MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

Dear Friends, Community arises from sharing. At Poly, we share values, aspirations, efforts, and ideals in the service of educating and raising our children, our students. There is no higher priority. That simplicity of purpose is the foundation of a strong school community. When everyone contributes, when everyone cares, a school can accomplish anything it sets its sights on. Poly accomplished so much this year, all thanks to your generous support and vigorous efforts. We expanded our bus network to serve virtually our entire population, including the Lower School campus. Students, who previously had to take public transportation to get to our bus lines, are now able to walk to our bus stops. We made huge technological strides for our school with the launch of the new Parent Portal. Families now enjoy an easy-to-navigate interface to access students’ schedules, grades and grade history, progress reports and report cards, school directories, and personalized messaging. More enhancements are on the horizon that will improve the Poly digital experience. Much gratitude to our Parents’ Association leaders for their collaboration and insights. In collaboration with parents, students, alumni, and faculty, we have put forth numerous diversity and equity initiatives that focus on inclusion, diversity training, and a commitment to seeking diverse and talented educators. In the fall, a new academic department, the Institute for Ethics and Leadership (IfEL) will launch. It will

be responsible for Poly’s comprehensive Nursery through Grade 12 character education program. More people want their children to attend Poly. Over the past three years, we have experienced a 26% increase in applications to the school. Students and families report having better programmatic Head of School Audrius Barzdukas P’20 experiences at Poly: the congratulates Tien Lardner ‘19 at Commencement. Dean system; improvements in financial aid (FA) by meeting 100% of demonstrated need, and adding college test prep and diversity fly-in programs; and longer-term college counseling with deeper FA counseling. Our Arts program has been elevated to support students’ creative pursuits and opportunities through new initiatives like our new artist-in-residence program and partnerships with The Brooklyn Museum and CORA dance, among others. A new turf field and weight room; the addition of a female strength coach and female athletic trainer; and this year, a new academic schedule that will increase teaching and learning time in our Middle and Upper schools, are all part of improvements to our students’ overall experience. Poly students have better college options. For the second year in a row, we set a record for the percentage of students admitted to US News and World Report’s Top 25 Colleges. It was also the second year in a row that the highest number of Poly students were admitted to their top choice colleges. Record high percentages of FA students are being accepted into colleges that meet 100% of demonstrated need. Poly’s campuses are in better condition with enhancements to fire, electrical, plumbing, security, HVAC, irrigation, and drainage systems. Portable stands were placed in the back fields and outdoor furniture was installed in the Quad. The campuses look better because of improved landscaping, painting, repairs, and general attention to detail. We are pursuing sustainable upgrades as well. Solar engineers and educators from NYU and Solar1 led an interactive workshop with students that culminated in the students building two solar + battery storage tables which can be used to charge phones, tablets, and laptops. Additionally, Commons became a Certified Green Restaurant®. We have achieved much as a school. None of it would be possible without your generosity of spirit and tangible support for Poly. Yet, we have much to do. Ours is a community that looks forward as we seek to inspire and empower our students to fully explore their talents and ambitions. We must do it together—parents, alumni, faculty, staff, friends, and volunteers—for there is no other way. That’s how strong communities prosper. That’s the Poly way. With abiding gratitude,

MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD CHAIR

Dear Poly Community, As an alumnus and parent, Poly continues to impact my life. It’s incredible to witness how the school has progressed over the years. When I graduated from Poly in 1978, the school had just completed its first year of coeducation. In 2018 –19, for the first time in the school’s history, Poly was 50% boys and 50% girls. We continue to move forward. My sons started at Poly in Nursery; the elder will graduate in June. I am grateful that Poly is preparing them well for a future full of promise and inspiring them to pursue their dreams. As Board Chair, I am especially thankful to each and every donor listed in this report. These gifts demonstrate our shared belief in the lasting value of a Poly education. This report is a celebration of you, our generous community. Annual Giving is Poly’s primary fundraising priority and it is vital to the vibrancy of our educational programs and financial health. We are grateful for every gift. Because of the outpouring of support you have shown, our students enjoy opportunities to pursue every intellectual, artistic, athletic, or other goals they have set for themselves. Annual Giving is also key to financial aid, a major vehicle that has distinguished Poly as one of the most diverse and inclusive independent schools in New York City. This year, you set a new record by achieving the highest Annual Giving total in Poly’s history. My heartfelt appreciation goes out to everyone who has supported Poly with their time. This spirit of generosity is further evidence of Poly’s remarkable community. Our dedicated volunteers play a pivotal role in the Annual Giving effort. This year, to further support our school, strengthen the bonds and create new friendships within our community, Poly launched its parent-driven Party Book. Thanks to all who hosted and attended the Party Book events! Poly’s Board of Trustees is proud to foster a community that is united in its aspiration to give our student body the best experiences in order to ensure that Poly’s tradition of excellence continues. As you read these pages and learn of the amazing things your generosity powers, I can’t emphasize enough how grateful we are for your support. Poly succeeds because of you, our amazing community—the Poly family. Together, we are making great things happen. Gratefully,

Character

Character. It is the anchor of Poly’s mission statement and cornerstone of the holistic educational experience of our school. How character development is woven into Poly’s program is the focus of a new department, “Character is hard to define, but for me, Institute for Ethics and Leadership (IfEL), that launched this fall. Headed by Motoko L. Maegawa, Director of Diversity, Equity, and Social it really boils down Justice, Brian Filiatraut, Director of Sustainability, and Elijah Sivin, Director to empathy and of Service Learning, IfEL encompasses a comprehensive Nursery to Grade 12 character education program. Its goal is to empower all learners and altruism. . . stakeholders to support a diverse and equitable community, commit to We as Poly students thoughtful service, and enact sustainable and resilient practices, in the need to have a sense name of a joyful life centered on wellness and the growth of mind, body, of empathy and and character. Character development in education is a vital and far-reaching goal. even love for all Poly’s program is based on four pillars: Sustainability, Service Learning, those around us.” Equity and Social Justice, and Health and Wellness. “To me, character in the classroom means acknowledging that none of us works alone,” explained —Francesca Hadley ‘20 history teacher Virginia Dillon. “All academic pursuit depends on learning from others and respectful collaboration.” With this year’s new 9th grade grade Ethics and Leadership course and IfEL curriculum development for all faculty being offered, by the time Poly students receive their diplomas, they will have honed skills of reflection on how learning—both within and beyond the classroom—supported their personal character development and sense of self. As Kadyn Liburd ‘21 said, “I believe IfEL will be critical in impressing a nuanced set of values onto the next generation of Poly students, molding more effective problem solvers and leaders in starting thoughtful, conscious conversations.“

Honoring

SERVICE in the Community

Community service is fundamental to Poly life. During the last academic year, First Grade hosted Prospect Park Cleanup Day where parents and children raked leaves for composting. Grade 4 participated in the Family Fun Run in support of Women in Need (WIN), a New York City public advocacy campaign for homeless women and children. The Middle School Senate-sponsored Food Drive collected 3,512 items that were donated to two local food pantries. On Grade 9 service days, among the many options students participated in were cooking and serving meals to the elderly and helping to clean up the beach in the Rockaways. In addition to their demanding schedules, many Poly students volunteer more than 100 hours of service. At an Upper School Assembly in May 2019, Elijah Sivin, Director of Service Learning, announced Shania Smith ‘19 as winner of the Anthony DeSantis Community Mayors Scholarship. Shania volunteered her time to serve as an academic mentor to underserved middle schoolers, a tutor in Mandarin, and a food server and volunteer musician at a soup kitchen. An avid environmental advocate, she also played an active role in the Sustainability Club, Green Key, and Poly’s Summer Service for Sustainability Institute. “I come from a family of givers,” Shania explained. “We always found food, money, and time for anyone in need. This desire to help others has been thoroughly instilled in me and it is my belief that giving can make a big difference and that has made me embrace Poly’s service opportunities with zeal and appreciation.” Shania intends to study sustainability at Dartmouth.

VISUAL ARTS

Reimagined

Drawing on her 13 years of education experience at the Museum of Modern Art, Laura Coppola ’95, Charles Diker ’52 and Valerie Diker Visual Arts Chair, launched an innovative class in conjunction with the Brooklyn Museum, helped Advanced Placement Art History (AP Art History) students expand on their classroom experiences, and developed programming for Poly’s first artist residency. In Creating and Curating with the Brooklyn Museum, eighth grade and Upper School students observed traditional painting and then responded to artwork in the Brooklyn Museum’s collection with their own artwork, often using nontraditional materials. A portrait of a woman in a silk brocade dress, Doña María de la Luz Padilla y Gómez de Cervantes by Miguel Cabrera, inspired June Dorsch ’23 to create an homage to “underrepresented people,” such as 19th-century dressmakers, by fashioning panels of a skirt from news articles about the dressmakers’ labor strikes. This and other works were exhibited at Poly’s Spring Art Show. In Coppola’s AP Art History, students studied more than 250 works of art. After a unit on indigenous peoples, the class explored the Art of Native America in The Charles and Valerie Diker Collection at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. (Charles Diker is a member of Poly’s Class of ’52.) Students walked through the galleries in pairs and chose works such as textiles, paintings, or ceramics to present “gallery talks” to classmates. Coppola and her Art and Social Change students broke new ground when Poly launched its first artist residency on campus. In May, Jill Sigman ‘85, a contemporary artist, choreographer, and dancer, constructed The Living Room on the Oval. Using found objects such as discarded wooden pallets, easels, athletic jerseys, and tomato cans, and incorporating edible weeds into the design, Sigman asked us to think about what we consider waste. The focus of her installation dovetailed with Coppola’s Art and Social Change class, which met in The Living Room. Billie Koffman ‘19, Katie Futterman ‘20, and Celia Penny ’20 planned some programming for The Living Room. The installation also came to life as the site of Spanish, French, and Creative Writing classes, a forum on immigration, a Free Bookstore, and a closing performance. “Jill is a social practice artist,” Coppola explained, “and what that basically means is that she incorporates social issues and social engagement into her work. Having classes, discussions, performances, and debates are social actions that are an integral part of The Living Room.”

Passport TO POLY 2019

“It was a successful day in bringing people together to learn and celebrate what makes Poly special.”

Without getting on a plane, Lower School families celebrated Carnaval in Latin America, learned West African drumming, and explored Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago all in one afternoon in March. Families gathered for Passport to Poly, the fifth annual celebration of diversity. “Though there are activities that focus on some families’ cultural heritage, the broader theme of Passport to Poly is the value of the overall diversity at Poly,” said Blake Foote P’27, ‘29, Co-Chair of Passport to Poly. “Therefore, we’ve had more rooms that represent other aspects of diversity such as gay pride, ecological sustainability, social justice, and personal identity.” In the first floor hallway, parents read selections from “My Story,” a collaborative project created by Lower School parents, faculty, and administrators in celebration of Black History Month. Curated by Diane Anderson P’28, the installation celebrated the histories and stories of students of African descent. Parent volunteers set up fun, child-friendly activities throughout the building, encouraging travel between destinations. Children had their “passports” stamped at each destination, while learning more about the cultures that make up our community. “Some rooms had parents and grandparents available to talk about and explain the different displays,” said trustee Michael Correra ‘87. “The event inspired curiosity and made me proud of our Poly community.” “As a new family to Poly the first year Passport to Poly was conceived,” Passport to Poly Co-Chair Susanna Chan P‘29 said, “it was a beginning of a journey that our family would be taking together within the Poly environment, so Passport was an opportunity for us to participate, navigate, and help define that journey on a personal level while being a part of something bigger. The goal and hope for me was to help build a framework with a specific sense of place where kids and adults felt safe and inspired to express themselves, to share with each other something important without fear of judgment. It’s my hope that this event continues to bring the Poly community together, powered by its amazing volunteers, to reflect the values, spirit, and voice of the school as it evolves and changes throughout the years.” Passport to Poly not only showcased global cultures at Lower School, but flavors, too. During the day, parent volunteers hosted “Our Family Table” with international food for all in the dining room. “Nearly 400 people attended and thoroughly enjoyed being together on a cold, early March Sunday,” Foote said. “It was a successful day in bringing people together to learn and celebrate what makes Poly special.”

WINTER ECOLOGY TRIP

Over Spring Break, Poly’s intrepid Middle School science teachers, Debbie Van Ryn and Linda Aponte P’13, led a group of 7th-9th grade students to Yellowstone National Park on an ecology adventure that “Taking these students combined scientific research and service learning. The trip was organized to Yellowstone by the professional expedition company, Ecology Project International (EPI), confirmed for me which has agreements with the National Park Service to work on research that wilderness projects. Students in the Yellowstone Ecology program had to snowshoe into remote areas to accomplish activities such as tracking radio-collared is a transformative bison and elk using telemetry equipment, collecting data on the movement experience for of several big mammal species, and exploring steam vents and geysers. students.” “I was unsure how hard it would be for middle school students to strap on snowshoes and experience Yellowstone in sub-freezing temperatures, but — Debbie Van Ryn they thrived,” Van Ryn said. In sessions at their hostel headquarters, students learned about sustainable wildlife management and analyzed past data sets. Accompanying the snowshoe-clad Poly crew were eco guides from EPI who provided context and meaning to the experiences. “Both during and after the trip, I saw students who were leaders become stronger leaders and quiet students become leaders,” Van Ryn said. “Their excitement about the ABOVE: Middle School students went on a trip got them more interested in science classes prior to leaving and upon scientific exploration of coming back, their enthusiasm for the trip excited other students as well.” Yellowstone National Park Those words rang true to Junie Blaise ‘24, who summed up the experience over Spring Break. in three words: “fun, amazing, and life-changing.” 14 POLY PREP COUNTRY DAY SCHOOL

Summer Internships

S

ince its launch in 2014, Poly’s Internship Program has grown in both offerings and popularity. Every year, Poly places more than 50 students across a wide variety of businesses and non-profit organizations in fields as diverse as law, medicine, finance, publishing, architecture, and the arts. The program helps students learn the basics of what is expected in the workplace and gain professional experience while developing responsibility and autonomy. Many of the opportunities are made possible thanks to the generosity of alumni and parents. Thank you for supporting our students! LEFT:

Debate Streak Stands

P

oly’s 2018-19 debate team continued its reign at the top of regional and national competitions. Seniors Daniel Fernandez ‘19 and Noah Kaye ‘19 ended their high school careers as the number one ranked Public Forum team in the United States, achieving the Public Forum Award of Excellence. This was the second win in as many years for Fernandez, who won this prize in 2018 with Nick Stratigakis ‘18. Fernandez and Kaye earned the 2019 Harvard Invitational title, defeating Bronx High School of Science by unanimous decision. Poly last won the Harvard Invitational in 2016. In the world of debate, the Harvard National High School Invitational Forensics Tournament is the most prestigious of competitions. Thanks to the generosity of Elena Goyanes and Everado Goyanes ‘61, debate team training and the team’s record of excellence continue to flourish. “Debate at Poly Prep has transformed my life... I’m so thankful for the opportunities that Poly has provided to me to pursue my passion for debate. Debate has opened so many doors for me, changed the way I think about the world, and has given me a sense of purpose,” said Daniel Fernandez ‘19. “I will be forever grateful for all of the support I’ve received from the Poly administration, faculty, debate coaches, and debate teammates.”

AP Computer Science Principles & Female Diversity Award

P

oly celebrated the great news that we were recognized with a College Board Female Diversity Award for 2018. Our Advanced Placement Computer Science Principles (AP CSP) class was among only 4% of all schools offering this course worldwide to achieve over 50% female student representation. “At the time of the award this year (2018–2019 school year), my roster was 8 girls in a class of 14,” said teacher Jean Belford P’24. Poly was excited to be part of the inaugural program when the College Board introduced AP CSP in 2016. Poly saw the potential in expanding the tech curriculum and added this course to the computer science offerings, giving more opportunity for Advanced Placement options. “This course is for students who do want to learn to code, but for whatever reason(s) have not previously had the exposure/experience to computer science.” Belford said. “The curriculum prepares the students to understand programming and actually code a fully functioning program as part of the requirements/submissions to the Board. Historically, the students have programmed apps in Javascript.” This honor underscores the amazing efforts of Poly and teacher Belford in such a short time. “This exciting and important award recognizes Poly’s commitment to female diversity, as well as the girls’ interest and enthusiasm for computer science,” explained Belford.

(More Than One) Tree Grows in Brooklyn

S

ince it opened its doors in 1917, Poly’s 25-acre Dyker Heights campus has remained a verdant jewel in Brooklyn. Generations of students have thrived in its setting, using it for scientific studies, artistic endeavors, athletic competitions, community celebrations, and more. Annual Giving is an essential resource to support the care and maintenance of our beautiful grounds. This spring, inspired by the serenity of the lush landscape, Graham and Boin Arader gifted a collection of conifers and other flora to enhance our grounds. With the addition of 74 trees, Cypress Pines and Purple Beeches, as well as 4,400 hostas (to help with water drainage), our students will continue to enjoy our bucolic campus for generations to come.

Back on Campus

O

n a cool evening in March 2019, the Poly community gathered in the Richard Perry Theatre for a screening of On The Basis of Sex, a biopic about Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, as part of the Context speaker series. The film was produced by alumnus Robert Cort ‘64, who returned to campus that day to talk to students. Following the film, Cort was joined on stage by another esteemed guest, New York State Solicitor General Barbara Underwood P’04 and new Director of Arts Outreach Robert Aberlin ‘62, P’00, ‘03. The lively panel discussion was moderated by Maggie Moslander, Poly’s Constitutional Law teacher. Underwood, who recently made history as the first woman to serve as Attorney General of New York, engaged the audience with stories about her life and career — she clerked for Supreme Court Associate Justice Thurgood Marshall from 1971 to 1972. For Cort, sharing his film with the Poly community was the culmination of a day visiting with students in classrooms and the staff of The Polygon, where he served as an editor. He connected with student Sofia Russo ‘19 over a mutual love of storytelling and celebrating one’s own authentic voice. “You have to stick with your gut about your creations,” he advised Russo. “If you change them in a way you think will make other people like them more, you lose what makes your work special to you.” Designed to inspire, inform, and foster communication, the speaker series, Context, was the brainchild of Michal Hershkovitz P’16, ‘18, now Assistant Head of School, Academics. The series launched in 2018.

PARTY BOOK So glad that we were able to participate in the series. It is such a welcome remix to the traditional school fundraising gala strategy. MINYA OH P’33

Lipstick party was a huge success— very social and chatty. We can sell more tix next year! :) JENNIFER POWERS P’26,’28

It was great fun to be a Party Book pioneer! I do think this approach to fundraising is a fresh one. MEL ANIE WELLS P’21

I really like the smaller parties where you can have real conversations with other Poly parents. M ARGARET SCHILLING P’22,‘24

We had an awesome time and had the opportunity to meet new people.

It went late so I’ll take that as a success!

INDHIR A ARRINGTON P’29,’31

PARTY BOOK

L

ed by Poly parents, Poly Prep’s newest fundraiser— & friendraiser—launched in January 2019. Party Book featured a wide array of events created by our Poly community for our community. Parents hosted or sponsored 66 parties and a total of 1,371 tickets were purchased to attend these events. The parties successfully brought together families & faculty across every division. Each unique party was an amazing way for our diverse community to laugh, learn, mingle, meet new friends, have fun, & support Poly while raising over $116,000. Thank you to all our Party Book hosts & attendees for partying with us!
