chukka and as both teams scrambled to take the win, Panelo managed to dodge through AM Polo’s defences and secured the win, 11-9. Going into the Final, both UAE Polo and Habtoor Polo were looking incredibly strong and the result could have gone either way, perhaps unenviably, UAE Polo had the added pressure of it being HH Sheika Maitha’s birthday. Tommy Beresford opened the scoring, but the lead didn’t last as the evenly matched teams levelled the scores repeatedly throughout the first two chukkas. From the third chukka onwards UAE Polo turned up the heat, but each time they took the lead, Habtoor Polo were hot on their heels with an answer. Habtoor Polo’s Bautista Bayugar levelled the scores to 8-8 with just 30 seconds left on the clock, which pushed the match into an extra chukka. Beresford, later named Most Valuable Player and top scorer of the Final with five goals, took the ball to goal to secure the win and the coveted title for UAE Polo.

PADDOCK POWER POWERING PERFORMANCE
PADDOCK POWER ORIGINAL
Horses at grass or in training thrive on PADDOCK POWER ORIGINAL lick with added protein and a full spectrum of vitamins and minerals. This is no ordinary lick it’s a balancer in a bucket! Paddock Power will help your horse prepare for the winter months by supporting it’s immune system and giving it the internal tools to fight mud fever, rain scald and the annual ailments over the winter months. We all like to watch our budget over the winter but sometimes you need to invest to reap the rewards. By supplementing the grass and hay/haylage over the winter with Paddock Power you can really boost your horse’s resilience to our unpredictable English winters. Right now, our horses are changing their coats from summer to winter, and this requires a lot of energy, vitamins, and minerals. These vitamins and minerals are not abundant in the traditional English pasture, and most of us have stopped hard feeding our horses. Paddock Power Original will supplement what we are no longer getting from hard feed. Most horses are running on reserves by the end of a full season, whatever the level, and need a pre-winter boost! Paddock Power provides what they need to help them have a fruitful winter and return in the spring recharged and eager to play.

After 1994, there was a hiatus in the tournament, which was resumed in 2014 and won by Cambridge A; it has since been played continuously and last year saw Mystery Creek secure the prestigious trophy. 2022 saw an impressive 26 teams entered in the week-long polo extravaganza at Auckland Polo Club which included polo across all levels, with several trophies up for grabs alongside The Savile Cup.

Dundas were awarded the win on a technicality
The inaugural WPL Tommy Hitchcock Legacy Memorial benefitted Hospital Albert Schweitzer Haiti (HAS), a 200 bed hospital based in Haiti's Lower Artibonite Valley which was founded in June 1956 by Hitchcock's brother-in-law Dr. Larimer Mellon and his wife Gwen Grant Mellon. Brookshire Polo started off with a 3-0 lead and led for the first half, going into half-time, 6-5. The second half was a different affair, with the lead changing hands three times, Gonzalito Pieres, who was later named Most Valuable Player, converted a penalty to tie the scores at 9-9, swiftly followed by another penalty conversion to take the win, 10-9. On Sunday 6 March defending champions, Dundas, secured The 32nd annual Sieber Memorial 12 Goal Tournament Sunday at Jan Pamela after an unusual turn of events; when it was discovered Llavallo used the same horses he played in a 12 goal Semi Final game with Novo Polo, Excalibor forfeited the win. While Llavallo was a legal player substitution, players may not use the same horses for two teams according to the USPA rulebook. Dundas’ Sarah Siegel Magness commented, "Having ethics in polo is really important because we all pay a lot of money and spend a lot of time playing polo, the last thing we want is to be beaten because somebody had an advantage. For me, the moral of the story is yes, I am thankful we won because horse power is No. 1 in polo so if you are playing

horses that shouldn't be playing it's an advantage. If somebody beats me fairly I am the first one to shake their hands. It's a lesson to all of us to follow the rules and hold ourselves to a higher standard." Beverly Polo defeated Quite on Z, 10-8 in The Top Pony 12 Goal Final at Grand Champions Polo Club, rallying in the last chukka to take the win. Lucio Ocampo was named as the Most Valuable Player and commented, "I am very happy for my team, we never gave up and supported each other." Mele, played by Hilario Figueras in the sixth chukka and bred at his father Nacho Figueras' Cria Yatay breeding farm in Argentina, was Best Playing Pony. The WPL Tommy Hitchcock Legacy Memorial Final Teams: Seminole Coconut Creek Casino (26): Melissa Ganzi (0), Gonzalito Pieres (10), Juan Martin Zubia (8) & Alejandro Novillo Astrada (8) Brookshire Polo (23): Scott Wood (0), Rufino Bensadon (8), Nic Roldan (8) & Pancho Bensadon (7) The Top Pony 12 Goal Final Teams: Beverly Polo (12): Wil Ballhaus (-1), Hilario Figueras (5), Keko Magrini (3) & Lucio Ocampo (5) Quite on Z (12): Alecia Seidler (-1), Leon Schwencke (3), Felipe Vercellino (7) & Jose Meirelles (3)

Ghantoot Racing & Polo Club On Sunday 27 March, Bin Drai secured an 11-6 win against UAE Polo in The HH President of UAE Polo Cup. Both teams held unbeaten records going into the Final and UAE Polo have enjoyed a successful season so far, yet it was Bin Drai who dominated from the outset, managing to outscore UAE Polo 4-0 in the opening chukka. UAE Polo managed to score a few goals in the last chukka, but Bin Drai’s earlier advantage proved too much to overcome and Bin Drai took home the title. Tomás Panelo, who was the top scorer of the tournament with

awaii Polo Life were back in contention with a Final’s place for the fourth year running, but the question was would they bring the form to overturn last year’s defeat at the hands of BTA/The Villages and bring their ‘A game’ to win their third US Open Women’s Polo Championship in four years? In the end it was clear to all that they were somewhat in a class of their own, securing an 8-3 victory against Blue Water on Field 1 at the International Polo Club Palm Beach. Hawaii Polo Life led from start to finish, controlling the possession from the opening throw-in to outscore, out play and outmanoeuvre Blue Water. This year saw a change in the line-up for Hawaii Polo Life with the addition of 21-year-old Cecily Coors bringing an injection of energy and an eagerness to learn to the established team. With a background in show jumping, Coors made the switch to polo only a year-and-a-half ago. Hailing from Denver Polo Club, she has progressed at an incredibly quick rate, as Pam Flanagan explains, “I knew she was a really strong rider from her horse background. If things are getting stressful on the field, [instead] of shutting down, it builds her up. The more intense the game and the closer we are, the more she’s pumped and trying to do her job. She’s got this intensity about her. She’s not intimidated by other players. We’re putting her up against 5, 6 goal players and she is taking them out”. As the match progressed, three of Hawaii Polo Life’s teammates were already on the scoreboard, the fourth chukka was Coors’ time to shine. Receiving a skilled pass from the team Captain Jackson, Coors made the most of her opportunity and took the ball straight to the goal for her first goal of the tournament and biggest career accomplishment to date. “I’ve dreamt about that on repeat,” Coors commented, “I would wake up and say, ‘If I could get a goal in this tournament, it would mean so much.’ I had a chance earlier in the game and missed. After I got back to the tent during halftime I said, ‘if I get a chance again, I’m not missing’… I tapped it three times and luckily it went through the goal. It’s the best feeling in the whole world!” With limited penalties, the match was open and fast flowing throughout, with Hawaii Polo Life really utilising their exceptional horsepower and capitalising from the outset on the experience and dynamism of both Hazel Jackson and Mia Cambiaso. 36

2022 U.S. Open Women’s Championship Playing three La Dolfina horses in the match Jackson enthused, “It’s absolutely crazy for me to be riding these horses, I can do different things on the field, which I couldn’t before. I’ve never run that fast in my life! It’s too fast for me! You have to stop riding ‘sensitive’ because they just go. I’ve been riding these horses for the past three games, and it’s taken me a while to get used to them, but I love it! To have this option from J5 Equestrian, Chris Dawson, and the Cambiasos, it lets you do your thing.” With the outcome seeming never really in doubt going into the final chukka Hawaii Polo Life were 7-1 up, but not content with that Jackson struck again from distance for her third goal of the game. Despite this rather daunting barrage of goals, Blue Water displayed incredible resolve to keep generating chances. Struggling on offense due to their efforts to keep their defensive play tight, Blue Water finally got a break with a penalty conversion from Sheehan tapping in her first goal of the day on a Penalty 2. Team Captain Brit Izzy Parsons found the posts for Blue Water’s first field goal of the day, cutting the deficit to five goals. Despite Blue Water’s grit and determination, the complete Hawaii Polo Life takeover was too much to overcome. So, a relentlessly strong performance from Hawaii Polo Life made relatively

short work of their skilled and prepared opposition in the form of Blue Water. Showcasing impressive defensive skills which were combined with strong attacking inputs from each one of their players it was a strong performance from the ladies in black who looked dominant throughout and well deserving of the win. A stellar performance from Jackson had seen her score three goals, whilst Blue Water limited to just one field goal for the entire Final. We may seem to be biased towards 10 goal Brit Hazel Jackson, but the tournament
Women’s Polo
Best Playing Pony: Fax Bionica, an 11-year-old black mare, played by Mia Cambiaso and owned by J5 Equestrian & La Dolfina
stats speak for themselves – Jackson averaged 4.8 goals per game during the tournament, playing at the Number 4 position, versus Blue Water’s back Meghan Shader-Jumet clocking up only a half goal. The rest of the team were comparable on goals scored, so it was clearly the ‘Jackson effect’ at back that made the difference and quite rightly she was named Most Valuable Player. Hawaii Polo Life’s efforts and their decisive 8-3 win were rewarded with a $30,000 prize money fund for the first time in the tournament’s history. Happy days!

HPA Arena Colts at Hickstead
Six U-17 players competed for the trophy
On Saturday 5 March, before The Inspired Arena Polo Test Match for The Bryan Morrison Trophy the HPA Arena Colts showed the talent of tomorrow. With a 4 goal team playing a 3 goal team there was a two goal handicap start on the scoreboard to the Light Blues. The first chukka ended 4-3, but by half-time the Light Blues had restored their two goal advantage and led 5-3. The third chukka saw Rafi Bruckner, the youngest player on the field, score three goals for the Light Blues with only one in reply for the dark blues. So, the last chukka started with a four goal gap between the teams. However, as is so often the case in arena polo, a large gap can be rapidly made up and with Hector

The Digestive System The unique equine anatomy
The horse’s digestive system can be split into two main sections, fore gut and hind gut: 1: Mouth to small intestine is similar to that of single stomached animals, such as man, dog, or pig. 2: After the small intestine, it is similar to the rumen of animals such as the cow and goat, the hind gut. So, the equine digestive system is therefore unique, and affects the way we should feed.

I thought I would spend this issue revisiting the ‘all important’, very unique and often overlooked digestive tract. Putting our human perceptions of eating onto the horse doesn’t really do them any justice, hence why I am often found talking about: meal sizes, ad lib forage, no muzzles etc – it’s all 46

to look after the digestive system and make it function to its absolute best – allowing the horse to maintain condition and perform to its best. Players are often working on their fitness and nutrition as athletes, so why wouldn’t you for the horse?
Lips are strong, mobile and sensitive, allowing the horse to be selective about what it eats. Incisor teeth are located at the front of the mouth and are used to cut grass or hay. Molars are positioned at the back of the mouth for chewing and grinding the food to begin the digestion process. Chewing involves side to side, and up and down motion of the jaw. The number of chews depend on the food type – hay takes approximately four times longer to chew as a similar weight of concentrate feed. So, a horse receiving lots of concentrate feed and little hay will spend less time chewing. Unlike man and dogs, saliva is only produced when the horse chews. Saliva coats the food, which makes it easier to swallow and slide down the oesophagus. Its other important role is to act as a buffer in the stomach against gastric acid. A 15hh horse can produce the equivalent saliva of around five to six big bottles of coke (10 to 12 litres) per day when allowed free access to forage.
Oesophagus ·

protective layer to prevent gastric acid from damaging the stomach lining. The top region of the stomach has no protective layer, so relies on the presence of fibre to act as a physical barrier to soak up the acid to prevent it from being in contact with the stomach lining for prolonged periods. A lack of fibre in the diet can result in the acid damaging the stomach lining and causing painful ulcers.
Small Intestine · A horse’s stomach is approximately the size of a rugby ball, it is important not to overload the stomach
Stomach · ·

·
The oesophagus joins the stomach where a valve (sphincter) is positioned, which stops digesta leaving the stomach. The stomach is approximately the size of a rugby ball in a 15hh horse, it is muscular and relatively rigid and therefore cannot stretch. Food remains in here for approximately 20 to 30 minutes to begin being broken down by gastric acid. Glands in the bottom half of the stomach secrete approximately 1½ litres of gastric acid per hour, alongside digestive enzymes, to break down food/digesta. The bottom half of the stomach has a
· ·
The small intestine is about 15 – 22m long and about 7 – 10cm in diameter, which ensures as much food/digesta comes into contact with the gut wall to be absorbed into the bloodstream. Protein, fats, soluble carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals are absorbed here. Food passes along the small intestine and reaches the caecum within 45 minutes to three hours.
The caecum and large intestine are grouped together as they are the site of fibre digestion. Insoluble fibre, such as that found in grass and forage, can only be broken down (fermented) by microorganisms such as bacteria and fungi found in the hindgut. They are also responsible for producing vitamins B and K. Fibre digestion produces energy for work.
Knowledge
Caecum ·
·
Is likened to the human appendix, is large and around one metre in length. Microorganisms such as bacteria and fungi are responsible for fermenting (breaking down) the plant material. After about five hours the digesta is moved into the large intestine.
Large Intestine · ·
The large intestine is between 7 – 8m long and food can be held there for up to 36 – 72 hours. As well as digesting fibre, the large intestine is the site of water and electrolyte absorption. Fibre attracts water and electrolytes – the more fibre in the hindgut, the greater the quantity of water and electrolytes that can be held.

In rare cases, a bone spur can break off and get stuck in the lining of the joint. This is called a ‘loose body’ and it can lock up the joint and make it hard to move.
Diagnosis
Hot Spurs Intraoperative presentation of a spur after fracture of the clavice and plate fixation
When bone spurs hurt
Bone spurs are common hard bumps mostly present where tendons and ligaments insert. They can be present in all body parts but mainly at the extremities. Initially they start small but most are painful and increase in
size over time. Simple calcifications can also disappear without treatment. The most common cause of bone spurs is joint damage from osteoarthritis or degenerative joint disease. The cushioning between your joints and the bones of the spine can wear down with age. Rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and gout can also damage your joints.
Bone spurs are first evaluated by the general practitioner who will likely refer you to a specialist, such as a rheumatologist or an orthopaedic doctor. Rheumatologists specialise in joint problems. Orthopaedic doctors focus on the musculoskeletal system. Initial conventional X-rays can help to diagnose the bone spur better. Additional examinations which can be used to diagnose bone spurs include: - CT scan. It’s a powerful X-ray that makes detailed images inside the body. - MRI. This uses powerful magnets and radio waves to create images of organs and structures inside the body.
Bone Spur Treatments
To relieve pain and reduce the swelling, local or oral non-steroid pain relievers can be prescribed (Acetaminophen, Ibuprofen, Naproxen). There can be side effects, especially if large doses are used for a long time.
Symptoms of Bone Spurs

You might not realise you have a bone spur until an X-ray is performed when looking for another condition. They only cause problems when they press on nerves, tendons, or other structures in your body. Other symptoms can be: - Pain in the affected joint - Pain or stiffness while bending or moving the affected joint - Weakness, numbness, or tingling in arms or legs if the bone spur presses on nerves in your spine - Muscle spasms, cramps, or weakness - Bumps under your skin, seen mainly in the hands and fingers Symptoms might get worse when the affected joint is exercised. Playing Tips
Playing tips with Rege Ludwig Offside Neck Shot Hitting Checklist
Renowned polo coach, Rege Ludwig gives his expert advice on how to get more out of your game In my early teen years, I had the daily privilege of watching and studying 8 goal player Ray Harrington train polo horses, stick and ball and play polo. Because Ray could hit the ball equally well on either side, he was given the nickname of Mister Inside/Outside. One of Ray’s signature shots was the offside neck shot. I recall watching him execute one in a Wednesday night 20 goal arena game. He was riding his famous arena mare, Red Wings, with both going all out relative to intensity of effort. Ray hit an offside neck shot on a 160-degree angle back to his left, straight into the goal. He leaned so far forward, out, and down to where his right shoulder was within inches of Red Wing’s right ear when the mallet head contacted the ball. I remember thinking, “For sure he is going to fall off”. However, Red Wings made an unbelievable move of dipping down, speeding up, and moving right to come up underneath Ray. When all was said and done, Ray was still in the saddle, the goal had been scored, and the two famous polo players returned to midfield together for another throw-in. Discounting the phenomenal move of Red Wings, I knew I had to figure out how Ray made such an unbelievable shot. The next day, while not really knowing what I was doing, I started working on figuring out how to hit an offside neck shot on that sharp of an angle under game conditions. That project took me years to figure out, and have the opportunity presented to me of using it. Sure enough, about fifteen years later I had the opportunity to hit the same shot in a twelve-goal game I was playing in, in Juarez, Mexico. The opportunity presented itself so quickly that I had no time to think about how to hit the shot. All I could do was respond to the moment, and hope the last fifteen years of work would pay off. Fortunately, I hit the same shot to score the goal under similar circumstances as Ray Harrington; with the differences being, I didn’t have Red Wings, and mine was in a less quick outdoor game. Immediately after having hit that shot, I was aware of the position I had been in on top of my horse when I hit the ball. It was the same position I remember seeing Ray in on Red Wings that memorable night approximately fifteen years earlier. Today, thirty years after my shot, I still remember it as though it happened yesterday. I was amazed at how easy it was to do. I 50

understood instantly that it had a lot to do with my being correctly positioned in the saddle Immediately I knew I had to work hard at understanding every aspect of how that shot was made so I could apply that knowledge toward practicing all shots until each is being executed as easily as that neck shot was. Within the process of figuring out how to hit each shot, I created a Hitting Checklist, that is intended to have you position the horse to the ball, and yourself in the saddle in a manner that is consistent with the shot to be hit. My intention with that style of teaching is to allow working on individual aspects of the hitting process until each is being executed correctly. And, when one aspect is being
executed correctly, it is on to the next, and the next, until the shot is being executed with consistent effectiveness. The Hitting Checklist as applied to the offside neck shot is as follows: Step 1. Approximately forty yards from the ball pick to the left of the ball that is consistent with hitting the angle of the offside neck shot you intend to hit. Depending on the desired angle of the neck shot, that distance from the ball varies, for example: If an approximate forty-five-degree angle offside neck shot is intended, ride the horse to have its right front foot land five to six inches to the left of the ball, and approximately twelve inches behind the ball. Under those conditions, the horse’s nose will be approximately fifteen inches to the left of the ball upon arriving at the ball.

Hip Mobility The UK Summer season is approaching so now is the time to begin your pre-season rider fitness programme. Chukka Wellness clients have begun their pre-season training which includes a lot of functional exercises, cardio and mobility routines. After having a few months off from riding; some players may have experienced joint and muscle tightness. We recommend starting back up your mobility routines with focus on the hips, back, shoulders, wrists and ankles.
Today we want to highlight the importance of having mobile hips as the joint is home to many muscle origins and insertions. It allows us to walk, run and jump as well bearing the body’s weight and force of the hip and leg muscles. If these muscles are not used or overused incorrectly, the hip area can become tight and weak causing secondary effects such as a bad back, a pulled muscle or compromise posture. The hip joint takes a beating during a game of polo too. Not only is the player

They are sitting down in the saddle and thrusting up with the hips in preparation for every shot. Here our client pro polo player American 3 goaler Agustin Arellano will be showing you 5 simple but effective hip mobility exercises that can be performed before jumping into the saddle or in preworkout warmup.
Inner Thigh Rockers Start on both knees with your hands on the ground in front of you. Fully extend one leg out to the side ensuring the foot is in line with the other knee. Gently rock your hips forwards and backwards to open up the pelvis. 20-30 rockers per leg
Lunge with Knee Circles Start in a lunge position with a 90 degree bend in each knee. Place both hands next to the front foot. Circle the knee of the front leg to open up the hip and as the knee circles out to the side, allow the other hip to drop forward into its own stretch. 15 circles clockwise and anticlockwise per leg

Low Lunge with Quad Stretch Begin in a lunge position with your front leg bent to 90 degrees. Gently raise the back foot up and hold it with the opposite hand. Keeping the hips parallel and facing forwards gently squeeze your glutes to create a stretch in the hips. Continue to contract and relax the glutes and gently feel those hips open up. Avoid flaring through the ribcage and core – the hips themselves shouldn’t be rocking forwards and backwards and the lower back shouldn’t be overextended. 20-30 glute contractions per leg

Pigeon Pose with Quad Stretch This movement can be performed with or without the back leg raised. Begin on your hands and knees, gently bring one knee forward and lower it to the ground. As you do so bring that foot up as high as you can. Keeping the back leg straight push the opposite hip to the bent leg forward until you feel a stretch in the hip flexors. Not only will you feel the stretch in that hip but also in the opposite leg’s glute muscles. If you’re feeling brave and there is no discomfort in your joints or muscles, raise the back leg up off the ground and contract and relax the glutes. 20-30 contractions per leg

Equine Chiropractor
Matt Kenna is a fully qualified veterinary and sports chiropractor working with elite athletes and their horses. He is currently working providing consultancy to premiership football teams, high goal players and treats horses across all levels of polo from low goal to high goal. Based between Guards and Cowdray, he travels all over the south of England.
Don’t let musculoskeletal issues impact your performance
Gluteal muscles and hip mobility are essential for good riding and a good polo swing
As a veterinary and sports chiropractor I am really lucky to treat both players and their horses. In the eight years I have spent in human clinic, I have worked with a large variety of people, from the weekend low goal polo lover to providing consultancy to multiple high goal teams and am currently actively working in the Premier League treating footballers competing on the international stage. One thing I have learnt is, no matter how elite the patient, everyone has very similar issues, issues we cause through poor posture, poor movement habits and injuries. Of all the sports I work in, only equestrian sports cause another being to inherit our issues; as we’ve mentioned before, we translate our issues on to our horses. We work long days, travel excessive amounts and when we get home, want to chill out. What happens is we tend to sit and lean to one side, that leads to inherent stiffness and a lot of the time, pain. Then, in our free time, we ride, take polo lessons or play, conveying the issue further. Researchers have looked into this issue to try and understand more about the link between 54

horse riders and back pain. They discovered that horse riders were almost 50 per cent more likely to be in pain than to be pain free. Within the group of riders, it was over twice as likely for them to be experiencing chronic, long term pain than acute, short term pain. In terms of where the riders were likely to experience pain, 85 per cent reported neck and back pain, the majority of which was low back pain. 66 per cent reported pain in other areas of the body, with the knee the most common. Of those riders with pain, 85 per cent reported that their pain impacted their riding performance, particularly either affecting their postural asymmetry or reducing their range of motion. As polo players, we strive to improve our performance when we are on the field because when it comes down to it, polo costs us a fortune; emotionally, physically and financially. We all want to do the best we can and pain and stiffness before we even get on the field is a huge hinderance to that. Although most players aren’t elite athletes, it doesn’t mean we should be going into the weekends and chukkas underprepared,
our performance ultimately hinders our horse’s performance and with them being responsible for all of our best moments, we owe it to them and ourselves to be ready. Riders Complain Of Many Issues in Clinic: • The Neck – In particular, the SCM (sternocleidomastoid) muscle. This muscle can become tight and overused in horse riders. This causes an anterior head carriage where the head and neck is brought forward and the chin ‘juts’ out. This means riders are forced to look down rather than forwards through the horses’ ears. • The Chest – When the pectoral muscles become tight, the shoulders round forward, giving riders a hunch back appearance. • The Upper Back – In particular, the upper trapezius muscles. When these muscles become tight, the shoulders become shrugged towards the ears, causing riders’ shoulders to be uneven. This can cause uneven contact through the reins. www.polotimes.co.uk

Record Breaking Final’s Day The Paul Sweeney Memorial was founded by Lesley, Charlotte and Georgia Sweeney in memory of Paul Sweeney after his unexpected death in 2009 at just 48-years-old in order to keep his spirit and legacy alive. Not only do I view it as important for the individual to keep them on the field and enjoying their season, but it also leads to horses that present with less musculoskeletal issues, which in turn improves their performance and keeps costs down. We all put a lot in to our polo, it takes time, it takes money and a lot of dedication; preparing yourself to go on the field, as well as you preparing your horses, will help your season be longer, your performances will improve and most importantly, it will be more enjoyable. IMPROVING POLO SKILLS by Rege Ludwig
Unfortunately, there has been little written on the subjects of how to teach the game of polo and/or how to play it. My soon to be released educational program entitled, Improving Polo Skills, deals with both topics. My major focus is on the riding, the controlling and the playing of the polo horse. I discuss how you do each affects the way you execute the strategy of the game, and hit the ball. Over many years of working in polo, I have heard again and again that the polo horse is at least seventy percent of a player’s ability to play the game of polo. If that is true, as I am sure it is, then it only makes sense that if you want to improve your polo playing skills, the obvious place to start is where the largest percentage of your playing ability lies, i.e., riding, controlling, and playing the horse. In the book, Improving Polo Skills, Book One, Riding, I go into great detail explaining “WHY” the Polo Style of Riding is so important to playing the game of polo. I then go into the “HOW TO” of riding in the Polo Style. In the book, Improving Polo Skills, Book Two, Hitting, I go into an in-depth discussion on why a strong, secure and stable hitting platform is crucial to hitting any of the eight shots used in polo. Additionally, I introduce my Hitting Checklist, which is a series of steps that Half Seat must be executed in sequential order if efficient hitting of any of the eight shots used in polo is to be realized. I refer to that sequential order as, The Law of Sequence. I also go into how the ending of one shot feeds into the beginning of the shot used for hitting in the opposite direction on the same Begin Offside Fore Shot to End Offside Fore Shot/Begin Offside Backshot side. In the book, Improving Polo Skills, Book Three, Strategy, I discuss what the line of the ball and the right of way are. I reference each in a manner that defines how each should be used if maximum safety and effectiveness of play are to be realized. I also discuss, from an offense and a defense perspective, what the responsibilities are for each of the four positions in the outdoor game and the three positions of the indoor game. I also break the width of the field down into three sections that extend the length of the field. The middle section is an 80-yard-wide area where the offensive #1 and defensive #4, while staying on a direct line between the ball and the goal, should play the majority of the game. The two 50-yard-wide sections, on either side of the field, are areas where the #2s and #3s should play a large portion of the game. For more information go to RegePolo.com

Durham University Polo Club Charity Winter Ball; Lumley Castle; Saturday 19 February
DUPC Ball Returns in Style Just over 200 attendees gathered at Lumley Castle for one of Durham’s most acclaimed and prestigious events. After months in the planning, guests celebrated the first Durham University Polo Ball held in the county for almost two years, by indulging in fizz paired with a luxury three course meal. Highlights of the evening included a welcome photoshoot with two polo ponies, which had travelled all the way from Lincolnshire for the occasion, a charity auction in aid of the MS Society, who received a donation of just under £3,000, and an unforgettable bespoke equine ice sculpture. An absolutely tremendous event concluded with guests dancing the night away to an array of wonderful performers, including a string quartet, jazz band and DJ. Genevieve Pringle & Efetobore Awaritefe

Jason Crowder has played all over the globe including, France, England, Mexico, Argentina, Australia and of course his home turn of the USA. 2022 saw Crowder add Switzerland to this list, making his Snow Polo World Cup St. Moritz debut with Team Badrutt’s Palace. Top wins to date include The Ylvisaker Cup in 2012 with Melissa Ganzi’s Piaget as well as several wins in The Pacific Coast Open What is your biggest passion and why? My biggest passion is obviously the horses. Without them we cannot do any of this. I love the heart and effort they give at all times. What is your all time best polo memory? My all time best memory in polo is probably winning The Pacific Coast Open for the first time. My father had accomplished so much before me that the only thing left on the West Coast without my family name on it was The Pacific Coast Open. He had made the Finals five or six times without winning it, so getting that one for the man who gave me so much definitely tops my list.
Which sports do you like outside of polo? I’m a very big fan of F1 and also hockey, but I will pretty much play any sport at any time. I love the competition.
Favourite hobby outside of polo? Paddle boarding, or running up mountains – I’d call it hiking but I’ve been told what I do is not really hiking… and spear fishing.
Favourite film? It is a toss-up between Shawshank Redemption and Rudy.
Most prized possession? My photo album of the greatest horses I’ve played over the years. Favourite celebrity and why? Whitney Crowder! My sister the actress of course! (But if she is voided out I’ll go with my man Sterling Jones!) Best holiday destination & activity? My best holiday destination is an easy one. My love for Costa Careyes can never be overstated. From the minute I arrive I live in the water, the only thing I come out for are the polo games. Paddle boarding, snorkelling or just swimming all day – that’s my perfect place.
Favourite song/album? Californication by Red Hot Chili Peppers
inska Photograph by David Lom

Polo Times, April 2022
Favourite food/dish? Brussels sprouts.
Best pony and why? This is a tough one. I guess I have to give it to a horse I played when I was younger. His name was Tip-Top. He was a legend in Indio where I grew up. Played at every level from 8 goal all the way through the 22s. He was never lame a day in his life and retired back to the farm where he was born in Washington at 21-years-old. Are you passionately superstitious? I think almost everyone in polo is at least a little superstitious and I am no exception. From putting my boots on my right foot first, to the meal I eat the night before games I definitely have a few! I may have a lot of problems… Describe yourself in three words… Happy, determined, unafraid.
