Marko Iglendza is transforming the way travelers spend their time at an airport, one terminal at a time. Iglendza is the founder and CEO of Terminal Getaway Spa, a multi-national enterprise headquartered in Chicago.

M ARKO I GLENDZA

Iglendza is first and foremost an entrepreneur with a keen sense of market timing. He identified the need for an upscale experience in U.S. airports as travel delays and early check-ins were on the rise. Iglendza decided to bring a 5-star spa experience into an airport environment. Currently there are Terminal Getaway Spas in airports in Chicago, Charlotte and Orlando with plans for more locations, offering everything from ‘Last-Minute’ manicures to ‘Jet-Lag’ foot messages to a ‘Bod Voyage’ full-body massage. This Chicago resident has a degree from Northwestern University and a law degree from DePaul Law School. Prior to launching Terminal Getaway Spa in 2006, Iglendza had several successful start-ups under his belt.

(Marko Iglendza (center) receives the Best New Consumer Service Concept Award in April for his Terminal Getaway Spa concept. Charlotte Douglas is home to one of the spas. Jules Clifford) The businessman behind the spa at Charlotte Douglas International Airport has been awarded the Best New Consumer Service Concept Award, a distinction selected from more than 300 nominations across the U.S. and Canada. Marko Iglendza, a Chicago entrepreneur, operates five Terminal Getaway Spas in three airports – Charlotte, O’Hare and Orlando. Iglendza created the spa concept with travel delays and early check-ins in mind. The spas have private treatment rooms, services such as manicures and massages, and trained, licensed technicians. The award was presented in April during the Business of Airports Conference hosted by the Airport Council International.

“O’Hare airport spa relieves flying stress.” A chair massage at an airport is not like most other chair massages. For instance, while sitting there with your head buried and a pair of blissful hands kneading your shoulders and back, you’re quite likely to hear someone exclaiming, “My flight’s already been delayed, like, four times today!” And then they explain that their departure has been moved from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and, finally, 4 p.m. Such chirping distraction is antithetical to most massages, but at O’Hare International Airport, it couldn’t matter less; you take relief where you can get it. And, after shoehorning yourself into a stiff, too-narrow airplane seat between a screaming baby and someone eating a Big Mac, the relief is increasingly available at airports. A Chicago businessman is taking aim at what he sees as increasing consumer demand. Marko Iglendza has brought Terminal Getaway Spa to airports in Charlotte, N.C., and Orlando, Fla., plus three installations at O’Hare that he opened last year. At O’Hare, there are two in Terminal 3 (one of which is a kiosk) and one in Terminal 1.

to 10-minute chair massages (beginning at $19). The most popular services are 20- and 30-minute chair massages, as well as 45- or 60-minute full body massages in a private room, where you’d never know you’re in an airport amid the smooth jazz and dim lighting. He tried offering hair services at the Charlotte location, which he opened in 2006. But when it comes to grooming — hair, facials and waxing — travelers are already set, he learned. What they want, especially on a layover, is to relax. “You’re tense and annoyed, and it’s usually a long day,” when you’re at an airport, Iglendza said. “The minute someone touches you, you feel at ease.” That’s true no matter what kind of conversation is happening around you. - jbnoel@tribune.com

(He’s not alone, of course. With more than 50 locations worldwide, including one in O’Hare’s Terminal 5, XpresSpa, http://www.xpresspa.com, is among the industry leaders.) “People’s tastes have changed,” Iglendza said. “They’re looking for health and wellness types of things.” And where is health and wellness more useful than one of the most crowded and utilitarian spaces we interact with? Iglendza offers full and bite-size services, all the way down

“Zen Moments Among The Chaos Of The Airport” Stop me if you’ve heard this one before. You diligently planned your upcoming getaway and worked right up until it was time to head to the airport. As you look down at your struggle feet and chipped nails, you realize that the one thing you forgot to plan was that much needed mani-pedi and now you’re about to spend and hour or more siting in the airport, waiting to board your plane to paradise with 3 layers of callus on your feet and struggle nails. If only you could get a mani pedi! Now you can, surprisingly at the airport and it’s not only a good way to kill time but you also get a great service because let’s face it, a little r&r beats the chase for an outlet anytime. Slept wrong on that 5 hour flight now your neck is a little crooked? A legit massage at the airport is in order and you can also get one at the airport. At Chicago’s O’Hare airport, there are 2 full service spas to take advantage of that offers mani, pedi, deep tissue, couples massage and even facials. Terminal Getaway Spa, located in both terminal 1 and terminal 3 is like an unexpected oasis. Crunched for time but need to get that polish changed, in about 20 minutes you can. If you have more time to spare, you can treat yourself to a full mani-pedi or full body massage in one of their private rooms. Though you can get a clear view of the airplanes and runways, you won’t hear a peep! Pricing is comparable to what most spa’s and salons charge so it’s not like the sticker shock you get when you order a sausage egg mcmuffin and sausage and its 2x the normal price. No you don’t get one of those creepy(to me) massage chairs while you get a pedi but what you do get are very attentive associates that will scrub the dead life out of your feet. True story, during my session I had gone about 2 months without a pedi(covers eyes) so my feet was beyond struggle and Ronnie brought it back to life. As many of you plan your upcoming summer getaways or late spring break, or for ye frequent travelers, this information will come in handy. They have complete O.P.I range of products and their massage rooms are very tranquil. You’ll truly be on the right track before your getaway or business trip.

“Stuck at O’Hare, Midway? Kill Time at Airport Spas, Yoga Rooms, Galleries” CHICAGO — For many Chicagoans whose families don’t live in the city, Thanksgiving means spending several hours in the airport before and after the festivities. In fact, the Chicago Department of Aviation predicts that O’Hare and Midway airports will see more than 1.9 million passengers over the eight-day travel period this year. Compared to last year, the Aviation Department is projecting a 1.5 percent increase at O’Hare and a 3 percent increase at Midway. So instead of wasting time while you wait to board your regularly scheduled flight or — God forbid — a delayed one, why not try to make the most of it? Both airports, which will be decked out in holiday decorations, offer a bunch of unique attractions, eateries and shops, and DNAinfo Chicago rounded up some of the best: O’Hare Airport Regardless of gate assignment, all O’Hare passengers can move freely to Terminals 1, 2 and 3 after going through security, according to the aviation officials. Terminal 5, the international terminal, is excluded because it’s not connected to the others. Terminal 1: Calm your preflight jitters by getting a “Bod Voyage” full-body massage or a “Last Minute” manicure at the Terminal Getaway Spa, which is one of three locations at the airport.

“Terminal Getaway Spa Get Pampered Right at the Airport” Memorial Day and summer vacations are upon us! That means we will be spending a lot more time in O’Hare airport over the next few months. Here to make your travel experience less stressful is the Terminal Getaway Spa, located right in the middle of Terminals 1 and 3 (you can access it through the other terminals as well). Recently, I had the pleasure of spending time in the Terminal 3 spa for a manicure and pedicure with nail technician extraordinaire, Jillian Lawler. Jillian helped me pick out the right color – light blue, one of the biggest color trends of the season – then sat me down in a comfy seat equipped with phone charging plugs. Before I get into the details of my incredible service, the most important thing to know about Terminal Getaway is that everything on the menu is listed with specific time increments – and they stick to it. Massage and nail services range from 10 to 60 minutes each, so you know exactly what you are getting into while you wait for your flight. Whether you’re on an extended layover or you’ve arrived early for a flight, there is time and space for you to get pampered at this spa.

In terms of the facilities and tools, there are three massage rooms, several massage chairs, four manicure stations and at least three draining pedicure sinks (these are critical for sanitary reasons). All of the nail techs use a new set of tools for each guest and guests can even take the tools home if they like. While waiting for my nails to dry, I bumped into nutritionist (and repeat TGS customer), April Winslow. As owner of Choose to Change Nutrition Services, she reiterated the importance of regular manicures and pedicures for health reasons. (Did you know cleaning up the nails and sloughing off dead skin cells allows oxygen to reach your blood stream?) Thank you, April, for giving me another excuse to pamper myself on a regular basis. For your next visit to O’Hare, plan a visit to Terminal Getaway Spa. I guarantee it will make those layovers and flight delays much more tolerable.

The spa is magically sheltered from all of that airport background bustle, making it easy for me to peacefully enjoy my time chatting with and being pampered by Jillian. Jillian gave me a dry manicure – which means no soaking was involved. The beauty of the dry manicure is that it saves time and makes the nails less susceptible to cracking and chipping. To ensure the manicure will last as long as possible, the techs use CND products. Jillian’s favorites include the cuticle remover gel (a key component of the dry manicure) and the sticky basecoat which sticks to both the polish and your nail to help extend the life of the manicure.

“NOW AND ZEN A Trio of Posh Spas Opens at O’Hare” In 2006, Marko Iglendza opened his first Terminal Getaway Spa in the Charlotte, N.C., airport. Even then, he wanted to bring the luxe layover spot closer to home. That took eight yearsbut in late 2014, he was finally able to bring the concept to O’Hare, installing the spas in three locations in Terminals 1 and 3-a move that more than doubled the size of his company. “The day that I finally decided I wanted to expand to other airports, O’Hare made it public that [it was] issuing a request for proposals to revamp [its] retail and services areas,” Iglendza says. “It felt a little serendipitous” For harried travelers who find themselves with time to kill, Terminal Getaway Spa 12 | TERMINAL GETAWAY SPA

is an upscale respite from the crowded hum of the airport. Two of the O’Hare locations are full-service spas with offerings that can be experienced during a quick flight change or an hourslong delay. Clients can make an appointment or walk in for anything from 20-minute express manicures (from $25) to 90-minute deep-tissue massages ($195) performed in private treatment rooms. (The third location is a kiosk that offers chair massages in Terminal 3.) Iglendza knows luxury when he sees it-he’s a familiar Gold Coast face who regularly jet sets around the world and attends society events with his partner, Chicago window-washing magnate Neal Zucker, and their boldfaced name friends. His obsessive attention to detail

has already made Terminal Getaway Spa a sought-out amenity at O’Hare, especially during the frenzied holidaytravel season. “We try to create a more peaceful spa experience than what you find in most airports today,” Iglendza says, noting that O’Hare has particularly high standards for its concessionaires. “And if the client is happy, the airport is happy, and we’re happy.”

“TAKE A SPA BREAK” Yes, traveling can be stressful, which is why the airport is the perfect place for a massage. O’Hare is home to not one, not two, but three Terminal Getaway Spas (in terminals 1, 3 and the H/K corridor), offering private treatment rooms for massages, facials and waxing, along with manicure and pedicure services. But it’s more than just the snacks. ORD is home to multiple spas, a yoga room, an indoor garden, a gym and more. And don’t get us started on the land surrounding the airport, where a herd of goats, llamas and burros keep the lawn mowed, and 1 million bees fill the country’s first onsite airport apiary. Read up on what’s in store, and consider leaving just a little bit earlier for your next flight to take it all in. Don’t have time for a 90-minute deep tissue massage? You can opt for a 10-minute “Private Charter” chair massage and be on your way.

“TAKE A SPA BREAK” One of the top three busiest airports in the world and the hub for American and United, Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport (ORD) is notorious for delays, which means you may end up with a longer layover than you planned. The good news: it’s not a bad airport to be stuck in, if you must. And from the airport, the city is an easy—if not always quick—ride on the L train’s Blue Line. For pure relaxation, there are Terminal Getaway Spas in Terminals 1 and 3 and an XpressSpa in Terminal 5.

Spa treatments have become an integral element of many wellness regimens. Little wonder the industry has grown exponentially over the years. According to the most recent research from the International Spa Association, the number of spa locations in the United States rose from an estimated 4,140 in 1999 to 20,180 in 2013. They also are increasingly accessible—whether close to home, a far-flung destination or a stop along the way. Terminal Getaway Spa is a full-service spa with three locations at O’Hare International Airport and one each in Charlotte and Orlando. The menu accommodates short and long layovers, from quickie polish changes to full-body massages.

“It’s ‘Peppermint Delight’ Season at These Airport Spas” “Things you already purchase at the airport: trashy mystery novels, tabloids promising stars without makeup, Sbarro. (Do those still exist anywhere else?) Things you will now start purchasing at the airport: cranial massage, Crayola brand nail polish, a bikini wax. Go to Brazil, get a Brazilian. It’s poetry, really. Terminal Getaway Spa is the brain behind these body treatments. Billing itself as the “first and only spa designed with the traveler in mind,” Terminal offers an array of 10- to 90-minute services at (so far) five locations between three different airports: Chicago O’Hare, Charlotte Douglas, and Orlando International Airport. (Because really, nothing necessitates a massage like 6 days and 7 nights of screaming kids high on Disney crack.) Last week the spa announced that it was rolling out a variety of new treatments, including a stress-reducing, focus-restoring cranial massage; holiday themed “Peppermint Delight” mani-pedis; and the “Kid’s Crayola Meni-Pedi,” which allows your jet setting little diva to get all dolled up on the go. Pretty helpful, especially if you’re en route to the “Toddlers & Tiaras” Finals in Depressed Armadillo, TX. But actually, with its “walk-ins” welcome approach, Terminal might be able to carve itself a niche in the spa scene. After hours on an airplane, a soothing “Jet Leg” rubdown does sound pretty sweet. And if you’re running late for a destination wedding or a new client pitch, it wouldn’t hurt to maximize your layover by getting your nails done. After all, you can’t be caught without your makeup. We all know how that ends up.”

“Here’s One Way to Kill Time at the Airport This Holiday Season Get your kids’ nails did at the airport.” “Delayed flights. Crowded planes. Cranky children. Car seat struggles. Panic attacks over lost stuffed animals. Yup, sounds like holiday travel to us. When traveling through airports this holiday season, it can often be the most un-wonderful time of the year. But if your travels take you to, or through, Chicago O’Hare, Charlotte Douglas or (brace yourselves) Orlando International airports, there is some relief, thanks to the Terminal Getaway Spas at those airports. Jaunted.com mentioned the spas’ new offerings for the holiday season today and our eyes went directly to the Kid’s Crayola Mani/Pedi service which uses the Crayola brand of nail polish (about $25.) How cute and what a brilliant way to kill time at the airport.

Of course, we were also drawn to the Four Hands Massage for adults where you get two therapists using their four hands on your body for an hour. Yes, in the airport! In a private room, of course. And we were not hating the idea of a cranial massage as we wait for our flight. We might even show up early for our flight just to take advantage of this. You can even get waxing done in case you got sidetracked with the packing before you left home. (Although, this could get kind of weird. “Where did Mommy/Daddy go?” “Oh, um, just to see about something in that store over there. He/She should be back soon.”) Appointments are recommended at the Terminal Getaway Spas but this being an airport spa business, of course they accept walk-ins. You can check their exact locations in the airport terminals here.“
