LETTER FROM THE EDITOR I was in the home office reviewing and editing page layouts for this month’s Love Issue when I heard the news: Kobe Bryant confirmed dead in a helicopter crash. Worse yet, his daughter was later confirmed to be lost alongside him. To the family in their time of mourning and grief, we offer our deepest sympathies. The February 2020 issue of Polo Lifestyles is dedicated to Kobe Bryant and his memory.

Loss in life is unavoidable, but sudden loss all the harder.

WORLD POLO LEAGUE GRABS SNOW TROPHY The first-year team and sponsor captured the prestigious title and Bendura Bank Trophy Cup with a thrilling 10-8 victory over GP Mobility on a snowy Sunday in front of a sold-out VIP tent.

Roldan finished with a game-high eight goals. Ganzi and Peluso each had one.

World Polo League (Marc Ganzi, 2, Juan Bautista Peluso, 3, Nic Roldan, 8) finished the eight-team tournament undefeated with a 3-0 record. GP Mobility (Henrique Schalldach, 2, TC Marcus Schalldach, 2, Guilhermo Lins, 6) finished 2-1.

GP Mobility’s Marcus Schalldach was named Most Valuable Player. Lins, who led GP Mobility with five goals, earned the Fair Play Award. Joya, played

by Roldan and owned by Frenchman Pierre Henri Ngoumou, was selected Best Playing Pony.

“The crowd was great, they love their polo here,” Roldan said. “It was a great tournament and we were fortunate to come out with a win. It’s great for a firstyear team and World Polo League.”

Ngoumou was team captain for France in the International Cup in November at Grand Champions Polo Club and competed in the St. Regis World Snow Polo Championship in December.

The game was close between the two evenly balanced teams. GP Mobility had the advantage early with a 2-0 lead on handicap. World Polo League quickly dug itself out the hole with goals from Ganzi and Roldan. Lins’ 15-yard penalty conversion enabled GP Mobility to regain the lead, 3-2. But back-toback goals by Roldan gave World Polo League a 4-3 lead after the first chukker.

World Polo League had two-goal leads twice before GP Mobility narrowed the gap to one and trailed 7-6 at the half.

GP Mobility opened the third chukker with a goal from Lins to tie the game at 7-7. Peluso’s goal just before the bell gave World Polo League the lead again at 8-7.

The fourth chukker belonged to the World Polo League. Playing well on both ends of the field, World Polo League took a 10-7 lead on back-toback goals from Roldan. For his first goal the crowd-pleasing Roldan took the ball at the half line, bounced the ball three times on his mallet before hitting a tough angle neck shot to score.

Roldan scored an insurance goal before Lins added another field goal to end the game.

Local artist Stephanie Leitner presented a personal world to Fairest Player, Brazilian Guilherme Lins. “My enthusiasm for painting artworks about Polo has developed through the playful and, at the same time, incredibly dynamic intensity that this sport has on me.”

Saudi Arabia’s first official polo title was presented in Al Ula UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Nacho Figueras led Team Amaala to a 7-3 Grand Final victory in the twoday Al Ula Desert Polo tournament on Saturday against Team Al Ula to take Saudi Arabia’s first official polo title, 2020 Al Ula Desert Polo Champions.

The tournament was staged at the hispage 50

toric UNESCO World Heritage Site of Al Ula and organized through a partnership of the Royal Commission for Al Ula and the newly formed Saudi Polo Federation.

Forming part of the Winter at Tantora festival, running from December 19 to March 7, Al Ula Desert Polo is one of 12 weekends of cultural and sporting activities taking place at the ancient site.

Players from all over the world took to the Desert Polo Arena, including team members of the world-famous La Dolfina polo outfit from Argentina, including 10-goalers Adolfo Cambiaso, Pelon Stirling and Pablo Mac Donough, in addition to the world's most-recognizable polo player, Nacho Figueras.

The specially built Desert Polo Arena was situated in the heart of Al Ula,

an area of historical, cultural and archaeological significance and surrounded by towering sandstone outcrops, framing the on-pitch action for the assembled VIP guests.

The third-place playoff was won

by Team Al Nahla Bentley with HRH Sheikha Alya Al Maktoum scoring three of the side’s four goals and earning Most Valuable Player, for a 4-2 victory over Richard Mille.

Figueras, who was part of the winning Team Amaala, said: “It’s an amazing place with an amazing history, an amazing heritage and an amazing first tournament for the Saudi Polo Federation. I’m very honored to be here, and I’m delighted that we were able to win.”

The Dubai Polo Gold Cup Series 2020 kicked-off with the Silver Cup with two matches featuring four strong teams: UAE Polo, AM/UAE Polo, Habtoor Polo and Ghantoot Polo on

the grounds of Al Habtoor Polo Resort and Club.

The Silver Cup, an 18-goal handicap tournament, saw Tomas Panelo

score the opening goal of the match.

Polo worked to close in on its opponent by the third chukker as Santiago Cernadas delivered 3 goals for the team, closing halftime at 7.5 to 6 goals in favor UAE Polo.

Both teams delivered their best game with a notable score from the young Nour Abu Khadra as he shot his first goal on his debut to the high page 58

goal league. Sheikha Maitha bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the patron of UAE Polo team, scored one for the team close to the end of the chukker that allowed them to maintain their lead. The final chukker saw the Panelo brothers take home the win and closed the game at 13.5 goals to 10.

The anticipated second match between Habtoor Polo and Ghantoot Polo teams did not disappoint as the crowd witnessed another nail-biting game.

The first goal of the match was from Marcos Araya from Ghantoot Polo however, Habtoor Polo team took the lead by the end of the first chukker and held on to it until the second with a 1 goal advantage. Both teams picked

up the pace and were at a tie by halftime. The crowd cheered as both teams tried to score goals which resulted in a tie by the end of the fourth chukker.

The teams demonstrated a strong defense during the last game with Gregorio Gellosi taking Ghantoot Polo ahead at 9 goals against 7.

Felix Esien’s steady performance

and Martin Podesta’s goal had both teams at a tie with thirty seconds left on the clock. With a sixth chukker looming and four seconds left Facundo Sola took the victory home for Habtoor Polo team ending the game at 10 goals to 9.

St. Moritz, Switzerland – The by-line of St. Moritz is ‘Top of the World’ and sitting in the packed grandstands for the Finals, it did truly feel like there is no place better to be anywhere on the globe.

Record crowds descended upon the iconic frozen lake, set in the beautiful, sun-bathed setting of the Engadin page 64

Valley, to watch the snow polo giants do battle. The sunshine was super-hot, the champagne ice-chilled, the setting unbeatable and the polo truly world-class.

The first match of the day was the La Martina Trophy played between Badrutt’s Palace and Maserati for third and fourth place. Melissa Ganzi made history last year by being crowned as the ‘First Lady of Snow Polo’ to secure

victory for her team as the first female player to do so.

This year it was another first for the Ganzis as Melissa was joined on her team by her husband Marc. The couple are the first husband and wife duo to play in a final in St. Moritz - and what a match it was. Those that had been expecting the players to merely go through the motions were proved wrong from the first throw-in as

Maserati seized on the ball and scored within seconds of the starting bell; quickly capitalizing on the 2.5 goal lead they had for goal allowance.

But the impressive work rate of Nic Roldan, teamed with the amazing 8-goal skills of his teammate Alejandro Novillo Astrada, showed that Badrutt’s meant business from the get-go and were clearly not taking the Maserati attack lightly as they swiftly notched up two goals to make it anybody’s game 3.5-2 in Maserati’s favor at the end of the first chukka. As the teams fought for possession in a wonderful, page 70

almost whistle-less passage of play, an amazing goal from Roldan and one in reply from Adrian Laplacette Jr. meant it was too close to call at half-time with the scores resting at 5.5-3. There was no score in the third chukka, but this did not reflect the end-to-end display of world-class polo as the battle for third place continued.

The fourth chukka was edge of the seat stuff as Swiss National Team player Fabio Meier delighted the crowd with an amazing goal for Maserati to match that of any higher handicapped player.

However, Meier’s goal seemed to ignite

the afterburners of the Badrutt’s Palace team with Novillo Astrada scoring from a great setup by Melissa Ganzi, followed just 30 seconds later by him once again finding the posts. AN EXPECTED CLASH OF THE TITANS So it was on to the climax of the weekend: the final between Azerbaijan - Land of Fire and St. Moritz. After the clash between these two teams only yesterday which resulted in a very close score, it was certainly hard to predict who would be victorious.

Talk in the players’ ranks was of an expected Clash of the Titans with both teams giving their all to secure the coveted title in this, the 36th year. The Azeri team started with a half goal advantage due to handicap, but despite expectations of a cohesive and multi-faceted attacking style, the boys in white did not ignite their polo fires and the result was that Valery Mishchenko’s ‘Red Devils’ in the iconic scarlet shirts of St. Moritz found the posts twice before the half time bell with nothing in reply from the Azeris.

In the second half, the Azerbaijan - Land of Fire team rekindled their polo flame and began to give 10 goal arena player Max Charlton and 4 time-winner of the event, Nacho Gonzales, something to think about with a changed game plan. However, together, team St. Moritz played strong, close polo and despite their best endeavors, the Azeri team could not sufficiently shut down Max Charlton and his red shirted polo assassins in their quest for victory. With the wind beginning to pick up, it meant that accuracy on goal was hard, and two pivotal goal chances were missed by Azerbaijan, but it was a case of third time lucky as a goal from the Azerbaijan Captain, the talented Elchin Jamalli signaled the start of their offensive attack bringing the scores to a close 1.5 -3.

who needs a special mention – the Frenchman’s work rate was off the chart, with an easy, fluid style that attracted little response from the two mounted umpires. His endeavors were rewarded with a great goal that sealed the deal for his team. As the final bell sounded the final score was 1.5 -4.

While the Polo Times Best Playing Pony was awarded to Casanova played by Nacho Gonzalez for the majority of the fourth chukka, who received a bespoke pony rug and 200 Swiss Francs for the grooms.

And so, after such an amazing three days of fantastic polo, the birthplace of polo bid farewell to the 36th edition of the event. The Snow Polo World Cup St. Moritz 2020 had managed to surpass all expectations and had once again been a triumph at every level and a credit to Reto Gaudenzi and his 250 strong team. The iconic resort of St. Moritz had achieved the pinnacle of beauty, hospitality and world class polo. If you were not here this year, you have missed out on something truly special.

Bedrooms feature natural textures and tones from polished timber floorboards through to marine-themed artwork.

The Restaurant at Hotel Wailea offers romantic dining with a view from the balcony or more intimate low-walled garden. Hawaiian ingredients—think Kona lobster and Kauai shrimp—are highlighted throughout the Italian menu. THE CLOISTER AT SEA ISLAND GA The Cloister was founded more than 80 years ago. The original building was razed in 2006 to make way for the new 175-room Cloister and beach club. The $350 million expansion added modern amenities and a spa, while retaining the original Mediterranean-style red-tiled roofs, stuccoed arches and tower stairways.

The property’s interior evokes the feeling of a private home. All rooms come with butler service and are dressed in floral print draperies with trim custom-made in Portugal, dark wood armoires and deep soaking tubs.

Suites run as large as 2,200; the views vary from ocean to river to garden to marsh.

The charm is in the details. The finishes are muted, never shiny. The artwork is by local painters and European masters alike.

A collection of 670 handmade Turkish rugs cloak the floors. There’s a smoking lounge, an atrium and the Spanish Lounge, with stained glass windows and pocket doors.

CALISTOGA RANCH CALISTOGA CA Though just near downtown Calistoga, this collection of cottages feels like a woodsy escape, its cedar-shingled buildings blending into its forested canyon setting. Floor-to-ceiling windows, indoor-outdoor showers and spacious decks keep the focus on nature. The look inside is more minimalist with a muted palette, clean-lined furniture and a focus on natural textures—rough-hewn woods, woven seagrass, stone.

The Golden Globes are the first red carpet event of the award season, so the expectations are high for stars to come out with a bang.

Aside from being the first, the red carpet of the Golden Globes is also one of the most glamorous, prestigious and anticipated of all award shows.

The looks from this year’s Golden Globes were great…for the most part.

We did have some surprises, what with a few stars who we expected to wow us but did the exact opposite. For example, in the case of Jennifer Lopez, who looked like a giant gift wrapped up in a green and gold ribbon, or Charlize Theron in that corseted green dress with a train. Despite those mishaps, let’s turn our attention to the best fashion of the night.

Black was one of the trending colors on the red carpet this year with Jennifer Aniston wearing a plain black gown from Dior. Rooney Mara and Michelle

Pfeiffer both wore sleeveless black dresses, with Mara in a Givenchy, and Pfieffer in a Brunello Cucinelli.

Winnie Harlow wore a fringe dress from LaQuan, which was more suited for an after party than for the carpet, but she looked stunning nonetheless.

How can we forget Ana de Armas in her Ralph & Russo Couture princess gown looking absolutely breathtaking? But the best-dressed star award went to Kerry Washington with her risky choice of a long, black skirt with only a gorgeous diamond chain as a top under a black blazer. page 131

TOP FW 2020 MEN'S COLLECTIONS

T

he first month of 2020 heralded a heightened sense of political activism shown through designers’ creativity, as evidenced by many Top 10 Fall 2020 Men’s Fashion shows.

Perhaps most ubiquitous was the concept of gender-nonconformity and inclusion of the non-binary elements, illustrated in various degrees

by Marni, JW Anderson, Dior Men’s and others. Alessandro Michele of Gucci tackled issues of gender head-on by calling out toxic masculinity and producing a collection that embraces the idea of carefree boys

playing dress-up, heedless of the gender norms society might try to impose on them.

Interestingly, Virgil Abloh for Louis Vuitton also delved into childhood memories for inspiration, although the results were less gender-fluid than Gucci’s collection. The outcome did include various interpretations of men’s suiting that incorporated out-sized frills and ruffles, plus a shirt with lace-like cut-outs using shapes from Louis Vuitton’s iconic luggage motif.

Perhaps the most impactful political statement came from Raf Simons,

whose “Solar Youth” walked down the runway with arms constricted by clear plastic, zippered textile wraps and furlined hand warmers under a blaze of yellow light, which seemed to mimic sunshine struggling through a haze of smog. Dystopian and post-apocalyptic with hints of grunge and metal, Simons seemed to be channeling the sad beauty of a dying world, which future generations may inherit if we do not implement systems to reduce ecological degradation in the coming decades.

The stylish Italian chef was in New York for a brief visit and he couldn’t conceal his excitement for a project in Los Angeles: the new Gucci Osteria which is opening stateside in spring 2020.

The Rhone Valley wine region of France is roughly divided into the two sub-regions of Northern and Southern, which, considering their geographic positioning, differ dramatically in their climate, topography and geology.

Northern Rhone has a continental climate with overall cooler temperatures, more precipitation and less sunshine.

The landscape is rugged with steep hills along the banks of the river, and the soil is composed mainly of hardened granite. The Southern Rhone is gentler, and proximity to the Mediterranean Sea influences its mild weather. The land flattens here, and the soil becomes more agriculturally manageable, comprised predominantly of limestone and alluvial deposits. The farther south, the warmer it gets allowing for a wider range of grape varieties to be planted.

Twenty-plus wine grapes are grown in Southern Rhone wherein the north’s more restrictive climate, the choice of grapes is limited to only a handful.

Finally, the north-south division is reflected quantitatively. The north boasts page 160

appellations of stronger pedigree and international renown: Hermitage, Côte Rotie and Condrieu, but it produces only about five percent of the whole Rhone Valley wines. The south, with its multitude of sub-regions, offers a variety of styles of wines of substantially different qualities. Châteauneuf-duPape appellation is, without a doubt, the region’s flagship and pride.

In the year 1305 the cardinal of Bordeaux, Bertrand de Got, was elected Pope of the Catholic Church and assumed the name, Clement V. Having had strong affiliations with France and exhibiting a bit of the classic French arrogance, he moved the capital of papacy from Rome to the French city of Avignon, giving birth to a line of the so-called “Avignonese Popes” who flourished until 1377.

The reign of Clement V was relatively short, only lasting until 1314, but in that period, he developed a reputation of an avid connoisseur and a passionate wine drinker. Burgundy was his wine of choice, but he didn’t shy away from wines of other regions. The city of Avignon lies along the banks of the Rhone River, where vines had grown and wines been made for centuries before the Pope’s residency in the region; their quality and reputation were sub-standard.

A small village in proximity to Avignon became a frequent vacation destination for the clergy of the era. It later came to be known as Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

During their rule, the Avignonese Popes contributed greatly to popularizing the viticulture in the region.

Traditionally the bottles of wine from the region sport an engraving of a tiara, a ceremonial head wear of Popes.

Until the mid-19th century, Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines did not stand on their own and were mainly shipped in bulk up north to Burgundy.

At the end of the 1800s and during the early 1900s, the popularity of Châteauneuf -du-Pape rose to its peak, but without any legislative regulations, fraud plagued the region. Namely, wines and grapes from outside infiltrated the area to benefit from its reputation.

There needed to be action. Starting in the early 1920s, a local syndicate of wine enthusiasts took it upon themselves to implement laws and regulations to protect the authenticity of the local wines. As a result, in May of 1936, a decree was published to become the first wine-making Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée (AOC) in France.

wines, with the reds dominating over 90 percent of the appellation’s production.

At the inception, Châteauneuf du Pape allowed 13 different grape varieties in their blends. Eventually, the number increased to 19 (10 reds and nine whites), with Grenache Noir leading (about 70 percent of the total vineyard surface), followed by Syrah, then Mourvedre and the rest of the gang.

The vineyards of Châteauneuf-du-Pape are bordered by the Rhone River from the west and are situated on rolling land and a vast plateau composed of diverse soil. One of the characteristic features of the landscape here are the galets, which are large, whitish pebbles carpeting many of the vineyards.

There are 7,746 acres of vineyards in the region, which produce an average of 14 million bottles each year. Grenache is perfectly suitable for the region with its strong resistance to heat, drought and wind factors. It is high in sugar content, so alcohol management, especially in overly hot vintages, can become an is-

Red Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines are almost always blends, and wineries have their unique recipes as to which grapes constitute the blend. Grenache, on its own, can sometimes lack acidity and tannins. Syrah, Mourvedre and Cinsault are often thrown into the mix to add density, firmness, and additional aromatic nuance.

At their best, the red wines of Châteauneuf-du-Pape can be texturally sublime and generously flavorful. They have excellent aging potential, and when coming from acclaimed producers and good vintages, can easily last several decades.

Their flavor profile exhibits the warmth of the region. In their classic expression, page 161

the aromas are redolent of warm, summer farmland, Provençal herbs, white pepper, lavender, raspberry confiture and a sprinkle of better times to come.

Did you know? Mistral is a strong wind originating in the north and sweeping down south toward the Mediterranean Coast, often reaching speeds of 60 to 70 miles per hour. It is most active during the change from winter to spring, often causing damage to the crops. During the summertime, it can actually have a cooling effect on the overheated vineyards.

Even though white wines constitute only about seven percent of the region, they should not be treated as an afterthought.

The most prominent white varieties of the area are Clairette, Grenache Blanc, Roussanne and Bourboulenc. The whites are tougher to cultivate in the hot climate of the region, but in favorable vintages, the wines can be delicious with enticing flavors of tropical fruits of papaya, guava and mango. They can boast impressive richness, concentration, and

complexity, allowing them to age gracefully for years.

Did you know? Châteauneuf-du-Pape has one of the wackiest wine laws in the world, one borne out of 1950s UFO hysteria. A municipal decree was passed and is upheld today, which states: “The overflight, the landing and the takeoff of aircraft known as flying saucers or flying cigars, whatever their nationality is, are prohibited on the territory of the community.”

Châteauneuf-du-Pape produces only a small percentage of all wines in the Southern Rhône region. Other appellations make wines in a variety of styles: reds, whites, rosés and dessert wines.

Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines tend to be on the expensive side. The neighboring regions often offer great alternatives for a fraction of the price: Gigondas, Vacqueyras, Rasteau and Lirac, to name a few. These satellite regions are full of young, ambitious winemakers who strive and often succeed in making a

mark on the international wine scene.

Gigondas is considered the diminutive cousin of Châteauneuf-du-Pape; Vacqueyras, Gigondas’ little brother, where more and more quality wines that give Châteauneuf du Pape a run for its buck are produced yearly.

Beaumes de Venise, aside from making simple, easy-drinking red wines, produces Muscat Beaumes de Venise.

This vin doux naturel is a youthful, delicately fortified sweet wine made from the intensely floral Muscat grapes. The rosés of Southern Rhône are dry, fresh and full of sunshine, making them great sippers and a versatile food pairing.

THE SLOW ROAD TO LOVE? Is the secret to lasting love to take it slow? As in really, really slow?

Millennials are going on fewer dates, having less sex and marrying later. Do they know something about love that the rest of us don’t?

The millennial generation is putting that theory to the test, opting for what the biological anthropologist Helen Fisher calls slow love. Studies show that millennials are dating less, having less sex and marrying much later than any generation before them, and a younger generation appears to be following in their footsteps.

These changes have prompted hand wringing among some experts who speculate that hookup culture, anxiety, screen time, social media and helicopter parents have left us with a generation incapable of intimacy and commitment. (The Atlantic recently declared we are in the midst of a sex recession.)

But Fisher takes a more generous view and suggests that we could all learn a thing or two from millennials about the benefits of slow love. It’s not that millennials are wrecking marriage, she says. It may be that they value it more.

“It seems everyone is swept up in a very myopic understanding of sex, love and romance,” said Fisher, a senior research fellow at the Kinsey Institute. “I would like people to understand that while

millennials are not marrying yet, and they are not having as much sex as my generation, the reasons for this are good.”

The millennial cohort is roughly defined as those who were born in the 1980s to the early 2000s — although there is some debate about the boundaries. Millennials, due in part to their digital savvy, already are credited with significant changes in how we live, work and interact.

But what is particularly striking is how quickly the cohort has rewritten the rules for courtship, sex and marriage.

In 2018, the median age of first marriage was approaching 30 (29.8 for men and 27.8 for women). That’s more than a five-year delay in marriage compared to 1980, when the median age was 24.7 for men and 22 for women.

A 2017 study in the Archives of Sexual Behavior found that many younger millennials in their early 20s aren’t having sex, and are more than twice as likely to be sexually inactive than the previous generation. Another study found that American couples ages 25 to 34 spend an average of six and a half years together before marrying, compared with an average of five years for all other age groups.

Critics say digital saturation has made millennials more socially isolated,

restless and entitled, which could explain why they are having less sex than earlier generations. And when millennials do have sex, it’s often viewed as less meaningful because they engage in hookups or sexual relationships described as friends with benefits.

Fisher, author of “Anatomy of Love: A Natural History of Mating, Marriage, and Why We Stray,” has devoted her career to studying love and relationships.

Most recently she has collected data on more than 30,000 people related to current courtship and marriage trends.

Fisher believes that instead of criticizing and judging millennials, perhaps we should be paying more attention. It’s possible, she said, that today’s singles are carving a more successful path to lasting love than previous generations.

“We can all learn from people who don’t want to waste a lot of time doing things that are going nowhere,” said Fisher, the co-author of a chapter on slow love in the 2018 anthology “The New Psychology of Love,” published by Cambridge University Press.

She notes that people who date three years or more before marrying are 39 percent less likely to divorce than people who rush into marriage. “This is a real extended period of the pre-commitment stage,” said Fisher. “With slow love, maybe by the time people walk down the aisle they know who they’ve page 167

got, and they think they can keep who they’ve got.”

Ask millennials and they will tell you that there is nothing casual about their approach to sex, dating and romance.

“Hooking up with someone doesn’t mean that millennials now don’t value marriage,” says Anne Kat Alexander, who at 23 is in the second wave of the millennial generation. “If anything, they value marriage more because they are putting a lot more forward thinking into that decision.”

Fisher says her research suggests today’s singles seek to learn as much as possible about a potential partner before they spend time, energy and money on courtship. As a result, the path to romance has changed significantly.

Whereas a first date used to represent the getting-to-know-you phase of a courtship, now going on an official date with someone comes later in the relationship.

And for some singles, sex has become the getting-to-know you phase of courtship. In a study conducted for Match. com, Fisher found that among a representative sample, 34 percent of singles had sex with somebody before the first date. She calls it the sex interview.

“In my day you went out on a first date with someone you didn’t know very well, and you went to dinner or mini golf,” she said. “The first date has page 168

changed — it’s time consuming and expensive. Now they have a sex interview with a person to see if they want to invest in a first date.”

Alexander, who lives in Princeton and identifies as bisexual, said she and her partner want to finish their education, start their careers and be on solid financial footing before marriage. “To be successful in a marriage you have to be compatible in a lot of different ways,” she says. “Sex is one for those vectors of compatibility where I feel like millennials want to make sure they’re also compatible.”

For millennials, financial issues also loom large in their decisions about relationships. They talk about the burden of student debt, and their desire to find meaningful work in an increasingly impersonal job market. Many say their lives were deeply affected by the 2008 financial crisis as they watched their parents lose businesses, struggle with debt and even go through divorces.

“When I first met my fiancé, I asked, ‘What’s your credit score?’ ” said Lucy Murray, 24. “In the long run, if we’re talking about marriage, buying a place together, having joint bank accounts and putting cars in each other’s names, those are big financial decisions that will be linked permanently for both of us. That’s why I ask right away.”

Financial issues continue to influence

the couple’s relationship. They recently moved to Syracuse from New York City because housing prices are lower. They also canceled wedding plans and may eventually elope. “Weddings are expensive,” said Murray.

The trends set by the millennials appear to be continuing into the next generation, often called Generation Z. “It’s the first generation to spend their entire adolescence in the age of the smartphone,” said Jean Twenge, a psychology professor at San Diego State University and author of the book “iGen,” which describes young people today as less rebellious, but also less happy and unprepared for adulthood. “They spend less time with each other face-to-face, which may be connected with why they are less likely to have sex with each other.”

But Fisher believes today’s singles are setting a good example for future generations by having a more thoughtful view of marriage and commitment. “Love is fickle,” said Fisher. “The more stability you can bring to this, the more likely you are going to find something that really works and works long term.”

Understanding the importance of jumping rope is great, but knowing how to incorporate it correctly is gold. Here is a sample workout utilizing basic exercises, which are taken to new levels through super-setting with a Jump Rope: THE ELEMENTARY TOTAL BODY WORKOUT Exercise 1: Lunges w/ dumbbells = 3 sets of 20 reps with moderate to heavy weight Super-Set 1: Jump Rope two feet quick = 3 sets of 30 seconds Exercise 2: Deadlifts w/ bar or dumbbells = 4 sets of 8 reps with moderate to heavy weight Super-Set 2: Jump Rope one foot = 4 sets of 30 seconds (split time between feet) Exercise 3: Pull-Up to push-up = 5 sets of fail reps (minimum 8 reps of pull-ups and 15 reps of push-ups) Super-Set 3: Jump Rope 3 way = 5 sets of 45 seconds (one foot, other foot, both feet, switch between all) NOTE: the rest time between sets should be no more than 60 seconds.

This workout is simple, but if performed 1-2 times per week can shred your physique. All exercises performed are challenging, yet still elementary. There is no originality in them, but that is the point. Incorporating a Jump Rope into your workouts, even with basic exercises, can turn each movement into a fat burning muscle shredding workout.

THE WINNING MENTALITY: HOW TO LIVE IN THE MOMENT

Have you ever been in a semi-conscious state, when suddenly you snap into a fully conscious moment? Or have you ever started to think about your six-page long “to-do” list and asked yourself, “Did I brush my teeth this morning?” even though you completed the task two minutes prior.

Thinking about what you must do tomorrow, or all that happened yesterday can make your brainwaves look like a major city freeway during rush hour traffic on a Tuesday evening. Whether planning, organizing, worrying, or reliving past experiences, these are thoughts that can take up valuable real estate in your mind, but what these thoughts are really doing is taking you out of the present moment.

Real-life happens in the here and now, and if you can teach yourself to be as in the moment as possible, you will find that your performance will elevate, your production will increase, and your overall well-being will improve.

Learning from past experiences is important, as is setting goals for your future. However, you do not want to have those thoughts affect the here and page 188

now. You should become familiar with the acronym “WIN,” which stands for What’s Important Now.

Being present and focusing on the task at hand are foundations of the WIN mentality. Numerous elements of life are out of your control: winning, outcomes, other people, statistics and the past and the future. All of these factors require focus, and when you focus your attention on them, you take yourself out of the present, making it more difficult to be successful at the task at hand. The only thing you should be focusing on is the task in front of you, which is your process, focus, belief, your attitude, effort, and your actions.

When the WIN acronym was presented to me, I could not help but reflect on playing varsity basketball my junior and senior years of high school. This time in my life is a great reminder of why it is important to live in the present.

Your chance of injury will increase when you remove yourself from the present because you may skip over important details. For example, rushing through a workout because you are thinking about what you have to do afterward will distract you from the exercise’s proper form. Next thing you know, you pull a muscle in your back or hamstring, and now your mobility is limited for the next month.

You may also miss important information when you remove yourself from the present. For example, if you are distracted during a executive meeting, and they ask for your opinion on how to market the newest company product, , you may not be prepared to answer the question, which gives the impression that you were not listening. The mind may wander, and we cannot control

During my junior year, I was the 12th man on the roster, so I accepted my role and that my playing time would be limited. During that year, I cheered my heart out to encourage and motivate my teammates, and I treated each practice like it was a game because that was my time to get on the floor and play. I knew that if I worked hard and gave it my all, then not only would I benefit, but my teammates would as well. My senior year came around, and I was excited to have an expanded role, however, to my surprise, it stayed the same. I was devastated.

I felt like the joy of basketball was being taken from me. I constantly asked myself, “What am I doing wrong? Why am I not playing? Why doesn’t the coach like me?” There were even times when I cried after games because I did not get a chance to help the team. Ten years later, I realized that I missed out on playing my senior year of basketball with my five best friends because I was constantly focused on what was out of my control. My junior year was so much more enjoyable and memorable because I was present. During

MOLD YOUR MIND my senior year, I did not understand this concept, which, in turn, made this precious moment one to forget.

When you are present, you experience more freedom and joy and you increase your ability to make on-the-spot decisions. When you are not present, you experience more stress due to being in a constant state of worry or planning, your mind fills with more clutter because you are constantly thinking and your decision making becomes negatively impacted because your thoughts are elsewhere. Therefore, it is vital to build self-awareness around your focus.

Understanding when, where and why you lose concentration, as well as when you are not fully present, will help you know when it is time to act and get back into the here and now.

One of the most efficient ways to get back into the present moment is to focus on your breathing. Whether it

is one, two, five or ten breathes, make sure they are deep and that you focus on each inhalation and exhalation individually. Some individuals find it helpful to count each breath; either way, the act of focusing on breathing places your attention on something that is happening right now. Not only does it set your attention on one area, but proper, deep breathing facilitates relaxation throughout the body because you are bringing in more oxygen to the system.

When your mind is racing, and it has too much going on, your body will tense up, and you will feel an increase in your stress levels. Therefore, breathing can not only help you bring your attention back to the present moment but can also help decrease stress.

You can supplement your breathing with an action or a cue, to help bring your attention back to the present. This cue can be anything from a phrase,

to clapping your hands. A phrase that sticks with me and that I preach to the athletes I coach is “be where your feet are.” It reminds me that the only place my mind should be is where my feet are. When I feel myself not being present, I take a moment, look down, check my feet, and say “be where your feet are.”

No matter what your competitive environment is, your biggest competitor will always be yourself. When your mind is too busy focusing on yesterday’s adversity, something a co-worker said to you or all that you must do before 5 p.m., you will not be able to be successful at the task in front of you.

We cannot control what comes into our mind or where our mind goes, because your mind will wander, but we can control bringing out attention back to the present as quickly as possible. Do not beat yourself up over not being present.

Instead, focus on your breathing and get back into the present. page 189
