A rare and sometimes coveted pattern in Pomeranian coats is known as ‘Wolf Sable’. Dogs dominant at the Agouti locus for the (aw) allele will express a wolf sable phenotype. This pattern is perhaps the oldest among animals. It is still present today in wolves and coyotes in the wild and several breeds of dogs as well as some rabbits and other rodents. A recent study (1) found that the allele is present in more than 18 breeds of dogs including: Eurasier, Border Collie, German Shepherd Dog, Dachshund, Golden Retriever, Vizsla, German Shorthaired Pointer, German Wirehaired Pointer, Brittany Spaniel, Akita, Shar Pei, Keeshond, Alaskan Malamute, Norwegian Elkhound, Siberian Husky, Swedish Vallhund, Standard Schnauzer, and Miniature Schnauzer.

Some of those breeds: Golden Retriever, Vizsla, German Shorthaired Pointer, German Wirehaired Pointer, Brittany Spaniel also have the (Kb) allele at the K locus which masks the presence of (aw). So those breeds can carry the (aw) allele, but don't express it. The remaining breeds, however, can express the wolf sable phenotype when the (aw) allele is present. This list of breeds is not all inclusive. There are likely more breeds out there that were not included in this study. Due to testing availability at Canadian and American labs, the Pomeranian has more recently proven to carry the (aw) allele. It should be noted that terms used vary between the breeds. Pomeranians with an (aw) dominant genotype, are known as ‘wolf sables,’ whereas the Dachshund is ‘wild boar’. Standard Schnauzers are ‘salt and pepper’ and Shar Peis are known as ‘patterned sables’. These dogs are all dominant for (aw) at Agouti but they have different names. Among the breeds that have the (aw) allele and the resultant wolf sable pattern, the colors involved can also vary. It can produce a banding pattern to the hair of "black-cream-black", such as one would expect in a Keeshond or Siberian Husky, or "black-red-black", such is often present in German Shepherd Dogs or Dachshunds. Some speculate that other colour combinations are possible. It should be noted that the "wolf sable" pattern has more to do with the banding pattern than with a specific pigment shade. However banded hairs do occasionally show up on (ay) fawn/sable dogs as well, with some (ay) dogs appearing very similar to their (aw) counterparts. So the mere presence of a banded hair cannot guarantee an (aw) genotype. Some say that the ‘spectacle outline’ around the eyes and even the ‘grey/silver’ 8

colour are also visual cues but this may not be exclusive to (aw) dogs. This is the problem. Many purported ‘wolf sable’ Pomeranians have proven through genetic testing to be regular (ay) orange or cream sables. As long as breeders cannot visually identify the (aw) true wolf sable, we may be at risk of losing the pattern from our breed. As the (ay) red/orange/cream sable allele is dominant to the (aw) wolf sable allele (2), it may be selected for in error thus dominating the gene pool. Breeders today are fortunate in that they have inexpensive DNA tools which can identify many patterns present in our dogs. By testing, breeders can eliminate the need for time consuming and sometimes costly test breedings and the unfortunate problem of misrepresenting a dog’s colour/pattern in the official pedigree and to buyers. A simple buccal mouth swab test at one of the commercial labs such as Healthgene (www.healthgene.com, Toronto, ON) can save the breeder time, money and the embarrassment of selling a wolf sable that isn’t truly a wolf sable. The test offered by HealthGene is a direct modification of what was used in the study (1). References: 1. Brian ...and our love affair begins 26/11/2002 - 06/07/2013 Where do I begin? Brian has taught me so much in the time I got to spend with him. He came into my life in August of 2008 and it was that phone call that would forever change me in a way I never thought possible. It was on that day that I met the love of my life, my soul mate, my wolf sable Dochlaggie boy called “Brian”. That phone call came from my sister asking me to come to her place after work as she had a surprise for me. This surprise was my Brian and life would not be the same as I knew it.
Brian was by no means any ordinary boy, he was that very special one. Little did I know how much he would truly impact my life. Other than having to work I would spend every minute of the day with him which would result in such a strong bond. My attitude was that if Brian wasn’t welcome somewhere, anywhere, then I wasn’t either. We done absolutely everything together. He was the ray of light in my life, even in the worst of times he was always there for me unconditionally. He wasn’t here for a long time, 10 years 7 months and 10 days to be exact but in that short time he had an impact on everyone who met him. He kidnapped my heart and he will forever be in my thoughts. I will always cherish the special memories we shared over the years. Here is an insight to some of my beautiful boys adventures through the eyes of Brian himself...

How I became a Superstar I figure I will start on explaining on one of the reasons I came to fame. Although I was always destined for super stardom from a young age, it wasn’t till back in May 2012 when I attended the annual RSPCA million Paws Walk in South Perth with my posse of followers that I realised I had hit the “BIG TIME”. It wasn’t quite the bright lights of Hollywood or a red carpet event but it was the start of my love affair with the camera. Anyway, I had trained a lot for the walk. I even shaved my whole body to reduce wind resistance. Just kidding, there is no way I would sacrifice my good looks for performance. When the walk actually started I was surprised at the amount of people (4 legged and 2) that were overtaking us. Even in my pimped out beast wagon we weren’t keeping up but then out of nowhere popped up a news man who started asking mum all sorts of questions about me. The camera came out and I thought I had better start flexing just in case this is an important photo. It was a couple of days later that I was informed that I had made the news. It was the unveiling of this picture that made me realise that this was where I belonged. It wasn’t only the animal fund raisers that I liked to support. I often volunteered to lend my stomach to local fundraisers too. Mum would take me driving on a Sunday so we could go get our charity sausage from the local hardware stores - although I was well aware of the calorie content, I thought on such occasions I could forfeit my diet for one day of the week to help those in need.

Bruthas from other Muthas It would have been June of 2010 when I had my first interaction with my new brother Snoop aka Diggies. Initially I was not very impressed as I had been an only child for such a long time (I don’t know what sort of “man flu” mum was suffering from when she had this brilliant idea). It wasn’t all bad though, as the weeks rolled into months he was always thrilled to be involved in my daily activities. The little guy really looked up to me. We would often go to the beach or park where we enjoyed a little man-to-man talk. Digs would often tell me that he wanted to grow up to be a superstar just like me. In my infinite astuteness, I would tell him that the path to his own fame might be a little different to mine but he could ride my coat tails for part of the way. I explained to Snoop that unfortunately he did not inherit my poster boy good looks, athleticism, or enviable physique and these traits were what paved my road to stardom. Don’t get me wrong Snoop has this “cuddly cute” look going for him whilst I consider myself “dapper sexy”. He was a little disappointed at first, but he soon realised it is hard work being ridiculously good looking and he had to earn his dues to work up the ranks. We all know at the end of the day, you cant polish a turd.
I was a good brother though and Snoop was lucky to have me for advice. From fame to flexing right down to learning how to deal with all the paparazzi attention. I was many things to Digs, including his mentor, role-model and sexy lady consultant. I taught him everything I knew. He became my right-hand man, my wingman, the goose to my maverick and we made a good team. But that is what big brothers are for.

Holidays & Adventures Over the years mum had taken me to plenty travel destinations. One of the better ones was going over to watch the Rip Curl Pro at Bells Beach. Being a sexy hard core man unit that I was, I did not care for the surfing I was more interested in picking up the ladies. I would specifically ask for a first class seat on the plane and start packing my suitcase in anticipation. Items of importance included my sunglasses, life jacket, a set of dumbbells - in case I needed to pump some iron before heading to the beach, my socks, a tee for every day I was away (you can not be spotted more than once in the same outfit) and of course my mankini. As soon as we got to our destination I was always quick to break out the shades, not wanting to waste a minute of babe-appeal time. They were the perfect accessory to compliment my rugged, ripped and often sand dusted body. We didn’t always catch a plane to have adventures, sometimes we would enjoy chinos for breakfast accompanied by dippy doo eggs with bread soldiers followed by strolls on the beach or just walk the foreshores. It could be anywhere from the Parklands at the famous Kings Park in Perth to the beautiful beaches of Cottesloe. Sometimes my fondest memories were of a babe less beach, sitting on my little chair, with the sea breeze in my ears, the sunshine in my face and the sand in my paws. Mum was always trying to get me to explore my wild side and would often take me to events such as the Thong Challenge for Australia Day (don’t be confused about the title of this event, I too thought that was an invitation to wear a leopard print piece but little did I know it involved a giant inflatable thong to break an aussie record) or she would strap on my life jacket and take me kayaking down on the Swan River...for some reason a life jacket just doesn’t cut it as being very cool and she even had me dabble in a bit of surfing, to which I might add was ok until I got wet. I was more of the observer type and was happy watching mum be happy, so quite often she would leave me set up in my little beach tent being chief security of the towels, water bowl and car keys while she supervised Snoop on the shorelines.

Sexytime Now, I may have appeared to be an irresistable hunk of meat to the ladies, but a lot of preparation went into being ridiculously good looking and mum would often spring this on me when I was least expecting it...like when I was snoozing. It would start with the soft whisper of the word “bath” to which my eyes would pop open and the rigamortis would set in. She would often take the opportunity whilst I was neck deep in bubbles to try convince me that she has my best interests at heart and that I would emit a sweet aroma whilst leading my expeditions, hence help me in my quest to pick up the ladies. Her reasoning seemed viable so I was keen to let her get on with the day spa sessions. Now sleeping was an extremely important day-to-day activity for me to undertake, in fact I became an expert at it. It became a vital part in keeping me looking beautiful and after a day full of snoozing I was revitalised enough to eat my dinner (I never skipped a meal - its all about weighing a healthy amount) and go for my night time strolls. As you could all appreciate, a super star of my calibre does not do walking, I simply “lead expeditions” and mum was always on the google looking for the next contraption that would make my life easier (just as it should be). It was at this point that my nan suggested a pram! My sheer reaction to this was probably much like yours and that was WTH?! Knowing mum would not want me experiencing “tool” like feelings whilst out and about, I left it in her very capable hands of choosing a sleek, bad ass piece of equipment that I would be proud to call my own...and she did not fail me. My trike became my pimp wagon, my second set of legs and I became quite a chick magnet at that. I’m not going to lie though, the ferrari I kept asking for would have been nice.

Costumes My first experience with an “outfit” would have been only a few months after arriving in Perth. As I said before, I do not wear costumes, I wear “outfits” and the life saver was the first of many. What I didn’t anticipate though, was how many I would end up with. But that was ok, it meant I was able to brush up on my regal pose and perfect my blue steel. Just a tip...whether your a model, a party hound or just want to impress the babes, this is the winning pose to polish. You can never have enough fashionable outfits and I had a wardrobe worthy of my celebrity status.
Party pom On November 26th last year, I reached a milestone birthday and mum had decided what better way to celebrate such an achievement of my double digits she had organised a special day just for me. If you were to ask me if I felt older, I would have said no. I may not have as much hair on my back as I did when I was a puppy, but I see it as becoming more “distinguished” and nothing that a comb over wouldn’t fix. My day involved waking up late, opening presents, eating cake, a roast dinner and the most important of all, the day was spent with my mum, nan and little bro which is all a dog like me needs.
If Brian could have written a blog, I’m sure it would be something like this. Brian came into my life as an older dog, and after a while he started to show his age. It is only now, looking back at videos and photos I have of him, that I could see the deterioration in his health. Not only did his physical appearance have tell tale signs, his legs started to fail him and the small seizures he was suffering were happening more frequently. I wouldn’t have traded him for the world though, I just wanted to help make him better. At first I took him to see an acupuncturist/physiotherapist hoping it would help him with his legs. It was on professional advice that lead me to see a neurologist who was regarded the best in Perth. I was advised to have a MRI and CT scan done on him to make sure he had no collapsed discs in his neck which could be restricting his walking ability.

When the tests came back negative he was admitted to have a Myleogram done. If I had known what I know now, I would have never subjected his little body to such things this last test would see him temporarily paralysed for 3 weeks and he was solely dependant on me to help him with his daily activities. I felt so guilty seeing him like this. The guilt turned to frustration and anger. I felt like the doctors and specialists up until now had treated him like a lab rat in their science experiments. I couldn’t get any answers without him getting poked with needles so I decided that after that last test there would be no more. Brian was a little trooper, he showed show much strength and courage. Not once did he complain about having to take his meds or let me know when he was hurting, he just took it on the chin. You are never ready for a loss, but a sudden loss hits so very hard. I still ask myself a question to this day...to go quickly and be unprepared or to know its coming but there will be pain and suffering? Brian always put me before himself and I still believe that he made the decision to cross over so I wouldn’t have to.
It was on 6th July around 8.30am when my world as I knew it was about to stop rotating. Everything was like any other day when we woke up, just the way I liked it, with a beaming fluffy face looking at me. Brian started straining, almost like he needed to go to the toilet, so I carried him outside thinking this was what he was wanting. After staying outside with him for a few minutes and realising he didn’t need to go I brought him back inside and put him on my bed. I wish I could have read the signs earlier, I know Digs knew something wasn’t right. I had that gut feeling that this wasn’t good and raced him into the car. I sped him down to his doctors and as I was driving I held his head in my hand and kept asking him to hold on as we were nearly there. Just before I got to the clinic he had a seizure. I cradled his limp body and raced him inside. The nurses rushed him out back where he was given a shot of adrenalin. I was standing in that waiting area thinking the worst but hoping for the best. I couldn’t stop shaking. It would have to have been the longest wait of my life.

Brian’s doctor appeared, I think she must have seen the look of hope on my face through all the tears but her face told another story. I walked through the the doors to the theatre and wasn’t quite prepared for what I was about to see. I nearly collapsed, every last breathe had been sucked out of me. There lying on the table was my boy...lifeless. His tiny body couldn’t continue and his little heart of gold had stopped beating. I was told later that the signs Brian was showing prior was his body shutting down, normally when this happens you have approximately half an hour. I miss the aroma of his fur when we spooned each other on the couch. I miss his blow offs in bed after consuming a few too many chicken sticks, or the snoring that followed. I was always more relaxed when I could hear the soothing sound of Brian snoring. I miss those little marble eyes following me around the kitchen as I prepared his night time meals. I miss his unconditional love, his cheeky grin and his very vocal demands when he wanted his water bowl, a toilet break, his dinner or a lollie. I miss that wagging bum when I would walk through the door from work. I think what I should say is I miss everything that was Brian and I would give up everything to have him back again. Brian was in a class of his own, he was one of a kind and with every kiss and every hug, he made me fall deeper in love. I didn’t need anything but him, he was my all. The world was a better place for having Brian in it and it became a lot less fluffy when the angels gave him his wings. Brian may not have made the big lights of Hollywood but he will always and forever be my little celebrity, my superstar, my knight in shining armor as I will be forever thankful to him for letting me be a part of his life. I sometimes pity people who have never experienced the love of a dog. To share the bond between two souls, one with hands the other with paws. “I am sometimes reminded that what others say is wrong, for as long as air breathes through me there will always be our mighty bond. When I’m called home and the gates are opened wide, our bond will deepen ten fold as we both walk through side by side. You see, I am the lucky one as I’ve been truly blessed, for someday we’ll walk together as eternal silhouettes.” Till we find each other again, wait for me my baby boy.

Or for a better title – How to do it my way! I know what you are supposed to do, I just have not yet managed to get my dogs to listen to me. However, they know what to do and will perform beautifully as long as I am not telling them to do anything. GO FIGURE! Regardless, the fun is in the interaction and it really does not matter that they don’t listen to me. They tease me and I tease them. We are really enjoying each other’s company. How do you feel when you are sitting around the house and have nothing to do. Everyone is reading or watching television and not paying a bit of attention to you. You just finished a book and are not quite ready to start a new one, the crap on television is not to your liking, you can’t watch a movie because someone else is watching the TV. You can’t go swimming because you can’t swim and need to go with someone who can..and so on and so on. You feel bored. Your dog feels the same stuff. A dog with nothing to do, no training to do anything, no ambition, no desire, is not a dog, it is paramount to a stuffed toy. Dogs need to learn stuff, they like to be challenged, and they love the praise and attention when they master a new trick or deed. Guess what, you adopted him, so it is your responsibility to give his life some meaning. Get your lead out, your clicker, your treats, your training book or whatever it takes and get busy, The experts are going to tell you that a dog likes to show off and if he is working out on some sort of training, he is burning a lot of excess energy, he is learning to pay attention to you and respect you, and you are teaching him alternate training instead of barking and digging or jumping up on people. The problem is - in a nutshell – you have to be smarter than the dog to teach him anything. You must be patient, you must repeat actions using the same process so he learns each step – one step at a time. You must make training sessions fun and long enough to succeed in a goal but short enough that your dog will remain focused, you master one deed at a time, go to the new one, but still have a refresher course on the one he just learned. You use positive reinforcement with lots of good dogs and smart dog comments and mix that with scratching his ears or belly. When he fails, you failed! Before you criticize him or make any harsh comments, stop, go in the house, sit in front of a mirror and reprimand the person responsible for the errors of his way. Get your tools of the trade ready and start. You tools in this case is you, the dog, and treats or a clicker or a lead or whatever you want it to be. good deed from the dog immediately with a click. It just is a quick way of drawing his attention that he done good!!! Now he gets a treat or a pat on the head to top it off. Treats are what they call the primary reinforcement. That treat is a reward that dogs will do just about anything to earn. So it becomes very useful when training for proper behavior. If you start using a treat – be consistent. I start with something they do naturally but not on command. My dogs like to twirl when you talk to them. So I talk, they twirl, I click and say good twirl girl, and give them a treat. No twirl, no treat or click. In no time at all they learn how to do something that they already know how to do. But now they do it to hear praise or get a treat. (I am stingy with treats and use a lot of praise instead). Now I have 18 dogs that twirl all day long! All I say anymore is good girl or good twirl or great dog. I have not yet figured out how to make them unwind. Amos lies down and crosses his front paws. He has always done that. I capitalized on it and now Amos crosses his paws when I say something to him. Pano does not twirl, he spins, he flies around in circles and it was so easy to teach him to spin. Mello mimics everything – she is super easy to train. When she does something you like, give her a click and a good girl and she knows that one. Her brain is like a steel trap! She is smarter than me! I don’t make a dog sit, I just tell them they did good when they sat and give them a click and treat. They catch on in no time that – “hey! All I did was plop my butt down and Mama rewarded me for it. That’s cool!” Down – same thing. I add the command when I tell them they did it right. I talk funny a lot “sit good” Or they did “down good”. We stay with one command until they have it, then we take a break and play. I find that if we go over 20 minutes, my dog is ready to do something else. I always end on a good note, if I am working on sit, we sit and then we break. None of my dogs are going to give me the time of day if they are tired or they just ate or it is dinnertime. They have lots better things on their mind. It really is not that difficult. Just find a dog with a high IQ (or not) and let the dog do what he does only this time, tell him he did it right. He learns naturally and it works for me. Tanya is great at playing bug. She lies in the grass, rolls onto her back and wiggles to scratch her back. She looks like a bug that is trying to roll over, so now, Play Bug is part of her training lesson. Gee that one was a natural but by learning one, the second one of sitting was so much easier, because now she knew what to expect. On another note – when is training time. Training time is all day long - anytime that you are with your dog – feeding, watering, walking, playing, taking him to the vet or the groomers. All day, anytime during the day is time to get in a minute or two of training. All I can say is it works for me. Try it – You may like it – I know your dog will! Salmon Fudge 14 oz. can salmon 1 1/2 cups flour 2 eggs 1 tsp. garlic powder or minced garlic (optional) 1/4 cup grated parmesan or other Italian cheese (optional) Mix salmon, garlic, egg and cheese in bowl Add flour and mix to a brownie-like consistency Spread into 13×9 greased pan (it’s pretty thin in pan, but helps so you can cut into tiny pieces for training treats) Bake at 350 for 25-30 minutes When done they will a putty-like texture and the edges will pull away from the sides of the pan. Use a pizza cutter to cut into squares (or cut with cookie cutter) and refrigerate or freeze.
Sardine Treats 3 eggs 2 tins of sardines packed in olive oil 1 package of graham crackers (an inside sleeve, not the entire box) Dump everything into a blender (I use a bowl and mixer and break up the graham crackers by hand a little before mixing) and blend until completely combined. Pour into a 9 x 13″ baking dish and spread out. Bake at 350 degrees for approximately 20 minutes until top looks Rubbery. Cut into treat sized pieces and refrigerate or freeze.
