Dear Parents, As sure as winter turns to spring, and spring to summer, so too does the 25-acre Poly Prep campus transform at the conclusion of the academic year. Each June, for as long as I can remember, our campus becomes both a playground for the body, and a learning ground for the mind. Consistent with Poly’s mission, our Summer Programs are filled with choices rich in pursuits to grow the mind, body, and character of our student body—your children. Faculty, coaches, and industry professionals, all of who have achieved high honors and accolades in their respective fields, run our activities and courses. Our unique and extraordinary variety of programs and camps includes day camp, academics, athletics, and performing arts in small, supportive, and nurturing environments that engage students in a setting very different from that which they experience during the school year. It is relaxed and safe. Yet challenging and fun. Programs provide ample opportunities for children to flourish and to sharpen their skills in endeavors they already know and love. They can even choose to pursue new interests, all in state-of-the-art facilities that we continually grow and expand. We hope you will consider joining us this summer. We promise it will be an experience your child will not soon forget, and one for which you will be eternally grateful.

POLY PREP SUMMER PROGRAMS 2014

Three open houses for all programs take place on:

Sunday, January 26, 2014 9am – noon *changed from 1/12/14 Saturday, February 8, 2014 9am – noon Saturday, March 1, 2014 9am – noon Please join us, meet our staff, and tour our campus. Children welcome, no RSVP necessary

Steven Andersen ’71, P’13, ’22 Associate Head of School for Advancement and Operations

Dear Parents, As I write you late afternoon in December, the sun has set and a blanket of snow covers the grounds at Poly Prep. My thoughts, however, are on long, warm, and sunny summer days when our campus is alive with the vibrant sounds and sights of engaged and smiling children. Are you as excited as we are about the start of Poly Prep’s 2014 Summer Programs? Every summer, campers and students tell us how much they appreciated their opportunities to make new friends, relate to kind adults, and master a talent or skill. This year, we have designed a summer for your child to remember. It begins in June and runs for 10 full weeks. Whether it is designing a set in Performing Arts camp, learning to catch a ball on the lacrosse field, animating a stop-motion movie in Summer Experience, or developing swim strokes in one of our pools, our caring and energetic team of counselors will be there to encourage your child’s development of friendships, confidence, decision making and respect. Most importantly, our counselors will ensure that each day your child comes home with a smile that is wider than the day is long. We cannot wait to make a positive difference for you and your child this summer. We look forward to seeing you soon! Carrie Quigley

summer academic programs Summer Academic Programs For boys and girls entering grades 3-11 July 7-August 1 Between 9:00 AM–12:30 PM

Summer learning at Poly Prep gives your child the chance to leap ahead! We offer 3 programs: SUMMER STARS: Individualized academic enrichment program for students entering grades 3–8 TEST PREP PROGRAM: Group instruction to prepare students for the SAT, PSAT, and ISEE UPPER SCHOOL CLASSES: Subject area courses targeted to students entering grades 9–12

SUMMER STARS Academic Enrichment Programs

Summer learning can help strengthen your child’s fall success. Whether your child is at the top of his or her academic game or has room to improve, Poly Prep’s Summer Stars Academic Clubs prepare students for their best school year ever. Summer Stars is designed for students entering grades 3–8. It offers academic skill-building in reading/writing and math. Students receive small group instruction (4:1) on personalized curriculum in a casual, yet engaging setting that makes learning fun. Summer Stars programs are tailored to each student following the teacher’s analysis of diagnostic assessments. The skills addressed in the Summer Stars Clubs will help students in school and on standardized tests.

Reading/Writing Club

Can I combine Summer Stars Program with Summer Experience Day Camp? Sure! Summer Stars and Summer Experience together provide a wonderfully enriching opportunity to bolster student confidence while having fun. For students who enroll only in Reading/Writing Club, the day begins in class at 9:00 AM. Camp begins at 10:30 AM. Math Club enrollees begin the day in camp and leave between 10:30 AM–11:30 AM, at which time they are returned to their camp group. Students enrolled in both Reading/Writing and Math Club will begin their camp day at 11:30 AM.

Times: 9:00 AM–10:30 AM Dates: July 7–August 1 Tuition: $1,300

If students combine these programs, will they miss any camp? Students enrolled in both programs will miss parts of the camp day that cannot be made up. We are unable to reschedule camp activities that are missed during class time, however, we do ensure that Summer Stars have their own unique and special events to look forward to in addition to their regular camp events.

The Summer Stars Reading/Writing Club gives each younger student an opportunity publish a nonfiction “expert book” while each older student produces a well-crafted literary essay. At age-appropriate levels, students learn to ask questions while reading, take notes, organize and synthesize information, analyze quotes, develop vocabulary, improve fluency and determine author’s purpose. Instruction is collaborative and students benefit from small group discussions and lessons while boosting their confidence for the school year ahead.

Math Club

Summer Stars Math Club improves conceptual math knowledge as well as computational and problem-solving skills for students. Teachers use the results of assessment tests to customize curriculum to each student. This program is a perfect opportunity to review math from the previous school year and to preview concepts for the upcoming year. Students become mathmatically self-reliant as they master the skills required for independent success. Times: 10:30 AM–11:30 AM Dates: July 7–August 1 Tuition: $900

ENROLLMENT GUIDELINES: Application Class size is limited in all Summer Academic Programs to maintain low teacher-student ratios. Registration is on a first-come, firstserved basis. Summer Stars: After completing registration, parents of Summer Star registrants will be contacted in the spring to arrange a date for their child’s diagnostic evaluation. Test Prep: You will receive an email after registration requesting submission of your child’s most recent SAT/PSAT scores. Upper School Classes: Open to students entering grades 9–12. Students not enrolled at Poly Prep must submit a copy of his or her current school transcript with registration form. Students taking courses for credit must indicate that on their registration forms.

Is there a discount if students do both? If students register for both the Summer Experience Day Camp and the Summer Stars Academic Enrichment Program, the tuition for any course in Summer Stars is half-price, provided they are accepted into the day camp. Due to attendence requirements, students enrolled in the Performing Arts Camp are unable to participate in the Summer Stars Program.

Schedule The four-week session runs from July 7– August 1. All classes take place between 9:00 AM–12:30 PM, with specific times noted in each course description.

Payment Payment is due upon registration. No refunds will be issued after the first day of class. There will be no fee reductions for absence, late arrival, late registration, withdrawal, or dismissal.

Attendance Policy Consistent attendance leads to student success. Students are expected to attend every class during the Summer Academic Program. For Upper School classes, a student who misses more than one class risks not receiving credit for the course in which he or she is enrolled.

Lunch and Bus Service We are unable to provide lunch or bus service to students enrolled solely in Summer Academics. We do offer access to soft drink and vending machines.

Evaluation Written evaluations of progress are mailed home for both Upper School and Summer Stars’ students. Upper School class students will receive grades. 4

summer academic programs TEST PREP PROGRAM Summer is a perfect time for students to prepare for fall/winter standardized tests. These courses will help them develop a confident and healthy attitude toward the PSAT, SAT, or ISEE with the help of a Poly Prep/CATES Tutoring Summer Intensive Test Prep Program. By preparing for these critically important exams during summer mornings when they are more relaxed, students focus effectively on techniques and strategies to master test content.

SAT and PSAT Preparation

SAT and PSAT prep courses are designed for rising juniors and seniors. Students take a real SAT or PSAT on day one of the program, then CATES Tutors analyze the results. The remaining class time in this 50-hour on-site test prep program is spent focusing on areas in need of improvement. Students work in small groups with qualified CATES instructors to prepare for the Critical Reading, Writing, and Math sections of the exam. They will take four full-length practice exams over the course of the program. Supportive instructors

manage progress and performance to ensure the greatest chance of achieving target scores. Nearly 50% of last summer’s students increased their scores by over 200 points. Consistent attendance is essential to success. Times: 9:30 AM–12:30 PM Dates: July 7–July 31 Tuition: $2,075

ISEE Preparation

If your child is applying to an independent school such as Poly Prep for Grades 5 or 6 next year they must take the Lower Level Independent School Entrance Exam (ISEE). To help him or her prepare, Poly Prep/ CATES Tutoring offers this one-week, 10-hour introductory course for those entering Grades 4 and 5 in September 2014. Small-group instruction familiarizes students with the exam and helps build confidence. This is offered only at Poly Prep’s Lower School in Park Slope. Times: 9:30 AM–11:30 AM Dates: August 4–8 Tuition: $775

Algebra I

A basic review of Algebra I will help students master skills and concepts before entering geometry. Students work to understand the following topics: solving one-variable linear equations and inequalities, absolute value, graphing two-variable linear equations and inequalities, solving linear systems of equations and inequalities, simplifying and factoring polynomial expressions, simplifying radical expressions, and solving quadratic equations using a variety of methods. The course employs a variety of educational technologies, including interactive SmartBoard lessons and the TI-83/84 graphing calculator.

UPPER SC H OOL CLASSES

Geometry

If the best school year ever is your child’s goal, look no further than a summer class at Poly Prep with a veteran teacher who will inspire excellence. These classes are targeted at students entering Grades 9 through 12 who would like to prepare for the upcoming school year or make up a course for credit. All classes run for 90 minutes between 9:30 AM–12:30 PM (exact class times to be determined in June). Dates: July 7-July 31 Tuition: $1,225

This course will reinforce the understanding of geometry skills and concepts for students entering Algebra II. Students work to grasp the following topics: angle relationships, slope, investigating properties of triangles and the entire quadrilateral family, proving triangles congruent, similar figures, the Pythagorean Theorem, special right triangles, trigonometry, circles (measuring angles, arcs, tangents, secants, and special segments), and area of polygons and composite figures. This discovery-based course explores these topics with the use and manipulation of real-world data and ideas.

Critical Reading & Writing

Algebra II

Students learn the reading and analytical skills necessary for mastering a wide variety of subjects, including history, English, science, and math. Students improve critical reading, writing, and research skills and practice time management, organization, note-taking procedures, and test preparation. This course is an enrichment opportunity for students who want to develop more sophisticated skills. It also offers a review for credit in either history or English.

In Algebra II, students solidify their grasp of skills and concepts before entering more advanced math courses. They will master the following topics: functions (including linear, quadratic, cubic, trigonometric, rational, exponential, and logarithmic) and the rules for sketching, translating, reflecting, and applying them; systems for understanding linear equations, complex numbers, the binomial theorem, and inequalities; and verbal problems using real-world data, and digital applications. 5

Spanish I

A skill booster before advancing to Spanish II, this course is designed for students who have completed Spanish I. The major goals of this course include mastery of vocabulary for basic conversations, conjugations of both common and irregular verbs, and pronunciation by engaging in frequent dialogues and readings. Students master basic writing and take the first steps toward functioning as a true Spanish speaker.

Spanish II

Spanish II prepares students for the demands of Spanish III. This course is geared toward students who have completed Spanish II, but would like to master all principal concepts of syntax and grammar. Students will enrich vocabulary and improve Spanish reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills.

Spanish III

This course offers a heavy review of Spanish grammar, including the subjunctive mood. Instruction is geared toward students who have completed Spanish III, but need additional instruction to analyze the course’s complex concepts. It allows students to further develop oral and listening skills through video and audio sources.

A learning camp that fosters a sense of community where youth feel safe, included, engaged, and connected. It is an experience that creates lasting friendships and lifelong memories.

Our Mission Poly Prep’s Summer Experience Day Camp offers children a safe environment to build friendships, explore new interests, master skills, and develop confidence. In line with Poly’s mission, our program values diversity, imagination, intellectual growth, and character development. Bringing Camp to Life Skilled counselors and program specialists are the backbone of Summer Experience at Poly Prep. Michael Junsch ’71, P’94, ’95, a Poly faculty member and 30-year veteran of camp leadership, guides the program. He is joined by a team of skilled educators and coaches, and counselors chosen for their maturity, compassion, energy, and proven experience with children. They work with campers in small groups leading age-appropriate activities that meet varied physical, social, emotional, and intellectual needs. They act as role models, encouraging campers to act in a kind and responsible manner and challenging them to develop

their individual strengths each day. They are zany and fun, and energize campers as they make new friends, try new things, and blossom into confident youngsters. Many counselors are former campers and return year-after-year to create a meaningful and unique Summer Experience. How Children Grow Campers are divided into five age divisions, allowing them to participate in developmentally appropriate programs while also being part of a larger camp community. Each division is made up of multiple camp groups who travel and play together through much of the day and join each other for division-wide events. Daily programs support the growth of self-esteem, independence, and skills in friendship, communication, decision-making, and leadership. We Build in Fun, Too You may find intermediate campers walking on stilts or nursery-division campers hiding under a billowing parachute. Senior 6

campers might be challenged by a popsicle stick bridge-building project, while junior campers are hunting for rings during a scavenger hunt in the pool. Each division is distinct in how it meets the age-appropriate needs of its campers. However, all Summer Experience campers experience all this: • • • • • • • • • • • • •

performing arts

Performing Arts Camp

For students entering Grades 4–9 in September 2014 Dates: June 30–August 1 Times: Full day (8:45 AM–3:30 PM) Cost: $2,175

Let your child join talented and experienced teaching artists and nearly 100 other boys and girls to develop and perform a piece of original musical theater. This comprehensive five-week program will develop students’ creativity by adapting a story for the stage. Students will be able to: • Create their own characters and dialogue • Write lyrics and compose their own songs • Structure a dramatic progression • Choreograph dance and movement • Design costumes and sets • Train as performers and set technicians Under the guidance of teachers, students will: • Learn to read music • Learn to play an orchestral instrument • Learn stage combat and acrobatics • Strengthen vocal skills, including articulation and vocal production • Improve hand-eye coordination • Strengthen concentration skills

Kinesthetic learners flourish in the camp, as texts and ideas are directly connected with movement. Abstract thinkers also benefit as they learn to physically express ideas and emotions. The collaborative structure of Performing Arts Camp fosters improved communication skills, increased selfconfidence, a feeling of belonging, and the opportunity for creative self-expression. When possible, students are grouped together according to years of training. Our oldest campers perform in a scripted musical from the Broadway canon and follow a different five-week progression, focusing intensively to build and perfect performance techniques rather than create new material. They also participate in the instrumental program and play in the gala concert at the end of the five weeks, whether or not they have had previous musical experience. Group instruction is provided on the following instruments: • Woodwinds: flute, clarinet, and alto and tenor saxophone • Brass: trumpet and trombone • Percussion: drum set and bells • Strings: violin, viola, and cello Our excellent facilities include: • Air-conditioned performing arts center • Richard Perry Theatre • Dance studio 10

• Tennis courts* • Swimming pools* • Outdoor fields and space* *The program includes daily outdoor recreation.

Registration: This unique and popular five-week camp fills quickly! Students are registered on a firstcome, first-served basis. Note: Applicants entering Grades 8 or 9, applying for the first time, must have performing arts experience and should arrange an interview with the director before enrolling. Fee: $2,175 (includes a rental fee for instruments—provided by Poly Prep—method books and sheet music.) Deposit: $500 (refundable until April 15) or payment in full is due with application. Applications received after May 14 must include full payment. If space is available, applications may be submitted until June 1. Refunds will not be issued after the first day of camp. There is no fee reduction for absence, late arrival, late registration, withdrawal, or dismissal. Because Performing Arts Camp is a cumulative instructional program that requires consistent attendance, children may not enroll in the Summer Academic Program or plan for extended absences during this five-week camp.

Led by Kevin Dolan, veteran aquatics director at Poly Summer Program, and a team of highly qualified instructors, our swim program teaches swimming skills and fosters comfort and confidence in the water. Ages 2-5: Our Tuesday/Thursday program is designed for children ranging from 2-5 years of age. Using Poly’s two newly constructed teaching pools which provide large shallow areas of water, our instructors encourage children to develop the basic steps required to learn to swim. Each child must be accompanied by a parent/ guardian who is willing to participate in the lesson. Only one child per adult will be allowed in the pool. Ages 6-16: Our Monday/Wednesday program provides personalized swimming instruction that helps each swimmer meet his or her potential. On the first day, each swimmer’s ability is reviewed. Instructors will then place children in small groups according to swimming ability and comfort in the water. Swimming skills and strokes will be taught throughout the lessons.
