Eight teams had entered the 6 goal Kingscote Cup and Finals’ day opened with the Subsidiary Owl Trophy. Quel Domage won a tight match 6-5 against Noon Giraffe.

Then the main Final on Ivy Lodge Ground was surprisingly one-sided with R&R Glasses and China beating CANI 12-3. The Subsidiary Final was much closer, ending in a 5-4 win for La Rosada over Coxwell.

Seven teams entered this year’s Gouldsmith Bowl 4-8 Goal, but the Final on Sunday 12 September saw Arabella Oppenheimer’s Hascombe Stud taking home the trophy with a 6-3 win against Chris Fagan’s Noon Giraffe. In the Subsidiary Final, Smith’s Polo beat R&R 5-2.

The Town Cup Final saw Arabella Oppenheimer’s Hascombe Stud just edging ahead in a close match against SONA Polo to take home a 6-5 win. Hascombe Stud’s Tommy Severn was awarded Most Valuable Player. Earlier, in bright sunshine, Dominic David’s Tafia Mafia took the Subsidiary 6½ to 5 against R&R.

In the closing matches of the season, Charlie’s Angels, led by Ollie Jones, won the 0 to 2 goal Associates Trophy, beating OKL Equestrian, led by Tom Beim, 6 goals to 3, and Noon Giraffe Juniors had a convincing win 4½-0 against CPPC.

Green Gates retained the Autumn Nations Trophy this year, with teamwork the key to their success. Isidro Strada, who was later named the Most Valuable Player, created a strong partnership with Cesar Crespo but every player contributed to this win. Louis Hine, who earlier in the day had won the schools’ Copenhagen Cup with Wellington College – ironically playing against Noor, a member of the Stowe school team – was strong in defence, producing some great rideoffs against Felix Esain and Benjamin Urquiza. Brian Stein, Chairman of Guards Polo Club, presented the prizes. This included the Polo Times Best Playing Pony to Strada’s eight-year-old Guadalupe Sandy Lane.

The concluding tournament of the season for the coveted Billy Walsh Cup was hotly contested by six teams this year. The competition was spread over two weekends, culminating with the Finals day on 12 September. So it was that, on this warm late-summer day, Benn Shepherd’s Oriflamme and Abi Anderson’s Avengers found themselves stepping out onto the turf to vie for the trophy.

The match started with Oriflamme a man down, Jason Warren having received a double yellow card in the last 30 seconds of the previous match. This meant he had a further spell to serve in the ‘sin bin’ before he could join the game. Segundo Darritchon, filling in for Juan Cruz Araya, wasted no time in pressing the advantage, scoring three goals by the end of the chukka. Oriflamme recovered with two goals from Will Penfold in the second. But the second half was dominated by the young partnership of Darritchon and Logan Anderson, and although Warren and Penfold fought hard, with some moments of brilliance from patron Shepherd, the order was too tall, Avengers running out winners 8-3½.
