LOOKING FORWARD

Looking Forward There is little doubt that we are embarking on an important and exciting chapter in the history of Bangor, Wales and beyond, of which I’m extremely privileged to be a part. With building work starting this summer, we can look forward confidently to the opening of a brand new Arts and Innovation Centre in 2014. Home to a 450 seater multi purpose theatre, small studio theatre and cinema, innovation hub and learning spaces, bars and café – all this in the heart of Bangor.

Elen ap Robert working on the HaDAsyniaDA (Idea Seeds) with children from Bangor Schools.

I look forward in the meantime to working with Dyfan Roberts and the Pontio team to develop this ongoing programme of artistic and community events, to work alongside the artist Bedwyr Williams, our Public Art consultant, and also to planting creative seeds that will bear fruit when the doors finally open. And who better to lead the way than the children and young people of Bangor – tomorrow’s audience? During the past months, groups of Bangor schoolchildren have been invited to express their HaDAsyniaDA (Idea Seeds) for the new Centre. In creative workshops, led by some of our nation’s best poets – we have gathered some of their ideas. Ideas which have all subsequently been planted in the building site itself. Their energy and imagination are caught in poems which include such vivid verses as these…

“Down where Theatr Gwynedd used to be is a big black hole where we plant our ideas, sow all our inspiration and promise to water the seeds. And that is why we ask: “Can we have a zoo there, please?” “An interactive book which reads our minds?” “A spider shop and museum?” “And please may we have a kids’ VIP lounge. Please?” (young people from Hillgrove School assisted by poet Karen Owen) As the building work gains momentum this autumn, The Globe Theatre will visit north Wales for the first time with their production of As You Like It. Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru will stage their big top version of Y Storm, Gwyneth Lewis’ translation of The Tempest. There will be monthly music Cabarets, a brand new series of Welsh language gigs Ar Y Rêls, and an innovative event bringing the arts and science together: Brain of a Dancer. Some to entertain and others to intrigue. All this, the Christmas panto Trywerynws, and much, much more… Elen ap Robert, Pontio Artistic Director

BE PREPARED TO DANCE TO THIS UNIQUE SCOTTISH FOLK ROCK BAND

HARP MUSIC FROM AFRICA AND WALES

This legendary band based on the Isle of Skye have been described as ‘The Future of Celtic Dance Music’. Nominated for the ‘Best Live Act’ award at the 2012 BBC Radio Two Folk Awards, their many influences take them from traditional jigs and reels through jazz, hip hop, reggae and more. This inventive and unique approach gives a true flavour of traditional Scottish music mixed with high octane Celtic dance music. The new 6 piece line-up combines all the dynamics of the larger band with a new, vibrant and exciting sound.

10

Respecting a musical tradition that stretches back to the 13th Century and the Mandinka Empire of West Africa, Seckou is an established contemporary master of the Kora, the 21 stringed African harp. With his feet firmly rooted in the 21st Century and the identity of his heritage clear, Seckou is keen to experiment and develop fresh ideas. This performance with his band of seven musicians promises to be one to remember. Seckou is supported by Robin Huw Bowen, named ‘The Harpist of Wales II’, and recognised world-wide as the leading exponent of the Welsh triple harp. Ranking as one of the most important figures that the Welsh folk tradition has produced, his inspired playing rekindles the very soul of the music and delivers it as a living entity to his listeners.

Renowned contemporary dancer Riley Watts and Bangor University neuroscientist Dr.Emily Cross show that there are less tangible factors that influence your perception. In an exciting boundary – crossing piece of research and performance, what happens in our brains when we watch complex movements will be studied. Prepare to be amazed‌

Mike Parker

Simon Thirsk

Bethan Gwanas

Two authors who have settled in Wales and write about the experience of being surrounded by the Welsh language and culture – Mike Parker, author of Neighbours From Hell and Rough Guides and Simon Thirsk, author of Not Quite White and director of Bloodaxe Books – talk about what it means to be an author and a Welsh learner in contemporary Wales. The author, columnist and television presenter Bethan Gwanas will try to keep the two in check. The event is especially suitable for Welsh learners and those interested in how two cultures cohabit or live in conflict.

FILM

(1923)

This classic comedy contains one of the icons of film history – the image of Harold Lloyd clinging desperately from the hand of a skyscraper clock. The film will be accompanied by old-fashioned piano music performed by international concert and silent film pianist, composer and arranger Costas Fotopoulos. Costas provides live improvisations to silent films across the globe. Take a trip back in time to appreciate this great comedy. Cash only bar open from 7pm.
