Evident botanicals make for a well rounded gin with fabulous complexity. The balance marks it out for universal purpose… it simply tastes great

Spicy and smooth, this organic gin has strong cardamon notes. Makes a great gin and tonic

Forget bland aromas on opening. This gin has a different twist and lends itself to botanical flavours. Add mint, basil or a strawberry to the drink – a first for this occasional gin drinker – and a winning formula is created. TELEGRAPH VERDICT

Suicide is the leading cause of death in men under 50 in the UK. Our mission at James’ Place is to stop men dying by suicide. James' Place was founded by Clare Milford Haven and Nick Wentworth-Stanley following the tragic loss of their son, James Wentworth-Stanley, aged 21. James’ Place is a place where men in suicidal crisis can access support, advice and help. Our centres in Liverpool and London provide a safe, therapeutic environment in which men are cared for, respected, and treated by professional therapists. Since we started delivering our intervention in August 2018, we have seen over 1,100 men in crisis. We now need to expand our service to provide our life-saving, unique intervention nationally, treating 2000 men per year, by opening three further centres in England.

2022 Coronation Cup

With the Summer Solstice and the longest day just behind us, the slow march towards the depths of winter has begun, but for now, the focus is still firmly on the ongoing polo season, which in the UK is in full swing. From high goal to Schools, there is masses of polo being played at all levels and our July issue of Polo Times reflects this with reports from: The Cartier Queen’s Cup; The Gloucestershire Festival of Polo; The Out-Sourcing Inc. Royal Windsor Cup; The Cotswold Airport Warwickshire Cup and the current results of the 2022 Victor Ludorum series of qualifying tournaments. However, where would all the high and medium goal polo be, without grass roots polo? To help answer that, I hope you will enjoy the report on The SUPA Universities Summer National Championship which was another record-breaking three day event and had a staggering 174 teams taking part. Also saluting low goal polo, White Rose Polo Club’s Hedley Aylott interview with John Nash – a polo playing legend who still plays competitive polo at the grand age of 82-years-old – provides insightful tips and rib-cracking stories from his 50 seasons of polo. These really were the glory days when polo teams would travel from club to club hosted by the local teams for a weekend of polo and parties. In our Knowledge section, one of the most popular parts of every issue, Lorna Edgar focuses on Guy Schwarzenbach’s yard, a timely spotlight considering Black Bear’s recent win in The Cotswold Airport Warwickshire Cup, while the Polodoc looks at the importance of rapid injury assessment and esteemed polo coach Rege Ludwig assesses the Three Critical Moves of The Shoulder. This month’s Passions is with 18-year-old Cruz Heguy, fresh from his win with Great Oaks Les Lions in The Cartier Queen’s Cup. Whilst all this fun continues, I urge you to please do spare a thought and prayer by remembering the valiant nation of Ukraine who continue to defy the odds, against an unjust bloody war which continues to inflict untold and unnecessary suffering on mainland Europe’s borders.

Farriers Registration Council The Farriers Registration Council (FRC) is a statutory regulator exercising a number of statutory powers at the direction of Parliament, including at s14 of Farriers Registration Act (FRA) “… for the consideration and determination of disciplinary cases …”. The Council delivers this function through its statutory committees, the Investigating Committee (IC) and the Disciplinary Committee (DC), both of which are operated independently of the Council, and independently of each other. The standard of proof is the level to which the regulator must prove factual allegations against a registrant, and the standard of proof used in the disciplinary process is a matter of policy choice for the Council. In recent years there has been a marked shift by regulators, such that in England and Wales only the RCVS and the FRC use the criminal standard of proof “so as to be sure” (synonymous with “beyond reasonable doubt”), whereas all other regulators use the civil standard “more likely than not” (or “on the balance of probabilities”). The position adopted by the Council may be described as at variance with other regulatory bodies exercising similar powers. The rationale for application of the civil standard is that the fundamental purpose of professional regulation and discipline is protection of the public, and not punishment of an individual who commits misconduct. Although the consequence of regulatory proceedings may be severe they do not include potential for loss of liberty. Professional regulatory proceedings are not part of the criminal jurisdiction but part of the civil jurisdiction and, as such, the proper standard of proof to apply in such proceedings is the civil standard. This rationale is underscored by recent case law. The Council has decided that it should conduct a consultation on the matter with the profession and the public. The Council is keen to receive the views of the public, and in particular the owners of equines. The consultation paper setting out the issues may be read on the FRC website (www.farrier-reg.gov.uk). The consultation is open for comments between 24 June 2022 and 5 August 2022.

Ready, Set, Joust!

An unexpected sight at this year’s Out-Sourcing Inc. Royal Windsor Cup Final was the Club’s inaugural, lunchtime jousting tournament. The Knights of Royal England put on an impressive display of medieval warfare, from jousting to hand-to-hand combat, there were thrills and spills aplenty for the enraptured crowds. The horses were impeccably trained, with the riding and training styles very similar to those used 7,000 years ago. w Photograph by @www.imagesofpolo.com

John Nash Interview

Hedley Aylott speaks to John Nash, a polo legend from Yorkshire with over 50 polo seasons under his belt and who is still playing at 82-years-old

W

hen you meet John Nash, there is no doubting you are in the company of someone special. He has the glint in his eye of a naughty boy and man who knows that life is for living and he’s certainly done much of that on and off the polo field in the last 82 years. This is John’s story and if you have the pleasure of meeting him one day, get him to tell you in person. Today, John is a playing Member and President of White Rose Polo Club in Yorkshire since it was founded in 2007. He plays off a -1 handicap and you will find him competing for silverware at every opportunity, travelling in his red lorry to play at clubs around the north of England. John ‘Nashie’ (as he is known) describes polo as a cross between horse riding, a ball game and car rally driving all rolled into one – all of which he enjoyed. His enthusiasm for

John Nash Interview the game is legendary as is his encouragement of newcomers to the sport. He has played polo around the world including, Kenya, Ireland, New Zealand, Argentina, snow polo at Cortina and Klosters, and even Elephant polo in Nepal courtesy of James Manclark.

John’s Start In Polo

John learned to play polo in Kenya having been approached by the local club looking for new recruits who could ride as they were short of players. He started on his ranch (farm) horses, which were ridden 22 miles to the ground on the Friday before playing over the weekend and then returning home on the Monday. He was also assisted by an elderly high goal pony and was told to, ‘allow the horse to take him to the right spot, and when there try to hit the ball.’ And so it all began.

Return to England

John returned to England, and in 1974 came across Toulston Polo Club by complete chance having seen the sign from the road. With only seven members at the club, John was encouraged to join by Jim Haigh and he set about buying a pony that he eventually found in the Pennines. He hunted Ali his new thoroughbred in the winter and played polo in the summer at Toulston. The 70’s to 90’s was a wonderful time to be playing polo. John’s motto became, ‘have horses, will travel’. There were trips to Scotland at least twice a year and the tournament at Tidworth was unmissable. As John recounts, “You didn’t

go to the clubhouse because the General was present and they started the ball with a tank round. I only had 2 ponies but still played in the 0 goal and 4 goal in the same day.” There were regular tournaments across the country – Rutland, Silver Leys, Cheshire, Tidworth, Edinburgh and Perth, Ayton, Coldstream, Kirtlington, Ham, Taunton and latterly for the Masters at both Guards and Dallas Burston Senior players. “Polo was so much more social then and we almost always stayed with club members, who offered the most wonderful hospitality which was repaid when they came to visit us at Toulston. Until recently we didn’t have to pay a hotel or B&B bill” says John. Through his travelling, John built long lasting friendships with many of the visionary polo families in England including Hugh Dawnay, John Tinsley, the Humphreys, Emersons and Seavills at Rutland. “The Seavill boys were in nappies when I first met them, and the Emerson children were in pushchairs,” explains John. John’s deep friendships in Scotland with The Earl of Morton, his son Jamie Douglas and James Manclark were cherished.

Polo grows in Yorkshire

In 2002 John seized the opportunity to introduce Andrew Foreman to polo during a chance visit to Toulston Polo Club, spontaneously offering Andrew his horse and mallet with the words “why don’t you have a go?” The horse took off, Andrew swung the mallet and the ball travelled 50 yards. “It was like catching a fish,” laughs John. Next season Beverly Polo Club was formed and within two years Yorkshire had another 30 players. In 2006 John was introduced to me, I had also got the polo ‘bug’ following a birthday polo experience from my parents. I asked John to support me in setting up White Rose Polo Club and he became the Club’s President from 2007 when the Club launched. 15 years on, John continues to encourage

John Nash Interview ‘Going hard’ in the Veterans at Guards 2004

John on Polo Q: Best polo moment? A: Unseating General Denaro from his horse playing at Dallas Burston in The Masters. He came in to ride me off rather hard, but came out much the loser to his surprise! Q: Best polo trophy? A: Playing in The Masters tournaments with James Manclark, John Tinsley and John Earl of Morton, runner-up in The Assam Cup at Rutland and playing in The Toulston Silver Jubilee Cup and Members Trophy. Q: Secrets to a long polo career? A: Luck (avoid injuries), have fun, the social aspect is as important as the polo, say ‘Hello’ and be friendly to everyone.

and inspire polo players from around Yorkshire with his sound advice whether it be how to fix a broken lorry, grow haylage or choose a new pony. I’ve had the privilege to travel widely with polo and whenever I say I’m from Yorkshire people’s faces light up and they say, “Do you know John Nash?”. Proudly I reply, “Well actually I do”. John’s

friendliness, positive attitude, concern for others and ability to get into trouble both on and off the polo field have to make him the most unforgettable character, much loved and admired by those who know him. That he is still playing competitive polo at the age of 82 is quite extraordinary but no surprise if you’ve met the legend that is John Nash. As John puts it, “If you don’t use it, you lose it”.

Q: How to become a decent player? A: Continue to take lessons. Know the rules. Know the basic tactics and where to be on the pitch. Always head for the left hand goal post when hitting to goal. Learn to ride for polo not hunting (or other discipline). Get ‘outside’ your pony when hitting and riding, as Hugh Dawnay would say! Play hard and be considerate. Playing chukkas are so important for all the players and the Club. Good players need willing grooms with enthusiasm. Q: What do you keep in your lorry? A: Udder balm for cows (great for aching joints) – available from your local vet and a beer for afterwards. Q: Biggest mishaps? A: Lost a finger tying up a horse, I should have put it in some ice, but zipped the finger in my pocket and forgot about it until I got to hospital! Losing my farrier kit, including anvil and 500 nails, on the motorway travelling back from Edinburgh in the polo lorry. Regaining consciousness after a fall and finding a man with his hand in my mouth looking for his tongue. Q: How has polo changed in last 50 years? A: Players didn’t turn the ball right or left – they all hit back hands. The ‘etiquette’ of polo has changed for the worse – red and yellow cards were not required. Polo was much more social in the 70s to 90s. Polo ponies were generally not made here in the UK.

Michael Berkeley ARPS is Club photographer for Druids Lodge Polo Club and can also be spotted roaming the southern counties photographing all levels of Club polo. With years of knowledge and a family passion for photography passed down the generations, Michael offers Polo Times readers his top ten tips for taking a successful polo photograph

Polo is fast, furious, and full of exciting action to photograph. But what’s the secret of taking a ‘killer image’ that captures the essence of the sport? Here are my top ten tips for taking a successful polo photograph:

1

FACES

It’s really important that players are instantly recognisable and that means that you should be able to see their face in the photo. To achieve this, the best place to position yourself is one side of the goal looking straight down the pitch because the players will normally be coming directly towards you. You need to sit to one side of the goal so that the posts don’t get in the way and, obviously, at a safe distance!

2

You might think the best time to take a photo is when the player is hitting the ball, but they will be looking down and it is likely that you will just get a photo of the top of their hat. It’s therefore better to take the shot when the player is shaping up to hit the ball or just afterwards when they look up to see where the ball is going to land.

3

WEATHER

For a very similar reason, it’s best to avoid very hot and sunny days if possible. As polo is often played in the middle of the day when the summer sun is very high in the sky, the bright light will cast a dark shadow obscuring the player’s face. Ideal conditions are therefore a bright but overcast day.

4

BACKGROUNDS

You should avoid any unwanted distractions, such as horse boxes or advertisements, and it’s therefore important to position yourself so that the background is as uncluttered and ‘clear’ as possible. This will vary from location to location, but it’s ideal if you can have trees as the backdrop to your photographs.

5

SETTINGS

The technical bit! The other way to manage this issue is to blur the background by using as wide an aperture as your lens will allow, giving you a shallow depth of field and separating the action from the background. I also use a fast shutter speed – of at least 1/1000th second – in order to freeze the action.

6

EQUIPMENT

People often say that equipment is less important than the skill of the photographer and, while very true, sport photography is immeasurably easier if you have good equipment. This means that you need a camera and lens that are very quick to focus and will track the action effectively. I use a 200-600mm telephoto lens in order to photograph the action at the far end of the pitch, but also have the ability to zoom out quickly as the players come down to my end.

7

DRAMA

It’s very easy to take a photograph that is static and flat, but a good image should have drama. So, you want photos of action, such as players competing for the ball or in a ride-off, or a number of players coming directly towards you down the ground. Dirt being kicked up and horses with all their hooves off the ground will add to the drama by implying movement and speed.

8

THE BALL

Although this is not essential, it is a good idea to get the ball in the photo and in a position that makes it stand out. This is all part of the story that the photo is telling.

9

PERSPECTIVE

My ‘secret’ tip – one that isn’t so obvious – is to get as low as possible when taking your photographs. I always sit, sometimes on a small camping stool and sometimes even on the ground. This makes a surprising difference, as it makes you look slightly up at the players and it then feels as though you are part of the action.

TAKE LOTS OF SHOTS!

My father, Bryan Berkeley, was the Club photographer for Cirencester Park for many years and he operated in the era of film. I use a mirrorless camera, which can take 20 frames a second, making it much easier to capture the precise moment you want, and I will think nothing of taking over a thousand photos at the polo – it doesn’t cost anything except the time in reviewing them afterwards. My father had to wait for a couple of days for the film to come back from processing to see whether he had any photos in focus. Love and respect.

There is nothing to beat getting out there and giving it a go…

Cartier Queen’s Cup

he Cartier Queen’s Cup is one of the most prestigious of all the high goal tournaments, so with the eyes of the entire polo world focusing on Guards Polo Club, the best teams mounted on the pinnacle of pony power gathered to do battle for this coveted prize. Four weeks of world-class competition saw it all boil down to the Final played in front of packed grandstands and the iconic Royal Box on the Queen’s Ground between Great Oaks Les Lions and Park Place Vaara. As always, it was all to play for – but this year Park Place Vaara were on a mission and in search of their organisation’s first title after being frustrated by reaching the Final in three of the last four seasons. No less determined were Great Oaks Les Lions who were looking to reclaim the title they won in 2020. Quick off the mark Park Place Vaara got off to a strong start, with 10 goal powerhouse and horseman supremo Hilario Ulloa launching the ball from 60 yards out and finding the posts just seconds into the game. This dominance continued with Park Place having a strong first chukka holding a three goal advantage in the dying seconds of the opening chukka. However, with time ticking down, Cruz Heguy completed a breakaway run to keep Great Oaks LL within reach, trailing 3-1. That field goal would prove to be Great Oaks LL’s only one of the first half as both defences provided few opportunities in a tightly marked match. Park Place Vaara continued to have the upper hand on scores for the majority of the match, with the combination of Hilario Ulloa and Juan Britos proving formidable. The duo had spent the long days of the English winter honing their skills in the sunnier climes of Florida in the USPA’s Gauntlet of Polo Series. So, at half time it was close, but not too close at 5-3, in Park Place Vaara’s advantage. A half-time chat meant a change of strategy and tactics saw both teams failing to find the goal in the fourth and fifth chukkas – attack met with superb defence and any mistakes or advantages cancelled out by incredible horsepower and marking. The result was that going into the sixth chukka the score was unchanged at 5-3. Breaking the deadlock, Britos stole the ball from a knock-in, fought his way to goal and was fouled just steps from the post, but converted a Penalty 2 to put Park Place Vaara ahead by three and bring the Cartier Queen’s Cup title tantalisingly within their reach. It seemed that Park Place Vaara had it in the bag. However, as those who have watched enough polo know, it is not over until it is over and as the time ticked down to inside the final four minutes, the Great Oaks Les Lions genie truly came out of the bottle. Juan Martin Nero scored from distance for, incredibly, the first Great Oaks LL field goal since the opening chukka.

Scoring his second goal shortly after, Nero brought his team within one with just over one minute remaining, in what was now a thrilling conclusion. Working the ball down the right side, Nero hit a neck shot across goal and with a quick turn of his horse, Heguy gained possession and found the goal to send the match into overtime in what can only be described as an incredible turn of events. Stunned by the late comeback from Great Oaks Les Lions, Park Place Vaara found the first opportunity in overtime,

receiving a Penalty 4 to win the game and the title. However, this ball was hit short, ensuring this nail-biting match continued. Hitting a long ball from midfield, Nero sent James Beim racing towards goal under

pressure from Britos. Winning the ride-off, Beim picked up the ball on the nearside and ran it through the goal, ensuring Great Oaks would win this epic final 9-8. So – despite all signs during the first five chukkas of this epic match, the polo gods had intervened and Great Oaks Les Lions secured their second Queen’s Cup title in two years, building upon their 2020 success. In time-honoured fashion, Laurent Feniou, Managing Director of Cartier UK, sponsors of this iconic 22-goal tournament since 2012, presented the trophy to Dillon Bacon. Sadly, HM The Queen was not in attendance – hopefully we will see her in the Royal Box again next year.

England triumphed over Ireland in the feature Test Match

www.polotimes.co.uk

fter a two year delay due to the pandemic, Beaufort Polo Club opened its doors once again for The Gloucestershire Festival of Polo, for a two day polo extravaganza plus a cornucopia of displays, events and tradestands. Kicking off the action on the first day, Saturday 11 June, was The Hurlingham 1875 International Test Match which pitted old rival, England vs Ireland, which saw four chukkas of 16 goal action entertain the crowds. Ultimately England prevailed and secured a 7-5 win, with Richard Tyrone’s Monkey Business winning Best Playing Pony and Tom Brodie’s Brindle taking home the RoR Best Playing Pony award. Saturday’s action also included The Eduardo Rojas Lanusse 6 goal Victor Ludorum Final, please turn to our Victor Ludorum Report for the result. Sunday’s games were all about the next generation with two youth matches. The first match was The HPA Colts U19 between Hurlingham and 1875 and saw a closely contested battle between the two teams over four chukkas, but in the end Hurlingham secured a narrow, 5-4, win. The second match was The Javier Novillo Astrada U15, a traditional fixture at The Gloucestershire Festival of Polo and over the course of three chukkas RJ Polo took on Black Hound, with RJ Polo securing the win. ourteen teams, with each team representing a different Polo Club, took part in the second edition of The Polo Rider Cup at Polo Club du Domaine de Chantilly, in six chukka matches. After an intense 10 days of competition, the finalists were decided as Ellerstina Polo Club and Evviva Polo St. Moritz, with both teams having enjoyed undefeated journeys to the Final, but not having faced each other yet in the competition. Ellerstina Polo Club opened the scoring in the first chukka with a field goal in the first few seconds from Salvador Jauretche, which was swiftly neutralised with a penalty conversion by Evviva Polo St. Moritz’s Martin Aguerre but just before the chukka bell, Juan Pedro Chavanne claimed another goal for Ellerstina Polo Club with a neckshot to end the chukka 2-1. Ellerstina’s momentum continued into the second chukka, which saw them outscore Evviva Polo St. Moritz by four goals to none in reply. The third chukka saw one goal for the boys in white, but Ellerstina Polo Club outstripped them again and the half-time scoreboard read 8-2. Evviva Polo St. Moritz’s luck didn’t improve when Tommy Rinderknecht had to be replaced, with Lucie Venot taking to the field. However, they made a phenomenal fifth chukka comeback, gripping the onlooking spectators as they closed the gap to 9-5 going into the last chukka. Both teams traded goals in the sixth chukka, but it was too little too late and Ellerstina Polo Club’s early advantage prevailed and they took the win, 9-7, to lift the 2022 Polo Rider Cup.

ardon have added their name to the impressive The Out-Sourcing Inc. Royal Windsor Cup with a golden goal from Isidro Strada, but not without a fight, having narrowly defeated Andrew Dechet’s Ainsley Saddlery 11-10 in an extra-time cliff-hanger. The win for Andras Tombor and his Bardon squad avenged his gutting half goal loss in last year’s Final at the hands of Emlor, although they once again had a fight on their hands as Ainsley Saddlery would not give an inch. Even when Bardon forged ahead with a two-goal lead in the third and again in the fifth chukkas their attempts to hold their lead were thwarted by their tenacious opponents. Unfortunately, however, Ainsley Saddlery did not have luck on their side as they had been forced to make two changes to their team line-up after Dechet himself was injured in the Quarter Finals; being replaced Knowledge in the Final by the very capable Jack Caesar Whitman, while the impressive 12-year-old Rufino Laulhe took on Number One duties from his brother Beltran in the Ainsley squad and is definitely a player to keep an eye on in the future. s Polo Times Pony Power

This Argentine player, also playing in his first Final at the Guards Polo Club, was impressive, including winning several horse races against the always strong Manuel Plaza of Ainsley Saddlery. In the fifth, and supposedly final chukka at this 15 goal level, both Plaza and Guillermo Terrera really stepped up a gear, pushing this game level and all to play for at 10-10.

Sensing victory a penalty for Ainsley Saddlery at the very end of this match to win the game, uncharacteristically went wide for Plaza, highlighting the pressure and tension on the field and pushing this game into extra time. A great run by Lacau went wide early into this extra time and the many guests of Out-Sourcing Inc., sponsors of this tournament for the past five years, held their breath. More tense play occurred before a Strada backhand delivered the win for Bardon. A hugely delighted Andras Tombor

received the prestigious trophy from David Matsumoto, Executive Advisor to Out-Sourcing Inc and Anne Heraty, Founder and Chairman of Cpl Resources Group and a Director of Out-Sourcing Inc. Strada was named Most Valuable Player and Matias Machado’s mare Open Calloway, was chosen as the Best Playing Pony; Open Calloway is no stranger to the BPP presentation, she also received the Polo Times Best Playing Pony rug in 2021 in The Indian Empire Shield Final. social images from The Out-Sourcing Inc. T

he Warwickshire Cup has a long and varied history in English polo – it was first presented in 1894 to Warwickshire Polo Club by the people of Leamington; Warwickshire Polo Club was founded in 1884 by J Shaw, A Jones and Maj Green but was dissolved in 1914. The Warwickshire Cup was then dormant from 1914 to 1932, when the Cup was presented to the Roehampton Club where it was known as The Hargreaves Cup and was used in matches played between Roehampton and Hurlingham or a visiting Club from overseas; in 1959 competition was resumed and it currently is played for at Cirencester Park Polo Club. 2022 saw a new chapter for this historic tournament with a new sponsor, Cotswold Airport; Cotswold Airport CEO, Suzannah Harvey, has been a long-standing supporter of Cirencester Park Polo Club. As is so often the way in the UK, but nonetheless disappointing, a glorious week of weather gave way to a drenching on Saturday 18 June, but the supporters on the sidelines braved the weather in their ‘picnic bubbles’ as Black Bears faced Thai Polo NP in The Cotswold Airport Warwickshire Cup Final. With four teams entered in this year’s tournament, the competition opened at the Semi Final stage, which saw Black Bears secure

Four Quarters Orange, winners of The Duke of Sutherland Final.

Both teams had already met earlier in the tournament, which saw Four Quarters Orange defeat Altimira K; would Four Quarters Orange be able to maintain their undefeated streak, or would Altimira K upset the apple cart in the Final? The first half was incredibly tight, with both sides trading goals, although by halftime, Four Quarters Orange just managed to get the upper hand thanks to a field goal from Gonzalo Ferrari to break the stalemate and give them a 4-3 lead going into half-time. Four Quarters Orange flew into the second half, building upon their advantage, while Altimira K struggled to find the goal posts. Finally, Gaston Laulhe broke the www.polotimes.co.uk

Action continued apace at Beaufort with The Justerini & Brooks Arthur Lucas Cup, the well-supported tournament saw teams between 12 and 15 goals compete. However, it all boiled down to the Final which saw husband pitted against wife as Simon Arber took on Romilla Arber. In a close match, it was Romilla who won the day, with a tight 8-7 victory being just enough to see her lift the silverware. As Confido took a knock-in from their own end, going the length of the field with Creighton Boyd hitting a huge shot from outside 60 yards to tie the game at 2-2 at the end of the first half. Both teams traded goals in the second half, which saw Bel Polo’s Tommy Severn add his second 30 yard penalty conversion, but Matias Mac Donough Jnr scored an impressive nearside neck-shot goal to give Confido their first lead of the Final, 4-3. The fourth chukka saw Confido extend their lead to two goals, but foul trouble allowed Bel Polo to creep back into contention and another 30 yard penalty conversion for Severn with just one minute www.polotimes.co.uk

Action from The Petworth Cup Final

Valhalla/Madams Farm, winners of The Bryan Bethell Cup

The 15 goal Bryan Bethell Cup was played on Saturday 11 June between two undefeated teams, Valhalla/Madams Farm and Jolly Roger King of Polo and was a back-andforth display of medium goal polo for the supporters on such a sun-filled day. The duo of Jack Richardson and Lucas Monteverde Jr. drove the Valhalla/Madams Farm attack and they ran out the winners, 11-8 with Zeta, played by Lukin Monteverde Jnr. the Best Playing Pony. Also played that day was The Jersey Lilies Cup which saw Emma MacRae’s Ice Craft defeat against Peter O’Rourke’s Strategic Shipping in a very close Final. The following day, Sunday 12 June, saw the Final of The Petworth Cup between Cotton House and Bamboleo/Madams Farm. Both teams had faced each other just five days earlier, with Cotton House taking a narrow two goal victory, would this be a repeat performance? From the outset it was closely fought, with each team trying to gain the upperhand, but in the end it was Cotton House’s John Martin who scored the winning goal, 6-5, to take the team’s second victory against Bamboleo/Madams Farm and with it the title.

White Waltham Polo Club

The Club celebrated the Platinum Jubilee with plenty of polo and sidelines activities

Over the weekend 28 – 29 May, the Club hosted The Recoleta Polo Tournament and Trophy. The teams who won their matches on Saturday, moving into the final on Sunday were Bilal Shaykh’s Cedar Polo Team and HK Yellow Polo Team. Cedar held onto their lead in the Final all the way to the last hooter, with great team work between the winning team of Bilal Shaykh, Georgina Brittain, Nicola BonitoOlivia and Sam Lomri. The Club had a wonderful bunting filled Jubilee weekend at White Waltham Polo Club, starting with a Jubilee match on Thursday morning followed by the annual Aiglon vs

Gordonstoun commentated polo match, won by the Gordonstoun team with a Jubilee asado and over 60 people enjoying the feast after the matches on Thursday. After chukkas on Friday, everyone enjoyed delicious Jubilee cupcakes. On Saturday and Sunday, teams celebrated in their usual way competing for The Coronation Cup and celebrating the Platinum year for HM The Queen and all the service HM has given this country. The Final of The Coronation Cup was played at White Waltham Polo Club between HK Polo Yellow vs Abercairney. At the beginning of the third chukka, HK Polo

Yellow were in the lead by three goals when Abercairney fought back in the last chukka, unfortunately unable to catch them leaving a final score of 6-5 to HK Polo Yellow. Abercairney went on to win again on Saturday 11 June to qualify for the Final of George’s Memorial polo tournament on Sunday 12 June against Grand Cru (Nicola BonitoOliva, Claire Graham, Scarlett McCoy & Alex Hayman-Joyce) who kept a lead all the way through the final to win 6½-8 at the final hooter. Over the weekend 18 – 19 June, the Club played for the biggest trophy in their cabinet at White Waltham Polo Club, the huge Summer Cup! After the two matches on Saturday 18 June, Cedar Polo Team and Carlitos Polo moved on to play in the Subsidiary Final on Sunday morning, with Alex’s Grand Cru Polo Team and Sarah’s Mountgerald Polo Team wins on Saturday, qualifying them to play in the Final of The Summer Cup on Sunday. An exciting Final saw Grand Cru taking an early lead, but Mountgerald fought back with a last-second penalty, but it was not enough to win the match, so with a one goal difference, Grand Cru took the trophy. The Club have places available to play on Canada Day (2 – 3 July), Club ponies are available to hire on these days if required, with the beautiful Canadian Bear Trophy and many more fabulous prizes generously donated and sponsored by Howard Flood and Moosehead Lager.

ML Bar Ranch/No Le Hace began with a two goal handicap advantage, which Bryan Middleton swiftly increased to a three goal lead within the first minute of the match; however, BTA/Horsegate’s power duo Shane Rice and Lance Stefanakis started to get the wheels turning with a goal apiece to end the first chukka trailing by just one goal. By the end of the first half, BTA/Horsegate had successfully reversed the lead, to be ahead 8-5. The last three chukkas of action saw plenty of action from both sides, thrilling the crowds, although ML Bar Ranch/ No Le Hace refused to give in, the team play between BTA/Horsegate was too much to overcome and they ran out the winners, 13-10. 13 teams gathered at Tedworth Park Polo Club (TPPC) on Thursday 2 June for the Royal Artillery Jubilee Tournament and as you can see they provided a great atmosphere. A crowd of 350 spectators enjoyed some great low goal polo and the hospitality of the Royal Artillery tent on a very special day. Great work was done by Jess Andrews and her team at TPPC to gather the hirelings and match with the players, especially as many providers are still building strings post-Covid. Four Divisions did battle with the matches on the Tattoo Ground and the great backdrop of the Park. There was some real potential talent on display and the results were as follows:

Polo Times, July 2022

ight members of the Household Cavalry Polo Team embarked on the 8,000 mile journey to Jurassic Park Polo Club in Swartberg, South Africa. With expert instruction and coaching from Selby Williamson and his Club pros, the team were treated to a seven day intensive training week. The team set off from London Heathrow, travelling to Durban via Nairobi and Johannesburg. Greeted at Durban Airport by two drivers, they then continued by road for the final leg of the journey to reach Jurassic Park Polo Club. Arriving in the dark, deep in the countryside of South Africa the team did not realise the spectacular views they would wake up to, breathtakingly beautiful scenery with fields full of polo ponies, a few zebras, and an ostrich! Training began with some first-class instruction from Cody and Rod on the wooden horses under the blazing African sun. With the remainder of the team fielding with foot mallets, each team member was guided through the perfect swing and hitting the balls from the wooden horses with ease in no time. Even those on the trip who were completely new to polo were quick to pick up the technique, especially Captain Angus ‘Goose’ Wood who was often described as a hustler due to his natural ability with www.polotimes.co.uk

A Round-Up of Military Polo Action the mallet! Training continued with stick and balling several ponies each to decide which you’d like to work with for the duration of the trip. Each day started with training on the wooden horse, working to perfect the swing before stick and ball practice, and finally chukkas where the team put the training to the test. With some healthy competition growing within the ranks, it wasn’t long before we were all galloping from end-to-end with confidence building and skill level rising, doing their best to get the ball in the goal and beat their opponents (even in ‘friendly’ Club chukkas!). Day four saw the team hack out with the grooms and around 50 ponies to Swartberg Polo Club to play chukkas. Over hills and through streams, riding alongside cattle being herded and through the wild flowers, the team made their way to Swartberg. The sun was scorching, but with Selby’s team on hand with refreshments under the gazebo all played well and thoroughly enjoyed the challenge of the heat. The speed of the chukkas was really starting to increase now, with Trooper Conor Beukes flying around the pitch chasing down the opposition for the ride off. With goals scored by Beukes, Captain George Lane Fox and Corporal of Horse Anthony Kitchen an exciting five chukkas came to an end. The team were

then treated to a display of very fast club chukkas involving Selby, Cody, and Rod before heading back to the farm for a wellearned barbecue. After the success of the chukkas at Swartberg, Selby decided to put his four best grooms against four of the team. Lane Fox, Kitchen, Beukes and Corporal of Horse Richard Raffel were the chosen four to go up against the team of very good grooms, one of which held a 2 goal handicap. There was plenty of end-toend action with the team proving to be worthy opponents for the grooms. With

Military

some great goals scored by both teams, especially one scored by the grooms from almost the halfway line, a very tough match ended with the Household Cavalry losing 5-4 with Beukes narrowly missing an equaliser at the last second, hitting the post which sent the ball wide! A successful trip all round, the Household Cavalry Polo Team improved immensely during their time in South Africa under the instruction of Selby and his team. With hospitality as good as the instruction everyone thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity and experience.

England faced Argentina for The Ladies International for The Diamond Jubilee Trophy, which saw some of the best female players from both countries go head-to-head in the 30 goal match. Argentina received a half goal handicap advantage, but this was not enough to secure the win, which ultimately came down to just half a goal, with England taking a 6-5½ victory. Missy, played by Nina Clarkin was the Best Playing Pony and Far Song, played by Hazel Jackson, was the RoR Best Playing Pony. Hazel Jackson commented on the win, “It was a tough game and it felt like we didn’t get a second to breathe. It was a shame about the weather, however the team worked well and we definitely did not give up, hence the outcome. I would love to see the match replayed between us soon and potentially increased to five chukkas rather than four. It is a blessing to play ladies polo 54

at its highest standard and so much more so to represent your own country. Kayley worked so hard on the field, along with Nina’s dominant presence and accurate penalties, finished with an incredible goal by Milly – I couldn’t wish for better team mates.” Milly Hine, who has had a strong run of wins lately, including at Chestertons Polo in the Park Test Match, commented on her second England Ladies win this month, “It was an absolute honour to be part of The Diamond Jubilee Trophy this year, especially considering that it is the

Oxford Secure La Martina Varsity Day The La Martina Varsity Polo Day at Guards Polo Club is one of polo’s most historic trophies, dating back to the 1870s. This year’s polo began with Cambridge Old Blues defeating the Oxford Old Blues, 4-2 and also featured a Cartier Queen’s match Quarter Final. Each year, Oxford and Cambridge go head-to-head to lift the trophy; with Oxford dominating in recent years, it was little surprise to see them claim a convincing 8-2 win on Saturday 4 June at Guards Polo Club, with the Best Playing Pony chosen as Bella, played by Thomas Gordon-Colebrooke. Also played on the same day is the annual School’s contest played between Eton and Harrow, which highlights the talent across the years; the match saw Harrow narrowly defeat Eton 4-3.

SUPA Universities Summer All National Aspects Championships of Youth Polo

From the 10 – 12 of June 2022, the crowds gathered at the Offchurch Bury Polo Club for a fantastic three day SUPA Universities Summer National Championship 2022. Dubbed as the biggest polo tournament in the world, SUPA Nationals sees some of the most promising and committed university polo players from around the United Kingdom. This year’s Nationals saw a record-breaking number of participants, with 174 teams eager to compete across five divisions: Beginners, Median, Novice, Intermediate and SAPA/ Open. While the weather forecast indicated occasional showers, the scorching sun persisted and provided a perfect backdrop for a three-day polo-filled weekend. In addition, the surrounding open area along

Offchurch’s Ground 1 and Ground 2 polo pitches was an idyllic place to sit and enjoy the riveting matches, up close and personal. As expected, on the first day of the tournament, Friday saw the arrival of the majority of participants accompanied by their supportive friends and families. This was then followed by an elevated style of play from the players across all divisions. After the last chukka of the day, players went back to the camping site, where the struggle of hitting a ball proved to be far more manageable than setting up a tent! Joseph W. Rose, the president of University of East Anglia (UEA) Polo Club, described how camping was one of the highlights for him and his teammates, recounting that “This has allowed

old members to catch up while simultaneously bridging friendships with the new members of our respective polo clubs, as we the UAE, camped with Essex and Kent. Dan Golson a teammate of mine, even graced us with an on-site singing performance with a guitar accompaniment from others. In essence, it was like a festival but made more fun with polo”. Saturday’s action began as my team mates and I, The University of London (UoL) Polo Team, took on the first chukka of the day against No Hit Sherlock, and came out victorious. This Novice 4 match was a valuable learning curve for us, as it was the match that we missed the previous day. It taught my teammates and I the necessary lesson that while this was all fun Polo Times, July 2022

Moreover, it allowed us to appreciate the great effort which goes on behind the entire event, while also giving responsibility to students to abide by tournament demands, in terms of promptness. As the scorching day paved way to a much cooler and breezy night, players exchanged their polo jerseys and danced the night away in the marquee, wearing hilarious costumes, partying away until the early hours. Despite a few aching heads on Sunday morning, the competition was intense, with some teams vying for their first ever polo tournaments while others were playing against long time-time rivals for the last day of 60

Summer Nationals. While everyone displayed a commendable display of sportsmanship, members of the Oxford University Polo Club secured an impressive first place in Novice 2, Novice 3 Blue, Novice 4 Blue and SAPA 1/ Open division while garnering a second place for Intermediate 2 division. Exeter, Warwick, and Nottingham Polo Clubs also deserve a mention, as their players displayed a fierce standard of play, reflected on how often the respective teams frequented second or third place across multiple divisions. Additionally, two special new trophies were presented for the first time. The Betz Trophy is awarded to the winners of the Open or the highest division played in the tournament. The Quatro Amigos Trophy is awarded to the winners of Beginner 1. Named after outgoing Chairman

Charles Betz and family, the Betz Trophy was presented to Oxford Blue Dragons and the Quatro Amigos was presented to University of Warwick Polo Club by Harry Johnson, Chairman of Offchurch Bury Polo Club. The Trophies are sponsored by EmmPix.co.uk, official photographers of this SUPA event. This Summer Nationals is my second taste of the unparalleled adrenaline and excitement of a university polo tournament. Reflecting on that weekend, it is apparent that SUPA laid the foundations to my irrevocable love for the sport of the kings. I often tell my friends that ‘Polo is the love of my life and salt of my earth’. As cliché as it sounds, SUPA became a significant factor that shaped the person, the student, and the aspiring polo player, that I am now. For Youth polo dates, please turn to our What’s On pages

SUPA Universities Summer National Championships

The weekend was blessed with good weather which added to the atmosphere

For instance, being the most experienced player in my team, the Summer Nationals allowed me to employ leadership skills that I did not know I was capable of. This was manifested in how I was put in a position to coordinate with my teammates in training sessions, encouraging them that while polo cannot be learnt overnight, one will be able to reap the fruits of your labour in due time. During the tournament chukkas, I took the reins (metaphorically and literally) in directing how our game strategy would go, emphasising the crucial part of having fun during games and the debriefing that came after. These examples have allowed me to recognise that an effective leader constitutes multiple facets; sometimes you are the person orchestrating the game strategies, and other

times you are in charge of the pre-game song playlist. As a student, playing polo and effectively competing at SUPA Nationals has encouraged me to properly sort my priorities. My newfound dedication to the sport is echoed in how I have approached my postgraduate studies and the notion of “I have to study hard, so I can play harder”, became a constant mantra in my head. As an aspiring polo player, SUPA has become an avenue that made me realise the value of hard work and particularly the fulfilment that comes after seeing the fruits of your training. Our team captain, Zayd Sharif

Bitten by the ‘polo bug’ as I often joke with him, he went from being a nervous player to what I now confidently believe, has the makings of an upcoming stellar polo player. He securely led our team into multiple victories, even scoring a marvellous 3 goals of his own in one of the chukkas. Concurrently, my other teammates, Joey Zhou and Nathan Neckels, were also delightful additions to the team. Joey’s playful nature and Nathan’s British-infused banter helped with the pre-game nerves that were ever present throughout the tournament. This university polo tournament was also an incredible time to learn from long-standing members of the UoL Polo Team. The likes of Naji Aziz, Kenny Wu, Léa Duquenne and Dan Smith, contributed to the aggregate performance of my team. Their pearls of wisdom and dedication to polo is a succinct portrayal of the fact that there is always more learn in this exhilarating sport. Moreover, Summer Nationals also highlighted the consequential role that polo clubs, polo coaches and grooms possessed in ensuring a successful polo tournament. My team and I specifically, attribute our dramatic playing improvement to our polo coaches; Mikey Goodwill, Alex Choma and James Stanwick from Rugby Polo Club. From Mikey’s vociferous insistence that corrected my full shots, to Alex’s chukka drills and James’s reminders of what it takes to be an effective polo player, all of them held a pivotal role in the confidence that my team and I carried with us. Simultaneously, Rugby Polo Club’s grooms; Clare Hall, Tom Duffley and Jasmine Piper, who worked tirelessly throughout the nationals, were a reassuring presence that guaranteed we were on the best ponies for our matches. Their recognizable love for the polo ponies left me with upmost respect to the diligent work that goes behind the scenes in big polo events such as this. Altogether, there was a definite increase in the standard of play this year. The hours of dedicated training, practice, and patience that all participants have put in, was compounded into a sensational three days of polo. It resulted in an excellent display of polo put together by Nigel Mercer as well as the rest of the SUPA organising team: Luke Sandys-Renton, Lydia Styler and Caroline Grayson. Also the sponsors: Polo Times, RJ Polo, Black Hound Sports, EmmPix.co.uk and The Worshipful Company of Saddlers. On top of that, Tessa Collett and Grant Collett of Offchurch Bury Polo Club are to be commended for their astounding care that contributed to a smooth and enjoyable tournament. Coming up next is the University Challenge which will be held at Rugby Polo Club on the 11 – 12 November and we cannot wait to see you there! Polo Times, July 2022

Big Fall, Short Air Lift, Fast Kick Out A normal weekend polo story with impact Unplanned dismounting from the pony happens nearly in every game. It happens to top professionals, but also to the average weekend warrior. Most of the landings are soft and the player can continue with some minor bruises. Unfortunately, there are more risks involved than just height and speed. With the horse itself stumbling or sometimes the horse of your opponent may be involved as well. This can change a simple fall to a major accident. New standards of mandatory safety gear are constantly reviewed to improve the safety standards of polo. Even parachute federations teach their members how to roll a landing before they fly. Parkour and free runners can land and roll even on big jumps from high walls without any injury. Maybe with extra landing skills and specific training, the avoidable, simple injuries can be reduced in polo too.

to a nearby trauma centre or an airlift by helicopter. With modern shock absorbing textiles in safety gear, some amount of impact can be absorbed, but 1,000 pounds rolling over a person can still cause considerable harm.

Accident Pattern

After the safety protocol measures have started, with all the necessary initial investigations carried out, a definitive overview can be helpful to plan secondary diagnostics. Rural emergency stations can be very helpful to do this, where basic ultrasound, X-ray and lab tests can be executed. For more elaborated examinations like CT (Computer Tomography) and MRI (Magnet Resonance Image) a transfer to a more substantial clinic may be required.

Dismounting from a horse can happen at any speed and on any occasion, even when riding slowly or on the way back to the throwin. Slow falls are mainly without the ability to roll after hitting the ground, which is possible when more speed is involved. Heavy crashes as well as roll overs can be complicated by a post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) where the pain, trauma, and fear can explode with flashbacks and sleeplessness. From simple concussion of the head to more heavy impacts of the spine are feared. First impact happens to the soft tissue and is transferred to the musculoskeletal system and from there to the fragile inner organs. The average fall happens in less than a second. This is where only reflexes count and can change the way you fall. Transfer of the definitive load which impacts on the body is key. This is where new shock absorbing materials come in. When the primary survey of the pitchside emergency crew is executed, already the suspected of a higher impact and the potential for injury justifies a speedy transfer 64

Polo Times, July 2022

First Diagnostics and Treatments on The Field

The primary survey of the pitch-side medical safety team is the most important aspect. With limited resources and diagnostic tools, any suspicion of impact during the first body check justifies a swift transfer to the next medical care unit. Stabilisation of the body and minimising secondary injuries is key. Even initial small problems and injuries can have an influence on the return to play later.

Deforming impact on the front of the helmet

Second Survey and Definitive Care

Clinical Case Study

The player fell of the horse which stumbled. After hitting the ground initially with helmet and secondary face contact, he was struck by the horse’s legs on his back and was rolled on by the horse. With initial pain mostly in the back and pelvis, the helicopter was ordered from the pitch-side emergency team. In the regional hospital, conventional X-rays of the pelvis and spine, as well as ultrasound were performed. A standard blood test showed no evidence of major bleeding. Due to blood in the urine

Yard Focus Guy Schwarzenbach (2 goals) of Black Bears Polo It is a while since I have put together a Yard Focus, but I really enjoy doing them, and I always find it interesting how all yards feed slightly differently to suit their horses, players, schedules etc. The yards I choose to focus on have the horses’ welfare at the forefront of their management and I have generally worked with for a period of time so we all have the same expectations – maintaining condition, top line and energy throughout the season by ensuring a balanced diet is always received and forage is plentiful. I have had the pleasure of working with Guy’s grooms and horses at Black Bears for the last few seasons, and I really want to acknowledge the hard work Guy’s grooms

put in to get the horses looking so well during the summer months. Chloe Evason, Claudia Gilbert and Liz Tyson have, this season, prepared the horses for 15-22 goal polo, which is not always an easy feat, but they have definitely succeeded with maintaining access to forage at all times and balanced diets. They try and get the horses out in in the paddocks as much as possible during the season to benefit their bodies and minds! All the horses are out on good grass and haylage or hard feed, when required, over the winter months. When they come in to work after their winter break, they have Ease & Excel Mix to introduce some Earl Grey is an 8-year-old gelding, bred in Australia at Garangula (Black Bears’ farm in Australia), and arrived in the UK last summer. He has taken a while to settle into life in the UK, and now lives out in the field at night whilst stabled during the day, which really seems to suit him.

calories without the energy from starch/ cereals. Once their work increases, they will switch to Endurance Mix or Conditioning Mix depending on the individual, and oats added once playing tournament polo, which are fluctuated according to workload and temperament! Supplements are not really used, but all the horses have pre and probiotics (Protexin Gut Balancer) throughout the season to help support the beneficial fibre-digesting bacteria in the hind gut, and of course the all-important electrolytes during hot weather, when playing and working hard. I asked for six favourites and these are the six they chose:

Nutrition Focus Coota is a 13-year-old mare who was also bred at Garangula, Australia. She is very easy to have around, but can be fussy with her food, and doesn’t like small holed hay nets so has her hay on the floor. She does windsuck at times but never wears a collar.

Spider is a 14-year-old mare, bred at Garangula, Australia. She can be quite quirky and tricky to manage, especially at the beginning of the season where Ease & Excel seems to help her settle. She loves to run and will generally play in the first chukka and the last!

Gucci is a 13-year-old mare who was bred at Black Bears in the UK. She too is very easy to have on the yard and she likes to run! She has tied-up in the past, but every year the starch intake of her diet has increased, but we ensure the diet is always balanced, with electrolytes and hydration always monitored.

Playing Tips

Playing tips with Rege Ludwig Three Critical Moves of The Shoulder

Renowned polo coach, Rege Ludwig gives his expert advice on how to get more out of your game When hitting an offside fore shot, most players are aware of their torso rotating in a clockwise manner. That, in turn, causes the right shoulder to have rotated back so it can be rotated forward when hitting the offside fore shot. Within the process of hitting the ball, there are three other angles of the shoulder that are crucial to the purpose of creating power. 1. Upon the completion of the right shoulder having moved back from the clockwise rotation of your torso; your right shoulder should be pulled back an additional six to eight inches. Pulling your right shoulder back engages the mighty pectoral muscles of your chest, which according to seven goal player, Dr. John D Richards, in his book, Observations Upon the Nature of the Gallop and the Timing of a Polo Stroke and Form in Striking, written in 1939, “The sudden contraction of the great pectoral muscles at the front of the chest… is the most powerful force in the stroke”. 2. Once you have rotated your right shoulder back and have pulled it back an

additional six to eight inches, you should begin lifting your right shoulder up to the back side of your right ear. Within the process of lifting your right shoulder, you are stretching the muscles along the right side of your torso. The greater the degree to which those muscles are stretched, the greater the power they provide to the downswing. 3. Once you have lifted your right shoulder up to the back side of your right ear, you should then begin lifting your lower arm and mallet hand to where they are well above your head. At that point your arm is being rotated forward in the shoulder socket. Once rotated up and forward within the shoulder socket, your upper arm can then be rotated back and down to generate even greater power that can be used within the downswing. Within the process of teaching hitting the polo ball, I refer to the concept that angles equal power. From the perspective that angles equal power, your mallet arm should have an approximate twenty degree angle at the elbow when initiating the

downswing of an offside fore shot. Your arm should not straighten when moving the mallet back and up to the top of the downswing process. Your arm being straight tightens the shoulder, and that adversely affects the development and use of the three angles of the shoulder that were discussed earlier in this article. Those three angles being interfered with produces a detrimental effect on the power that can be generated from the shoulder. To identify the feel of correctly using your shoulder within the offside fore shot downswing, imitate throwing a baseball forward with some degree of intensity. The fact of the matter is, the way you use your shoulder to initiate the throwing motion of the baseball is the same way you should use your shoulder to initiate the downswing of the offside fore shot. The exception to that situation is, you will not be throwing forward. You will, instead, be throwing the mallet head down toward the polo ball on the ground, and then forward and up to complete the follow through phase,

OOPS In January of 2022 my intention was to release my educational program in May of 2022. That objective turned out to be a bit overzealous. I am now shooting for a release date of July 2022 The final product should contain five primary books of approximately one hundred pages each, i.e., an Introduction Book, a Riding Book, a hitting Book, a Strategy Book, and a Course Outline Book. Additionally, there will be approximately twenty-five booklets consisting of about ten pages each, detailing:

Hitting, A booklet for each of the twelve shots used in the game, another on: dribbling, another on turning the ball, another on gripping the mallet handle, another on the plane of swing, another on the hitting spot, etc.

Plane of swing equals a sheet of glass

Riding, One riding booklet details: collecting the horse’s body and stride, another accelerating, another decelerating, another changing direction by way of turning, and another changing direction by way of a lateral move), etc.

Strategy, there is a booklet for each of the positions; with each dealing with the offense and the defense perspectives of that position. There is another booklet on the throw in, another on the hit in, and another on set plays, etc.

The Throw in Weight on inner side of feet, (big toe) CORRECT

Weight on lateral side of foot (little toe) WRONG

Additionally, there will approximately twenty-five videos demonstrating what is described in each of the booklets. Each video will be approximately five-minutes-long.

Final bell

In association with Aprés Polo

Cruz Heguy has been taking the 2022 English season by storm as part of Great Oaks Les Lions, reaching the Final of The Justerini & Brooks Prince of Wales and winning The Cartier Queen’s Cup and all at just 18-years-old. With a polo lineage including his father, Eduardo ‘Ruso’ Heguy and his grandfather, Alberto Pedro Heguy, his polo prowess should come as little surprise

What is your biggest passion and why? My biggest passion are the horses and polo. I live in a family which loves polo and horses, so I think they have transmitted that passion to me.

Who were/are your favourite team mates? My favourite team mates are my cousins, Antonio and Silvestre, who I’ve been playing with since my first ever tournament and of course my father, Ruso.

Favourite food/dish? Asado or milanesa. Favourite hobby outside of polo? Going to the farm. Favourite celebrity and why? Lionel Messi or Michael Jordan, because they inspire me quite a lot. Best holiday destination & activity? La Pampa because everything that I love is there, my family, horses, polo and the farm. Best pony & why?

What is your all-time best polo memory? My all-time best polo memory is playing in La Pampa with my family during the summer.

Which sports do you like outside of polo? I like playing tennis, golf and football. Favourite TV series? I like the series The Last Dance.

At the moment Vasca Orgia is my best one, she’s been going really well in the UK polo season. Are you passionately superstitious? No. Describe yourself in three words? Passionate, shy and thankful.

Favourite song/ album? Any reggaeton song.
