The Story of Am. Ph. It. Champion Canton Jet Li: A Once in a Lifetime Win for Canton Pomeranians Canton Pomeranians has been in the show scene is the Philippines since 1977 and I had my share of wins…many big wins locally. I have sent dog overseas and many of these dogs have distinguished themselves around the world in 5 continents with championship and grand championship titles in their new homeland. One in Australia became a grand champion and even top toy for the year. But for me, the biggest challenge is making a name for myself in the US where competition is the toughest. And so, in pursuit of this dream, I have sent homebreds to the US for their American Championship title such that in 1999, I was awarded the #2 top breeder in the US for the number of American Champions finished that year. But no dog with a big name has been really associated with me…until I send PH HOF Canton the Gigolo who was well noticed in the US Pomeranian world. From Gigolo, a double Gigolo grandson, named PH HOF TH AM Ch. Canton Bravestar was soon to be another Banner for Canton Pomeranians. And now, a Bravestar son, Ph. It Ch. Canton Jet Li would become the ultimate star…winning Best of Pictured above from left to right: Judge Jacqueline Stacy, Handler Faustino Farro, and American Pomeranian Club President Vikki Oelerih.

Breed from the Classes at the American Pomeranian Club
Nationals last March 13, 2013. A once in a life-time win. On the cover of this blog is the show photo of Jet Li and When Bravestar was being specialled and shown in Thailand, he won 2 Reserve Best in Show and 1 Best in Show finishing as a Thailand champion over the weekend. It was such a triumphant win because no dog from the Philippines ever won the class and more so for the breed in Thailand. A Hadleigh inclined Pomeranian breeder commented that the face of Bravestar was not sweet enough to which I responded quickly and defensively…that his face was sweet enough. Weeks after that, I really do not know if it was by power of suggestion…or simply my critical and perfectionist mind that started bugging me that I have to improve my head pieces which was being admired by many but which I now thought needed to improve. Somehow, having originated from Hadleigh, I missed the smiling faces of the Pomeranians that I use to have and breed. In my pursuit of improved movement, I have lost those beautiful faces…the small almond shaped eyes with black mascara around the eyeliners, the accentuated wedged-shaped muzzle and the smiling expression typical of Hadleigh. Furthermore, I also wanted SET and CEMENT these 3 characteristics in my line: 1. Really higher tail sets with long straight plumage, 2. The impeccable rears with the right angulations that I used to have in the Hadleigh line, and 3. Perfect bites with perfect incisors count of 6-6. And so, I decided to go back to my old Hadleigh line where they have the best headpieces possible and I remember they had those super rears with good angulation. And so, I started to search for females from this line….must have those beautiful heads plus the 3 characteristics that I wanted to strengthen…tail, rears, 6-6 incisors. I would go for trips choosing from hundreds of bitches only to get a handful that fit my requirements. From these bitches purchased, I started breeding Bravestar to them. I first litter produced Ph. Gr Ch. Canton Genghis Khan. I thought this was a clicking combination and so I repeated the breeding which then produced Ph. It Ch. Canton Jet Li….and that is how Jet Li was produced!
Pictured above: A puppy photo of Jet Li.
With a repetition of Genghis Khan, I decided to let Jet Li go because it was a repetition anyway and Jet was more American looking while Genghis was more English looking. (I think that was a wrong move). I decided to give it for free to an Italian customer, Gloria Casatori, who has purchased a good number of poms from me but I thought she seems not to making the right choices…rather, I did not like her choices. I thought by gifting the dog to her, she would have a better breeding program. And so, at a young age, Jet went to Florence, Italy, eventually to become an Italian champion.

Prior to his Italian championship, Jet Li was shown at the World Dog Show in Paris. The judge dropped him from the table while trying to measure his height. It must have been a traumatic experience for him and it took some time for him to recover. I was told Father Dante Daylusan in Rome was instrumental in his recovery plus showing him towards his Italian title.
During one of my communications with Fabian Arienti, he mentioned to me how wonderful Jet Li was in spite of the fact that the accident is the Paris World Dog Show. This, with the passing away of his sire, Bravestar in 2011 and the lukewarm interest of Gloria on Jet Li, I proposed to buy him back. So, last December 2012, Jet Li came back to Canton Pomeranians. His condition was satisfactory but I thought that he has to be reconditioned much more. First, he muscles was not developed, so he was made to swim for 30 minutes three time a week. Second, because his nails was not cut short and the hair in between the paws were long, he did not seem to have that tiptoe look and was down in the pastern. I will now share a trade secret and I hope I do not offend anyone…We had to put him down and cut his nails short and cauterize it so that the veins will shrink backwards and he would be up on the pastern. Trimming around the paws was done to stimulate and fast pace the growth of the leg hair. Third, his coat had to be conditioned to be in full bloom. This catch up for his coat conditioning was supplemented with changing 50% of his feed to Pacifica dog food of Acana(while the Pictured above: Am. Ph. It. Champion Canton Jet Li
other 50% was Royal Canin to body him up). Supplements were used like Missing Link,
Omega and the like. Fourth, was the dedicated training done by Tino disciplining Jet who has been so much spoiled by Gloria. Plus his traumatic experience. I recall about a month before the US trip, Jet was shown. At the judging table, Jet would not allow the judge to touch his mouth. I was so upset with Tino that for a while we were planning to scrap the plan of bringing him to the APC Nationals. Fortunately, we did pursue our original plan. Pictured is Jet Li during the Philippine Dog Show Circuit, one month before the Nationals. Jet Li finished his Philippine title before going to the American Pomeranian Club Nationals in Louisville, Kentucky last March 10-13, 2013. We arrived the day before the show, with Jet competing upwards from the

Red Orange Cream Sable Open Dog Class winning in his class, then Winners Dog, Best of Winners to the Ultimate Best of Breed. This was a win I never expected and imagined. A once in a lifetime win, am told that this win is really big because it was from the classes. The last time this happened was in 1991 with an open bitch named CH.Cenla Annie Laurie O'Friday. I suppose that makes him the first dog (male) Pomeranian to win the Breed at the APC Nationals from the classes. It makes Canton Pomeranians proud. It is also a win that can also serves as an inspiration for the people of my country…just like Manny Pacquiao…or winning a Miss Universe contest. This accomplishment would not have been realized had it not been for many people who was in the team to make this happen: Firstly, many thanks to Gloria, for giving Jet back to me. Secondly, to Sam(Tino’s son) and Gilbert who took care of Jet, conditioning him and going to the pains pf making him swin three times a week…and blow drying him! Thirdly, to Tinowho took time training Jet again and again until he became a real show dog. Fourthly, to Chris Heartz, who time and time again would trim my poms prior to the Nationals bringing out the best in them. Fifthly, to all my friends here in the Philippines and US (including the visiting foreigners) who were supportive of us including the win of Jet Li. Lastly, to Judge Jackie Stacy, for seeing the beauty of Jet and the hard work that we have invested in him. After the show, we left Jet Li behind with our friends Carlene and David Gilstrap to finish his American title. Two weeks after the Nationals, Carlene showed him in two shows in Alabama winning Best of Breed from the classes, with 4 points each show or 8 points. With his Nationals win of 5 points, he has accumulated 3 majors with 13 points, 2 points short to his American title. Hopefully, he should finish in the next show which is scheduled another 2 weeks after…UNDEFEATED by any American Pomeranian in the US. Copyright. Canton Pomeranians 2013. www.cantonpomeranians.com

Dog Hair
The coat on a Pomeranian dog is fur. Humans have some fur on our legs arms, on men’s chests and hair on most people’s heads. The only real difference between hair and fur is that fur will only grow to a specific length while hair will keep on growing. Fur has rest periods known as telogen phases where the hair follicles are dormant. The growth period is known as the anagen phase. In Pomeranians and other Nordic breeds, this phase seems to be quite short. The dog’s genes determine the growth length and then the follicles will rest. If the dog is stressed, the time of both phases can be affected.
Dog hair is composed of a hard material named keratin which is an insoluble protein with high levels of sulphur (the amino acid called cystine) and smaller amounts of other amino acids including leucine and tyrosine. Your hair grows from follicles just under your outer layer of skin.
Each strand of hair grows from one follicle for people. Dogs can have compound and single follicles of hair. One central follicle that creates the guard hair or primary hair can have two or even more lateral follicles which can create 5-25 secondary hairs for each follicle.
The thickness or coarseness of hair on dogs can vary and is one function of the diameter of the hair. Finer dog hairs can measure around 75 microns. Coarser dog hairs can be more than 200 microns.
For a dog’s hair to be healthy, it needs to eat a nutritious, well-balanced diet consisting of: proteins (particularly the ones rich in the amino acids including sulphur, methionine and tyrosine; copper, essential fatty acids and the B group of vitamins. Almost a third of a dog’s daily protein needs is used to renew the hair and skin.
Various hormones can affect the proper growth of hair. The growth and thyroid hormone stimulates the hair follicles while sexual hormones and corticoids slow down the growth of the follicles. If prolactin (lactating females produce this hormone) remains high, the dog’s

coat will look like a healthy, summery coat instead of a sparse, thin one. If the appearance or texture of your dog’s coat changes, it’s an indication that there’s an internal problem. However, there’s not one single condition or disease to which this can be attributed. An imbalance in the diet can cause brittle or dull hair, but it may also be caused by diseases of parasitic, renal, immune system, hepatic or digestive source. Hair changes usually occur late in the disease’s course because the growth of hair is slow. It’s usually a minimum of four weeks before positive effects on your dog’s hair can be seen if dietary supplements are added to the dog’s diet.
The shine of the coat of a healthy dog is mainly caused by fats that get secreted through sebaceous glands within the skin that act as a natural release of conditioners for hair. Despite popular belief, there are no dogs that never shed hair. It’s just that some shed more than others. Every shaft created by a hair follicle has to die eventually and get dislodged (shedding) so it can be replaced by the new hair shaft the follicle makes. Some breeds of dog have hair that grows for longer periods before it sheds.
A hair follicle has a couple of different growth phases. Anagen is the growing phase when the follicle grows hair. Then comes the catagen phase which is a short break between the resting and growing phases. The telogen phase happens when the hair follicle lies dormant. New hair forces the old hair out from the dog’s skin. Although both Fall and Spring cause prolific growth of hair, not all the dog’s follicles are in the one phase simultaneously so he should never get completely bald.
Human hair is mostly in the growing stage (anagen) and this phase may last years, according to how long your genes determine your hair should be. The resting phase only lasts a few weeks. Poodles have a similar anagen phase to humans and their hair gets so long that it must be trimmed a couple of times each year before it finally falls out.
Most other dogs have a dominant resting (telogen) phase. The anagen phase only lasts long enough so the coat can reach its genetically chosen length. This period could be a month, a year or sometimes even longer. Then the hair goes back to the telogen phase for a long time period. The hair in the follicle is very tightly bound and can’t easily be pulled or fall out. In Pomeranian and other Nordic dog breeds, it’s believed that this phase can exist for years. Shaving or clipping the coat of your Pomeranian whilst in this telogen phase is believed to be the reason behind most cases of post clipped alopecia. Post-clipping alopecia can also be an advance indication of hypothyroidism or other metabolic 15

disorders. Taking your Pomeranian to a groomer may be a risky venture. Shaving or clipping the coat very short on a double coated dog like the Pomeranian may cause damage to the hair follicles. After visiting the Grooming Salon, the Pomeranian’s coat could grow back quickly, or it might not grow again for years, if ever. Some Pomeranians have had very short hair cuts at grooming salons and then have had success with recoating for many years; then the hair growth suddenly stops.
Any stress that a dog endures can force hair follicles into their resting period. Stressors can include: pregnancy, diseases, anaesthesia or when the dog has been given some specific medications. Approximately 2 - 3 months after the event when the dog’s hair reactivates, the shedding will be abnormal.
Hair colour
The colour of your dog’s coat is decided genetically. However, some environmental factors can change the colour a little. Some nutrients may change the coat’s colour. Deficiencies of phenylalanine, tyrosine, methionine, cystine and arginine have been reported as causes of hair colours changing. Protein deficiencies can affect the hair growth and the quality of your dog’s hair. The American Society for Nutritional Sciences produced a report after a study in 2004 that revealed deficiencies in trace elements can also impede the quality of your dog’s hair. A lack of zinc caused grey hair; a lack of copper causes black or brown hair to fade. Hair colour can also be affected if the dog is deficient in biotin, pantothenic, nicotinic and folic acids, vitamins B2, B6 and A, iodine and iron.
If the dog spends too much time in the sun, the hair may become brittle and a black coat may go brown or red in colour. Once a dog has had his coat clipped, the colour is lighter and some scars may leave a hair mark for the rest of his life.
In older dogs, their hair colour often fades, commonly going gray, starting with his muzzle and head.
Loss of hair in dogs There are a few common reasons why dogs lose hair. There are also a few remedies you can use. Most problems originate in the skin. 16
PomWorld.Com
May/June, 2014
Pyotraumatic dermatitis (hot spots) Hot spots cause the dog to be itchy in one or more parts of his body or his limbs. The itchy area(s) can quickly get inflamed and raw and this problem may be caused by stress.
Natural remedies seem to work better than typical medical methods. An immune system booster such as Echinacea can definitely help. If the case is severe, some homeopathic remedies may also help.
Some hot spots can be caused if a nerve causes an itch. This can happen if the spine or a joint is out of alignment. A chiropractor can usually fix this problem easily.
Holistic approach As you can see, there are lots of possible causes for bad hair growth. This means there are also lots of possible remedies and every dog should be treated as an individual, just like humans, as different remedies will help different dogs.
There’s a good overall plan of attack that usually helps and it includes these elements:
Boosting the immune system through the use of omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants and herbal remedies. Ensuring the dog’s diet is nutritious and there are no deficiencies. Use supplements if necessary to balance it out.
Include raw meat in the diet (start with 1 teaspoon for every 20 pounds of weight and build to a quarter or one third of the dog’s diet.) Meat is believed to be the best hair coat and skin “medicine” you can get.
Use a chiropractor if the need arises simply because it works. 17

Some natural remedies are excellent. For example – calming herbs and/or flower essences if the dog is stressed or nervous; topical herbs for faster healing and itchiness; homeopathy and acupuncture when needed.
Other things you can do yourself Massage and use a rubber mitt on your dog’s sebaceous gland to release natural skin and hair conditioners.
Ensure your dog is brushed or combed regularly and is always clean. This will help you better monitor his overall health and build your bond at the same time. Ensure your dog’s coat is fed good quality, nutritious food with fresh meat. Dog shampoos and pH Some say dogs should only be washed with dog shampoo as human shampoo dries out his skin. Some claim the pH is different. But these are false claims.
Human shampoos have different pH levels, depending on the type. Some are acidic and are around 2.0 pH. Some are alkaline at around 9.0 pH. The majority sit at 5.5 to 6.0 pH. The shampoos for dogs also vary but are mainly more alkaline and go from 4.5 to 9.0 pH. Human and dog skin also vary in their pH levels. Human’s is around 5.5 and slightly acidic. Human hair is usually slightly more acidic at 4.5 to 5.0 pH. The skin of dogs is generally neutral at 7.0 to 8.0 pH when slightly alkaline.
However, these figures are all just averages and people and dogs can vary a lot. In 2007, a report revealed variations in dogs seemed to change according to their breed. Labradors are 7.37 pH and Manchester Terriers are 8.07 pH. Other factors also affected the pH levels of the dogs and these included excitement level, the gender of the dog, gonadal status, colour of the coat, where the skin is measured and, surprisingly, what time of year it is.

The term “pH balanced” is commonly used by advertisers to sell conditioners and shampoos. Although it sounds good, it can mean different things. The manufacturer can mean the product has been made to approximate the skin and hair’s average pH of intended users, whether dog or human. It also can mean it has a neutral pH, the same as water. If you look at the outer surface of hair through a microscope, it looks like a terracotta roof that has overlaying rows of flat cells. Pull one strand between two fingers and it will feel smoother in one way than it would another way. Substances that have a lower pH usually harden and tighten these so-called “tiles” of your hair cuticles. This makes the hair shinier and smoother. Diluted lemon juice or vinegar makes your hair even shinier for this reason. If there’s more alkaline, the “tiles” start to swell up and are dull and rough.
Whether a product will dry out hair or skin involves a lot more than merely pH. Shampoos that are made with soap can dry your dog’s skin and leave behind a residual trace which may cause dandruff and itchiness. Soapy products are usually alkaline. If you have shampoo made with detergent, it rinses off better and is higher in acidity. Some of the products also have humectants that attract and store moisture within the shaft and/or conditioning elements that make the hair simple to comb and control static electricity. One or more of these may affect your dog’s skin and hair in an annoying or pleasing manner, depending on the skin and coat type of your dog. From www.pomeranian.org. Copyright 2014.

That statement sounds dumb and it may be dumb, then again, it may happen! If you are a breeder – small or large – let’s just grab a number – say you have 25 dogs , your stud dogs, your breeding dogs, your puppies and a few showing dogs. Let’s say that these dogs are not only your small business, they are the loves of your life. They are your companions and the thought of losing them is devastating. Let’s say that you live in Arizona and let’s say that Arizona has been having a lot of wild fires. Let’s say that a policeman just banged on your door and told you to get out of the house and the area NOW. The wind has shifted and your home is right in the path of a huge fire. Let’s say that you tell the policeman – okay, just hang on, we are coming! You start running around the house collecting dog kennels and chasing dogs, you start yelling at your wife to grab some stuff and get out and you will be right behind her. Let’s say that your two young children are crying because they don’t want to go right now – well, not until all the dogs are ready to go. So they start trying to help you catch them. Let’s say your wife is trying to put together some stuff you will need to feed the dogs. So far only six dogs are in the kennels and are still not in the van. You notice traffic is racing by as people are getting out. Two men stop and look in and tell you = leave the damned dogs, you have to get out now. They grab your wife and kids and start escorting them out of the house yelling that they have no time to do anything except get in the vehicle and get out. Not having planned for a disaster just turned into a major disaster. Getting out timely means being prepared – just like the marines or is it the Army or Boy Scouts? I know one of those organizations are supposed to be prepared. Obviously if the person described above is you = you were never a marine or in the army. Being prepared means being aware of what is going on in your vicinity. Being prepared is paying attention to weather, fires, floods, or even a predicted volcanic explosion or earthquake. Being prepared means being ready to act at a moment’s notice if the worst possible nightmare should happen. Being prepared means that all 25 of your animals, your wife, your kids and you will be driving off within minutes after you are told to Get OUT. You would not have chased dogs at the last minute. Those frightened babies, who can smell smoke and danger a long way off would have already been kennelled and ready to go. Being prepared means there is emergency food, blankets, first aid kit, shelter, water or a means to purify water, in the case of having dogs, you have adequate kennels ready to go. You were so prepared that you knew before the knock came that you were going to need to hit the road, so when the cop came knocking, you did not answer, you just left a note stating that you had evacuated and the route you took. Prepared means you have a place or places to go. Prepared means that where you are going is expecting you and your family and all the dogs. Prepared means that if place number 1 also had to evacuate, place number 2 is in a safe zone and you can head there. Better yet if place number 2 does not work out, you are prepared with place 3 and you are also prepared to set up camp at place number 4 if the disaster is even more widespread than you or anyone else predicted. Prepared means not only having places to go, people to see who can help you, and things to do that will save your life, prepared means you can be totally alone and still survive. You have planned to survive so before any sign of a disaster occurred, you had all the things you would need to survive packed and ready to go. It means that the moment the decision was made to evacuate, your wife ran out and grabbed four bags; small, condensed bags that contained everything that you and each member of your family needed. Just like the survivalist on Television. She tossed that into the van which already contained a lot of stuff such as a first aid kit and a survival kit. One child grabbed a tray the contained all current medications that people were on and the other did the same for all the dogs. They placed them in a bad that contained all medical records and then went to the van, put the medical supplies in an ice chest, closed it then got in and put on their seat belts. They were ready to go. In the meantime you had been carrying out the small dogs and placing them in kennels that were loaded and strapped down. Each dog had a place to go, some small ones went two to a kennel and a mother and babies into another one, but each one was already laid out and prepared. Your wife and come back and was now helping bring out dogs, two or three at a time. It was easy because all the dogs had been rounded up and kennelled in the home so you would not be looking under beds for frightened dogs or chasing one or ten around the yard. Your wife would be driving one van and you another. As soon as the dogs were loaded in her van, she drove off. It took 8 minutes.

Once the dogs were loaded, you post a note, that has already been written out and only requires a date and time, on the door to tell rescue personnel that you have left and the route you are taking, your 4 emergency stops – in numerical order - so they do not have to waste time checking the premises to see if anyone was left behind. Your are now leaving your home and will meet up with your wife 25 miles up the road. Then you will travel together. Total time – 15 minutes. Where are you headed? The emergency evacuation stations established by the state and the federal government will not allow you to bring in your dogs. Therefore, you are headed away from the fire area to a farm that a friend owns. There is a small guest cottage that you pay the upkeep on so it will be available for you and your family. It is just outside of town in a large cleared area. It is located 80 miles away. You call them on your cell phone and inform them that you are on your way. If there is a problem at that location, they will advise you and you will go either north to location number 2 or south to location number 3. Both are motels that you have made pre arrangements with. They will allow you four rooms to accommodate you, your family and your dogs. If those two locations are compromised, you are on your own taking the advice of emergency personnel about the safest direction to head and now you must rely on emergency supplies that are stored in your van. Life is not going to be as comfortable, but you have shelter and heat (should this disaster have come during the months where you could be in inclement weather. You will survive because you have planned to survive. You family is altogether. Had one or more of the children been in school, you know the evacuation points where the children would be taken so you can pick them up. All you had to do was check with emergency personnel as to the safe locations that were being used. My estimate if less than 5% of the people reading this will either make an emergency evacuation plan or already has one in place. Approximately 15% will initiate a plan of sorts and have an idea of what they should do before, during, and after the emergency. At least they know enough to corral your animals as soon as it is announced that your home may be in the path of a disaster. You have a plan if an unannounced disaster should hit! An earthquake or tsunami for example (not unlikely along the coastal areas). It is not foolproof, but at least you have a meeting location for members of the family to meet and responsibilities such as turning off the gas lines to the house, throwing power circuits and then corralling your pets and crating them. You know where your first aid kit is, you know to draw water in the bathtub and fill up any other emergency water reserves. Your children have been taught where the safest points are in a home during an earthquake and it is not under a table. The 25% may at least talk about making a plan. The rest will not even do that. For those of you who want to know what a first aid/disaster kit should contain, Here is a concise list: For your pets: Check off list: 1.
Vaccinate your pet. If you haven't already done so, get those shots now. Infectious diseases can become a big threat after a disaster.
2.
Get your pet an ID tag. If a pet becomes lost or escapes during the confusion of an evacuation, proper identification will increase the chances of a safe return home. Consider having your pet tattooed or "micro chipped.
3.
Take clear, color photos (frontal, left and right sides) of your pet, and store these with your pet's license, medical records and ownership papers in a waterproof carrier to take with you.
4.
Contact your local animal shelter, humane society, and veterinarian or emergency management office for information on caring for pets in an emergency.
5.
39
Decide on a safe location(s) in your house (or a shelter if forced to evacuate ie: Tornado shelter)
PomWorld.Com

6.
Prepare an emergency contact list of motels and hotels in your surrounding area allow pets, well in advance of needing them. Ask friends, relatives, or others outside the affected area whether they could shelter you and your animals
7.
TIP: Pets and Disaster Shelters: One of the biggest misconceptions about pets and disasters is that they are included in government/municipal evacuation plans. That's not always the case. As we saw after Hurricane Katrina people are sometimes encouraged by authorities to leave their pets behind. Similarly, when people become displaced and evacuate with their pets, people assume any help they receive will extend to their pets as well. In most cases pets, for fear of disease, disruption, etc. aren't allowed in evacuation shelters. Your pet may be forced to go somewhere else. Take it upon yourself to be responsible for your dog or cat, and never assume. Bring everything you can to help your pet survive and don't evacuate without your pet. When assembling an emergency kit for the household, include items for pets:
o Carrier or crate for your pet o Copy of medical records and microchip information o Extra food (The food should be dry and relatively unappealing to prevent your pet from over-eating. Store the food in sturdy containers.) o Extra medication(s) o Have a current photograph in your kit, in case you're separated from your pet. o Kitty litter o Large capacity self-feeder and water dispenser o Leash and collar o Water (or water purification methods) * First Aid Kit * See note
Be safe, be smart. Bring your pets indoors as soon as there is a watch or warning issued. For your family: On the U.S. Government web page, there is a complete list of everything you should have on hand to keep your family safe. Go to http://www.ready.gov/build-a-kit A well-equipped first aid kit for pets should include: Roll cotton Some cotton balls Gauze pads

SHADOW – AKA “BAHSTOY SILVER PHANTOM RN” This is a little fellow, we purchased for our breeding program several years ago. I co-own him with a friend of mine, and we planned on using him with our girls. He has a lovely pedigree, and we loved his colouring. I bred him once, to one of my girls when he was about 9 months old and the result was 2 female puppies. By the time he was a year old, both his co-owner and I decided that his temperament was not what we wanted to breed into our programs so he was neutered. And he grew – past the standard size. At this point, I gave one of the puppies to his co-owner, feeling because she was out her investment, she deserved at least one of the puppies. We could have worked with the size, but not the temperament. I soon realized he loved to “work”. He heels beautifully, he sticks to me like Velcro. So, I began working on some Rally exercises, thinking that if he liked it, we may get in the ring to compete. The Novice level is on lead, and no other dogs in the ring so he was safe with me. He feels safe if he is on his lead, he never lunges at anyone, or other dogs – much preferring to hide behind me if possible. Well, we got in the ring. April of 2013 he obtained his first leg of the Novice title, obtaining the second leg in July at the show hosting our Specialty. His third and final leg of the title was obtained April 2014. His anxiety level while at a show environment is high, but the judges have advised it is certainly not noticeable when he is “working”. Not sure if we will go on to Advanced – it is off lead so we will have to work on that. Moral of the story – never give up. Several people said “why don’t you put him down”? I am very cautious with him – especially with our other dogs. We have had one incident with him – with one of our own boys. I take the blame for that because I left them outside while I came in for something. Not quite sure what happened – but our older boy ended with an injury. So, they are never allowed together. With regard to advancing with Shadow, we will practice, and will submit video routines to the Cyber-Rally online – we can do this in the safety of our yard, or a training facility. The main thing, is these little ones need to be kept busy. Again – don’t let them down – work with them – it is so worth it. Roberta Malott. Pondside Toys. Ontario, Canada.

Our Story
BRIAN, SNOOP & LULU. In a nutshell, how these Dochlaggie’s kids became McCue’s Majority of my story will be all about my hairy’ s so I will start in telling you a little bit about myself and how the Pomeranian breed became a part of my life. For those of you who don’t know me, my name is Jen and I am addicted to Pomeranians, especially of the Dochlaggie variety. I started my habit back in 2008 when I made a random comment that I would own a Pomeranian one day. This sent my sister off on a mission to find me the best. From memory I think she spent a good 6+ months hunting for that one special one. She knew that with my lifestyle at the time I would be much better suited to an older pom looking for a home rather than a puppy. This was how the quest for my sexy hardcore man unit came about...the one and the only...Brian. I was shown a picture of him on Denise’s website and it was something about that scrunched up nose and toothy smile that had me hooked. After a brief discussion, the idea wasn’t mentioned again. I didn’t know at the time that my sister had set the wheels in motion to have him travel to the west coast. It was only when I received a phone call asking me to come to her place after work that I would find out what she was up to. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary as this was a normal thing for me to do. It was this afternoon that I got to meet the man that will forever hold the key to my heart. I work as an Electrical and Instrumentation Designer for different EPCM companies around Perth. It was in 2010 whilst sitting in my office (online shopping for my monkey) that I found myself completely “off track” and browsing Denise’s Dochlaggie website. I had a “brain fart idea” that Brian would love a “brutha from another mutha”. It was at this moment that I saw a little white mug shot that I fell in love with. This would be my Snoop. I wasn’t quite prepared or knew what to expect from Snoop, I kind of made the rookie mistake of thinking that he would be just as perfect as Brian. Oh how very wrong I was, the challenge had well and truly been set.

PO MMY MU M CONT. .. Brian had come over to me at the age of 5 whereas Digs was just 4 months old. I had a lot of learning to do. I will never forget Snoop’s first trip in the car to his nans. I could have boxed him up and shipped the little turd burger back. I had just finished getting tailor made sheepskin seat covers made for my car and half way through our trip Digs decided to unload what could have possibly been the biggest sloppiest turd right smack bang in the middle of the back seat. It was huge for what was a baby Snoop dog and this was the start of Snoop and my love for each other. I have learnt a lot from Brian and Snoop. I was so very green when it came to the Pomeranian breed. I knew nothing about anything really. Right down to all the different coat colours or the dreaded puppy uglies (Snoop took first prize for that one) or the medical conditions that some poms are prone to. It has and will continue to be a massive learning curve and am thankful to my boys for teaching me. It’s the love for them that makes me google and investigate every follicle on their bodies. When Brian passed away in July last year, I’m not going to lie, I was not in a good place. I never thought I would have another one. Not one that would remind me so much of him anyway. Then in December 2013, along came my little Nator machine, “Lulu”. Again, I did not know she would be making the big trip west. I had known that Denise was looking for a home for her but I had been so adamant that if I were to have another one then I wanted another boy and wolf sable was my first preference of course (I was looking for my Brian which I knew deep down I would never find). My mum had organized for Lulu to come over knowing not much about her. I cannot repeat what my exact words were when I saw her, but Nator won me over in the first few minutes when she busted out the “dirty bastard” right in front of me on the couch! Pretty much from this moment forward I have had a permanent shadow. It was revealed later that Lulu was in fact Brian’s niece. This would explain the extreme similarities that they both share. I think it also could be one of the reasons that we just “clicked” with each other straight away, she has one of those unique personalities everyone seems to fall for. I think the hardest thing about owning a pom is those unfortunate times when you have to leave them. I experienced this recently when I had to take a role that required me to do a 3 week rotation out of Hedland. Three weeks away from them felt like a lifetime when you are used to spending every other non-working minute including them in your daily activities. When I had a contract in Perth, I set up a monitor at home so I could “check in” on them. Sometimes that would be all you needed to put a smile back on your face. They really are the ultimate breed, a pocket full of cheekiness. One of my ultimate dreams is to own a beach front cafe for pet lovers just like myself. I love taking the kids out for their Sunday breakfasts or baby chinos and think it would be great to be able to have them come to work with you. It was either that or win lotto and purchase a massive property down in Margs or Dunsbourgh and convert it into a 5 star retirement village for poms.

PO MMY MU M CONT. .. Activities I love to do with my kids. As you have probably gathered by now, I do on the odd occasion like to purchase an outfit or 2 for my kids. Brian was the main instigator in what was to eventually become a seriously bad habit of online shopping addiction. I have seen myself on several occasions having to drop my credit card (note: I used mine not Bri’s) into a container of water to stick in the freezer to try remove any sudden urges of retail therapy. It was his poster boy good looks and enviable physique that fueled my craze. Bri could have made a potato sack look like it had just walked off of a Paris runway. Digs also became accustomed to wearing clothes although he tires quickly of all the paparazzi attention I lather on him so Nators has had to “take one for the team” and has become my next victim. We enjoy SUPping and plenty of beach visits in the warmer months (Digs is quite a fan of the deep blue) and on nice days I like to take the kids out with their nan for a cooked breakfast down at one of the foreshores or sometimes just to enjoy a stroll and a chino, a visit to the ice cream parlor or fish and chips on the beach. If their is an event on where the kids are welcome, you will no doubt see us there as most of my time off is spent with them so if they are not welcome then we don’t go.
How their “aka” names came about. Brian was named before he came over to me. There was no way I would have changed his name, he had been “Brian” for 5 years. I do however have a lot of nicknames for him, Snoop and Lulu. A few of them were Butterball, Monkey and Mania. I used to refer to him as monkey more than anything, cause he was a cheeky boy and butterball came about cause...well...he was fat! Digs come about by mistake really. I used to call him “Diggity” from the Dr Dre song “No Diggity”...keeping in with the rap theme hence Snoop as in “Snoop Dogg”. Mum didn’t quite work out that I was saying diggities and used to call him diggies. So by default we call him Digs. Lulu’s is pretty simple really. Not long after she got here I started calling her “The Lulu-nator”. Its not hard to see how she ended up being aka “Nators”. I hope you have enjoyed reading a little about me and the kids. I have included on the next page, 10 things you may not know about Brian, Snoop and Lulu. Its more so some of their quirks, traits and habits. They have plenty more but these were a few that came to mind.

10 THINGS YOU MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT MY KIDS... 1). Brian has his own wardrobe. One of my favourite past times was online shopping for my monkey. I was always on the google looking for his next outfit, costume or accessory to add to his ever growing collection. Brian had his own credit card which was used for expenses such as medical, clothes, grooming etc. I had set him up a bank account which I would transfer his pocket money into on a weekly basis. I would tell him that he had to complete his weekly chores in order to receive his “wages” (but we all know that was a lie). You might find it surprising that the butterball had chores to attend to but after all the family meetings that he arranged we came to a compromise. I didn’t ask much of him just that he be a good boy when I was at work, eat all his dinners and make sure he gets plenty of sleep time so we could enjoy our daily walks to maintain his sexy physique. The boy could have earnt himself a PHD in sleeping, he was an expert at it. 2). I was originally going to call Snoop “Gary”. Haha, yep! True story! I was going to name Snoop after Spongebob Squarepants pet snail Gary. I don’t know what is was though, something kept drawing me back to the name “Snoop”. 3). Snoop likes to be elevated when he sleeps. One of Digs household rules is he likes to be the first one in bed so he gets to choose the pillow he wants, more times than not he will go right. Lulu has claimed Brian’s bed I had him specially made as her own. She isn’t silly, this spot has maximum a/c flow.
6). Snoop doesn’t enjoyed being fussed over. I always say that Brian and Lulu love to be loved whereas Digs is a whole other story. I have to force Snoop to show his affection. For example, pin him down to the bed and make him give me a kiss good night, he wont just hand them out freely. 7). Digs enjoys “Snoop time”. Generally Digs is an easy going and social kind of guy. Yet, there are times when he acts a little strange. For instance, sometimes for no reason he will go hide under the bed or take himself off to the theatre room slinky couch for some quality Snoop Dawg “loner” time. I think he would rather refer to it as his “let everything hang out” sexy time though. Either that or he has just pooped his knickers and doesn’t want me to see due to the result being a bum wash. 8). Snoop gets shy when going for a poop. He will spend as much time as needed to find the perfect pooping spot, it is generally around a corner out of public viewing which I do have to say is very considerate of him. 9). The kids most favourite past time is “Driving”. I’m sure deep down Snoop is hoping to see some babes outside hosing down their doghouses in bikinis. I have seen myself going for a drive just so the hairy’s can come along for the ride. 10). Brian has been titled. Ancient tradition is that if you own land in Scotland, this allows you to style yourself with a title. Brian’s nan bought him a plot of land in Lochaber Highland Estate in Scotland which not only gives him the title of “Laird Brian McCue” but it also helps to preserve and maintain the land that has had centuries of deforestation. Just another way my butterball liked to contribute to charity organizations.
4). Snoop and Lulu believe they have been hired by neighbourhood watch. Digs and Nator truly believe that they are under cover superheroes sent to downtown Secret Harbour to fend off bad guys and keep watch for any criminal activity that might be going down in their hood. They generally practice their routine from the safety of the garage or if Digs hears a louder than normal noise he will hide in the toilet and make me go investigate while he covers me from behind. Saying this though, he still thinks he is as bad ass as they come. Lulu is a lot more “beastly” in her approach. She makes the largest of breeds check their knickers as they walk past her yard. 5). Lulu has a trade mark move. Yes, the one trade mark move that Brian had mastered, Lulu does as well. The “Dirty Bastard”. She not only can do it, she has nailed it!
