U.S. Junior Open Test Match

Joaquin Avendaño chases down Santino Magrini

On Friday 14 January, International Polo Club Palm Beach (IPC) in Wellington, Florida hosted the first ever U.S. Junior Open Test Match, sponsored by U.S. Polo Assn. The tournament is open to players 21-years-old and younger and is the first open tournament for young players in the US, Hope Arellano who was part of the winning Port Mayaca line-up commented, “Overall, it was an incredible tournament and a great idea. I don’t think it could have gone better for the first year. I would love to see it played again next year.”

The inaugural match got off to a slow start, with not many goals scored, missed opportunities and fouls hanging over the young teams and the first half ended 3-1 to Port Mayaca. The third chukka saw Port Mayaca begin to click and they gained momentum in the fourth chukka, which saw Santino Magrini pick up the pace for his team; Hilario Figueras kept his team in the game with his second goal of the match in the fifth chukka, however Magrinin quickly replied to maintain Port Mayaca’s lead and they went into the final chukka leading 6-2. Figueras tried to bring Dutta Corp/Show+ back into contention with two more goals, but the Magrini brothers had other ideas and scored to end the match with an 8-4 win for Port Mayaca. Santino Magrini was awarded the Most Valuable Player prize and Don

Ercole Maria, played by Keko Magrini, was named the Best Playing Pony.
